FAMILY CRUISES ON CARNIVAL
Find out why Carnival is the best cruise line for families in 2024 and beyond.
MORE FAMILY MEANS MORE FUN ON YOUR FAMILY’S CARNIVAL CRUISE
Everybody finds it all here.
We keep everybody busy — and nobody bored — all cruise long.
Families like yours bring the fun spirit to a Carnival cruise… but give us a little credit too! Carnival makes sure everybody finds the fun they’re looking for on their vacation, with great activities to enjoy together, or as individuals. For one thing, we’ve got supervised youth spaces where kids can hang out and make new friends. Parents get to do their own thing too… plus there’s great things for families to do all together!
THERE’S BIG FUN IN CARNIVAL’S YOUTH PROGRAMS
What makes Carnival a great choice for kid-friendly cruises? We know that one size doesn’t fit all… but each size fits somebody just right! That’s why Carnival has a range of supervised programs for kids of all age groups, where they can meet up, have fun, enjoy learning experiences and make friends while hanging out with others their own age. From storytime to science, crafts to cultural enrichment, sports to sing-alongs… we help kids and teens get fun done.
- TURTLES (UNDER 2)
- CAMP OCEAN PENGUINS (2-5 YEARS)
- CAMP OCEAN STINGRAYS (6-8 YEARS)
- CAMP OCEAN SHARKS (9-11 YEARS)
- CIRCLE "C" (12-14 YEARS)
- CLUB O2 (15-17 YEARS)
FUN & FLEXIBILITY FOR FAMILIES
Fun happens for everyone on a Carnival cruise, but that doesn’t mean everyone’s idea of fun has to be the same. That’s why variety is key for families, and a Carnival cruise has fun for kids, teens and adults… plus the flexibility to either enjoy things together or do your own thing for a bit. That just might be along the lines of waterslides, mini-golf, live entertainment, or fun and enriching experiences from partners like Dr. Seuss, Zumbini and even the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
- ROPES COURSE
- DIVE-IN MOVIES
- VIDEO ARCADE
- BOLT: ULTIMATE SEA COASTER
- SPORTSQUARE
- FAMILY FEUD LIVE
- SEUSS AT SEA
- BUILD-A-BEAR WORKSHOP AT SEA
OH… PARENTS TOO, OF COURSE!
What goes into the perfect date night? Great drinks, dancing under the stars, a stage show… and this wouldn’t be the best family cruise without the one thing parents need most: dependable childcare! A Carnival cruise takes care of the essentials so you can — day or night — explore, enjoy and indulge in great ways to put the “you two” in “family vacation.”
ENJOY FAMILY DINING AND KID-FRIENDLY FOOD
“YUM, THAT’S MY FAVORITE!” –LITERALLY EVERYONE ON CARNIVAL
How can we be so sure you’re going to love the food on your Carnival cruise? Because there’s such amazing variety, from casual munching to sit-down dining, fancy stuff and beyond. Some examples: steakhouse, sushi, family-style Italian, tacos, burgers and more. We serve up so much variety that even the pickiest eaters can find new favorites at every restaurant, and tons of great options are included in your cruise fare! Plus the food is as flexible as you are hungry. Room service is always on the menu, 24 hours a day, and delivery is just a quick call away. Also very much available: the pizza station stays open until 4 a.m. — just in case you show up! — and our soft-serve machines don’t quit until the clock strikes midnight.
EXPLORE NEW PLACES AS A FAMILY
There are great destinations all over the globe, and a Carnival cruise can take you to spots with just the sights and vibes you’re looking for. And because we’re Carnival, you know we’re ready to help you find the most fun stuff to do in each!
CARIBBEAN & THE BAHAMAS CRUISES
Carnival is known for taking families to islands across the Caribbean and The Bahamas. That sounds to us like fun in the sun! And who — young or grown — would say no to a vacation of beaches, calypso music and swimming with dolphins? Could anyone pass up catamaran sailings, glass-bottom boat tours, exploring islands by Jeep or ATV… not to mention the chance to paddleboard, jet-ski or kayak? We’re honestly not sure… because we haven’t met them yet!
