Sequoia Grove

8338 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 944-2945

Why Guests Love It: Classic Cabernets, Boutique Feel, Food & Wine Pairings

Sequoia Grove is almost the little engine that could in Napa, not because it’s any less mighty but because it’s lowkey and relaxed. It’s definitely worth stopping in, though, because the wood-timber building surrounded by sequoias and cypresses gives a distinctive Northern Californian feel. Everything produced is fantastic but take note of the quintessential cedar notes in their Cabs. They’re a standout.

Grgich Hills

1829 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 963-2784

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Picnic Tastings, Eco-Focused

Named after its founders, Mike Grgich and Austin Hills, Grgich Hills is one of the more legendary wineries in Napa. Founded in 1977, it has consistently produced stellar wines to be tasted in an equally stellar stone building. Bonus: As of 2006, it uses only estate-grown fruit from its organic, biodynamic, and solar powered winery.

Corison Winery

987 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-0826

Why Guests Love It: Critically Acclaimed Wines, Female Winemaker, Vineyard Views

True trailblazers seem in short supply these days but thankfully Cathy Corison is still here. Year in and year out, she crafts award-winning Cabs from specific vineyard designations. She also produces a stunning Gewürztraminer and Riesling, both of which sing when paired with food. Be sure to snap up what you can because her wines consistently sell out.

401 St Helena Hwy South, St Helena

(707) 967-2626

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Artwork, Female Winemaker, Exceptional Wines

If the whimsical rabbit sculpture isn’t enough to make you stop, the wines most certainly will! Kathryn Hall comes by her craft genetical, having worked in her family’s vineyards north in Mendocino before striking out on her own. And although the Cabs are fabulous, cross the varietal line and taste their Merlots. You’ll be wowed.

The Salon at Heitz Cellar

436 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-2047

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Cheese & Charcuterie Boards, Age-Worthy Wines

Heitz has been around since 1961 – yes, you read that correctly. Everything about Heitz speaks to tradition, from the vineyard selections to the woodblock-esque labels. It’s worth stocking up here and laying some down to age because Heitz is known to develop beautifully for years.

Freemark Abbey

3022 St Helena Hwy N, St Helena

(800) 963-9698

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Stunning Architecture, Library Wines

Housed in a historic stone building that dates back to 1899, Freemark Abbey has consistently been a winery for over a century (except that during that little hiccup known as Prohibition). It further cemented its name in oenological history by being one of only twelve wineries invited to compete in the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Today, the wines remain standouts and tasting here brings guests on a trip through Napa history.

Sterling Vineyards

1111 W Dunaweal Lane, Calistoga

(800) 726-6136

Why Guests Love It: Breathtaking Views, Tram Rides, Award Winning Wines

Sterling Vineyards unfortunately sustained significant damage during the Glass Fire of 2020 and has since been undergoing reconstruction. The good news for everyone is that it is due to reopen in the Spring of 2023! Sterling has been a longtime favorite because of the stunning views. Plan ahead to book a tour that includes a tram ride to the top of the vista point and sip through their lineup. It’s worth the wait.

Tank Garage Winery

1020 Foothill Blvd, Calistoga

(707) 942-8265

Why Guests Love It: Art Deco Architecture, Intriguing Wines, Small Production

Of all wine tasting experiences through Napa, Tank Garage is probably the most unique because it’s located in a 1930s Art Deco gas station! Tank isn’t for the faint-of-heart – the people there are known for sprinkling salty language around, but they sure provide a fun experience. The wines are just as interesting with everything from orange pét-nat to carbonic Grenache.

Larkmead Vineyards

1100 Larkmead Lane, Calistoga

(707) 942-0167

(707) 963-5188

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Organic Farming, Warm Hospitality

Although technically in another town, ZD is just down the road from Mumm and is definitely worth the stop. While ZD may be smaller than some of the huge Napa wineries, it is no less impressive and produces rich, luscious wines that manage to maintain perfect balance. Travel Logistics: Getting To and Around Napa

Napa the city is towards the southern end of Napa the valley and is only about an hour north of San Francisco. Visitors coming from further afield can fly to either San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport and drive from there. Since it is a quick jaunt from the Bay Area, it tends to be very busy on the weekends so midweek tastings often are the most relaxing (and available). You can check current flight deals into either airport right here.

Napa is also quite close to Sonoma Valley, which runs parallel on the west. However, mountain passes between the two are often very windy and can be quite dangerous to navigate, particularly at night. We recommend focusing on one valley or the other to fully enjoy the experience. Another great option is to leverage Green Dream Tours’ expertise to get a taste of both Napa and Sonoma on the same day. They offer round-trip transport from San Francisco, stopping at some exceptional boutique wineries in Sonoma and Napa.

Each option has its advantages and drawbacks, but it’s crucial to ensure responsible and safe transportation, especially if you plan to consume alcohol during your tastings. We give Winetravelers plenty of options in this guide to get around to Napa’s best wineries safely. Ask us any questions or for recommendations in the guide’s comments.

Our Previous Guests’ Experiences

Tripadvisor reviews.

We appreciated getting an overview of what to look for and expect on the following days. Paul was a great tour guide and really made the trip even more enjoyable.

The best part was driving around Napa in the open-air trolley and hearing our guide Richard give us facts about the land. It was interesting and very scenic. I can’t imagine doing a wine tour on a bus when you can do this instead!

Great way to see multiple wineries in one day without having to plan meals and all the visits ourselves. Wineries were great, food and wine were amazing, the trolley was a fun way to travel.

Definitely recommend it if you are visiting for the first time. It’s a great way to visit a few wineries worry-free!

Mallory Shull

This was my very favorite experience in Napa! The trolley was such a fun way to see more of Napa Valley and truly experience different wineries (and not worry about driving!! :-))

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Frequently Asked Questions

Plan for your ride by browsing our frequently asked questions below and visiting the FAQ page for in-depth answers.

Is the Napa Valley Wine Train wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the Napa Valley Wine Train is wheelchair accessible, but it is an antique train, and as such there are some unique challenges that persons with mobility limitations should be aware of:

  • It is a few hundred feet from the ADA-accessible parking spaces to the Front Desk.
  • Boarding the train requires passengers to climb some rather steep stairs. The tallest of these steps is 9.5 inches tall. The steps are slightly recessed, which some guests may find challenging. There are both right and left handrails. Passengers unable to climb stairs may board the train via a manual lift.
  • Because we cannot guarantee that personal wheelchairs will fit on the Train, if you require the assistance of a wheelchair, we strongly recommend that you use our transfer chair, since this is the only wheelchair that we are confident will fit in the train.
  • The Gourmet Car is accessible with our transfer chair.
  • There is no way to access the Vista Dome car without climbing stairs. Inside the Vista Dome car there are seven steps, each 8 inches tall. There is a handrail on the right side only.
  • Moving in a wheelchair while the train is in motion is difficult, and guests who require a wheelchair should move only when advised to do so by our staff.
  • If a guest with a mobility limitation wishes to move about the train, they must be assisted by a member of their party.
  • At this time, we cannot accommodate guests with mobility preferences on any of our tours.
  • The restrooms on board the train are not wheelchair accessible. You will need to be able to get out of your chair in order to use the restrooms.

Despite the unique challenges presented by our historic train, many guests with mobility limitations ride the Napa Valley Wine Train. If you have specific needs or concerns, please contact us by phone at 1-800-427-4124 .

Can I bring my service animal onto the Napa Valley Wine Train?

Yes, The Napa Valley Wine Train accommodates service animals.

While we do not discourage guests with service animals from coming on the train, guests should be aware of the following factors:

  • The motion of the train, and the unnatural, high-pitched metallic sounds that the Train makes as it goes over joints in the tracks may make some animals very uncomfortable.
  • The entire Train is only about 8 feet across and a walkway runs through it. This means that service animals will always be within about 3 feet of a frequently used walkway. Animals not accustomed to heavy and frequent foot traffic may be very uncomfortable. Service animals must not sit or lay down in a walkway as this presents a hazard to other guests and the animal.
  • Napa Valley Wine Train staff have been trained not to touch the service animal, but other customers may not understand the role of a service animal and may want to touch the service animal.
  • The owner of the service animal must provide all of the care that the service animal requires. Any food or water which the animal requires, and appropriate containers for serving food and water to the animal, should be provided by the owner. Sanitary toilet arrangements must also be made by the owner of the animal, and, in the interest of the health and safety of our guests, the staff of the train will not handle or dispose of animal droppings or urine for the owner.

Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have regarding your service animal.

Can I bring an animal on board the train?

Per state law, animals are not allowed on board the Napa Valley Wine Train, with the exception of service animals. If you have a service animal, please see the next question.

How many trains and experiences are offered daily/year-round?

The Wine Train operates year-round, largely comprised of 2 trains daily for lunch service and 1 train on select nights for dinner. The smaller Legacy Experience train hosts everyone on board enjoying the same experience departing daily at 10:15 am. The larger train hosts a variety of different experiences in our 9-passenger cars for lunch departing at 11:30 am and dinner at 6:20 pm.

Is the Napa Valley Wine Train family-friendly?

Children are welcome on board, and select packages have special rates. We do not offer a children’s menu on board the train. However, we can adapt many of our menu items. Our reservation agents are happy to provide parents with more information.

Is wine included in each Wine Train experience?

Wine Train guests are greeted with a welcome glass of sparkling wine upon boarding. Additional wine, wine flights, cocktails, beer, specialty drinks, and bottled water is available for purchase on board throughout your journey. A selection of experiences includes wine with your experience such as Tasting on the Rails, Legacy and Grgich tastings. Additional wine, wine flights, cocktails, beer, specialty drinks, and bottled water is available for purchase on board throughout your journey.

Does the Napa Valley Wine Train stop at wineries?

The Napa Valley Wine Train offers the Legacy Experience and Grgich Hills Estate Tasting, which includes disembarking and winery tours and tastings. Explore our experiences to learn more about these journeys.

What can I expect once I arrive at McKinstry Street Station?

After checking in at the reception desk, feel free to explore the station. Before boarding the train, visit the Artist’s Cafe for a mimosa or cup of hot coffee, stroll through the Wine and Retail Gift Store and snag some Instagram-worthy photos at one of our compelling spots while anticipating the arrival of the train to the station. Please wait for your seating section to be called before proceeding to the platform to board and then smile for our photo team in front of the train at boarding to receive a complimentary digital photo with every journey.

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

The 8 Best Napa Wine Tours

purple grains hanging on a vine in Napa Valley

Napa Valley is easily one of the most famous wine-producing regions in the world, and last year nearly four million people headed there — it is big business for Northern California!

Of course, if you plan on spending some time in Napa Valley and nearby Sonoma, you’ll most likely want to explore some of the 600 wineries in the area. A great way to do this — both to get some local, insider knowledge and so that there’s no need to drink and drive — is to take a Napa wine tour.

There are nearly as many wine tour options as there are vineyards. I’ve listed some of my favorites here, and you can decide which fits your style and, more importantly, your budget. Just remember that you’ll usually also have to pay tasting fees on top of the tour costs — these vary between $20 and $40 — though many will waive that fee if you buy some wine. Also don’t forget, especially if you’re coming from outside the United States, that you’ll need to be 21 or over to join these tours, though some allow children to tag along.

1. Napa Valley Wine Trolley

If you’re after something a bit different, then the Napa Valley Wine Trolley is a good way to go. Instead of a regular tour bus, you’ll ride on a replica of a cable car. It’s an open-air car, of course, so make sure you pick the right weather to try this.

Tours leave from the Oxbow Market in Napa; a $99 tour includes four wineries and a casual picnic-style lunch, plus unlimited bottled water and soft drinks between tastings. You can upgrade to the full-day Castle tour ($139), which includes a two-hour stop and tasting at Castello di Amorosa.

2. Napa Valley Bike Tours

Of course, being a valley full of vineyards, Napa is a really scenic place, so exploring it by bicycle is a great option. Napa Valley Bike Tours offers either guided or self-guided rides, leaving from their store in Yountville. The popular half-day guided tour is $124 per person, with two winery visits and a great guide who’ll give you the full story of the area.

The handy part about the self-guided tours is that besides being able to visit the wineries you choose at your own pace, you still get a box lunch, and any wine you buy will be picked up for you (riding with wine in your backpack gets old really fast). Self-guided tours cost $114 per person and also include comfy bikes, helmets, and all the planning info you need.

3. Calistoga Bikeshop

Another bicycle option is Calistoga Bikeshop , a popular rental shop that also runs guided day tours for $150, including a hybrid bike, a picnic lunch, and pick-up for any wine you buy. The guides plan a unique route depending on what the group members want, starting from their shop in Calistoga.

If you have an extra day in the area and don’t need more wine, Calistoga also offers great mountain biking trips to the Palisades or along the Oat Hill Mine Trail.

4. Platypus Wine Tours

Platypus brands itself as the “anti-wine-snob wine tour,” so if you want to have a fun day learning more about wine, then this is a good choice. (The name is memorable, but you won’t actually see a platypus anywhere in Napa Valley, in case you’re wondering.)

Platypus runs small-group trips, taking in four wineries for $110 (including a picnic lunch), focusing on small and medium-sized, usually family-owned wineries. You can choose from tours centered on Sonoma Valley, Napa Valley, or North Sonoma.

5. Active Wine Adventures

As the name suggests, Active Wine Adventures offers tours that include more than just wine tasting, so it’s a great way to explore Napa Valley. For example, the Hike & Wine tours start with a two-hour hike in some of the valley’s beautiful landscapes and move on to a lunch and winery tasting experience. These cost $139 plus lunch because you can choose from a high-end restaurant lunch or a vineyard picnic. They offer similar tours in the Sonoma area, too.

6. Green Dream Tours

Try some wine and help the world. Green Dream has a focus on sustainability: besides using green business practices, it also buys carbon offsets to balance its use of fuel. Their Napa Valley tours ($144, $154 on weekends) are among the few where the tasting fees at three boutique wineries are included.

Green Dream also offers a combo tour, taking in three wineries across Sonoma and Napa Valley, with lunch at the Oxbow Public Market ($139 weekdays, $149 weekends). For visitors to San Francisco, there’s a combo with a tour of Alcatraz plus two Sonoma boutique wineries, for $179.

7. Small Lot Wine Tours

If you’re coming by car to the Napa Valley region, then Small Lot can be a really budget-friendly way to enjoy a wine tour. They provide a tour guide who’ll drive your car for you for the day, and design a tour route just right for you, depending on the kind of wine you want to taste, what you want to do for lunch, and whether you’re planning on buying wine. At $50 per hour (with a four-hour minimum), if you’ve got a car full of friends, this can work out to be one of the cheapest ways to explore Napa but still have local expert advice.

8. Napa Valley Wine Country Tours

Napa Valley Wine Country Tours offer full-day trips from San Francisco, including a Golden Gate Bridge photo opportunity, to four wineries in the Napa and Sonoma regions. Tours include a picnic lunch and are usually $119 per person (sometimes there are $99 specials on the website).

For something a bit different, they also run wine tours around the Napa Valley in an open-top convertible limousine, including a castle visit, for $150.

There are so many options for touring the Napa Valley and experiencing all the wine culture the area has to offer, depending on your tastes and preferences. These suggestions should ensure that you have a great day out exploring one of the world’s most famous wine regions.

Book Your Trip to Napa Valley: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner or Momondo to find a cheap flight. They are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned. Start with Skyscanner first though because they have the biggest reach!

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • Safety Wing (for everyone below 70)
  • Insure My Trip (for those over 70)
  • Medjet (for additional repatriation coverage)

Napa Valley Wine Collector’s Tour

napa valley wine tasting tours

What do Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Harlan, Colgin, Bryant Family, and Scarecrow have in common? They were once relatively unknown wine names. Due to their limited production, they were only attainable through word-of-mouth connections. Before receiving 97-100 points from Robert Parker or the Spectator, they already had a loyal following, buying up almost every allocation. Of course, once these rare small-production wines became coveted brands, the mailing lists were closed, and the prices were in the stratosphere. Even if you can move from a waiting list to an active allocation list, the amount you can buy is limited.

