Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to travel to the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons who want to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1 visa), for tourism (B-2 visa), or for a combination of both purposes (B-1/B-2 visa).

Here are some examples of activities permitted with a visitor visa:

Business (B-1)

• Consult with business associates
• Attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
• Settle an estate
• Negotiate a contract

Tourism (B-2)

• Vacation (holiday)
• Visit with friends or relatives
• Medical treatment

You should generally schedule an appointment for your visa interview at the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate  in the country where you live. You may schedule your interview at another U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will be present but aware that in some cases it may be more difficult to demostrate your qualifications for a visa outside of the country where you live.

Gather Required Documentation

Gather and prepare the following required documents before your visa interview:

• Passport valid for travel to the United States – Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States (unless exempt by country-specific agreements ). Each individual who needs a visa must submit a separate application, including any family members listed in your passport.
• Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 confirmation page.
• Application fee payment receipt, if you are required to pay before your interview.
• Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. If the photo upload fails, you must bring one printed photo in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements .

Additional Documentation May Be Required

Review the instructions for how to apply for a visa on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply. Additional documents may be requested to establish if you are qualified. For example, additional requested documents may include evidence of:

• The purpose of your trip,
• Your intent to depart the United States after your trip, and/or
• Your ability to pay all costs of the trip.   

Evidence of your employment and/or your family ties may be sufficient to show the purpose of your trip and your intent to return to your home country. If you cannot cover all the costs for your trip, you may show evidence that another person will cover some or all costs for your trip.

Note:  Visa applicants must qualify based on their ties abroad/to their home country, rather than assurances from U.S. family and friends. A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a visitor visa. If you choose to bring a letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support to your interview, please remember it is not one of the factors used in determining whether to issue or deny the visa.

Attend Your Visa Interview

A consular officer will interview you to determine whether you are qualified to receive a visitor visa. You must establish that you meet the requirements under U.S. law to receive a visa.  Ink-free, digital fingerprint scans are taken as part of the application process. They are usually taken during your interview, but this varies based on location.

After your visa interview, the consular officer may determine that your application requires further  administrative processing .  The consular officer will inform you if this required.

After the visa is approved, you may need to pay a visa issuance fee (if applicable to your nationality), and make arrangements for the return of the passport and visa to you.  Review the  visa processing times  to learn more.

Entering the United States

A visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States. A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. If you are allowed to enter the United States, the CBP official will provide an admission stamp or a paper Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record. Learn more about admissions and entry requirements, restrictions about bringing food, agricultural products, and other restricted/prohibited goods, and more by reviewing the CBP website .

Extending Your Stay

See  Extend Your Stay  on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website to learn about requesting to extend your stay beyond the date indicated on your admission stamp or paper Form I-94. 

Failure to depart the United States on time will result in being  out of status . Under U.S. law, visas of individuals who are out of status are automatically voided ( Section 222(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act ).  Any multiple entry visa that was voided due to being out of status will not be valid for future entries into the United States.

Change of Status

If your plans change while in the United States (for example, you marry a U.S. citizen or receive an offer of employment), you may be able to request a change in your nonimmigrant status to another category through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). While you are in the United States, receiving a change of status from USCIS does not require you to apply for a new visa.  However, once you depart the United States you must apply for a new visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the appropriate category for your travel.

Additional Information

• An individual on a visitor visa (B1/B2) is not permitted to accept employment or work in the United States.
• There is no guarantee you will be issued a visa. Do not make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa.
• A valid U.S. visa in an expired passport is still valid. Unless canceled or revoked, a visa is valid until its expiration date. If you have a valid visa in your expired passport, do not remove it from your expired passport. You may use your valid visa in your expired passport along with a new valid passport for travel and admission to the United States. 

Travel for Medical Treatment

If you are seeking medical treatment in the United States, the consular officer may ask for further documents at your visa interview, which may include:

• Medical diagnosis from a local physician, explaining the nature of the ailment and the reason you need treatment in the United States.
• Letter from a physician or medical facility in the United States, stating they are willing to treat your specific ailment and detailing the projected length and cost of treatment (including doctors’ fees, hospitalization fees, and all medical-related expenses).
• Proof that your transportation, medical, and living expenses in the United States will be paid. This may be in the form of bank or other statements of income/savings or certified copies of income tax returns (either yours or the person or organization paying for your treatment).

