Our planet is home to countless landmarks that boggle the mind with their staggering beauty, storied history, and groundbreaking engineering. But some of them are so special—and so emblematic of the historic periods, peoples, and advancements they represent—that they’ve been declared wonders of the world. The original wonders of the world list was compiled all the way back in the second century BCE. Of the seven sites on that list, only one— the Great Pyramids of Giza , in Egypt—still exists. But that doesn’t mean you’ve missed out entirely. Happily, a new wonders of the world list is serving up inspiration for travelers who want to experience such grandeur in person. So, what are the New Seven Wonders of the World? Read on to find out—and take advantage of our Black Friday travel deals to book tours that can get you to the ones you most want to see.
1. The Great Wall of China
A 5,500-mile-long marvel spanning mountains and millennia.
Constructed over the course of 2,300 years, the Great Wall of China—the largest of the seven wonders of the world—has been the subject of debate, from its length to its visibility from space. (Astronauts have said that it’s practically microscopic from that high up.) One thing’s for sure, though: The Great Wall of China is worthy of its ranking among the seven wonders of the world. That’s thanks in part to its deceptive beauty, as staffer Nilsen discovered while on our China: Beijing, Yangtze River Cruise & Shanghai tour . “Up close, it’s angular, hard, and made of stone,” he said of the serpentine structure. “As you look across the mountains, however, it appears as if it flows smoothly over the landscape.” Staffer Ketsia was struck by a strategic detail of the wall’s design. “The stairs were intentionally unevenly built as a tactic against invaders,” she said. The scenery around the wall wowed Ketsia, too. “I am afraid of heights, but being able to see the surrounding views was truly worth it,” she said. For travelers hoping to enjoy this world wonder without crowds around, savvy staffer Priscilla suggests traveling to China during shoulder season. “I visited China in November, so there were no crowds and I could really feel all of the Great Wall’s wonder and history while I was walking along it,” she said.
2. Chichén Itzá, Mexico
A treasure trove of mayan artifacts on the yucatán peninsula.
In 2007, UNESCO named Chichén Itzá—an archaeological site on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula—one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. An important city-state in pre-Hispanic America, Chichén Itzá is now among the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico. It’s home to 26 Mayan ruins, but the well-preserved pyramid known as El Castillo has become symbolic of the site. Its construction is nothing short of impressive. “The way the pyramid was designed in combination with the city creates natural acoustics,” said staffer Kristin. “That way, you can hear what people are saying from the other side of the pyramid.” Want to experience the phenomenon for yourself? Add the Yucatán Peninsula extension to our Highlights of Mexico: Oaxaca to Mexico City tour and visit during your free time. Or, you can ask our travel planners to arrange a pre- or post-tour stay in the area for one of our tours to Mexico , or to plan a Customized Tour for seven or more travelers.
3. Petra, Jordan
A prehistoric city carved into sandstone cliffs.
It may be known best for its towering Treasury building—carved into a red, sandstone hill in the second century C.E. by ancient Arab people known as the Nabataeans—but there’s actually more to Petra, a prehistoric trading center in Jordan and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. “If you’re fit enough to take a hike at Petra when you travel to Jordan , the real hidden gem is what’s referred to as the monastery,” said staffer Kristin. “It’s about a 45-minute or hour-long hike up to get there, but if you’re looking to get some iconic pictures with far fewer crowds, it’s worth it. Be prepared, though: The hike isn’t easy!” Staffer Christina visited Petra in 1995, shortly after a peace treaty was brokered between the State of Israel and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan—and before the site made its way onto most travelers’ radar. She returned in 2009 to find Petra abuzz with visitors. “Suddenly, a city had arisen outside of the entrance to Petra, where, before, there had been one hotel,” she said. For Christina, despite this commercial development near Petra since her previous visit, “The size, the impression of Petra, the awesomeness of the idea of a forgotten city was no less.”
4. Machu Picchu, Peru
A once-hidden citadel high in the andes.