MEXICO CRUISES
Mexico is a family destination with two different destinations in it: the islandy east coast that shows off the Gulf, and the Pacific coast with its stunning desert style. Some of the best ways to see them would be, let’s see, on the east coast… exploring ancient ruins on land or gazing at spectacular undersea life through a snorkel mask. And on the west coast, try surveying the scene on horseback, flying down a zipline, or doing some whale watching with the best scenery.
ALASKA CRUISES
Alaska isn’t cold in the summer months… but it’s definitely still cool! Chill while taking in views of wildlife, mountains, glaciers, history and more — this is the perfect way to open young eyes to some of the world’s most stunning natural beauty. But don’t just look at it, get into the action with dogsledding, gold panning, a scenic railroad ride and more!

ROOMS DESIGNED FOR FAMILIES
Whether you keep it cozy or let the kids have their own space, Carnival has stateroom options practically designed for your family! Some staterooms sleep up to five, and feature flexible bedding configurations. Some rooms come with a view, some with balconies, and some even have an extra half-bathroom — nice! And some connect to the room next-door, for the greatest family flexibility. And we can’t leave out the Family Harbor staterooms on select ships, which add nautical decor and fam-favorite exclusive perks like access to a families-only lounge, kids eating free at most specialty restaurants and more.
GREAT IDEAS FOR WHEN TO CRUISE
Cruise during the summer.
Planning a summer cruise is nice and easy, because with the kids out of school there’s plenty of space to fit a vacation into your calendar. (And for the kids… we know it’s not a competition, but get ready to totally win at “how I spent my summer vacation.”)
CRUISE FOR SPRING BREAK
When you see an opening on your calendar that looks perfect for a week off when the weather’s just right… grab it! Kids can head back to school refreshed and ready to wind down the school year.
SHORT CRUISES ANYTIME
Nobody needs a reason for a quick vacation — think along the lines of a long weekend or so — and just go. But if you want a great reason: it’s how easy short cruises are to plan! You’ll be back home with your new memories before you know it.
CELEBRATE A HOLIDAY AT SEA
Spending a holiday like Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving or New Year’s on a Carnival cruise doesn’t just make it unforgettable, it makes it easy: we do the cooking, we do the cleaning, we do the entertaining. So why not bring everybody?

Disney Cruise Line
No one will be surprised that entertainment juggernaut Disney offers an amazing family cruise experience.
Disney Cruise Line ships are known for meet-and-greets with Mickey Mouse and Disney princesses, interactive movie-themed dining experiences and enormous kids clubs and play areas.
What might surprise the uninitiated is how good the line is at taking care of the whole family, not just the Mouse-obsessed little ones.
Disney thinks of all the little things that can help parents have a stress-free trip with kids in tow. From split bathrooms (allowing one family member to take a bath while another uses the toilet) to waiters who will cut up your child's food, Disney Cruise Line takes the pressure off parents.
While other cruise lines limit water play to kids who are toilet trained and drop-off child care to ages 3 and up, Disney caters to all kids with onboard splash areas and nurseries.
It also offers adults-only pool decks and restaurants, a nightlife scene and couples spa treatments to revive exhausted parents who haven't had a date in months.
Teens might roll their eyes at the ever-present Mickeys, but Disney Cruise Line does not ignore its older kid guests. Tweens and teens get their own cool hangouts, Edge and Vibe, with video games, foosball and hip seating areas.
Additionally, first-run movies and Broadway-caliber musicals, waterslides, teen spa treatments and grab-and-go food options (and free room service) keep older kids busy and happy.
Disney Wish and soon-to-debut Disney Treasure feature sports areas for free play and competitions attractive to this age group.

Royal Caribbean
With some of the biggest ships at sea and an amusement park-like private island in the Bahamas, Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruise lines for active families.
Want to try surfing, sky diving, rock climbing, laser tag, go-karts or zip lining? Families don't have to leave the ship to get their adrenaline highs.
Even the sedentary pursuits are high-octane on Royal Caribbean. Broadway musicals, festive parades, water acrobatic performances and ice skating shows wow the crowds on sea days.
