Fit for the gods

From the coasts of the Mediterranean to the top of Mount Olympus, Greece is a place grand enough for mythical gods and friendly enough for travelers alike. Uncover its ancient ruins and relics and take in an iconic landscape of whitewashed homes. This is only the beginning of the endless wonders you’ll find when you first set foot on Greek soil.

Destination Must-See's

Greece ms1

This is the most spectacular destination in the Mediterranean and holds the most prehistoric settlement in the region. The ancient town of Akrotiri was once destroyed and consequently preserved by a volcanic eruption around 1450 B.C. The excavation site of this city is known as the “Minoan Pompeii.” But perhaps the island’s greatest draws are its vineyards, whitewashed chapels, volcanic cliffs, and famous wines of Santorini.

Greece ms2

Known as the “whitewashed jewel of the Cyclades islands” or the “Island of the Winds,” it is said that the island was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. It also gets its name from the grandson of Apollo - “Mykonos.” In the island’s capital town you will find the church, town hall, castle, the Archaeological, Folklore, and Maritime Museums, and a shopper’s paradise – Matoyianni Street.

Greece ms3

Athens is the capital city of Greece and the historical capital of Europe. It is home to many celebrated ancient monuments including the imposing Acropolis, the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Royal Palace, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Olympic Stadium, and Hadrian’s Gate – the symbolic entrance to the city. It also has the charming Plaka neighborhood which has been without interruption since antiquity.

Greece ms4

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B.C. You can walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium, witness amazing sculptures at the museum, or even attend one of the many festivals held throughout the year.

Destination Must-Do's

Greece md1

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Greece md2

Delphi ruins:

Delphi was regarded as the center of the world and had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. The site includes two sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo and Athena, and other buildings that were mostly intended for sports. The earliest finds in Delphi date back to 4000 B.C. from the Korykeion Andron, a cave where the first rituals took place. The ruins are filled with an enormous amount of history and beauty.

Greece md3

Greek Olive Farm:

Olives and olive oil are staples of the Mediterranean diet, and Greece is a major grower and producer of olive products. A visit to a Greek olive farm can provide a taste of Greek culture and serve as a window into everyday life in the country. Tours, tastings, meals, and cooking classes hosted at olive farms are all wonderful options on the table when venturing into Greece’s countryside.

Greece md4

Travel back in time with a visit to Athens’s old city – the Plaka. The hilly cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings housing small shops, sidewalk cafes and family-owned restaurants making this neighborhood Athens’ crowned jewel. The neighborhood comes alive at night. The alleyways fill with music and dancing and locals and visitors alike dine on their favorite traditional dishes.

Expert Advice

diana

Getting around is easier than you would expect. Greeks can speak English enough to assist travelers, and street signs are in both Greek and English.

Greece e2

Much of your trip may focus on the ancient past yet I suggest you also take time to explore the vibrant traditions that still live in today’s Greek culture.

Greece e3

Greece is a welcoming destination year-round. Consider visiting October through May to beat the summer bustle, and with Greece’s 250+ days of sunshine in an average year, don’t forget your sunglasses.

Best time to visit.

Greece generally has a mild, Mediterranean climate, with July and August being the busiest months for tourism. With warm weather and plentiful sunshine, this is a great time for visiting the islands, swimming in the sea and lazing on the beach. Summers are generally hot and dry, with daytime temperatures rising to 85°-100°F ( 30°-38°C ).

By mid-September, temperatures begin to fall and crowds thin, but it can still be hot. The weather remains generally calm and balmy well into October. If you can't get to Greece in the spring, and beaches are not your primary goal, this is a fine time to visit. By late October, ferry service and flights are cutting back and most facilities on the islands begin to close for the winter. But the cooler atmosphere makes   Athens   and the mainland all the more pleasant.

Culture and customs

Greece’s culture is very much influenced by its ancient past. The hallmarks of Western medicine, philosophy, drama, and government can all be attributed to the mighty ancient Greek civilization – which is an incredible source of national pride. Traditional music and dance are still valued and used to commemorate celebrations throughout the year. The circle dance, for instance, dates to the Byzantine period. Even contemporary cuisine has its roots in ancient tradition.

Greeks place a high amount of value on ‘kefi’, which loosely translates to joy or passion. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. For this reason, meals are leisurely and social gatherings are frequent, typically involving drinking, dancing and lively discussion. Common Greek customs, like smashing plates and dancing with a glass of water on your head, are considered expressions of kefi.

With more than 90% of the population being Greek Orthodox, religion plays an important part in everyday life. Religious festivals and ceremonies are commonplace, both in the mainland cities and small rural villages. Christmas and Easter are particularly important dates on the calendar, although religious celebrations are not limited to these times as there are daily, weekly and annual rites and rituals performed all throughout Greece’s mainland and islands.

Food and drink

Greek cuisine favors simplicity and relies primarily on fresh local produce. Think vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains; grilled meats and fresh fish; parsley, garlic, dill, and mint; and punchy cheeses such as feta, kefalotyri, and halloumi. Drinks-wise, locals will savor a Greek coffee at a kafeneio (coffeehouse) or glass of anise-flavored ouzo (diluted with water) at an ouzeri – along with a couple of mezedhes (appetizers) – for hours. There’s also tsipouru (fermented distilled grape skins), raki (a tsipouru from Crete), and retsina (white wine flavored with pine resin).

