Safari/roof racks
- Add to quote
Years ago I recall seeing a concept jeep with a Safari rooftop rack that also held the spare. The rack was designed so that it could lift from the front and tilt back making it not only possible to lower the soft top, but also easier to get the tire up top. By chance, are there any aftermarket Safari racks that have such capability?

Expedition Rack, Jeep 97-06 TJ Wrangler (#34098) — Garvin Industries
I know there are racks that tilt, but sometime around the early 90s jeep put out a concept vehicle which (iirc) was a 4 door TJ with spare on the top and a rack that tilted/swung down low enough to attach/remove the tire (so one wouldn't need to lift it overhead). The vehicle also had spots on the side for shovel and other recovery gear.
I think this may be the vehicle I was remembering...but the rack didn't tilt and was actually part of hard top. https://www.allpar.com/threads/1997-jeep-dakar-concept-car-the-first-four-door-wrangler.228874/
I remember that Jeep now... I personally have never seen a rack like that. You may find this Thread informative.

Jeep Wrangler TJ Safari Roof Rack. * The original Safari Roof Rack is the perfect year-round roof top carrier for all of your gear, with a weight capacity of 400 lbs highway and 150 lbs off-road. * Though a permanent mount design, it still allows the removal of a hardtop without removing the rack.
Transform your Jeep’s roof into an extra storage space by installing this Surco Safari Roof Rack. This roof rack comes with a 5-inch deep basket that accommodates most heavy types of cargo. If you have several small to medium cargo to put on the rack, you can install its crossbars for better support.