Visitor Visas for Personal or Domestic Employees (B-1)

You may apply for a B-1 visitor visa to work in the United States as a personal or domestic employee for your employer in limited situations. You may for a visitor visa as a domestic employee if, among other requirements, your employer is:

• A U.S. citizen who has a permanent home or is stationed in a foreign country, but is visiting or is assigned to the United States temporarily; or
• A foreign citizen who is in the United States on one of the following nonimmigrant visa categories:  B, E, F, H, I, J, L, M, O, P, Q or TN.

Visa Renewal

Whether you are applying for the first time or renewing your visa, you will use the same application process (please review How to Apply , above). Some applicants seeking to renew their visas in certain visa classes may be eligible for the Interview Waiver (IW) which allows qualified individuals to apply for visa renewals without being interviewed in person by a U.S. consular officer. Review the instructions on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply to determine if IW is available and if you qualify.

Do I need a visa if I have an ABTC?

Yes, you will still need a visa to travel to the United States, unless you qualify for the  Visa Waiver Program . Having an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC) does not change visa requirements, your visa status, or the visa process for travel to the United States.

How can I use my ABTC when I apply for my visa?

If you have an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC), you might be able to schedule an expedited visa interview appointment. Review the instructions for scheduling expedited appointments on the website of the  embassy or consulate  where you will apply. 

Visa Annotations for Certain Maritime Industry Workers

Certain foreign maritime workers are eligible to apply for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) once in the U.S. If you, as a maritime industry worker, will perform services in secure port areas, your visa must be annotated “TWIC Letter Received.” Workers whose visas are not annotated will not be permitted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to apply for a TWIC.

In order for your visa to be annotated, you must obtain a letter from your employer explaining the need for a TWIC and that you are a potential TWIC applicant. See a template example of this letter. You must present this letter when you apply for the B-1 visa. You must meet all other eligibility requirements for a B-1 visa.

Misrepresentation or Fraud

Attempting to obtain a visa by the willful misrepresentation of a material fact, or fraud, may result in the permanent refusal of a visa or denial of entry into the United States.

Citizens of China

In accordance with the agreement signed between the United States and China to extend visa validity, beginning on November 29, 2016, Chinese citizens with 10-year B1, B2 or B1/B2 visas in Peoples’ Republic of China passports will be required to update their biographical and other information from their visa application via a website every two years, or upon getting a new passport or B1, B2, or B1/B2 visa, whichever occurs first.  This mechanism is called EVUS - Electronic Visa Update System.

The EVUS website is now open to the public for enrollments at www.EVUS.gov .  CBP will not collect a fee for EVUS enrollment at this time. CBP anticipates the eventual implementation of an EVUS enrollment fee, but does not have a time frame. Until the implementation of a fee, travelers can enroll in EVUS without charge.  The Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will keep visa holders informed of new information throughout the year. Citizens of Mexico

Citizens and permanent residents of Mexico generally must have a nonimmigrant visa or Border Crossing Card (also known as a "Laser Visa"). Visa Waiver Program  (VWP)

Tourist or business travelers who are citizens of participating countries may be eligible to visit the United States without a visa. Visits must be 90 days or less, and travelers must meet all requirements.

Sample answers to common questions during the US tourist visa interview are given here. The exact questions may vary, but this article can give you some idea of what to expect during the visitor visa interview.

Q: Why do you want to travel to the USA?

A:  For tourism purposes and to visit our son/daughter.  We want to visit places such as Niagara Falls, Chicago, Detroit, and Pittsburgh. These are within a driveable distance from our daughter’s town. If possible, we will also like to visit Las Vegas and California. ( Change your answer accordingly. )

Q: Why do you want to visit only at this time?

A: Our son/daughter has arranged for his/her leave from work during that time frame. We are planning to visit the US in the summer months when the weather will be good for tourism. Also, we want to visit the US before we get old, so that we can enjoy all the tourist places fully.

