Endorsing an electronic pop, fused with ambience and melancholy are London Grammar, who formed in 2011 and have since achieved a platinum record certification by the British Phonographic Industry Association, for their debut, “If You Wait”.

Originally from London, singer Hannah Reid and guitarist, Dan Rothman met in the halls of the University of Nottingham. The two started to collaborate, and were joined by Dominic “Dot” Major, on keyboard, djembe and drums the following year.

Together, the band moved to the capital to pursue a career as a band. They gained management and promotion, building up their support playing gigs at bars, working on their material. It wasn’t long before A&Rs were knocking on their doors, and they were later signed to Ministry of Sound. In their early career, they collaborated with Rollo Armstrong from Faithless and Liam How from Sneaker Pimps. It was on December 12th 2012 that the trio uploaded “Hey Now” to YouTube receiving critical acclaim, and plenty of attention.

The single “Wasting My Young Years” in June 2013 saw the single rise to 31 on the UK Singles Chart, they also collaborated with Disclosure on the song “Help Me Lose My Mind”, which was released the same month. The album, “If You Wait” followed the released of their song “Strong”, which made it to number 16 on the UK Singles Chart. “If You Wait”, released on September 9th 2013, sold upwards of 33,000 units in its first week, and made it to number 2 in the UK and Australia.

They have had their music feature on the Dior advertisement, have played “Strong” and “Wasting My Younger Years” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon which was their debut on American television, and have won an Ivor Novello Award in the Best Song Musically and Lyrically category for “Strong”.

Live reviews

London Grammar - Hannah Reid is Sam Smith's female equivalent in terms of the BEST vocals in the UK right now. What a talented bunch they are. So another outstanding gig. It seems the music scene is pretty safe right now with a lot of super talented up and coming artists and bands. I think that i’ll begin with someone called Nick Mulvey. Well, what an amazingly talented guy he is. He came on stage as the second support act and the applause from the audience already gave us a clue that he was going to be good. I remember looking at the time and seeing that there was 45 minutes until London Grammar appeared and that I wouldn’t have minded one bit if he played for those 45 minutes. His passion and talent shine right through just by his voice alone, let alone his outstanding guitar playing. His band were also brilliant but I have to mention his double bass and bass guitar player. Another one whose skill and passion is shown through the way he played. If I had the opportunity to see Nick Mulvey again I would jump at the chance and dare you too also. Now onto London Grammar. A performance that left me speechless. Before they appeared, the crowd was already cheering and clapping and if that doesn’t create an atmosphere then I don’t know what does. The stunning vocals from Hannah Reid, awesome guitar playing from Dan Rothman and, one of the most skilled musicians I can think of; Dot Major all make up the lovely band. The piano playing, drum machine and the coolest drum solo all come from Dot which blew me away. Not forgetting that each member of London Grammar is insanely talented and, I’m pretty sure, have perfected what they do. I also have to mention the stunning light show that happened I think for every song. Out of the gigs I’ve been to, this one had the most incredible lighting. Their album is absolutely beautiful and although it’s impossible to pick a favourite, there’s one song that gets me every time and I almost shed a tear at the gig to ‘Sights’. It is the most beautiful and delicate song and speaks to me through the gorgeous chords used and I can’t put it into words how they do it, but it’s the chorus that gets me. There was a brilliant remix of a song they recorded with Disclosure ; ‘Help Me Lose My Mind’ which, I’m sure, put a smile on everyone’s faces. It seems that all the talent at the moment has occurred in the space of a year – Ella Eyre, Sam Smith, Gorgon City, Naughty Boy, just to mention a few. There were also about 6 violinists and cellists cleverly hidden away behind the band until they were needed, then a light shone on them and they owned the venue with the band. Overall it has to be the calmest gig I’ve ever been to and I thoroughly loved every minute of it and would do it again in the blink of an eye. Credit and thanks to London Grammar, Nick Mulvey and the rest of the musicians and crew. A lovely night and hope to see both of them again. By Amba Pattison

