Tour de Bintan 2022

Description

International, prestigious cycling race ‘Tour de Bintan 2022’ which also celebrates its 10th year anniversary this year, finally is back in Bintan Regency of Riau Islands Province this weekend 14th to 16th October 2022, after its postponement due to Covid-19 pandemic situation. Similar with previous event, the race’s course will take place through the challenging but scenic road areas of Bintan Regency and Bintan Resorts as host of the venues. The two locations equally offer beautiful race course, tropical beach atmosphere along with warm welcome crowd of locals that surely provide both exciting race yet leisure for the participants.

This year, Tour de Bintan has been prepared in a relatively short of time. The first discussion with MetaSport as Event Organizer was initiated in June 2022 and followed up with official announcement by MetaSport itself in August, continued with opening of registration in September. The decision to make the event to happen has been done with careful assessment as the Covid-19 pandemic eventually gets better, following with the ease of some restrictions by Covid-19 Task Force that resulted into a decision to make Tour de Bintan to go ahead in October.

Participant’s enthusiasm was shown by their fast respond to register for the race through website’s platform of Tour de Bintan within only two months after the announcement was made by the organizer. A total of 515 cyclists registered up to 7th October 2022 as the closing date of registration. The final number shows that Indonesian nationality is among the 33 countries or nationalities participated at the upcoming event. It is such a pride to find out that Indonesian’s cyclists contribute 22% of total registration. Event organizer provides a few categories for racers to choose from, based on their capability: 138km Grand Fondo Classic, 82km Grand Fondo Challenge, 113km Grand Fondo Century or 52km Grand Fondo Discovery.

Tour de Bintan that will soon take place on this Friday, is the fourth year as a UCI Grand Fondo Series, where cyclists will put their best effort to be qualified as the top 20 percent in their respective age groups in the opening 17km Individual Time Trial on the Friday afternoon or in the epic 138km Grand Fondo Classic on Saturday morning, to secure a slot for the World Championship in Glasgow, Scotland in 2023. “The success to make Tour de Bintan to happen this year, is a proof on the preparedness and well collaboration by both Bintan Regency and Bintan Resorts, to set schedules and plans toward various sport tourism and international events in 2023,” said Group General Manager PT Bintan Resort Cakrawala, Abdul Wahab. PT Bintan Resort Cakrawala as the developer, operator and destination marketing of Bintan Resorts, is currently preparing various international scale of events to be carried out in 2023 such as Bintan Triathlon, Ironman Bintan, Bintan Marathon and others.

Tour de France stage 3 winner Girmay makes history

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

STORY: This is the moment Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay crossed the finish line at the end of the third stage of the Tour de France on Monday…

:: Turin, Italy

becoming the first Black African rider to win a stage in cycling’s most famous race.

Girmay's win for his Intermarche-Wanty team is something of a watershed moment for the sport.

Only two other African riders, both white – Robbie Hunter and Daryl Impey of South Africa – had previously won stages on the Tour.

Girmay, who was already the first Black African to win a grand tour stage at the 2022 Giro d'Italia, battled it out at the finish line to beat Colombian Fernando Gaviria and Belgian Arnaud de Lie, second and third respectively.

Richard Carapaz took the overall lead, becoming the first rider from Ecuador to wear the yellow jersey, which he snatched from the shoulders of Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar on added places without time differences.

The race will now head for the high mountains, notably climbing the lung-busting Col du Galibier, in Tuesday's fourth stage as the peloton enters France.

Tour de France results, standings after Stage 3

Sprinter Biniam Girmay made history as he emerged fastest from the peloton to win Stage 3 of the 2024 Tour de France and become the first Eritrean rider to win a stage in the race's 111-edition history.

The first flat stage of the Tour, Stage 3 provided somewhat of a reprieve from the relentless climbs of the first two stages . A more relaxed, tightly bunched peloton steadily moved along the 143.4-mile route from Plaisance to Turin, setting up the field’s strongest sprinters for a stage win.

Girmay of team Intermarché-Wanty surged to the front ahead of Fernando Gaviria and Arnaud De Lie in second and third place after a crash approximately 2km from the finish line compromised the position of a dozen riders, among them sprinter favorite Jasper Philipsen of team Alpecin-Deceuninck.

The stage was closely contested and the results saw the yellow jersey exchange hands, with Richard Carapaz of EF Education-EasyPost edging out Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates for the top spot in the general classification standings after the third day of racing.

Here's how the 2024 Tour de France classification looks after three days of riding.

