Frequently asked questions about KAYAK
How do i find travel deals on kayak.
Simply use one of our travel search engines to scan for prices gathered from hundreds of travel sites. KAYAK’s search results pages have loads of filter options to help you find deals, discover exactly what you’re looking for and make booking seamless. Plus, there’s no extra fee from KAYAK.
What makes KAYAK a great travel app?
On the KAYAK app for iOS and Android you’ll find all the great travel offers found on the website and much more. There are special mobile rates and app only deals that allow you to save even more money. Plus, you can get notifications straight to your phone letting you know when prices for your next trip have dropped. But the KAYAK app is much more than just a travel app. Use the Trips function to manage your travel itinerary and get up to date status alerts on flights, check-in changes and to store your boarding pass. Even if you’re in the middle of nowhere on your travels, you can still access your travel notes via Trips, as no internet connection is required.
How can I use KAYAK to manage my travel bookings?
KAYAK Trips creates a travel itinerary for you that will give you flight status alerts, can be shared with friends and more. Simply forward your booking confirmations to [email protected] or use the KAYAK app and sync your email account to keep all your travel plans organized in one app, even if you didn’t book with KAYAK. You can share your holiday plans with friends and family and also check out your travel stats for past vacations, like how far you’ve traveled, your most popular cities and how many times you’ve traveled around the world. Even if you don’t have signal, don’t worry, as you can access Trips to check out your itineraries whilst on the road. Your data is safe and secure with us and you won’t have to re-enter credit card info when booking future trips. If you want to make changes or cancel bookings, then you should contact the travel provider, which is provided on the booking confirmation.
What are KAYAK Price Alerts?
Instead of manually checking back in on the price of your next flight or stay, let KAYAK do the hard work for you with KAYAK Price Alerts. Once you’ve saved your search, our data will determine how the price will rise or fluctuate over the coming days. You’ll then get a push notification letting you know when’s the perfect time to book.
Search flights , hotels , rental cars , travel guides and more with KAYAK. KAYAK searches hundreds of other travel sites at once to get you the information you need to make the right decisions.

Budget travel 'bikepacking' the way to affordable family holiday adventures
ABC Gold Coast
Topic: Travel and Tourism (Lifestyle and Leisure)

A cheap family holiday that keeps you fit and reconnects you with nature sounds too good to be true, but for Isaac Vitesnik and his family, "bikepacking" is a way of life.
The 42-year-old from Northern NSW recently spent the school holidays cycling 400 kilometres with his partner Natasha Kasselis, 37, and their two children, aged 10 and 13, around the Gold Coast.
The nine-day adventure cost the family of four less than $230 a day.
Mr Vitesnik said their free-camping cycle tours can cost as little as $100 per day, with food the primary expense, but that a few nights paid accommodation added to the bill this time.

Free camping means staying the night in a place that isn't an official campground or holiday park.
As the cost-of-living crisis continues to bite, Mr Vitesnik wants to spread the word for other families to take up "bikepacking" as a fun, sustainable and affordable school holiday activity.
The journey
Setting out from their home in Girards Hill in Lismore, Mr Vitsenik and his family spent three days travelling about 150km to a rainforest retreat at Lamington National Park in the Gold Coast Hinterland, free-camping along the way.
After a three-day stay at the top of the mountain in paid accommodation, the family then spent another three days cycling home.

“Part of the adventure of cycle touring is to find good little camp spots in nooks and crannies along beaches or rivers so we can have a swim,” Mr Vitesnik said.
“We leave no trace whatsoever, wherever we can. We do no damage, leave no rubbish, we have no footprint and tread lightly – that’s our free-camping policy.”
While Mr Vitesnik towed 10-year-old daughter Lana in a bike trailer, Ms Kasselis carried the food and equipment, and 13-year-old Elijah rode by himself for the first time.

The family carry a camp stove for cooking, use public toilets and stop for regular breaks to rest and sight-see.
“There is a lot of second-hand gear out there, and if you really wanted to do it, you could do it on the cheap … over 15 years we've put together our set-up,” Mr Vitesnik said.
“You just need to get a bike that won’t break down every day, and you can get a decent one for a few hundred dollars – it’s not hard to put a rack on it or a couple of panniers and you’re away.”
This is the sixth bikepacking trip the family has done.

Mr Vitesnik said the low cost of cycle holidays had allowed them to explore huge swathes of the country, from Uluru to the Blue Mountains.
He said the online non-profit cycle touring exchange service Warm Showers is a great way to find hosts to stay with.
“We host cycle tourists when they come through Lismore, and anywhere in the world you can get a bed or a shower or a place to put your camp … it’s a great resource.”