Expansive play spaces for kids include separate clubs for teens and tweens, plus drop-off nurseries for babies.
Parents can sneak off to the adults-only solarium or thermal suite while the kids live it up at cruise camp.
After a hard day of play, worn-out families can refuel at a variety of restaurants, including burger and milkshake mecca Johnny Rockets, Italian and Mexican eateries and an all-day buffet.
Family cabins and connecting staterooms give larger families their needed space. The Ultimate Family Suite on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas can sleep eight, but parents and kids alike might be tempted to stay up late playing air hockey, scrambling up the climbing wall, soaking in the private outdoor hot tub or watching the giant TV.
When Icon of the Seas debuts in 2024, the new megaship will offer an entire section of the ship devoted to family-friendly accommodations and an outdoor dining-and-play space targeted at parents with young children.

Carnival Cruise Line
Practicalities first: Carnival Cruise Line is an affordable and convenient cruise line for families who don't live the jet-set lifestyle. With home ports all around the U.S., Carnival puts its ships within driving distance of many Americans.
A variety of short-cruise destinations, affordable-yet-spacious inside cabins (they can sleep four) and lots of onboard attractions and restaurants included in the fares combine to make it one of the best-value cruise lines afloat.
Carnival doesn't dub its fleet the Fun Ships for nothing. The whole family will have a blast on board, whether you like getting down to live music, busting a gut at family-friendly comedy shows, getting soaked at an onboard water park or eating green eggs and ham with Dr. Seuss characters.
The cruise line also embraces simple pleasures like free-flowing soft-serve ice cream and pizza and a day spent lounging by the pool.
Families don't need to pull out their wallets to feed ravenous teens or sugar-fueled children. Guy Fieri burgers and barbecue, burritos for breakfast and lunch and Shaquille O'Neal's fried chicken are all included in your cruise fares. No one's going to make you dress up for dinner, either.
Carnival ships have plenty of cabins that can sleep four or five passengers, but its newest ships truly treat families right. Book a Family Harbor cabin or suite and get access to a family lounge stocked with all the essentials — snacks and coffee, games, Wi-Fi, movies and a concierge to make bookings so mom and dad can spend more time playing with the kids.
MSC Cruises
The underdog on our list, MSC Cruises might not be a household name yet, but any cruise line that has a partnership with Lego should be on every family's radar.
As the Mediterranean line grows its U.S.-based fleet, it is staying attuned to the needs of traveling families.
Case in point: Larger family groups don't have to cram into one cabin or be scattered across the ship. Instead, they can select from a variety of connecting cabins that can accommodate up to 10 people.
Families keen on rooming together can take advantage of frequent "kids sail free" fares and pay only the taxes and fees for children under 18 who are the third and fourth passengers in a cabin.
Related: Kids cruise free: 7 cruise lines offering family deals in 2023
Speaking of kids clubs, MSC's ships offer play spaces for babies, kids, tweens and teens. Its ships not only offer a drop-off Baby Club with educational toys by Chicco but also a special baby laundry service to take care of that pile of dirty onesies.
Kids club activities go beyond arts and crafts and video games to include cooking events, sports competitions and hi-tech interactive games. Teens can sing karaoke, dance at the onboard disco and attend themed parties with their new friends.
Outside of the kids club, families can race in a Formula One simulator, experience virtual reality, get soaked in a water park or brave their fear of heights on a suspension bridge.
One of the line's newest ships, MSC Seascape, features Robotron, a three-seat robotic amusement ride that's a hit with thrill-seeking families.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line is all about giving cruisers options to create different versions of the perfect cruise vacation, all within the same ship.
The flexibility and choice make it one of the best cruise lines for families, especially those who need to satisfy diverse interests or get bored with the same activities day after day.
Kids clubs and adults-only sun decks allow for age-appropriate fun time apart, but Norwegian wants families to have fun together. Teaming up for laser tag, mastering a ropes course, singing along to a Broadway musical or live concert or screaming down a waterslide are guaranteed to create those unbreakable family bonds.
