Why Noir is my all-time favorite Safari extension [Awesome Apps]

By Joe White • 6:00 am, May 30, 2022

  • Top stories

Meet my favorite Safari extension.

Here’s why you should download it immediately.

Safari extensions

First, a little background. Following the launch of iOS and iPadOS 15 last year, Safari web extensions quickly started populating the App Store. While iOS and iPadOS 15 adoption may have been slower than in previous years, Safari extensions are one of the update’s best features.

They allow users to modify Safari, enhancing and extending the functionality of Apple’s built-in mobile web browser. For both casual and power users alike, extensions have a lot to offer. And whenever a friend talks to me about Safari, I tell them to download Noir.

Noir brings Dark Mode to every website

Noir makes late-night Safari browsing easier on the eyes.

If – like me – you use Dark Mode on your device, you’ll have no doubt noticed that when browsing Safari after hours, countless sites don’t offer their own Dark Mode. This can make browsing the web in a low-lit room, or in bed before falling asleep, an uncomfortable experience. Some pages load with bright, white backgrounds, appearing unreadable and jolting the senses.

Noir puts an end to that jarring experience by implementing Dark Mode universally.

After enabling the extension, Noir forces every website to conform to Dark Mode, even if they don’t natively support it. It works incredibly well. Once up and running, you’ll forget Noir is even there. It feels like something Apple shipped with Safari. On both iPhone and iPad, the experience is stellar.

More Awesome Apps

More Awesome Apps

Even more on offer.

By default, Noir gets websites to mirror your device’s system-wide settings. So, when your iPhone or iPad switches over to Dark Mode (which usually happens after sunset), Noir will do the same. Although this can be changed in the app’s settings, I’ve stuck with the default option.

It’s also possible to tweak Noir’s theme for a better experience. Although the default theme is set to “Dark,” I’d recommend switching to “Black.” This latter mode works great with Apple’s OLED devices ( from the iPhone X onward ), prompting the display to light up fewer pixels when producing the darkest shades of black. The reduced backlight from your iPhone results in a more comfortable browsing experience – especially when using your handset in the dark.

I’m also a big fan of Noir’s “Dim Images” toggle – it’s worth noting here that this can be adjusted using a slider in the app’s advanced settings. And Noir also offers custom settings on a per-website basis, which is another excellent and well-thought-out addition.

Noir is the best Safari Dark Mode extension. For those who want to, there are a number of settings to fine-tune.

Made by a solo developer and priced at the one-time, buy-once-use-forever fee of $3, Noir is the Safari extension everyone should download and install.

Works instantly

As soon as you start loading a website, Noir quickly analyzes the page and generates a tailor-made and beautiful dark mode for it. And perhaps the best part? You won't even notice this: by the time the page is loaded, Noir is already done.

Easy to configure

By default, Noir is linked to your device's Dark Mode, so websites only get dark when you want them to. But you can easily override the default behavior, and set site-specific settings as well. Noir even supports for the Shortcuts app to quickly change your settings.

No data collected. Period.

Noir takes your privacy seriously: it does not collect any of your browsing data. And your settings are only stored on your device and iCloud account.

Made for iOS

Noir was built from the ground up for iOS and iPadOS. It has a native interface and is integrated with all the system features you'd expect it to. In short: Noir feels right at home on your iPhone and your iPad.

One of the handiest types of software in anyone’s quiver is the browser extension: those cool little applets that let your browser do what you want it to do. And one of the nicest things about iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 is that you can now add extensions to the Safari browser. Even though this is a new feature that launched with the latest iOS version, there are already a number of useful extensions available for you to add.

What follows is a rundown on how to add extensions to your Safari app — while we’ve illustrated the process using an iPhone, you can follow the same basic directions with an iPad. We’ve also included a sampling of some extensions you can try.

How to add extensions

  • Tap on the Settings app.
  • Scroll down to and select Safari > Extensions.
  • Any extensions that you’ve already installed will be listed here. Tap on “More Extensions” if you’d like to see what’s available in the App Store. (You can also simply go to the App Store and search on “Safari Extensions.”)

