Seven-Star Hotels—Are They Real?

7 star travel

Luxury travel is endlessly fascinating—sort of like window shopping.

Every year, more lux and semi-lux experiences come into orbit for the average traveler. So far in 2024, I’ve noticed things like semi-affordable semi-private airlines take off, a proliferation of private castle rentals , and brand-new, high-end glamping brands hit the market.

That being said, the bar for extravagance is continually rising.

And one of the latest iterations of luxury travel is the emergence of the seven-star hotel.

Is it real or a thing of myth? And how exactly do seven-star hotels compare to their counterparts?

Let’s dive into the mythical world of seven-star hotels, starting off with what defines these larger-than-life stays.

What differentiates seven-star hotels from five-star hotels?

Here’s the hard truth—most travel and hospitality experts don’t believe that seven-star hotels exist. That’s based on the fact that typical star allocations in the hotel world follow strict criteria.

In other words, there’s no seven-star category because the Powers That Be haven’t yet laid out the official requirements of a seven-star stay.

Also, it bears mentioning that star ratings are reviewed by different agencies across the world. A five-star stay in one place might not look the same in another.

And the criteria for hotel ratings are quantitative instead of qualitative. It’s based on the number of features—not whether or not they offer a high-quality experience.

That means that you can find four-star hotels that are wildly luxurious and endlessly re-bookable. They outperform their five-star friends even though they have one less star… which might be due to the fact that they don’t have a pool, for example.

On top of that, true luxury knows no star system. To put it bluntly, some of the best and most exclusive hospitality experiences aren’t listed online. The finer things in life are on a need-to-know basis—and the right people usually know where to find them.

So, the question is—if five-star ratings can still be subjective, then do seven-star hotels actually exist?

Do they actually exist?

Star rating systems are feature-driven, which means that, technically speaking, seven-star hotels don’t exist.

Still, I do think that some hotels offer an experience that’s a step above a standard five-star stay—and it’s only a matter of time before the entities in charge of hotel star ratings catch on.

Examples of seven-star hotels and the seven-star experience

Let’s pretend seven-star hotels officially exist. What sorts of next-level amenities do they offer?

The term first emerged as a superlative to describe the Burj Al Arab —the UAE’s iconic luxury hotel that opened back in 1999. Thanks to its more insane features—like private submarine travel and copious amounts of gold décor—it looked like the hotel was ushered in a new, gilded era in hospitality.

But with no official seven-star hotel rating, the Burj Al Arab is officially still in five-star territory.

Around 25 years after its opening, the travel world is still contending with the concept of what defines a seven-star stay.

Generally speaking, these are the elements that differentiate a seven-star stay:

  • Larger rooms and greater variation in room type
  • Catered and highly personalized service
  • Privacy—from butlers to pools
  • Fantastic views of unspoiled areas
  • The highest-end products, brands, and materials on the market

And here are hotels around the world that use the term ‘seven-star’ to describe their services:

  • Burj Al Arab, Dubai
  • Signiel Seoul, Seoul
  • TownHouse Galleria, Milan

What Is A 7 Star Hotel? The Ultimate Guide To Luxury Hospitality

In the world of luxury travel, the term ‘7 star hotel’ is often whispered with a sense of awe and exclusivity. These ultra-luxurious establishments are the epitome of opulence, offering guests an unparalleled level of service, amenities, and indulgence.

If you’re short on time, here’s a quick answer to your question: A 7 star hotel is an informal rating that represents the highest level of luxury, service, and amenities in the hospitality industry. These hotels offer exceptional accommodations, personalized service, and lavish experiences that go beyond the traditional 5-star rating system.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the world of 7 star hotels, exploring their defining characteristics, the services and amenities they offer, and the exclusive experiences that set them apart from their 5-star counterparts.

Whether you’re a luxury traveler seeking the ultimate indulgence or simply curious about the pinnacle of hospitality, this article will provide you with a detailed understanding of what it means to be a 7 star hotel.

The Origins of the 7 Star Rating

The evolution of hotel rating systems.

Hotel rating systems have been around for decades, providing travelers with a standardized way to assess the quality and amenities of accommodations. The traditional star rating system, which ranges from one to five stars, was initially introduced in the 1950s by the Mobil Travel Guide.

