Kuala Sepetang: What To See And Do When You Are Here
Kuala Sepetang is a sleepy coastal town close to Taiping . It takes around an hour to drive to Kuala Sepetang from the capital city of Perak, Ipoh .
This quaint town is worth visiting for its nature, food, and history! There’s a Chinese fishing village (Kuala Sangga) as well as mangrove which are home to fireflies and other wildlife!
History buffs will want to see Port Weld too. This is where you can see the evidence of the very first railway in Peninsula Malaysia.
Table of contents:
Attractions
- Hotel & Homestay
- Ipoh To Kuala Sepetang
You will find you need at least 1 full day to adequately cover Kuala Sepetang. Because there is so much to see from morning until night!
1. Charcoal Factory
Ever seen a traditional charcoal factory before?
This charcoal factory Kuala Sepetang by Khay Hor Holdings Sdn Bhd has been passed down from generations within the family.
The current owner, Mr Chuah does multilingual tours under an hour around his factory. Where he enthusiastically shows visitors what it takes to make charcoal the old-fashioned way .
See the big kilns up close and how they transport the raw material (i.e. mangrove wood) to the factory!
You will also learn what products can be made from charcoal. Or even buy some if you wish!
Note: It’s quite hot in the factory because of the kilns. Bring some drinking water with you~
- Opening hours: Daily from 10am to 5pm
- Entrance fee: Free but tours cost RM5 per person
- Contact: +6012-428 6098
2. Old “Port Weld” Railway Station Signboard (十八丁铁路碑)
While not much remains of the once bustling scene at Port Weld, you can still see bits and pieces around.
One of these testaments is an old multilingual signboard for the railway station that was in operation almost 2 centuries ago !
If you’re exploring Port Weld, you can spot this signboard close to the local morning market. It’s close to the next item on this list too.
Did you know? This was the very first railway station in West Malaysia!
- Location: Google Maps
3. Port Weld Scenic Bridge
Port Weld bridge connects the mainland and Kampung Seberang and overlooks the fishing village below on both sides.
Close by is where you can board a boat tour around the island or head out and see the sea eagles! You can rent a boat from RM28 and above, depending on where you want to go.
The bridge is covered which makes it ideal for fishing or observing boats coming in. There is an awesome sunset view here too!
Locals frequently ride their motorcycles up and down the steep bridge so be careful when crossing this bridge.
4. Walk To Shang Di Temple
From Port Weld Scenic Bridge, you can spot what looks like a Chinese style pavilion. Walking in that direction will bring you to the Shang Di Temple.
And you will see that the roof belongs to a tall Guan Yin statue in front of the temple.
A large turtle sits atop the stairs of the temple. And there are Chinese murals around the base of and behind the temple too.
Inside, the praying chamber is dimly lit, and it is filled with incense and praying sticks.
Note: If you’re looking for toilets, they are to the side of the temple building. Not far from a small turtle enclosure.
5. Fireflies
Fireflies are not as prevalent as they once were. This is because they only favor a certain type of mangrove species called beremban trees .
Such trees grow in abundance at the mangrove reserve thankfully. And boat tours will take people out to see fireflies once the sky darkens.
You can go to any of the places below to book a tour to see fireflies:
- Kuala Sepetang Eco Tourism
- Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve
- Kampung Dew Fireflies
This is the main highlight of many Kuala Sepetang tours available.
There’s another place called Kuala Selangor where you can see fireflies in an evening boat tour through the mangroves and it’s closer to Kuala Lumpur.
6. Pink River Dophin s
There aren’t any boat tours that promise passengers a sighting of the rare mammals.
But if luck is with you, you might just spot a dolphin from the Indo-Pacific humpback species on the boat ride to Kuala Sangga fishing village .
All-inclusive tours like the ones offered by Kuala Sepetang Eco Tourism are popular as they also combine eagle watching (next item list).
Do note that they don’t go searching for dolphins every day. There are only certain days of the month (6-8 trips per month) that they make longer trips to find dolphins.
The boat tour starts from 9:30am until 12:30pm as it takes 40 minutes out from the jetty and to the open sea. And another 1 to 2 hours to look for the elusive aquatic mammals.
There is a guide on board the boat and he will share information about the river dolphins during the ride.
Each boat takes up to 10 pax at RM70 per head. But if you really want to, you can charter a boat for RM700 total if your group is less than 10 pax.
