RECOMMENDED: 101 things to do in Singapore and the best hiking trails in Singapore
Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
1. A Journey Across the Heartland
For a truly local experience, this four-hour tour will take you to a side of Singapore that is not commonly found in travel guides – the neighbourhoods where locals reside and spend a large part of their time engaging in an array of activities. This down-to-earth expedition begins in the local hood of Ang Mo Kio where you will explore bird singing, a little-known hobby that originated in the kampong (Malay for village) era. Thereafter, you will be led to a hawker centre where you will get to enjoy coffee and snacks like a local. The local exploration rounds up with a visit to the wet market where locals frequent for fresh produce.
For the second leg of this expedition, you will be taken to another neighbourhood – Toa Payoh, to see the famous “Tree Shrine” which the locals have been praying to for years. Finally, the tour concludes with a visit to a HDB show flat to learn more about the country’s HDB public housing programme. Prices start from $105 per person.
2. Everyday Secrets of Singapore Public Housing
This tour offers a fascinating glimpse into Singapore’s public housing, known as HDB estates. With more than 1 million flats spread across 24 towns and three estates, HDB flats make up an integral part of the city-state’s urban landscape. In fact, over 80% of Singapore’s resident population calls HDB flats home. This two-hour tour, covers three different types of public housing estates where you will get to see the evolution of HDB estate architecture over the years and learn the role it plays in Singapore’s multiculturalism.
At Everton – an estate with some of the earliest examples of public housing – you will get to try local coffee or tea and explore traditional stores that have stood the test of time.. The tour continues at Cantonment Estate, where a local guide will explain how public housing evolved through the years. The last stop is at one of the latest public housing projects in Singapore, Pinnacle @ Duxton, featuring a distinct and modern architectural style. Comprising seven 50-storey buildings, this development has earned the status as the world’s tallest public residential building. Along the way, you will also get to visit local markets and admire vibrant street art that showcases the culture and history of Singapore. Prices start from $100 per person.
3. Let’s Go Kelong by Let’s Go Tour
For those seeking a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city, this kelong tour offers the perfect opportunity to discover a different side of Singapore. Explore the city’s Northeastern waters on a catamaran and be greeted with an abundance of nature and mangrove swamps. During this three-hour idyllic boat tour, you will get fascinating insight into the sea channels and hear stories about Sembawang beach, the Orang Laut at Seletar Island and the neighbouring port of Pasir Gudang. Visitors will also get to explore Pulau Ubin, the only inhabited island out of Singapore’s 63 islands, and the surrounding islands. A particularly enjoyable part of the tour is the segment on sustainable fish farming, how it works and its challenges. The experience rounds up with a visit to a kelong restaurant, where visitors will get to experience life on a floating fish farm. Prices start from $135 per person.
4. Seadog Kayak Sailing Tour: Jungle Book
Water sports enthusiasts and adventure seekers will want to bookmark this unique tour experience which combines kayaking and sailing in one. The first of its kind in Singapore, this kayak sailing tour will take participants from mainland Singapore to the island of Pulau Ubin. Experience the thrills of navigating your way through a lush mangrove forest, home to a variety of wildlife including otters, monitor lizards and wild boars.
On this tour, you will be using kayaks that come with a sail and pedals, and depending on the wind conditions, you might get to use the sail a lot more if the wind picks up. If there is no wind, the kayak can still be powered by legs – you’ll just have to work a little harder. After a scenic and idyllic day out, your guide will take you to one of the traditional seaside houses in Ubin for a local seafood meal prepared with the freshest catch of the day like barramundi and mussels. Prices start from $189 per person.

