Are we on the bus the whole tour?

Absolutely not. The tour takes place on a coach bus since the locations are spread out all around Manhattan. The tour includes a mix of on-the-bus viewings of locations and stops to get off the bus to explore, all woven into the story of how they relate to the TV shows and movies that have portrayed them.

Should I tip the tour guide?

Gratuities are not included in the price of the tour ticket. A tip for exemplary service is always appreciated, but never required.

Is there ever a circumstance when a location is omitted from the tour?

While it is extremely rare, they do sometimes need to skip or modify certain locations that usually are part of the tour. It’s the Empire State Building! And this landmark is so popular, that by today it has been featured in more than 250 movies, including Sleepless in Seattle and An Affair to Remember . These and many more New Yorker movie locations are waiting for you!

A self-guided New York film locations walking tour (with map)

Posted on Last updated: December 20, 2022

Explore Manhattan through the locations of iconic movies and TV shows, from Ghostbusters to King Kong, on this self-guided New York film locations walking tour – map and directions included.

A self-guided New York film locations walking tour (with map)

It was my first trip to New York and everything should’ve felt new. But I couldn’t shake off the feeling that I’d been here before. Walking past Fifth Avenue’s skyscrapers as yellow cabs rushed by, it hit me. I might not have actually been to the Big Apple before, but I’d walked these streets and seen these views in so many movies it almost felt like I had.

Times Square’s neon lights, the view from the top of the Empire State Building, steam rising from subway vents – they were all part of the films I grew up with. Although I’ve been back to New York several times since, I still haven’t shaken off that feeling of excitement I get from seeing these places translated from the screen into real life.

Autumn in Central Park, New York

Whether you’re a rom-com or thriller fan, love black and white films or modern blockbusters, chances are New York will feature in your film history too. And Manhattan has such a high concentration of film locations that it makes for a great walking tour.

So grab your camera and some comfy shoes, and in just under seven miles (or five miles if you use the handy subway short cut) this self-guided New York film locations walking tour will take you in the footsteps of King Kong , Ghostbusters and many more.

A self-guided New York film locations walking tour

The New York Public Library, a New York film location

Start your New York film locations walking tour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 1000 Fifth Avenue. The nearest subway station is 86th Street, which is on the route of the 4, 5 and 6 trains. From the station it’s around a 10-minute walk to the museum.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (aka The Met) is one of the world’s largest art museums, and its main building stretches for a quarter of a mile along Fifth Avenue. There are over two million items in the Met’s collection across 5000 years of history, with everything from ancient Greek sculptures to artworks by Monet, Van Gogh and Picasso.

On screen, the Met is where Pierce Brosnan steals a Monet painting in the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. Well the exterior scenes are at least – the Met didn’t want to be associated with a robbery, even a fictional one, so didn’t allow filming inside.

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan take a wander around the Temple of Dendur in the Met’s Egyptian Room in When Harry Met Sally (1989). The temple also featured in Ocean’s 8 (2018), the third Ocean’s Eleven spin-off. The production team recreated the museum’s Met Gala – an annual celebrity-filled fundraiser – as the scene for a diamond heist.

New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art

From the Met, follow Fifth Avenue south along the edge of Central Park (1.2 miles) until you reach the end of the park where you’ll see the Plaza Hotel on your right.

The Plaza Hotel

The Plaza Hotel * opened in 1907 and gets its name from the Grand Army Plaza which it’s located on. It stretches over 21 floors and was built to look like a French Renaissance château. It’s one of the city’s most luxurious – and expensive – hotels, and a stay in its lavish Royal Plaza Suite will set you back an eye-watering $40,000 a night.

Over the years the Plaza has featured in plenty of films, including Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). Macaulay Culkin’s uses his dad’s credit card to stay there when he gets on the wrong plane and ends up in New York instead of Florida. It’s also been a location for North By Northwest , Crocodile Dundee , The Great Gatsby and Bride Wars .

The Plaza Hotel in New York

Leave the Plaza and carry on walking down Fifth Avenue for a few minutes and you’ll see Tiffany & Co’s flagship store on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street.

Tiffany’s

With its polished marble exterior and sparkling window displays, Tiffany’s is one of the world’s best-known jewellery stores (who hasn’t coveted one of their turquoise boxes?). It became part of movie history in 1961 when Audrey Hepburn stepped out of a cab and stood looking through the shop’s window in the opening scenes of Breakfast at Tiffany’s .

You can have breakfast at Tiffany’s yourself at the Blue Box Café (reopening in 2023 after refurbishment). It’s decorated in their signature turquoise colour and serves smoked salmon bagels and buttermilk waffles – though book well in advance.

Tiffany’s is also where Patrick Dempsey asks Reese Witherspoon to marry him in Sweet Home Alabama (2002), which prompted a flurry of proposals in the store ever since. And if you want a turquoise box for yourself and don’t quite have a diamond-sized budget, you can get a more budget-friendly silver Tiffany chain for around $95.

