When Do You Want To Go?

The rugged and fragile Arctic is a fairytale of a destination, and an expedition cruise to Svalbard is the quintessential Arctic cruise to discover its many wonders. Also often known as Spitsbergen , the name of the archipelago's largest and only permanently populated island, it’s a dramatic wilderness of glaciers and mountains , ice fields and barren tundras , extremities of light and dark , and home to more polar bears than people, yet people it has – making this a destination in which you can truly experience life in the high Arctic.

Our expedition cruises to Svalbard start from just £2,999pp!  Get in touch   to start planning your voyage   today!

Located within the Arctic Ocean midway between Norway and the North Pole,  Svalbard is an incredible place with beautiful landscapes and a myriad of mesmerising wildlife . Exploring the archipelago involves gliding through iceberg-strewn seas to the Arctic coast, where large flat plains and mossy tundra dusted with snow contrast against sharp mountains jutting from the earth like icy blades. The landscapes are a delight to behold and a photographer’s dream, with awe-inspiring frozen lands littered with towering icebergs over ten storeys high. Wildlife in the Arctic is hugely diverse and perfectly adapted to the cold. Polar bears are undoubtedly the stars of the show but accompanied by walruses, seals and whales at almost every turn, you’ll have a hard time picking out a real highlight.

If you want to explore other highlights of this captivating region, there are many cruises that take in multiple destinations on one voyage, and Svalbard combines brilliantly with other Arctic destinations such as  Greenland , Iceland and Norway .

gashamna

Historical site on SW side of Hornsund with the remains from the days of whaling and overwintering Russian and Norwegian trappers.

Gåshamna was also the site of the Swedish/Russian Arc of Meridian Expedition from 1898 to 1902, one of the first international research expeditions in the Arctic. In addition to the cultural remains, there is beautiful tundra with the Arctic flora.

Skansbukta

Remains of a gypsum mine below spectacular and beautiful cliffs. In addition to the cultural remains, including parts of a railway and a barge, it has an interesting flora due to the ‘mild’ location, deep inside Isfjorden.

Nearby cliffs, which go right down to the sea, are eroded into impressive shapes, and can be a great place to explore offshore in a Zodiac, the chance to see various seabirds that breed on the cliffs, with kittiwakes and four auk species including Puffins. It is a popular site for a combined landing and Zodiac cruise, and a ‘sail’ past on boats out from Longyearbyen that are visiting Pyramiden.

Atlantic Walrus (Odobenus r. rosmarus) haul up

Located on the NW corner of Edgeøya at the entrance to Freemansundet, Kapp Lee is the location of a Walrus haul out that is also a good location for Reindeer, the chance of Arctic Fox, and great tundra vegetation.

It is also a site of cultural significance with the foundations of a Pomor dwelling and several hunters cabin including a hexagonal shaped hut that is right next to the Walrus haul out. Just above the shoreline on nearby beach are the remains of a Bow Head Whale where the carcass must have drifted ashore long ago. Now, with isostatic rebound (the land slowly rising up after being pushed down under the weight when the whole of Svalbard was under an ice sheet) the bones are a short distance above the shoreline.

Puffin Raudfjorden

Raudfjorden

Further around the Northwest coast of Spitsbergen, further to the east, this fjord is often blocked off by the pack ice in the early season before, but is the first area to become free as the pack ice retreats from the NW corner of Spitsbergen.

The mountains in this area are rugged and the coast here may have been the land that Barents saw when he came up with the name of Spitsbergen. The name, ‘red fjord’ comes from the red sandstone in the south and east areas of the fjord. There is a hunter’s wooden cabin at Bruceneset and a cairn for a pioneer that died of scurvy whilst overwintering in 1907/08. The name is for the explorer William S. Bruce, the area named by Prince Albert I of Monaco on the Princesse Alice on his oceanographic expeditions to Svalbard from 1898 to 1907.

Hinlopenstretet

Hinlopenstretet

The sound between Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet in the high Arctic, in contrast to the milder coast of western Spitsbergen. Early in the season it is locked in ice that slowly clears from the south.

The northern end can be blocked by the pack for a while, varying from season to season. Once open, it enables circumnavigation of Spitsbergen, although ice can still drift in on strong currents and block Hinlopenstretet. When Hinlopenstretet is open, but the northern end is still blocked, ships will come into the area, typically sailing along Freemansundet between Edgeøya and Barentsøya, then return.

The area is superb for Zodiac cruises and landings, and can be superb even as a ship cruise. There are plenty of seabirds, the sound can be good for whales, there are various fjords to explore, like the surprisingly arid and desert-like Wahlenbergfjorden, various island groups to explore, like Wahlbergøya, and the chance to experience what is described as the polar desert. Three locations stand out as highlights in whole of Svalbard, the ice cliff Bråsvellbreen, the Walrus Haul out at Torellneset , and the bird cliff at Alkefjellet.

Smeerenburgfjorden - Svalbard

Smeerenburgfjorden

This extensive fjord system has impressive scenery and numerous glaciers that is great to explore by ship whilst being on the watch out for bears. It is also an area with lots of history.

Smeerenburg was the base for the Dutch whalers that was known as ‘blubber town’, with the remains of the blubber ovens for those that get ashore. There is also a Walrus haul out that can be observed from the shore, or from a Zodiac if there is a bear nearby (quite often the case here in the NW). Close by is Virgohamna, the site where Andrée set off his ill-fated trip to the North Pole by balloon in 1897, and where Wellman attempted to fly to the pole in the early 1900’s. Today there are the scattered remains of the balloon shed and the aircraft hangar. Special permission is required to land but the remains can be seen from a Zodiac offshore. Smeerenberg was also the location where the Fram appeared after drifting across the Arctic Ocean, stuck in the ice for three years!

Kongsbreen og Tre Kroner

Kongsvegen and Kongsbreen

The inner part of Kongsfjorden is popular for ship cruising and especially Zodiac cruising with the mountain scenery, some impressive glacier fronts, and the chance to explore the ice floes looking for wildlife, and the chance of a bear.

Also keep a look out for Long tailed Jaegers, one of the few places they breed in Svlbard is on the island of Ny London in the middle of Kongsford. A number of lakes and pools in the region can attract a range of waterbirds.

Floating Ice from the Brasvellbreen Glacier

Austfonna and Bråsvellbreen

The ice cliff here is so impressive it features in the opening credits of The Frozen Planet. It is where the massive ice cap of Austfonna, covering 58% of Nordaustlandet, meets the sea, and the third largest ice cap in the World.

The ice cliff is about 180km long, apart from few rocky out¬crops, and roughly 24m high, with a series of waterfalls along the length when it is warmer. The ice cliff is routinely referred to as Bråsvellbreen, but it is the huge glacier streaming out of Austfonna. It often surges forward and is known as the Sudden Swell Glacier. The section at the southern end of Hinlopenstretet is the most accessible, often as a combined ship cruise and a Zodiac cruise, and it is simply breath taking, a bit like the ice wall in the Game of Thrones!

There is also the chance to check out wildlife on the ice floes and the bergy bits.

Negribreen

The largest glacier on Spitsbergen that flows into the NW sector of Storfjorden with the longest front to any glacier in Svalbard where it reaches the sea.

With numerous carvings it is almost impossible for a ship to get close for a ship to get close, apart from the northern end, but it makes for a stunning Zodiac cruise with the ice cliffs, the icebergs, and the brash ice. As well as looking out for wildlife the area is known for its stunningly beautiful blue icebergs.

The 14th July Glacier

Fjortende Julibukta

The 14th of July bay and glacier, named by Prince Albert I of Monaco on the Princesse Alice on his oceanographic expeditions to Svalbard from 1898 to 1907.

It is one of the highlights in Krossfjorden, often combining a landing with a Zodiac cruise. Cruising along the impressive glacier front, there are regular calvings with bergs in the bay that attracts birds like kittiwakes. And nearby there are bird cliffs with a colony of Thick-billed Murres (Brünnich’s Guillemot) that also includes Atlantic Puffins. Options for landing (being careful of potential Tsunami waves from calvings) include one of the best spots in the whole of Svalbard for flowers, and even the chance to walk on the side of the glacier.

Ny Ålesund

The World’s northernmost year-round community and a site of cultural importance with layers of history. Originally it was a remote coal mining town, known as Kings Bay, until a serious accident in 1962.

The location meant King’s Bay was the starting point of various historical attempts to reach the North Pole, and the mast for Nobile’s airships can still be seen. Today it is a centre for international Arctic research, with traditional houses of when it was King’s Bay alongside modern bases for various countries. It is great to walk around the town and tourism also plays a role and ships can come alongside at the dock (one of the few docks apart from Longyearbyen and Barentsburg in Svalbard). There are shops, a museum, and the most northerly post office in the World. It is also great for birds, including Barnacle Geese (perhaps the most well studied wild geese in the World), Red-throated Loons on the lake, and the chance of an Ivory Gull by the dog kennels.