In your settings, go to Safari > Extensions to see your current extensions and get new ones.

  • Once you’ve installed your first extension, you’ll see a little “puzzle piece” icon on the left side of Safari’s address bar. Tap that, and the menu that pops up will include your current extensions plus a “Manage Extensions” selection, which lets you toggle your extensions on and off.

It’s simple to install a new extension from the App Store.

Some extensions to try

This is a small sampling of some of the extensions that you can now access via the App Store. While there are not many extensions yet available (compared to the number of extensions for, say, Chrome), it’s a pretty safe bet that there will be lots more to come over the next few months.

Amplosion ($2.99)

AMP, which is short for “Accelerated Mobile Pages,” is a web format created by Google to optimize search results for mobile browsers. However, if you’d rather not have Google tweaking the webpages you upload, you can use Amplosion to redirect the AMP links that show up in search results into normal mobile links.

Noir ($2.99)

When you’re browsing at night and you’ve set your iPhone or iPad to dark mode, you will often hit a website that is bright enough to make your eyes water. Noir allows you to set a dark mode for all the websites you visit.

1Password (subscription needed)

1Password is a well-known and respected password manager . If you’re a 1Password user, there’s no question that you’re going to want to add this one to your mobile Safari app.

Super Agent for Safari (free)

This handy extension automatically fills out a website’s cookie consent forms based on your preferences, which can save you a lot of time and irritation.

Web Inspector (free)

Something for developers: an app that lets you inspect the HTML coding of a website, modify it, debug it, and perform other essential tasks.

How to Force Websites to Enable Dark Mode in Safari on iPhone in iOS 17

It’s been a while since Apple introduced Dark Mode, however, there are still many apps that do not support dark themes yet. The same goes for a number of Safari websites like Wikipedia that are yet to implement it.

If you prefer to have the dark mode enabled while browsing the web at night, you would like to force websites to enable dark mode in Safari on your iPhone and iPad for a more convenient browsing experience.

Thankfully, there is a neat hack to get it done. And that’s precisely what I’m going to talk about in this short piece.

How Do You Activate the Dark Mode for Unsupported Safari Websites on iPhone?

Before moving ahead, let’s sort out the confusion about how this hack works! Now, you must be wondering how to turn on the dark mode for websites that do not support it. Well, there is no built-in feature to do so. Hence, we will use a third-party Safari extension to activate dark theme for unsupported Safari websites.

Don’t worry, the App Store has some really good extensions that are designed for this specific purpose. Having tried several extensions, I have found Nightfall up to the mark in most aspects. Even better, it’s also available for free.

That means you won’t have to shell out any bucks to get the most out of this app. On top of all, Nightfall supports not only iPhone and iPad but also Mac.

Download Nightfall on Your iPhone and Enable It

  • To get going, download the Nightfall app on your device (direct link).
  • After you have installed the app, open the Settings app -> scroll down and choose Safari .
  • Under the General section, tap on Extensions .

Choose extension s

  • Find Nightfall and turn it on.

Enable extensions on iphone and ipad

Activate Dark Mode for Unsupported Websites

Once you have successfully turned on the Nightfall on your device, you will need to activate it for the specific websites.

  • Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad and then head over to the website where you wish to enable the dark mode.
  • Now, tap on the aA text button at the bottom of the screen -> select Nightfall .
  • Next, turn on the toggle for it and allow it to see and alter the webpage content and your browsing history.

Important note:

  • It’s worth bearing in mind that Nightfall can read and alter sensitive information on web pages, including your browsing history, credit cards, phone numbers, and passwords.
  • Besides, it can also view the current tab’s webpage when you use the extension.
  • While this extension is reliable, we would recommend you not use it on sensitive web pages. Keep it specifically for certain websites like Wikipedia for reading or browsing the web.
  • Next up, customize Nightfall to your liking. For instance, you can choose to darken maps, dim images, adjust image brightness, invert PNG images, and even select a desired dark modes theme like dark gray, Molokai, and midnight.