Norwegian's flexible dining system and a plethora of onboard eateries let families plan meals to suit their schedules and tastes.
Also, free kids meals at extra-charge restaurants mean parents can sample Brazilian, Japanese , French or seafood dishes while the littles gobble up pasta and chicken fingers. Casual all-day options suit fussy eaters who need unfussy dining areas.
The cruise line also gets a shoutout for its family-friendly Hawaii itineraries. The only big-ship cruise line that sails weeklong itineraries round trip from Honolulu, Norwegian provides an easy way for families to visit multiple islands.
Beach time, boat rides, water sports, luaus and volcano tours combine for an epic family trip, with the ship taking the stress out of meals and transportation.
Bottom line
Families can have a great time on any cruise line, hanging out by the pool, visiting exciting new destinations and simply spending time together. But if you're looking for a ship that really caters to kids and their adult companions, you'll want to book a vacation on one of these five best cruise lines for families.

Paid moment from American Express and Delta
With complimentary summer-camp-like kids’ programs led by youth counselors, alongside a host of attractions, it's no surprise the best family cruises deliver an environment where every family member can have fun on vacation. In addition to family time, kids get to hang out with other kids while parents and grandparents are free to be adults.
Youngsters are a major part of cruise ship design, from play rooms and teen clubs to crew members who know how to keep young people happy. Choose your ship wisely, because newer and recently renovated ships tend to have the most exciting attractions (check out our list of best cruise ships in the world if you want to know more). Accommodations at sea can be tight, so splurge on the largest cabin or suite you can afford; there is such a thing as too much togetherness on any trip. Beyond that, read our picks for the best cruise lines for families—and get going with booking. (Fares shown are per adult, with reduced fares for kids sharing a cabin.)

Royal Caribbean
For families, a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s massive ships —some can carry more than 6,000 passengers—is as exciting as going to an amusement park. Collectively, the ships offer ice skating rinks, simulated surfing machines, zip-lines, bumper cars, laser tag, carousels, and thrill slides. The Adventure Ocean program (for ages 3-12) includes fun science experiments, while teens get to party in their own disco. The new largest ship in the world, the 6,998-passenger Wonder of the Seas , boasts a fantastical undersea-themed Wonder Playscape, an outdoor playground with climbing walls, slides, games, and interactive features — such as a mural featuring sea creatures that come to life at the slightest touch. The ship sails from Barcelona and Rome (the port of Civitavecchia) this summer and fall. Seven-night sailings from $952 .
Disney Cruise Line
The hot ticket for Disney Cruise Line fans is the 4,000-passenger Disney Wish , which debuts on July 14 as the line’s fifth ship and first new ship in a decade. All-new features include an animated AquaMouse attraction (a wet ride on a 760-foot track), a Star Wars bar, and an Avengers-themed dining experience. On all of Disney’s ships, princesses and other characters pose for photos and star in full-scale musical productions highlighting Disney hits, like Frozen , eliciting squeals of delight. The family-centric vibe includes waitstaff who are experts in dealing with fussy eaters, and cabins with one-and-a-half bathrooms. The Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab (for ages 3-12) are themed with such attractions as a Marvel Super Hero Academy. Teens also have dedicated spaces onboard: Vibe for teens ages 14-17 and Edge for those between the ages of 11-14. Three-night Bahamas sailings from Port Canaveral from $1,751 in winter 2023.
Carnival Cruise Line
Carnival got a lot of attention last year when it introduced the 5,200-passenger Mardi Gras , with the “wow” feature of the first rollercoaster at sea. Sister ship Carnival Celebration , also with a rollercoaster, debuts in November 2022. The line caters to families in a big way with waterparks and twisting slides, outdoor ropes courses, and video arcades. A “Seuss at Sea” program encourages kids to read Dr. Seuss classics, with The Cat in the Hat appearing at a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast (complete with themed food). Family Harbor cabins and suites come with access to a private family lounge for breakfast, snacks, and video-game play. Camp Ocean entertains kids ages 2-11 with everything from crafts to dancing to video gaming, with separate clubs for tweens (ages 12-14) and teens (15-17). Seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailings from Port Canaveral on Mardi Gras this summer from $549.