Arctic tern Magdalenefjorden

Magdalenefjorden

One of the most spectacular and most photographed fjords in Svalbard, and with all the pointed peaks it can be understood how Spitsbergen got its name. Very popular for the landing at Gravneset, with the whaler’s graveyard it is named after, with the remains of the blubber ovens from the whaling days.

The tundra is also great for plants and wildlife, from geese to Arctic Terns. Zodiac cruising is a great way to explore the rest of the fjord and to look out for wildlife that includes a huge Little Auk colony in the scree on the northern side (some quite close to the shore), and to look out for seals. As well as Ringed Seals and Bearded Seals there is a spot with Harbour Seals (the most northerly in the World?), and a site where Walrus haul on a sandy beach at the entrance of the fjord to the west of Gravneset. The Waggonwaybreen glacier has been retreating and ships can get quite close to witness carvings, a floating platform on the part of the open fjord that was covered by the glacier just a few years ago. Staff will always be on the lookout for bears that can turn up here.

QuarkExpeditions_ Northwest Passage Arctic Canada

Nordfjorden

There are several deep fjords along the north coast of Isfjorden with glaciers coming down to the bay. These can be popular for Zodiac cruises along the glacial fronts, discover wildlife, and in some places, even to get ashore to walk on a glacier.

Atlantic Walrus (Odobenus r. rosmarus) male

North coast - Nordaustlandet

With most of the island under the icecaps of Austfonna and Vestfonna, this rugged coastline is not covered by the ice cap, including Kapp Platten, but few ships visit this remote coast, preferring to explore Sjuøyane.

G Expedition Arctic Svalbard

Vårsolbukta

On the NW side of Bellsund, this is a huge Little Auk colony amongst the extensive scree on the side of the mountain ridges above the landing beach.

It can be a challenge to get to, and to scout, in case of bears, but it is a stunning wildlife spectacle with thousands of Little Auks wheeling around and calling (sounding like little trolls!). The activity also attracts Arctic Foxes and the tundra, with all the nutrients leaching down, is superb for plants, and to look out for geese and Reindeer.

Along the shore there is the chance of Beluga.

Bearded Seal (Erignathus barbatus) the lucky survivor

Torrelneset

The highlight here is the large Walrus haul out on the beach, one of the best in Svalbard.

It is also a great location to land, one of the few locations on Nordaustlandet, and experience the polar desert, and to walk up a series of raised beaches to a viewpoint overlooking Hinlopenstretet.

QuarkExpeditions_Spitsbergen in Depth Arctic

A long narrow island of hard bedrock at the entrance to Van Mijentfjorden, the northern fjord arm of Bellsund. It is popular for a Zodiac cruise around the island and through the narrow Mariasundet, with the strong currents that attract seabirds.

There is the chance of landing to explore the geology, but with lots of scouting first to make sure there is not a hidden bear. The surrounding mountains provide some spectacular scenery and some impressive geology. But few cruise ships go further into this deep fjord, preferring to do landings in Bellsund, and to ship cruise into Hornsund.

QuarkExpeditions_ Spitsbergen Photography: In Search of Polar Bears

Isbjørnhamna

Site of a Polish research base on NW side of Hornsund. A few cruises get the chance to visit the base and to go up to the Little Auk colony.

QuarkExpeditions_Spitsbergen in Depth Arctic

Ahlstrandodden and Bamsebu

These two sites are at the entrance to the southern arm of Bellsund - Van Keulenfjorden. Both sites, and the area between them, are scattered with remains from the Beluga, the white whale, that was hunted for the blubber and skin. There are piles of bleached bones and upturned wooden boats that were left when the area was abandoned in the 1930’s.

Beluga can be seen along the shore here. If you are lucky to encounter them it is poignant with their bleached bones on the shore.

It is popular site for a landing and to walk across the tundra between the two sites, looking for Arctic flowers, Reindeer, Arctic Foxes, and check out some hunter’s cabins and the remains of fox traps.

Also look out for Purple Sandpipers and Red Phalaropes feeding along the shoreline.

Barentsburg

Barentsburg

An active Russian mining town on the hillside of Grønfjorden, that has fallen on hard times, and it can look bleak and stark.

But it is a great place to walk around with the Soviet architecture. There is a hotel, a souvenir shop, a museum, and recently, with more investment, a brewery. Most of the cruises do not visit, but it is easy to see on a clear day sailing in or out of Isfjorden. It is a popular day trip from Longyearbyen, and you could even stay overnight.

Atlantic Walrus (Odobenus r. rosmarus) male

This island is off the NE coast of Nordaustlandet and there is a very large Walrus colony, with lots of mothers with young.

Although it is almost impossible to get ashore with the restrictions and all the Walrus, the terrain, and the chances of bears, it is popular for a Zodiac cruise for ships doing a circumnavigation of the whole archipelago.

Poolepynten

Poolepynten

This location is outside Isfjorden on the long island of Prins Karls Foreland, but is within the reach of day trips from Longyearbyen, on a long boat ride.

It is known for the Walrus haul out, one of the few relatively close to Longyearbyen, and is popular as a landing for cruise ships. It is a great location to experience a haul out, and they are so used to people, individuals swimming along the shore sometimes come for a closer look! The beaches are covered in logs that have drifted all the way across the Arctic Ocean from Siberia, just watch out for Arctic Terns. The lagoon to the rear can be great for Purple Sandpipers, Red Phalaropes, and Red Throated Loons.

Arctic Beauty - Svalbard - Woodfjorden

Woodfjorden

This large fjord, and the associated Bockfjorden and Liefdefjorden in northern Spitsbergen, becomes accessible as the pack retreats. It is great for ship cruising, enjoying the scenery, and to look out for bears along the extensive coastline.

Flexibility is key with the chance of bears and changing weather conditions, but with plenty of choices in this large fjord complex. Zodiac cruises are popular, including Monacobreen glacier at the end of Liefdelfjorden, and the islands of Andøyane, a great area for a range of birds, including King Eider. There are also options for landings. The large and impressive wooden hut at Mushamna on the NE side of Woodfjorden. The small hunter’s cabin known as the Texas Bar in Liefdefjorden. The ‘thermal spring’ at Jotunkjeldane in Bockfjorden.

Bjørnøya

Bjørnøya (Bear Island)

Bear Island is considered Svalbard’s southernmost island, roughly half way between Spitsbergen and Norway’s North Cape. Although the last polar bears were seen in 2004, the name goes back to Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz and his visit in 1596.

The island has been used to hunt walrus, for whaling, and even coal mining has taken place. The strategic location on the border of the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea has led to a meteorological station being set up by Norway near Gravodden on Bear Island’s north coast. Some two thirds of the island is a relatively flat plain with shallow freshwater lakes and Ramsar Wetland, while the entire island and the surrounding waters are a Nature Reserve.

Bear Island has also been designated an Import Bird Area as it is a staging area for Pink-footed and Barnacle Geese and the steep cliffs south of Sørhamna are home to thousands of breeding seabirds, the area of most interest for a ship cruise, and even a Zodiac cruise on the few occasions the seas is calm.

Spitsbergen

This island, and the associated smaller islands, is off the NW coast of Nordaustlandet. Lågøya means ‘low island’, and it is the site of a Walrus haul out and is great for bird life, with the chance of Sabine’s Gulls that are attracted to the lagoons on the island.

Part of the island is sea¬so¬nal¬ly pro¬tec-ted and off limits and landings are often thwarted by the presence of a bear, or bears. It is an area where there can be loose pack ice when the pack, further to the east, is still too compact to sail though. It means this location very popular for Zodiac cruising with the wildlife that can be encountered. There is at least one old hunter’s cabin on the island, but conditions were particularly harsh on Lågøya, some perishing on the island, making hunters reticent of over wintering here.

Whales & Dolphins

Whale Watching

The shallow seas off South West Svalbard and the drop-off into deeper waters are probably the best places for whale watching in Svalbard.

In addition to the Humpback Whale, Fin Whale, and Blue Whale, the SW is a good area to see White-beaked Dolphins (more elusive to the NW), whilst heading further out to deeper waters, there is the chance of spotting Sperm Whales and the Northern Bottlenose Whale.

Brucebyen

Across the bay from Pyramiden, surrounded by some impressive mountains and geology, with a small group of houses and remains of a railway.

These were constructed in 1919 by William Spiers Bruce, the Scottish oceanographer and polar scientist, with the Scottish Spitsbergen Syndicate Ltd. It is a great example of attempts to mine at the start of the 20th century.

Krossfjorden

The two split fjords that form the inner part of Krossfjorden are popular for ship cruising and Zodiac cruising to enjoy the scenery, the glacier fronts, and to look out for wildlife and the chance of a bear.