If planning to visit during the winter months, you can say you would like to experience fall colors, snow, celebrate Christmas and New Year in the US, etc.

Q: How long will you stay in the US?

A:  X number of months.

Q: Why do you want a 6-month visa? Can’t you finish your trip in a shorter time?

A: The US is a large country and there is a lot to see. At an old age, we can’t visit many places in a hurry. Moreover, our son/daughter can not take leave from work for a long period at one time. We would like to experience different seasons in the US and also spend some time with our son/daughter and their family. We want to see fall colors/snow or celebrate Christmas, Independence Day (fireworks), New Year, etc. in the US However, a shorter visa would also be acceptable if you feel that is appropriate.

Q: Where will you stay in the US?

A:  At XYZ street, city, state, zip. Memorize the address and make sure it is the same as the one you provided in your visa application.

Q: How much do you expect this trip to cost?

A:  My son/daughter is going to take care of all the expenses. Be prepared to show all the  sponsor documents .

Sponsor and relatives in USA

Q: Who is sponsoring you?

A:  Our son/daughter.

Q: Is your son/daughter married?

A:  Yes/No.

Q: Does your son/daughter have any children?

Q: Is your daughter/daughter-in-law currently pregnant?

A:  Yes/No/I don’t know. Be truthful.

Q: What is your daughter’s birth date?

A:  XYZ

Q: What is your son-in-law’s birth date?

Q: What is the date of your daughter’s wedding anniversary?

A:  XYZ. It may be helpful to have some wedding photographs handy.

Q: What will you do at home when your daughter and son-in-law go out to work?

A:  Our daughter doesn’t work as she is on an H4 visa (not allowed to work). She has a car of her own and we plan to drive around to visit nearby places.

Q: What does your daughter do?

A:  Our daughter is a home-maker.

Q: What does your son-in-law do?

A: He is a mechanical engineer working for a mechanical engineering software company named, XYZ, in XYZ city, XYZ state. Be prepared to show proof of employment and other financial papers just in case.

Q: Where does your daughter and son-in-law stay in the US?

A:  XYZ city, XYZ state. Memorize the names of the towns thoroughly – this is the primary place you will be visiting in the US, so you should know its name properly. You don’t have to tell the complete address, just the city and the state.

Q: Can I have the contact details of your son/daughter?

A:  Provide the phone number and email address. Memorize them. Make sure they are the same as the ones in the visa documents.

Q: How long has it been since the last time you met your daughter?

A:  This is an important question and should be answered carefully and confidently as per the reality of your case. 

Answer for a special case is shown here:  Answer: Our daughter is currently here, visiting us and her other relatives. We would like to travel with her to the US She will be taking us around the US for sightseeing. Then after a few months, the two of us will return to our home country while our daughter will continue to stay there with her husband. We have never traveled internationally before, and it will be much more comfortable for us to travel in our daughter’s company.

Q: Do you have relatives in the US? Who are they?

A: Yes/No. Our son/daughter is there. Don’t reveal the details of other relatives unless asked first.

Q: How long has your son/daughter been in the US?

A: For X number of years.

Q: What is the legal status (What visa) of your son/daughter?

A:  My son is on an H1 visa, my daughter-in-law is on an H4 visa (Or daughter is on an H1 visa, son-in-law is on an H4 visa etc.)  My son/daughter is a green card holder.  My son/daughter is a US citizen.  Be prepared to show proof of their legal status.

Q: Did your son/daughter study in the US? When/Where/What?

A: Yes/No. If yes, be prepared with details such as the time, university, major, etc.

Q: When your son/daughter went to the US for the first time, what visa did they enter on?

A:  Answer truthfully.

Q: How much does your son/daughter earn per year?

A:  $xx,xxx per year. Be prepared to show financial documents such as an employment letter, pay stubs, and income tax returns to support this.

Q: Where does your son/daughter work?

A:  At XYZ. Memorize the name of the company.

Q: If your son/daughter is studying, who is paying for it?

A:  He/She is paying himself/herself for all the expenses. Additionally, he/she is in the condition to pay for all the expenses for our visit as well. Be prepared to show proof.