Over time, this system has become widely adopted by various organizations and travel platforms, including Forbes Travel Guide and AAA Diamond Ratings .

While the five-star rating is considered the pinnacle of luxury and service, some hoteliers and travel experts recognized the need for an even higher designation to distinguish truly exceptional properties.

This led to the emergence of the unofficial “7 Star” rating, a term that has become synonymous with ultra-luxury hospitality.

The Unofficial 7 Star Designation

The concept of a 7 Star hotel rating is not officially recognized by any major rating organization. Instead, it has become a marketing term used by a handful of properties to showcase their unparalleled opulence, exclusivity, and attention to detail.

These hotels often boast extravagant amenities, such as private butlers, lavish suites, and state-of-the-art facilities that redefine the boundaries of luxury.

While there is no definitive criteria for earning a 7 Star rating, these properties typically offer an unmatched level of personalized service, privacy, and indulgence. They cater to the most discerning travelers who seek the ultimate in luxury and exclusivity.

According to a study by Luxury Hospitality Management, only a handful of hotels worldwide claim the 7 Star designation, with properties like Burj Al Arab in Dubai and Pangu 7 Star Hotel in Beijing leading the way.

Pioneers of Ultra-Luxury Hospitality

The pursuit of ultra-luxury hospitality can be traced back to the early 20th century, when iconic hotels like the Ritz Paris and The Plaza in New York set the standard for opulent accommodations. However, it wasn’t until the late 20th and early 21st centuries that a new breed of hotels emerged, redefining the boundaries of luxury and pushing the limits of what was once considered the pinnacle of hospitality.

Properties like the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, which opened in 1999, quickly became synonymous with the 7 Star concept. With its iconic sail-shaped design, lavish suites, and over-the-top amenities like a fleet of Rolls-Royce cars and a helipad, the Burj Al Arab set a new standard for ultra-luxury hospitality that few have been able to match.

Other pioneers in this realm include the Pangu 7 Star Hotel in Beijing, which boasts a striking modern design and a focus on cutting-edge technology and sustainability.

While the 7 Star rating may not be officially recognized, it has undoubtedly captured the imagination of luxury travelers and hoteliers alike. As the demand for ultra-luxury experiences continues to grow, we can expect to see more properties pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of hospitality, offering unparalleled levels of indulgence and exclusivity that redefine the very notion of luxury.

For instance, the iconic Burj Al Arab in Dubai, often regarded as the world’s first 7-star hotel, offers the Luxury Leisure Escape package starting at a cool $2,500 per night. This includes a stay in a sumptuous suite, daily breakfast, private beach access, and a dedicated butler service.

Membership Programs and Exclusive Access

Beyond the luxurious accommodations, many 7-star hotels offer exclusive membership programs that grant privileged access to their elite clientele. These programs often come with hefty initiation fees and annual dues, but they provide a host of benefits, including priority booking, complimentary upgrades, and access to private clubs and amenities.

For example, the Ritz-Carlton hotel chain offers the Ritz-Carlton Rewards program, which allows members to earn points and redeem them for free nights, upgrades, and other perks. Similarly, the Marriott Bonvoy program encompasses many of Marriott’s luxury brands, including The Ritz-Carlton , St.

The Pursuit of Exclusivity and Privacy

One of the hallmarks of 7-star hotels is their unwavering commitment to providing guests with unparalleled privacy and exclusivity. These properties often boast secluded locations, private beaches, and discreet entrances to ensure the utmost discretion for their high-profile clientele.

Many even go so far as to offer private residences or villas, catering to those seeking the ultimate in seclusion and luxury.

  • 17 Epic 7 Star Hotels In The World That Make For An Experience Like Never Before In 2024!

We’ve grown up understanding that when it comes to stars, it’s more is the merrier, and the 7 star hotels in the world further reinforces this theory. These hotels not only reflect timeless luxury and class but also boast of elegantly designed exteriors against expansive backdrops in a way that makes them so extraordinary. The hotels that are starred seven have plenty to offer. A stay at these palace-like hotels is an experience that one tends to cherish forever.

