Charley hoffman plays way into 2024 genesis invitational after tiger woods denied his sponsor invite request, share this article.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Charley Hoffman lost in a playoff on Sunday at the WM Phoenix but he did earn a consolation prize.
Hoffman’s second-place finish, his 10th runner-up in 495 PGA Tour starts, earned him 300 FedEx Cup points and a total of 315.65 in the Aon Swing 5, good for fourth place. The top five players not otherwise exempt who earned the most FedEx Cup points from the Sony Open in Hawaii through the WM Phoenix Open qualify for this week’s Genesis Invitational via the Aon Swing 5.
When Hoffman was informed by a Tour media official at the end of his post-playoff press conference, he said, “Did it? That’s awesome. I’m excited about that. I guess I’m playing next week and not going skiing.”
Hoffman, who is playing this season on a one-time exemption for being top 50 on the Tour’s career money list, said he was planning a family ski trip for a few days to Mammoth Mountain in California.
“I guess we’re going to have to change those plans,” said Hoffman. He noted that he asked Tiger Woods, who he served alongside on the PGA Tour policy board as a player director, for a sponsor’s invite to the Genesis Invitational. Tiger’s foundation runs the event and is the chief beneficiary. Tiger gave one of the four exemptions to himself. “He said, ‘They’re all taken,’ so I said, ‘I’ll play my way in,’ so I guess I did,” Hoffman said.
Hard to top showing up at Tiger’s tourney at Riviera having done just that, but Hoffman made it clear that he feels there is more left in the tank at age 47 and in his 19 th season on Tour.
“I want to kick all these young guys’ butts, believe me,” he said. “I sit back and I want to beat them. I want to be in these Signature Events. I want to be one of the best in the world again. If I’m healthy I can compete, and I want to show these guys I’ve still got it.”
Here’s a look at the Aon Swing 5 standings.

Celebrating 500 Starts: Charley Hoffman’s Remarkable Journey on the PGA Tour
Charley Hoffman, the San Diego native, is about to reach a major milestone in his esteemed career as a professional golfer. With less than three years until he turns 50, Hoffman is not only eligible to compete on the PGA Tour, but also on the PGA Tour Champions. However, before he embarks on this new chapter, he is celebrating another significant accomplishment – his 500th start on the PGA Tour at the Texas Valero Open.
Hoffman’s journey as a professional golfer began after his collegiate days at UNLV. In 2006, he made his much-anticipated debut on the PGA Tour, setting the stage for a career filled with remarkable moments and victories. Just a year later, Hoffman secured his first of four Tour wins at the prestigious Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.
Throughout the decades, Hoffman has gained wisdom, but has managed to maintain a carefree attitude amidst the intense competition. Reflecting on his early years as a PGA Tour player, he humorously recalls being “dumb enough” to believe he could compete with the best in the world. Even at the recent WM Phoenix Open, he still possesses the same tenacity, believing that he can challenge the younger generation of golfers. There’s a certain level of consistent determination and perhaps a touch of youthful folly that continues to drive him forward.