Ritz-Carlton's all-suite Evrima yacht comes staffed with an on-board youth counselor.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Three of Norwegian’s latest ships are topped with two-deck racetracks where older kids and adults can drive go-karts high above the ocean (younger kids can ride as passengers). The line’s newest ship, the 3,099-passenger Norwegian Prima, debuting in Europe in August, has the world’s first three-level shipboard racetrack—plus two thrilling 10-story free-fall slides at Aqua Parks. Video arcades and interactive games also appeal to the family crowd. Norwegian’s Splash Academy (for ages 5-12) youth program entertains kids with creative play and games, while teens can also enjoy the ship’s virtual gaming complex, the Galaxy Pavilion. Norwegian Prima will be cruising from Port Canaveral (near Orlando), beginning in December. Seven-night western Caribbean sailings in winter 2023 from $849.
Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises’ affiliation with Discovery TV makes it an excellent choice for multigenerational families—especially in Alaska. Kids in Camp Discovery (ages 3-12) may participate in science challenges tied to programs such as MythBusters and Shark Week . Wearable OceanMedallion technology lets you locate the whereabouts of teens when they are not in their own beach club, and you can all gather for a virtual scavenger hunt or watch the latest movies on a big screen under the stars. Seven-night Discovery Princess sailings to Alaska this summer from $399.
Lindblad Expeditions
For multigenerational families who prefer a nature-focused, soft-adventure experience, Lindblad partners with National Geographic for a program that has kids collecting plankton, driving inflatable Zodiacs, and otherwise earning points to become a National Geographic Global Explorer. The program is available on cruises in the Galapagos, Alaska, Baja, Mexico, and Antarctica—all places you can spot wild creatures and the kids are encouraged to record sightings in a field book. Nine-night summer sailings in the Galapagos from $7,710.
The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection
On the luxury side, Ritz-Carlton’s first yacht , the all-suite Evrima , launches in late August with year-round signature Ritz Kids programming. Kids ages 4-12 get a dedicated space staffed by a full-time youth counselor. The creative program features an environmental element—kids may participate an upcycle art challenge or a water-sampling science experiment. Unlike the complimentary programs on mainstream lines, this one comes with an additional charge: $45 each for three-hour morning and afternoon sessions, and $65 for early-evening programming. Seven-night Caribbean sailings from San Juan from $4,900.

Choosing the Right Cruise for Your Family
Embarking on your best family cruise can be a thrilling adventure, filled with a myriad of activities, new destinations, and the chance to create lasting memories.
However, the key to unlocking this magical experience lies in choosing the right cruise that aligns with your family’s needs and desires. With an ocean of options available, making this choice can be as exciting as it is daunting.
Factors to Consider
Age of Children: The age of your children plays a crucial role in selecting a cruise. For families with young children, look for cruises offering extensive childcare facilities, kid-friendly pools, and age-appropriate entertainment. Teenagers might prefer ships with more adventurous activities, like rock climbing walls, surf simulators, or teen clubs.
Interests and Preferences: Every family is unique, and so are their interests. Whether your family loves nature, history, or just lounging by the pool, there’s a cruise that caters to these preferences. Identify what would make the vacation enjoyable for each member and choose accordingly.
Budget Considerations: Cruising can cater to a wide range of budgets. Decide upfront how much you’re willing to spend. Remember to consider not just the upfront cost of the cruise, but also additional expenses like shore excursions, onboard dining options, and gratuities.
Overview of Cruise Lines
Mainstream Cruise Lines: These are popular for their wide range of facilities and activities suitable for all ages. Lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian offer a balance of adult and kid-friendly entertainment, making them ideal for families.
Luxury Cruise Lines: For those seeking a more upscale experience, lines like Disney Cruise Line provide an unmatched level of service with a focus on family-friendly luxury. They often feature themed entertainment and special character interactions.
Specialty and Niche Cruises: If your family has specific interests, consider specialty cruises. From adventure cruises in Alaska to themed cruises centered around a hobby or interest, these offer a more tailored experience.