For these reasons, we created customized Napa Valley wine tours for collectors, with unique insider access to up-and-coming luxury wine brands .

Beau Wine Tours is best known for our exceptional Napa Valley Wine Collector’s Tour, where the true wine connoisseur can have the ultimate Napa Valley wine-tour experience. These personally customized (and exclusive) tours are for serious collectors looking for ultra-premium, limited-production Cabernet wines to stock their cellars. These next-generation or soon-to-be “cult wine” brands often require an introduction or referral from a trusted source. We have personally developed relationships with some of the most celebrated winemakers and vintners of Napa Valley cult Cabernets. Through our exclusive Napa wine tours for collectors, we can introduce you to the next generation of collectible wine brands, often working with the same winemakers of established cult wine names. These are the true “hidden gems.”

A Wine Collector’s Tour includes intimate private Napa Valley wine tastings, a customized lunch experience at a private estate, and opportunities to tour vineyards, caves, and cellars with the principal people involved in making wine. These private, off-the-beaten-path Napa wine tours go to the heart of Napa Valley for the most intimate touring experience.

GET A QUICK ESTIMATE

Napa Valley, California’s first American Viticulture Area (AVA ), is divided into 16 nested appellations, all offering unique opportunities for Napa Valley wine tours. Ranging from 3,300 to over 16,000 acres, eight of these appellations are known as the Valley Floor AVAs. The Mayacamas and Vaca Mountains surround them.

Valley Floor Napa Wine Tours

Calistoga is one of our most popular choices for a Napa Valley wine-tasting tour. This captivating appellation is located at the valley’s narrow northern end, covers seven square miles, and experiences significant diurnal variations due to gentle northwestern breezes. Early pioneers like Eisele Vineyard and Chateau Montelena produced dense, earthy Cabernets with mineral accents. Today, newer producers like Maybach and Perliss source grapes from Calistoga, producing exquisite wines worth trying.

Saint Helena

The valley near St. Helena narrows south of Calistoga; it is protected from the bay’s wind and fog and, for that reason, retains warmth. St. Helena is home to wineries like Spottswoode, Charles Krug, and Raymond, each with a unique terroir and highly suitable for a day of wine tasting. During your Napa Valley wine tour of this appellation, you’ll learn more about vineyards in the center, which get ample sunlight that results in supple wines. In contrast, those in the western foothills produce robust wines with earthy and mineral notes. The region is ideal for Bordeaux varieties, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah.

Rutherford is the center of Napa Valley, geographically and historically, and is home to renowned wineries like Staglin, Scarecrow, and Dana. Cabernet thrives in Rutherford’s rich, well-drained soils, producing wines with concentration and depth known for their “Rutherford dust” flavor. This appellation is perfect for a personalized Napa Valley wine-tasting experience.

Popular among our seekers of the mighty Cabernets the region is known for, Oakville is renowned for its high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon. It has the highest concentration of benchmark estates in the valley, including Screaming Eagle, Opus One, and PlumpJack. Wine tasting in Napa Valley’s Oakville appellation offers wines that are typically rich, dense, and complex, with firmer tannins than Rutherford or Stags Leap versions. These wines often exhibit herbal and minty flavors.

Yountville is the birthplace of Napa’s wine industry. In 1836, George Yount laid the foundation for the town of Yountville by planting the valley’s first vineyards. The region later became Napanook Vineyard. Wine-tasting tours in Napa Valley often include this historic appellation. Today, Yountville is a picturesque wine-tasting town with plenty of excellent wineries and restaurants to visit.

Stags Leap District

If “bold” and “powerful” are your desire for a wine-tasting experience in Napa Valley, the Stags Leap District is precisely the right place to visit. These smooth and elegant wines are often described as “an iron fist in a velvet glove.” They are shaped, in part, by the region’s knolls and the Palisades within Robert Louis Stevenson State Park, which create a wind tunnel effect that can significantly extend the growing season. Several renowned wineries in this district typically visited on a wine-tasting tour of Napa, including Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Reguschi Winery, Taylor Family Vineyards, and Shafer Vineyards.

Oak Knoll District

Oak Knoll District, located at the southern end of central Napa Valley, offers exquisite choices for a Napa wine tour. It is known for its relatively cooler climate and long growing season. Oak Knoll is one of Napa Valley’s flatter appellations, with notable wineries such as Fortunati Vineyards, Matthiasson, and Trefethen Winery. Just north of Napa, regular fog in the Oak Knoll district decreases temperatures, resulting in more elegant and understated wines. A wine-tasting tour in Napa Valley AVA that includes the Oak Knoll district never disappoints.

Our concierge team is ready to create a memorable wine-tasting tour of Napa Valley, including these and other exceptional wineries along the Napa Valley floor.

Coombsville Napa Wine Tours

Coombsville AVA, the coldest grape-growing region in Napa, offers a unique climate that sets it apart. With temperatures ten degrees cooler than most areas, it boasts an extended growing season. This allows the grapes to mature longer on the vine, leading to a more even ripening process and complex flavors. For wine enthusiasts seeking a unique wine-tasting tour with a distinct climate within the Napa Valley, Coombsville is a must-visit.

Just some of the notable Coombsville wineries your Napa wine-tasting tour may include:

  • Ackerman Family Vineyards
  • Ancien Wines
  • Arrow&Branch
  • Black Cat Vineyard
  • Caldwell Vineyard and Winery
  • Farella Vineyard
  • Marita’s Vineyard
  • Meteor Vineyard
  • Palmaz Vineyards
  • Porter Family Vineyards
  • Covert Estate

Our dedicated concierge team is ready to assist you in planning a day of personalized exploration and Napa Valley wine tasting.

Diamond Mountain District is perfect as a Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc wine-tasting destination for private wine-tasting tours of Napa Valley.

Diamond Mountain District Napa Valley Wine Tours

The region was rejuvenated in the late 1960s by a few ambitious growers, including Jack and Jamie Davies of Schrambsberg Winery, who brought sparkling wine to the area. They purchased their historic property in 1965, followed by Al Brounstein, the founder of Diamond Creek Winery. He also recognized the potential of the mountain and bought 79 acres in 1968, significantly impacting the region’s renewal.

A private wine-tasting tour of Napa would only be complete with a bit of history and the Diamond Mountain delivers. From rich, firmly structured Cabernets to exquisitely aging sparkling wines, this district is plentiful in fine wine and history!

Some of Diamond Mountain District’s notable wineries that your private wine tour of Napa Valley may include:

  • Andrew Geoffrey Vineyards
  • Constant Diamond Mountain Vineyards
  • Checkerboard Vineyards
  • Diamond Creek Vineyards
  • Dyer Vineyard
  • Reverie on Diamond Mountain
  • Schramsberg
  • Von Strasser Winery

Howell Mountain Napa Wines Tasting Tours

Nestled on the hillsides of the northeast side of the Napa Valley, Howell Mountain AVA has earned a reputation for its intensely flavorful wines. Located five miles northeast of St. Helena, this bountiful mountain appellation houses 45 vintners and growers, each producing unique versions of robust and complex red wines. This area offers some unique opportunities for Napa Valley wine-tasting tours in the region.

Immerse yourself in the grandeur of the vineyards as you embark on private Napa Valley wine-tasting tours while enjoying panoramic views of the valley floor. The sun’s gentle touch on the vineyards accentuates the area’s natural splendor, rising above the fog and casting a dramatic contrast against the valley below.

With the guidance of your dedicated private wine concierge, a tailor-made Napa wine tour on Howell Mountain awaits. Discover the hidden treasure of Howell Mountain wines, a region rich in history and yet to be fully explored. Once the stomping ground of the most successful winemakers during the 1880s boom, this area made its mark in 1998 when two local winemakers won a bronze medal at the Paris World Competition. Each release of new vintages is a moment of celebration, a testament to the area’s enduring allure and the wines’ ability to enchant both returning and first-time visitors seeking a unique Napa wine tour experience.