For Hoffman, the thrill of competition and the opportunity to learn from others have always been driving forces. In his youth, he found himself seeking wisdom from older players on the first tee. Now, as a seasoned veteran, he enjoys playing practice rounds with younger, up-and-coming golfers, drawing inspiration from their energy, charisma, and playing style.
Although Hoffman arrives in San Antonio after a string of missed cuts, including the Mexico Open, Players Championship, and Valspar Championship, his enthusiasm for the game remains unwavering. A recent close call at the WM Phoenix Open, where he narrowly lost in a playoff to Nick Taylor, has fueled his determination further. Hoffman’s unwavering work ethic is a testament to his commitment to the sport.
As he approaches his 500th start, Hoffman reflects on the significance of this milestone. It was during the WM Phoenix Open that he first became aware of the impending achievement. With strategic foresight, he decided to celebrate this remarkable feat in Texas. The location holds special meaning for him and his family, as they had previously spent many memorable spring breaks there. To have his 500th start in a place that holds such sentimental value is both humbling and awe-inspiring for Hoffman.
Looking toward the future, Hoffman contemplates the rarity of reaching 500 starts in the modern era of professional golf. With players opting to compete less frequently and discussions of a potentially shorter season, he believes that this achievement will become increasingly challenging for younger players. The unicorn-like status of reaching 500 starts will make it an even greater accomplishment in the coming years.
Nonetheless, Hoffman’s hunger for success remains insatiable. With his eyes set on surpassing 500 starts, he aspires to reach the illustrious milestone of 600 starts. It is a testament to his unwavering passion for the game, his unwavering drive, and his unwavering belief in his abilities.
Time and again, Hoffman has demonstrated his affinity for the state of Texas. Throughout his career, he has consistently performed well on Texan golf courses, including La Cantera and TPC San Antonio. Texas holds a special allure for him due to the challenging nature of its courses and the unpredictable winds – a combination that suits his ball-striking game. The demand these courses place on precision and strategy aligns perfectly with Hoffman’s style, making them a true playground for him.
As Charley Hoffman embarks on his 500th start, he stands on the cusp of history. His journey, filled with years of dedication, hard-fought victories, and memorable performances, is a testament to his love for the game and his unwavering commitment. In an era where longevity in professional golf is becoming increasingly rare, Hoffman’s achievement will undoubtedly continue to inspire and captivate the golfing community.

Charley Hoffman: ‘Not one person at a country club would have took another penalty’
- Follow on Twitter

Charley Hoffman , one day after blasting the PGA Tour, its rules officials and the USGA from either his cellphone or a computer, doubled down in the flesh on Saturday.
“What I meant and what I said, I mean, I think I explained it fairly well,” he said.
Frustrated by an incident during Friday’s second round of the WM Phoenix Open where he misinterpreted the rules and was forced to take two penalty strokes after a drive into the water on the 13th hole at TPC Scottsdale, Hoffman unloaded on social media. Among his 280 words on Instagram, he wrote: “It’s still mind blowing that a group of amateurs rule the professional game of golf. I also blame the @pgatour rules officials for putting out a terrible penalty area line where this could even happen. No accountability at any level here. No protection for the players at all. You wonder why guys are wanting to jump ship and go play on another tour. Players need transparency, protection and consistency.”
After his third round on Saturday, Hoffman was asked by a reporter what he “really meant.”
“Obviously not a huge fan of the USGA and how they govern us all the time,” Hoffman said. “I was under the impression that the rule had changed. And I was frustrated when the rule hadn’t changed, why it hadn’t changed, and I think there’s some sort of — I mean obviously we have a PGA Tour liaison that helps with the USGA and helps in figuring out what the rules should and shouldn’t be. …
“But as — and as I told the rules officials last night, it’s like, everybody says, we’re going to change it for the better, we’re going to do this and that, we’re close or whatever, but nothing seems to get done.”
Included in Hoffman’s post were two references to proposed golf leagues that would rival the PGA Tour, and that incidents like Friday’s would be reason to “jump ship.” One of those tours, a league that is backed by the Saudi Arabia-based LIV Golf Investments group , has reportedly offered Tour players millions of dollars to join, and those reports appear to have reached the ears of Hoffman, who is also one of four player directors on the PGA Tour’s Player Advisory Council.
PGA Tour rules official defends Charley Hoffman ruling
Would a player leave the Tour because of a rules concern? In Hoffman’s incident, his ire stemmed from what followed after he placed his ball after two attempts at a penalty drop — as he walked away, his in-play ball rolled into the water, and he was stung.
“I think it’s a whole, a whole — everything,” Hoffman said. “You got to look at yourself as a policy board member and look at yourself in the face — as I said, what can I do better as a player director, what can the executive committee do, executive directors do better to make sure that we are the best tour in the world. …
“I had no — I wasn’t near the golf ball, I had no intent to hit at the golf ball, and the ball moved after I dropped it twice, and I have to put it down where the ball landed. I have no control over that, I turn my back, and the ball goes in the water. How is that a rule that is good for the game of golf and how we play? I mean, not one person at a country club would have took another penalty for that. Why is it, in professional golf, are we doing that? It’s not the first time it’s happened.
“So you have to use what I have because obviously what we, what the players have said and our person that sits on their board and sits with them, it hasn’t gotten through to them.
Accountability? ‘Where is his?’ Brandel Chamblee scorches Charley Hoffman
“And I talked to the USGA last night and hopefully they got the point and hopefully it does change. So hopefully a little bit of hard times for me going through this, probably going to catch a ton of crap, will make the game better, and hopefully the PGA Tour and the policy board and everybody gets together and we keep everybody here and we play in the U.S. the best game of golf in the world and we have the best players play week-in and week-out here in the United States.”
When asked if he knew he made “a pretty big leap” from a rules infraction to players potentially leaving the PGA Tour, Hoffman said it was “strategically.” He and reporters then had the following exchange:
“I, if I just griped about a rule no one probably catches it. No one says anything,” he said.
“How much thought did you put in …” a reporter asked.
“A decent amount,” Hoffman said. “So I put a jab in there on purpose just so that the media would catch it.”