However, a 7 star rating is more of a fantastic standard than an official one. It became a trend after a journalist attended the opening of Burj-Al-Arab in Dubai and thought a mere 5 star rating don’t do justice to it’s grandeur.

But before everything else, let’s find out:

About A ‘7-Star’ Hotel

While there isn’t any international standard of ratings for describing what lets a hotel earn the stars for the kind of comfort, luxury, and hospitality it offers, some countries follow their own criteria, whereas a few others stick to a mutually standardized classification at regional level (But, some hotels prefer rating them themselves). With all of this, it’s only confusing to understand which are the best 7-Star hotels in the world ?

7 Star Hotels: Do They Really Exist?

By Thom Esveld

Updated on May 20, 2023

7 Star Hotels

Seven stars hotels. You’ve probably heard about them, but the details are left in the murky waters of a culture trying its best to impress as much as possible. Because what we all know is that hotel rating has traditionally a range spanning from one to five stars.

So where does the 7 star rating comes from? And what does it mean, what does a 7 star hotel offers beyond the 5 stars we know and like? There’s no clear answer to these questions, but we’ll try to shed some light on the entire thing and how it all started.

  • 7-Star Rating: How it All Started

Hotel Plaza Athenee Lobby

It all began with a journalist who covered the opening of the iconic Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai back in 1999. Astonished by the pretentiousness of the construction, which eventually became the symbol of Dubai, the journalist came up with the term seven star to express the fact that the Burj Al Arab’s luxury couldn’t possibly be encompassed by the traditional 5 star standard.

The idea of a seven star hotel caught on and became a way of highlighting that some hotels are way ahead and above of the traditional 5 star standards, offering a never before seen grandeur and plushness, and an experience most people could only dream of.

  • Do 7 Star Hotels Really Exist?

Do 7 Star Hotels Really Exist

Officially, seven star hotels don’t exist.

What exists is 5 star hotels that offer a much more impressive experience than most other 5 star hotels, so the luxury, the experience, they’re all there. The rating of 7 stars though, is not. At least not officially.

Some hotels like to rate themselves unofficially, or include that in their tagline or description to signal that what they offer is a lot more than a traditional 5 star hotel.

  • Are They Recognized as 7 Stars?

Emirates Palace Suite

As we mentioned above, there is no official seven star rating. But there may be some official classification associations that have included various properties in the so called seven star elite, but nothing widely recognized, not to mention globally.

All over the world, the only standard classification system is the one to five star one. It’s a uniform system to make classification easier across the states that use international standardization, but most countries adhere to it to be on common ground. So, officially, the highest rating a hotel or resort can achieve is 5 stars.

Anything more is only the desire of guests, reviewers, journalists, or developers themselves to praise the respective properties for offering bigger, more luxurious, or more excessive accommodation.

  • What Makes a Hotel Worthy of 7 Stars?

COMO Laucala Island

The 7 star tagline is usually reserved for those hotels and resorts that, in a way, redefine our understanding of luxury. While 5 star hotels traditionally offer deluxe standards when it comes to room comfort, the quality of their restaurants and serving, and other amenities such as pools, spas, or gyms, and various extra services, a 7 star hotel would go way beyond that.

That would mean Michelin restaurants, world class amenities and astonishing natural settings, exceptional private services with customized experience for each of their guests, uniquely designed and furnished suites, extremely spacious rooms, private pools and facilities, and many more.

On the other hand, you can expect exorbitant prices, with some stays exceeding tens of thousands of dollars per night.

Now that we understand what the 7 star rating is all about, let’s now find out which hotels are widely recognized as offering that kind of exquisite experience. We’ll look at several projects that were started and never finished, some that are almost there, and the ones that truly offer something that crosses the boundaries of what most of us deem luxurious.

Honorable Mentions:

  • 15. Hotel President Wilson – Geneva, Switzerland

Hotel President Wilson

Hotel President Wilson in Geneva, Switzerland is a 5 star hotel that offers the largest and most expansive hotel suite in the world, called the Royal Penthouse suite.

It spans over an entire floor and features no less than 12 grand bedrooms, with a night there costing around $80,000. That suite alone is worthy of a 7 star hotel experience, so it had to take up a spot here.