Tour de Batam

tour de bintan 2022 results

The Tour de Batam emerges as a new cycling event on Batam Island, Indonesia right on Singapore’s doorstep. Organised by Metasport, the team behind the Tour de Bintan which was a UCI qualifier event since 2017.  Batam Island neighbours Bintan and has a worldclass course offering great racing, community engagement and hospitality.

The beautiful Indonesian island of Batam is easily accessible via Singapore on a 30-min ferry journey or via Jakarta and the organiser, MetaSport, provides hassle-free bike logistics. The centrestage of the event, Turi Beach by Nongsa Resorts, an international beach resort, allows for a well-deserved holiday following the ride” with “Host partner Nongsa Resorts offers various resort accommodation options including villas, bungalows and hotel rooms with beautiful beaches, pools (and pool bars!) allowing for a well-deserved break following the ride.

Over 45 different nationalities have taken part in the past including British, Australian, Singaporean, Indonesian, French, Japanese, and more flock to the island for the much anticipated event.

The event has an Individual Time Trial on Friday and a Gran Fondo Classic road race on Saturday, both being official qualifying races for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.

Besides the qualifying races, the event offers a 3-day stage race giving cyclists the opportunity to chase the yellow jersey. The two qualifying races are part of the 3-day stage race.

Shorter non-qualifying Gran Fondo distances are on offer to give newer cyclists the opportunity to experience the iconic Tour de Batam.

Batam-4

The time trial on Friday with a start and finish from Palm Spring Beach is on undulating roads varying from 2 to 59m above sea level.  The total elevation is 200m for a total distance of 15 kilometers.  The type of race an elevation can be compared to the individual time trial on Bintan Island from previous years.

The Gran Fondo on Saturday starts at Palm Spring Beach in Batam City for a 149km towards the southernmost point on the island to come back on the other side of the road for a sprint finish on Barelang Bridge which you already cross after 37km in the race.  The women do the same course but have their turning point after 83km in the race to have the same finish.

The race is quite hilly with lots of short steep climbs going from sea level to a maximum height of 60m above the sea, but the total elevation of 1300m at the end of the race will be challenging.

Situated 30 minutes ferry away from the modern and culturally vibrant city of Singapore, Batam is one of Indonesia’s enchanting Riau islands in the South China Sea. In recent years, Batam has emerged as a popular destination for visitors not only from Singapore and Malaysia but also in other countries in Asia and Europe. Their goals? Experiencing the first-class golf courses, water adventures,  shopping, rejuvenating spas and relaxing beach resorts, to the mouthwatering fresh seafood and delicacies.

This hidden gem with ivory beaches and lush forests is a well-kept secret resort destination for Singaporean residents, locals and expats alike.

The Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal (for Batam departures) is conveniently located just 10 minutes by taxi from Singapore’s Changi International Airport and 20 minutes from the Singapore city centre.

Another easy access to Batam island is via domestic flight from Jakarta, the Indonesian capital. 3 national airlines offer daily flights.

Dylan Groenewegen (right) sprints to the finish line on stage 6

The Tour de France 2024, the 111th edition of world’s most prestigious cycling race, is taking place from 29 June until 21 July.

All eyes are on the duel between Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark. The pair have won the last four titles between them with each aiming to win a third Tour de France.

It's the first edition beginning in Italy , marking 100 years since Ottavio Bottecchia became the first Italian winner of the Tour de France.

The 'Grand Départ' is in Florence with the field traversing the Italian Alps before crossing the border into France during Stage 4. This is also the first Tour to finish outside of Paris - due to its proximity to the Olympic Games - with the final stage an individual time trial from Monaco to Nice which will decide overall victory.

Monday 1 July: Stage 3 - Biniam Girmay makes history in Turin sprint

Eritrea's Biniam Girmay , already the first black African cyclist to win a stage at a Grand Tour, became the first black African to triumph on the Tour when he won a close sprint in Turin at the end of a flat 231km stage that began in Piacenza.

The sprint was without hot favourite Jasper Philipsen , the Belgian crashing with just over 2km to the finish. Philipsen was already without teammate Mathieu van der Poel, the victim of a puncture just minutes earlier.

In the end, Biniam outsprinted Colombia's Fernando Gaviria at the line to write more history for the African continent.

With the peloton finishing together, Richard Carapaz took the leader's yellow jersey from Tadej Pogacar on countback. It is the first time an Ecuadorian rider has worn the yellow jersey; Carapaz also becomes one of just three men taking part in this year's Tour to have worn the leader's jersey in all three Grand Tours, joining Primoz Roglic and Mark Cavendish .

Finishing the second stage in 14th place, two-time former champion Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) captured the yellow jersey based on count-back. French elections: Map of the first round's results

French voters returned to the polls on Sunday, June 30, three weeks after President Emmanuel Macron surprised the nation by calling snap elections following his side's defeat in the European elections .