Howell Mountain is a region that wine enthusiasts cannot overlook, and a Napa wine tour through it promises the ultimate wine experience. Its storied past, natural splendor, and intensely flavorful wines make it an essential destination. Our concierge team is eager to introduce you to its exceptional wineries, making it a part of your exclusive, personalized Napa Valley wine tour.

Howell Mountain’s notable wineries include:

  • Arkenstone Vineyards
  • Bravante Vineyards
  • Bremer Family Winery
  • Clark-Claudon Vineyards
  • Haber Family Vineyards
  • La Jota Vineyards
  • Lamborn Family Vineyards
  • Neal Family Vineyards

Los Carneros Wine Tours

Los Carneros AVA was officially recognized in 1983 and included parts of Napa Valley and Sonoma. The area’s climate is relatively cooler due to the marine fog and breezes off San Pablo Bay. Carneros is unique among North American appellations in that it spans two counties: Napa and Sonoma. As such, it is not a “nested” AVA of Napa Valley. The Napa part of the area is named “Los Carneros” and is a popular choice among the Napa Valley wine tour clients who desire a unique wine-tasting experience.

Los Carneros is a prized Napa Valley wine-tour destination. Low rolling hills above San Pablo Bay and Mount Veeder characterize it. Due to the cooling influence of the Bay and regular fog and ocean breezes, Carneros is known as “Napa’s Burgundy” since Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive here. Multiple sparkling houses produce world-class sparkling wine, so calling it “Napa’s Champagne” would be more accurate. Merlot has gained attention recently for doing well in the warmer pockets of the region and thriving in the clay soils. Many wine enthusiasts enjoy wine tasting in Napa, specifically for the unique attributes of Los Carneros.

Compared to Napa Valley, Los Carneros is much cooler but still considerably warmer than the Sonoma Coast. As a result, the Pinot Noirs tend to be comparatively ripe, round, and rich with an intense core of cherry fruit. The Chardonnays can be both powerful and bright with pronounced minerality. One interesting fact that your wine concierge will explain more about during your customized Napa wine tour is that Los Carneros AVA was the first to be purely defined by climate rather than geographical characteristics. Carneros offers Napa wine tour seekers a perfect day of wine tasting.

Some Notable Los Carneros Wineries Include:

  • Domaine Carneros
  • Hyde Vineyards
  • Bouchaine Vineyards
  • Etude Winery
  • Tres Perlas Brown Ranch
  • Truchard Vineyards
  • John Anthony Church Vineyard
  • Saintsbury Winery
  • Cuvaison Estate
  • Hudson Ranch
  • Artesa Winery

The Spring Mountain District , behind the town of Saint Helena, boasts a plethora of small vineyards that offer first-class, private Napa wine-tasting tours. By booking chauffeured transportation, visitors can enjoy scenic views of the beautiful hillside terrain, which ranges from vineyards on slopes to rolling hills. This region’s exclusivity requires planning visits in advance due to the personal touch that each winery offers.

Spring Mountain District Napa Valley Wine Tours

Your private wine concierge will dot your wine tour of Napa with just the right amount of information to satisfy your curiosity. One such fact is that due to the harsher climatic conditions that challenge the vines, the vineyards demand meticulous attention from viticulturists and winemakers. The grapes are often hand-tilled, a further testament to the dedication and care in each bottle. Despite these challenges, the region’s fruitfulness is evident in producing long-lived, intense wines, a testament to the passion and commitment of the winemakers.

We highly recommend that visitors set aside an entire day to immerse themselves in a private Napa wine-tasting tour that includes the Spring Mountain District. After a day of indulgence, a complete picnic, meticulously arranged by our concierge and tour guides, will await you and your party. This thoughtful arrangement ensures that our Napa wine tour guests can savor their lunch without worrying about navigating the hilly terrain, allowing for a truly relaxing experience.

Spring Mountain District wineries near St. Helena include:

  • Barnett Vineyards
  • Behrens Family Winery
  • Fantesca Estate & Winery
  • Juslyn Vineyards
  • Paloma Vineyard
  • Peacock Family Vineyard
  • Pride Mountain Vineyards
  • Schweiger Vineyards
  • Sherwin Family Vineyards

“Best wine tour I’ve ever done. I sprung for the private version, led by Dylan, and I couldn’t be more pleased or recommend a service any more. The entire day and itinerary was executed without a hitch. Dylan himself was amazing, and quickly cured any reservations I had about spending a day in Napa with someone other than my wife haha. He was an excellent driver, expertly knowledgeable in wine, funny, witty, accommodating, and not imposing at all. This was a once in a lifetime type experience.”

“Best wine tour I’ve done. Our driver, Robin, was both knowledgeable and easygoing, and he created an environment that was light and comfortable for the whole group. There was a good balance throughout the day of group activity, education, and free time. I also found this to be one of the more economical tours. I will definitely recommend this Green Dreams to friends and family and plan to use this company again in the future.”

– Sarah, B. Ramsey Yelp

“Green Dream Tours was a great way to spend the day. We had an amazing time on the tour. We loved Cline and ended up buying a case of wine. Our tour guide Dillion really made the entire trip. He was so fun and very personable. Hopefully you will get Dillion as your tour guide. Highly recommended, this is one you don’t want to miss!”

“would suggest to all our friends”

“This tour was an absolute joy. Jeffrey was a treat. He was so knowledgeable, friendly, and welcoming . The Napa winery was beautiful. The plaza in Sonoma had many food choices. Jeffrey did not stir us wrong with recommendations for ice cream and other tasting rooms. The last winery was in Sonoma and the views were amazing. On the way back to San Francisco, we stopped at the Golden Gate Bridge and got great photos. I can not say enough about this experience and would suggest to all our friends.”

“Was wonderful, informative & fun”

“The Small Group Wine tour to Sonoma and Napa, guided by Robin was wonderful. Only 11 on our very informative & fun tour . Each winery we visited discussed different aspects of wine making, it’s history and tasting. Loved going to smaller wineries to taste wines that we typically wouldn’t have a chance to try and being the only group at the winery.”

Napa Private and tailored tours to individuals visiting Napa Valley.

The famous Greek playwright Euripides once said, “ Where there is no wine, there is no love .” At Napa Valley, America’s own ‘wine country,’ we agree 100%.

Whether you’re a full-blown oenophile, a first-timer, or just someone who wants an excuse to drink in the middle of the day, a Napa Valley wine tour offers something for everybody; throw in the word “ luxury, ” and you have yourself a match made in vino heaven. One of the reasons why a luxury wine tour is recommended is because someone has already done the homework for you and has a tried and tested plan for you to get the best wine-tasting experience possible.

Established in 1986, California Wine Tours boasts of extensive service know-how of Napa wineries and vineyards, which has captured the hearts of many who search for that VIP experience that only Napa Wine Tours and Sonoma Wine Tasting Tour can offer.

So, “ What do Napa private and tailored tours to individuals visiting Napa Valley have to offer? ”

Napa Valley was officially recognized as the go-to destination for wine-lovers in 1976 at the Judgement of Paris, where it bested France in both the cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay categories.

Experience the Ultimate Napa Valley Wine Tour…for 2

Of course, Napa Valley and the Sonoma wine region were already well-established regions with many wineries consistently churning out award-winning labels. So, it makes sense to go for Napa Valley wine tours. In case you were wondering, this is what to expect at a wine tour of Napa Valley (with high-end chauffeured transportation).

11:00 am: Pick Up at the Silverado Resort and Spa

The journey starts at Silverado Resort and Spa . Just an hour north of San Francisco, this luxury hotel is located smack in the middle of the world-famous Napa Valley and around 400 wineries. The resort is the perfect place to start your Napa Valley wine tour since it keeps you pampered and relaxed with massages, facials, manicures, and pedicures, so you look your best on the tour.

In case you were wondering, the Silverado Resort and Spa is also home to two PGA championship golf courses, 13 lighted tennis courts, and biking and hiking trails if that’s your jam. But, the main attraction is, of course, the wine tours with 400 wineries to choose from, which ensures excitement and adventure around every corner.

California Wine Tours owns and operates the largest and most diverse fleet of luxury vehicles in Northern California, so there’s no need to be surprised when a BMW 7 Series, a full-size luxury sedan, complete with air conditioning, tinted windows, and a professional chauffeur/ tour guide pulls up in the driveway to take you on your tour.