  • 14. Oberoi Udaivilas Hotel – Udaipur, India

Oberoi Udaivilas Hotel

The Oberoi Udaivilas Hotel in Udaipur, India is an extremely luxurious hotel that resembles more a palace than a traditional hotel.

Situated on the shores of Lake Pichola, and occupying 50 acres of gorgeous land, the Oberoi Udaivilas is one of the most extravagant properties in the entire world, making it worthy of the unofficial rating of 7 stars.

  • 13. The Pentominium – Dubai, UAE

The Pentominium

The Pentominium is a 1,693 feet – or 516 meters – tall skyscraper in Dubai. Though construction started back in 2008, it was halted in August 2011 due to lack of funding.

Still incomplete even today, the 122 story building was supposed to become the tallest residential building on Earth and one of the most luxurious hotels. Too bad its construction was abandoned.

  • 12. Full Moon Hotel – Baku, Azerbaijan

Death Star Hotel

The Full Moon Hotel in Baku, Azerbaijan is another very interesting project that was abandoned, this time in favor of a different design. The initial one was planned to look like a moon with rounded edges and a hole in one of the top corners, from one side resembling a “Death Star” from the film Star Wars.

The most interesting part of the design was that the building was supposed to change its appearance depending on the view angle. Nevertheless, when it will be completed, it will take its place among the most impressive buildings in the world.

  • 11. The Flower of the East – Kish Island, Iran

Flower of the East

Situated on the Iranian Kish Island in the Persian Gulf, the Flower of the East was one of the biggest tourism projects in the area, with construction started in 2004, supposed to be finished by 2010, but cancelled in 2007.

The building was to become one of the most luxurious hotels in the world, so it could have been one of the unofficial 7 star hotels worldwide.

The Widely Recognized 7 Star Hotels:

  • 10. Oberoi Rajvilas Hotel – Jaipur, India

Oberoi Rajvilas Hotel

Part of the Oberoi hotels, the Rajvilas Hotel in Jaipur, India is another stunning property that can be catalogued as a 7 star experience.

It’s one that goes way beyond the traditional luxury accommodation, with stunning views of nature and excellent private services, not to mention the incredibly luxurious and spacious villas, rooms, and even tents.

  • 9. The Centaurus – Islamabad, Pakistan

Mövenpick Hotel Centaurus Islamabad

The Centaurus in Islamabad was Pakistan’s way to get on the map for international luxury travel. It’s part hotel, part mall with food court, part residential building, part office, and it’s impressive both from the outside and from the inside.

Called the Mövenpick Hotel Centaurus Islamabad, this hotel was planned for opening back in 2018, but that was pushed until the fourth quarter of 2022. The future hotel is not yet ready to receive its first guests, but when it will, the experience will most likely exceed the 5 star rating.

  • 8. Seven Stars Galleria – Milan, Italy

Galleria Vik Milano

Situated deep in the heart of Milan, Italy, the Seven Stars Galleria is part of the famed Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and the only hotel that has an official 7 star rating. It appears that the hotel owner hired a company to create a custom European ranking, so that the hotel could receive an official 7 stars.

But that’s still not the same as being official worldwide seen from the perspective of an international rating, so technically it’s still not officially recognized.

On the other hand though, the world class accommodation in the dreamlike rooms and suites speaks of something more. Today the hotel is actually called Galleria Vik Milano .

What Are 7 Star Hotels and Where Do You Find them?

Ever had a friend brag to you about staying in a 7-star hotel and thought, huh we all know traditional hotel ratings operate on a scale of one to five, so what gives these places the right to tack on another two in this article, we debunk some of the myths associated with these luxury resorts, what qualifies different places to take on the title, and the 7-star hotels that we’re adding to our dream bucket list., are 7-star hotels officially recognised.

Officially, a 7-star rating is impossible. Across the world, fairly uniform hotel classification systems are used, particularly in instances of international standardisation, such as the European Hotelstars Union (HSU ). According to these systems, the maximum rating a hotel can achieve is officially 5-stars.