Over two rounds of voting, with the second one taking place Sunday, July 7, voters are choosing the 577 members of the Assemblée Nationale. In the first round, the top two candidates in each constituency qualify for the second round. Any candidate who receives a number of votes equivalent to at least 12.5% of the registered voters in the constituency also qualifies, meaning there can be three- or even four-way second rounds.

A candidate who obtains 50% of the vote in the first round wins the seat, as long as the number of votes they receive is equivalent to at least 25% of registered voters in the constituency. In that case, there is no second round.

We have added the mention "Withdr." to candidates who qualified for the second round but have decided to withdraw. Many of them have done so to support a better-placed candidate, as part of a widespread effort from parties to beat the far right in as many districts as possible.

The 10th edition of Tour de Bintan started last Friday and it was undoubtedly a memorable one for all cyclists. The scenic routes lined with cheering local school children kept them going through the challenging uphills and winding turns.

More than 500 men and women signed up for the epic cycling weekend – some 50 percent were newcomers to the Tour de Bintan, and 34 percent of them enjoyed their first ever cycling event. Kudos to them for completing their first race! The event also continued to include the less competitive races, the Gran Fondo Challenge and the Gran Fondo Discovery. These are shorter versions of the main tour’s Stage 2 and Stage 3, and account for around 15 percent of the total participants.

It was a huge honour to have Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Trade and Industry Singapore, and Bapak Ansar Ahmad, Governor of Riau Islands grace the Tour de Bintan 2022. Racing individually against the clock, over 150 cyclists tackled the flat and fast course . The 17km event  also doubled as a qualifier for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships ITT, so coveted tickets to the finals in Glasgow, UK in August 2023, were up for grabs in addition to a string of yellow jerseys.

This year, there were 2 racers in the 70+ age category. Peter Taylor, who was awarded the yellow jersey, and  Anton Cheng. What an inspiration!

On the women’s side of the action, the ITT female winner was Ava Woo (Women’s Academy). The Singaporean recorded a time of 28:24, which was half a minute quicker than the next fastest girl, Jennifer Choi (BTCC). Third best overall and a further 22 seconds back was Faye Foo (Women’s Academy).

Greeted by the clear blue skies, our cyclists started warming up at Simpang Lagoi at 7:00am. There were food bazaars, club tents, and music creating a festive atmosphere for all.

The Indonesian Maritime Bintan Corp and marching band performed the national anthem and then it was time for the 138km Gran Fondo Classic. With the race doubling as a qualifier for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships road race in Glasgow, UK, in August 2023 the competitive vibes were high The men were split into a number of pelotons of various age groups, while the smaller women’s field started in one bunch.

Among the ladies, Faye Foo (Women’s Academy) emerged the fastest with an impressive time of 4:23:39. Our ITT female winner yesterday, Ava Woo (Women’s Academy) came in second place just half a second behind. The next fastest girl, Long Xin Cheong (Women’s Academy) was one tenth of a second further back. Faye Foo and Ava Woo retained their yellow jerseys for their respective age categories, while Long Xin Cheong celebrated a podium finish.

This year, there were a lot of first-timers joining the 82km Gran Fondo Challenge. The fastest man of the race was Almy Hanggara with a time of 2:20:00. Up next came Jecky Aswar Wahab and Nolan Ng (PCC), with only one-fifth of a second splitting them. The ladies did a fantastic job too! Shannon OConnell clinched first in 2:46:00. Sian Dunkley and Alethea Kerk were second and third respectively, only two seconds apart.

The day ended with a lively tour dinner at Grand Lagoi Hotel, where the prize presentation ceremony was held. It was lovely meeting all the participating teams and watching all the cyclists sharing their experience in Bintan.

Day 3 opened with cooler conditions, as the 113km Century departed Plaza Lagoi. The action kicked off quickly after the 4km neutralised start with Calvin Sim (Cycleworx) and Tong Khoon Fung (Singapore National Development Squad) making an early break as soon as the race was flagged off. They stayed off the front until the 108km mark, when on the last hilly stretch, they were caught by the fast-charging peloton. This chase group got an extra boost when the breakaway from peloton 2 bridged across and joined them. The big peloton competed for the win in a high-speed sprint with Yeo Boon Kiak (Singapore National Training Squad) scoring his third victory for the weekend.

The women’s race was one of attrition, with Jennifer Choi (BTCC, 35-39) taking top honours out of a group of five, beating four riders from the Women’s Academy. Ava Woo (Women’s Academy) took victory in the 19-34 category. The two Matadors Van Doug and Shirley Teo drove the win home in the 40-44 and 45-49 categories. Final honours for the women went to Gillian Li in the 50-54 category.