Activate Dark Mode for all Safari websites on iPhone and iPad

In the end, make sure to hit Done at the top right to confirm the action.

Voila! The change will come into play with immediate effect and the dark mode will be implemented across the website.

Use dark mode for Safari websites on iPhone and iPad

There you go! So, that’s how you can use dark mode for all Safari websites on your iPhone. Now that you are familiar with this neat tip, make the most of it to enhance your reading experience at night.

Do you have any doubts? If yes, send ‘em in the comments section below.

Enabling Dark Mode On Any Website: A Step-By-Step Guide For iPhone

iPhone dark mode on Safari

Like most other devices, the iPhone offers a system-wide dark mode option . Dark mode is easier on the eyes, particularly for those who spend long hours staring at their phone. The harsh white background can be changed to a dark gray or black, reducing the screen glare. While it can take some time to get used to, once you've enabled dark mode, it's hard to go back.

Some people prefer using dark mode when the sun goes down since the screen glare can be particularly harsh under artificial light. Others prefer having it on all the time. Apps like Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter have a default dark mode.

Additionally, when dark mode is enabled on the iPhone, browsers like Safari and Chrome display darkened UI elements. However, this effect doesn't apply to websites. If you want to force all websites to load in dark mode, there are a few workarounds to enable this.

Enable dark mode on Safari with Reader

If you use Safari on iPhone, the easiest way to enable dark mode on any website is by using Reader. This mode hides ads , navigation menus, and other elements, making websites easier to read. With Reader, you can choose the website's background color, with two light and two dark colors (gray and black) available.

To enable Reader for all websites where it's available, follow these steps:

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Tap Safari.

Scroll down to Settings For Websites.

Tap Reader and enable the toggle next to All Websites.

Compatible websites will now be displayed in dark mode . Once you choose a preferred background color for Reader, all future websites opened in Reader will automatically open in that color unless you change it again. It's worth noting that not all websites work with Reader, and some only support the mode on specific web pages. Some elements of a web page and the layout might not always appear as intended. Apple also lets you enable Reader on individual pages if you only want it on a specific site.

Open a website in Safari on your iPhone.

In the address bar, tap the AA icon.

Tap Show Reader.

Tap AA again, and select one of the two dark mode color options. Tap AA once more to close.

Enable dark mode on Safari with the Night Eye extension

While Reader is conveniently built into Safari, it does change the look of websites and isn't ideal to use all the time. That's where the Night Eye app comes in. The Safari extension offers a three-month free trial for the Pro subscription, after which you must pay $8.99 annually to use it on up to three browsers. Alternatively, you can use it for free with the Lite mode, which restricts dark mode usage to five websites of your choice.

Given the extended trial period, it's worth checking out Night Eye before you buy it. Here's how to install it on Safari:

Download the Night Eye app from the App Store.

Open the app, tap Next, and then Start trial.

Next, open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap Safari.

Under General, tap Extensions.

Tap Dark Mode – Night Eye.

Turn on the toggle on the next page.

Under Permissions, select Allow next to All Websites.

You can now tap the Extensions button in Safari, which looks like a puzzle piece. Tap Night Eye and select Dark. You can adjust more parameters from this menu, like brightness, contrast, saturation, and blue light. Tap the Settings icon to access additional options, such as making dark mode default or setting a schedule. Another great dark mode extension for Safari is Dark Reader . The app costs $4.99 annually but doesn't offer a free trial.

Enable dark mode on Google Chrome

iPhone users who prefer using Google Chrome as their default browser are out of luck when making all websites appear in dark mode. However, there is a way to do this on platforms like Mac, Windows, and Android. This involves force-applying a dark mode by enabling a Chrome flag , an experimental feature hidden unless enabled.

While Chrome extensions work great on the desktop, they aren't supported on mobile. As a result, extensions like Night Eye and Dark Reader that work on Chrome for Mac and Windows aren't available on Chrome for iPhone and Android. The only option is to enable dark mode on the iPhone, which will cause certain UI elements in Google Chrome, like the address bar, buttons, and settings, to appear in dark mode. Here's how to turn on dark mode on iPhone :

Tap Display & Brightness.