However, this hasn’t stopped journalists, reviewers and guests creating a coveted, unofficial 7-star category in online and public discourse. In the never-ending search to create bigger, more luxurious and more excessive hotel resorts, property developers hope that their next project will smash records and redefine the limits of luxury accommodation. With such hype, comes a promise that the traditional 5-star rating system is simply too primitive for the opulence and grandeur of a new hotel development.

In recent years, the possibility of a nation’s first 7-star hotel is generally floated by the developers and tourist boards themselves, drumming up anticipation for a resort of national pride. In the same way that an extravagant castle or palace would be built hundreds of years ago, to impress visiting aristocrats and foreign elite, today 7-star hotels are the ultimate jewel in a nation’s crown, inviting the powerful and wealthy from all over the world to marvel at a nation’s power. The Burj Khalifa for example, as the tallest building in the world, was designed to symbolically place Dubai as a world leader in wealth, power and luxury.

What Makes a Hotel 7-Star Worthy?

A resort is associated with the phrase “7-star” if it truly redefines widespread understandings of luxury. If a hotel offers comfortable rooms, high-quality restaurants and well-maintained pool areas or gyms, it will often qualify for 5-stars. However, some resorts are challenged to turn this on its head, shattering records and offering something totally unique.

Other attributes may include:

- Record number and variety of pool and spa facilities

- Presence of world-class Michelin-star chefs

- Each room (or suite) uniquely designed and furnished

- Staggering array of services on offer

- Unmatched views of nature or famous landmarks

- Exceptional quality of private and discrete service

- Enhanced flexibility of service, catering to visitor’s every need

Widely Recognised 7-Star Hotels:

Pangu 7-star - beijing.

One way to be certain that people will associate your hotel with 7-stars, is to literally call it Pangu 7-Star. This luxury complex in Beijing, designed in 2008, occupies the first block of the Pangu Plaza. The resort boasts two pavilions, a temple, world-class restaurants, 234 guest rooms, 140 suits and the world’s first traditional Chinese courtyard in the sky. During the Beijing Olympics (the stadiums of which are located right beside the hotel), Bill Gates stayed here.

Laucala Island Resort – Fiji

If the paradise beaches of Fiji weren’t enough, this resort truly encapsulates the spirit of luxury. Comprising just 25 villas, the resort employs over 300 staff, making it one of the most well-looked after residences in the world. During their stay, guests can benefit from private chefs, nannies, drivers and cleaners, leaving them totally free to relax and unwind. From private infinity pools to panoramic beachside bedrooms - this place is the stuff of pure honeymoon fantasy.

Emirates Palace – Abu Dhabi

7 star travel

Few buildings in the world quite merit the label of “palace” like the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. From the palm-tree lined strip leading up to the resort, the palace emerges like a mirage over the horizon, glittering with fountains, turrets, balconies and trees. Highly classic in its design, yet fitted to every modern luxury imaginable, a stay here is designed to feel like falling into a fantasy. Once inside, the grandeur continues, with sweeping staircases leading up to an ethereal, geometric dome to the heavens.

Hotel Plaza Athenee – Paris

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hôtel Plaza Athénée (@plaza_athenee)

If 7-star hotels offer unrivalled views of a famous view or landmark, then the Hotel Plaza Athenee in Paris has to qualify. Located just opposite the Eiffel Tower, the private balconies attached to each room fulfil every romantic’s dream of breakfast with a view. Throwing open the windows and pulling back the curtains, visitors can enjoy their morning coffee with unimpeded access to Paris’s distinctive skyline. Each room is designed with classic French extravagance in mind, complete with chandeliers, window-side coffee table and armchairs as well as a pillow menu.

Taj Falknuma – India

Originally built for the Nizam of Hyderabad in 1884, this palace is now a hotel, encapsulating classic European style at its most opulent. If the idea of a chauffeur appeals, how about taking it one step further with horse and carriage? Visitors are also assigned a personal butler, to see to their every request. When staying in a palace like this, the best activity is simply getting lost: whether it be swanning around marble dining rooms, admiring Italian-style frescoes and sweeping staircases, or strolling through the rolling grounds and moonlit terraces.