Realities of life on the road
With road safety a priority, Mr Vitesnik said planning your cycling routes beforehand and making sure all riders were as visible as possible was essential.
"Every single time before we leave, there is just a little bit of … 'are we going to be safe?’" he said.
"Because we do our best to be safe, but it's also up to drivers to watch out for us ... so there is a degree of faith."
Mr Vitesnik said on busy roads or blind shoulders, the family walk their bikes to make sure everyone is safe.

Matthew Burke from Griffith University’s Cities Research Institute, an avid cyclist himself, encourages families to practice cycling together on less-busy suburban roads before venturing to highways.
“If you've got a large family, act like a bicycle train — have an adult driver at the front and an adult guard at the back,” he said.
“That way you can see if the children are starting to maybe get a bit tired and get a bit wobbly and you can provide some gentle correction and just make sure everyone stays safe.
“One of the pieces of equipment I would personally invest in is little rear-vision mirrors that can be attached to handlebars ... that way you can see if traffic, particularly now electric vehicles aren't as loud, is coming up behind you.”

Professor Burke said starting off on rail trails or mass rides can help families gain confidence, and children learn safe cycling behaviour.
Budgets tightening
Daniel Gschwind from Griffith University’s Institute for Tourism said travel habits have changed in recent years due to the cost-of-living crisis, particularly among young families.
“They’re certainly looking at how to make their dollar go a little bit further,” he said.
“They’re spending a bit less on fancy accommodation, going to restaurants a bit less, or choosing cheaper restaurant options.”
Daniel Gschwind says travel is a "very strong driver of the human mind". ( ABC News: Brendan Mounter )
Mr Gschwind said more and more travellers are avoiding costly day trips and tours while on holiday.
“For instance, we can see that reef operators in North Queensland, they’re struggling a bit because people are a bit reluctant to spend money on those day tour activities and are perhaps creating their own fun instead,” he said.
Despite this, Professor Gschwind isn’t surprised Australians are continuing to prioritise travel, particularly during school holidays.
“That desire to travel and experience things is certainly still a very strong driver of the human mind,” he said.
A slower pace
The latest data from a Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) survey shows that road travel is the most popular way of getting around the Sunshine State, with 57 per cent of visitors intending to travel by car.
The findings from the survey of more than 1,500 adult travellers last month shows that one in five (21 per cent) plan to visit Queensland this spring holiday period.
Queensland Tourism chief executive officer Patricia O’Callaghan. ( ABC News )
TEQ chief executive Patricia O'Callaghan said the research indicated that although families were tightening their belts, they still wanted to enjoy a break.
"They might not eat out as many times as they would have, or they’ll cut back on experiences when they’re in the destination," she said.

Planning to visit Grandma’s for Thanksgiving or spend Christmas in Rome? Holiday travel can be notoriously busy, expensive, and stressful, but the news isn’t all bad. There are still deals to be found, provided you shop carefully and plan ahead. Check out these 10 holiday travel tips and find some joy this holiday season.
Avoid Peak Travel Dates
At Thanksgiving, Wednesday is the critical outbound “avoid” day as a rule. Traveling on Thanksgiving Day is often a breeze and more affordable, and if you can fly home any day other than Sunday, you’ll likely pay less.
At Christmas and New Year’s, the peak holiday travel dates change each year depending on which days the holidays fall. You can generally guess which dates will be the most expensive for travel (consider which travel days would allow you to maximize long weekends without taking too many days off work — and that’s probably when everyone will want to go). For more information, see The 12 Best and Worst Days for Holiday Travel This Year .
Shop Around
Whether you’re using booking sites like Expedia or metasearch sites such as Skyscanner , comparison shopping has never been easier than it is right now. During holiday travel season, casting a wide net will help you understand all your options. Be as flexible as possible with dates and airports in order to get the best fares and schedule. Keep in mind that flying into or out of a smaller airport can make a big difference in your holiday travel experience, since smaller airports tend to have smaller crowds and shorter lines.