Select Dark under Appearance.

Open Chrome to view it in dark mode. Websites will continue to open in their default mode unless they offer a dark mode themselves.

I know there are currently (at least) 16 iOS15 Safari extensions that offer a dark mode option. I've bundled them in this list which includes both paid and free Safari extensions. Dark Reader is also available on iOS. Best (paid) options I've read about are: - Dark Reader (4.99 dollar, pay once) - Noir (2.99 dollar, pay once) I'm still a bit hesitant to use these third party extensions though as far as privacy is concerned. I hope Apple will make it available in a future iOS version (probably iOS16).

I‘ve been using the Nitefall extension but the developer seems to have removed it from the App Store. So now I’m showing that the app has an available update but I can’t update it and it just stays in the list of apps with updates available. Does anyone know why the dev removed the app? I’m in the US, if that matters.

If you spend a lot of time on your iPhone or Mac computer reading articles on the web, chances are that your eyes will hurt after sitting in front of the screen for several hours. Bright light and small font lead to eye strain, headaches, and decreased focus.

Windows users have had the Dark Mode for a long time, and now it’s finally available for Safari users on iOS devices. You can get an extension for your Safari browser and read articles all night. Read on and learn how to activate Dark Mode on your iOS device.

Safari’s Native Dark Mode Function

Safari (even older versions) already has a built-in dark mode feature. This function won’t work for every website because it’s meant to help ease the strain on your eyes while reading.

Users who are running a newer version of macOS can follow these steps:

safari dark mode extension iphone

If you don’t have the option to use Dark Mode, you can use ‘Reader View’ within Safari. Here’s how you can use the Reader View to darken your screen:

safari dark mode extension iphone

If you don’t see the Reader tab, you can find it by clicking View and selecting Show Reader .

Of course, this won’t work for every web page. It will work for any blogs or articles you’re trying to read, so we have a few more options listed below.

Safari Dark Mode

Night Eye for Safari

This extension is another download available in the App Store for Safari’s lack of dark mode options.

safari dark mode extension iphone

Although this app is free to download, it will cost you $39.99 per year to use it. The free option, ‘NightEye Lite,’ will limit you to five websites. This is perfect for someone looking to activate only a handful of pages. The extension offers full image support and the ability to use the features on multiple platforms.

Download Night Eye for Safari

Visit your Mac’s App Store and download the extension.

Activate the Extension

Tap on the Night Eye extension and choose the dark mode option. If there’s a website, you’d like to view without dark mode, simply tap the extension again and choose “Normal.”

With great reviews and the 24/7 support team, this is definitely an add-on worth looking into.

Nightlight for Safari

Another great option available for Safari is the Nightlight browser extension . The extension is free and available for those using macOS 10.13 or later. This is an Excellent, lightweight addition to your browser.

With the optional timer settings, you can enjoy dark mode on Safari without ever having to toggle it on and off. The nightlight will automatically shift the color patterns when at night, then back again during the day.

Using Dark Mode in Safari on iPad and iPhone

On the iPad and iPhone, Safari comes with a built-in reader mode designed to ease the pressure on your eyes during night reading. Here is how to activate it.

safari dark mode extension iphone

Repeat the process for every website you want to read in dark mode.

Dark Mode on macOS Mojave & Catalina

Most Mac users had to wait for the macOS Mojave update to be able to activate the dark mode on their computers. Previous versions had to use shortcuts, and you had to make exceptions for every site you wanted to view in dark mode. So, if you have Mojave installed on your Mac, follow these steps to set the dark mode up.

safari dark mode extension iphone

  • Select “Dark” in the “Appearance” options, and all websites on your Safari will switch to a black background.

Dark Mode and Other Apps

You can use the Dark Mode for other apps, not just your Safari browser. If dark mode is enabled, some apps will automatically have it activated. Here is a short how-to on toggling it on and off for the most popular apps on iOS.

Maps – If you want to use a dark background for maps with the Dark Mode activated, open the app and select “View,” and then select “Use Dark Map.”