Tips for First-Time Family Cruisers
Choosing the Right Cabin: The right cabin can greatly enhance your best family cruise experience. Consider a balcony for extra space and scenic views, or adjoining cabins for larger families needing extra room and privacy.
Understanding the Itinerary: Scrutinize the itinerary to ensure it includes family-friendly ports and activities. Some cruises offer educational programs or special tours that might be of interest to your family.
Preparing for the Cruise Experience: If it’s your family’s first time cruising, prepare them for what to expect. Discuss the onboard activities, the structure of a typical day at sea, and the fun of exploring new ports.
Choosing the right cruise for your family is about finding the perfect balance between relaxation and adventure, luxury and budget, entertainment and education.
Involve the whole family in the decision-making process to ensure everyone’s expectations and desires are considered. With careful planning and a bit of research, your family cruise can turn into an unforgettable voyage of discovery and joy.

Planning and Budgeting
Determine Your Budget: Start by determining how much you can comfortably spend on your cruise vacation. This includes the cruise fare, travel to the port, and any additional expenses.
Understand What’s Included: Familiarize yourself with what’s included in your cruise fare. While most cruises include accommodations, basic meals, and certain activities, there might be additional costs for specialty dining, excursions, and onboard amenities.
Additional Expenses
Shore Excursions: Budget for shore excursions as these can be a significant additional cost depending on the activities chosen.
Onboard Spending: Allocate funds for onboard expenses like specialty dining, spa treatments, and souvenirs.
Travel Insurance: Consider the cost of travel insurance, which can provide peace of mind, especially when traveling with children.
Tips for Finding Deals and Discounts
Book Early or Last Minute: Booking well in advance or opting for last-minute deals can lead to significant savings.
Travel During Off-Peak Times: Consider cruising during the shoulder season or off-peak times when prices are generally lower.

Preparing for Your Cruise
Proper preparation is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable family cruise experience. This section covers essential tips on packing, documentation, and health and safety measures, helping you get ready for your sea adventure with confidence and ease.
Packing Tips for Family Cruising
Check the Cruise Line’s Guidelines: Each cruise line has its own guidelines for what to bring. Review these beforehand to avoid any surprises.
Essentials and Comforts: Pack essentials like medications, sunscreen, and swimsuits. Don’t forget comfort items for kids like favorite toys or bedtime stories.
Dress Code: Be aware of the cruise’s dress code, especially for formal nights or themed parties. Pack accordingly, but also remember to keep it comfortable and practical.
Space-Saving Techniques: Cabin space can be limited, so pack smart. Use space-saving techniques like rolling clothes or packing cubes.
Necessary Documentation
Passports and Visas: Ensure all family members have valid passports. Check if any of your destinations require visas.
Cruise Documents: Have all your cruise documents organized and easily accessible. This includes boarding passes, reservation confirmations, and excursion tickets.
Health and Travel Insurance Documents: Carry copies of your health and travel insurance policies.
Check-In Procedures
Online Check-In: Complete online check-ins to save time at the port. This often involves filling out necessary information and setting up onboard accounts.
Arrival Time: Plan to arrive at the port at the designated time, not too early or late, to ensure a smooth boarding process.
Health and Safety Measures
Vaccinations and Medications: Stay up-to-date with any required vaccinations and bring necessary medications.
Safety Drills: Participate in the mandatory safety drills on board. Make sure your children understand the importance of these drills.
Sanitation Practices: Practice good hygiene and make use of sanitizing stations around the ship to keep your family healthy.
Being well-prepared for your cruise can make a world of difference in your overall experience. From packing effectively to handling documentation and adhering to safety protocols, each step plays a crucial role in paving the way for a hassle-free and enjoyable family vacation.

The Best Cruises for Families
Many or all of the products on this page are from partners who compensate us when you click to or take an action on their website, but this does not influence our evaluations or ratings. Our opinions are our own.
Taking a cruise as a family is a great way to allow everyone to have a bit of freedom while maintaining togetherness, since everyone doesn’t need to be together 100% of the time.