7. Eagle Watching
It’s truly a magnificent sight to see dozens of eagles flocking around the boats during an eagle watching tour.
The eagles come for the raw chicken fat thrown out from the boats by the guides to draw the birds closer for passengers to see. They’re so used to the boats that the sounding of the horn already attracts them to come!
Note: From a sustainable point of view, we’re not sure if this practice has detrimental effects on the environment. It could potentially discourage eagles from eating their natural prey and thus, cause an imbalance of the local eco system. But then again, the locals do depend on these tours for their livelihood.
If you’re interested, you can book a tour with either of these tour operators:
- Kuala Sepetang Port Weld View Tour Boat Ride
Note: The typical cost for just the eagle watching is around RM200 per boat or RM40 per Malaysian while the package tours may cost RM500+ for private mangrove and firefly tours that include a visit to a fish farm and eagle sighting.
8. Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve Eco Park
Further up the road from the charcoal factory, is Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve.
The highlight here is a boardwalk that allows you to walk among the mangroves. While you observe swamp life (birds and little marine creatures) without getting your shoes in the muck!
After closing in 2019, the walkway has been expanded and reopened in Jan 2023. Do take care when crossing after rain as it can be slippery.
This is not a return track since the starting point and the ending point are not connected. Do allocate an hour to explore the mangrove.
From the reserve, you can take boat rides ( RM30-40/ head ) for the eagle feeding tours passing through a Chinese fishing village .
Note: Beware that the road to the reserve can be flooded after a heavy downpour.
- Opening hours: Daily from 8am to 7pm (closes at 6pm on Sundays)
- Entrance fee: RM15 per person, parking costs RM2
- Contact: +6012-514 5023

You can take a boat ride for 30 minutes to reach the century-old village from Kuala Sepetang port.
The villagers here live off grid . Without depending on electricity or with access to running water! And it won’t take you long to explore the charming village on wooden stilts !
- Visiting Hours: 9am to 5pm
10. Wonder Mushroom Farm
Wonder Mushroom Farm is another family business on this list. And they have been cultivating mushrooms from wood powder for more than 30 years !
Among the mushrooms grown here, there are:
- White and grey oyster mushrooms
- Reishi ( Lingzhi) mushrooms
- Tiger Milk (Susu harimau) mushrooms
It costs RM3 per person to enter , and the guided half-hour tour is very informative. Do drop by if you have a couple of hours to spare!
Besides buying mushrooms, you can try a hand at growing your own mushrooms by taking some of their DIY kits back!
It is best to call ahead before going though as the tours are not their main source of income.
Read more about Taiping Wonder Farm Mushroom .
- Opening hours: Daily from 9am to 12pm, and again from 2pm to 4:30pm (Closed on Mondays)
- Contact: +6016-438 8161
11. Dragon Joss Stick Workshop (Hun Leng Heong Hang)
Beyond the simple appearance of the ordinary joss stick or incense stick are more intricate versions that require a skill that is not common nowadays.
Particularly so for handmade dragon inspired joss sticks . The process of making these can take anywhere from 3 to 10 months , depending on the size!
You can see this impressive traditional art form at Hun Leng Heong Hang workshop. They are especially busy with orders as Chinese New Year approaches.

How to Get to Kuala Sepetang
Kuala Sepetang is about 15km west of Taiping and an easy half or full-day trip. The best way to come here is to drive from Taiping, but there’s also a bus, number 77, that shuttles between the Taiping bus station in the Old Town and Kuala Sepetang.
Where to Stay in Kuala Sepetang
Kuala Sepetang has a few good accommodation options, but after the sun goes down, also has very less things to do. If you have wheels, you could consider visiting during the day and then stay in nearby Taiping, which has more choice of accommodation and a slightly more vibrant nightlife — but remember, Penang nightlife is impossible to find here.
Best Kuala Sepetang Hotels
- The best option to stay in Kuala Sepetang is certainly the Happy 8 Boutique Hotel. This is a modern hotel with cozy and upmarket rooms that are tucked right over the river, with balconies made with old fishermen’s nets and boat parts that add a lot of charm to the most luxurious place to stay in Kuala Sepetang. Still, prices are definitely on the affordable side. Check and book on Agoda .