Geography and environment

Sharing land borders with Albania , Bulgaria , Turkey, and Macedonia , Greece is located in Southern Europe and is surrounded by the Ionian, Mediterranean, and Aegean Seas. Consisting of the mainland peninsula and an archipelago of more than 3000 islands, Greece is typically mountainous, containing peaks, karsts, and canyons all over. Despite the mountainous topography, there is much arable land in Greece with small-scale farms successfully producing olives, peaches, melons, grapes, tomatoes, and grain for export and local use.

Greece’s highest peak, Mount Olympus, is famed for being the dwelling place of the 12 ancient gods in Greek mythology. The islands are mostly uninhabited and are formed in small chains (called archipelagos) within the Aegean Sea. Santorini , Mykonos, and Corfu are among the more popular islands with tourists, though Crete and Evia are the largest islands.

History and government

Early history.

The early history of Greece is among the world’s most fascinating, and like the other ancient civilizations of Egypt and Rome, Greece has many monuments still standing after centuries. The Greeks have been both the conquerors and the conquered, withstood the Plague and other natural disasters, and birthed some of the greatest literature, scientific developments, mathematical formulas, and thought movements.

Recent history

In 1821, the Greeks fought against Ottoman rule during the Greek War of Independence, which resulted in Greece being recognized as an autonomous region in 1828. This was a time of great upheaval for the Greek people, with political assassinations, battles, and plundering. After autonomy was granted, many years of change followed, with continued war and confrontation alongside intermittent periods of relative peace. The two World Wars had a profound effect on Greece, with many battles fought in Greece during the early 1940s (during the Axis occupation). Athens was liberated from this occupation in 1944 and the Greek government was restored. Greece joined the United Nations (as a founding member) in 1945 and NATO in 1952. During this time, many Greeks started moving to other parts of the world in a mass wave of widespread migration. The USA , Australia, and Europe were popular destinations in this move, which saw hundreds of thousands of Greeks immigrate to other lands. In 2004, Athens successfully hosted the Summer Olympics once again. Yet more recently, Greece has come under the shadow of the European debt crisis which has crippled the economy. Despite this, the spirit of the Greek people endures as it has for eons.

10. Sail around Greece

You know those moments in life when you wonder, is this even real? On a sailing trip in Greece’s Cyclades Islands, that happens a lot. Learn more about our sailing tour in Greece .

From public markets and designer boutiques to European chain stores, Greece has every aspect of retail cornered.

If you are in the market for traditional Greek handicrafts, consider supporting the local economy by purchasing goods in the region that produces them. This includes silver from Ioannina; ceramics from Sifnos and Skopelos; and embroidery and lace from Crete, the Ionian Islands, Rhodes, and Skiros.

Shopping hours vary throughout Greece. Stores in large cities and tourist areas are typically open from 9 am to 9 pm, while shops in other areas close around 2 or 3 pm and reopen between 6 and 9 pm three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday). Most stores are closed on Sundays.

Things to buy in Greece

1. Komboloi (Worry Beads)

These stress-relieving resin beads are meant to be turned through your fingers as you muse over life. With roots deep in ancient Greek cultural tradition, they make a great souvenir for friends wanting a slice of authentic Greece.

2. Botanical Skincare

Greece is home to many brands of premium, organic skincare. Stock up on luxurious olive oil soap or enriching yogurt-based moisturizers before you head home.

Travel safely and ward off evil by attaching a Mati (an ‘Evil Eye’) to your backpack. They’re cheap, available almost everywhere in Greece, and are a great reminder of your travels in the Aegean.

Whether you prefer gold, silver, amber resin or colorful beads, Greece has a huge variety of jewelry on offer. Prices are typically lower than in many other parts of the world, so it’s likely you’ll be able to snap up a few bargains.

Festivals and events

The Greeks have been partying since the dawn of Western civilization. Take Epicurus – he dedicated his life to seeking out pleasure, creating a philosophy now known as Epicureanism. As you travel through Greece you’ll encounter religious celebrations – Greek Orthodox is the main player here – that span the nation, as well as smaller celebrations that are regional affairs or isolated to particular islands. Expect food, drink, dancing and music, and plenty of throwbacks to the ancient Greeks. The only Greek tragedy is that you can’t fit every festival in.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Greece has historically been a very safe place to visit though petty crime, like pickpocketing, can be an issue in well-touristed areas. Travelers should remain alert when visiting crowded places and keep an eye on their belongings.

Do you need a visa for Greece?

Greece is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Greece, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Greece.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in Greece?

There is not a strong tradition of tipping in Greece, particularly among the locals, but it’s become expected that tourists leave small tips while traveling through the country.

What is the internet access like in Greece?

You’ll be able to find wi-fi at most hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants throughout the well-touristed areas of Greece. Alternatively, you can pick up a local SIM card with a data package for continued access.