11:30 am to 12:30 pm: Hall St. Helena – Art of Cab Experience

Each tour courtesy of California Wine Tours starts off with a bang at The Art of Cabernet Tasting, a state-of-the-art winemaking facility and hospitality center. Tucked away at the foot of the spectacular Mayacama mountains, this wine destination has been clearly designed to inspire visitors. The facility consists of two Hall wineries and tasting rooms, located on the valley floor at St. Helena and at Rutherford Hills. Since all tastings are private, guests get to enjoy a truly intimate wine tasting experience. For those on tour, Hall’s wines that come highly rated are just a taste of things to come, and at just $40.00 pp (60-minute experience), it’s a real steal for first-timers and wine connoisseurs.

01:00 pm to 02:00 pm: Peju Winery

Peju Winery with sunset

Next stop – The Peju Province Winery , home to exceptional wines from their organically farmed estate vineyard. This is a great place for those who want to enjoy classic Bordeaux varieties in a beautiful setting outside – and socially distanced, of course. Peju Winery offers breathtaking views and an exquisite vino variety but is not pet-friendly (So, pet lovers, take your business elsewhere!)

This wine tasting experience that offers some of the most classic wines and warm hospitality costs just $45.00pp (45-minute experience) and comes complete with appetizer options for lunch. What more could you possibly ask for?

02:30 pm to 3:30 pm: Turnbull Winery $40.00 pp (60-minute experience)

Another must-visit is Turnbull Wine Cellars , which has been offering guests an authentic Napa Valley wine tasting experience for more than 40 years. Turnbull offers beautiful gardens and great-tasting wines (especially the red varietals) that can be enjoyed in a laid-back and comfortable outdoor environment. Known for having some of the best cabs, this charming winery is easily going to make it on your top 10 Napa Valley wineries list, and you’re sure to leave with a few bottles of 2020 Josephine Sauvignon Blanc when the tasting is over. This is, again, another beautiful and elegant winery to visit during your Napa Valley wine tour.

04:00 pm: Drop-off back at Silverado Resort

Like a glass of Château Lafite Rothschild, all good things must come to an end (no matter who’s pouring it). The Napa Private and tailored tours to individuals visiting Napa Valley, complete with high-end chauffeured transportation, is certainly going to be an experience you’re not going to forget long after that bottle of 2020 Josephine Sauvignon Blanc is empty. Overall, the wine tasting tour will be an unforgettable experience, not just because you get to visit some of the best wineries Napa Valley has to offer, but you have the good fortune of visiting those wineries with a fantastic guide/chauffeur.

Luxury Vehicles

California Wine Tours has a diverse fleet with over 100 luxury vehicles , catering to intimate wine tasting outings and lavish group events. Some of the favorites include; the 750LI Black BMW Sedans, Corporate Suburban’s, Limousines, Limousine Vans , Luxury Minibuses, and beautiful full-size Motor Coaches, complete with restrooms. But the highlight of the Napa Valley wine tour has to be the kind, knowledgeable, and professional chauffeur who was assigned as a tour planner and planned the entire tour.

Ending Note

We are living in a post-COVID19 world where personal safety is something that we take very seriously. This is why we work closely with all of our winery partners, which include but aren’t limited to; Castello di Amorosa, Tamber Bey Vineyards, Schramsberg Vineyards, and of course, the winery that bested France – Chateau Montelena Vineyards to ensure a safe, flawless and unforgetful experience for Napa private and tailored tours to individuals visiting Napa Valley.

California Wine Tours goes a step further to welcome our guests and make sure they have a great experience with our dedicated department that assists all of our clients in complete itinerary planning and reservations of our Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley tours.

The 14 Best Wineries in Napa, According to Wine Experts

The top wineries in Napa to swirl and sip.

Oenophiles have been making the pilgrimage to Napa Valley since the 1970s. Encompassing the city of Napa, as well as quaint towns like Rutherford, Yountville, St. Helena, and Calistoga, this epicurean hot spot has gained even more notoriety in recent years as accomplished winemakers and luxury hotels continue to move in.

Despite the influx of buzzy things to see and do — including dining at Michelin-starred restaurants and riding a scenic train by Napa's verdant vineyards — the biggest draw continues to be the wine. And it’s not just about going to the store and picking up a bottle. The whole reason people visit Napa Valley is to savor red, white , and rosé at spectacular wineries , many set on massive vineyards, where the grapes go from vine to glass on the premises (or nearby). But with more than 400 wineries in Napa Valley, the options are almost dizzying. That’s why we’ve consulted with experts, including tastemakers in wine country, to narrow it down to the 14 best wineries in Napa for a tasting. (Just be sure to book in advance as most of our picks require reservations.)

Faust Wines, Coombsville

"The newly unveiled  Faust Haus , a Napa Valley tasting room in St. Helena, is a luscious, black-velvet dreamscape at 2867 St. Helena Highway," Celine Bossart, a sommelier and wine writer, reported for T+L . "The historic hilltop home is whimsical in its starkness, unabashedly Gothic and freshly coated in a shade of inky black paint that only a certain kind of house can pull off." The venue alone is worth the visit, but the wine is just as enticing. In true Napa fashion, Faust's cabernet sauvignon packs a punch, but don't let the merlot-haters in "Sideways" keep you from trying The Lure merlot, which is just as intriguing as the cab sauv and the winery's approachable syrah. Bossart says of the winery on the southern edge of Napa Valley in Coombsville, "Faust Haus is one of Napa’s warmest, most welcoming, and visually striking places to taste wine."

Frog's Leap Winery, Rutherford

Emma K. Morris

Rooted in sustainable, dry-farming practices and traditional winemaking techniques, Frog's Leap produces balanced, terroir-driven wine that continually earns accolades from critics and casual drinkers. Surrounded by 200 acres of vines, the Vineyard House porch is an utterly enchanting setting to enjoy a flight of classics, new releases, or rare vintages, paired with a tasty complimentary snack plate. Grab a glass of your favorite wine for a walk through the organic gardens and fruit orchards.

Tres Sabores, St. Helena

Briana Marie Photography

Family-run, female-led, and dog-friendly Tres Sabores feels like what we’d assume Napa was all about a few decades ago: a dedication to agriculture, the craft of winemaking, and enjoying the fruits of that labor in a beautiful, natural environment. The owner and winemaker, Julie Johnson, will happily show you around the 35-acre estate that spans old vines, gardens, and olive groves and sit down for a tasting (the Burgundian-style zinfandel is particularly memorable) and seasonal lunch afterward.

Realm Cellars, Napa

Courtesy of Realm

If you are in the mood for highly addictive wine, praised by the in-the-know Napa wine community, Realm Cellars in Napa is an obvious choice. The folks at Realm are currently releasing library wines — a rarity and a treat, because it means you get to take home an aged bottle, instead of a newly bottled vintage you have to let sit in your wine fridge for four years. Now, admittedly, these releases are in response to losing the vineyard's 2020 crop to the wildfires that tore through Napa Valley. And yet, Realm saw it as an opportunity to release wines dating back to 2009. That's the kind of innovation you can expect from this vineyard. While Realm's tasting room is still closed as a result of the 2020 wildfires, find these bottles in wine bars and restaurants around town — and let that round out your wine-tasting experience.

Jacob Brown, beverage director at Lazy Bear restaurant in San Francisco, suggests you sip Realm Cellars The Bard — the winery's best seller — at Napa's Torc restaurant. "At Torc, they have a secret menu item (shhhh) of a truffle grilled cheese — get it with a glass of Realm Cellars The Bard," Brown says. "I was fortunate to try this pairing recently, and I have not stopped dreaming about it since. The way The Bard makes the fontina val d’Aosta cheese with Perigord truffles humm is worth the trip to Napa alone."

Tamber Bey Vineyards, Calistoga

Katharina Esterline/EyeEm/Getty Images

Set in the middle of a working horse ranch in off-the-beaten-path Calistoga, family-run Tamber Bey Vineyards offers one of the most unique experiences around. The focus is on wine first, but the owners’ love for all things equestrian adds a wonderfully rustic charm that’s endearing. Guests can tour the production facility, which was originally a covered riding arena, and do a wine and savory cookie pairing in the courtyard of the stables.