Karkloof Safari Villas – South Africa

This resort in South Africa takes safari to the next level. An “untouched paradise” hidden within the Kwazulu-Natal Midlands , each villa is nestled amongst rich waterfalls and hills, connected by wooden walkways. The main lodge and spa offer excellent bespoke packages for relaxing after a long day of safari rides. There are also childcare facilities and a bar on site!

The Shangri-La Bosphorus – Turkey

For those keen to get a flavour of Turkish hospitality and luxurious hammams, whilst closely located to Istanbul’s distinctive old town, the Shangri-La Bosphorus in Turkey is the perfect package. Room’s offer spectacular views over the Bosphorus, many complete with private terrace. The Chi Spa is a world-class building, bursting with steam rooms, delicately designed hammam rooms and massage treatment options.

Burj Al Arab – Dubai

7 star travel

Our final hotel is once again in Dubai, and it tops many lists as the most luxurious hotel in the world. The Burj Al Arab hotel was built in 1999, nestled on its own separate island just off the mainland and connected by curving bridge. The building resembles the sail of a ship and is complete with a helipad near its top. The hotel’s most iconic room is the Royal Suite , a sweeping series of carpeted rooms, featuring four-poster beds, gold hangings, chandeliers and private dining room. A night in this room will set you back $24,000, making it one of the most expensive hotel rooms in the world.

Can a Hotel Really Have 7 Stars?

A history of luxury hotel ratings systems—and how the “seven-star” hotel was born..

  • Copy Link copied

When it opened in 1999, the Burj Al Arab was an international sensation. Sheikh Mohammed, the prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and the man behind the luxury hotel in Dubai, resolved to make it the world’s best property, bar none. At 1,054 feet high, and with a construction tab of $1 billion, it debuted as both the tallest and most expensive hotel in the world. Its dramatic, sail-inspired architecture—a nod to a J-class yacht—became a signature building for the United Arab Emirates, its answer to Sydney’s iconic Opera House. There was a six-to-one staff to guest ratio, diners arrived at the Al Mahara seafood restaurant via submarine, and more than 5,500 pounds of gold leaf covered the maximalist interiors. And it was the first time a hotel had ever been called “seven star.”

The designation allegedly came from a journalist who used the phrase in a swooning article that attempted to capture the glory of the Burj Al Arab, claiming the hotel was in a category of its own. Despite the fact that the still unnamed journalist’s story was referenced ad nauseum by other news outlets, there’s no record of any such article in media databases.

Since then, other hotels have gone on to claim the same arbitrary seven-star accolade. One resort in Turks & Caicos went so far as to borrow it for its name (the Seven Stars Resort and Spa), while Indian hotelier Oberoi recently announced plans to build a raft of properties that it claims will fit that designation. Meanwhile, travelers are happy to hashtag a humblebrag stay with #sevenstars (current IG tally: more than 47,500 posts).

We generally accept hotel ratings unquestioningly, rattling off that a hotel is a five-, six-, or seven-star property with confidence, even if we’d struggle to explain what earned it such plaudits. But where and how did the “seven-star” designation emerge, and what does it mean, if anything? And are these multi-star hotel ratings truly the ultimate definition of luxury? The answers are less straightforward than you might assume.

Is there such thing as a “seven-star hotel”?

Cynics would suggest this myth-making might sound more like marketing department smokescreen—and it’s certainly not a designation that any official body awards. “The blurb and hype of a personal six-, seven-, or even 10-star rating is just that: puff,” says Jules Maury, the luxury expert who runs Scott Dunn Private . “There are no official seven-star hotels.”

Indeed, the most famous bodies worldwide that rank hotels have no designations beyond five stars—if they use stars at all. Many of these organizations are household names, including Forbes and AAA, which use both stars and diamonds. Other new entrants, like the just-launched World’s 50 Best Hotels , rank hotels in an entirely different, qualitative way: They use an anonymous panel of industry insiders whose votes are tallied to create the eventual ranking.

Now, a storied player has announced its entry into the field: Michelin. The French firm that, like AAA, has its origins in motoring—in this case, making tires—began offering rankings on restaurants as an amenity to drivers. Now it’s moving into hotels, confirming the sense that such a move was afoot when it gobbled up boutique booking engine Tablet Hotels five years ago, an inkling that such efforts might be underway. The company is set to reveal its selection of 5,000 hotels across 120 countries next year. It will award keys, not stars, to hotels, based on five criteria, though a spokesperson couldn’t confirm the planned range of the rankings.