Geography and environment.
Tiny Singapore occupies little more than a dot on the world map, although it's still not small enough to rate as one of the world's smallest. Located in South-East Asia on the southern end of the Malaysian Peninsula, most of Singapore is highly urbanized, with most residents living in flats and skyscrapers in built up areas. A small proportion (about 10%) of Singapore's land is dedicated to forests and agriculture, with the rest being considered developed, urban environments.
Best time to visit Singapore
Singapore has a typical tropical climate year round - hot and humid with equal amounts of sunshine and rain. The temperature range stays mostly in the 32 ° C (90 ° F) and rarely drops below 20 ° C (70 ° F) degrees at night. Although there are two monsoon seasons, rain is present year round, usually in the form of thunderstorms and short bursts of torrential rain. Thankfully the sun also shines year round - so although the weather can be unpredictable, the sun will usually prevail, making it the perfect vacation destination.
Top 5 food finds of Singapore
1. chili crab.
Singaporean Chili Crab could be considered one of the world's favorite dishes from this region. Invented back in 1950, chili crab can now be found everywhere in Singapore - from high-end restaurants to simple hawker stalls. A must try when on holiday in Singapore.
2. Fish-head curry
This aromatic, spicy dish with a South Indian and Chinese heritage features a whole red snapper stewed in coconut milk, tamarind juice, spices and chili. The strong flavor and presence of a whole fish head may turn some people off, but for those with a strong stomach and desire for heat in their food, you can't go past this curry.
3. Chicken rice
This Hainanese-style Singaporean stalwart is unofficially considered Singapore's national dish. Featuring poached or fried chicken and steamed rice with sides of chicken stock, soy, and chili, this is the ideal dish for those wanting simple flavors and ingredients done well.
4. Ice cream sandwich
Head to the mobile ice cream carts located along Orchard Road to find this indulgent sweet treat. Traditional flavors (like chocolate and strawberry) get a run alongside more exotic flavors (durian or sweet corn ice cream anyone?). This slice of creamy sugar wrapped in sweet bread is the perfect antidote to the steamy Singaporean climate.
5. Fried carrot cake
No, this dish isn't made by putting a sweet carrot cake in a deep fryer. Rather, it's a popular savory meal in Singapore also known as Chai Tow Kuay. And it just gets stranger when you consider that there are no carrots in this dish, but rather white radish, garlic, chili and coriander. Oddities aside, this street-food favorite is a cheap and easy meat-free meal, a top choice for vegetarian travelers.
Festivals and events
Public holidays that may impact travel include:.
Chinese New Year
Hari Raya Puasa

When I look back on the best things in my 2009 trip, it was a great adventure and it changed and challenged me. Some of the countries I visited were Iran, India and Tibet which were all amazing. I enjoyed the nights spent in bush camps with campfires and beers and the toiletries were prized possessions. I loved the tour and I am super excited for 2015.
I am lost for words on the experience I had. Over the the last six months that I travelled with Madventure, I saw amazing sights and did a lot of wonderful things. It was something I didn't thought I could afford as it was a good value for money. The crew were awesome, they were very professional and made me feel safe. Some days are tough but the experience was still very memorable not just because of the places but with the people that I get to share the experience with. Joining this tour was the most memorable time in my life.
We set off on a six months adventure last June 2014 after saving for two years visiting 27 countries. The trip was fun and it was everything that we hoped for. We were in a truck with other people who became like a family to us and shared with them experiences that lasts a lifetime. The crew were fantastic, especially the drivers Alan & Will who suffer long drive days while we sit in the back and the tour leader (Brenda) who was also awesome. I will definitely recommend this tour to anyone who wants to have an adventure and isn't afraid of getting dirty.

"This tour was meant to be a group tour and I was charged an extra supplement for having my own room. Turns out I was the only one on the tour and that this had been outsourced to yet another company called Embassey alliance.I only found this out a day before the tour, had no idea of who my point of contact was and also the itinerary did not match the initial tour. Expensive for what it is and I have complained. Plus note is that drivers and guides are good at their job shame about management.