Ships on any cruise line offer a variety of activities for almost every age group and a multitude of dining options for even the pickiest of palates. Also, many ships have places where kids can go and participate in activities or just hang out with other kids, allowing the adults some time alone.
When you’re seeking a cruise for your family, consider:
The itinerary: Does this cruise go where you want to go? Are shore excursions available that meet your family’s needs?
The cabin: Will everyone fit comfortably in the cabin you choose?
The activities: What types of activities are available for your kids? Are there places that are just for the adults?
The dining options: Are the types of foods available that your family likes? Can you eat when you want?
Keep in mind most cruise lines require children to be at least 6 months old at the time of sailing; however, the minimum is 1 year old for some sailings.
Since kids will often be separated from their parents, most cruise lines issue wristbands to children listing their muster station and other information so staff knows where to take them in case of a shipboard emergency.
Here’s a starting point to help you decide the best cruises for your family.
Disney Cruise Line: best overall cruise for families
The deck of the Disney Wonder. (Photo by Carissa Rawson)
When you think of family activities, Disney usually comes to mind. Disney Cruise Line has six ships, each painted in the red and black colors inspired by Mickey Mouse. Even the ship’s horn plays the first seven notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star.”
The ships bring a lot of the Disney experience on board with character interactions, immersive experiences and themes.
There are live shows for kids, fireworks, pools, splash pads, deck parties and more.
Some of the cabins are designed for families with a split bath-and-a-half design that includes a sink and bathing area in one room and a sink and toilet in another room.
Once the kids are on board, there are a variety of activities for them in Disney's Youth Clubs. These feature several distinct physical spaces and activities that are based on the child’s age and vary by ship.
The Oceaneer Club is for kids ages 3 to 10, and the experiences are different on each Disney ship.
Edge is for tweens ages 11 to 14 and is a hangout space offering age-specific activities.
Vibe is for teens 14 to 17 and has an exclusive physical space as well as activities like dance parties and karaoke.
The “it’s a small world” nursery is for the little ones 6 months to age 3. There is a fee for this service, and space is limited.
In-room babysitting isn't available.
Don’t worry, Disney ships aren't just about the kids. The ships have areas that are for adults only. Certain nightclubs and lounges are only for adults, as are some pools, the spa and at least one restaurant.

Royal Caribbean: best for kids
Royal Caribbean has 28 ships ranging in size from the smaller Rhapsody of the Seas, which holds 2,416 passengers on 12 decks, to the new Icon of the Seas, which can have 5,610 passengers on 20 decks. There really is a wide variety with something for everyone.
The ships are often colorful and are built for fun with all kinds of onboard activities like rock-climbing walls, surfing simulators, pools and splash pads, while the newer and bigger ships have water parks, indoor parks, ice rinks, bumper cars and more. Sometimes, you might even forget you’re on a ship and think you’re either at a resort or an amusement park. It’s fun to see the kids around the ship with their new friends enjoying activities like costume parades, scavenger hunts and more.
All ships have a variety of dining options, including a main dining room, specialty restaurants and other casual options for all kinds of diners.
Royal Caribbean’s Adventure Ocean kids club has a variety of activities, many with an adventure and science theme, making the vacation fun and educational. The program is divided by age. Aquanauts is for kids ages 3 to 5, Explorers is for kids 6 to 8, and Voyagers is for kids 9 to 12, and the activities and physical spaces are age-appropriate. There are also programs for tweens and teens with hangout spaces and arcades.
The Royal Babies & Tots program is for the younger set, ages 6 months to 3 years, and is on most ships. There is a cost for nursery services, and some even allow parents to drop off their kids outside of set program times.
For parents who want to get out and have some late-night fun, the Late Night Party Zone for kids and teens offers extended hours after 10 p.m. with special programming for a fee.
As for dining, Royal Caribbean offers My Family Time Dining for families with kids ages 3 to 11. This dining option plans that kids will finish their meal in 45 minutes. Then, staff from Adventure Ocean picks up the kids for evening activities, leaving the adults to linger over the rest of their meal.
Sometimes, the cruise line has a promotion where kids 12 and younger sail free.

