Alexi Murdoch (born December 27, 1973) is a British-born alternative rock and indie folk singer-songwriter and musician, hailing from London, UK.
Born in England’s capital city however raised in Greece until the age of 10, by the time he had moved back to Britain with his family (settling in Scotland), he had gained a wealth of life experience. In 1992 the singer-songwriter moved to the U.S. to study at Duke University, later moving to Los Angeles, California, U.S. to be with his girlfriend. Murdoch gained his first taste of exposure when popular radio DJ Nic Harcourt started playing his music on the radio station KCRW. Following interest from the L.A. music scene, Murdoch turned down advances from labels and began releasing music independently.
In 2002 Alexi Murdoch issued his debut EP “Four Songs” throughout independent record stores and on the online distributor CD Baby. The record became the site’s all-time highest-selling release, strongly aiding the singer’s popularity. By 2003 word had gotten around about Murdoch and he payed the year’s South by Southwest Festival and Sundance Film Festival. Following that, in 2004 the singer performed at the Hollywood Reporter/Billboard Film and TV Music Conference and became the most played artist on the Philadelphia indie station WXPN with his single “Orange Sky”.
Two years later in June 2006 Murdoch released his debut full-length album “Time Without Consequence”. The release proved popular among critics and became featured in a number of TV shows and films including “the sentiment-inspiring "The O.C.”, “Scrubs”, “Ugly Betty” and “Chuck”. In 2009 the singer released his sophomore album “Towards the Sun”, which once again received widespread critical acclaim. Following the release Murdoch embarked on a rare North American headlining tour as well as playing shows in Berlin, London, and Montreal.
Live reviews
If delicate, acoustic indie folk is your bag, you could do a lot worse than Alexi Murdoch; the Londoner - who now bases himself in Berlin - seems to have largely flown under the radar in his home country, and criminally so if you ask me. Perhaps its down to his less-than-impressive work ethic - just two full lengths since 2006 - but when they’re as good as his most recent effort, the haunting Towards the Sun, it shouldn’t really matter. Comparisons to Nick Drake are obvious and unavoidable, but frankly, it’s hard not to feel as if Murdoch has made his own lane; there’s such a clear emotive quality to his voice, highly poignant and evocative, that he doesn’t need to do much more than sing to create atmosphere. His last run of UK shows came in 2011, as part of a wider European tour; he played London, Brighton and two nights in Glasgow, with just his guitar for company, That, really, is the only way to see Murdoch play - you can’t help but feel it’d somehow take the edge off of his delivery if he was vying for prominence with the members of a full band - and it’s only a shame that his touring seems so infrequent; it’s for that reason, should he hit the road again, that you shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to catch him.

If there was ever an artist to swoon over, it would be Alexi Murdoch. With his guitar, bass vocals and mellow music, you can’t help but fall head over heels in love with his music. I saw him play a VERY intimate set at the Old Style Guitar Shop in Silverlake, California. He only played “Someday Soon” and “All My Days,” but damn did that performance leave an impression.
There were only about 50 people (if that) allowed in since it was a small building. Alexi sat on a stool with a microphone in front of him. All you needed to do was close your eyes and let the music take over you. His guitar melodies are methodic yet simple, his voice deep but beautiful. You escaped to a place of peace, guided by his music. Before he started his second song, he spoke a bit to introduce himself, and his mild manner matched the same tone as his music.
He is known for being fiercely independent with his music, making it a point to do things the way he wants it done. When you get to see him perform live, this all really makes sense. His music isn’t just anything, it’s an extension of himself and you can really tell why he is protective of it.
It is well known that to command an audience solo is a difficult feat for any artist, the further you ascend up stages the faster you seem to acquire a readymade accompanying band. However there are a number of musicians still confident enough to head out to the crowds with a guitar and a gentle lyrical voice, Alexi Murdoch is one of these people.
The English musician has currently released two albums to critical success and has been gradually breaking from beneath the radar with his delicate folk tones. The audience gathered tonight would consider the radar to be well and truly shattered to pieces as the musician entrances the entire room with hand selections from his two albums along with some earlier EP tracks which he holds in high acclaim. He thanks the patrons sincerely for coming out to support him, exaggerating the importance of the fanbase for new artists. The applause received are deafening and the musician looks genuinely moved as he leaves the stage.