Breakfast at Tiffany's film location, New York

Keep walking south down Fifth Avenue until you get to 51st Street, then take a right turn and walk one block to 6th Avenue (0.5 miles) and the Radio City Music Hall.

Radio City Music Hall

The Art Deco Radio City Music Hall * is part of the Rockefeller Center. It was the largest indoor theater in the world when it was built in the 1930s and has had over 300 million visitors since then. The main stage is the length of a city block and the theatre’s Rockettes dance troupe have been high-kicking their way across it for the last 90 years.

As well as being a filming location for several game shows, Radio City appears in The Godfather (1972) – Michael Corleone and his wife are watching a show when they hear Don Corleone has been shot. It was also shown in 1982’s Annie and Home Alone 2 .

Next continue south down 6th Avenue, then turn right along 45th Street and walk for one block to 7th Avenue and Times Square (0.5 miles).

Times Square

Over 330,000 people normally pass through bustling Times Square each day, making it one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations. But in the Tom Cruise film Vanilla Sky (2001), Times Square is completely deserted after the production team got special permission to empty it of people and cars for three hours early one Sunday.

Will Smith also goes hunting in an abandoned Times Square in the post-apocalyptic I Am Legend (2007). It was destroyed by a giant wave in Deep Impact (1998). And is the site of a fight between Spiderman and Electra in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). Times Square also appeared in classic films Midnight Cowboy (1969) and Taxi Driver (1976).

Colourful lights in Times Square New York

Then head south down 7th Avenue. Turn left when you reach 43rd Street and follow it for three blocks to Park Avenue where you’ll find Grand Central Terminal (0.5 miles).

Grand Central Terminal

Grand Central Terminal was built in 1913 and is a US National Historic Landmark, as well as still being one of the city’s busiest transport hubs. The station exterior and Park Avenue Viaduct were the site of the Battle of New York in 2012’s The Avengers .

The main concourse was used for a flash mob scene at the end of the Justin Timberlake film Friends With Benefits (2011). Look up to see its beautifully detailed astronomical ceiling – though keen astronomers might notice the star map isn’t totally accurate.

Below the concourse is the Oyster Bar where George Clooney has lunch with his daughter in One Fine Day (1996). And Will Smith’s been to Grand Central twice – to film exterior shots for I Am Legend and discover aliens in the locker room in Men in Black (1997).

Inside Grand Central Station, New York

Outside the station, head west along 42nd Street for two blocks to the New York Public Library’s Schwarzman Building (0.3 miles).

New York Public Library

With its marble walls, grand staircases, chandeliers and ceiling fescoes, the New York Public Library is one of my favourite New York buildings. On screen it stood in for the foyer of The Met in The Thomas Crown Affair (1999). But it’s probably best known as the place where the Ghostbusters hunted down the ghost of librarian Eleanor Twitty (1984).

The library’s beautiful Rose Reading Room is two blocks longs long and 15 metres high, with a gilded ceiling painted with clouds. It appears in The Day After Tomorrow (2004), where survivors of the new Ice Age burn the library’s books to keep warm.

And Carrie Bradshaw chose the library as the venue for her wedding to Mr Big in Sex and the City: The Movie (2008) because it was “the classic New York landmark that housed all the great love stories” (though it didn’t quite work out for her).

The Rose Reading Room in the New York Public Library

Exit the library onto Fifth Avenue and walk south for seven blocks until you reach the Empire State Building (0.4 miles) at 20 West 34th Street.

Empire State Building

The 103-storey Art Deco Empire State Building * has to be one of New York’s most iconic buildings. And the first time many of us ever saw it was on screen with a giant gorilla swinging around the top of it in the original 1933 monster film King Kong .

Since then it’s been used in over 250 films and TV shows, including Superman II (1980), where Christopher Reeve’s Superman catches the tower’s antenna before it falls. And its interiors were used as Buddy’s father’s offices in the 2003 festive film Elf .

The Empire State Building was also used in romantic favourite An Affair to Remember (1957). Cary Grant asks Deborah Kay to meet him at the top of the Empire State Building, but she’s hit by a car on the way there and doesn’t make it.

An Affair to Remember is Meg Ryan’s character Annie’s favourite film in Sleepless in Seattle (1993). So the Empire State Building’s observation deck is where she finally meets up with Tom Hanks’ character Sam and his son at the end of the film.

The Empire State Building at night, a New York film location

The next hop is a bit bigger, so you can also catch the subway if you don’t want to walk (take lines B/D/F/M from 34th Street to 2nd Avenue). Otherwise head down Fifth Avenue then take Broadway south through Union Square before going left on East Houston Street to Katz’s Deli, on the southwest corner of Houston and Ludlow Streets (2.2 miles).