- KS Homestay is a very good option right inside the Chinese village. The place is clean with smart rooms decorated with little murals that the kids will love. There’s also a balcony from where you can observe the local boats float lazily above the Sepetang River, and it’s in 15 minutes walk from the Charcoal Factory and the Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve. A perfect place for an overnight on a budget. Check prices and book here.
- CK Homestay Kuala Sepetang has rooms housed inside a modern and tall building. It’s all clean and handy, but a bit less personalized than KS Homestay, for a slightly higher price and less nice views. Check prices and book here.
Otherwise, if you have a car you can stay in Taiping, where there are a larger choice of Taiping hotels and of course more food and entertainment choices.
Some recommended hotels and homestays in Taiping are:
- Novotel . You can’t go wrong with this popular brand, central and practical. Book on Agoda or Booking.com
- The Cozytainer has swanky beds in shipping containers, the first of its kind in Taiping. Book on Agoda or Booking.com
- Sojourn Beds & Cafe is Taiping’s first hostel, straight in the old town. Book on Agoda or Booking.com
- Louis Hotel is central and surprisingly cheap for the swanky and comfy rooms it offers. Book on Agoda or Booking.com
Kuala Sepetang Best Attractions and Things to Do
So you followed our suggestions and arrived in Kuala Sepetang, found yourself a cozy accommodation, and now want to know what to do in town, correct? Here are what we think are Kuala Sepetang’s best attractions.
1 Visit the Matang Mangrove Reserve
Kuala Sepetang is famous for its mangrove coastal system that stretches all the way north until the charming fishing village of Kuala Kurau . The best way to see this incredible ecosystem on foot and without getting your feet in the mud is at the Matang Mangrove Reserve, a boardwalk that goes through thick mangroves, giving you a chance to observe these trees and their roots up close. You’ll certainly also have chances to see the local birds and other creatures like the mudskippers, a common inhabitant of these mangroves.
Opening Hours : 8 am to 7 pm Daily Entrance Fee : RM15 per person Contact Number : +6012–514 5023
2 Visit Kuala Sepetang Charcoal Factories
Kuala Sepetang is one of Malaysia’s biggest charcoal-producing areas. The mangroves provide perfect wood to be cut and made into charcoal, and roughly 1000 hectares of local mangroves are cut every year to produce it. The same amount is replanted in a cycle that takes 30 years to grow back — it’s all managed by Malaysia’s Forestry Department to keep it sustainable.
Just outside of town you should stop at the Khay Hor Holdings charcoal factory that has been passed down by generations and today belongs to Mr Chuah. Visitors can enter the factory on free tours that take them in front of the giant brick kilns where the different processes of charcoal-making, from drying to burning, are exemplified. You’ll see rows of chopped mangrove woods waiting to be thrown into the kilns. If you come at the right time, you may be lucky and see the workers hauling more logs into the factory.
Opening Hours : 9 am to 5 pm Daily Entrance Fee : Entry is free, but it’s RM5 per person for a tour Contact Number : +6012–428 6098
3 Stand above Kuala Sepetang’s Port Weld bridge
Once you arrive in Kuala Sepetang from Taiping, you won’t realize how close you are to the water until you walk up this famous bridge that crosses Sungai Reba, a smaller tributary of Sungai Sepetang. This is possibly Kuala Sepetang’s most scenic spot, a perfect vantage point from where you can observe how the local homes nestle near the water, where dozens of blue, red, and yellow fishing boats are moored like floating cars — and well, they most often are a local family’s only means of transport.
Port Weld bridge is now covered by a roof of corrugated iron, so it’s OK to come here at any time of the day, but you’ll get the best views at sunrise and sunset. Wait for a fishing boat to drive below you, and snap that special picture.
4 Visit Kuala Sepetang’s charming Chinese village, Kampung Seberang
The Port Weld bridge takes you down into Kampung Seberang or the Chinese part of Kuala Sepetang. It’s a very scenic maze of small alleys that can be only navigated on foot or by motorbike. Old homes, most of which are still entirely made of wood, sit next to each other on the waterfront, alternated by the occasional Chinese shrine. Some houses are on stilts, and some of those have been converted into charming homestays.