There are also several options for landings including Möllerhamna, with a hunter’s cabin painted orange that is known the ‘Lloyds Hotel’. Many cruise ships have visited the site for over 100 years, leaving behind mementoes like signs, graffiti (no longer allowed), and a bar. Sigenhamna is another location where there was a German weather station in World War II.

Festningen and Russekeila

Festningen and Russekeila

There is some great tundra to explore along the flat coast on the SW side of Isfjorden, to the east of Kapp Linne.

Festningen, quite close to Barentsburg, is well known for the fossils, including the footprint of a dinosaur in sediments that have been forced by the Earth’s forces into a vertical position. Russekeila is a cultural site from the time the Russian Pomors carried out trapping in this area.

Albatros Expedition through north atlantic

Freemansundet

This is the sound between Edgeøya and Barentsøya, flat topped islands compared to Spitsbergen, with tundra flats and slopes below higher cliffs of hexagonal pillars.

This is the preferred route to Hinlopenstretet, although the eastern end is usually blocked off by ice in the early season. Whatever the conditions, it is a great place to look out for bears from the high vantage of the ship. Bears often rest on the tundra on either shore, just be aware there are plenty of reindeer that the inexperienced can mistake for a bear in the early season with their whitish coats. It is also an area where whale and seal carcasses can drift ashore, attracting bears. With the tundra there is still the slight influence of the gulf stream. But once through the eastern end the ship is in the high Arctic and a very different landscape, dominated by the polar desert and ice caps.

Storfjorden, Norway

Storfjorden

The large bay/sea between SE Spitsbergen and the islands of Edgeøya and Barentsøya that can be a good location for whale watching.

The bays along the coast of SE Spitsbergen can often be good ‘fast ice’ to the land that can attract a lot of bears as areas of fast ice start to reduce.

Black-legged Kittiwake (Atlantic) (Rissa t. tridactyla)

Haleysundet

This is the sound between Spitsbergen and Barentsøya and a second way to reach Hinlopenstretet instead of Freemansundet.

However, with the extremely strong currents few captains go this way, and usually later in the season, when there is less chance of ice floes hurtling through on the current, and at the right stage of the tide. It is a spectacular ship cruise, often with lots of feeding seabirds. There is a nearby passage that is far too narrow to sail through, but there is the option to go through this narrow passage by Zodiac whilst the ship goes through the main channel and picks up the Zodiacs on the other side. A really exciting and fun Zodiac cruise!

Ny London, Svalbard

This location is on the island of Blomstrandhalvøya that is in Kongsfjorden and just across the bay from Ny Ålesund. It is the site of an ill-fated attempt to extract the marble deposits by the Northern Exploration Company and the adventurer Ernest Mansfield.

A lot of money and effort was put into the project, but it turned out the marble would shatter as it warmed up! Today there are the remains of the marble quarry and debris from the mine, including wooden huts, and various bits of machinery, including a crane and a rusting steam engine. As well as the cultural remains it is a good place for wildlife, including the elegant Long-tailed Skuas that breed here that are very rare elsewhere in Svalbard, with the Arctic Skua being far more abundant.

Albatros Expedition high arctic- iceland to svalbard

The fjords in the inner part of Hornsund is superb to explore by ship with the spectacular rugged scenery, including the distinctive and towering peak known as Hornsundtind. The geology is impressive, and make sure to look out for birds, seals, and even Polar bears.

Deeper in the Fjord, there is the impressive and long glacial front of Hornbreen, and there are glacial fronts in Burgerbutka to the north, and Samarinvågen to the south. These locations are also excellent for Zodiac cruising to get close to the glacial fronts (at a safe distance) and look for wildlife.

Amongst the ice floes is a great place to look for Ringed Seals, Bearded Seals, and the Ivory Gull.

Thick-billed Murre (Uria l. lomvia) - life on the ledge

Alkefjellet

The bird cliff here is so impressive it features in the opening credits of The Frozen Planet.

Situated in Hinlopenstretet on the NE side of Spitsbergen, the cliffs are home to around 60,000 pairs of Brünnich’s guillemots, numerous kittiwakes, and Glaucous Gulls and kittiwakes. It is not only the site and sound of the birds, but the cliffs themselves, the geology is stunning with a series of sheer ramparts, some set back (a great place for Arctic Foxes), others going straight down into the sea. It is an outstanding Zodiac cruise, and since ships can get quite close, there is often an additional ships cruise past the cliffs with different angle from the higher vantage point.

Little Auk / Dovekie (Alle a. alle)

Fuglesongen

The views of NW Spitsbergen, the land of the pointed peaks, is impressive from this area, once it is free of ice. Fuglesongen means ‘bird song’ and thousands of Little Auks breed here, flying around in huge ‘wheels’ of birds and sounding like little trolls!

A few determined groups make a landing here, but it needs calm conditions, sticking out on the NW tip of Spitsbergen. But is still an impressive site to witness for ships that sail between Fuglesongen and Klovningen. There is no land to the north, towards the pole, the area often covered in the pack ice at the start of the season.

IJsberen op Spitsbergen

Translating as ‘White Island’, located in the extreme NE of Svalbard it is both a bleak and a beautiful location with most of the island covered by an ice cap, with one rocky peninsula at the eastern end.

Few cruise ships get here, and there are years when it remains in the grip of the pack ice the whole season. It is also the location where the remains of Andrée and his two companions were found, along with the journal, and a tin box containing photographic films. They set off on their ill-fate balloon expedition to the North Pole in 1897, then disappeared, a mystery for decades until their remains were found on Kvitøya, 33 years later in 1930, an indication of the remoteness of the island and the scarcity of vessels that sailed through the area or landed. With a memorial to the expedition, and just to step ashore, it is a unique landing. But this is often unlikely with changing weather conditions, where the fog can come in quickly, and the fact that that bears are often found here. It is still a great location for a Zodiac cruise, weather permitting, to explore the rocky eastern end, look out for Walrus and bears, and pause to think of the fate of Andrée.

Purple Sandpiper (Calidris maritima) summer plumage adult

A series of hard granite islands that translates as seven islands, islands that are to the north of Nordaustlandet. Being the furthest north in the whole of Svalbard, the islands can remain in the pack ice for much of the year.

Walrus can be seen throughout the area, with at least one popular landing at a haul out. There are plenty of seabirds, and the chance of a bear resting somewhere on one of the islands, sometimes several bears, understandable with the location. With the myriad of islands it is very popular to explore by Zodiac and the area also has important ties to polar exploration. Many of the locations were named after the English North Pole expeditions led by Phipps (1773) and Parry (1827), including Neslonøya, after a certain young midshipman! Not that long ago the whole area could be trapped in ice throughout the year and just to the east was the area where Nobile’ airship, the Italia, crashed onto the ice, with a huge rescue effort.

G Expedition Arctic

On the west coast of Edgeøya, Diskobukta is a narrow canyon, set in the steep hillside, with a large colony of Black-legged Kittiwakes, of over 100,000 birds.

It is quite a challenge to get ashore with the shallow seas just offshore, that makes it even more worthwhile to get here. With so many birds Arctic Foxes often patrol the base of the cliffs.

Russebukta Svalbard

On the SW coast of Edgeøya, the name means Russian’s Bay from when Pomor hunters were in the area.

This is an area of boggy tundra with numerous lakes that is a great location for a wide range of Svalbard birds and Reindeer in the Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve.

svalbard cruise

Our flexibility to adapt to the conditions and wildlife encounters, allows us to make the most of every opportunity. But let us give you an idea of what your dream expedition could look like below…

Longyearbyen Svalbard

Longyearbyen

We begin our expedition in the most Northerly town in the world, Longyearbyen. In the afternoon we will embark on our expedition vessel after an introduction from our expedition leader and a safety briefing from the Captain. We’ll set sail out through the majestic Adventfjord and as Longyearbyen disappears astern, wave goodbye to civilisation.

West Spitsbergen and Prins Karls Forland Area

In the morning we sail by Prins Karls Forland, an uninhabited island of beautiful scenery off the west coast of Spitsbergen. This is a place where sometimes walruses are likely to haul out or be sighted. In the afternoon, we may get our boots on for a hike to spot grazing reindeer. If the conditions allow, we will sail along the coast exploring places such as Krosssfjorden, home to majestic glaciers, and some of Svalbard’s most beautiful fjords and scenery.

Walrus Haulout in Svalbard

Exploring the Northern Fjords and the Ice Edge

Over the next few days, we will navigate between the coast and the sea ice that extends all the way to the North Pole. We will count on regular shore landings and zodiac tours to visit different natural and historical sites including glaciers, partake in wilderness hikes and fully immersive ourselves in the raw nature of the Arctic.

Every day we will explore deeper into the wilderness Svalbard has to offer. Under the guidance of our expedition leader, we will work with the weather and sea ice conditions to show you the best that the northern coast has to offer.