Katz’s Deli

Katz’s Deli on the Lower East Side was founded in 1888 and is known for its giant pastrami on rye sandwiches. It got its big screen break in When Harry Met Sally (1989), as the place where Meg Ryan faked an orgasm over lunch with Billy Crystal. You can sit in her spot under a sign saying “Where Harry met Sally… hope you have what she had!”

The deli also appears in fantasy film Enchanted (2007) and is where Johnny Depp’s character meets with an FBI contact in Donnie Brasco (1997).

Scene from Where Harry Met Sally at Katz's Deli, New York

Next head back along Houston Street as far as West Broadway and then follow that south until you reach 14 North Moore Street (1.4 miles).

FDNY Ladder 8

Finish your New York film locations walking tour at the New York City Fire Department’s Hook and Ladder 8 firehouse. It was built in 1903 and has been a working fire station for more than a century. But you might know it better as the base for the Ghostbusters as it featured in both the 1984 original film and the 2016 remake.

Well the outside of the building did at least – a lot of the interiors were actually shot in the studio in LA. But the Ghostbusters logo from the film hangs outside the station after a crowdfunding campaign raised money to build one. The station also appeared in the 2005 film Hitch and episodes of TV show Seinfeld and How I Met Your Mother .

From the station it’s a few minutes’ walk to Franklin Street or Canal Street subway stations. Or you’re surrounded by Tribeca’s bars and cafés if you fancy a post-tour drink.

NYC TV and Movie Tour – On Location

NYC TV and Movie Tour – On Location

Image of author Steffen

If you like movies or TV shows, then you already know that majority of the scenes take place in major cities such as New York City. If you’re in NYC, make sure to check out this really unique tour called the NYC TV and Movie Tour. They take you to some of the most popular spots shown in TV shows and movies such as Friends, Seinfeld, Hitch, Spider Man, I Am Legend and many more.

Table of Contents

Meeting Place

Ellen

The tour started at 10AM and we met up at Ellen’s Stardust Diner in Midtown Manhattan. There we met our tour guide and 15 other people taking the tour. We were all led to a tour bus to start the day.

Exploring NYC based on TV and Movie Locations

The NYC TV and Movie Tour is pretty straight forward. We took the bus to our first stop which was Washington Square Park. During the ride down, the tour guide would explain the sites we would see and then show us movie or tv clips in relation to the site. For example, for Washington Square Park, he showed a clip of I Am Legend because the main character’s house is in the area. Also, the popular Washington Square Arch is in the movie. Once we got to the area, we parked the bus and visited those same locations mentioned above. Here is a fun fact; it costs about $300 to just acquire a film permit. Usually there are colorful flyers posted on poles days before a shoot to notify the area that parking will be prohibited and that sidewalks need to be cleared out.

Friends – Arguably The Most Popular TV Show

The people that participated on the tour came from different parts of the world. We had tourists from Germany, France, Australia and New Zealand. Obviously, different countries have different cultures, but one thing we all had in common was that the TV Series, Friends, was and probably still is a show that we still watch. On this tour, we visited the apartment that the TV show would feature to set certain scenes in the show. Only the exterior of the apartment was filmed in New York. The interior was actually filmed in a studio over 3,000 miles away in Los Angeles. Check out the pictures above!

Other Sites and Locations

Other places we visited was a fire department featured in Hitch and Ghostbusters. We also saw the outside of the apartment where Will Smith’s character in Hitch lived. We also drove by a diner featured in Men in Black. For the movie and TV lovers, this is definitely a tour to take. It’s pretty cool to see locations that you see in movies. If you’d like to take the NYC TV and Movie Tour, please book it by using the button below.

15 Summer Theaters for That Nearby, Out-of-Town Experience

Easygoing days of drama and comedy are just a few hours away (or even closer) in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

  • Share full article

Eight vividly costumed performers form a kick line in a scene from the musical “La Cage Aux Folles.”

By Jesse Green

Summer used to be when playgoing in the city came to a full stop. With no air-conditioning, most shows closed, at least until fall.

But now that urban theater is a year-round sport, Memorial Day is more like a comma than a period. Notable productions play straight through the hot months — some even opening in August, even on Broadway.

So what has happened to the regional festivals, straw-hat theaters and avant-garde outposts that once flourished as the city languished? Many are struggling. Yet others are surging.

Regardless, they’re worth visiting.

There’s something different about summer theater outside the city. Subways are rarely involved, though a train ride or overnight stay at a lovely inn might be. Dress is casual — by which I mean “more casual than usual” because I’ve seen people at Shakespeare in the Park in pajamas. And the fare is more varied, including not just the prestige and tourist-bait extremes of the spectrum but also the hokey, offbeat and silly stuff in between.

Another plus: what you spend on that inn, you’ll save on the tickets.