The history of five-star hotel rankings

While the “seven-star hotel” appears to be more of a myth than anything, five-star benchmarking is surprisingly recent—and subjective, too, according to an organization’s own criteria. It was only in the 1950s when what’s now Exxon Mobil underwrote a Mobil Travel Guide guide to hotels for drivers in the United States. The authors opted to rank their stays on a scale of five stars—nodding, probably, to the five exclamation marks used more than a century earlier by British travel writer Mariana Starke, who took an opinionated romp through France and Italy in the 1820s.

While the “seven-star hotel” appears to be more of a myth than anything, five-star benchmarking is surprisingly recent—and subjective, too.

Mobile Travel Guide authors Marion and Alden Stevens soon hired a team of reviewers to work for them on the project, and hotels scrambled to secure impressive rankings and, as a result, bookings. The power of those ratings became clear so quickly that countless other systems emerged. There was the U.K.’s answer to AAA (the abbreviated AA). In 1979, the Swiss Hotel Association launched the first-ever country-specific ratings system for hotels there. Other countries have followed: The French Atout France body is publicly run via France’s tourism board, and New Zealand’s is administered by Qualmark, a subsisidary of the government’s tourism arm. But even though ratings systems have become enormously impactful for hotels, there’s no independent body overseeing the ever-proliferating number of rating systems, and so there’s no way to verify or police the quality of ranking systems of various organizations. Think of them as the travel world’s answer to the Golden Globes: starry and compelling but open to abuse.

Will there ever be an independent hotel star-rating system?

There have been attempts to create a globally recognized independent system: The best known is the Hotelstars Union , formed in 2009, and now operating across a number of mostly European Union countries, from the Baltics to Malta and Greece. The union has clear parameters for its rankings, including the top tier, five stars, made publicly visible on its website here. Maria Dinböck, secretary general of the organization, told AFAR she considered it “unwise to increase the maximum number of stars achievable for each new extreme luxury hotel by one or more levels, as if the classification were moving upwards on a Richter scale.”

Then there’s the World Hotel Rating , also established in 2009, mostly to focus on sifting five-star hotels to better gauge their quality. Despite much fanfare at launch, the organization has made little concrete progress since then; it did not respond to multiple requests for comment from AFAR, and its website is a single holding page.

Still, the problem with regulating hotel rating systems is that it’s not in anyone’s interests (or profit) to do so. The opacity of criteria, and the ability to self-certify, are convenient for most hoteliers. Take the Hotel Seven Stars Galleria in Milan, which claims to be Italy’s only seven-star hotel. Dig deeper, though, and it isn’t a ranking issued by the tourism agency or Forbes. Rather, the owners reached out to an independent Geneva-based company to custom-build criteria that would verify the property as a seven-starrer: Is it in an iconic structure that adds value to the city, and are there more suites than rooms? Sure enough, it emerged with the exact seven-star designation as planned.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Moscow, Russia

You are here, about moscow.

Moscow is unlike any other city on Earth. It is the wealthy economic center for one-sixth of the world's land mass and has over 120 ethnic groups and nationalities. A diverse and vibrant city with a strange combination of traditional Russian architecture and newer Soviet tastelessness, Moscow is an adventure waiting to happen!

Reasons to travel to Moscow

But what makes it so popular among tourists is the concentration of Moscow attractions. When you travel to Moscow you definitely want to see the red-bricked walls of the Kremlin , to take a picture in front of St. Basil's Cathedral , and probably visit the world-famous Bolshoi Theater . All of these places are located within a very small area around Red Square , so seeing them on a walking sightseeing tour of Moscow is convenient and allows you to avoid traffic jams.

The concentration of Moscow's main sights is one of the facts that make this city a world-class tourist destination. The majority of its attractions is centered in one small area, and the Kremlin is the hub of this concentration.