Plot Connections Carefully
When booking flights, check your search results carefully for sufficient time during layovers, and build in some time for flight delays and weather woes. Particularly during the winter months, peak travel times often bring travel delays, and your connections are more likely to be jeopardized. Avoiding tight connections might save you a sprint through the terminal or, worse yet, a missed flight.
Also, it’s best if you can muscle your flight path into position so that connections are in places less likely to experience delays—specifically, airports in warmer climates. Better yet, book a nonstop flight and avoid the issue altogether.
Leave Early
During peak travel times, much of the trouble you’ll face lies on this side of the security check-in, from traffic jams and full parking lots to absent shuttles and long lines. Rather than striving to “arrive at the airport early,” you may want to try to “leave for the airport early” to anticipate all the peripheral delays you may encounter.
Many flights are completely full around the holidays, so if you miss your scheduled flight due to a flat tire or unexpected traffic, it may not be easy to get on another flight in a reasonable amount of time.
Most airlines recommend checking in 90 minutes early for domestic flights and two hours early for international flights. For holiday travel, however, it’s wise to arrive even earlier. Expect to encounter long lines at check-in and security, and plan accordingly. To save yourself time, put gas in your car the night before.
The Ultimate Checklist for Traveling Abroad
Pack Wisely
Has it been a while since you last flew? If so, you’ll want to make sure you’re familiar with the latest TSA rules regarding what’s allowed in carry-on bags. See Airport Security Frequently Asked Questions for a primer. Remember that the TSA’s liquid and gel restrictions apply to items like holiday leftovers (think mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce) and to gifts such as wine or body lotion; prepare to put these in your checked bag.
When packing, keep in mind that most airlines charge travelers a fee for checking any bags on domestic flights (and even some international ones), and that some bargain-basement fares don’t include a carry-on bag either. Check your airline’s baggage rules in advance so you know what to expect.
Plan Ahead for Parking
Don’t assume that you’ll be able to pull right into your airport’s economy lot and find a space the day before Thanksgiving or Christmas. Airport parking lots may be vast, but they do fill up during peak travel times. Consider alternatives to driving yourself such as taking public transportation, booking a shuttle, calling a cab or rideshare, or having someone drop you off.
If those options don’t work, reserve a parking spot in advance through websites such as AirportParkingReservations.com or ParkRideFly .
Take Advantage of Shortcuts
The latest self-service developments in online travel can be tremendous time-savers during peak travel times. Whenever possible, print your boarding passes at home or pull them up on your smartphone. Consider applying for trusted traveler programs such as Global Entry or TSA PreCheck , which allow you to skip the normal security lines.
If you buy most of your gifts online, have them shipped directly to your destination. This will cut down on luggage and the risk of them getting lost . (If you do decide to pack your gifts, don’t wrap them; TSA agents will rip them open if they need to screen them for any reason.)
The 11 Best Stocking Stuffers for Travelers
Travel Early in the Day
As a rule, airports are least congested at times when normal human beings would rather be at home or even asleep. Delays are far less likely for morning flights, and if you do encounter an issue with your originally scheduled itinerary, you’ll have options later in the day.
Caveat: Staffing can be spotty for really early flights in addition to the ongoing staffing shortage facin g airlines . So although your flight is highly likely to be ready to leave on time, check-in may take a while, as may other personnel-dependent steps like riding shuttle buses.
Bring Some Creature Comforts
As if cramped legroom, narrow seats, and crying babies weren’t enough to guarantee an uncomfortable journey, some airlines are now taking away the free blankets that were the only thing standing between passengers and hypothermia. Stay warm on a chilly holiday flight by packing your own cozy pashmina , fleece , or travel blanket .
For longer flights, consider bringing items such as earplugs , noise-canceling headphones , and an eye mask to help you sleep. And don’t miss SmarterTravel’s list of the best travel podcasts to keep you entertained.
How to Find the Cheapest Flights (According to Google Flights Experts)
Keep Your Cool
Don’t lose your temper, even if things go wrong. Airline employees have considerable power over your well-being. Unfortunately, some enjoy wielding it against you, and few respond well to anger.
Remember that everyone is harried, and have a little extra patience. The crowds, the weather, and the stress of the holiday season guarantee that a good 90 percent of the people you interact with on your journey are just as frazzled as you are.
A Few Bonus Holiday Travel Tips
- Check ahead for delays before you leave for the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration has a map showing general delay status at major airports across the U.S. so you can see if trouble might be lurking, even if your scheduled flight is still on time.
- Have phone numbers for everything: your hotel, your car rental agency, your airline, friends at your destination.
- Give your cell phone a full charge, and download your airline’s app so you’ll get alerts if your flight is delayed or your gate changes.
- If you’re leaving pets at home and you haven’t made kennel reservations, do so right away. If Fluffy is coming along, make sure you know your airline’s and accommodation’s pet policies.
- While many places have lessened or lifted COVID-19 restrictions, there are still some destinations, public venues, and events that require masks or proof of vaccination. Make sure you’re prepared by keeping a copy of your vaccine card with your travel documents and have a stock of masks handy just in case.
Do I Need to Be Vaccinated to Fly?
Put It All Together
Holiday travel is the time to lay all your travel savvy on the line. For example, if you:
- have your boarding pass sent to your phone
- leave early enough not to sweat the small stuff
- travel light enough not to have to check any bags
- proceed directly to and through security
- arrive at the gate on time and at ease
- and nail your connections …
… you might actually enjoy traveling this season!