Considering its sophisticated design, its seemingly impossible engineering, and its remote setting high in the Andes Mountains, Machu Picchu deserves its designation as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, as travelers will discover on our trips to Peru . Staffer Shannon visited the 15th-century Incan citadel on our A Week in Peru: Lima, Cuzco & Machu Picchu tour and was left haunted by a particular period in its past. “This city was lost at some point—like, completely forgotten by humanity,” she said of the site, which remained hidden from the world until explorer Hiram Bingham came upon it in 1911. “It’s terrifying to think about that, but it puts a lot into perspective. This isn’t just a place where you can get that quintessential Instagram pic—it has a ton of history that more people should know about.” Plus, she adds, “It was jaw-droppingly gorgeous... the feat of building it at the top of a mountain with steep cliffs off both sides is also unreal.”
5. Christ the Redeemer, Brazil
A symbol of christianity watching over rio de janeiro.
When it comes to the Seven Wonders of the World, Christ the Redeemer stands head, shoulders, and open arms above the rest. Constructed between 1922 and 1931, the 98-foot-tall Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ towers over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from the top of Corcovado mountain. But, for travelers on our trips to Brazil , the thrill of seeing this world wonder begins before reaching Corcovado’s peak. “One of the most exciting things before visiting this site was spotting it from the city streets,” said staffer Alex. “Arriving in Rio, looking up from the taxi window, and seeing how magnificent it looks standing on top of the mountains made me even more eager to get there.” For Alex, going to the top of the mountain to see the statue up close proved worthwhile. “It’s almost surreal, climbing the last steps to the top. The statue itself is majestic and almost calming,” she said. “You can stroll through the whole sky-high platform and observe the breathtaking views of the city and ocean below. Definitely a must-see when traveling to Rio de Janeiro!”
6. The Colosseum, Rome
A grand arena built for entertainment of epic proportions.
Although they won’t see gladiators battling it out or hear the roar of a rowdy crowd in the stands, it’s all easy to imagine for travelers on our Rome tours who visit the Colosseum, the only one of the Seven New Wonders of the World located in Europe. The nearly 2,000-year-old icon of Rome may have been the largest amphitheater built during the Roman Empire, but staffer Ren, who explored it on our London, Paris & Rome tour , delighted in some of its smaller, surprising details. “It was fascinating, learning that the many, many holes in the Colosseum weren’t due to invaders, but due to citizens looking for valuable raw material to repurpose,” they said. "That stood out to me the most... to see it pockmarked full of holes, thinking there was some larger-than-life story behind it all, only to learn the answer was much simpler and more human than you’d initially think.” Perhaps none of the wonders of the world have influenced modern design the way the Colosseum has, according to staffer Justin. “It was amazing to see how some features of the Colosseum reminded me of any modern stadium and how much has survived for all of these years,” he said.
7. The Taj Mahal, India
A larger-than-life expression of love.
If you’re an architecture buff—or a hopeless romantic—consider putting the Taj Mahal on your Seven Wonders of the World travel wish list. In the 17th century, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the massive mosque in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Nearly 400 years later, what originated as a grand, architectural expression of love remains one of the most revered and celebrated sites to visit on our trips to India .
“What was truly incredible about the Taj was the lingering thought that it was built well before the United States became an independent country,” said staffer Gustavo, who visited the Taj Mahal on our India: Delhi, Agra & Jaipur tour . Staffer Avani, whose family hails from India, agrees. “There’s a reason it’s one of the seven wonders of the world,” she said. “All of the stones are carved so perfectly and intentionally. It’s so magnificent and holy. You can tell it was a labor of pure love and dedication. There’s truly nothing like it.”
Explore these wonders of the world on tour—and save a little while you’re at it with our Black Friday travel deals before they’re gone.

The main highlights are Machu Picchu , the Corcovado statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro, and lastly the mighty Iguazu Falls in Argentina. But there is so much more to see and do on this World Wonders tour.
This trip can also be done in reverse i.e. From Rio to Lima.