Mail – If you want to use light mode when reading your emails, open your Mail and select “Mail,” then “Preferences.” Click on the “Viewing” tab and uncheck “Use dark backgrounds for messages.”

Notes – Your Notes will open with a black background if the Dark Mode is activated. You can disable it by selecting “Preferences” and then deselecting “Use dark backgrounds for note content.”

TextEdit – You can switch to the Dark Mode when working in TextEdit by selecting “View,” then “Use Dark Background for Windows.”

Safari – With the Dark Mode turned on; all websites will show as dark when you load them. If some website doesn’t support Dark Mode, you can use Safari Reader.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to more of your questions about Apple Dark Mode.

Can I use Dark Mode with Chrome on a Mac?

Yes, but unfortunately, it isn’t an option provided natively. This means you’ll need to use a Chrome browser extension like the ones we’ve mentioned above. If you follow the steps above to activate Dark Mode on your Mac, it will have no effect on third-party apps and browsers such as Firefox or Chrome.

Can I enable Dark Mode with Mozilla Firefox on my Mac?

Fortunately, yes! Firefox makes many things simpler than other web browsers, and Dark Mode is one of them. Enabling Dark Mode on Firefox is the same on a Mac or a PC. All you need to do is click on the three horizontal lines in the upper right-hand corner of the browser. Then, click ‘Add Ons.’ From here, you’ll see a Themes option on the left; click it, then click on one of the options in the list that gives you Dark Mode.

There are several different color variations, so choose one that you like. Now, the Firefox system will show in Dark Mode, but not all of your websites will, so you may need to enable Night Eye for Mozilla or another add-on.

Ease the Strain on Your Eyes

Reading texts all night long can cause migraines, sore eyes, and unpleasant muscle strain; switching to Dark Mode is a great option. Your eyes will be grateful, and you will be able to focus for longer periods. Who doesn’t want to increase productivity while keeping themselves healthy?

  • If a website has a  Reader  button on the left side of the search field, click it to go dark.
  • Use a Safari extension to enable dark mode on all websites. We recommend Night Eye and Dark Reader

This article covers three options to enable and disable Safari's Dark Mode on your Mac: via system preferences, by using Safari Reader View and using a browser extension.

How to Turn on Safari's Dark Mode via MacOS

At night, black text on white backgrounds is particularly tough on your eyes. It's very simple to switch on Dark Mode for your Mac. It doesn't just turn on Dark Mode for Safari, it does so for all your apps but that's perfect for protecting your eyes late at night or in dim lighting conditions.

Dark Mode is only available in macOS Mojave or later.

Click the Apple icon on the top left of your screen.

Click System Preferences.

Click General .

Click Dark .

If you want the dark appearance to only appear at night, you can click Auto for it to automatically adjust as the day progresses.

All websites that have been designed to support Dark Mode will now show in a darker form than before.

How to Switch off Safari Dark Mode

Switched on Dark Mode and realized you don't like it? It's simple to switch it back off.

As above, click the Apple icon on the top left of your screen and then choose System Preferences > General .

Click Light .

MacOS and Safari will now return to the light background permanently until you choose to switch it over again.

How to Use Safari Reader View to Turn on Dark Mode

Depending on the website you're viewing, the only thing that may go dark with MacOS's Dark Mode is the buttons and menus around the website. To ensure the site goes fully dark to protect your eyes, you need to use Safari's Reader View.

Safari Reader View only works on certain websites. Often, this is restricted to blog posts and other text-heavy websites. It's worth using when able to though.

How to Use a Dark Mode Extension in Safari

The above solutions work only on a limited number of websites. If you want to enable Dark Mode for every website, you need to use a Safari extension. Many of these cost money but they can be useful. We recommend using either Night Eye which is free but limited or paying a one-off fee for Dark Reader. The process is the same for both extensions.

Install either Night Eye or Dark Reade r from the Mac App Store .

Open Safari then click Safari > Preferences .

Click the Extensions tab.

Check the box next to your newly installed extension to enable Dark Mode.