So here’s a selection of theater that will help you get out of the city — or at least make you feel like you did.

The Big Magnets

Formerly the jewel of the summer theater circuit, famous for classics and knotty new works, the Williamstown Theater Festival , in Williamstown, Mass., is regrouping after its production model, dependent on unpaid labor, collapsed. This season includes just one home-grown, fully staged production: David Ives’s detective drama, “ Pamela Palmer ” (starting July 23). But much more is going on, including a multigenre, multistage event called “ WTF Is Next ” (Aug. 1-4). Think of it not as crisis management but as a tasting platter of ideas for the future.

A different formula — mixing popular musicals with thoughtful contemporary work — has helped Barrington Stage Company , just 20 miles down the road in Pittsfield, Mass., thrive where others have struggled. This season is no different, including the musicals “ La Cage Aux Folles ” (through Saturday) and “ Next to Normal ” (starting Aug. 13) but also the raucous comedy “ Boeing Boeing ” (starting July 17).

With programming that’s all over map — plays, musicals, concerts, standup — it makes sense that the Berkshire Theater Group is all over the map as well, with two theaters in Stockbridge, Mass., and one in nearby Pittsfield. For traditional theatergoers, this season’s best prospects include a pair of rare revivals, apt for a presidential election year: “ Abe Lincoln in Illinois ,” directed by the playwright David Auburn (through July 14) and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “ Pipe Dream ” (starting July 26).

Goodspeed Musicals has a split personality. At its main stage along the banks of the Connecticut River in East Haddam, Conn. — a 19th-century jewel called the Opera House — it produces revivals of much-loved war horses. At its modern Terris Theater, 10 minutes away in Chester, it fosters original works. “ South Pacific ,” directed by Chay Yew, looks to be the highlight in East Haddam (through Aug. 11); at the Terris, it might well be “ Ask for the Moon ,” a farcical new ocean-liner comedy from the director Darko Tresnjak (starting July 19).

Shakespeare, Approximately

Though Shakespeare & Company , in Lenox, Mass., produces all kinds of plays in its five performance spaces, why not experience its namesake author? This summer includes “Shake It Up,” a cabaret setting the poet’s verse to rock music (through Sunday), and a vaudeville-themed version of “The Comedy of Errors” (starting July 13). The vaudeville is in the company’s 540-seat amphitheater, so bring bug spray.

The same goes for performances under the big top at Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival , in Garrison, N.Y. In a season of reimaginings — a beautiful new hilltop tent theater is scheduled to open in 2026 — the festival this season (through Sept. 2) offers a “re-versed” “Medea,” an adaptation of Agatha Christie and “By the Queen,” Whitney White’s take on the Henriad tetralogy, as seen by the fascinatingly complex Queen Margaret.

Hats Not Required

The old straw-hat circuit — named for the informal headgear men wore in summer — brought stars to the sticks. That’s not so common these hatless days, but one of the oldest straw-hat theaters, Ogunquit Playhouse , in Ogunquit, Maine, will present some stars worth flipping a lid for: Kathleen Turner and Julia Murney in “A Little Night Music” (starting July 18).

The Cape Playhouse , in Dennis, Mass., has been a destination for theatergoers en route to Provincetown since 1927. If its flags, gingerbread and parklike setting make it seem like a set for “The Music Man,” that’s good advertising; it specializes in upbeat stagings of hit Broadway musicals, this summer including “Beautiful” (July 10-Aug. 3) and “Waitress” (Aug. 7-24).

With its weathered barn and woodsy Catskill setting, the Forestburgh Playhouse in Forestburgh, N.Y., feels like a throwback to the unpretentious days of let’s-put-on-a-show summer theater — and indeed, it’s the oldest continuously running professional playhouse in New York. But the rich combo of thoughtful dramas and lightweight musicals — including “The Prom” (July 16-28) and “Rock of Ages” (Aug. 13-25) — means that the fare, if familiar, isn’t musty.

Three musicals — “The Prom,” “Beautiful,” “Rock of Ages” — seem to dominate this straw-hat season. You could compare productions invidiously by adding the Sharon Playhouse , in Sharon, Conn., to your tour. It is staging two of them: “Rock of Ages” (through July 7) and an especially promising “Prom,” starring Kate Baldwin as a diva down on her luck (starting July 26). That musical is just six years old but already as classic as the playhouse’s big red barns.

Summer festivals that focus on nurturing new talent and new ideas feel especially at home on campuses. Nestled among the dorms of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Powerhouse Theater produces short runs of developmental work. Two that look to be highlights of the season are about queer life: the lesbian musical thriller “Absolute Zero” (July 12-14) and Drew Droege’s “Messy White Gays” (July 19-21).