Can I use my cell phone in Greece?

If you wish to use your cell phone while in Greece and you are not from an EU country, you’ll need to pick up a local SIM card or activate global roaming before you leave home.

What are the toilets like in Greece?

Flushable, Western-style toilets are the norm in Greece. You may need to pay a small fee to use public toilets in some areas. Keep in mind that the Greek plumbing system isn’t the greatest and you may be asked to put toilet paper in the trash rather than flushing it.

Can I drink the water in Greece?

Drinking the water in Athens and Thessaloniki is safe unless otherwise marked. On the islands, however, the water may not be suitable to drink.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Greece?

Credit cards are widely accepted in  Greece , particularly in the tourist areas. It’s actually a legal requirement, as a response to the financial crisis, that working Greek citizens aged below 65 have a credit card so most hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants should offer the option of paying by credit card.

It’s still worth having some euros on hand, if only to tip the bartender at your favorite island bar and guarantee quick service all evening.

What is ATM access like in Greece?

ATMs can be easily found in cities and towns across Greece, including on the Greek Islands.

What is the weather like in Greece?

Greece’s coast and islands enjoy a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and windy, rainy winters, while the inland regions have a more continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. In the northern mountains, close to the Bulgarian border, the winters are cold with heavy snowfall , while the summers are relatively mild.

Is Greece safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Greece is one of the most popular LGBTQIA+ holiday destinations in the world, with a long history of same-sex relationships dating back to Sappho, the Greek poet, whose home island of Lesvos has become a pilgrimage site for lesbians. Though same-sex marriage is not legal, marriages performed in the EU have been recognized since 2018 and discrimination against sexual orientation or gender identity is banned by law.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Greece accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Though access to sights and hotels has improved in Athens over recent years, Greece is a difficult destination for travelers with disabilities. It’s a hilly, rocky place covered in cobblestones, particularly on the islands, and the economic situation has meant that there are minimal public funds to improve the situation.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Greece?

What to pack for Greece will depend on where you're going and what time of year you decide to visit. Comfortable walking shoes are essential all year round, as is a jumper in case a cool wind blows.

If you visit in summer, you’ll need light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, a hat, swimwear and sandals.

If you’re heading to the mountains on the mainland, it’s best to be prepared for everything as the weather can change quickly.

What are some common phrases to learn before traveling to Greece?

Greek is a very difficult language to learn. However, it's easy enough to master a couple of common words such as 'hello' (yah-soo) and 'please' (para-kah-LOE). Not only will this help you communicate with the locals, but it'll allow you to form a deeper connection to the places you're visiting and the people you meet along the way.

How many islands are there in Greece?

There are roughly 6,000 islands and islets in Greece, of which only about 200 are populated. Each island offers spectacular views of the surrounding seas, golden beaches to lie out on, and ancient old towns full of fascinating sites.

How will I travel around Greece?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Greece, you may find yourself traveling by:

Live like a local resident by hopping on a local bus. Cheap, efficient and fast, it’s a great way to get around Greece’s busy cities.

Some of Greece’s most postcard-worthy scenery is best viewed from the water. Take in awesome views of quaint fishing villages, gorgeous   beaches  and the turquoise Aegean Sea as you hop between Greece’s famed islands aboard a ferry.

Greece Tours

Greece is all about ancient ruins and sun-kissed islands surrounded by the sparkling Aegean Sea. Steeped in myth and legend, the country invites you to slow down and rediscover life’s simple pleasures.

Take a leisurely stroll down the cobblestone alleys of Mykonos where bright pink bougainvillea bloom over whitewashed buildings set against the deep blue sea. Bask in a sublime sunset in Santorini, famous for its blue-and-white tinted buildings and black sand beaches. Spend the evenings at bustling tavernas where you can feast on flavorful moussakas and flaky pies.

To get to the heart of ancient Greece, though, you must visit Athens, the capital. The Acropolis, perched on a hilltop, rises above the city, and includes the Parthenon, a 2,400-year-old temple dedicated to Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. Continue your history and mythology lesson in Delphi, home to the Temple of Apollo. Overlooking a lush valley, the ruins in the hillside town open a window to the region’s fabled past.

From uncovering the historic sites of Athens to unwinding in some of the most stunning beaches, there’s much to do and see in Greece. Our cruises and Greek island tours allow you to experience the very best of the country at an affordable price, without compromising on safety and comfort. 11 Best Places to Go to Greece in April 2024

Greece in April is at its best, every single field, valley, city, or mountain has blossomed with a huge variety of wildflowers and herbs. This year especially April has been the warmest ever, mid-25 C almost every day and sunny. This is great for April tourists but it is – definitely – not the normal weather for Greece this time of the year.

If you choose to visit Greece in April, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the authentic essence of the country, far from the hustle and bustle of summer crowds. Additionally, you’ll discover that accommodation and dining options offer great value for money during this time of year.

Some houses beside the beach and boats in the sea in Nydri. Best Places to Go to Greece in April.