5 of the Best Singapore Layover Tours from the Airport
Don’t just hang around in Changi Airport – a layover is a great opportunity to explore Singapore.
(Photo: Getyourguide.com)
Singapore’s Changi Airport is one of the busiest passenger hubs for Southeast Asia. Even though the airport itself is like a miniature city, with a multitude of shops and restaurants, flying through Changi is a great opportunity to visit Singapore during a layover. Singapore, an island state, is the smallest country in Southeast Asia – so a few hours is all that is needed to see the main sights. Here are five of the best Singapore layover tours from the airport.
Singapore: Airport/Seaport Meet & Greet + 4-Hours City Tour
This tour is a stress-free way to see Singapore in half a day and then return to the airport for your onward flight. The chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall with a sign and carries your bags to the private vehicle. You can choose what you want to see during the four-hour trip but recommended highlights include Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, Merlion Park, Chinatown, and Little India. The excursion included a 60-minute waiting time in arrivals, as well as parking fees and tolls – bottled water is thrown in free of charge too. From €287.84 per group up to three.

Singapore Layover Tour with a Local: 100% Personalized & Private
(Photo: Viator.com)
This is a full day, eight-hour tour, so not ideal for shorter layovers. If you have time, however, it makes good sense, exploring all aspects of Singapore. Instead of hanging out at the airport food court, you’ll be trying typical street food in a local hawker centre, before heading to Chinatown and the biggest sights of Singapore. The tour is completely customisable – just tell the local guide what you are interested in and let them do the rest. Pick-up from Changi Airport is included by taxi (max four passengers including your host). It’s worth noting that return transportation to the airport is not included. From €203.30.

Private Customised Singapore Airport Layover Tour By Car
This private tour ranges from four to eight hours to suit the length of your layover. The private vehicle picks you up from Changi Arrivals and whisks you into the city to visit a variety of different attractions. You can take a river cruise, head to the hawker centres or museums, visit Gardens by the Bay – or fit in all of the above if there is time. The itinerary is built around the interests of the group and everything is taken care of in advance. The local guide and a drop-off at the airport are also included in the price. From €359.98.
Private Singapore Airport Layover Walking Tour
This tour is four to six hours, depending on how much time you have before your onward flight, and includes a walking tour – a great way to stretch those legs in between aeroplanes. Swap the crowded airport terminal for the fresh air of Singapore, with a customised itinerary organised by a local guide. You’ll discover Singapore on foot and by public transit for a true sense of the city. The airport pick-up and the cost of public transport during the tour is included but not return transport, so you’ll need to grab a taxi. From €202.76.
Private Singapore City Tour and National Orchid Garden
This tour is only 3.5 hours long but does include a meet up at the airport – speak to the operator for details on getting back to the airport and what time is needed to see what you want to experience, so you don’t run out of time and miss your flight. The private local guide will take you to the city’s most noteworthy locations, including Merlion Park, Thian Hock Keng Temple, Little India, and National Orchid Garden. Transport is by air-conditioned vehicle and the operator promises that you can experience three main Singapore highlights in just a few hours. From €207.59.