Perfect! They were perfect , I've been to many concerts before , but this is the first time i enjoy a live performance more then recorded songs ! It was such an amazing and emotional performance ! While waiting outside BIEL, I heard one of the staff who watched them training on stage earlier that day saying : " This is the first time i witness a voice that is better live than recorded !" And I couldn't wait to see it happen ! He was right , we could see it from the crowd singing with Hannah , she just closed her eyes and smiled ! It was one of the best moments ! I believe they enjoyed their performance in Beirut as much as we all did . Another amazing moment was when , I was standing right in front of Dan staring at him and his guitar for a while and smiling , and he looked at me for a few seconds then he smiled and continued performing ! I know he doesn't remember it , but it was magical ! I do appreciate artists down to earth !! I even had the chance to meet them backstage and give them portraits i've drawn , and I was extremely happy , they reacted amazingly to the drawings , it made me feel so special and lucky!

I did the impossible to go to that concert , That I will never ever forget ! The music , The voice and the lighting ! perfect ! everything was perfect and not even one mistake . They used lighting in such an amazing way , it went very well with the music , and one of the best performances was metal & dust ( though it's not my favorite song) but the way they played it with drums and passion and amazingly warm stunning performance made it one of my Favorites songs that night ! Thank you London Grammar , Radio One , Poliakov vodka and whoever made this concert possible , Not to forget the Lebanese Band : MASHROU' LEILA !! Proud to be lebanese , Maria , ...

London Grammar sounded better live than they do on their CD and they totally blew me away! I’ve had their album for a while and sort of casually listened to it but only really latched on to a few of their songs. However, seeing them live was a completely different experience and it’s made me go back and re-listen to the album with a new appreciation for the music.

The first thing that really rose the bar for me was how flawless Hannah’s voice sounded. Sometimes when you see an artist live, they sound pitchy or just not quite like they do on a CD after all the editing, but Hannah never hit a bum note. Her voice is so rich and inviting that I was mesmerized. Dot really impressed me as well with the range of instruments he plays from different drums to the keyboard and Dan’s guitar provided a strong base for all their songs. To really round out the sound, they also revealed, after a few songs, a small group of violinists that added immense depth to the entire musical balance.

But the music wasn’t just the amazing part. They also had a ridiculously amazing light show, which just immersed me further in the music, and I found myself just staring at the stage, captivated.

For those of you that are Disclosure fans don’t worry, because they also do a rendition of “Help Me Lose My Mind” in a slightly different style that was awesome. I loved all of it so much that I’ve already bought tickets to see them again this summer.

London Grammar, have risen from a small living room-music band to one of the most popular of this time. The show opened not with a lot of the glim&glam, but with the whisper of the first notes and than that deep awesome voice of hers. The show was perfect! You could feel the bass and music rushing through your veins. We didn’t get any of her covers, however, they played almost the whole album, which she did perfectly. She sings live even better than on CD. Some songs were shortened, on the other side, they made a great expansion of the intro’s. During the song ‘stay awake’ she had some gigs with the other band members. Result: laughing while singing. It was great to see that they amused themselves as well. The only downside was that it only lasted an hour, I could have listened to her all night! All in all, a great performance and I would really recommend it to all the London Grammar fans out there. As for the band; keep up the good work, waiting impatiently for more.

The old sandstone buildings and tiered lawns of the Arts Centre in Fremantle was the venue for the debut of London Grammar as headline acts. I must admit some trepidation as to whether the complexity of their sound and the power and delicacy of Hannahs voice would translate well to the live venue.

I needn't have worried as from the opening bars of rooting for you with Hannah soaring unaccompanied through occasional barrages of sound all with exceptional musicianship from Dan on guitar and Dom on everything else, this was a gig to remember. The light show though simple was used to perfection and at times was gentle, at others brutal but always effective.

They endeared with their lighthearted banter and will be craved for the impression they left this cool Saturday evening.

As I drove home listening to their cd, the music was still beautiful but now somehow unfulfilling after such a powerful performance and leaves me impatient for the next time they visit.

Awesome job guys.

London Grammar is a trio of artists. They create a sound between the melancholic and the obscure, which brings the soul in a magic, far away world. A world dominated and enchanted by Hannah's pure voice. An universe with Dot's and Dan's perfect sound as landscape too.