Day 1 | Arrival in Lima
Your 3 World Wonders tour starts upon your arrival at Lima airport when we will transfer you to your chosen hotel in the Miraflores, San Isidro or Barranco areas of the city. Enjoy the rest of the day as free time to enjoy the world-famous Peruvian food and Pisco Sour cocktails.
Note: You can arrive at any time today but is you arrive early we could potentially save a day by doing your Lima activities today.
Day 2 | Lima City Tour
Today you will be collected from your hotel for a full or half-day tour of Colonial and Modern Lima. You visit Lima Cathedral and the Church and Convent of San Francisco, among other places of interest. After lunch, which we can arrange for you if you wish, you have a large number of options and could choose to visit a museum, such as the excellent Larco Herrera for example, the Gold Museum or the National Museum.
Peruvian Gastronomy Option: Many of our clients are enjoying adding this to their day in Lima, click the link to see all the details. If you book this within our package it will cost you less, so just ask us to include it.
The evening could continue with a visit to the spectacular Fountain Park in the center of Lima. It can be a very full day of sightseeing in this bustling, historic metropolis if you wish. We custom-design everything to your wishes.
Day 3 | Cusco City Tour
This morning you will be driven to Lima airport for your short flight to Cusco. Upon arrival in Cusco, we will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in the lovely historic center.
Cusco is the jewel in the crown of Peru and your time spent here will never be forgotten. In the afternoon you will enjoy a Cusco City Tour visiting the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman plus the three other smaller Inca ruins nearby; Cusco Cathedral in the main square; and the most important temple of the Inca Empire, the Coricancha, the Inca Temple of the Sun.
Later in the day, you will enjoy a Cusco City Tour visiting the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, plus three other smaller Inca ruins close to Cusco; Cusco Cathedral in the main square; and the most important temple of the Inca Empire, Coricancha , the Inca Temple of the Sun.
Cusco is a lovely city to wander around and you should take time to do this when not being guided. Make sure you walk around the San Blas district.
Video of Saqsaywaman Fortress + Perfect Inca Wall
Day 4 | Sacred Valley of the Incas Tour
This is a Sacred Valley tour option that includes a visit to Chinchero, an ancient village where much of its original character and traditions have been maintained. We will often use this route on shared tours to avoid many of the crowds in the Pisaq area.
Today we will take you on a full-day tour to the Sacred Valley of the Incas and include a buffet lunch so you can recharge your batteries along the way. The tour of the Urubamba Valley includes a visit to the community of twelve weaving families, called “The Inca Balcony” in the ancient village of Chinchero, between Cusco and the valley. Chinchero is a place where the ancestral methods of coloring and manufacturing of fabrics and weaving are still being used today and is not as touristy a village as some in the area giving you a more authentic feel. The views of Chinchero and the surrounding areas cannot be beaten.
Later, we will arrive in Moray, an impressing pre-Inca greenhouse, then, we will have lunch in a local restaurant. After lunch, you will visit the Inca town and fortress at Ollantaytambo, the site of an important Inca temple and the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti. It is believed to have some of the oldest, continuously occupied dwellings in the Americas – dating back to the late 15th century. After your day out you will be dropped off at your Sacred Valley hotel or driven back to Cusco depending on your schedule with us.
Day 5 | Machu Picchu Tour | First Visit
You may have an early start to catch your chosen train to Machu Picchu which will be one of the services described in the link below. The advantage you have is that you have stayed in the valley overnight and therefore do not have to get up as early as you would in Cusco to catch the train and you have more time to play with later in the day.
A transfer will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the station. After the 90-minute train ride, you will be met in Aguas Calientes by your guide, you drop off your overnight bags at your hotel before taking the bus transfer up to the Machu Picchu site. Here you will enjoy a tour of one of the most spectacular places on Earth with a local guide.
In the late afternoon, you will return to your chosen hotel in Aguas Calientes, the town that nestles in the valley below Machu Picchu.
Note: The option exists to return to Cusco the same day, but if you have the time, it is well worth staying over the see this incredible place the next day.
If you prefer to stay right at the gate of Machu Picchu, and your budget will stand it, you could choose the Sanctuary Lodge, as its location cannot be beaten.