Amulet Estate, St. Helena

Courtesy of Amulet Estate

" Amulet Estate  is a brand that embraces the fundamental essence of Napa Valley - a commitment to the highest quality of wines, beginning with curated relationships with some of the most reputable Napa Valley growers, capturing quality in the vineyard and expressing the unique terroir of each site," Emily Rodriguez, the program operations manager at Napa Valley Vintners , tells T+L.

The St. Helena portfolio is known for their expansive cab sauv portfolio, but you'll stay for the chardonnay, with grapes sourced from the Sonoma coast. Rodriguez recommends booking the winemaker-led, private experiences on offer, because they "allow guests to truly appreciate the care and attention that goes into every bottle of wine, while enjoying the peace and privacy of their hillside estate."

 AXR Napa Valley, St. Helena

AXR Napa Valley is a pre-Prohibition estate with a fairy circle of redwoods in the heart of St. Helena. So, from a history and scenery perspective, it’s pretty enchanting. The juxtaposition between heritage and the modern, boutique atmosphere makes for a memorable visit. Winemaker and partner Jean Hoefliger puts his heart and soul into crafting wine. Visitors can sample the flagship lineup and new releases in the main house, private veranda, or outdoor patio.

Cliff Lede Vineyards, Yountville

Conrad J Camit/Getty Images

A gem where winemaking, art, and music coalesce, Cliff Lede Vineyards ranks among the most entertaining estates in Napa Valley. A larger-than-life Two Hearts sculpture stands in the courtyard. Rotating exhibits adorn the walls of the tasting lounge. Vine blocks brandish the names of famous songs like “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Whole Lotta Love.” Aesthetically, it’s a hit with the Instagram crowd. But the wine very much holds its own, especially the flagship Poetry cabernet sauvignon.

Darioush, Napa

Courtesy of Darioush

Led by Shahpar and Darioush Khaledi, Darioush aims to bring Persian winemaking culture to Napa . Their cabernet franc, viognier, pinot noir, and merlot all draw travelers in — especially the oenophiles looking to go beyond cabernet sauvignon sipping. But one of the best experiences you can have at Darioush, which truly sets it apart, is the Culture Wine Lunch.

Eduardo Dingler, vice president of wine at Wine Access , says, "The welcoming hospitality, curated setting, amazing wines, and dare I say, the Michelin-star level of cuisine made the Culture Wine Lunch a highly memorable experience. I’ve been a fan of Darioush wines for years, so pairing them with chef Massey’s world-inspired dishes, with his attention to detail and high-quality ingredients, was simply delightful."

Alpha Omega, St. Helena

Suzanne Becker Bronk/Courtesy of Alpha Omega

Since opening in 2006, Alpha Omega has forged on with a sustainable and quality-over-quantity mindset. Its annual production of 15,000 cases is far less than that churned out by big-name wineries each year. The result? Super-expressive Bordeaux-style wines that taste like the true essence of the land and are best enjoyed on the sunny St. Helena tasting room terrace while gazing at the burbling fountains and Mayacamas Mountains in the distance.

Palmaz Vineyards, Napa

Tucked away on a 600-acre estate a few miles outside of downtown Napa, Palmaz Vineyards proudly fuses tradition and technology. The rolling vineyard landscape is stunning, but the coolest part has to be the private guided tour of the massive, multilevel wine cave, which extends into the rock of Mount George. The innovative gravity-flow winemaking process results in a smooth, nuanced cabernet sauvignon that goes down almost too easily.

Beringer Vineyards, St. Helena

Courtesy of Beringer Vineyards

Beringer Vineyards is a place steeped in firsts. It was one of the first to operate using hand-dug caves and cellars, and the first to give public tours back in 1934. It’s also a great first stop for newcomers to wine country . (The knowledgeable staff will teach you the ins and outs of tasting and happily answer any questions.) Of course, longtime Napa visitors will also appreciate the warm hospitality and impressive array of quality pours.

Cakebread Cellars, Rutherford

Rocco Ceselin

Even with so many other notable grape varietals popping up, Cabernet Sauvignon remains king in Napa Valley. Located along the iconic Highway 29 wine route, Cakebread Cellars has a very notable reputation for producing this widely recognizable homegrown favorite, in addition to excellent chardonnay. The wine and tasting experience — whether you prefer to sip in the charming countrified rooms or outdoor courtyard — is consistently stellar. Guided tours of the winery and grounds are also available.

Honig Vineyard & Winery, Rutherford

A leader in sustainability, Honig does a wonderful job of making eco-friendly winemaking palatable to a broad audience — and we mean that quite literally. This family-owned Rutherford winery employs a host of environmentally responsible practices, from managing water use to solar power to employing wooly weeders (sheep as natural lawn mowers). Tour the sustainably farmed vineyard to see how things are done before sitting down for a biodynamic flight on the shaded garden patio.

The Perfect Napa Valley Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

One hour north of San Francisco, all of life’s greatest indulgences—wine, food, relaxation, and adventure—can be experienced all at once in Napa Valley , one of the top Wine Country destinations in the world.

Thirty miles long and five miles wide, this small slice of heaven is home to more than 500 wineries throughout a collection of six quaint towns: Napa, Yountville, Oakville, Rutherford, St. Helena, and Calistoga. Each has its own personality and places to discover; from Napa’s urban wine trail to Yountville’s renowned dining scene to Calistoga’s detoxifying hot springs , there’s something for every kind of traveler, whether you’re a oenophile, foodie, adventurist, or self-care aficionado.

There’s also no bad time to visit Napa Valley . While September and October are the busiest and warmest months, offering the chance to experience the annual grape harvest in action, the winter months have their own appeal. It’s quiet, uncrowded, and not too chilly, with temperatures mostly in the 50s and 60s. Plus, many hotels offer hard-to-beat off-season rates. Your best chance of rain is in the spring, but the blooming fields of bright, yellow mustard also make it one of the most Instagram-worthy seasons to plan a trip.

Whenever you do decide to pack your bags and pay Napa Valley a visit, we’ve put together the perfect itinerary for the first time visitor, covering all of the “must do’s” over a long weekend trip.

Visit a Historic Winery

Louis M. Martini Winery

Reserve a hotel room in Napa so that you can be within walking distance (or just a short drive) to downtown’s many restaurants, bars, and tasting rooms. The urban chic Andaz Napa is at the heart of downtown Napa activity, where loft-style rooms are both stylish and inviting, while Milliken Creek ’s peaceful riverfront location offers guests a quieter escape just a few minutes from the downtown scene.

Milliken Creek Inn in Napa, CA

For breakfast , head to chef Thomas Keller’s famous Bouchon Bakery in Yountville for pastries and espresso. Most likely there will be a line out the door, but it moves quickly. If you want to double down, you can head to Mini Model across the street. This is a smaller location of the locally-acclaimed Model Bakery . Get the English muffin. It’s so good that Oprah Winfrey actually has them flown straight to her front door. For a more elegant brunch option, head to RH Yountville , where dishes like avocado toast on charred sourdough and black forest bacon are perfectly paired with their signature RH mimosa.

Visit a Boutique Winery

Cliff Lede

Because you visited some of the oldest, largest, and most popular wineries on Day 1, make an appointment at a boutique or family-owned winery next and compare experiences. A boutique winery can mean several things: a more personalized experience (sometimes with the winemaker or owner), less of a crowd, and super primo wines (especially Cabernet Sauvignon, which Napa Valley is best known for). Some of our favorite family-owned and/or boutique wineries to visit UpValley are Goosecross Cellars , Jessup Cellars , and Cliff Lede Vineyards in Yountville, Clif Family Winery and Trinchero in St. Helena, and Groth Vineyards and Winery in Oakville or Staglin Family Vineyard in Rutherford.

Also in Rutherford is the family-owned Sequoia Grove Winery , where a variety of tasting experiences await. Check out the impressive Taste of Cabernet , where a multi-course menu crafte d by Executive Chef Spencer Conaty highlights the marriage between food and wine, o r the more approachable (and less filling) Wine + Bites experience to tide you over until lunch.

