Interactive world cruise map, home | cruise ships | port expenses | hints and tips, marmaris turkey cruise port guide.

Cruise ships dock at the ferry and cruise terminal of Marmaris, where there is a small square and the terminal building.

From here it is a pleasant walk around the yacht harbor and fancy shopping, all around a small citadel with many outdoor cafe's to the bazaar and center of the old town. (15 minutes)

Cruise ships often arrange shuttles into town, which also takes around 15 minutes, as they have to drive around the town.

The bay of Marmaris is a very protected natural port with deep draft piers for ships and several marinas for hundreds of yachts from all over the world. Be on deck when entering or leaving this port. The views are spectacular.

The Passenger Terminal is located at the end of the ferry Pier which offers all services for passengers such as WC, public telephone, tourism information desk, immigration, health, security and custom offices and well priced tax-free shops. As you will be x-rayed on entering this building this is a good time to stock up on alcoholic beverages, as you will not be checked again when boarding your ship.

There is a taxi stand right in the front of the Passenger Terminal Building.

Sightseeing:

Marmaris is one of the most attractive natural harbors backed by the rugged pine-clad mountains with an elegant palm lined promenade leading to a busy marina, splendid beaches and a crystal clear smooth sea which is ideal for water sports and sailing.

In the summer the town's population swells to around 200, 000, mostly package holiday-makers. In the winter it is much more laid back.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Note that catamarans to Rhodes do not operate from November to mid-April, and there are no Greek cargo boats.

If you have a whole day, you may take a boat trip to Turunc , a pretty fishing village, or to Paradise Island with the Blue Cave.

Cleopatra's Island , a 12 km minibus ride or a short boat trip from the town is famous for its clear water and powdery sand. bookable via a local operator at the port.

Marmaris has lots for families too. Great inexpensive boat excursions can take you out round the bay and to neighboring towns like Icmeler and Turunc with all inclusive food and drinks all day for as little as 25 TL. Marmaris also has two water parks.

It pays to compare your cruise line excursions : Tours etc. offered by GetYourGuide and by Viator .

Nearby Places:

Cruise ships and local tour operators offers tours to Knidos: ruins of Aphrodite.

The Dalyan river delta with nice beaches where you can spot turtles.

Kaunos with its ancient Lycian tombs cut into the cliff. Best to be seen from a boat.

Shopping and Food

The bazaar is large and primarily is filled with stores which sells fake "designer" goods, but in general of good to excellent quality.

The shopping center nearest to the cruise terminal is very upscale and pricey.

Traditional handicrafts such as carpets, copper goods, painted ceramics and jewelry are popular buys, along with a good selection of leather goods, sandals and beachwear are also in abundance.

In souvenir shops and stalls, it's always worth trying to do some serious haggling. For food shopping, local mini markets provide basic essentials, whilst the supermarkets found are similar to those we are used to at home.

Turkish food is amongst the best in the world. With enough climatic zones to grow most ingredients locally, there is a vast array of produce to excite and entice the palate. Besides its famous kebab dishes, there are many other traditional Turkish foods to choose from. Meze (appetizers) for which Turkey is justly famous, are a range of hundreds of small dishes from simple combinations such as cheese with melon to elaborately stuffed vegetables. These are served in all Turkish restaurants and are traditionally accompanied with Raki, a clear anise- flavored spirit claimed to be Turkey's national alcoholic drink

Turkey's currency is the Turkish Lira. Many shops and restaurants in the coastal resorts and big cities accept payment in foreign currency. But if you are planning to travel to other parts of the country, it is advisable to take some Turkish Lira with you. With a credit or debit card you can withdraw local currency from cash machines which are found everywhere.

Currency Converter

Communication:

Free WiFi is available at the cruise/ferry terminal.

Free wireless connections are available at restaurants/cafés.

Emergency Ambulance: 112 (all over Turkey) Police: 155 (all over Turkey)

Opening Hours and Holidays:

In tourist and coastal areas, opening hours are quite flexible and during the summer many shops stay open until late in the evening, seven days a week, leaving tourists to browse at their leisure and escape the heat of the day.

Cruises from/to Marmaris, Turkey

Marmaris, turkey cruise port.

  • Just because it's a resort area doesn't mean you can't learn something. The Marmaris Museum provides excellent views of the sea and marina, where this castle once served as a military base. Originally built by Süleyman the Magnificent (the longest-reigning Great Sultan of the Ottoman Empire), you can see artefacts including figurines, oil lamps, and tombstones.
  • While this is a bustling town center by day with plenty of shopping and dining, if you're around after dark, check out the Dancing Fountains. Fun for both adults and kids, the fountains are lit with a rainbow of colors and the streams move in time to music.
  • If you're in the mood to get away from the crowds and get in touch with nature, the Marmaris Mountains can be explored by foot or car. The multiple viewpoints from the mountain peaks are beyond breathtaking.
  • While there are plenty of beaches closer to the downtown area, Icmeler Beach on nearby Cleopatra Island is rumored to have some of the best sand in the world. With crystal clear, warm waters, it's also a quieter area than Marmaris Beach (if quiet is what you're after).