Both of these extensions should convert the vast majority of websites to Dark Mode as and when you need it.

How to turn on Safari dark mode on a Mac

How to turn on safari dark mode on an iphone or ipad, how to turn on safari's dark mode on any apple device to save battery life and reduce eye strain.

  • You can enable dark mode for Safari on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, which can help ease eye strain and extend your device's battery life.
  • Turn on dark mode for your Mac in System Preferences in the General section.
  • For an iPhone or iPad, enable dark mode in the Settings app by going to the Display & Brightness section.

In recent years, developers have been making it easier to enable dark mode for all your most common apps. That's good, because many people prefer dark mode because the palette is often easier on the eyes — especially at night — and it can even help extend your device's battery life by not illuminating the screen as brightly. Here's how you can turn on dark mode for the Safari browser on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

Safari automatically uses dark mode if you enable it in your Mac's System Preferences.

1. Click the Apple menu and then choose System Preferences…

2. Click General .

3. In the Appearance section, click Dark or Auto .

If you choose Dark , Safari and all other compatible apps will switch to a dark color palette right away and stay that way until you change this setting. Auto , on the other hand, sets the palette to dark at night and switches it to light during the day.

Just like on the Mac, Safari on your iOS device uses dark mode if you enable the feature in your iPhone or iPad's settings.

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap Display & Brightness .

3. In the Appearance section, tap Dark .

If you want Safari (and the rest of your device) to use dark mode automatically at night but switch to a light palette during the day, turn on Automatic by swiping the button to the right.

Safari Finally Has More Dark Mode Powers for Your iPhone

Not all websites are created equal, and that's why Safari doesn't apply Dark Mode to each webpage you visit during your iPhone's system-wide dark appearance. But in Safari's latest update , Apple gives its web browser more power to automatically apply Dark Mode to specific website content without having to use extensions like Noir .

While Safari's toolbars and unique UI elements conform to Dark Mode, Apple leaves it up to web designers to implement dark themes to match the system appearance on your device. Some web apps have implemented adaptable themes, but most webpages online will still blind you with bright light even when Safari's UI is darkened.

To help tackle the issue, Safari 16.4, which is available for iOS 16.4, iPadOS 16.4 , and macOS Big Sur and later, adds Dark Mode support for plain text documents, which are the brightest files on the web thanks to their simple white backgrounds and black text. When Dark Mode is enabled, .txt and other supported plain text files will switch to dark backgrounds and white text. This change also works in third-party iOS browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

Safari Finally Has More Dark Mode Powers for Your iPhone

This is just a tiny piece of the puzzle to creating more dark-themed web content, but it's a much-welcomed one. Aside from .txt files, I've also been able to get some .1st, .dtd, .log, .nfo, .sgml, .srt, .tex, and .text files to switch to dark views, but I have not had the same success for .xml, .rtf, .html, and other file types yet.

If you don't want to install iOS 16.4 yet, you can use a Safari extension like Noir or Neo Noir to automatically switch most websites to a dark theme when your iPhone's system-wide Dark Mode is on.

Ratings and Reviews

How apps should be.

Doesn't collect data. √ Pay once use forever. √ Doesn't break my flow to ask for a review. So far... I've been using it for about five minutes and so far, I'm impressed. The available themes are pleasing, and the compatibility with the sites I most visit is excellent. It does a good job of maintaining contrast, and it doesn't invert colors, so, for example, on a system status dashboard, red still means bad, and green still means good.

I think Noir is the better buy.

I’ve now tried three different paid safari dark mode extensions, and they all have their quirks, but I think Noir is the better buy compared to this one. What I liked about this app was that the background is true black, and has several other themes, and they’re good picks. I also liked that it checks when you’re in dark mode and acts accordingly. What I didn’t like is that for dark mode to switch, the page must be manually refreshed. Noir switches pages in real time as dark mode is enabled or disabled (though sometimes it won’t darken everything until a refresh). I also didn’t like that multiple websites I checked had strange artifacts — images with colors shifted strangely, buttons that were black against black and therefore invisible, images being blacked out, and even some websites had accent colors become much lighter when this extension was enabled. Last, I didn’t like that the theme wasn’t customizable on a per-website basis — so I can’t set one website to true black and another to dark gray, and have the extension remember that. There were some websites that this extension performed better with than Noir, though, so it might make sense for some people to get both apps, just make sure you don’t enable both on the same websites, because they can interfere with each other.