Lefkada is a gorgeous island that belongs to the Ionian group along with Corfu, Zakynthos, and Kephalonia on the western side of Greece. Lefkada is uniquely connected to the mainland by a floating bridge easily reached by car, so you avoid the hassle of ferries . The island is famous for some of the most spectacular beaches in Greece.

Nydri is a stunning seaside village, in eastern Lefkada. Built along the sea, combines beautifully the largest, fertile plain of the island, Egglimeno, with the five mountains that surround it.

Nydri Lefkada with yachts. Best Places to Go to Greece in April.

Right across from Nydri, you can see the small island of Madouri with the neoclassical mansion of Aristotle Valaoritis and the Scorpio island of Onassis. The beach of Nidri is the most popular point of the settlement, as from there you can admire the stunning sunset.

A view to the sea from a balcony, Villa Meliti in Nydri, Lefkada. Best Places to Go to Greece in April.

greece tours april 2024

The impressive Monemvasia, or “Gibraltar of the East” is a small town with great natural beauty and history in the eastern Peloponnese . Monemvasia will charm you as soon as you set foot on this beautiful medieval Mediterranean setting.

The town is a large Byzantine Castle built on a rock. One of the best things to do in Monemvasia is to go up to the fortress and gaze at the breathtaking, panoramic view of the city.

A traditional Alley with tables and chairs and some plants in pots.

Walk through the narrow alleys with blooming bougainvillea, and the renovated mansions with traditional shops, and feel like time has stopped. Don’t miss visiting the Muslim mosque – a preserved building of the 16th century where the Archaeological Collection of the settlement is now housed -, as well as the remarkable Byzantine churches.

Best Hotel with an incredible view to stay in Monemvasia: Guesthouse Kellia (mid-range, child-friendly).

3. Galaxidi Town near Delphi

Galaxidi town with sea in a clear sky.

Galaxidi is a beautiful seaside town on the Corinthian Gulf, across from the Peloponnese, with a great maritime history. I love Galaxidi because of its traditional color, the 18th-century mansions, and captains’ houses, and the ‘island’ feeling as you stroll its lovely coast.

greece tours april 2024

Galaxidi has the charm of a non-commercialized town in Greece and with the island-like nature and cobbled alleys, this is one of the best places to go to Greece in April.

Must – Do and See in Galaxidi :

  • Drink a coffee or ouzo at Palio Liotrivi
  • Bike to the forested area of Pera Panta
  • Drive for 20 minutes to Delphi , or

4. Methoni Village in the Peloponnese

The small seaside town of Methoni is one of the most famous areas of southwestern Peloponnese. I have spent many summer days in my beloved Methoni and still have many friends there. Should you need a dentist, while you are in Methoni, ask for Zoe, she is the best dentist in the world, I have known her for more than 20 years and she is also a great cat person.

Limeni is one of the most beautiful seaside villages in Mani southern Peloponnese, with amazing emerald waters and stone mansions. Cobbled streets, stone-built houses in traditional Mani architecture, ornate bell towers, and crystal clear waters make up a fairy-tale landscape, which preserves intact Greek authenticity and beauty.

Limeni beach, some houses and a tavern beside the sea in a sunny day.

Most of the beach in Limeni is rocky even in the sea, but there is a beautiful long sandy beach between Neo Oitilo and Karavostasi. Arriving in Limeni, you will admire the Petrobeis Palace with its four-story Tower and its arched openings.

Must see: The large cave of Diros, Areopolis, Vatheia, and Gythio villages.

Where Best to Stay: Limeni Village (mid-range, family-friendly).

7. Andros Island: Best Cycladic Island to Visit in April

An alley in Andros Chora with colorful houses and a Greek Chrurch.

Andros Island is just 2 hours away from Athens’ smaller port of Rafina, a real hidden gem. Although quite popular to Greeks and other Europeans, and as beautiful as the other Cycladic islands, Andros is not so widely known to the rest of the world.

A distinctive characteristic of Andros island is that a large part of it is quite green, with fertile valleys, olive groves, 10 flowing rivers all year long, and even waterfalls! In April, Andros becomes lush green with beautiful wildflowers and aromatic herbs such as thyme and oregano.

Must see in Andros: Andros’ classy main town is full of museums and galleries. Many villages around the island and a hiking paradise full of signposted trails.

Where Best to Stay in Andros Island: The Lasia Boutique Apartment (Children over 12 are welcome).

8. Meteora Monasteries (Top Destination for Greece in April)

A monk in Meteora Monasteries.

The Meteora Monasteries is one of the Best Places to Visit in Greece ! The rocks are an extensive complex of gigantic sandstone rocks shadowing the local town Kalambaka, 347 km north of Athens. On top of the rocks, you can visit the 6 working Monasteries that accept public visits on specific days and times.

The Meteora Monasteries have been a UNESCO World Heritage Monument since 1988 and it is today the second most important monastic complex in Greece after Mount Athos Monasteries in Chalkidiki.

You can stay for at least one night in Kalambaka, the town at the feet of Meteora Rocks, and climb the monasteries in spring, one of the best times to visit the rocks. You can combine your visit to Meteora with a stop at the Delphi archaeological site on a 2 to 3-day trip from Athens.