A view of the landscape of Port Marmaris Turkey

Marmaris, Turkey

Marmaris, on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, is a popular international sailing port and busy all-inclusive-holiday destination for northern Europeans. Once a sleepy fishing village, the town transformed into a tourism hotspot in the 1980s, catering to everyone from backpackers and resort lovers to families and hedonistic partygoers. Its influx of foreign guests means Turkish culture can get somewhat lost, though a stopover will introduce you to the history, people, landscape and unique ecosystem of the area. The first sight on arrival is the town’s natural harbor, lined by the mountainous Marmaris National Park. It’s this landscape and proximity to the Aegean and Mediterranean seas that sustained the town as an ancient trading port and safe haven for history’s greatest armies, including those of Alexander the Great and Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. Once docked at the cruise terminal, walk to the old town where you’ll find the Grand Bazaar, Marmaris Museum and most restaurants lined up by the superyachts and Turkish gulets (wooden sailboats) of the encircling marina. Sunbeds by the beach are within walking distance, though the more attractive Içmeler Beach is just a quick trip by taxi or public bus.

Adventure Cruises in Marmaris

Marmaris cruises are at the heart of cruising the idyllic waters of Turkey ’s Mediterranean coast. The town is considered one of the hearts of cruising in the area, and adventure cruises to Marmaris are a must if you are considering any cruise in Turkish waters. With a long history and beautiful landscapes, there is plenty to do aside from cruising the turquoise Mediterranean water. Whether you are exploring the ancient Ruins of Kaunos, cruising along the Daylan River, Exploring the Datca Peninsula by car, or even scuba diving in ruins in Marmaris Bay, there is an activity for everyone to enjoy on a trip to Marmaris.

Top Things to Do in Marmaris

You are spoiled for choice in Marmaris. Whatever you taste, there is something for you, from great dining and nature to beautiful waters and ancient history stretching back a mind-boggling 12,000 years. The highlights of things to do in Marmaris include:

Lying across the Dalyan River from Dalyan town, the ruins of the Carian city of Kaunos are well worth a visit if you want to delve into a bit of history. The city dates back to the 9th century BC, although it was at its peak around 400 BC. A vital trading port, the town had links across the Mediterranean; however, due to its ports becoming silted up, the city started to go into decline, finally being abandoned in the 15th century.

Marmaris National Park is well worth a journey. While the stunning rocky coastline is often experienced from the sea, it is well worth taking a trip inland to explore this area of spectacular flora and fauna. Visiting the peninsula called Yildiz Adası (paradise island) provides some stunning views, especially great panoramas of hills and sea. Heading deep into the park, you will find the Nimara Caves, where evidence of human habitation has been found as far, stretching back 12,000 years. Those interested in animal life should keep an eye out for eagles and falcons who spend their days on the warm air currents.

Explore the Datca Peninsulas by driving along the coast road. You can explore the very picturesque Datca and Bozburun peninsulas. The scenic drive takes in some great views and explores some old villages with cobbled streets and whitewashed stone walls. You can also experience some history here, exploring the ancient ruins of Knidos, with its temple and large theatre facing the shore.

If you are scuba certified, a dip below the waves in Marmaris is well worth your while. Marmaris Bay is home to 50 dive sites. Being in the Aegean, there are no coral reefs. However, there are tons of ancient ruins to explore and some great marine life. Sites worth exploring include Galleon Cove, Aksu Cove, and Ince Cape, with some featuring lots of ancient Amphorae scattered on the bottom. While diving, keep an eye out for the loggerhead turtles, which frequent the area and are a sight to behold underwater.

Top Tips for visiting Marmaris (only if tips are applicable)

Depending on your activities, there are lots of things that are recommended to bring along. Suppose you are planning on doing some exploring on land. In that case, a good pair of hiking trainers or walking boots are the perfect companion for the usual sunscreen and a hat, especially if visiting in the summer.

If you plan to scuba dive on your Marmaris cruise, it is worth bringing your dive gear. While you can rent dive gear, it is often expensive, so it is advisable to bring your own set. If you can’t bring your gear due to weight restrictions, make sure to bring your dive computer and mask at a minimum.

Whether you are diving or trekking around Marmaris's sites, it is easy to get dehydrated, especially at the height of summer. A small, insulated portable water bottle is the perfect companion for staying cool and hydrated during your trip to Marmaris.

Best time to cruise Marmaris

Although Marmaris has excellent weather year-round, especially compared to some northern hemisphere countries, the best time to visit is spring through early fall. While trips from March to October are possible, the warmest time of year is July and August, when the weather is at its hottest, averaging 33C/91F, but the sailing conditions are at their best well.

This peak season means higher prices and more crowds, so if you prefer to go on holiday when things are a little less busy and a little less hot. April and May and September and early October are a great compromise. You still have great sunny weather, prices are a little lower, the sailing conditions are still excellent, and the tourist hotspots are a little less busy.

Where do Marmaris cruises depart from?