Just five miles away, where Poughkeepsie meets the Hudson — make reservations for lunch at the Culinary Institute of America nearby — is New York Stage and Film , on the Marist College campus. This incubator’s runs are even shorter, usually just one performance each, but that’s part of the fun; some of what you catch on the fly will wind up Off Broadway in years to come. Among the options this season (July 16-Aug. 4) are Amber Ruffin’s musical “Bigfoot,” Kate Douglas’s “Tulipa” and Stacy Osei-Kuffour’s “Basement, IL.”

Farther upstate, in Annandale-on-Hudson, Bard Summerscape ’s annual festival of the arts, on the Bard College campus, typically programs at least one genre-bending theatrical novelty among its dance and classical music explorations. Last year, it was “Illinoise,” which soon made its way to Broadway; this year it’s Elevator Repair Service’s moving take on James Joyce’s “Ulysses” (through July 14).

Nothing from PS21 , the Center for Contemporary Performance in Chatham, N.Y., is likely to end up on Broadway. The company’s sweet spot is the international avant-garde, this summer including a “Hamlet” from Peru (July 19 and July 20). Amid the beauty of its 100-acre hilltop setting, once an apple orchard, PS21 makes its challenging work feel as welcoming as a new kind of nursery.

It’s not so much regional as hyperlocal, but Little Island , on a pier off West 13th Street in the meatpacking district of Manhattan, is a refuge anyway, surrounded by big sky and the Hudson. Typifying its adventurous mix of genres and styles this summer is Henry Hoke’s “Open Throat” (July 10-14), in which dance, music, puppets and human actors (including Chris Perfetti) tell the story of a queer mountain lion in Hollywood. Sometimes the way to get farthest from the city is by heading right to its heart.

'zombies 4' update: details from milo manheim, meg donnelly and more.

The film will premiere on Disney+ in 2025

OTRC logo

LOS ANGELES -- "ZOMBIES" fans, you have more undead fun to look forward to.

The cast recently returned from New Zealand, where they filmed "ZOMBIES 4: Dawn of the Vampires."

On The Red Carpet spoke with Milo Manheim, Meg Donnelly, Kylee Russell and Chandler Kinney as they touted "ZOMBIES: The Re-Animated Series" and they gave us a little movie update.

"We pick up at the end of their freshman year in college. So they're kind of taking on these... mentorship roles to these new kids," Kinney explained. "That's the way you've never really seen them before. So they get to lead and guide and, you know... support the kids as they go through their things, which we won't talk about, but lots of things to go through."

"Our new cast members are truly amazing. They're all stars. They're all incredible people inside and out, professional, incredibly talented, but also just like a great group of kids to be hanging out with and exploring a new city with," Manheim said. "I think just, as like parents, Meg and I are really excited to watch and see, you know, the world loved this movie and the world fall in love with these kids."

ZOMBIES fans know that music plays a big part in the franchise and this movie will be no different..

"The music sounds very new age and it sounds very, you know, rock at the same time as it being super nostalgic, not only with just like Disney nostalgia, but just like my own childhood nostalgia. It reminds me of a lot of the music I listened to as a kid. And, you know, it totally is reminiscent of the "Camp Rock," "High School Musical" days," Manheim said.

"The music is definitely my favorite music of all of the franchise. It's so incredible and it's so new. It's almost like kind of like old Disney where it's like pop rock kind of like that's kind of like the new kids, like their sound," Donnelly revealed.

Donnelly stopped short of revealing any other movie scoop.

"I literally just want to say everything because I'm so excited about it, but I cannot," she said.

Russell joined in, saying, "I'm not saying anything because knowing me, I will say something on accident and get in trouble," as she pretended to zip her lips.

Fans will have a little time to wait and speculate. "ZOMBIES 4: Dawn of the Vampires" heads to Disney+ next year.

In the meantime, fans can tune into "ZOMBIES: The Re-Animated Series," which is airing now on Disney Channel and streaming on Disney+.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Disney Channel, Disney+, and this ABC Station.

Breaking news, expert reveals the effect dakota johnson’s ‘unhinged’ press tour had on ‘madame web’s dismal box office.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Dakota Johnson’s new superhero movie “Madame Web” tanked at the box office last week and was overwhelmingly panned by critics.

In the film, the 34-year-old actress played the titular character of Cassandra Webb/Madame Web, a clairvoyant paramedic linked to the iconic superhero Spider-Man. “Madame Web” earned only $26.2 million over the six-day holiday weekend from its premiere on Valentine’s Day to Presidents Day , per Variety.

“Madame Web’s” debut marked the lowest opening for any film in the Sony Spider-Man universe and one of the worst starts for any movie based on a Marvel Comics character. The movie was met with an onslaught of negative reviews and currently holds an abysmal 13% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an underwhelming 55% audience score.

The film’s implosion comes after its star, Johnson, often appeared notably disinterested and dismissive of the movie and the superhero genre in general during a promotional tour that some social media users described as “unhinged.”