They make you forget all your troubles, or better they express your inner problems in a poetic and almost mystic way. They seemed to be an only person, who dominated the scene for almost a hour and a half. They did not stop.. In order not to stop the dream too.

The acoustic support perfectly embraced Hannah's capacities, the light system was simple and effective. All was connected in an equilibrate way to offer to the 4000 people unforgettable memories.

I have to say I almost cried during "Hell to the Liars" and touched heaven with the last but not least "Metal and Dust"... My life's song, now and forever.

I was very lucky to attend the London Grammar show at Roundchapel in Hackney-tickets were very sought after as this was an intimate show-an audience of around 425 people!!The venue could not have been more perfect for the type of music London Grammar excel at...beautifully crafted ambient ballads...and the fantastic vocals of Hannah Reid sounded strong and beautiful as they echoed around this church space. They played new songs from their upcoming album as well as old established favourites like If You Wait and Strong. The band had apparently rehearsed and recorded demo,s for their new album at the Roundchapel and they did seem very comfortable in their surroundings tonight....a night to be cherished/remembered for quite awhile9/10

Great gig! Preceded by Until The Ribbon Breaks who we'd not heard of before and loved, we were excited to see London Grammar live. Thrilled that the sound of the band really accurately represented the studio album, especially the vocals of Hannah which were divine - some of the most accomplished I've heard live. Can't wait to hear more from them in 2015 and hope they return to Toronto before too long to give me a taste of home!

AMAZING!! I love these guys!

The one thing I would recommend you improve is that your sound crew needs to well, be slightly better. Your must has a lot of depth and detail and the sound was not clear. The low frequency was overloaded and sometimes blurred in quality. Overpowering the vocals in many moments. The band has spent a long time adding detail to the songs and they are not coming through clearly

The venue was a great choice for starters. The gig...well, what can I say! I had high hopes and wasn't disappointed...what a band! Hannah, Dan and Dot were superb...the subtlety and blend of the music, and the versatility and strength of Hannah's voice makes for a fantastic combination. It's what makes them so unique and compelling. Lomg may it continue...best British band for a very long time!

London Grammar have  announced their biggest tour to date , as tickets for their UK arena tour go on sale next Friday . News of the shows arrives just days after the band closed Glastonbury Festival on Sunday night as they headlined The Park Stage to record crowd numbers - some of the biggest the stage has ever seen.

The UK arena tour will open this autumn and signifies the accumulation of over a decade of the band releasing music and will conclude in a career defining moment as they headline The O2 Arena in London on November 14 . The UK leg also includes shows at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow on November 11 and AO Arena in Manchester on November 12 , and will follow the EU leg of the arena tour which was also recently announced and is all-but sold out already.

London Grammar released their brand new single Into Gold last month, which is taken from their fourth studio album The Greatest Love , set for release on September 13 via Ministry of Sound . The new single encapsulates the spirit of the forthcoming studio album from the British group who now collectively find themselves at a point in their lives where retrospect offers the trio a capsule of reflective celebration. Having enjoyed over a decade of enormous success in the music industry, this is the sound of a band laying to rest the past and realising a newfound sense of freedom.

London Grammar recently performed their first live show back as part of Radio 1’s Big Weekend . Following their stand out Glastonbury headline set on Sunday, they are also set to headline Latitude Festival on July 27.

Lauren Mayberry will be supporting across all dates.

London Grammar: “Kids see right through something that’s not authentic”

  • Thu 19th September, 2024

After 15 years, LONDON GRAMMAR are stronger than ever.  ‘The Greatest Love’ proves it’s been worth the wait.

Words: Martyn Young.

London Grammar’s rise to become one of our biggest and most beloved bands is a testament to the enduring relationship and creative bond between three friends. They supported each other through a swift ascent before navigating those slightly awkward middle-period years, including the tumultuous pandemic uncertainty surrounding their third album, 2021’s ‘California Soil’.

In 2024, Hannah Reid, Dan Rothman, and Dominic “Dot” Major now find themselves refreshed and refocused on their career highlight, ‘The Greatest Love’, burnished with a telepathic understanding of each other and the enduring legacy of precisely what it means to be London Grammar.