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
I challenged myself to take a £100 holiday – I came back with change
Share this with
‘You will know each other well after this!’
The restaurant host was gesturing to me and the two Italian students sitting opposite me at Oda Garden, a popular traditional restaurant in Albania ’s capital, Tirana.
The place gets booked up well in advance, but we had all managed to squeeze in – provided we didn’t mind sharing our space with strangers.
As soon as I arrived, I realised why it was such a hotspot. Amidst a courtyard crammed with tables, macramé parasols and lights strung up between lemon trees, people were up dancing to a live band pumping out Albanian classics.
It was one of those magical moments where I felt like I’d been dunked, head first, into the culture of a place.
And the best bit? My main meal only cost me £4.10. This was music to my ears given the fact I was halfway through my challenge to do a getaway for just £100 – and that included everything.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chelsea | Cheap Holiday Expert (@cheapholidayexp)
My name’s Chelsea Dickenson and I’m obsessed with the price of going on holiday .
I know I’m not the only one. I believe that in each and every family or friendship group , there’s a bargain obsessive, promo-code checking, spreadsheet-wielding individual who loves nothing more than saving money on their next trip.
It was this obsession that led me to do a holiday challenge back in 2017 where I took half the amount the average British person spends on holiday a year (which worked out at slightly under £2,000) and tried to do as many holidays as possible for the total and capture it all for my newly created YouTube channel.
How much does the average Brit spend on holiday?
- Research from VoucherCodes.co.uk forecast that Brits would spend £64.20billion on holidays in 2024
- This would mean that each person in the UK would spend £1,140 on average
- In the first half of 2020, Statista data found 26% or holidaymakers between 25-35 would spend between two and four thousand pounds, while 32% would spend between one and two thousand
- The same website found that UK travellers, on average, spent 8.7 nights on vacation in 2022, compared to 10.8 nights in 2021
That year, I ticked off 10 countries, on three continents, and I even flew business class.
The challenge kickstarted what is now my full-time career as a travel expert and content creator, posting advice and travel inspiration across my website, TV, print and radio, and to my 630k followers on social media.
For over a year, I’d had the idea to do a getaway for under £100 where the budget had to cover everything. That included: getting to and from the airport, flights, accommodation, food, drink and the activities.
With rising costs across Europe, it was more difficult than I’d first expected. Long gone are the endless lists of return flights under a tenner, and while Milan had looked like a credible contender, the price of accommodation had tipped things over the budget.
However, after spotting some £20 return flights to Tirana on the Wizz Air website back in April, my bargain-booking senses started to tingle. The £20 included all taxes and booking fees, though the flight out left at 7:45am in the morning and so I knew I was in for an early start.
The next thing I had to check were the transfers to and from the airports as this cost can quite often catch people out. Flying from Luton airport, I knew I could book a cheap National Express bus for just £6 each way and fortunately the airport bus to Tirana city centre came in at just £3.43 each way.
I felt I might be onto a winner.
However, it all depended on whether I could find somewhere nice to stay for the two nights. I knew it would probably have to be a hostel, but the cost of a bed in a shared room has massively increased across Europe in recent years due to the aftermath of the pandemic and an increase in boutique hostels.
Yet, Tirana came through once again with a bed in a well rated, boutique hostel for just £12.67 a night.
My final check was how much my food and drink would cost me. I had a look at the average cost of living on a site called Numbeo and browsed a few restaurant menus online. There were plenty of options where I could score dinner for under £6 and so I was confident the challenge was a-go.
So off I went. An overbooked coach to the airport nearly scuppered me at the first hurdle, but after another arrived 30 minutes later, giving me just enough time to whizz through security, I finally landed in the Albanian capital ready to put my budget to the test.
And what a place to do it!
I was bowled over by how green the city is, and how many food and drink restaurants there were to choose between. The latter is so important to many of us when choosing a destination, with 55% of people citing that the chance to explore local cuisine is a top travel motivator in Klarna’s recent Travel Report.
The good news is that even on a budget, I could still indulge. From 43p for a spinach byrek (a flakey, Albanian pastry) to £4.10 for fërgesë (a traditional dish of cottage cheese and peppers), I found it easy to pin down affordable food.
Culture is a priority to 28% of us as well, according to the Klarna report, and thanks to a free walking tour I found thanks to a simple google, I got to explore the city – leaving a small tip of £1.71 for the guide.
I also spent a wonderful couple of hours navigating the sprawling walkways of the 289 hectare Tirana Park and set up at a trendy cafe, Hana Corner Coffee, to work for a couple of hours – nursing a rather expensive £2.05 coffee! But it was worth it to watch the world go by on their gorgeous outdoor terrace.