Q: When does your son/daughter plan to visit you here next time?

A:  They don’t have any fixed plan currently. Maybe next year or the year after that. (If you say the same year, the consulate officer may argue that you don’t need to go to the US if they are already coming to your home country to visit you.)

Q: Do you have any close relatives in the US?

Q: Has anyone filed the green card petition for you?

A:  Yes/No

Travel, Air tickets, Insurance

Q: Have you booked airline tickets?

Q: Have you been to the US before?

Q: Have you ever traveled internationally before?

Q: When you visited the US before, how long did you stay?

A: Answer truthfully.

Q: When you visited the US before, did you extend your stay? Can I see the extension approval letter?

A:  Yes/No. If you applied for a visitor visa extension, show the  proof of the extension (I-797, Notice of Action) . If you left the US before your extension got approved, and if your extension was rejected, show the proof that you filed for an extension before your I-94 expired and that you left before the extension was rejected.

Q: Will your wife/husband accompany you on your trip?

A: Answer truthfully. If only you are planning to visit, be prepared for the answer to why. If you are a widow/widower, answer accordingly. Other reasons could be: too busy with business, can’t get enough days off of work to go to the US, need to take care of the family, etc.

Q: When do you plan to travel?

A:  In the month of XYZ.

Q: Have you bought your airline tickets?

A:  I will buy (our son/daughter will buy) them once we get the visa.

Q: Have you purchased visitor medical insurance?

A:  I will buy (our son/daughter will buy) it once we get the visa.

Q: Do you have a credit card?

A:  Yes/No. If you have it, show it.

Q: What do you do here?

A: Answer truthfully.  e.g.,  I am retired. I am in the business of XYZ. I work at XYZ.

Q: Who will take care of your business when you are visiting the US?

A:  My partner (or son or someone else) will look after it until I return.

Q: Could you please show me your visiting card (business card)?

A:  If you are employed or have a business, show the card. If you are retired or don’t have the card, answer accordingly.

Q: If you are working, how will you go to the US for six months?

A:  I have accumulated leave over the past several years. Show the leave approval letter.

Q: Can I see your leave approval?

A:  If you are employed, show the leave approval letter. Otherwise, answer accordingly.

Q: When did you retire?

A: Answer truthfully.  E.g., in March 1999.

Q: How much pension do you get?

A: Answer truthfully.  e.g., Rs. 21,000 per month.  Also, show the pension book.

Q: What is your annual income?

A: Answer truthfully. Be prepared to show proof such as a pay check, income tax return, etc. Avoid using the unit, lakh. Instead say one hundred thousand.

Q:  Your income is not enough to support your travel to the USA. How will you pay for it?

A:  My son/daughter/son-in-law/daughter-in-law is sponsoring the trip. They will take care of all the expenses during the trip.  Be prepared to show the documents mentioned in the  sponsor documents  that your sponsor has sent you.

Q: Will you work in the US?

A:  No, I am going there for tourism.

Q: Will you do business in the US?

Q: What will you do on your return?

A:  Answer accordingly.

Q: Will you come back after your visit?

A:  Yes, we definitely will.

Q: How can you assure me that you will come back?

A:  All our relatives, including our only other daughter and our only grandchild are here. Also, our elderly mother who is partially dependent on us is here. We own two bungalows and a shop in XYZ city. We have a large amount of money in our bank balance. I also run an engineering consultancy business with a partner. (Show documents for all these.)

Q: What property do you have here?

A:  Mention whatever you have (e.g., we have a house/flat/shop etc.). Be prepared to show viable proof of those properties.

Q: Who will take care of your property when you are away from home?

A:  We have made arrangements with friends/relatives to take care of them while we are away.  My other son will be taking care of it while we are away.

Q: How many children do you have?

A: Answer accordingly. Stress upon the children you have in your home country and also if they have grandchildren, be sure to mention them. It would also be good to carry a few family photos proving that.

Q: What relatives do you have in India?

A: Answer accordingly. If applicable, it would be good to mention the relatives who are dependent upon you, such as old parents, etc. This would further strengthen your case that you will indeed return to your home country.

Q: Where do you stay here (in your country)?