“‘The Greatest Love’ feels like a celebration to me,” says Dot proudly. “There is a liberation that comes with having been involved in music for what feels like a long time now. I think we took risks in the process that we hadn’t before.”

london grammar tour usa

The album feels like the work of three people who have been through a lot together but are now at peace with who they are, allowing them to make their most creative and diverse work. “We’ve definitely grown up together,” explains Hannah. “We’re closer now than we ever have been before. I feel really lucky to have Dan and Dot in my life. We’ve supported each other through some real ups and downs of life.”

Dan acknowledges the rough times when the trio would sometimes second-guess themselves and who they were making music for in the years following their stunning debut with 2013’s ‘If You Wait’. “This has been a bumpy development path for all of us,” he explains. “I think we have each been up and down in our confidence and sense of ease in creative and performative settings.

“Strangely, it feels like we are slowly returning to where we were when we first met, which was largely more confident and comfortable with ourselves. I don’t think this is uncommon, and it’s something I’ve spoken about with other artists and musicians who have been working in music for the sort of time we have.”

“I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved as a band,” adds Hannah. “We’re not the kind of artists to crave the limelight. We’ve never been able to play any kind of game, and what we have over the course of these four records feels like a real musical journey. Each album is such a snapshot in time of what the three of us were going through and how we were working creatively. I think that’s what being a band really means.”

“I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved as a band” Hannah Reid

The feeling of what it means to be a band inspired them to work more quickly and instinctively than they ever have before, an impetus partly inspired by the flux of the pandemic years. “We finished the third album, and then it got delayed, and we couldn’t tour, so we just went straight into making the fourth album,” says Hannah. “There are songs that have been written in very different places. We’re much more self-sufficient, so I think it’s a bolder record because of that.”

The album encapsulates different facets of the London Grammar sound as the trio incorporate a wider electronic palette. “I have personally been listening to a lot of dark electronic and ambient music in the last couple of years, and I think that comes through in moments,” says Dot.

The musical sense of freedom is also mirrored in the physical freedom they enjoyed as they worked for the first time in their own studio. “That just felt private and exciting,” enthuses Dot. “There’s no time limit to the exploration you can achieve in there. No engineer that you are naturally conscious of not going too late with. We spent hours experimenting with freedom in the knowledge that we could throw things away too.”

The relaxed nature of the environment allowed the band to revel in gently shaking things up without losing any of the essence of London Grammar. “What seemed to emerge was an album made for songs that felt quite ambitious, varied, and unafraid to chase a sound or idea that was out of our usual space,” says Dan. “I think there is also a nostalgic sound to many of the songs from music in our childhoods, particularly music from the 90s.”

london grammar tour usa

“We’re much more self-sufficient, so I think it’s a bolder record because of that” Hannah Reid

While the music incorporated slightly different flavours, like the club-based opening banger ‘House’ or the warm, enveloping electronic rush of ‘You And I’, the essence of London Grammar that continues to tie everything together is Hannah Reid’s stunning vocals and her songwriting, which feels absolutely central to ‘The Greatest Love”s vivid and evocative imagery.

“I either have to be in a lot of pain to write some songs, or I have to be very relaxed,” reflects Hannah as she explains her songwriting process. “Some of the songs, like ‘The Greatest Love’ – that song came out of very pensive relaxation. It took me a year to write that song. It was going through my head. There are other times where I could be in a lot of pain about something, and I’ll purposely go and sit down at the piano and write a song about it because I have to get it out.”

“I think, lyrically, Hannah has written with a freedom on this record. It’s still dark, but there is a hopefulness and optimism in there too, and hopefully, the production really highlights that,” says Dot.

“I do think this record is more celebratory,” agrees Hannah. “It’s not morose; it’s more upbeat.”

The songs on this album all have a lyrical sharpness that makes them even more resonant. You can hear this in the striking single ‘Fakest Bitch’, a song that highlights the instinctive directness of the songs and their process.

“That was really fun writing that song,” smiles Hannah. “It’s probably the only song where we were all in the studio together, and it just came out. I think I wrote that song in half an hour. I had a set of specific images in my head that the lyrics were born out of.”