.3 ° N, .6 ° E

Scouting the Eastern Lands

If the sea ice grants passage, we will aim to head east towards the Hinlopen Strait area and venture deeper into a vast world of ice and cliffs. While attempting this we will be obliged to reach a new higher latitude to the voyage, crossing the 80 degrees North parallel. The days will be long and complemented with action, zodiac cruises and the search for wildlife. The ice will extend all the way to the horizon, and the enigmatic presence of the northern king of wildlife will be felt. We will potentially come across some immense bird cliffs where thousands of birds fly in and out without a break. These days will be filled with a sense of adventure and exposure to nature, the ice and the winds might let us through to the south, or we might need to turn around and head back West over the north. Regardless of the exact route, the expedition will build into its climax.

Southern Spitsbergen

We will follow the compass south and explore the region along the south coast of Spitsbergen. We will visit rarely visited landing sites and have lots of chances to take in the breathtaking nature, wildlife, and scenery. As we round the southern tip of Spitsbergen, we will enter the area around Hornsund where we will have a day to explore and do some wilderness hikes. We will then set sail north along the coast towards Isfjorden.

.3 ° N, .3 ° E

Already back in the protection of Isfjorden, we will find peaceful landing sites to hike or simply relax and take it all in. Isfjorden offers a fantastic mix of landscapes, history and wildlife. Offering the best possible closure to our experience before heading back to civilization.

Day 1 Arrive in Oslo

Having made your way to Oslo, you will be met by a representative of Aurora Expeditions and transferred to our group hotel. Upon arrival at your included hotel, please visit the Aurora Expeditions hospitality desk to collect your luggage cabin tags and to speak with our ground operations team, who may have information to share with you about pre-embarkation or to provide you with information about where to dine, withdraw cash or purchase last minute items from a local pharmacy or supermarket.

The remainder of your time is at leisure. All meals today are at your own expense.

Accommodation: The Clarion Hotel Oslo (or similar)

Day 2 Fly to Longyearbyen for embarkation

This morning, please ensure your cabin luggage is fitted with cabin tags clearly labelled with your name and cabin number. Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before transferring to the airport for our charter flight to Longyearbyen for embarkation. Any valuables or personal items should be kept on you throughout the day. In Longyearbyen, explore the town on a guided excursion tour.

On the drive to Camp Barentz, located in Advent Valley, your guide will give you an introduction to Longyearbyen’s fascinating history. Once at Camp Barentz we enjoy a presentation in the large ‘lavvo’ - a traditional building common in northern Norway. You will also have the opportunity to meet the friendly huskies and perhaps pick up some souvenirs. A visit to the Svalbard Museum is included back in town before embarking the vessel in the late afternoon.

After the tour, you will be transferred directly to the pier to embark in the late afternoon. Settle into your cabin before attending important safety briefings and enjoy the thrill of departure as we ‘throw the lines’ and set sail.

Note : the excursion is contingent on the arrival time of our charter flight to Longyearbyen.

Days 3–11 Svalbard

Svalbard offers Arctic wilderness at its best. The members of our experienced Expedition Team, who have made countless journeys to this area, will use their expertise to tailor our day-to-day itinerary, choosing the best options, based on the prevailing weather, sea-ice conditions and the possibility of encounters with wildlife.

Phenomenal fjords, magnificent mountains ranges, and a polar desert rich in fossils, set the stage for heroic tales of early exploration. See walrus hauled-out on sea ice or on beaches. On land, we stretch our legs on walks across tundra carpeted in brightly coloured wildflowers. We visit towering cliffs noisy with nesting guillemots and puffins, and scree slopes that hold Svalbard’s largest little auk colonies. Most memorable will be encounters with the majestic polar bear on pack ice.

If you have chosen an optional activity such as kayaking, you will have an opportunity to enjoy that activity when conditions allow. For those who are enthusiastic to participate in a polar plunge, as soon as conditions are suitable, you will hear the announcement to prepare for an exhilarating dip – a memory you will savour for years to come.

Day 12 Disembark in Longyearbyen, fly to Oslo

During the early morning we cruise back into Longyearbyen. Farewell your Expedition Team upon disembarkation and enjoy some free time before transferring to the airport for our charter flight back to Oslo.

Note: the arrival time in Oslo is contingent on the approved allocated flight slot of our charter flight to Longyearbyen, which we expect to receive in February 2025.

  • All transfers as mentioned in the itinerary.
  • One night’s hotel accommodation including breakfast, in Oslo on Day 1.

Sea Kayaking Vacations

One of the most exhilarating ways to experience antarctica, the arctic and beyond..

Sea kayaking holidays in the humbling wilderness of  Antarctica , the Arctic , and some of the world’s most biodiverse regions, are guaranteed to stir your soul. Paddle around brash ice and near icebergs of all shapes and sizes, absorbing the majestic scenery as it unfolds before you.

This Kayaking Program was created by kayakers for kayakers! Our program style offers the chance to develop and enhance your skills and to connect with our expert guides and your fellow Expeditioners. Participating with the small group through your voyage will minimise wasted time with briefings and equipment tryouts and maximise time on the water.

All of our  Expert Guides  are professional kayak guides, who have led trips around the world, specialise in the Polar Regions and have been chosen for their passion for the sport.

Kayaking is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and make the most of your time in the wild and remote  destinations we visit .

You have the option to discuss with the guides what you want out of your trip and they will help with recommendations on when to paddle, when to go ashore and when it’s possible to do both in one outing.

Our  purpose-built ships  have been designed with the activities in mind, each equipped with dedicated space for our high-end equipment, including Kokatat dry suits, Seals sprayskirts, PFD’s from Astral and paddles from Werner and Aqua Bound.

Please note:

  • Kayakers must be 14 years or over. A Parent or Guardian’s signature is required for participants between 14 and 18 years old.
  • There is upper size limit in the drysuits we provide onboard. If you cannot find a suitable size within our range and you would like to bring your own, please contact our Activity Specialist to discuss in more detail.
  • Travel Insurance  is mandatory on all Aurora Expeditions voyages. An additional policy or premium may be required to ensure you have adequate coverage for including this activity.

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. Weather permitting, the sea kayaking activity is normally available anytime the other expeditioners go out. Rather than travelling large distances, our aim is to ensure you see as much as possible. We paddle between 5 to 15 kilometres (2 to 4 hours) per outing, often offering a combination of both kayaking and onshore landings so you won’t miss out.

Each small group of kayakers (up to 10 per guide) will have their own intimate exploration of the small hidden bays and coasts that are inaccessible to Zodiacs. Of course, we also make time for your own shore excursions and wildlife encounters.

The elements play an important role in our sea kayaking program. It is important that you have an adventurous attitude and understand that the weather can impact our kayaking time.

The level of experience required differs slightly depending on the region you are visiting. For all trips, a basic level of sea kayak experience is required, equivalent to that gained in a half day Paddle Australia “Intro Sea Skills” course. You do not need to be an expert or know how to roll; however, it is encouraged that you are comfortable in a sea kayak in the ocean, and are required to be able to swim, have a moderate level of physical fitness, and no medical conditions that prevent you from safely participating. We are happy to assist you with any preparation you may need or want prior to your voyage.

Our guides do not offer instructional classes for beginners. Therefore, the sea kayaking option is unsuitable for complete novices. If your experience is limited, we encourage you to contact us to discuss your suitability. There is often ample time to gain the required experience before you depart.

Your guide will assess your ability on the initial paddle, and if you have insufficient experience, he or she reserves the right to restrict your participation in rougher conditions.

You should be fit enough to paddle for 15 minutes without stopping at a moderate pace, for up to three hours at a time with breaks. We encourage a moderate level of fitness and recent kayaking experience as much as possible.

Polar regions

During summer the air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, Greenland and Spitsbergen are generally above freezing but can range from -4°C to +5°C / 24.8°F to 41°F. The water temperature in the polar regions is close to freezing and winds sweep off the glaciers, making paddling a chilling experience. Scotland, Iceland, Norwegian coasts are warmer with water temperatures of around 12°C / 53.6°F. In the Antarctic Peninsula, and Svalbard we often paddle in sheltered locations with generally calm conditions. In exposed locations places like South Georgia, we often encounter stronger wind and more challenging paddling conditions. Your guides will be constantly searching for a way to get you out safely and enjoyably.

Temperate regions

The northern waters in Scotland, Faroes, Iceland and Norway are warmer than the polar regions but water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F mean you may opt to wear your paddle jacket on a warm, sunny day or our dry suits on a cool day. Surf landings are not likely, but you must be capable of paddling in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 20 knots. With that being said, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

Tropical regions

In Costa Rica and Panama, April is the end of the dry season. The shoulder season begins in May, bringing increased humidity. Afternoon rain showers are possible in May with temperatures ranging from 26-36 °C (80- 96 °F). Winds are generally light at this time of year. The water temperature ranges from 27 -29 °C. Surf landings are not likely, but be prepared to paddle in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 15 knots. Again, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

The Sea Kayaking activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and kayaking equipment. Fares for this activity start from US$900, AU$1,250, £460 or €550.