Working great on iOS 15

Thank you for making this app! Been using it for an hour and I’m already in love lol. Dark mode all the things.

How To Use Dark Theme For Google Docs, Sheets & Slides On iPhone And iPad

T he saying "Dark mode because light attracts bugs" is common with programmers, but even without such wise words there are several reasons why you should use Dark mode . Whether you're a programmer or not, staring at a screen for hours on end can cause a lot of strain on your eyes and even headaches. The effects can be worse if you're a night owl, and tend to use your device late at night.

Optometrists recommend using Dark mode for your devices to help your eyes adjust more easily between a room with low lighting and your screen. This reduces eye strain and minimizes fatigue. Additionally, Dark mode consumes less battery power. Many devices, including iOS and Android phones, as well as Mac and Windows PCs, offer a built-in Dark mode for this reason.

You do need to use a few workarounds including downloading an extension to use Dark mode on websites  such as Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, when using a Mac or PC. Fortunately, while the web client of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides doesn't offer a built-in Dark theme, the apps do. Here, we'll walk you through how you can enable Dark theme on Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, on your iPhone or iPad.

How To Enable Dark Theme For Google Docs, Sheets, And Slides

At first, the System Default option will be selected. This means that the theme of the Google app you open will change depending on whether you've selected Light or Dark mode on your device. You can enable Dark Mode on your iPhone or iPad by heading to Settings > Display & Brightness and selecting Dark.

Now, every time you open a Google app, it'll automatically switch to Dark mode -- or Light mode if you've selected that. However, if you'd like to use Dark mode only when you're using a specific Google app and use Light mode otherwise, follow the steps we've outlined below instead.

Open Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides on your iPhone or iPad.

If you haven't used the mobile app before, you'll be prompted to sign in. To do so, tap the Sign In button at the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Now, you can tap the Continue As [Your Name] button or if you'd like to sign in with another Google account, tap Select another account instead.

Tap the profile icon at the top-right corner of the screen.

Now, tap [Docs/Sheets/Slides] settings and then tap Theme.

You should see three different options on the next screen –- Light, Dark, and System Default. Simply choose Dark.

iOS System Data bug stealing your iPhone storage? Here are 5 solutions [U]

Avatar for Michael Potuck

There’s been an iOS bug for years that gobbles up a big percentage of an iPhone’s available storage. The issue persists in iOS 17.5.1 (and beyond) but fortunately, there are solutions that don’t involve wiping your iPhone. Here’s how to fix the iPhone System Data storage bug.

Update 6/25/24: Bugs are normal for betas, but we’ve noticed the System Data issue remains with the second iOS 18 beta. My iPhone System Data use jumped up from 8 to 35 GB while one of my teammates’ usage rocketed up to 140 GB.

Across Apple’s Community forums , Reddit , and more, iOS users have complained about the iPhone System Data storage bug for years (some reports date back to iOS 13). I haven’t had trouble with the bug until iOS 17.3-17.5 where I’ve seen up to 60 GB of storage eaten up by iOS System Data.

And it’s not just a reporting bug, the storage used by System Data is unusable. Unlike the cache in individual iOS apps or Apple apps like Safari, there’s no button to quickly empty System Data. Here’s how Apple describes what it’s used for:

System Data includes caches, logs and other resources currently in use by the system. This value will fluctuate according to system needs.

Apple hasn’t offered an official solution to the problem, but there are several ways to resolve the issue. We’ll start from the simplest and quickest option to more involved tactics.