The songs on ‘The Greatest Love’ are written from the perspective of someone who has grown up and experienced the world in all its joy and pain. It’s not an album Hannah could have written when the band first found fame, when she was in her early twenties. ‘You and I’ is a centrepiece song that represents the maturity and empathy in her songwriting now.

“It’s directed towards a younger me,” explains Hannah. “It’s about letting go of old versions of yourself. There’s a line, ‘All this preaching – it’s never got me very far’, and that’s me being self-critical of myself in those moments. That is something I do through my art. It’s about self-reflection. Even on ‘Fakest Bitch’, I’m not a fake bitch, but everyone knows or has had someone in their life like that who has made them feel that way. But in writing that song, I reflected on parts of myself that I didn’t like. With ‘You and I’, it’s an open letter.”

london grammar tour usa

“It’s still dark, but there is a hopefulness and optimism in there too” Dot Major

Musically, the band met the challenge of complementing the depth and maturity of Hannah’s lyrics with a sound that was bigger and bolder, with ‘You and I’ building to a heart-stopping climax. “That is one that probably had the clearest sonic direction and was reaching ambitiously for a style reminiscent of pop records from the late-80s/early-90s, even records from the late-70s like Steely Dan,” says Dan. “The rhythm track is comprised of a live take between Dot on drums and Seth Tackaberry on bass guitar, which we recorded in a rehearsal room before departing on tour with Coldplay with our co-producer, Tim Bran. That became the centre point. We also recorded a children’s choir at a local music charity for the outro. There are also production flourishes by Jon Hoskins, which helped take it out of our comfort space.”

They knew that they were onto something special with this song and had to take the time necessary to get it right. “‘You And I’ took a long time to realise,” says Dot. “Hannah had written these incredibly immediate lyrics and a hook that just felt like it would work in a commercial space. Those songs can be the hardest to bring to life because you can almost be afraid of the commerciality in case you get it wrong. In the end, it’s quite a live recording. Hannah just feels like she is soaring over the top now, and it took a long time to get the rhythm right to give her vocal the freedom to really communicate with you. Dan was so instrumental in this track in really having the patience to get it right. It has such a nod sonically to so many of the iconic records from the late 20th century that we are all so in love with.”

Self-reflection, encouraging a newfound feeling of self-assurance, is a theme on the album as the band reflected on difficult professional and personal experiences to give them a renewed focus on the band and how to move forward. For Hannah, her diagnosis of the chronic pain condition fibromyalgia at the age of 24 is something she constantly manages, and as the band dealt with the professional uncertainty of trying to make, release, and tour an album during the pandemic, it conversely and fortuitously allowed Hannah the time to finally work on herself.

“I have it under control, so I’m a lot better at managing it than ever before, but it was worrying for a time,” she reflects. “I did think that maybe the band would come to an end because of it. When I first developed it, it was really severe. I’ve learned to control it. I developed it when I was 24, around the first album. We were quite seriously overworked as a band. We had only 10 days off in a row in two years. I developed it then, but I found the pandemic really helpful because it was like, I can’t go on tour, so I really worked on my health and discovered what my limitations were. It made me realise that I had been really overworking myself.”

The release of ‘Californian Soil’ in that strange period was a pivotal moment for the band. “It gave us an opportunity to really look within ourselves and make music. This is what being in a band is really about,” emphasises Hannah. “It’s not about being on tour, even though the live shows are great, and we really love our fans. If you don’t take care of yourself and if you’re not focusing on the music, then there is nothing. There’s no point in any of this. That reconfiguration was invaluable. Of course, it was a really hard time for the planet, and it wasn’t easy. We were worried that we weren’t going to have an audience at the other end of it. It was a second album going into a third album that felt like it was quite different from anything we’d done before. I felt like we got really lucky, and it connected and did alright.”