Marmaris is one of the main ports serving cruises on the Turkish Mediterranean coast. Several of the biggest companies are headquartered in Marmaris, and the port is their home base and a departure point to explore many other destinations. However, some companies in Fethiye and Gocek will run cruises that take in Marmaris as part of their itineraries. Marmaris is mainly served by Dalaman Airport, about a 90-minute drive away. You can also get to Marmaris from Bodrum airport; however, that is a longer 2-hour drive.

Getting to Dalman or Bodrum airports is relatively straightforward. Both locations are some of the main tourist destinations in Europe, so you will find lots of flights from different European cities. If you are flying from further afield, you will need to connect at a major European hub or in Istanbul.

Passengers on 3-year cruise speak out as ship remains stuck in harbor

The Villa Vie Odyssey is now three months past its original launch date.

Passengers planning to travel the world on a three-year cruise are speaking out as they remain stuck on land, waiting for their ship to depart.

Holly Hennessy said she has been stuck in Belfast, Ireland, for three months as she and her fellow passengers wait for the cruise ship, the Villa Vie Odyssey, to be repaired.

"It's cold. It's windy. It's damp. It usually rains," Hennessy told " Good Morning America ," describing the past three months in Belfast. "I've been moved five times to different accommodations."

Johan Bodin and his partner Lanette Canen have spent the past three months traveling around Europe as they wait for the ship to depart from Belfast. The couple relocated from Maui, Hawaii, to spend the next several years on the Villa Vie Odyssey, according to their website, where they post travel content.

"We intend to stay on for a long haul, but who knows how we feel after a year," Bodin told "GMA."

Bodin and other passengers on the Villa Vie Odyssey, operated by Villa Vie Residences, have been waiting since May for the cruise to depart.

Mikael Petterson, the founder and CEO of Villa Vie Residences, told "GMA" the Villa Vie Odyssey is a 30-year-old ship. He said the ship made the trip to Belfast on its own power before other maintenance issues were discovered.

"The rudder stocks took six weeks to get done, and now we're dealing with a couple of other things," Petterson said. "But overall, I think three months is actually not that bad given the circumstances."

What is a crew appreciation fee? Why 1 major cruise line is raising the price

Petterson added that the ship's repairs are in their final stages, and said he expects the ship to depart the week of Sept. 9.

The cruise is advertised to visit 475 destinations in 147 countries. The price to purchase an all-inclusive cabin starts at around $100,000, with an additional monthly fee for at least 15 years.

While the Villa Vie Odyssey has been out of commission, passengers are allowed on the ship during the day but cannot stay overnight, staying in hotel rooms in Belfast instead.

Passengers on a round-the-world cruise now stuck at port have to get off every evening and stay at hotels while the cruise company tries to 'reactivate' the vessel

  • Villa Vie Residences' Odyssey cruise ship was set to embark on a round-the-world voyage in May.
  • But the vessel has been undergoing repair work at a shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
  • Villa Vie Residences said the ship could start sailing again this week.

Insider Today

Passengers looking to embark on a 3 ½-year round-the-world voyage on Villa Vie Residences' Odyssey cruise ship have been left hanging for the past three months.

In December, the company announced it had bought Fred Olsen Cruise Lines' Braemar vessel, which it later named Odyssey.

The ship, which is more than 30 years old, was meant to set sail in May.

On the planned 1301-day journey, the cruise liner is set to visit 147 countries across seven continents, including destinations such as France, Mexico, and Japan, according to Villa Vie Residences' itinerary.

But mechanical problems have left the Odyssey stuck in Belfast, Northern Ireland , instead.

Sebastian Stokkendal, a marketing manager for Villa Vie Residences, told the Associated Press that the company was "humbled by the scale of what it takes to reactivate a 30-year-old vessel from a four-year layup."

According to a Villa Vie Residences' webpage on the Odyssey, the cruise ship was lengthened in 2009 and refurbished in 2019.

The vessel is now docked at Belfast's Harland & Wolff shipyard, which is best known for being where the ill-fated Titanic ocean liner , was built.

The need for repairs means the Odyssey's passengers have also been stuck in Belfast.

The AP reported that roughly 200 passengers had been residing in the city, with Villa Vie Residences paying for their living expenses.

Related stories

Notably, passengers are allowed to stay on the ship during the day but have to disembark every evening, and the AP reported that they could spend the night at hotels in Belfast or other European cities.

"We can spend all day aboard the ship, and they provide shuttle buses to get on and off," a passenger, Holly Hennessey, told the BBC in a report published Wednesday.

"We can have all of our meals, and they even have movies and trivia entertainment, almost like cruising except we're at the dock," she added.

Villa Vie Residences Mikael Petterson said in an earlier email to Business Insider on Thursday that passengers were offered hotel stays, other cruises, shore excursions, and trips to Spain, Liverpool, and Amsterdam.

Stokkendal told the AP that the Odyssey could set sail soon once the repair work on its rudder shafts, steel work, and engine overhauls was completed.

"We expect a very anticipated successful launch next week where we will head to Bremerhaven, Amsterdam, Lisbon, then across the Atlantic for our Caribbean segment," Stokkendal said.

Representatives for Villa Vie Residences didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.