UNLV alum shows he’s ‘still got it’ with strong showing in Phoenix
UNLV alum Charley Hoffman showed he can still compete on the PGA Tour when healthy after a strong performance at the Phoenix Open.
There were plenty of fascinating storylines from the PGA Tour’s now concluded West Coast Swing, but none was as popular with players and fans alike than the resurgence of veteran Charley Hoffman.
Hoffman’s playoff loss at the Phoenix Open showed the UNLV alum remains capable of quality golf at age 47. That hadn’t been evident in recent years when back issues kept him from being competitive over the grind of an entire PGA Tour event.
“It was a long road,” Hoffman said of feeling healthy again, which happened near the end of 2023. “My back has been bad and just (required) a lot of maintenance, and it’s been nice to be able to show up every week and be able to practice and play and not just hopefully get a start and get in the round.”
His recent struggles forced Hoffman to use a one-time exemption for career money earnings to play this season. But the result in Phoenix has already given him a huge jump on retaining his playing status for 2025.
Hoffman just needs to continue to play well. He believes he will.
“I can’t compete against these guys with a sore back, but if I’m healthy, I’ve still got it,” said Hoffman, a member of UNLV’s 1998 national championship team.
The four-time winner still has the competitive juices flowing after more than two decades on the PGA Tour.
“I want to kick all these young guys’ butts, believe me,” Hoffman said. “I sit back and I want to beat them. I want to be in these signature events. I want to be one of the best in the world again. If I’m healthy I can compete, I want to show these guys I’ve still got it.”
Hoffman certainly had it in Phoenix. It gave him a glimpse of what he hopes is in store for the rest of the year.
“I love the juices. I love competing,” Hoffman said. “This builds a little fire in the belly.”
Rebel earns honors
UNLV junior Toa Yokoyama was named last week’s Mountain West Women’s Golfer of the Week for the first time in her collegiate career.
Yokoyama finished third at the San Diego State Classic thanks to a 5-under 67 in the final round Feb. 13. It was her second consecutive top-10 finish for the Rebels.
The finish also moved Yokoyama up to No. 8 in Spikemark’s national individual rankings.
Junior clinics on tap

U.S. Women’s Open qualifiers
Nevada is being bypassed by the United States Golf Association as a local qualifying spot for this year’s U.S. Women’s Open. The organization has announced 26 locations for local qualifying for this year’s championship. The closest qualifiers to Las Vegas are Soboba Springs in San Jacinto, California, on April 23 and Pinnacle Peak in Scottsdale, Arizona, on May 6.
The U.S. Women’s Open will be played May 30-June 2 at Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

It’s certainly not the worst week on the FedEx Cup Fall with some of the best golfers in the world fighting for priority ranking and access to the 2025 signature events as they compete at this week’s World Wide Technology Championship in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. If you’re teeing off with money on the line, it might as well be at the Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal at Diamante.
Erik van Rooyen will return to defend an emotional victory as the South African pro became the tournament’s first back-to-back winner since Viktor Hovland in 2020-’21. He also dedicated his triumph to a former college teammate, Jon Trasamar , who was in his last days fighting a battle with cancer. He’s currently No. 67 in the FedEx Cup standings, so a strong finish here will definitely help get him into hotly contested PGA Tour events coming up.
Cameron Young is back on the course this week for the first time since the BMW Championship in August. He’s missed just one cut over the last 11 months. Other notable players include Nico Echavarria, coming off a Zozo Championship victory, Camilo Villegas and Joel Dahmen. Local golfers looking to win in their home country include Isidro Benitez, Santiago de la Fuente, Emilio Gonzalez and Omar Morales.