“We were like, ‘No, we really love this, and we’re going to do whatever we want'” Hannah Reid

Reinvigorated and refocused, London Grammar trusted their instincts despite some people around them having doubts. When you get 15 years into a career of working closely together, you know what’s right for your band. There’s strength in unity. “I think there are songs on here that some people around us just didn’t really like, and we were like, ‘No, we really love this, and we’re going to do whatever we want’,” says Hannah passionately. “You just have to do what feels right for you. That’s all you can do, really. I was surprised by how prolific we were. We have our own studio space now, and it feels a lot easier. We wrote a lot of material there, and we’re already thinking about album five.”

One of the different ways in which the band worked this time around was in how Hannah used her voice. Her vocals have established her as one of our finest performers of the last 20 years, but now older and with more experience, Hannah looked for new dynamic ways to harness that power. “I’ve really struggled with my voice over the years, partly due to my fibromyalgia,” she admits. “It takes away all your strength. If I feel like I’m having a flare-up, it feels like I lose all power in my voice. It’s really distressing. I think that’s the hardest thing I found about this album. Touring can do a lot of damage sometimes. I’m refining myself vocally, and I’m still working on that, to be honest. I try to take care of it now as if it were a person. I didn’t have that kind of connection with it when I was younger, but it does have emotion; it has a mind of its own, and if it’s feeling tired, I shouldn’t push it. If I’m hungry, it’s not going to perform in the way I want to.”

An enforced need to try to sing in a different way was ultimately beneficial in emphasising the stories and lyrics that are so pivotal on this album. “Sometimes I just can’t belt now,” says Hannah. “On ‘Fakest Bitch’, though, it’s not about that. It’s about the story you’re telling and the words.”

The collective desire to follow their vision has resulted in some of their best work, like the soaring and expansive title-track that closes the album and stands as one of their greatest achievements. They all immediately recognised the power of the song, but again, not everyone felt the same way. “Loads of people we were working with just didn’t like it. We were like, ‘Whaaat??? Why?!'” laughs Hannah. “We are quite sensitive, the three of us. That’s something that we share. I think now we’re better at just shutting the door and saying, ‘Here it is. This is what we love’. No one liked that song, and I think it’s amazing.”

One of the key lyrical passages in the title track ‘The Greatest Love’, as it swells to its stirring climax, is when Hannah sings, “I need you because you’re a woman. I’ll hate you because you’re a woman. I’ll love you because you are a woman.” It’s all extremely powerful stuff from a prominent woman in pop who has spoken so eloquently over the years of her own experiences of working within the music industry. Does she feel the environment is getting more welcoming for a wider array of strong, creative women?

“It feels different to me now because I’m older, and I think that helps,” she answers. “It’s a question that I’d be interested to ask younger female singers embarking on their career – whether or not they feel like something has changed? I feel like women have always been leading pop music. I do think it is different now when I think about the female icons I grew up with who were pushing the boundaries of pop culture. I would hope that it is easier now than it was for them when you think about people like Christina Aguilera, Madonna, Britney, and Beyoncé. This is where I’m really lucky to be in the place I am with Dan and Dot, as there is something about female creativity that certain men struggle to want to own.”

One thing Hannah does recognise that is different from when London Grammar first started out is that people are looking for different things from their pop artists. “I do think that kids nowadays want authenticity, and there is a change where kids are smarter than we were,” she says. “I just bought whatever manufactured stuff was shoved in my face. They see right through something that’s not authentic, which on a wider scale gives humanity a bit of hope.”

“We’re already thinking about album five” Hannah Reid

On some levels, it feels like London Grammar in 2024 have reached the ideal level of success in relation to fame. They can easily sell out arenas across the world and play any festival stage while maintaining the freedom to make creatively fulfilling art, free from some of the fan hysteria of the modern hyper-social age that people like Chappell Roan have spoken so passionately about.

“It hasn’t always felt like that,” admits Hannah, though. “I feel like that has been one of the biggest challenges I’ve had because our first record was so successful. There was always criticism where it was like we were always trying to match something. On our second album, to be honest, people were just waiting for it to fail. There was a lot of negativity. I do think that we’ve been quite strong internally to say, ‘No, this is what being in a band is. You’re never going to make those same songs again. We’ve changed so much as artists that you can’t recapture that, so you just have to move on’.”