Lunch in St. Helena

Clif Family Winery

For the better part of the afternoon, drive the eight miles from St. Helena to Calistoga for some spa time. This quirky, little town is best known for its healing mineral waters from natural hot springs, plus mud baths that’ll make your skin as smooth as a newborn. Make an appointment for a spa treatment ahead of time; there are so many local spas to choose from, from luxe resorts like Indian Springs and Solage to hip boutique gems like Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs to more intimate and classically restorative escapes at Golden Haven Hot Springs .

If you have some time after, take a stroll down Calistoga’s main drag Lincoln Avenue and pop into CAMi Art + Wine for a tasting while admiring the contemporary art, or grab a pint at the Calistoga Inn Restaurant & Brewery .

Mapping out an ideal 2 to 3 days in Napa and Sonoma itinerary can be a joyful, if not overwhelming, task. There is so much to see and do in this iconic wine region of Northern California and you don’t want to miss anything – even if you’re short on time.

Both Napa and Sonoma County have more to offer than just wineries, as well, and is known for its fantastic restaurants, charming towns like Calistoga and Healdsburg and lovely hiking opportunities. Easily reached from San Francisco, it’s also the perfect getaway from the Bay Area.

So if you’re planning a trip to California Wine Country, use this itinerary to plan a few days exploring this wonderful area.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Napa & Sonoma?

So how many days should you spend in Sonoma and Napa in order to do the region justice? It can be tough to put your finger on it when you consider all there is to do in the area.

In general, if you want to see the highlights of both Napa Valley and dig a little bit deeper, then plan to spend at least 2 days in the area. With 2 days, this will give you ample time to visit some wineries and also explore the towns.

If time grants you a third day, venture out further to where wineries have been built on top of the hills, some straddling the line between Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley. The further you get from downtown, the more beautiful views you’ll get to enjoy while sipping the region’s most delicious wine.

Beautiful Napa

Getting To and Around Napa & Sonoma

You’ll absolutely want a car when you visit Sonoma and Napa, especially if you’re visiting for several days. Most wineries are spread out throughout the valleys. As we mentioned before, plan your days around certain regions of each valley.

This decreases your driving time between each destination and allows you to spend more time enjoying the wineries. If you need to rent a car for your trip, you can browse Rentalcars.com which shows deals across a number of major car hire companies.

You can also choose to hire a driver for the day. Most hotels in the downtown areas have connections to a driver service. You pay by the hour and are transported in your own car, which can be very convenient.

If you prefer to prebook, one option is this private wine tour for up to 6 people or this group tour if you prefer to join with other people. If you want to spend your day in style, you can even hire a private limo tour!

By hiring a driver, you remove any risk of driving while intoxicated and can rest assured you’ll be safely transported between stops during your day of wine tasting.

Napa Valley Welcome Sign

2 to 3 Days in Napa & Sonoma Itinerary

Kick off your time here by spending day one exploring Napa Valley. If you have 2 days in Napa, use the second day to explore wineries seated deep in the valley and enjoy their breathtaking views. Finally, use day three to check out Sonoma Valley and downtown Sonoma.

Day 1 – Visit Napa Valley

Explore downtown napa.

For your first day, spend the morning exploring downtown Napa. Enjoy breakfast by the waterfront, stop by Oxbow Market, and check out the many shops and tasting rooms this downtown area has to offer.

Several companies offer food and wine tours of downtown Napa. You can also opt for an historic kayak tour along the Napa River. Oenotri, Morimoto, and Allegria are three excellent food options to choose from, however there are countless opportunities for tasty meals in Napa.

Keep in mind that downtown Napa will have more tourists than Sonoma, which is worth noting when trying to determine if you want to spend more time in Napa or Sonoma .

It’s larger and offers more commercial wineries and lodging, therefore, usually sees more tourists each year. However, if you have a morning, afternoon, or evening to spend in the area, you won’t regret it.

Mumm Winery

Throughout Napa Valley, you’ll find an assortment of wineries with a range of specialties. Mumm is located near Rutherford and is renowned for their sparkling wines and an excellent first stop while tasting in Napa Valley.

With roots in GH Mumm, the leading Champagne brand in France, Mumm Napa has mastered the art of sparkling wine. They use traditional French techniques in their winemaking and have been doing so in Napa since the 1970s.

The tasting patio at Mumm overlooks vines backdropped by lush green hills. It’s quiet, quaint, and a peaceful destination to begin your wine tasting in Napa Valley. Make sure to book your reservation in advance.

Upon arrival, you’ll select which flight of wines to taste. At Mumm, you’ll sample the winery’s flagship wines as well as some of Napa Valley’s best sparkling wine.

Pride Mountain Vineyards

If you can survive the drive to Pride, there’s a t-shirt saying such ready for purchase upon arrival. Pride Mountain Vineyards in Helena is known for its robust red wines.

A visit here includes a brief estate tour, wine cellar tour, patio tasting, and barrel tasting. The tour guide might even test your taste buds by offering a taste from a barrel and a bottle of the same wine. Can you taste a difference?

Pride Mountain is famous for its stunning views. The curvy road to the vineyard rewards guests with outlooks over the valleys.

When visiting Pride, you might notice a brick line through the parking lot dividing the vineyard in half. This line marks where half of the winery is in Napa and half in Sonoma. Pride has several tasting options when making your reservation, so you can choose the one that works best for you.

Napa Vineyards

Domaine Carneros

As one of the most popular wineries in the Valley and a must-visit when planning a Napa itinerary, Domaine Carneros is the perfect final stop on your day of wine tasting.

The winery is known for its Pinot Noir and sparkling wines. We recommend Domaine Carneros as the final stop for the evening sunset view that comes with an end-of-day tasting here.

The estate is beautiful and stands out against the hillside. The patio at its front is where most wine tastings happen. This patio overlooks hills and valleys that are glowing in hues of pinks, yellows, and oranges during the evening hours.

During your tasting, you’ll choose from three flights of Napa Valley wines. A flight of reds, flight of sparkling wines, and a mixed flight composed of the winery’s best of both categories. Domaine Carneros is located in the Carneros region of Napa Valley and was established in 1987.

Since it was created, the winery has been using the same traditional winemaking methods that the founding Taittinger family. It’s the perfect place to wrap up your first day of three.

Day 2 – Calistoga & More Vineyard Tours

Explore calistoga.

Located on the northern tip of Napa Valley is Calistoga.

If you’ve heard of Calistoga before it was probably in conjunction with mud baths. The area around the town is volcanic. Many spas have transformed this natural feature into volcanically-heated mineral springs and mud baths. Downtown Calistoga is filled with shops, restaurants, and bars.

There are several spas with a variety of relaxing packages for you to enjoy. Try sitting in a mud bath followed by a massage and mineral pool soak. You can also opt to stick with just a classic massage, manicure, or pedicure. If you want to spend a night in Calistoga, that option is also available to you.

From Calistoga, you can also hop on a hot air balloon for an unmatched view over wine country. You can visit a geyser, explore Calistoga’s Petrified Forest, go for a hike on Palisade Trail, as well as visit the nearby Castello di Amorosa.

View from Castello di Amorosa

Visit St. Francis Winery & Vineyards

As one of the few certified sustainable wineries in Napa and Sonoma, St. Francis Winery is one to add to your Napa Valley itinerary. Not only is the wine delicious, but the estate is also stunning and the views from the back tasting patio are unbeatable.

While sipping from your flight of wine, you’ll look out over rows of vines toward rolling hills. St. Francis also accommodates dinner parties, large groups, and other kinds of visits aside from a classic tasting.

Visitors can also opt to take a pedal wine trolley through the vineyards to sample the winery’s most renowned wines and see the vineyard.

Chateau Montelena

Chateau Montelena’s estate will rival some of the most famous French vineyards. A visit to this winery is in such high demand that their tastings are fully booked out months in advance.

The winery prides itself on crafting wine from traditional methods, without the assistance of modern technology. Wines from this estate have consistently ranked among the best wines of the year by countless publications. Everything from Departures to Forbes has highlighted a wine produced by Chateau Montelena.