A:  Tell the complete address.

Q: Do you pay income tax?

A: State truthfully.

Q: Are you going to the US for any terrorist activity?

A:  No.

Q: Who lives with you currently and what do they do?

Q: How many siblings do you have? Where do they live? What do they do? How many children do they have?

Q: Do you have a car?

Q: How many servants do you have?

Q: Who will take care of your house when you are away?

US tourist visa: Requirements and application procedure

US tourist visa requirements are clear and detailed. US visa application is a multi-step process. The first step of the application process is to fill DS-160 form online. The second step is to schedule the visa interview appointment. This step involves paying the visa fee and picking the location and date of your visa interview.

Visa interview is mandatory so it can be intimidating for some. If you have a genuine reason to visit the US along with relevant data and documentation, the odds of visa approval are high.

US TOURIST VISA APPLICATION PROCESS

Validity of US tourist visa

The validity of US visas depends on the country of passport. US tourist visas are usually issued for 1 year, 5 years or 10 years.

Example: The B1/B2 or B2 visas for Afghanistan passport holders are valid for 1 year only. Whereas, for Bangladesh passport holders, the B1/B2 visas are valid for 5 years. For Indian passport holders, B1/B2 visas are valid for 10 years.

When to apply for US tourist visa

You can apply for US tourist visa as early as you can. Unlike, other country visas, US visa can be applied as early as you. I have seen some readers apply as much as 1 year in advance.

How long can your stay in the US

The US tourist visa allows you to stay up to 180 days in the US. But if you stay that long continuously in the US on a tourist visa, you will have trouble entering the US again. You may be questioned on your purpose of visit.

US tourist visa processing time

Unlike other country visas, US visa has no processing time. Meaning, the visa officer will tell your visa result at the end of your interview. You will be able to pick up or receive your passport within 3-10 business days from your interview day.

• Schedule visa interview appointment

I recommend starting your application process as early as possible.

2. Schedule US visa appointment

The second step in the visa application process is to schedule US visa appointment . This involves paying the visa fee, and selecting the location and date of your interview.

Depending on the country where you would like to attend your visa interview, you would need to schedule one or two appointments. Some countries require an additional appointment for fingerprints and photos.

The website and the procedure to schedule US visa appointment is different in different countries.

If you are attending your US visa interview in Asia, Central America, parts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, you must schedule your appointment on the US Travel Docs website.

If you plan to attend your US visa interview in North and South America, parts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, you must schedule your appointment on the US Visa Information and Appointment System .

2.1. Pay US tourist visa fee

The US visa application fee is $160 payable in US dollars or local currency (in Asia only). You can pay your visa fee in various ways, such as cash at a local bank, electronic fund transfer or using a credit card.

3.5. Dos and Don’ts of the Appointment

• Arrive on Time: The time of your appointment is the time to arrive at the gate of the embassy. It is NOT the time of your actual interview. You must arrive not more than 15 min before your appointment time. Otherwise, you will be sent back and asked to arrive at your appointment time.
• No Electronics: Only a cell phone and keyfob are allowed into the embassy. Any other electronics such as tablets, laptops, etc. are not allowed into the embassy and you will be sent back.
• No Bags: Backpacks and luggage are not allowed into the embassy. The embassy will not store any bags and you will be sent back.
• No Non-permitted Items: Non-permitted items such as cigarettes, lighter, sharp objects, food items, etc are not allowed. You will have to discard them or you will be sent back.
• Carry Documents: You can only carry documents in a see-through folder or plastic bag.