There are multiple shows to play and stages to grace as the band look to bring the expansive sound of ‘The Greatest Love’ to their diverse and now substantial devoted audience. “We have a real cross-section,” smiles Hannah. “Something I really love is that the front rows of our gigs will have little kids, often with their dads, going to their first gig, and there will be a 7-year-old girl or boy obsessed with London Grammar. It’s just amazing. Then we’ll have much older audience members. The one thing our fans all have in common is that they really love music. It’s the emotion.”

Despite their individual projects, with Dot’s music on his own, Dan’s extensive production work, and Hannah’s burgeoning career as a visual artist, there is always the desire for the band to retreat within the strong cocoon of London Grammar, which the three members have forged over so many years. “We’re going to completely disappear behind the music. Album five is going to be the most unsellable, obscure record that we’ve ever made,” laughs Hannah. “That’s the goal, just completely mad. We’ll go and live on a farm for six months and make it. That’s the dream.”

Taken from the October 2024 issue of Dork. London Grammar’s album ‘The Greatest Love’ is out now.

Ministry Of Sound and Tap Music on London Grammar's most adventurous campaign yet

Ministry Of Sound and Tap Music on London Grammar's most adventurous campaign yet

Ministry Of Sound and Tap Music Management have offered a deep dive into a "new chapter" for London Grammar as the band release their fourth album.

Their first long-player since 2021's gold-selling Californian Soil, which has sales of 120,865, according to the Official Charts Company, The Greatest Love was unleashed to the public on Friday (September 13).

The group's singer Hannah Reid and guitarist Dan Rothman give  Music Week  readers a taste of what to expect from the new record in this month's  cover story , which also features  Ministry Of Sound’s Dipesh Parmar  and  Tap Music ’s Tony Beard and Liv Plunket.

Long-term A&R and current Columbia president Dipesh Parmar, who signed the band to Ministry Of Sound over a decade ago, liked what he heard right from the start of the the studio sessions.

“It never ceases to amaze me how creative they are, and Hannah’s songwriting and vocal still blow me away every time,” said Parmar, speaking in our  September issue . “She is world class and the whole record is an incredible listen. You And I and House both instantly felt like they would be drivers for this new record, even in the early stages. Into Gold is one of my favourites. I always want to allow them to feel they have enough space to develop ideas and evolve as artists.”

We want them to be as successful as possible and continue to be meaningful culturally as well as commercially Dipesh Parmar

Priming the LP to reach new audiences, Ministry Of Sound started the ground work early on by putting out The Remixes (9,417 sales, OCC) as a precursor in July 2023.

“We dropped The Remixes last year to warm up into their album campaign and keep their streaming audience engaged,” explained Parmar. “This featured the best of their remixes to date, plus two new collaborations with CamelPhat and SebastiAn to grow their dance-focused audience, which plays a big part in their journey.

"As ever, you want the album to open as many doors as possible. But like with every act we work with, we want them to be as successful as possible and continue to be meaningful culturally as well as commercially. They’ve always had something special about them. I’m excited to see what this album does.”

With The Greatest Love, London Grammar are seeking their third consecutive No.1 album (2017's Truth Is A Beautiful Thing also hit the top spot). But Parmar insisted that chart position is not the uppermost priority this time around.

“A No.1 album would be a great story to continue for the band,” he reflected. “But as long as they feel they have a creative outlet for their music that resonates both culturally and emotionally with their growing fanbase, that is probably most important.”

We all decided that being bold and making the leap to arenas across Europe was a risk we wanted to take Tony Beard

Looking back on the band's acclaimed headline performance on Glastonbury's Park Stage in June,  Tap Music's Beard  suggested the scale of the set had "suprised a few people in the industry".

“For a band who hadn’t played live for two years to walk onto that stage and see the crowd stretching up the hill was an incredible moment,” he said. “There was so much love in the field for them. Hannah wasn’t the only one with tears in her eyes.”

The trio performed their first live show for the campaign as part of Radio 1’s Big Weekend and are set to reach a new plateau with their  biggest tour to date  later this year, including their first European arena headline shows.