Fans of Johnson are familiar with the “Fifty Shades of Grey” star expressing her trademark candor and dry sense of humor during interviews, including her famously awkward exchange with Ellen DeGeneres on the host’s now-defunct talk show in 2019.

Since kicking off the press tour for “Madame Web,” Johnson has garnered attention for her blunt remarks about the film.

During an appearance on Magic FM earlier this week, Johnson revealed that she “hadn’t actually seen” “Madame Web.” The actress added that she tends to sneak out the backdoor at her movie premieres and “go to have dinner.”

“I probably won’t – I don’t know when I’ll see it,” Johnson said of “Madame Web.”

“Someday,” she added vaguely. Johnson went on to say that she rarely watches her own movies. “I don’t like to,” she said.

“For me, it’s a way to not have, like, an existential crisis,” Johnson continued. “Not watching my movies is like self-care.”

Meanwhile, in an MTV interview, host Josh Horowitz noted that there was a scene in the movie in which Johnson’s character dies for three minutes.

After Johnson appeared confused, Horowitz asked, “Do you remember that?”

“She does? I haven’t seen the movie,” Johnson said. “You could be right.”

During her press tour, Johnson also raised eyebrows with comments that she made about working with her younger co-stars.

In “Madame Web,” Johnson’s character Cassandra “Cassie” is a paramedic working in New York City alongside Benjamin “Ben” Parker, the uncle of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. After a near-death experience, Cassandra begins to develop clairvoyant abilities and becomes drawn to protect a trio of young women, Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced) and Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), who have been targeted by the antagonist Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim).

“I love them, and they annoy me, and I love them,” she joked to “Late Night” host Seth Myers last week.

She confirmed she meant she was annoyed on a “generational level,” telling Myers “all the time, every second of the day” after he asked when Sweeney, 26, O’Connor, 25, and Merced, 22, made her feel the oldest.

“I’m not that much older than them,” Dakota protested.

She also joked to E! News that the Gen Z co-stars have excluded her from a group text chat, which she quipped is “certainly” because she is a millennial.

“I’m older than them, and they make sure that I’m aware of that,” she told the outlet.

The three admitted to E! News they have a private chat group called “The Boo Crew,” which is a reference to their “Madame Web” characters, but it’s not a reflection on how they feel about Johnson, who they said gives them “big sister” vibes.

However, during a recent appearance on MTV UK, the three actresses joked about bonding over Johnson ignoring their text messages.

“Dakota definitely left me on read,” O’Connor said. “Dakota doesn’t reply to me,” Sweeney added. “Never!” O’Connor said with a laugh. “It’s been two years,” Merced chimed in.

“Been on read for two years,” O’Connor said while laughing. “We check occasionally,” Sweeney noted.

While some have argued that Johnson’s unconventional press tour hasn’t done “Madame Web” any favors, a number of fans have found the actress’ “unhinged” and “chaotic” antics entertaining and praised her deadpan humor and forthrightness.

“Reading all the Madame Web tweets and I kinda want to see it. I heart Dakota Johnson, her vibe is a little chaotic,” one fan wrote on X.

Never miss a story.

“every unhinged interview that Dakota Johnson gives makes me want to see Madame Web even more,” another social media user enthused.

Public relations expert Doug Eldridge of Achilles PR weighed in on whether Johnson’s press tour had ultimately contributed to the failure of “Madame Web.”

“The lack of critical and commercial success of this film does not fall squarely on Dakota’s shoulders,” Eldridge told Fox News Digital. “There is a recent string of superhero movies, which have fallen flat at the box office for reasons beyond mere PR missteps by their stars.”

He continued, “The Rock [actor Dwayne Johnson] is arguably the largest draw at the international box office, yet ‘Black Adam’ was dead on arrival. Similarly, in an ever-expanding superhero lexicon, ‘Captain Marvel,’ ‘Morbius,’ and ‘Blood Shot’ are just a few of the titles which never found their foothold, as the market for capes and tights is getting increasingly crowded and less appealing to the broader viewing audience.”

“That said, stars play a significant role in the media rollout of any film, but they are only one piece of the larger puzzle,” Eldridge added. “For instance, the studios have a marketing budget for each film; summer blockbusters or Pixar films are often paired with fast food brands, to drive awareness and demand for the ‘family ticket.'”

“Additionally, there is the distribution element, meaning how many theaters the movie will appear in across the United States. Finally, there is the media or press junket, which precedes the opening. After all of this, there is the fan reaction and ‘formal reviews’ from critics. Each is important in its own right and the last thing you want is your star stepping on the message. In sports, we’d call this an unforced error.”

Eldridge emphasized that press tours can have a significant impact on a movie’s success in some cases, citing the backlash that Rachel Zegler received after her criticisms of the source material behind her upcoming Disney film “Snow White.”