These sights extend into the realm of fantasy and are a must to put on your Moscow itinerary: the colorful domes of the Cathedral of St. Vasily the Blessed, the neo-gothic consumer wonderland that is the GUM , or state department store, and the timepiece of Russia's New Year's celebrations, the Spassky clock tower, all tower over the beautiful Red Square.

The neighboring Kitay-Gorod, or "Basket-Town" (likely a reference to the construction method of the city walls surround it), remains a significant concentration of traditional Russian structures serving as a commercial center. The Bolshoi Theater, the Lubyanka, and the hotels that tower above the Manege Square all are situated within the Boulevard Ring, an urban open-space doubling as a heavily-trafficked roadway created after the Great Fire of 1812, the one that left Napoleon's Army starving deep within wintry Russia.

Moscow transport system

As Europe's largest metropolis, and the 5th largest city in the world, Moscow comes with its share of traffic blunders. It seems that all of the world's most expensive black cars are here, and that most of the city's car owners do not understand the difference between sidewalks and parking lots. Still, while the traffic situation leaves much to be desired, the Moscow subway is superb.

The advanced Metro system carries up to 3 million passengers a day and its trains run every few minutes. With stations that could rival art museums, the Metro is one of Moscow's great must-see sights. Travel in Moscow Metro at least once to see that there is nothing like it in the world.

Best time to visit Moscow

The peak of the Moscow travel season is May through September. However, you may prefer to savor Moscow tourism delicacies during the low travel season. The snowy winter months offer just as many entertainment options as one can find during summer.

You can celebrate New Year's Eve or see Russia's biggest ice rink on Red Square, taste blinis or visit one of the numerous winter markets. Any popular St. Petersburg - Moscow tour hides a handful of memorable experiences the whole year round!

Although the best time to visit Moscow is from May to September, the city in winter still enchants with its towers and lights. Its great celebrations on the day of the October Revolution (held on November 7, a discrepancy resulting from the difference between the traditional Russian Julian calendar and the Gregorian calendar in use around the world today), and New Years Day make it the place to be. Of course, the best way to plan your trip is through one of our package tours to Moscow. If you are planning a trip to Russia , don't hesitate to contact our experienced travel experts who'll be glad to help.

Joe Wolf, who played for North Carolina and 7 NBA teams, dies at 59

Joe Wolf, a former North Carolina captain for Dean Smith who went on to play for seven teams in an 11-year NBA career before becoming a coach, died unexpectedly Thursday, the Milwaukee Bucks announced.

Wolf, an assistant coach for the Wisconsin Herd — the Bucks' G League affiliate — was 59.

Recommended Videos

“Throughout his life, Joe touched many lives and was a highly respected, adored and dedicated coach and player across the NBA,” the Bucks said in a release announcing Wolf's death. “His well-regarded talent was instrumental for the Bucks and Herd over eight years with the organization, including as a player and coach.”

Wolf was a high school All-American in 1983 before joining the Tar Heels to play alongside the likes of Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins. Wolf was a co-captain for the Tar Heels as a senior in 1986-87, sharing that role with Kenny Smith.

North Carolina went 115-22 in Wolf's four seasons, making the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight twice in that span. Wolf — a 6-foot-11 center and forward — quickly moved into coaching once his NBA career was done, using skills he said Smith began instilling in him from the start of his college experience.

“I like to think I started getting trained the minute I stepped on campus,” Wolf told the Greensboro (N.C.) News and Record in 2018. “Coach Smith was all about building the proper habits. That benefits me today.”

He was an All-ACC pick in 1987 and left North Carolina with 1,231 points. The Los Angeles Clippers used the No. 13 pick in the 1987 draft on Wolf, who spent his first three NBA seasons there before playing for Denver, Charlotte, Orlando, Portland, Boston and Milwaukee — a return to his home state of Wisconsin, where he was a high school legend.

Wolf led Kohler High School to three Wisconsin state championships, and in 2005 the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel named him the state's greatest high school basketball player ever, the Bucks said.

He coached at the college level as an assistant at William & Mary and UNC Wilmington, was a head coach in what is now called the G League with Idaho, Colorado and Greensboro, had been an NBA assistant for Milwaukee and Brooklyn and was hired in 2023 as a G League assistant for the Herd.