“The band have always had a solid live business but when we started on this campaign, we all decided that being bold and making the leap to arenas across Europe was a risk we wanted to take,” added Beard. “Not once did we doubt the ability to sell the tour out and we’re being vindicated as European fans have snapped up the tickets even quicker than we had hoped.”

Beard singled out Australia as “another strong arena-level market" for the band, who are represented by Wasserman Music, adding that the goal is to “make some big strides in other as yet untapped markets”, including South East Asia and South America.

“It feels like a new chapter for the band,” concluded Tap Music's Plunket. “Everyone says that with a new record, but it really feels like a gear change - hopefully the fans resonate with it and it reaches new audiences.”

London Grammar today return and announce the release of their highly anticipated fourth studio album The Greatest Love , set for September 2024 on Ministry of Sound . News of the brand new album arrives alongside first single House which is released today and is accompanied by the official video which you can watch here.

The Greatest Love follows the British trio’s critically acclaimed #1 selling album Californian Soil , which was released in 2021 and earned the band their second BRIT nomination for Best British Group. Arriving over a decade since the trio first entered the industry, the new album is a celebration; the sound of a band laying to rest the past and realising a newfound sense of freedom .

First single House embodies London Grammar’s new trajectory as frontwoman Hannah Reid delivers the uncompromising lyric: This is my place, my house, my rules. Speaking about the single Hannah said, “House is about drawing boundaries around yourself. When I hit my thirties, my mindset shifted, and I no longer felt like a victim of anything – it all felt within my power. I thought, making music should be fun, and we're gonna make that happen.”

Having first formed as teenagers at University, their seminal double-platinum selling debut If You Wait paved the way for what was to become a hugely successful career for the band, the rare longevity of which has firmly rooted London Grammar in British pop culture. Now over 10 years later, the band have sold more than 3 million albums world-wide, with two #1 selling records , 1 billion streams, an Ivor Novello and numerous BRIT Award nominations under their belts.

In 2021 London Grammar also completed their biggest UK tour date, with all 35,000 tickets selling out instantly in just one day. They also headlined All Points East and performed to over 700,000 fans on Coldplay’s stadium tour. The band have just been announced to headline Latitude Festival and the Glastonbury Festival Park Stage this summer.

Says Bruce Dickinson, “ Next year is a very special one for IRON MAIDEN and we’re going to be giving our fans a once-in-a-lifetime live experience. This is a tour that’s gonna put a smile on your face and a cheer in your throat. If you’ve seen us before, then get ready to take that experience to a whole new level. If you’ve never seen us before, then what the hell have you been waiting for? Now’s your chance to find out what you’ve been missing! IRON MAIDEN’s definitely gonna get ya!”

Manager Rod Smallwood adds, “50 years of Maiden and I have seen 46 of them! With well over 100 million albums sold and almost 2500 shows in 64 countries and counting, to countless millions of fans, we are all still loving every second and consider every tour a new challenge to bring something different and exciting to our fans. And for this very special one we’re pulling out all the stops!

We will cover classics and fan favourites from the first nine albums, from IRON MAIDEN to FEAR OF THE DARK, many of which we haven’t played in years and many we will likely never play again in the future. We have already been hard at work for months putting together an even more spectacular and elaborate new show which will bring the songs to life more than we have ever been able to do before. This is going to be a huge couple of years for IRON MAIDEN, and Eddie of course, and we are very excited about what we have up our sleeves for you fans throughout the whole of our 50th year. I promise you are all going to be very happy indeed!”

On Saturday June 28th the band will perform at the London Stadium, home of West Ham Football Club – the team that band founder Steve Harris has supported throughout his life, and with whom IRON MAIDEN have a long and storied history.

This concert in front of over 60,000 fans, will be the first time that IRON MAIDEN have performed on the club’s hallowed turf. A true homecoming show – with Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith & Nicko McBrain all born in the surrounding area – it will also be the biggest UK venue the band have ever headlined outside of their festival appearances.

Steve Harris says, “My love of football and my support of West Ham is no secret, and I know many of our fans around the world have shared that with me too. So we’re all very excited to be playing at the London Stadium as part of the RUN FOR YOUR LIVES tour. We can’t wait to see you all there!”