9. Chios Island for Greek Easter

Vrontados Village and some fishing boats in a sunny day.

Chios is a uniquely beautiful island, very close to Lesvos island in the eastern part of Greece, and one of the best places to go to Greece in April.

Chios is a great island to enjoy the most spectacular Greek Orthodox Easter Celebrations. The Easter week starts on April 29th to Easter Day on May 5th, 2024.

greece tours april 2024

The island is famous for its most dynamic ‘rocket war’ in Vrontados village on Great Saturday. Just as the bells are ringing joyfully for the Resurrection, rockets, and fireworks are fired from the churches of Agios Markos and Panagia Erythiani in Vrontados, aiming at each other’s parish. And when the “war” is over, the families reunite and wish each other Chronia Polla!

A colorful valley with voukamvilias and a lady walking.

Chios Greece is also famous for its mastic production, citrus fruits, and its unique medieval village, the Mastichochoria. One of the most popular ones is Kampos village, with its imposing mansions and high mantle walls made of thyme stone, flooded with wildflowers and wild tulips. You can reach Chios from Athens via ferries.

Best Medieval Hotel on Chios Island: St. George Sykoussis Traditional Residence (mid-range, family-friendly).

10. Corfu Island for Greek Easter

greece tours april 2024

Corfu Island belongs to the Ionian group in western Greece. The Old Town of Corfu is a UNESCO-listed monument and is one of the best places to go to Greece in April to enjoy the Greek Orthodox Easter.

In Corfu island , you will experience a fascinating Easter with religious splendor which starts on the Saturday of Lazarus with the custom of ‘Botides’ throwing from the balconies and ends on Easter Tuesday with the “baptisms” of St. Spyridon. Botides are clay jugs with narrow mouths and two handles on the side for carrying them.

If you love the Olympic Games you should visit Athens in April! In 2024 the Olympic games will be held in Paris, France. As customary, the Olympic flame will travel from Ancient Olympia to Athens and then to Paris.

greece tours april 2024

Starting its journey on April 16 from Olympia, the Olympic Flame will cover over 5,000 kilometers in 41 municipalities of Greece. The torchbearers will stop at various archaeological sites and on April 26th the flame will arrive at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, where the modern Olympic Games were revived in 1896.

The Mayor of Athens suggested that there will be organized various athletic events and celebrations for the Olympics. This is a great time for everyone to admire up close the Olympic rituals in Athens and participate in the events.

Where Best to Stay in Athens

greece tours april 2024

I suggest you stay away from the area where the stadium is (Pangrati and Mets) as it will be very noisy with all the feasts. For accommodation, you should check out the nearby and picturesque area of Plaka , Koukaki, or even better why not choose a beachfront hotel in Athens? ;D

I’d love to hear about where you’re spending your vacation this year, especially if you have any exciting travel plans! There are so many things to do in Greece in April! I hope that you get the chance to try as many as possible. Till next time, Evgenia❤️

A visit to unesco byzantine daphni monastery in athens, corfu island: the best things to do in 2024, 2 thoughts on “11 best places to go to greece in april 2024”.

Hello Evgenia! Thank you for the informative article. We are considering a trip the first two weeks of April. We are told many of the islands are on hiatus except for what the local citizens use. Is this true? We are also considering traveling the first two weeks of May. However, I have also read that some establishments that are away from the tourist towns of Fira and such use the Easter holiday as an opening date. However, this year Easter falls late, May 12, 2024. Your thoughts? Thank you in advance for any time you can lend.

Hello Rachel and thanks for your comment. I am glad you found my article informative 🙂 The islands are places where permanent residents live so everything related to their life there works 365/7. When it comes to toursim, and this is very dependable on how big an island is, in April the majority of the businesses will be open. I believe the beach bars or some other open business might wait until it gets really warm to open. Greek Easter falls on May 5th and by then everything will be open. I hope this helps 🙂 If you need more specific help, please fill in this form and we will get back to you with ideas! https://travelthegreekway.com/plan-my-trip-to-greece/

Greece Tours: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to visit Greece for a vacation?

Greece’s climate changes significantly throughout the year, so you should plan your visit around your preferred weather. The summer is the peak season for Greece tours because that’s when the weather is warmest. That also means you have to deal with large crowds if you visit during the summer, which isn’t ideal for everyone. The shoulder seasons — spring and autumn — are a better time to visit if you want to avoid traffic. While the weather isn’t quite as warm as it is during the summer, visiting in the spring or autumn gives you an opportunity to enjoy a more authentic Greece vacation.

What are the must-visit islands during a Greece vacation?

Greece is home to several beautiful islands that travelers love to visit. Some of the islands you must see during your trip to Greece include Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu. Santorini is the premier vacation spot in Greece, offering stunning views that only get better as you get higher up in the cliffs. This is where most people go when they visit Greece. Mykonos is another Greek island that’s known for its beauty. Sitting at the center of the Cyclades group of islands, Mykonos combines stunning natural views with bustling nightlife. Crete is the largest and most populous Greek island, making it a great place to visit during your Greece vacation. If you want a more historical experience, Rhodes and Corfu offer a combination of natural beauty and historical importance that visitors love. Whether you’re taking one of our Christian Alaska cruises or a trip to Greece, there are scenic islands all over the world.