3.6. Dos and Don’ts of the Interview

• Be honest: Visa officers are very well-trained and have years of experience. They see thousands of applicants in their careers. They can easily spot lies and manipulative answers. Be honest in your answers.
• Be confident: Stand straight. Be loud and clear. Ask the visa officer to repeat the question if you did not understand. Don’t change your answers if you are asked to repeat them.
• Don’t show desperation: Don’t show any signs of desperation. Visa officers are very well-trained and have years of experience. They can easily spot desperation.
• Say only what’s needed: Answer only with the information needed. Say what is needed, nothing else. Any extra information can lead to unnecessary questions that you may not have answers for.
• Be fluent in your English: This is a tricky one. Visa officers will not have much time and they can be impatient at times. If your answers are not clear and difficult to understand, it can impact your visa result. Improve your English speaking skills. Get rid of any accent if you have.
• Carry all relevant documentation: Make sure you have all the documentation with you. There should not be a situation where you don’t have a document that you are asked to present.
• Organize your documentation: Organize your documents in a smart way, so you can retrieve them right away when asked. Shuffling through the documents, taking too long to retrieve a document, and mishandling documents can affect your visa result.
• Dress appropriately: Dressing appropriately makes you presentable. It boosts your confidence as well.
• Choose your visa officer: Last but not least. If you have the opportunity to choose your visa officer, go to a visa officer who looks friendly and close to the same age as yours.

3.7. US tourist visa interview questions

During the US B1/B2 visa interview, you will be asked a few questions. These questions can be the same as what you already have in your DS-160 or completely different.

Each above question can lead to many other questions depending on your answers. For example, “What do you do for a living” can lead to questions such as how long you have been working, how much money you make, etc.

3.8. Visa Result

You will be told the result of the visa at the end of the interview. Therefore, at the end of the interview, you will know whether your visa is approved or denied or needs additional information.

If approved, you will be told that your visa is approved. You will be given a sheet of paper with instructions on how to pick up your passport or when to expect the delivery.

If denied, you will be told that your visa is denied. Your passport and documentation will be returned back to you. You will also be given a sheet of paper marking the section under which your visa application was denied.

If the visa officer needs additional information, you will be given a sheet of paper with details and the steps to continue from there.

4. Pick up Passport

If your visa is approved, your passport will be ready for pick up within 3-10 working days. You will be notified via email or SMS that your passport is ready for pickup.

If you have requested for your passport to be delivered, you will be notified via email or SMS when the passport is dispatched. You should receive it in 3-10 working days.

After you pick up or receive your passport, verify your visa for any discrepancies. If you see any discrepancy, contact the consulate/embassy immediately.

Get ready for your US trip. US tourist visas are usually valid for 10 years and multiple entries. You can travel to the US anytime within the validity of your US visa. You can also enter as many times as you want.

Port of entry in US airports usually has two lines for arriving passengers. One for citizens and permanent residents and the other for visitors. You will go and stand in the visitor’s line. When your turn comes, you will be sent to either an automated kiosk or to an immigration officer.

If you are sent to an automated kiosk, just follow the instructions on the screen. You will scan your visa page and your details will appear on the screen. Review the details. Go through the steps and print your receipt.

Once you print your receipt, proceed toward an immigration officer. Present your passport and receipt.

You may be asked a few questions. Your passport will then be stamped with the appropriate visa type and the date until which you can remain in the US. Your passport and receipt will be returned back to you.

If you are sent to an immigration officer instead of an automated kiosk, just present your passport, boarding pass and completed customs form.

If you are asked to scan your baggage, continue to the baggage scanning area and put all your baggage on the scanner conveyer belt. Pick up your bags after the scan and walk towards the exit.

• Legally Separated
• Birthdate – Date – Month – Year Format, if you are not sure, follow what is in your passport

• Double-check this; you are not typing your home address or current address but your place of birth.

Click Next, if you want to stop, you can click save your DS-160 Form. PS If you choose “Save,” it will automatically exit to the main portal.

Personal Information 2

• Nationality
• If you have another nationality besides the first one, click yes and choose the country and answer the question if you have another passport or not. Type the passport number, too.
• If you are a permanent resident of another country, check yes, and select the country or region. If there’s none, click No.
• Type your National Identification Number, your US Social Security Number, and US Taxpayer ID Number; if it does not apply to you, check the boxes.