An enthusiastic group of Discovery riders also took to the roads, for a 55km non-competitive ride. Daniel Stokes (ANZA) pushed his wheel across the line first in a sprint with Jim Dela Cruz and Suwanda Almaja (Mighty Riders). Just like Saturday, the fastest woman was Shannon Oconnell, closely followed by Alethea Kerk and Sian Dunkley.

The 2022 Tour de Bintan concluded on a high with a prize presentation ceremony at Plaza Lagoi. The cyclists, with their families and friends, basked in their achievement of completing such a challenging event, as they enjoyed the friendly vibe that had hung throughout the epic weekend. With the prize presentations done, many of the cyclists were heading home with the coveted tickets to the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. However, there was still time for two more awards, those for the best overall women’s and men’s teams. Women’s Academy took that honour among the women, and the men’s team award went to the Specialized Dynasty Mavericks.

A big thank you to our event partners, sponsors, officials and volunteers who contributed to the event’s success over the weekend.

The Tour de Bintan will return for its 11th edition in 2023. After  such a fabulous race , it will be no surprise if many familiar faces return next year. See you then!

2024 French legislative elections: Results of the first round

French President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the National Assembly in June and called for snap legislative elections, with a first round of voting on June 30 and a second round on July 7. A total of 577 seats are up for grabs in the lower-house National Assembly, and France's next prime minister will likely come from the party or coalition winning the most seats.

Issued on: 27/06/2024 - 19:26 Modified: 01/07/2024 - 10:11

Marine Le Pen 's far-right National Rally party led France's snap parliamentary elections on Sunday with 33% of the vote, according to the interior ministry, with the leftist alliance New Popular Front following in second place at almost 28%. President Macron's ruling coalition trailed in third place with 20%.

Macron shocked France when he dissolved the National Assembly on June 9, hours after the far right significantly outperformed his centrist coalition in the European elections .

To see how the first round of the snap polls unfolded on Sunday, read FRANCE 24's liveblog .

The far-right National Rally party is estimated to win between 230 and 280 seats in the 577-seat National Assembly. The second-biggest group is projected to be the leftist New Popular Front with between 125 and 165 seats and President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Ensemble coalition at between 70 and 100 seats.

Tour de France: Tadej Pogačar moves into maillot jaune as Kévin Vauquelin solos to victory on stage 2

Vingegaard shows sparks of great form following his rival on the Côte de San Luca

Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) delivered back-to-back glorious breakaway days at the Tour de France for the home nation, in the Italian Grand Départ no less, netting the stage 2 victory to Bologna after attacking away solo from his fellow escapees on the famous San Luca climb with 14km to go.

The 23-year-old Frenchman powered away from Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility), who took second, and Nelson Oliveira (Movistar) after they all got into the day’s early break 190km from the finish, proving the strongest on the stunning 1.9km climb which averages over a 10% gradient.

The San Luca climb brought the best of Italian cycling to the biggest bike race on the planet, with a cacophony of noise welcoming both the day’s early breakaway and the peloton behind who were fighting for the yellow jersey.

As the GC fight unfolded some three minutes down, it was déjà vu from the 2023 edition as Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) exploded into life on the second ascent, forcing Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) into a response.

What the move did was answer all the questions posed in the cycling world from April when Vingegaard crashed at Itzulia Basque Country right to June 20 when he was announced on Vimsa’s Tour roster - would he be at his best?

The answer was a resounding yes, as Vingegaard was the only rider able to follow the superstar Slovenian in his brutal acceleration. Quickly, other GC hopefuls such as Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) - saw the two true best GC riders in the world move away.

Working together, Pogačar and Vingegaard navigated the descent back down to Emilia-Romagna’s capital to try and maximise their gains, as those behind struggled to put together a concerted chase with UAE and Visma teammates obviously not helping.

Evenepoel put in a stunning effort on the descent and flat run to the line to catch the top two finishers from the past three Tours de France, with Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) in his wheel, before sprinting to the line.

With the drama unfolding behind, Vauquelin rode to the finish with a 45-second gap at the crest of the climb enough to guarantee him victory. Staff waited nervously at the finish, breakaway companion and teammate Christián Rodríguez celebrated in front of TV cameras and Arkéa-B&B Hotels awaited their first-ever Tour de France stage victory after being founded in 2005.

Once the count was confirmed, Pogačar was confirmed as the new leader of the Tour de France , taking over from Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) who he dropped on San Luca, taking the yellow jersey for the first time since the 2022 race when Vingegaard dropped him on the Col du Granon.