What are the top historical sites to visit in Greece?

Just like our Germany tours , our Greek tours give you a chance to visit several historical sites that played an important role in European and Christian history. The Acropolis is an ancient citadel that sits above the city of Athens. Here you can find the remains of several key historical structures, including the Parthenon. The Palace of Knossos in Crete is an important Bronze Age archaeological site. This palace also experienced the fall of the Ottoman Empire which eventually led to Crete and Greece unifying. The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus was home to dramatic shows and games near the end of the 4th century BC. Constructed by Polykleitos the Younger, this theater has been used to host occasional modern events as well.

What local Greek dishes should I try?

You can find a wide variety of food on our U.S. tours , but Greece and many other countries are known for making their own unique, world-renowned dishes. Moussaka is similar to lasagna but it’s typically made with potato or eggplant along with ground lamb or beef. It’s not easy to make, but it’s well worth it. Spanakopita is a savory spinach pie that’s popular in Greece, made with spinach, feta, and a crispy phyllo pastry. Souvlaki is grilled meat — and sometimes vegetables — cooked on a skewer and often served with tzatziki, a Greek dip made from yogurt, cucumber, and other ingredients. Baklava is a traditional Greek dessert that’s made of many layers of pastry sheets with chopped nuts. If you have a sweet tooth, baklava is a must-try.

What are the visa requirements for visiting Greece?

Before booking your Greece and Europe tour, make sure you have a valid passport and research visa requirements. If your passport is about to expire, you may be denied entry to Greece. As far as visa requirements go, you may need a visa if you’re not from a Schengen country. You may be able to visit Greece for a period of time without a visa if you’re a US citizen. Take a moment to check the latest visa requirements from an official source or the Greek embassy in your country.

Can I use my credit card everywhere in Greece?

Like our Ireland tours , you can use your credit card in many stores and restaurants throughout Greece without a problem. Visa and Mastercard credit cards are widely accepted in many parts of the world, so you can bring your credit card with you and swipe it most places you go. Keep in mind that US credit cards aren’t accepted everywhere, so it’s smart to carry some cash. Cash is especially important when you’re visiting rural areas and smaller islands. You can convert USD to euro at several banks throughout Greece.

What is the typical tipping etiquette in Greece?

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory, so you don’t have to tip if you don’t want to. Generally speaking, you should leave a 5-10% tip at a restaurant if the service is good. You should also round up fares for taxis to give your drivers a small tip. Whether you book a Greece vacation or one of our Costa Rica tours , make sure you carry some extra cash for tips.

What people love about Greek Islands Tours in April

Phenomenal time with a great group. It was a real party! And with a large group, you are sure to find your people.
Great sites and had a blast with our tour group! Our Tour Director was awesome!
The overall experience was nice with having private drivers, however a few things could have been explained a bit better. When arriving at the port, a gate assignment would have helped for the ferry. Maybe a link to the Sea Jet website? The motel in Mykonos was vary dated, with broken furniture, and light fixtures in the room. It was also a very long way from anything if you were walking. It was quite remote, and probably one I would have never considered as the port and restaurants/ shops were all 2.5 miles away.

John Lewis is keeping its school uniform prices frozen for the fourth year running.

The department store chain also offers parents an online school uniform checklist to help prepare for the start of the new year.

It also offers a free shoe-fitting service, while some of its newer school uniform products released in the last three years have not seen a price rise.

John Lewis school uniform buyer Cydney Ball said: "Our customers trust us as the one-stop-shop for all things back to school."

Cineworld is drawing up plans to axe dozens of British cinemas as part of a radical restructuring that would also include extensive rent cuts.

Sky News has learned that the company, which until last year was listed on the London Stock Exchange, is considering closing about a quarter of its roughly-100 British multiplexes.

Cineworld also wants to renegotiate rent agreements at a further 50 sites, with the remaining 25 untouched by the restructuring.

Sources said the proposals were expected to be formally outlined to creditors including landlords in the coming weeks.

A safety charity has warned England fans against buying cheap electronics online amid a "blitz" of advertising.

Electrical Safety First is urging fans bombarded with ads for discounted goods "don't bring it home" in a new campaign to raise awareness of unregulated online marketplaces.

The charity have previously uncovered substandard and dangerous electrical products across major online marketplaces.

Examples of such include portable heaters posing a serious risk of electrocution, hair straighteners and hair dryers featuring illegal UK plugs and e-bike chargers that pose a fire risk.

"Football, and other global sporting events, are experiencing advertising blitzes by major online marketplaces across the globe, and at a time when millions of people are struggling with finances, we understand how appealing low-cost deals will be," said Electrical Safety First's chief executive Lesley Rudd.

"But it's important for fans to remember that they risk scoring an own goal if the deal they bag turns out to be a substandard or dangerous product.

"Substandard electronics can have serious consequences for your safety and an innocent purchase could put you and your family at risk."