I genuinely think it’s the most underrated city I’ve ever been to.
The total for my two-day trip came in at £99.59, proving that a £100 holiday can be done! And I do think having this firm budget really helps you stop extra costs for spiralling.
I found this on a six-night road trip to notoriously expensive Iceland back in March 2019, where I managed to cover absolutely everything – including the hire car and petrol – for just £600pp.
The biggest cost saver was on food and drink, since even a sandwich could cost over £10. Instead, we shopped exclusively at budget supermarkets and cooked in the kitchens of our cheap guesthouses. It also helped that the main reason many people go to Iceland is the free nature!

If you’re hoping to book a cheap trip of your own, I have some advice about what to do.
Here are the four things you need to do to book a cheap holiday:
- Firstly, flexibility. This isn’t just about your travel dates but the destination, too: less well-known destinations can often open up more affordable prices.
- Secondly, check all the costs first. Don’t get hung up on the price of flights as they’re just a one-off and you’re actually better paying more for them if your accommodation and daily costs are going to come in cheaper.
- You can also consider using services like Klarna to spread the cost of your trip interest-free, as long as you know you’ll be able to pay it all off in time. It’s available on loads of popular travel sites like Booking.com, Hotels.com, Airbnb and others.
- And finally, set a budget. It’s really easy to get carried away when you’re on holiday so why not make a budget challenge of your own?
Many believe that setting a budget can detract from a holiday, but in the case of Tirana, I found it really forced me to find local experiences off the beaten tourist track that actually enhanced my trip.
That, and the restaurant host was right! My predicament actually encouraged me to meet new people and form friendships with others I would have otherwise never had the chance to meet.
Later on this year, I intend to attempt another budget challenge in Korea. It’s not known to be the cheapest destination, but I can’t wait to discover what I can get for my money.
It will be hard to beat lunch for 43p, though!

Score a Free Companion Ticket to Bermuda with This Airline’s Promotion — What to Know
Travelers have until September 30 to take advantage of the deal.
Marc Guitard/GETTY IMAGES
Escaping to Bermuda for the holidays just got easier thanks to a new promotion from island-based carrier BermudAir giving away free companion tickets.
Travelers who book a BermudAir holiday package between now and Sept. 30 will receive a free second airfare with their purchase so they can bring a friend or loved one along, the airline told Travel + Leisure . The promotion is valid for travel through Dec. 15, but as a bonus, travelers who fly by Sept. 30 will also receive a complimentary business class upgrade with their ticket.
“We are excited to offer these savings and upgrades as a way to say thank you and to encourage visitors to enjoy Bermuda in the fall,” Adam Scott, the CEO and founder of BermudAir, said in a statement shared with T+L. “This initiative not only enhances the visitor experience but also supports our local tourism partners by driving more traffic to the island during a traditionally quieter period.”
The airline offers several holiday packages , including stays at some of the most popular and iconic properties on the island . A flight and 3-night stay at the historic Hamilton Princess, for example, starts at $1,500 per person, while a flight and 3-night stay at the luxurious Rosewood starts at $1‚750 per person.
In addition to the packages, BermudAir is offering an unlimited flight pass starting at $2,999 for travelers who purchase by Sept. 30 and fly between Sept. 15 and Dec. 15. Travelers must then reserve a flight up to 72 hours before departure.
Bermuda experiences mild daytime temperatures in the fall and winter, along with plenty of activities from golf to boating, but is not necessarily going to have the best swimming conditions that time of year.
BermudAir launched in 2023 with plans of operating an all-business class airline, but changed course and made economy seats permanent just a couple months later. The airline, which flies to Bermuda from several popular airports in the United States, operates a fleet of Embraer E175 aircraft and offers perks like complimentary onboard Wi-Fi and signature Bermuda cocktails like the Dark ‘n Stormy.