Concert review: Stray Kids deliver explosive performance heavy on theatrics
Stray Kids World Tour Dominate Singapore
National Stadium Sept 28, 7pm
Their tour is titled Dominate, and Stray Kids did just that with their commanding presence, high energy and elaborate numbers that were heavy on theatrics in their one-night gig in Singapore.
Time magazine hailed the eight-member group as one of its Next Generation Leaders in 2023, while Rolling Stone UK called its September cover artistes the biggest band in the world right now.
Stray Kids – consisting of Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin and I.N – were at the top of their game as they entertained the 30,000-strong crowd at the National Stadium, the third K-pop act to perform there after juggernauts BTS and Blackpink.
They made their grand entrance at 7pm with Mountains (2024), bringing the crowd to a fever pitch.
The first track on their latest EP Ate (2024), the anthemic number was an ideal concert-opener, in which the members’ energetic performance was punctuated with pyrotechnics, dancing laser beams and sleek graphics on the video wall.
Deafening screams from the predominantly female audience continued to fill the arena as the group performed Thunderous (2021) and Jjam (2024).
Leader Bang Chan, 26, took on the role of emcee, introducing each member of the group, as well as the live band comprising a drummer, electric guitarist, bassist and keyboardist.
“Thank you, Singapore. We are very honoured to kick-start the Dominate world tour here,” said Bang Chan in a thick Australian accent. Fellow Australian Felix, 24, chimed in, saying that it was always good to be back in Singapore.
Their gig here followed four sold-out concerts at the KSPO Dome in Seoul in August.
The group previously performed at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in 2023 for their Maniac concert, as well as in 2019 at the Kamp Singapore music festival.
While Stray Kids are known for their flashy choreography, Dominate was an opportunity for each member to showcase his vocal prowess with unreleased solo numbers.
Han, 24, was the first soloist with pop number Hold My Hand, followed by 25-year-old Lee Know’s bubbly Youth. Seungmin, 24, slowed the tempo down by strumming along to acoustic ballad As We Are, which showed off his vocal range.
Hyunjin, 24, who elicited the loudest screams whenever he appeared on the video wall, rapped So Good dressed in custom Versace.
Felix’s solo number Unfair was high on drama. Togged in Louis Vuitton, he was lowered into the arena from the ceiling, as he crooned to a backdrop depicting the wilting rose from Disney’s animation Beauty And The Beast (1991).
The band regrouped for Chk Chk Boom, the catchy title track on Ate, which topped the Billboard 200 chart for five consecutive weeks. The heart-thumping song was clearly a favourite among Stay – Stray Kids’ fandom name – as the number became a massive sing-along session.
The octet’s dedication to delivering a good show was evident. With no breaks throughout the three-hour-long set, they executed each song’s physically demanding choreography with great aplomb.

Bang Chan delighted the crowd with banter, telling the Stay they had learnt a couple of Singlish words such as “alamak” and “aiyoh”. Changbin also declared his love for chilli crab, a favourite among South Korean artistes.
There was a sense of camaraderie as the band played pranks on one another on stage, such as when Seungmin poured a bottle of water down Felix’s back, or when the bandmates teased Bang Chan about his ripped torso when he took off his jacket during his solo item Railway.
Their bromance is one of Stray Kids’ charms, as professed by some Stay who surprised their idols with a video greeting. Visibly touched, Bang Chan thanked their fans for their devotion and promised that the group would continue to strive to do their best.
“This video is unexpected, and it really means a lot to us. We will be back, and this is our promise,” he said.
As the concert drew to a close, Stray Kids brought the house down with two encores, a reprise of Chk Chk Boom and the groovy I Like It (2024), which got everyone to their feet.
The latter was a favourite for 12-year-old Syarifah Sakinah, who attended the concert with her aunt.
A Bang Chan fan, Syarifah started following the group a few years ago and said the concert was a great “study break and a day off” from her revision for the Primary School Leaving Examination.
Student Elaine Toh, 17, was impressed by Bang Chan’s vocals, and commented that the solo segments “brought out their personal colour”.
Spaniard Isabel Pascasio, who became a Stay after she was introduced to My Pace in 2018, said she had always enjoyed Stray Kids’ choreography. “To be able to watch their live performance was amazing,” said the teacher.
Ms Pascasio, 31, also cited Bang Chan as her favourite member, saying he has a natural, confident flair.
Ms Seora Lee, 40, who attended the 2023 Maniac tour, said Dominate was a “big upgrade” with its 3D light effects. She said the group also levelled up on their choice of songs and how they used the stage.
The administrative officer added that she felt like she was in a huge club where everyone was singing and dancing together.
After the Singapore stop, Stray Kids will be performing at the 50th anniversary of the American Music Awards on Oct 6, before taking the Dominate tour Down Under on Oct 19, followed by 14 more shows in eight cities across Asia. The American and European legs of the tour have yet to be announced.