Day 6 | 2nd Machu Picchu plus Huayna Picchu
Today, you will be able to re-visit Machu Picchu and enjoy this fabulous site at your leisure. You may choose to climb Huayna Picchu, the peak that overlooks Machu Picchu (400 people per day, and by prior appointment only at either 7 am or 10 am), which affords fantastic views and photo opportunities.
In the late afternoon, you will board the train for your trip back to Cusco. You will leave the train at Poroy, the last station before Cusco, or maybe at Ollantaytambo, for a faster and more convenient transfer by road back to your hotel in Cusco. No trains actually arrive at Cusco train station from Machu Picchu any more and you do save quite a lot of time as a result.
Day 7 | Fly to Lima and connect to Rio de Janeiro
Depending on the air connections available for your World Wonders tour, we will typically fly you to Lima from Cusco in the morning, to connect with an afternoon flight to Rio. If the connections for your tour are such that you have to fly to Rio late in the day, you will have a free morning tomorrow to recover in your hotel or dozing on the famous Copacabana beach.
Whatever time you arrive in Rio de Janeiro, we will welcome you at the airport, and transfer you to your hotel, which is typically in the beach-side districts of Copacabana or Ipanema.
Day 8 | Rio de Janeiro and the Corcovado
After you have had time to rest, in the afternoon we will collect you for your half-day tour to the new Wonder of the World, the Corcovado, or White Christ statue, towering over the city of Rio. The views are unforgettable and you will be astounded! You will have an evening to enjoy Rio nightlife along the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema.
Day 9 | Rio de Janeiro and the Sugar Loaf Mountain
Today you will take a tour to see the other very famous Rio landmark, Sugar Loaf Mountain, which you will ascend by a two-stage cable car. The views from this site are also incredible, so you really cannot go wrong. Make sure you have plenty of space on your camera memory card.
Day 10 | Fly to Iguacu – see the Argentine side of falls
We will whisk you off to the airport for your hour and a half flight to the town of Foz do Iguaçu. Foz is the gateway for the spectacular Iguazu Falls. We have a wide range of hotel options from 3-star to 5-star luxury for you to choose from here so let our travel consultants help you select the best for you.
In the afternoon, you will have an excursion crossing the border to see the waterfalls from the Argentinian side. You will pass through the Iguazu National Park, enjoying the lush jungle environment, the huge rapids, and very impressive falls.
If you wish to have another day or two at the beach, either before or after Iguazu, just let us know. The tour is custom-designed just for you, we can modify anything you like!
Day 11 | Brazilian Falls and Macuco Safari
Today, you will have a full day excursion to the Brazilian side of these truly breathtaking waterfalls (please check Visa requirements for your nationality). The Iguazu waterfalls are some of the most impressive natural wonders you will ever see.
During the afternoon, you will have a spectacular boat ride right under the Falls. This is a truly amazing experience, but please note that you will be getting a little wet (plastic bags and ponchos provided).
Day 12 | Tour ends or extends…
After breakfast, you will bid farewell to Brazil as your World Wonders tour ends. We will transfer you to the airport for your flight home, via Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo…or maybe extend to Patagonia ?

Nandita & Anindo, USA – April 2023
“It was a memorable trip for sure. Completely surreal and worth it. The only thing I’d do differently is I would build in more down time for integration after ayahuasca. While Quito & Galápagos were incredible bucket list extensions, if we had to do it again, it would be with a break after ayahuasca. That said, every leg of our journey was superbly planned by you. Thank you for adding touches in Ecuador that wouldn’t have occurred to us — Cotopaxi, equator museum, caldera village. And as you know, Galápagos was other worldly and felt like a dramatic new planet. Thanks again for planning a trip of a lifetime for us.”