Prices are indicative only and are variable. They are calculated based on the days of voyage, ability to carry out the activity and exchange rates.

Aurora Expeditions will be providing kayak booties and dry suits. Below is the measurement chart for the sizes we provide. If you prefer to bring your own dry suit for this activity, please contact our Activity Specialist to discuss the suitability of your equipment.

If you cannot find a suitable size from the options available and you do not have your own custom dry suit, unfortunately we will be unable to accommodate you for this activity.

There are 20 paces available and our guide to paddler ratio is 1:10 and we provide an accompanying safety Zodiac.

Kayakers must be 14 or over. Parent or Guardian’s signature is required for participants between 14 and 18 years old.

Sea kayaking is offered in place of regular shore excursions. We aim to paddle as often as possible. Depending on the voyage, we generally aim to paddle twice per day.

We will give you a drybag for extra clothing, binoculars and anything that needs to be kept dry. You should also carry a water bottle. We recommend bringing a waterproof camera or phone, or ensuring you have a good quality waterproof case.

If the weather changes during our outing we will head back to the ship and perhaps join a shore excursion. The ship’s captain, expedition leader and kayak guide always maintain close contact to ensure a safe paddling experience. We do not attempt to paddle too far away from the ship. The emphasis is on experiencing the destination rather than travelling long distances.

The kayaks are made with a hard plastic and are easily paddled in swell and conducting shore landings, and through small patches of brash ice. We manoeuvre around the larger ice chunks and floes.

Kayaking in the poles offers a unique wildlife viewing experience. In Antarctica, we have many opportunities to encounter penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally we may even spot leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, we’ll paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large icebergs, however we maintain a safe distance from polar bears and walruses. Our guides carry rifles and flare guns in the Arctic to ensure your safety against polar bears.

Kayakers in wild temperate regions will have a unique wildlife experience, with possible encounters with seals and basking sharks. You will have the opportunity to view some of the largest sea bird colonies in the northern hemisphere.

The superb wildlife-viewing opportunities are endless in th e astonishingly biodiverse nature reserves we visit. Kayaks offer a unique opportunity to view marine and land mammals, coral reefs, tropical fish, sea birds and an astonishing range of rainforest birds. We will bring our snorkelling gear with us during our paddles and take advantage of any opportunities to view marine life up close.

In the unlikely event of a capsize, your experienced guide will assist by righting the kayak, stabilising it then pumping it out. Paddlers will re-enter with the guide’s help, or with a support Zodiac. With drysuits and warm clothing underneath you will be comfortable in cold water for up to half an hour. Note that the kayaks have separate compartments with bulkheads, which means they will float after a capsize.

No. Each kayaking place is for one person only. We value a program style that maintains participants through trip to maximise skill progression, group bonding and dynamics, and minimise wasted time with briefings and equipment tryouts.

SVALBARD CRUISES

Complete guide to cruising svalbard.

Svalbard is, without doubt, the most popular Arctic cruise destination . The stunning landscapes and epic wildlife keeps drawing travellers every year.

Below we have provided summary information on the most frequently asked questions we get from people looking to embark on a Svalbard cruise.

To help you plan your perfect Svalbard cruise adventure, we suggest reading all the information on this page and then following the links to sections you want to know more about.

Svalbard Cruise: The Complete Guide

Situated north of mainland Europe, Svalbard is an Norwegian archipelago of islands that range from 74° to 81° north latitude, and from 10° to 35° east longitude. The administrative centre of the archipelago is called Longyearbyen which sits on Svalbard's largest island - Spitsbergen.

Although part of Norway, the people of Svalbard have an elected government that sit in Longyearbyen. There are a number of coal mining communities dotted throughout the archipelago including Barentsburg and Sveagruva and also several research stations.

Although Svalbard has an Arctic climate, temperatures  throughout the archipelago are actually significantly warmer than other areas at a similar latitude. The warmer temperatures and 'midnight sun' allow flora and fauna to thrive on the islands, making it a true unforgettable destination.

In the shoulder months and winter, the Northern Lights display vividly above the islands, dancing across the sky in blues and greens. This is one o the main draws for travellers, particularly landscape photographers who want to experience the Northern Lights in a majestic setting.

However,  the major reason Svalbard cruises are so popular is thanks to the archipelago's abundance of Polar bears. With some 3,000 Polar bears scatted throughout the islands, a Svalbard cruise offers up just about the best chance to see a Polar bear aboard a cruise anywhere in the world.

When you also realise that walrus, reindeer, whales (including narwhal) and seals are also common, then you start to understand the region's popularity.

When cruising Svalbard, please respect the environment and follow the guideline set out by AECO and your guides.

Best Time To Cruise Svalbard

Svalbard cruise best time to visit

The Svalbard cruise season runs during summer from May through to September.

This is the time when the ice has melted enough for the Svalbard cruise ships to explore the incredible coastline and search out wildlife.

The shoulder months around May and September are not 24 hours of daylight, however, you get to see some stunning sunrises and sunsets if you're lucky!

Summer is the tine of the 'Midnight Sun'. For a few shorts months, the summer sun shines for 24 hours a day, allowing optimum viewing potential.

The high season for Svalbard cruises is June - July. This is when temperatures are at their warmest, often exceeding 15 degrees celsius.

This is also the period when the wildlife is most active and the flora comes into full bloom. The warmer the weather, the more seals you'll see sun-bathing on ice-floats.

This is the best tine to see a Polar bear hunt. Most are unsuccessful though and you will be super lucky to see a successful predation.

For people wanting to take shore hikes, kayaking expeditions and dog sledding trips, the high season is the best time.

There is little rain fall and the higher temperatures will make the activities far more enjoyable. Most cruises offer these activities, just make sure you check with the operator.

During winter the ice freezes over, creating giant seas of white where Polar bears roam in search of prey.

Because of the influx of ice, Polar bears and other wildlife are almost impossible to find in the never-ending sea of ice.

There are no cruises to Svabard durng this period. However, there is the occasional Northern Lights cruise during the shoulder months of February and October when there is still daylight, but the nights are long and dark.

For peopke wanting to expereince Svabard in the dead of winter you will need to take a land-based expedition trip.

Types of Expedition Ships

Svalbard cruise ship

Although this may sound strange, ship sizes vary considerably and can change your experience quite significantly.

Smaller ships often feel slightly more like an expedition. You'll have less wait times for shore landings and your ship will be able to navigate smaller bays and channels.

However, you'll feel the motion of the sea more on a smaller ship and won't get the same level off comfort that larger ships offer.

svalbard cruise

Research Vessels

Many of the budget cruises to Svalbard are offered on what is called 'research vessels'.

These are exactly what they say, old research vessels that have been turned into expedition cruise ships.

Although you won't get any luxuries, you'll get a real expedition feeling. Research ships tend to be fairly small, making them ideal for navigating smaller bays and inlets.

Expedition Ships

Expedition-style ships are the next level up.

Although not luxurious, they are better appointed than research ships and generally offer a great range of activites such as kayaking and camping.

Expedition ships are popular to Svalbard as many are purpose built for the task of finding wildlife.

Luxury Cruises

Although expensive, luxury cruises are simply incredible.

Expect gyms, saunas, jacuzzis, restaurants, and mych more as you cruise around the archipeligo.

Although luxurious, be aware that luxury vessels are generally quite large which may prevent certain shore landings in shallower bays.

Svalbard Cruise Cost

Arctic cruise cost

Because Svalbard is a remote Arctic region in which specially designed vessels need to navigate ice-strew passages, cruise prices tend not to be cheap.

The minimum you should expect to pay is $2,000 for a basic cruise of 10 days on a research vessel. This price would also mean sharing a quad cabin with communal bathroom facilities.

If you were to have your own suite on the same itinerary you should expect to pay double.

Genrally, most Svalbard cruises tend to cost between $4,000 – $9,000. For luxury ship cabins on longer itineraries you could pay anywhere up to $30,000.

Booking as a group or family will reduce costs as you will be able to book out a quad or triple room to yourselves.

Other Cost Considerations

Beside the main Svalbard cruise cost, there are also a number of other cost factors to consider.

Solo Travelers

Travelling solo is often more expensive, however, you can generally find a shared cabin to reduce costs.

Although expensive, its important to realise that once your Svalbard cruise starts, there are very few added costs. All activities, food, drink and accommodation are included in the up front cost.

You will also need to consider before booking are flights and gear costs. Because Svalbard is remote, there is only one airport - Longyearbyen.

Flight costs are often not cheap and you should budget at least $1,000 per person. This varies considerably depending where you're flying from.