The charity makes the following suggestions to consumers selecting electronics from online marketplaces:

  • Pay attention to the plug - if a product is listed with a foreign plug and travel adaptor, do not buy it.
  • Do not buy on price alone - not all bargains are worth it
  • Make sure you do your homework if you decide to buy products below high street retail prices.
  • Beware of a product with solely glowing reviews, especially if the reviewers are not verified.
  • Make sure you know where the supplier is based - a "co.uk" URL doesn't guarantee the website is UK-based.
  • If there is no address supplied, or there is just a PO Box, be wary; many dodgy electrical goods are manufactured overseas.
  • Look for websites that allow you to pay safely – these have a padlock symbol in the address bar of the website you are visiting. If you cannot see it, do not enter your payment details.

Consumer spending on car purchases has risen three times faster than for public transport journeys, new figures show.

Around £57.4bn was spent in the UK on new and used cars in 2023, up 6% on five years earlier, according to AA analysis of Office for National Statistics data.

By comparison, consumer spending on public transport - including rail, buses, flights and taxis - was £60.9bn, representing a 2% increase on five years ago.

AA head of roads policy Jack Cousens claimed the figures highlight how vital motoring was for people in the UK, as well as the country's finances.

He said: "These latest ONS figures underline the UK's reliance on cars and the huge amounts of money they generate for the economy - not to mention VAT on that spending, and other tax.

"Cars are not just necessary but essential on so many levels. Even if a significant amount of car use was transformed into take-up of public transport, the impact on the economy and other income generation would be dramatic.

"Just think how much councils would lose if a high percentage of cars stopped turning up to their car parks or needing parking permits, and getting fined.

"The key question is whether what consumers spend on cars would translate into income for public transport and cover the cost of infrastructure investment to enable that.

"It seems that getting travelling consumers to fork out for their own transport and its maintenance, and then tax the heck out of them, is a pretty good deal for the public purse."

Running a car also accounted for a large chunk of the £78.6bn spent on what is described as the operation of personal transport, with spending on fuel and lubricants up 20% since 2018 to £41.7bn.

New car purchases down

But despite the fact more consumers are spending money on cars than on public transport, the number of purchases of new cars by private buyers has declined for nine months in a row, new figures show.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said 67,625 new cars were registered by private consumers in June, down 15.3% from 79,798 during the same month last year.

Ian Plummer, commercial director at Auto Trader, said: "With average new car prices rising almost 40% over the last five years, it's clear cost is the culprit.

"Manufacturers are responding with discounts but they're failing to keep pace, which is forcing many buyers to opt for a used alternative.

"Whoever forms the next government needs to address electric car affordability and provide long-term stability for the market."

Environmental impact

Despite comments from the AA, the billions of pounds spent by consumers every year on cars is having a clear effect on UK roads - where overall traffic levels in 2023 were 2.2% higher than the previous year.

More cars on the roads means more air pollution, which is among the biggest environmental health risks facing people in the UK.

Burning petrol and diesel fuel creates harmful by products like nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide, while vehicles emit carbon dioxide, the most common human-caused greenhouse gas.

Even electric vehicles produce particulate matter from the friction between their tyres and the road.

Researchers from University College London estimated that 48,625 adults die prematurely each year in the UK due to particulate matter pollution.

Presently, 79% of the UK exceeds the World Health Organization's (WHO) annual mean guideline for safe fine particulate matter levels.

A Greek restaurant has faced criticism for its "rip off" prices.

Holidaymakers have been warned to stay away from DK Oyster on the popular holiday island of Mykonos, which has received swathes of bad reviews on  Tripadvisor .

The restaurant, which describes itself as being an "oasis of ultimate luxury and extravagance", has an average star rating of two on the website - although, in the interests of balance, it has 4.8 on Google reviews.

Angry punters say they were lured into buying a drink at DK Oyster after being told the sunbeds were free, only for the prices for those drinks to be sky-high.

Among the latest to complain is Lori E, who said she returned home from her Greek holiday to see a charge of $876 (£690) for two drinks.

She wrote: "Total rip off! Make sure you get a receipt before leaving and check your credit card because they over charge.

"Was told beds were free to sit it if we order food or drink. No problem....ordered 2 drinks which we afterwards saw were 51 euros each.

"If that wasn't crazy enough we returned to the states and had a $876 charge on our account. FOR 2 DRINKS!!!"

The tourists are now trying to dispute the charge with their credit card company after never receiving a paper copy of a receipt.

Responding to the Tripadvisor review, DK Oyser said: "Our sunbeds come with minimum consumption, so we encourage all visitors to check the menus, before placing their orders.

"I would like to note that our menus are displayed on blackboards near the entrance, showing the prices of our food and drinks to keep our guests informed."

Other reviews claim DK Oyser charged them £253 for sea bass and £100 for a jumbo shrimp that "wasn't cooked properly".

DK Oyster has been contacted for comment.

Iceland is set to partner with parenting website Mumsnet to launch a range of children's products.

Mumsnet CEO Justine Roberts, and the brand's partnership director Sarah Murray-Muncila, met with members of Iceland's innovation team last week to work on the products.