“Press tours are critical in Hollywood, as it not only drums up interest in various markets – both domestic and international – but it helps drive the initial wave of ticket purchases,” Eldrige said.

Rachel Zegler wearing black mesh top at Barker Hangar for the 2024 People's Choice Awards in Santa Monica, California.

He continued, “The impetus doesn’t just fall on the studios, but on the stars as well, especially given the new Hollywood model of back-end gross as a means of compensating stars, compared to the standard, upfront, $20M paycheck in the ‘90s and early ’00s. Two great examples of this are Tom Cruise and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Not only are they the two hardest working guys in Hollywood, but they’re also famous for their all-out approach to the press and publicity tour as their films open around the world. This is a big draw for fans and helps create the critical buzz for the initial stage of tickets buys.”

“For context on the importance of press tours and media junkets, look no further than the ‘failure to launch’ status surrounding the recent Snow White remake,” he added. “Rachel Zegler, who plays the titular role, had a series of off-putting comments regarding the iconic character and the need to not only remake the movie, but in so doing, rewrite the underlying premise, based on current social mores.”

“Her comments drew immediate and well-deserved blowback from fans and critics alike, which put Disney in the awkward position of having to delay production and purportedly reshoot much of the film altogether. While it’s up for debate whether the film would have been a success in its initial reboot, the PR torpedo unquestionably sunk the film in its current format.”

Tom Cruise jumps on a couch with Oprah Winfrey, wearing a black shirt and a woman in a pink dress on May 23, 2005 captured from a video.

“Madame Web’s” box office collapse has also apparently quashed Sony Pictures’ hopes for a Johnson-led franchise, though the actress told Total Film that she would “definitely” return for a sequel if asked.

“We’re not going to see another ‘Madame Web’ movie for another decade-plus,” one industry insider told The Hollywood Reporter. “It failed. Sony tried to make a movie that was a different type of superhero movie.”

Eric Schiffer, chairman of Reputation Management Consultants, told Fox News Digital, “Madame Web’s premiere spanned multiple days with early abysmal reviews. A positive press tour can’t save a disaster of a movie. If you watch most Dakota Johnson interviews, she’s deadpan, straight to the point. Her demeanor and personality did not cause ‘Madame Web’’s epic flop opening weekend and ratings.”

Schiffer noted, “Sony is hellbent on making their cinematic Marvel universe come to life but continues to fail enormously with its other characters like Morbius and Venom, which have been total flops. Critics and Marvel fans were not expecting anything different with ‘Madame Web.’”

“‘Madame Web’ is set to be the worst movie of 2024, but many people think it’s one of the worst movies of all time. At the end of the day, ‘Madame Web’ failed because it sucks,” he added.

Fox News Digital’s Brie Stimson contributed to this report.

'Musicals! Summer World Tour' film series opens Saturday at the Wexner Center

new york movie tour

Imagine paying $50 or less for a monthlong trek around the world, with stops in places like France, Japan, Egypt and India.

Sounds too good to be true, you say? The Wexner Center for the Arts says otherwise.

Chris Stults, curator of film and video at the Wex, guarantees you'll see iconic landmarks, visit eateries and watering holes known only to the locals and have memorable encounters on this globe-trotting adventure. All for $50. Or you can choose a single destination for $8. (No, that's not a typo.)

More movies: Drexel Theatre to present 'Voices: A Century of Political Cinema' monthly film series

One caveat: You won't actually be leaving Columbus. You'll be traveling to the Wex to hop aboard "Musicals! Summer World Tour" and experience a rainbow of world cultures through 12 films from Berlin to Bollywood , opening July 6 and running through Aug. 15.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"The series is a nice mix of established classics like 'The Umbrellas of Cherborg' from France or 'Black Orpheus' from Brazil, along with more cult favorite recent films like 'Om Shanti Om' from India or 'Neptune Frost' from Rwanda," Stults said.

The lineup for 'Musicals! Summer World Tour'

All films will be shown at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted, including:

  • Saturday, July 6 : "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" (France)
  • July 11 : "Siméon" (Martinique)
  • July 13 : "Black Orpheus" (Brazil)
  • July 18 : "Om Shanti Om" (India)
  • July 19 : Double feature — "Fangs" (Egypt), 7 p.m. and "Wild Zero" (Japan), 9 p.m.
  • July 20 : "A Woman is a Woman" (France)
  • July 25 : "Destiny" (Egypt)
  • Aug. 1 : "The Ship of Monsters" (Mexico)
  • Aug. 8 : "City of Lost Souls" (Germany)
  • Aug. 9 : "Latcho Drom" (France)
  • Aug. 15 : "Neptune Frost" (Rwanda)

The July 19 double feature is free, but tickets are still required. Single tickets for all other films are $10 general admission, $8 for Wex members and ages 55 and older and $5 for students.