You may also be taking a Svalbard cruise that departs from Iceland, Greenland, Norway or Scotland. This is often a little cheaper as the airports are much larger.

Gear is another factor to cost. Svalbard is cold, even in mid-summer. Temperatures are generally around freezing.

Many operators will provide a parka -but not all. You'll also need layers, boots, hats, gloves etc.

Visa and other Misc. Expenses

Other cost factors to consider are hotels before and after your cruise, visas and vaccinations, drinks, laundry etc.

Although all these cots are fairly minor, they will build up.

Choosing The Right Svalbard Cruise

Svalbard cruise ship 1

Being one of the most popular Arctic cruise destinations, Svalbard now has a wide range of cruise options.

Because the itinerary, ship size and time of travel all play a major part, it can often be a little difficult deciding which cruise will suit you best.

The most important thing to decide before you go is 'what do you want to get out of your Svalbard cruise?'.

Do you want to see Polar bears? Epic glaciers? Do you want to kayak or dog sled? Just answering this question will help you enormously in deciding.

Certain cruises will be aimed at certain things, whilst longer cruises tend to offer a greater variety of sights and activities.

  • activities
  • cabin type
  • book ahead

When you decide to sail will greatly alter your Arctic cruise expereince. For instance, Arctic cruises to Svalbard in summer are likely to see polar bears, whilst a winter cruise to Svalbard will provide you with some stunning Northern Light displays, but no polar bear.

However, due to pack ice and short winter days, 95% of Arctic cruises operate in the summer period. Saying that, when you cruise during this period will also alter what you see. The early summer cruises will see far more ice whilst the later summer cruises will get more wildife.

One thing to keep in mind is cruise duration. Do you have enough time to explore all of Svalbard, or should you take a shorter cruise around Spitsbergen?

Whilst most itineraries are between 10-13 days, there are shorter and longer ones depending on how much time you have. If you take a Svalabrd cruise that visits other regions such as Iceland, then this may add to the trip length.

Svalbard cruises are also offered in conjunction with other destinations such as Iceland, Greenland and Norway.

This is definitely something you should take into consideration when choosing. You'll find that adding another destination often does not increase the trip length, however, you will get less time in Svalbard.

If your main aim was simply to see polar bears, then choosing an itinerary that stays in Svalbard is your best choice. However, if you wanted to see musk ox and polar bears, then you would have to combine Greenland into the cruise.

Your itinerary choice will change considerably deending on the wildlife you want to see. For people wanting to see polar bears and walrus, an in-depth cruise around Svalbard is the best option.

For peopke wanting to see musk ox then Greenland will need to be incorporated into the itinerary. Iceland is great for landscapes and seabirds, whilst Norway offer some of the best fjords on the planet.

Hiking, dog sledding, caving, kayaking, camping, swimming etc. are all possibilities on a Svalbard cruise.

Make sure to diced what takes your fance and then make sure your itinerary offer it. Be warned though, it will come at an extra cost. Genrally between $500-$900.

Finally, there is your cabin. this will largely depend on your budget, but choosing the right cabin within your set budget is important.

The best advise we can give is to request photos from your specialist/operator prior to booking.

We really can't stress this enough, but please book ahead!

Many people beleive that last minute deals are the cheapest option. Yes, you'll get cheap (but limited options), however, booking 1-2 years in advance is generally cheaper.

Below we have listed the top options.

svalbard cruise

The Northern Lights

things to do on an Svalbard cruise - Northern lights

The Northern Lights are certainly one of the most fascinating natural wonders on our planet.

The good news is that Svalbard is one of the best places in the world to see them. The bad news is that this is only possible during the winter when cruises do not depart.

There are several options here. Firstly, you can fly into Longyearbyen during winter and take a land-based tour of the island which will include a good amount of Northern Light watching. Or, if you desperately want to take a cruise to see the Northern Lights, you'll have to settle for the coast of Norway where plenty of cruise companies offer short coastal trips during winter to see the northern lights.

If you would like to know more about the Svalbard Northern Lights, please see our detailed page here .

Photography

Svalbard-photography

Photography is a major draw for people looking to take a Svalbard cruise. The wildlife, epic landscape and gorgeous light make the archipelago an photographer's dream.

The 24 hours of daylight during high summer means photographers can literally go all day and many animals use this time to build up reserves for winter. If you're looking for predation shots then this is a great time to go.

Your Svalbard cruise guides will be trained in using photographic equipment and you'll be able to get some expert advise as you cruise through the islands. The guides will also know the best spots and best angles for fantastic shots.

For more information, please see our page on Arctic photography here . We provide all the tips and equipment you'll need for a successful Svalbard cruise.

svalbard cruise

Wildlife Watching

Svalbard cruise - wildlife watching

Most Svalbard cruises aim to see as much wildlife as possible.

This means searching out walrus, seals, seabird and, of course, polar bears.

You will be unlucky not to spot all, so keep your binociluars at the ready.

svalbard cruise

Kayaking and Zodiacs

Svalbard cruise - kayak

No matter what Svalbard cruise itinerary you take, most days you'll be on a zodiac searching out the wildlife and taking shore excursions.

Depending on your itnerary, you'll also be given the opportuity to take a kayak trip. This will need to be booked prior to departure.

svalbard cruise

Scuba Diving and Swimming

 Svalbard cruise - scuba

Onselect itineraries you'll be offered the chance to scuba dive or swim!

This is not as common, so you'll need to choose your cruise carefully. You will also need to be a fully trained diver with expereince in cold water.

Once underater you'll witness a landscaoe that few divers ever have. Just seeing an iceberg underwater is a treat!

svalbard cruise

Camping, Skiing and Climbing

Svalbard cruise - camping

Many itineraries offer extra activities like camping, skiing and climbing.

These all come at an extra cost and will need to be booked prior to departure.

We always recommend doing as many activities as you can as each one is a totally unforgetable expereince!

Svalbard Cruise Packing List

Svalbard cruise packing list

There is no denying that your Svalbard cruise will be cold. Conditions are frequently stormy and temperatures often drop below freezing. With the right gear though, you'll barely notice this!

Even if you are travelling in the height of summer, there are some pieces of clothing you'll still require for your Svalbard cruise.

Whilst some gear can be rented by your operator or prior to your trip, having your own clothing will be far more comfortable.

Despite the time of year you travel, there are a few key pieces of clothing you will need to bring. Items you'll need to consider before sailing are as follows:

Items To Consider

Clothing: Weather conditions in Svalbard are far colder than most places. Temperatures are freezing and you'll need to wear layers. This includes a base layer, fleece and parka.

Footwear: The right footwear is critically important for your Svalbard cruise as you'll be making a number of shore landings. These shore landings are 'wet landings' and you'll need a special pair of rubber soled waterproof boots.

Headgear: Much heat escapes through your head, so bringing a good beanie is super helpful. You'll also want some UV sunglasses as the snow is seriously bright when trekking.

Gloves: Your hands will be the first part of your body to freeze. Therefore, it is critically important to get a good pair of gloves for your Svalbard cruise.

Bags and Daypacks: You'll no doubt have camera equipment with you. Bringing a good backpack is very useful for lugging it around on shore.

Important Accessories: From water bottles and sunscreen to spare batteries and filters, there are loads of accessories that will make your Svalbard cruise that much more pleasant.

Svalbard Cruise Highlights

Edgeøya-svalbard-cruise

Edgeoya, or Edge Island as it is more commonly known, is a 5,073 square kilometres (1,960 sq mi) Norwegian island. It's found to the southeast of Svalbard and has a resident population of polar bears and reindeer. There is also an epic ice field.

Located on the major island of Spitsbergen, Ny-Ålesund is a research town in Oscar II Land. Owned and run by the Kings Bay company, the town hosts research facilities for 10 countries and is completely fascinating to visit as part of your trip.

Hinlopenstretet

Hinlopen_strait-Svalbard-cruise

Often called the Hinlopen Straight, the Hinlopenstretet is a 120km long straight that separates the two largest island in Svalbard - Spitzbergen and Nordaustlandet. The straight is often difficult to pass though thanks to the thick pack ice.

Monacobreen

Sailing The Svalbard Line

Welcome to Bergen ! Your voyage begins in this beautiful city on the west coast of Norway. What began as a small village was developed by King Olav Kyree in 1070 AD and is now Norway’s second largest city. The majestic peaks that famously surround the city give Bergen its nickname, “The City of Seven Mountains”.

Nestled in Bergen’s center is Vågen Bay, the historic core of the city, and home to the UNESCO-listed Bryggen quarter made up of charming cobblestone streets and local boutique shops. Across from Bryggen, you’ll find the fish market, which cooks up fresh and delicious seafood dishes to feast on.

Before you board MS Trollfjord, visit our comfortable guest lounge at the Bergen Terminal. Here, you can talk to staff about securing a spot on any optional excursions still available.