“Back from Panama and Cartagena. We had a wonderful trip. I was hoping that you might pass on a little compliment. Our service in Panama was outstanding. Our guide, Armando, was fabulous. Everyone in our group felt he really made the trip for us. He not only guided us along the way, but he also conversed with us. He did not just script out his information, he talked to us about life in Panama. Here is a picture of our men with Armando. He is in the middle. Let the company know how much we appreciated him”

DAY TRIPS AND TOURS
Colosseum The Colosseum is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome. Built around the 70 AD, it is the largest amphitheatre ever built and is considered one of the greatest works of architecture and engineering. And given that ‘Rome was not build in 3 days’, we’ll offer you a wide range of visits and activities all around the eternal City
Petra Petra is a historical and archaeological city in the southern Jordanian governorate of Ma’an that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved. From Amman we’ll procede to Petra and than go to the Dead Sea for some days of relax.
Taj Mahal In India we propose the classic Golden Triangle Tour – Delhi, Agra, Jaipur. In Agra you’ll discover the most beautiful Monument to Love. Constructed around 1630 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, it is the mausoleum of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. If you have many days, we have for you a long list of activities and places to see all our the incredible India subcontinent.
The Great Wall The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China to protect the Chinese states and empires against the raids and invasions of the various nomadic groups. An archaeological survey found that the entire wall measure out to be 21,196 km. But no worries, our tour is ‘only’ a 10km trek along the Great Wall! With breathtaking views and steep climbs, this trek really gets the adrenalin pumping!
Chichen Itza From the ruins at Chichen Itza, one of the seven wonders of the world, to the hustle of modern Mexico City, which preserves its magic from centuries gone by, this adventure takes in the cultural and historical highlights. It’s perfect for travellers on a tight budget looking to see as much as possible of this diverse region. Explore Mexico’s incredible history with others who share your appetite for adventure.
Machu Picchu One of our most popular trips in the region for those looking to combine the cultural highlights of the Sacred Valley with the challenge of one of the world’s best known hikes. The four-day Inca Trail trek will reward you with a stunning combination of the region’s ruins, mountainscapes and cloud forests, till you will reach Machu Picchu. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472).
Christ Redeemer Strap on your boots and fire up the camera for this short hike up the 696m Pedra Bonita. You’ll be rewarded with stunning views over Rio de Janeiro, but the sights and scenary don’t stop there. Drive through Tijuca National Forest where the “Big Dude” is waiting for you at the top. If that’s not enough, grab lunch and a cold beer in the Santa Tereza neighbourhood before walking the famous Lapa steps.

Signing up for the City Wonders tour was the best decision. So easy to meet at the appointed time and we were so lucky to have Hugo as a guide. Our time was so much more than just hitting the highlights. Hugo gave the great works context in terms of where they fit in art and history. He made it fun but also educational and so memorable.

This tour was truly amazing! It was super easy to figure out where we had to meet and from there on the City Wonders team took great care of us! Our guide, Frederic, was so thorough with explaining the history of The Palace of Versailles. By including humour and interesting facts, he made the entire experience easy to follow along with and super engaging. Would definitely recommend Frederic as a guide and this tour if you’re wanting to explore The Palace of Versailles!

Russia's Wonders: Top UNESCO Sights
You are here.
Russia alone is home to a total of 28 UNESCO World Heritage Sites! Luckily, most of them are located in the eastern part of Russia (the most visited one by foreign travelers) and may be perfect additions to any Russia itinerary . Let's take a closer look at some of them.
Moscow's UNESCO Treasures
The first unmissable destination in the capital city is its beating heart - Moscow Kremlin & Red Square . This iconic square with the colorful-domed St. Basil's Cathedral and the red-wall and towers of the Kremlin is one of the oldest parts of Moscow, noted by UNESCO.
The Square dates back to the late 1200s and has numerous historical attractions such as the Lobnoye Mesto and the Mint building.
Another point to add-on to your Moscow itinerary is Kolomenskoye. This Russia UNESCO Heritage ensemble is a former royal estate which is located near the Moscow city center. It is a striking example of authentic Russian architecture, especially the Church of Ascension, built in the 1530s.