All-access series passes cost $50 general admission, $40 for Wex members and ages 55 and older and $30 for students. A series pass comes with a passport to track your journey and earn prizes from the Wex and Seventh Son Brewing Co.

Tickets and passes can be purchased at wexarts.org/explore/musicals-summer-world-tour .

The series from conception to inception

Stults had been tossing the series idea around for years, keeping a lengthy list of potential titles, tracking them down and watching a wide range of films to narrow down his list.

"Programming the series, it felt important to not only have every film be great and notable but also have each film add something unique to the whole series," he said.

“The hope is that, if people come to multiple films, they’ll discover a wide range of cinematic traditions and possibilities of the musical form.

"It felt important also not just to feature a wide range of film styles from low-budget sci-fi to ornate historical epics, but also musical styles. So, there are films with very regional national genres of music such as zouk music from Martinique or bossa nova from Brazil, as well as more recognizable global sounds like rock or disco."

From book to film: 'Hunger Games,' 'Little Women' among upcoming screenings at Gateway

The words “movie musical” often conjure classics like “Singin’ in the Rain” and “ The Sound of Music ” or perhaps “ Grease ” or “Chicago,” but unlike those titles, the films in “Musicals! Summer World Tour” are not familiar to most people, which enthuses Stults.

“The most exciting films for me are the ones that will be discoveries for most people. That sense of discovery is what travel or a world tour — via movies — should be about!” he said.

“So, films that have been out of circulation for years like ‘Latcho Drom,’ which was an arthouse hit in the 1990s but isn’t streaming and hasn’t been on home video since its VHS release, are a joy to bring back.”

Why exactly did Stults select films that are far off the beaten path? Why aren’t there any classic American musicals, any Hollywood hits?

“Local independent theaters like the Ohio Theatre, Gateway, Drexel or Studio 35/Grandview — or channels like TCM — do a great job of keeping the standards in play, so that feels well covered unless you come up with a series that has a new take.

“So, this seemed like a way to bring the world to Columbus,” he said.

OSU medicine grad shoots movie: Columbus short film highlights diversity and complexities of medical school

Stults said he is also eager for viewers to see films that haven’t been shown widely in the U.S., like the magical-realist “Siméon,” which he described as “full of color, life, joy, magic and music,” and “a sure crowd-pleaser for all ages.”

Stults’ list of musicals he’s excited to introduce attendees to also includes “Ship of Monsters,” which he synopsized as “a Mexican sci-fi that has singing cowboys, robots and rubber-suit monsters and constantly delights.”

“City of Lost Souls” also earned a mention. “(It) now is much more visibly a pioneering queer and trans film that plays like a John Waters musical filmed in a grimy 1980s Berlin,” Stults said.

“Audiences will come out of those screenings wondering how these films aren’t better known!”

Julia Roberts was allegedly gushing over Travis Kelce’s relationship with Taylor Swift during the now-viral “handsy” video from the singer’s Dublin stop on the Eras Tour over the weekend.

“Squid Game: The Challenge” alum Jackie Gonzalez, who is deaf, deciphered the intimate conversation between the “Pretty Woman” actress and Kansas City Chiefs star, which showed Roberts scratching his chest and rubbing his shoulders.

“I’m so unusually happy for you guys, and I don’t mean to make you nervous, but it makes me so happy,” Roberts allegedly said, according to Gonzalez, who posted a video of the encounter on Instagram Tuesday.

Julia Roberts and Travis Kelce

The video of the Oscar winner, 56, and Kelce, 34, in the VIP tent of Aviva Stadium in Ireland went viral as Swifties slammed Roberts for getting touchy-feely .

“Why is she scratching his chest and pushing herself into him?? he is so uncomfortable trying to push her off and she holds him up. this is uber strange,” one person wrote on X.

The clip even caught the attention of comedian Nikki Glaser’s parents as they slammed the interaction as “gross” before later apologizing .

Meanwhile, supporters assumed it was a mutual interaction as Kelce was also rubbing Roberts’ arm.

“Please. Travis is not uncomfortable. Julia is clearly gushing over TNT [Taylor and Travis]. She has a great sense of humor so she’s probably joking around with him,” another fan chimed in.

Despite fan assumptions, Kelce seemingly enjoyed his chat with Roberts as he gushed over meeting the “awesome” actress during his “New Heights” podcast Wednesday.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce

“I met Julia Roberts in Ireland, in Dublin,” he said. “That was pretty cool.”

The tight end might still be in Europe with Swift, 34, as she prepares to hit the stage in Amsterdam. He doesn’t have to return to the US until Chiefs training camp begins on July 21.

Kelce — who recently made his on-stage debut at the Grammy winner’s tour stop in London last month — also teased more cameo appearances .