“It was really hard for me but I’m really happy. I had a perfect day out in the breakaway. I have to thank Christian for his role in the way he helped me get through to win the stage. He put me in the perfect position and I knew I was going to be able to attack,” said Vauquelin after taking the biggest win of his career.

“Not until the last moment” did he dare to think he had it wrapped up “because I was constantly asking about time and what I could do.”

For a young Frenchman, even making his debut at the three-week race was a triumph. A stage win extended beyond his wildest dreams, another French fairytale in as many days at the Italian opener of the Tour de France,

“I wanted to take part in the Tour, that was the original dream,” he said. “To now win a stage in it, well that’s amazing and for the team as well - it just makes me incredibly happy.”

How it unfolded

Stage 2 got underway from Cesenatico, where homages were paid to the late Italian cycling legend Marco Pantani in his hometown. It was another hot day andthe seaside town had turned yellow 26 years on from their controversial hero ‘Il Pirata’ taking the Giro-Tour double in 1998.

Director of the Tour de France Christian Prudhomme waved the flag to get racing underway just after midday and it didn’t take long for Krists Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech) to take the initiative and attack.

Behind him was polka-dot jersey Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Mobility) who was very active for the second day running and his second launch off the front with 190km to go would form the day's move.

Joining the powerful Norwegian was Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ), Axel Laurance (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech), Nelson Oliveira (Movistar), Kévin Vauquelin, Christián Rodríguez (both Arkéa-B&B Hotels), Mike Teunisson (Intermarché-Wanty), Bram Welten (DSM-Firmenich PostNL), Harold Tejada (Astana Qazaqstan) and Jordan Jegat (TotalEnergies).

With tough winds in the Emilia Romagna plain, the DSM-Firmenich PostNL-led peloton didn’t give much chase in the opening flat 50 kilometres, allowing the big group to build an eight-minute advantage.

The gap to the leaders only started to go down to 6:30 over the Côte de Monticino and Côte de Gallisterna, with GC teams ensuring their positioning was optimal.

The action in the peloton was knocked off again as the peloton rode through the Imola race track. 2024  marks 30 years since motor racing lost the great Ayrton Senna at the  track, with the Tour honouring the Brazilian in its passing.

As they accelerated away from the Formula 1 arena inside the final 100km, all eyes turned to the intermediate sprint point in Dozza, where the bad luck continued for Visma-Lease a Bike.

Both Wout van Aert and Matteo Jorgenson went down with Laurens De Plus (Ineos Grenadiers) and sustained cuts and grazes but a thumbs up from the Belgian signalled that it was majorly superficial.

The pace behind had been upping until this point when the small crash saw the GC teams and anyone chasing stop their efforts. The gap to the breakaway ballooned back out to a new high of 9:22 with 60km remaining and the hardest climbs to come.

With the final climb approaching before the entrance onto the Bologna-San Luca circuit, the Côte de Montecalvo, the GC teams started getting nervous again, ensuring they were at the front of the peloton before heading down to the city.

The peloton sped up on the climb, reducing the gap to 6:00 from the leaders, knowing how important the first lap of the San Luca circuit would be to ensure their leaders didn’t lose any time.

Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny) led the way for Maxim Van Gils over the steep 3km climb, hoping to get the puncheur into the white jersey that he was wearing but not leading the classification for, but it was a curious move given how he was the only domestique helping with 40km to go.

More red and blue jerseys began to appear for Lotto-Dstny, as did Lidl-Trek and all the GC teams, with the narrow entrance onto the first ascent of San Luca approaching. The peloton crossed the finish line for the first time 4:17 down.

Incredible crowds welcomed the break on the first ascent and it was cagey until under-23 World Champion Laurance launched an explosive move.

Visma-Lease a Bike led the peloton further down the road and onto the lower slopes, with Van Aert and Tiesj Benoot doing the work on the front to protect Vingegaard. This is where the gap stabilised at 3:30.

The break came back together over the top of the climb to make it a group of 10 again on the first descent back down to Bologna which would be the decider for the stage victory later on but exploded when a Teunissen attack prompted Oliveira, Vauequelin and Abrahamsen to get away.

The trio fought out the final ascent to San Luca, with Vauquelin much too strong for his companions as would be the case for Pogačar and Vingegaard when they reached the second ascent in the GC group. The Frenchman would do on to take Arkéa's first Tour win.

Poor positioning at the base did for Roglič and Evenepoel who were put on a small gap. The Belgian managed to reduce this with Carapaz in his wheel on the run for home, but Roglič was resigned to finishing in the yellow jersey group with Bardet and his climbing domestiques.