Francis will be only the second pope to visit Singapore, one of the wealthiest nations
Singapore was originally part of Francis’ travel plans to the region in 2020 but it was derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

When Pope Francis arrives Wednesday in Asia’s financial powerhouse Singapore for the last leg of a four-nation tour, he is expected to bring his message of unity and hope to one of the world’s richest nations.
The 11-day trip, which earlier took him to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and East Timor, is the longest for the 87-year-old pontiff since becoming head of the Catholic Church in 2013. Francis will be the second pope to visit Singapore, after a five-hour stopover by the late John Paul II in 1986.
Here’s what to know about Pope Francis' three-day stay in Singapore:

Why is Francis visiting Singapore?
The island city-state at the tip of the Malay peninsula has a small population of just under 6 million people and lacks natural resources, but it is a heavyweight in regional and international affairs. Astute leadership, its strategic location and reputation as one of the most open and least corrupt economies had transformed Singapore into a bustling financial giant and maritime and aviation hubs in just 59 years after independence.

Singapore is a strategic U.S. partner but also maintains close ties with China. Ethnic Chinese account for about three-quarters of its residents followed by minority Muslims and Indians.
According to a 2020 Singapore population census, Buddhists make up about 31%. About a fifth of the population claimed no religious belief, while Christians account for almost 19% and Muslims about 15%.
Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil, reflecting its multicultural identity and heritage.

“Singapore and the Holy See share a common interest in promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding. Pope Francis’ state visit is also the first papal visit to Singapore in almost 40 years,” Singapore’s Foreign Ministry said.
In a city ranked as one of the most expensive to live in, Singapore’s Cardinal WIlliam Goh said that key themes frequently emphasised by Francis such as human dignity, inclusiveness, interreligious dialogue, family values, the need to manage artificial intelligence responsibly and care for the environment were of particular relevance.
“As such, Pope Francis’ visit is highly anticipated and warmly welcomed not only by the Catholic faithful, but also by the wider society.” Goh said in a written response to The Associated Press. “After the apostolic visit is done, I pray that Singapore will be filled with hope — a profound, divine hope.”
What's on the pope's itinerary?
After flying in from Dili, East Timor, on Wednesday, Pope Francis will hold a private meeting with members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).
On Thursday, he will receive an official welcome at Parliament House and meet Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. He will also meet government officials, civil society and the diplomatic corps at the National University of Singapore.
The highlight will be a public Mass at the 55,000-seat National Stadium in the evening. Those attending include Catholics from neighboring Malaysia and Brunei. Francis will make a tour around the stadium pitch to greet the faithful in his Popemobile before delivering his homily.
On the last day, Francis will visit elderly residents at the St Theresa’s Home. He will also hold an interreligious meeting with youths at the Catholic Junior College.
How influential is the church in Singapore?
The church marked 200 years in Singapore in 2021. The Archdiocese of Singapore was formed in 1972, seven years after Singapore's independence. Diplomatic relations with the Holy See were established in 1981.
In Singapore’s early years, Cardinal Goh said the church’s work in education and health care were important contributors to national development.
“Many of the country’s top leaders in both the public and private spheres were formed in Catholic schools; and many basic health care needs were provided by Church-run health care institutions,” he wrote on the Vatican News website.
The church supports 395,000 Catholics in Singapore with its 29 parish churches, three devotional churches, 53 schools, 47 humanitarian organizations and two health care institutions. Goh said the church holds frequent dialogue with the government, which views it as an important contributor and shaper of Singapore's social fabric.
Goh, Singapore's first cardinal installed by Francis in 2022, is a member of two Presidential Councils that advise the government on matters relating to racial and religious harmony and minority rights.
“As the final stop on this apostolic journey, Singapore stands as a testament to peaceful coexistence in a modern, multicultural, and multi-religious society," Goh wrote in his reply to the AP. "This reflects the spirit of unity and diversity that Pope Francis has emphasized throughout his pontification.”