Horses for Courses: Erik van Rooyen hopes for more par-breaking form at El Cardonal at Diamante

Located on Mexico's Pacific Coast, Los Cabos welcomes the World Wide Technology Championship at El Cardonal at Diamante for the second time. Although not installed as the betting favorite this week at the BetMGM Sportsbook, reigning champion Erik van Rooyen (+3300) is the only player to lift the trophy on the Baja Peninsula. Posting 27-under on the par-72 layout last year, the South African eagled the final hole to win by two shots.
Players listed are in the field this week; 2024 season stats.
Designed by Tiger Woods and TGR Design and opened in 2014, El Cardonal at Diamante ranked as one of the easiest courses on TOUR in 2023. The resort course produced a scoring average of 68.993, more than three shots under par. No course conceded more birdies (2,094) or eagles (61) last year. Van Rooyen circled 27 birdies (T8) and added three eagles to offset four bogeys and a double. Seven players produced more birdies than the winner, but nobody made more eagles. With four par-5 holes on the card, the field averaged 16 par breakers for the week, and the top nine players posted 20-under or better.
SG: Approach the Green
Blanketed by Paspalum grass, the preferred grass of most seaside courses in the Caribbean and Mexico, El Cardonal at Diamante stretches 7,452 yards. With landing areas in the fairways pushing 60 yards wide, just one water penalty area and no rough framing of the short grass, everyone will have a chance to attack the hole locations. The greens, averaging 8,300 square feet, are massive targets, and those who can control the spin and trajectory will have the best chances to hole birdie putts. ( Note: ShotLink is not in use for this event).
Last year Justin Suh (+6600) hit 51 of 56 fairways (T38) but led the field in both Greens in Regulation (67 of 72) and Birdies (31). Averaging almost eight birdies a round, he cashed solo fourth, his best finish on TOUR to date, and did not produce a round higher than 68.
Birdie or Better Percentage
Contending in a shootout requires converting Greens in Regulation to birdies or better. Last year, all the players in the top nine posted 20-under or lower. The resort course conceded 10-under-par or better to 68 of the 73 players who advanced to the weekend. Those 73 players produced nine rounds ABOVE par for the entire week.
A former winner on Paspalum in Mexico at Mayakoba, Matt Kuchar (+2800) looked like he was going to run away and hide from the field last season. Leading by six shots through 14 holes in Round 3, the 44-year-old made a quadruple bogey and bogey on his next two holes to let the rest of the field back in the tournament. The nine-time winner posted all four rounds at 67 or better and ranked second in Birdie or Better Percentage. Joining him in second place for the week was another veteran, Camilo Villegas (+30000) , who tied van Rooyen for third in converting GIR to birdies.
Oddsmaker’s extras
Nate Lashley (+5000): Top finishes on Paspalum included a victory and T4 at Corales Puntacana Championship, three top-10 paydays at the Puerto Rico Open, T11 at Vidanta Vallarta, and T10 here last year.
Nico Echavarria (+5500): The winner at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP two weeks ago won for the first time on the PGA TOUR in March 2023 at the Puerto Rico Open. The two-time winner on TOUR loves the seaside surface and cashed checks of T15 or better at Corales and Puerto Rico earlier this season.
Chad Ramey (+6600) and Joel Dahmen (+10000) have both won the Corales Puntacana Championship in the last five years on a similar design … Harris English (+2800) and Patton Kizzire (+6600) are former event champions at Mayakoba on Paspalum … Brandon Wu (+20000) has cashed T13, third and T2 in three trips to Puerto Vallarta and was twice in the top 10 in Puerto Rico. Hey, everyone needs a long shot!