Once we’ve welcomed you aboard, you’ll meet your ship’s Coastal Experience Team , who will be your hosts and guides to the Norwegian coastline and Svalbard. Get acquainted with your shipmates and take some time to get comfortable in your new home-away-from-home.

Enjoy your first meal aboard the ship, and watch the row of colorful buildings on the seafront get smaller behind you as you sail into the Norwegian Sea.

Alpine village by the fjord

Located at the mouth of the river Rauma on the shores of the Romsdalfjord, Åndalsnes is a picturesque coastal town, home to about 2,000 people.

The literal highlights of Åndalsnes are the mountains that tower over the town and which line the Romsdalen valley. Trollveggen, the Troll Wall, is one prominent cliff with a vertical drop of more than 1,000 metres, making it popular for BASE jumpers.

Experience the Norwegian concept of  friluftsliv  – a love of the outdoors – through a variety of activities, such as hiking to a local viewpoint.  For an easier way to take in the sights, sit back for a relaxing ride on the Romsdal Gondola or travel the winding Trollstigen Pass by bus.

There is also the Golden Train experience along the Rauma Railway, voted Europe’s most scenic train journey by Lonely Planet.

Norway’s oldest fishing community

Træna is an archipelago that sits along the Helgeland coast at the edge of the Arctic Circle , 33 nautical miles northwest of the mainland. Made up of around 500 islands, islets, and skerries, only four are inhabited year-round.

Spend the afternoon in one of Norway’s oldest fishing communities. If weather permits, you might be able to enjoy such activities as hiking and biking, or even island hopping.

With a large population of Sea Eagles , birdwatching is another activity you won’t want to miss. For a truly authentic experience, step into the age-old shoes of a Norwegian fisherman, and cast a line under the summer sun.

When it’s time to leave in the evening, take some time to rest onboard and unwind. We’ll cross the Arctic Circle as we continue heading north, commemorating the moment with a little Norwegian ceremony.

The Tip of Lofoten

Today, we explore the famed Lofoten Islands . Watch for the steep mountains rising from the sea as we approach from the south in the morning.

We dock in Reine, an important – and picture-perfect – fishing village since 1743. This is one of the most-photographed landscapes in all of Norway, where red-painted rorbuer cling to a string of islands beneath sharp mountain ranges reflected in the waters below.

Not far to the south of Reine, at the western tip of the Lofoten archipelago, you’ll find Å, one of the best-preserved traditional fishing villages in Norway. You can visit it on an optional excursion.

At the heart of this tiny village is the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, which covers the importance and development of fishing in Lofoten over the last 250 years.

Gateway to the Arctic

Tromsø is northern Norway’s urban Arctic hotspot, boasting impressive architecture, hip restaurants, and the world’s northernmost university.

Calling into Tromsø on the way to or from Svalbard follows in the footsteps of history. Most explorers and sailors on Arctic expeditions would embark from or return to the city. We aim to dock here in the morning, giving you a whole day to explore this historic Arctic city and its surroundings.

Take your pick from a number of optional excursions. Learn more about the culture and polar history of Tromsø on a city walk, or take a scenic bus tour. You can also visit the striking Arctic Cathedral, which has an impressively large multi-colored stained-glass window. Or ride the Fjellheisen Cable Car up Storsteinen Mountain for exceptionally beautiful views of the city, mountains, and fjords.

At the top of Europe

Around mid-morning, we arrive at Honningsvåg , the northernmost city in mainland Norway.

You have several optional excursions to pick from here. These could include taking a bus or riding a quad to the North Cape, a hike with your Coastal Experience Team, or an introduction to what life is like at 71°N.

Honningsvåg is also the gateway to the North Cape , the northernmost point of Europe. The plateau stands one thousand feet (307 meters) above the sea, and is just over 1,000 miles south of the geographical North Pole. Take a moment to gaze out across the sea from a top the soaring cliffs, watching the waves crash against the rocks below.

Sailing away from Honningsvåg, we’ll enjoy dramatic views of the plateau from the sea. The ship will head further into the Barents Sea, leaving mainland Norway’s coast far behind us.

A Hurtigruten passenger looks out at Bjørnøya in Norway. Photo by: mcburneyphotography

At sea around Bjørnøya

The southernmost island of the Svalbard archipelago, Bjørnøya sits just past the halfway point between mainland Norway and Spitsbergen. We’ll be viewing this inaccessible land from the ship in the afternoon, so think of this as the prologue to your Svalbard adventure.

Upon seeing the island, you might notice the lack of trees, and even bushes. Very little grows here, with the land partly being covered only by a layer of moss and lichen. Whatever does grow here is fertilized by the abundant birdlife that nests on the sea cliffs. Get your camera ready to capture Little Auks, Puffins, Black-legged Kittiwakes, and Northern Fulmars flying over dramatic cliff tops and steep slopes, alongside many other seabird species.

Contrary to its name, which means “Bear Island”, the only native mammals are Arctic foxes. The island was named after a polar bear was spotted swimming in the waters nearby, but this is an unlikely sight this far south.

Dog sledding excursion in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Photo by: Espen Mills

At the edge of the world

Today, we arrive at the Svalbard archipelago and make our way up to Spitsbergen, the largest of the three main islands. Magnificent brown and green mountains rise and ripple up from the High Arctic tundra while rivers of snow-melt trickle through the valley plains, glistening under the summer sun.

Take a moment to just be here, now, in Svalbard. You’re at a latitude more than 78°N and under 820 miles from the North Pole itself. The air of this Arctic desert is fresh and pure, and temperatures in summer average between zero and eight degrees Celsius thanks to a warm northern branch of the Gulf Stream.

In early afternoon, we find Longyearbyen nestled on the banks of Isfjord. A former coal mining colony, it is the biggest settlement in Svalbard and a hub for adventure travelers, as well as scientists and engineers attached to local research projects, like the famous Global Seed Vault .

Spend some time strolling around the town, admiring its collection of galleries, pubs, restaurants, brewery, and the notable North Pole Expedition Museum.

You’ll also have optional excursions to pick from that bring you into the awe-inspiring landscapes surrounding Longyearbyen. Explore by e-bike, open boat, or on a wagon pulled by dogs. You could go on a fossil hike, or have a wilderness experience at Camp Barentz. And if you’ve ever wanted to try dog sledding without snow, this is your chance.

Science on the Arctic frontier

At the tip of Brøgger peninsula, on one of Kongsfjord’s shores, is Ny-Ålesund . Like Longyearbyen, it began as a coal mine but became host to scientific stations from the mid 20th century. During the summer, there are over a hundred researchers based in the town, representing 20 glaciology and climate institutes from more than 10 countries.

Wander around what is one of the northernmost settlements in the world, drop in at the local museum and souvenir shop, or send a far-flung postcard back to friends and family from the small post office.

If you weren’t up in time to enjoy the impressive views of Kongsfjord on the way to Ny-Ålesund, make sure you’re on deck as we leave. It’s one of the largest fjords in the area, with an entrance guarded by two colossal creaking glaciers that regularly deposit ice into the fjord.

This stretch is also a good place to look out for walrus basking on the shores and for many different species of migrating birds, including puffins, king eiders, pink-footed geese, and guillemots.

Arctic fox and Svalbard reindeer can sometimes be spotted on land while the white beluga whale has been known to surface in the waters here too. If we’re very lucky, we might even see a polar bear prowling the coast for bearded and ringed seals.

Leaving Svalbard

Unfortunately, it’s time for us to say farewell to Svalbard and to Spitsbergen and sail south back to mainland Norway.

On board the ship, use the day to relax. If skies are clear, enjoy some summer sun out on deck and keep on the lookout for whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

For some fascinating insights into local history and wildlife, catch a lecture delivered by the Coastal Experience Team.

Enjoy the sumptuous food and drinks on board, courtesy of our Norway’s Coastal Kitchen concept that features the finest, most flavorsome, local Norwegian produce.

You can also curl up with a good book in the lounge or chat with new-found friends in the bar while reminiscing together about your favorite experiences of the voyage so far.

Exploring ‘Little Norway’

After a day at sea, we arrive back to mainland Norway.

Our first stop of the day is Tromsø , to drop off any cargo from Svalbard and pick up cargo bound for ports to the south, before we continue south to Senja. The island is one of the country’s largest, and northern Norway’s fast-rising star destination, as you’d expect for a place ranked among CNN’s top ten most beautiful islands in the world.

Often proudly described by locals as a ‘mini Norway’, Senja has a concentration of diverse landscapes that mirror different parts of the Norwegian coast, from the sandy beaches, turquoise waters and lofty mountains of its northern coast to the rocky coastline and pine forests of southern Senja and Ånderdalen National Park. You'll find rolling hills and birch forests to the east.