Norwegian Cruise Line: also great
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has 19 ships divided among nine classes.
Many ships have waterslides, racetracks, laser tag, bowling, mini golf, splash pads and more. Youth programs offer age-appropriate activities on all ships except for the Norwegian Spirit, and the activities vary by ship. Youths are divided into two groups, based on age: Splash Academy is for ages 3 to 12 and Entourage is for teens 13 to 17.
Splash Academy has a variety of activities for kids, like creative play and games, that are offered only when the ship is at sea. Entourage has a hangout area and offers activities for teens that can take place around the ship. The area often becomes a teen dance club at night.
For the little ones, there is no set drop-off program. According to NCL, the Guppies Open Play area “offers a play space for parents to interact with their infants/ babies/toddlers 6 months to 3 years old and/or children in diapers.”
One-on-one babysitting isn't available. If parents want some late-night fun, group babysitting is available for a fee for kids ages 3 to 12.
On certain cruises, the third and fourth passengers in a cabin sail for free.

Carnival Cruise Line: also great
Carnival Cruise Line has 26 ships most have activities like sports zones, water parks, ropes courses and mini golf. A few ships have Bolt, a roller coaster that allows passengers to control how fast they go. All Carnival ships have a video arcade with a variety of games. Some of these activities are included in the fare, while others have an additional fee.
Carnival’s youth program is fleetwide and is divided into groups based on age ranging from 6 months to 17.
Turtles: The Turtles program is for kids 6 months to 2 years. A fee applies, and times vary.
Camp Ocean: Camp Ocean is for kids who are a little older and are further divided into three categories — Penguins for ages 2 to 5, Stingrays for ages 6 to 8 and Sharks for ages 9 to 11. Kids play together in organized age-appropriate activities and eat meals together.
Teen programs: Two programs are for tweens and teens. Circle “C” is for kids ages 12 to 14, and Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. The C in Circle “C” stands for cruise, chill and connect. Circle “C” is an onboard hangout place and activity space. Club O2 is a hangout place with teen activities like movies, video games and karaoke.
For adults who want time alone, the Night Owls program is for kids ages 6 months to 11 years. It is available each evening from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and there is an hourly charge per child. The Camp Ocean space takes on a slumber party feel with movies, arts and crafts, snacks and more.
One-on-one babysitting isn't available. As for dining, kids menus are offered in most dining venues on board.
MSC Cruises: best for European destinations
MSC Cruises has had a large presence in Europe for many years and is growing in North America and the Caribbean.
The fleet has 22 ships with European-inspired touches that travel to more than 200 destinations around the world. The line has won awards for family cruises.
Ships have water parks, 4D cinemas, arcades, bowling, simulators and more.
The kids clubs are divided by age, and care for babies and toddlers under 3 is included in the fare.
Mini Club is for ages 3 to 6, Junior Club is for ages 7 to 11, Young Club is for ages 12 to 14 and Teen Club is for ages 15 to 17. Activities range from sports and dance to video games, theme parties and more.
For dining, MSC ships have a variety of options for kids, including special menus, specific areas of the buffet with kid-friendly items, places where kids can eat with other kids, as well as “Happy Dinners,” where staffers will take kids to the kid clubs after they’re finished eating, allowing the adults to finish their meals at their leisure.
MSC sometimes has sales where kids sail free.
Celebrity, Holland America and Princess: best only for multi-generational trips
A shuffleboard court on the Holland America Koningsdam is about as exciting as the outdoor, ship features get. Kids, beware. (Photo by Sally French)
Other cruise lines like Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line and Princess are generally the best for kids unless they have, well, refined tastes. Those ships aren't as colorful or playful as other cruise lines' ships, and they lack amenities like waterslides, go-karts and roller coasters.
Still though, these lines can work for multigenerational family cruises because they often have programs targeted for mature passengers. You can often find things like lectures and card games. And still, they do have kids programs. Celebrity’s program is called Camp at Sea. Holland America’s is the Kids Club. The kids club on Princess is Camp Discovery.
The amount and frequency of activities can often depend on how many children are on each sailing.