Travel Information

• Choose what your purpose in visiting the US is; you can choose more than one. Tourism – choose “Temp. Business Pleasure Visitor (B)” or  “Business or Tourism – B1/B2” or “Tourism or Medical Tournament – B2”
• Enter your Intended Date of Arrival (Date – Month – Year Format) and Intended Length of Stay. If you are not yet sure when you are going or how many days, please estimate.
• Address in the US – Use your relative’s or the hotel you plant to book
• Person or Entity Paying – Self, Other Person, Present Employer, Employer in the US, or other Company or Organization

Travel Companions

• Answer if you have other persons traveling with you (family, friends, tour group, etc.)
• For those in a tour group, enter the name of the group or organization, if not, then type the names of those you are traveling with and your relationship with them (you can add more than one)

Previous US Travel Information

• If it’s your first time in the US, choose “No”
• If you have, then answer the questions like Previous dates and lengths of stay of your visit
• Enter your US Driver’s license in case you have one
• If you were issued a US Visa before, answer the next questions
• Type the date your last US Visa that was issued to you and the Visa Number (8-digit number in the lower right of your visa or 12-digit number of your Border Crossing Card)
• Answer if it’s the same type of visa or a new type (like B1/B2)
• The next question will be about the country or location where you applied for a visa (if it’s the same or not)
• Have you got all of your ten-fingerprints were taken from you? If it were only two fingerprints, answer no
• US Visa has been lost /stolen or canceled/revoked
• US Visa refusal, refused admission, or withdrawn application at the port
• Petition for US Citizenship and Immigration on your behalf

Address and Phone Information

• Home address
• Mailing address (if different from home)
• Primary Phone Number (also secondary and work contact number)
• E-Mail Address
• Social Media Presence – e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

Passport Information

• Type of your Passport – Be it regular, official, etc.
• Passport number (Valid)
• Passport book number – it is a control number of your passport, and some countries may have it while some may not. If it does not apply, check the box.
• Place of Issuance
• Issuance and Expiration Date (it must be at least 6 months valid beyond your arrival in USA, if not you may need to renew your passport)
• If you have lost or have your passport stolen (to know in case someone pretended to be you with your lost passport)

US Point of Contact Information

• Contact person or organization in the US that can verify your identity (you can check “Do Not Know”)
• Relationship to you
• Address and Contact Info in the US

Family Information: Relatives

• Full Name and Date of Birth of both your Father and Mother. If you don’t know your mom or dad, it’s okay; there is an option to check “Do Not Know.”
• Is your Father and/or Mother is in the US? If you answer, yes, you will be asked what their status is in the US? Citizen, Permanent Resident, Non-immigrant, or you don’t know.
• Immediate relative (spouse, fiancé, child, or sibling in the US.) – enter their names, your relationship with them, and their status
• Other relatives in the US

Present Work / Education / Training Information

• Primary occupation
• Company or School Name
• Address, your start date and monthly income in Local Currency
• If you are unemployed or a student, you may click “Does Not Apply” on Monthly income
• Work Description

Security and Background

Answer Yes or No. If you answer “Yes,” you must put in an explanation. Though it doesn’t mean if you answered “Yes,” you will be denied a visa, but you need to explain properly or have an interview at the consular office.

STEP 5: Upload your Photo. The cropping tool will help you in the dimensions.

• There’s a cropping tool to help you
• Colored and recently taken (3 months) with white background
• Full face with a neutral expression
• Normal clothing and no headwear (except if you are a religious person or need to wear it every day)
• No eyeglasses

Bring a 5cm x 5cm photo (the same as the one you uploaded) on your interview.

STEP 6: Double-check your application.

STEP 7: Sign, submit, and go to confirmation to complete the process.

STEP 8: Print or e-mail the confirmation page and bring it during the interview. You can use the barcode to make an appointment.

Hello question po about DS-160. I have completed the form and gotten my confirmation page. But I later realized that I failed to include my middle name in the Given Name field.

Can I fill out a new DS-160 form and use that instead? Will they not question the two DS-160 forms I submmitted online? (Note: This is for renewal and I have not yet entered my details in their login site where we input the DS-160 and Payment Receipt Number) .

Im working and at the same time nagmamasters ako.

sa DS 160 hindi ko maenter both yung work at school ko.

Pag ang present work ko nilalagay wala ng option para dun sa school ko now. Previous school ko na lang ang pwede ko ideclare sa DS160.

Pag yung school ko naman ang ilalagay ko. Walang option para ilagay yung present employer.