How to fix the iPhone System Data storage bug

You can see how much storage System Data is using on your iPhone by heading to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Go to the very bottom > System Data

  • Head back to iPhone Storage > System Data to see if that’s helped
  • This alone has worked to reduce my System Data by over 50 GB (but sometimes in days or weeks it will inflate again with further restarts helping)
  • Head to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages > 1 year or 30 Days
  • Some users report having success with deleting and reinstalling Apple TV to clear the cache and doing the same with apps like Instagram, TikTok, Discord, Slack, etc.
  • Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data (note: this impacts any sites you were logged into, etc.)
  • Via Reddit user Vertsix , there is a more complex “date trick” that seems to work reliably to purge iOS System Data – make sure to follow the steps as described to avoid losing iMessages in the process

Apple targets google chrome with safari privacy ads.

Apple takes shot at Google in very public way

When it comes to mobile browsers, there are just two that matter: Chrome and Safari have 90% market share between them. And so when Apple takes shots at alternative browsers targeting iPhone users, it’s taking those shots at Google and Google alone.

That’s the context behind Apple’s latest home town privacy stunt. As reported by SFGate , “Apple has switched one of its most prominent billboards in San Francisco to a new advertising campaign, and it appears to include a dig at a Bay Area tech rival.”

When Apple says Safari is “a browser that’s actually private,” it’s issuing a very blunt warning about its rival, the only other mobile browser of any significance.

The warning itself is no surprise—let’s be clear, if privacy is your priority it’s very unlikely you’re defaulting to Google Chrome. In its normal mode, tracking cookies are proving to have cockroach-like survival skills , while in its quasi-private “incognito mode,” it remains unclear quite how incognito that really is.

As ESET’s Jake Moore explains, “Google revealed earlier this year that it collects your data if you use Google Chrome, even if you use Incognito Mode. Personal data is so valuable to companies and when terms and conditions are so difficult to understand, it can be easy for users to simply allow companies to collect data at their will.”

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

“There’s no direct reference to Google, of course,” SFGate says of the new billboard, “but it’s impossible not to read the advertisement as anything but a thrown gauntlet against the Mountain View tech giant and its popular Chrome browser.”

Chrome’s tracking cookies will be here until at least early 2025. Recent reports suggest that some form of AI search across user search histories might follow, along with the so-called Privacy Sandbox—which is Google’s attempt to replace tracking cookies with something less awful, albeit its objectives remain the same.

On the spin side, Chrome is an excellent browser—fast, multi-featured and continually updating with new options. It’s not surprising it has approaching 3-billion users. But it has a complex engine that underpins its front-end, and that has been the subject of high-profile, exploited vulnerabilities, far beyond anything we’ve seen with Apple’s Safari in recent years. Last month saw four Chrome zero-days confirmed, and this month the browser’s extensions have come under attack for reported risks.

In reality, Google is in something of a bind. Safari is a browser whereas Chrome is a front-end for Google’s trillion-dollar marketing machine. It cannot turn off tracking by default without an alternative that seeks to track in different ways. Not only would that kill its own golden goose, but it would also cause uproar across the wider industry. Just look at the current back and forth on tracking cookie deprecation.

Safari is not perfect but has been designed with a different mindset. “Safari can also track user activity but offers better settings to protect users and their identities,” Moore says. It doesn’t have all the baggage to contend with and can go head-to-head with smaller competitors such as Firefox and Brave which push privacy as a USP.

This Chrome versus Safari trade-off is complicated, of course, by Google’s securing the default search slot on iPhones. But searching within Safari is a much more private experience than using the same search technology in Chrome.

Unless there are very specific reasons to use Chrome, iPhone users should indeed default to Safari. It is fairly private by default, and its privacy mode is much better than Chrome’s—it even deletes traces between tabs, within sessions, unlike Chrome.

“If you have an Incognito window open and you open another one,” Google explains , “your private browsing session will continue in the new window. To exit Incognito mode, close all Incognito windows.” Contrast this with Safari. “Browsing initiated in one tab is isolated from browsing initiated in another tab,” Apple says , “so websites you visit can’t track your browsing across multiple sessions.”

And that little detail neatly sums up the difference. This is an Apple philosophy more than anything else. While Apple’s Californian billboard might appear trivial, there’s a lot going on behind it.