Last but not least, when in Moscow, save some time for exploring the historical cloister - Novodevichy Convent . Translated as New Maiden, this 16th-17th-century complex is among the most spiritual and gorgeous places in the city. Note, though, that if you'd like to go there any time soon, it is currently under restoration.
Saint Petersburg City-Center
Did you know that the historic part of Russia's northern capital is actually entirely noted by UNESCO? It's true! In terms of art and style, St. Petersburg is considered to be one of the most wholesome city “compositions” in the world as most of it was built at practically the same time by the world's most talented specialists.
Numerous architectural complexes, squares, canals, bridges, parks, and gardens will surely surprise you with their beauty. The must-see buildings include the famous home of the Hermitage Museum , the Winter Palace located on Palace Square.
Moreover, several splendid Tsarist residences outside St. Petersburg made the Russia UNESCO list as well.
These are, of course, the Peterhof Palace and Parks complex as well as Catherine's Palace in Pushkin, formerly called Tsarskoye Selo, among others.
Did You Know? The historic part of St. Petersburg is actually entirely noted by UNESCO.
Golden Ring Gems
Those interested in history should definitely save a couple of days for exploring the "Golden Ring" circuit. As such, the town of Suzdal has well-preserved buildings and is one of the oldest Russian towns. The Suzdal Kremlin as well as numerous churches dating back to the 13th century.
The nearby Vladimir was founded more than 1 thousand years old and was once the capital city of ancient Rus. Its 12th-century certainly cathedrals deserve your time.
Another place on the Golden Ring map is Sergiev Posad , famous for its Trinity Sergius Lavra, made up of several medieval structures. The so-called "Russian Vatican" is a spiritual place located in the surroundings of the gorgeous Russian countryside. Lastly, the historic center of Yaroslavl also boasts Russia UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The town stands on the shores of the Volga and has many untouched authentic buildings.
Kazan Region's Wonders
The third capital of Russia is not like any other Russian town. The multiethnic city has for centuries been known for its religious tolerance, a great example of which is the Kazan Kremlin. On the territory of this Russia UNESCO sight stand side by side the Kul Sharif Mosque and the Annunciation Cathedral, both of which are important city landmarks.
The highlights don't stop at that as you can also spend a day visiting Bolgar which is not very far from Kazan. This attraction of Tatarstan holds the remnants of the historic settlement of Volga Bulgaria and now offers a complex with museums and ancient structures.
Finally, the spiritual mecca, Sviyazhsk, makes for a great day trip from Kazan. Standing on a separate island, the monastery and Assumption Cathedral were both built around the 1550s on the order of Ivan the Terrible who seized Kazan.
Kizhi Pogost & Karelia
For a touch of something truly Russian and unique, plan a visit to the marvelous part of Russia - Kizhi Island .
The destination is well worth a visit as here you can see the only one of its kind in the world wooden Transfiguration Church with a total of 22 adorned domes and built without any nails.
Moreover, the open-air complex itself brings together examples of authentic wooden architecture and displays what a traditional village looks like.
Apart from that, you can also spend time in the nearby Ruskeala Mountain Park and admire the UNESCO-listed gorgeous Karelia nature. The territory of the region borders Finland and is noted for its wonderful lakes, marble canyon, and mountainous park.
The Transfiguration Church is with a total of 22 adorned domes and built without any nails.
Lake Baikal
Without a doubt, the deepest freshwater lake on our planet, the Baikal , is a must-see natural UNESCO wonder.
Situated not far from Irkutsk, Lake Baikal is protected by the government and is an often visited place by globetrotters.
Other natural beauties on the UNESCO Russia map include the Kamchatka volcanoes, located in Russia's the Far East. This less-discover region has remarkable wild nature and is especially popular among hikers and mountain-climbing enthusiasts.
What is more, the Curonian Spit, set in the Baltics Region, is something out of the ordinary too. You can visit this drifting sandy dune when visiting the city of Kaliningrad.
With the plethora of places to discover and the rich list of Russia UNESCO sites, a journey to this country is surely worth it! Ready to start planning your trip? Don't hesitate to contact our experienced travel experts and plan your worry-free Russia vacation to remember.