Disembark in the charming fishing village of Torsken and explore by bus, e-bike, on foot, or take to the fjords on a wildlife safari on one of the optional excursions.

Fall in love with Lofoten

Start the day with a few hours in Stokmarknes , an historic town with a special place in our hearts. It’s the birthplace of Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express.

It’s a fitting place for the Hurtigruten Museum , where you are immersed in the atmosphere of a different era on our retired 1956 ship, MS Finnmarken, proudly encased in glass on the waterfront.

After Stokmarknes, we’ll sail via Raftsundet and Trollfjord to Lofoten . The rest of the day is all about exploring this breathtaking archipelago. Hailed as one of the most spectacular areas in all of Norway, you’ll understand why as you see its jagged green cliffs rise dramatically out of the ocean, climbing high into the sky like giant teeth.

The beating heart of the archipelago is the town of  Svolvær  where your ship will be based. There are shops and restaurants to enjoy, and the hours can be spent exploring and getting to know the town yourself.

To experience the mountains, islands, and villages around Svolvær, choose from a variety of handpicked top Lofoten excursions. You can go fishing, kayaking, or sit back and enjoy the incredible scenery on foot or on a bus tour.

Highlights of the Helgeland Coast

The ship continues south and reaches the midpoint of the Norwegian coast. This is the Helgeland Coast , a well-known stretch full of distinctive mountains that have inspired many a charming myth and local folklore.

We will base the ship in the town of Brønnøysund , which features a lovely marina and a Neo-Gothic stone church from 1870. Spend your time exploring the town or join optional excursions such as a RIB cruise.

Further along from Brønnøysund is the unique Torghatten Mountain. The first thing you’ll notice about Torghatten is the hole that pierces right through its center. At an easy pace, it takes about an hour to reach the hole in Torghatten on an optional excursion. The panoramic view of the islands stretching out before you is well worth it.

The village of Sæbø in the Hjørundfjord. Photo by: Andrea Klaussner

Secret of the Sunnmøre Alps

The ship will make a brief stop in the town of Ålesund , known for its Art Nouveau architecture and picturesque position on a peninsula below Mount Aksla. If you’re joining the overland excursion to Hjørundfjord and Sæbo, this is where you disembark, or you can explore the town on foot.

Near to Ålesund, cutting through the peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps , a mile (5570 feet) high, is magnificent Hjørundfjord. Its picture-perfect position embedded in the Sunnmøre Alps means it is the area’s hidden gem and a secret from most other ships.

On the banks of one of Hjørundfjord ’s branches is the idyllic village of Sæbø. Tender ashore here and join an optional bus tour or hike excursion to explore Sæbø’s charming streets, fjord and mountain scenery, nearby villages, and local culture. If you left MS Trollfjord to go on an excursion at Ålesund, this is also where you’ll rejoin the ship.

We are fast approaching the last day of our voyage. What better way to celebrate our Svalbard Line experience than a farewell dinner on our last night.

Back where we began

We arrive back in Bergen in the morning. It’s time to disembark the ship, but not before saying fond farewells to your fellow passengers and to the crew of MS Trollfjord who made your Svalbard Line journey such a comfortable one.

You’ve traveled as part of this historic, iconic voyage to pieces of paradise along the Norwegian coast you won’t soon forget. If you’ve engaged in optional excursions, will you have photos to share of you kayaking, hiking, fishing, cycling in some of the most beautiful scenery ever seen?

We know you’ll take fond memories of the North Cape, Helgeland, Lofoten, Senja, Hjørundfjord, crossing the Arctic Circle, Tromsø, Bjørnøya, Longyearbyen, and Ny-Ålesund home with you.

Cruise Overview

Elemental landscapes and unique wildlife.

12-day expedition cruise from Oslo, beginning in Longyearbyen and attempting a full circumnavigation of the Svalbard archipelago

The edge of the world

Your adventure begins in Oslo with a flight to Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost town. An overnight stay gives you time to explore before we attempt to cross the 80th parallel north. Explore Svalbard’s stunning nature reserves where seabirds such as Brünnich’s guillemots and kittiwakes nest on the soaring cliffs.

Journey of discovery

On land, be sure to keep an eye out for reindeer and the elusive polar bear, and at sea, you’ll catch sight of whales and seals as we head for the fjords of Hornsund. Learn about the history of Arctic whalers and explorers as we continue to Isfjord before returning to Longyearbyen.

svalbard cruise

Explore cosmopolitan Oslo

Enjoy time in Oslo before flying to Svalbard

Your expedition begins in Oslo, Norway’s fjord-side capital. If you have time before your flight, head out to explore the city center.

With its rich history and fashionable art scene, Oslo is a fascinating city. You’ll find museums, galleries, and breathtaking architecture – including the beautiful Opera House and new Munch Museum.

Take a stroll in the Ekebergparken Sculpture Park or relax in a floating sauna. Explore modern Sørenga and enjoy urban beach life, or try New Nordic cuisine before flying out to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago.

svalbard cruise

Longyearbyen adventures

Explore the town at the top of the world

After breakfast, it’s time to explore the world’s northernmost town, a colorful frontier settlement where people are outnumbered by snowmobiles.

Longyearbyen is perfect for exploring on foot. Stroll down the main street and you might see Svalbard reindeer pass by. Although wild, they’re curious and gentle. Admire the polar bear–inspired art or visit the North Pole Expedition Museum.

Before boarding your ship in the afternoon and continuing your Arctic journey, join an included excursion after lunch, or try an optional electric bike, dog-sledding, or hiking tour.

svalbard cruise

Expedition days

Experience pristine Arctic wilderness

Over the next three days, you’ll explore the natural beauty and rugged tundra of Northwest Spitsbergen National Park. Surrounded by steep mountains, stark glaciers, and beautiful offshore islands, we’ll scan for Arctic animals, including whales, seals, walruses, and reindeer. If we’re really lucky, we might even see the elusive polar bear hunting on the ice. In stunning Kongsfjord, you may see glaciers calving into the sea.

Be ready for adventure: we’ll seize any opportunity to launch our kayaks or set out in our small boats (RIB) to go ashore and hike or participate in a beach cleanup.

svalbard cruise

Exploring the east

Scouting for polar bears, seabirds, and walruses

Be ready for anything as this stage of your journey is truly adventurous. If sea ice permits, we’ll venture across the 80th parallel north and explore the pristine wilderness of northeast Svalbard.

Perhaps we’ll head to the immense Bråsvellbreen glacier to see waterfalls tumbling into the icy depths, or to Kvitøy to look for polar bears roaming the ice. Heading south, we may explore Freemansundet and Kapp Lee, or take our small expedition boats to Edgeøya or Barentsøya.

In true expedition style, exactly where we’ll go will depend on the conditions on the day. Channel your inner explorer on exhilarating landings, hikes and kayak trips, and look out for wildlife like polar bears, walruses, guillemots and gulls.

And if the ice doesn’t allow us to pass to the east, you’ll experience just as much adventure as we delve deeper into the wonders of western Svalbard. We’ll take a flexible route through deep fjords and by soaring mountains, seeking out remarkable Arctic wildlife.

svalbard cruise

Hornsund and Bellsund

Majestic glaciers, birds, and pioneer history

Your expedition cruise continues south toward Hornsund – one of Svalbard’s most beautiful fjords. Rich, colorful vegetation transforms into towering mountains along this picturesque waterway. Head out to the deck to spot seals and whales, admire Mount Hornsundtind, and watch glaciers calving into the sea.

Then we head to snow-capped Bellsund, whose cliffs are home to large colonies of auks, guillemots, and northern fulmars, while Arctic foxes and Svalbard reindeer can be found below. Look out for the early mining settlements here and learn about Wanny Woldstad, the first female trapper.

svalbard cruise

Astonishing Isfjord

Witness living history and ecology

Our Svalbard circumnavigation continues into Isfjord’s lush fjord system, where you’ll see immense, glacier-carved valleys rich in wildlife, vegetation, and human history.

To the north, Alkehornet is home to guillemots, kittiwakes, Svalbard reindeer, and Arctic foxes. Clear traces of the area’s whaling and hunting past are visible on beaches and in bays. Farther south, we’ll pass the former Isfjord Radio satellite communication station, which is now one of the world’s most beautifully situated hotels.

Today’s activities will be determined by the ever-changing weather conditions in Isfjord. Each day, your Expedition Team will decide on the best options for exploring.

svalbard cruise

Return to Longyearbyen

The last day at the top of the world

Your Arctic adventure comes to an end back in Longyearbyen. Before your flight back to Oslo, you’ll have time to explore more of Longyearbyen and do a bit of shopping – perhaps you’ll pick out a warm Svalbard sweater.

A transfer will take you to the airport for your flight home. You’ll return with more knowledge about wildlife, history, polar ice, and climate change in the Arctic, and you’ll have memories of an incredible experience.

svalbard cruise