Your experience wine tasting at the chateau and can be as personalized as you like. Reserve a private, customized tasting with a wine specifically curated to your preferences.

Stick with a classic tasting of Chateau Montelena’s premium wines or opt for an estate tour. Regardless of the route you take, a visit to this winery ensures a memorable time.

Day 3 – Explore Sonoma

Hike sonoma overlook trail.

To break up your time in wine tasting rooms, try getting outdoors with a short nature hike in Sonoma Valley. The Sonoma Overlook Trail is an easy and pleasant 3-mile hike that offers great views of the valley at the end.

The trailhead is just a few blocks north of Sonoma plaza, making it an easy stop during your two to three days in Sonoma and Napa.

Along the hike, visitors are treated with colorful wildflowers and local wildlife. Guests should also keep in mind that dogs, bikes, and horses are not permitted on the trails. The lower portion of the trail is usually closed during the winter.

Those who have completed the hike remark that it’s well maintained, but it can get muddy and slippery during wet or cold weather. A hike earlier in the day lends to a quieter and more peaceful walk. The trail sees more traffic later in the day.

Sonoma Valley

Taste at Landmark Vineyards

If you’re a lover of pinot noir and chardonnay, and if you want some of the best wine in Sonoma Valley, pay a visit to Landmark Vineyards. Landmark Vineyards was founded in 1974 by the great-great-granddaughter of John Deere.

Here, grapes are aged in French oak barrels and use naturally occurring yeast to ferment the fruit. Visitors can taste in one of two places when sampling Landmark wines.

The Kenwood Estate Tasting Room and the Hop Kiln Estate Tasting Room both offer opportunities to taste the winery’s most delicious wines.

Visit Buena Vista Winery

Buena Vista Winery is the oldest commercial winery in California wine country. Located on the southern tip of Sonoma Valley, Buena Vista was founded in 1857 and is now a California Historic Landmark.

The founder, known as the “Count of Buena Vista” bolstered an unwavering love of wine. He had a vibrant and eccentric career filled with adventures in the American West and political exile.

The Count’s sentiment toward creating excellent wine has been carried on through the years. Buena Vista produces everything from pinot noirs to zinfandels to champagne. Visitors can choose a classic tasting on the outdoor patio or indoor tasting room.

They can also opt for a tour of the winery’s barrel room. Buena Vista Winery comes highly recommended as a destination on your Napa and Sonoma itinerary.

Take a Bike Tour

Try mixing up how you experience Sonoma by taking a bike tour. Explore historic downtown Sonoma or nearby vineyards. Starting from Sonoma, you’ll have easy access to paved bike paths that lead you throughout the area.

You can choose to take a full-day or half-day tour. Each tour is hosted by a knowledgeable guide who provides Sonoma wine and cultural history.

Bike tours lead you through the quieter roads of Sonoma Valley to visit wineries by an off-the-beaten path route. Some options include this 16-mile bike tour that visits up to 3 wineries or this leisurely small group tour.

Many bike tours change their path each day, so if you enjoy yourself one day, feel free to hop on a bike and cruise through a different part of Sonoma the next. Bike tours offer a unique and personalized visit to Sonoma Valley. You can prebook a bike rental here where they will also give you tips on routes.

DFS Dish: Avoiding top tier at Procore Championship could be recipe for success in wine country

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

The North Course at Silverado Resort & Spa plays host as it has since 2014. Now at 7,123 yards, it’s the first Bentgrass/Poa annua greens and surrounds combo since the 3M Open in late July.

Sahith Theegala matched the tournament scoring record at Silverado Resort, by posting 21-under last September and picked up his first TOUR victory by defeating S.H. Kim by two shots. He leads the betting markets with fellow Presidents Cup teammates Wyndham Clark and Max Homa also prominent.

But will they be fully invested in Napa or have half a mind elsewhere in Canada? There are plenty of reasons (see below) to still consider the chalk at the top but if the wandering mind concerns you, the options abound in the mid and low tiers.

DraftKings – Top of the board

Sahith Theegala ($10,600): Any concerns over a wrist injury were easily wiped away after he finished third at the TOUR Championship. Defending for the first time is rarely easy, but after turning East Lake into pudding with 29 birdies, the Californian native should be full of confidence on a course where he cashed T6 and T14 and picked up his only win on TOUR.

Wyndham Clark ($10,400): The Denver man tunes up this week for the Presidents Cup chasing T14 or better for the eighth time in his last nine starts on TOUR. Silverado’s North Course has not been a happy hunting ground previously with T30 being his best result from five visits. Without the pressure of a hometown crowd or chasing down Scottie Scheffler, I would expect a big week.

Overvalued or undervalued

Max Homa ($10,000) floats easily to the top of this list. The two-time winner tried to make it three in a row in September 2023 but shared seventh, his fourth top-10 since 2016 in California wine country. His last top-10 and top-20 payday on TOUR was in early May at the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow. Named a captain’s pick to the Presidents Cup team, he should be on plenty of rosters this week on a course he loves. The third choice this week on the board at DraftKings, investors will pay to break him out of his current slump.

Needing a big finish to the 2024 regular season, Matt Kuchar ($7,900) played in the final group at the 3M Open in late July and shared third. The following week in the last regular season event, the Wyndham Championship, he sat in a share of third heading into the final round. Unable to close the deal, he’s playing excellent golf and returns to a course where he’s finished T7 and T12 in his last two visits.

Makers or breakers

Corey Conners ($9,800) should be on this list every week where the fairways are tight, only 20 yards wide on average this week, and greens aren’t overwhelmingly large (5,400 square feet). Freshly assigned to the Presidents Cup team, repaying his captain’s faith starts with a big week this week on a course that fits his skill set.

Maverick McNealy ($9,400) pushed Homa to the limit in September 2021, before ultimately falling a shot short of a playoff. Looking to continue the streak of winners from the state of California to three champions in a row and five of the last seven, the Stanford man who grew up playing Pebble Beach will be on a familiar footing in Napa Valley. The last time Bent/Poa greens featured on TOUR (3M Open), he finished T3.

Brendon Todd ($9,100) presents a big roster number, but an accurate driver on a short, tight layout fits his profile. Playing the weekend in his last five events, T12 is the best payday twice, but he was T6 in 2023 and T9 in 2022 and has posted T26 or better in four of five starts.

J.J. Spaun ($9,000) picked up three top-10 paydays in his last six starts, including T3 at Wyndham and T9 at the 3M Open in two final events of the regular season. Finishing at No. 98 on the points list, he did not qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs, but his results paint a different picture heading into the FedExCup Fall.

Only missing the cut four times from 22 events in 2024, Canadian Mackenzie Hughes ($8,100) played his way onto the radar of Mike Weir and received a captain’s pick for Royal Montreal. Picking up top-10 paychecks on three difficult layouts, the two-time winner on TOUR has no problem grinding on and around the greens and has cashed four times from six visits to Wine Country.

Justin Lower ($7,400) was the 54-hole leader in 2022 but could not hold off Homa and previous Masters champion Danny Willett before sharing fourth place. Making the weekend in his last five starts on TOUR, he’s not entering this week searching to find form.

Charley Hoffman ($7,400) will try to match Stewart Cink as the oldest winner at Silverado. The 47-year-old Southern California native used his one-time lifetime earnings exemption to easily slot inside the top 125 at No. 80. The runner-up at the WM Phoenix Open last February posted T8 at the Barracuda Championship in late July and T12 at Wyndham in early August.

Patton Kizzire ($6,900) shared eighth at the Barracuda Championship last July and continued his three-month run of all-or-nothing results. The runner-up on debut here in 2016 blows just as hot and cool in Napa Valley.

Here’s a look at how I would devise a six-team roster this week while staying below the $50,000 salary cap offered for DraftKings contests.

  • Maverick McNealy ($9,400)
  • Brendon Todd ($9,100)
  • J.J. Spaun ($9,000)
  • Matt Kuchar ($7,900)
  • Charley Hoffman ($7,400)
  • Patton Kizzire ($6,900)