According to The Grocer , the new products will hit the stores in early 2025.

"We've been working on something truly special in partnership with Iceland Foods," Mumsnet said.

"Big things are happening for little ones."

Iceland has launched several new collaborations in recent months, including exclusive products with brands such as Slimming World, MyProtein and boxer Tyson Fury's Furocity.

It's not just a big day in the UK with voters heading to the polls but also in the US with 4 July celebrations taking place.

And there's plenty to celebrate for those with a stake in US stocks.

Last night, there was another record high for the S&P 500 index that tracks the share price performance of the 500 largest companies listed on US stock exchanges.

The performance of companies on the tech firm-heavy New York-based NASDAQ too reached a new high.

It came as Elon Musk's Tesla saw its share price reaching a six-month high, along with the rise and rise of trillion-dollar AI microchip maker Nvidia.

Today and tomorrow will likely be quieter as the US markets close.

In the UK, both the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) 100 and 250 indexes are up - 0.76% in the list of 100 most valuable companies and 0.42% in the 101st to 250th most valued firms.

While the pound does by buy less euro than it did earlier this month, with £1 equal to €1.18 it's still buying more than during most of the last year.

Against the dollar, sterling has held the gains of the last few weeks and a pound will get you $1.2749.

There is no let up for motorists as the oil price is sticking around the two-month high mark. A barrel of the benchmark Brent crude oil costs $86.59.

As house prices continue to rise, so too does the age at which young people can expect to own their own home.

Unfortunately, even the ceiling of the term "young people" isn't far off from being challenged - with fresh research suggesting that the average age of a first-time buyer in the UK is 33 years and 8 months old, according to Mojo Mortgages .

In comparison, in 1960, the average first-time buyer was 23 years old, according to separate research by Keepmoat Homes.

Comparatively, however, the average age of a first-time buyer in 2014 was 32 years, 6 months old, according to the Office for National Statistics.

During the same period, the average price of a house in the UK rose from around £188,000 (January 2014) to £282,000  ( January this year).

Back to today's figures - and those in Wales are able to buy their homes the youngest, with the data suggesting the average first-time buyer there is 31 years old.

Naturally, the older you buy a home, the later in life you'll pay off a mortgage.

With an average mortgage length of 30 years, it seems the average UK first-time buyer isn't expected to be mortgage-free until they are 63 years and 8 months old.

And if you live in the capital, you'll surpass the current retirement age at 66 years, 8 months.

Here's a full breakdown of how old first-time buyers are, the average mortgage length and age they can expect to be mortgage-free by region...

A lot of people have had to renegotiate or extend their mortgages thanks to soaring interest rates in recent years - and the data from Mojo tells us a little about that too.

The study found extending your mortgage term by 10 years (to 35 years) will cost today's average first-time buyer an extra £110,640, which may impact later life planning and their pension.

Barclaycard is cutting the minimum amount its customers have to repay each month.

While the move may sound like good news on the surface, it could well mean you're in debt for longer and end up paying more interest.

At the moment, most Barclaycard customers have a minimum repayment of 3.75% of their balance, 2.5% of their balance plus interest, or £5.

But, from 22 July, that will change to the highest amount out of:

  • 1% of their balance
  • 1% of their balance plus interest

This means if you are currently only paying the minimum on your card, you'll likely repay less each month.

But, minimum amounts are designed to keep people in debt for as long as possible, and lowering them just makes this period even longer.

MoneySavingExpert says the change means it could now take a customer with a £1,000 debt an extra decade to pay it off, if they only pay the minimum amount.

On average, it says it will take 19 years and three months to clear and the interest will total £1,655.

Founder of MoneySavingExpert Martin Lewis says the change is "worryingly under the radar" and urged customers to check if their repayments are set to the minimum amount.

"Minimum repayments have always been credit card firms' secret weapon. Letting people repay little looks appealing – hence why Barclaycard says this is about 'flexibility'. Yet it takes flexibility to kick your own backside, and this will hurt some just as much," he said.

A Barclays spokesperson told Sky News: "We regularly review our products and from July, some Barclaycard customers will see changes to their minimum monthly payments, alongside adjustments to the APR.

"Customers will benefit from a reduction in their minimum monthly repayment and the vast majority have no change to APR, while some will receive a decrease.

"We have made these changes to increase flexibility for our customers and have been clear in our communications that paying more than the minimum can help customers clear their balance sooner and pay less interest."

Marks and Spencer is to launch a clothing repair service next month.

The retail giant has teamed up with clothing repair and alterations experts SOJO, which was founded in 2021 by Josephine Philips, to give clothes "another life".

From August, M&S customers will be able to book a bespoke repair service through a new online hub, "M&S Fixed by SOJO".

Repairs will start from £5 and be carried out by SOJO's in-house repair team.

The items will then be returned directly to the customer's doorstep within seven to 10 days.

Richard Price, managing director of clothing and home at M&S, said: "Through the launch of our repair service, we're making it even easier for customers to give their clothes another life, whether they are using our new repair service or long-standing clothes recycling scheme."