The beauty here is to roam around, observe the local Chinese elders rest on their porches and go about their simple daily lives, and sit around for a coffee or a bowl of noodles at one of the many homes turned into coffee shops. At a minimum, you’ll spend a happy hour strolling around these back lanes, but it could be much longer, especially if you can speak Chinese and communicate with the locals who are always curious about those who take the time to talk to them.
5 Visit the old Port Weld Railway (十八丁铁路碑)
Kuala Sepetang was once the important Port Weld during British Colonial Times and was the end of the line of the Taiping-Port Weld railway line opened in 1885, the first in Malaya. Today, the old railway station sign, written in English, Malay, Tamil, and Chinese, is still standing right in the center of town. You can still see parts of the railway track, too. There’s nothing much else left, but it’s one important historical memory to check out while in Kuala Sepetang.
Closer to Kuala Sepetang’s main jetty is the wooden Koperasi Nelayan Kuala Sepetang, which was the former Port Weld train station warehouse from 1885, and you can still visit today.
6 Explore Malay village life at Kampung Menteri
As the Chinese have their area after the Port Weld bridge, the Malays set up their kampung slightly out of the main town, in the area called Kampung Menteri. Developed right next to a bend of the estuary, where egrets and other birds come fishing near the mangroves, Kampung Menteri is lined with Malay homes and is the main point for prawn fishing and collecting. You can come here to observe the fishermen at work with their catch of the day — you may buy fresh prawns from them at very competitive prices, too.
7 Take a Boat Ride
The main activity at Kuala Sepetang is to take one of the various boat tours on offer. Most go out on the Sepetang River for a standard tour that takes in the main sites that Kuala Sepetang boasts on the water.
Each boat carries a minimum of six people and costs RM28 each for the signature two-hour tour that includes visits to a floating fish farm, watch the eagle feeding, and a drive up and down the coastal mangrove area. But if you have your own group, you can also talk to the boatmen and customize your experience.
If you have never come to Kuala Sepetang before, one of these boat tours is very much worth as it really gives you a chance to understand the water dimension of this place and get a feeling for the mangroves that surround the area.
8 Visit Pulau Sangga, a remote island without running water
One of the most remote and interesting destinations you can visit on a boat tour is Kuala Sangga, the main settlement on Pulau Sangga. This remote estuary island is one of two remaining islands in Malaysia that still have no electricity and running water. The village is scenic, solar-powered, and if you go to the one and only Kopitiam here, you’ll be served drinks made out of rainwater.
This island is very special because it was born as a Chinese Catholic settlement, and there’s still a church dedicated to Saint Anne. Since then, all the Catholics have gone, and St. Anne is now worshiped as if she were a Chinese goddess, and she’s said to have protected the island from many calamities, among which was the disastrous 2004 Tsunami. Certainly an interesting anthropological find.
Usually, people visit Kuala Sangga as part of a longer boat trip from Kuala Sepetang, but at the time of research, a new eco-tourism project was starting to offer homestays on this island — a special experience, for sure.
9 Visit the Muzium Matang at Kota Ngah Ibrahim
If you come to Kuala Sepetang by car from Taiping, don’t miss a chance to stop and visit this museum built by Ngah Ibrahim, who carried the title Orang Kaya Menteri Paduka Tuan. The exhibitions are heavy on the history of Taiping town and Kuala Sepetang, with an emphasis on politics before the British colonization of Malaya. Entrance is free, so you are encouraged to visit and get your basics right before you keep exploring the area.
Opening Hours: Daily 9 am — 5 pm, closed on national holidays
10 See the Fireflies
Kuala Sepetang is one of the few places on the West coast of Malaysia where you can spot fireflies. To be honest, the number has dwindled considerably because of the degradation of the mangrove environment, and you won’t see the yellow clumps of lights as it used to be earlier. Still, coming to Kuala Sepetang and not stay for sunset and a firefly cruise is a big mistake.
Try to get a boat tour that leaves around 6.30 pm, visit a fish farm and see the mangroves for about an hour, and then go for a firefly hunt from 7.30 pm when it gets dark. It’s an experience you won’t regret and a good reason to stay in Kuala Sepetang overnight.
11 Eagle Watching and Feeding
Every boat tour in Kuala Sepetang includes a bit of this past-time called “eagle feeding”: a boon for wildlife photographers, it essentially entails boatmen who feed local eagles with chicken skin they throw on the water surface to attract the birds. This is not what we call a sustainable tourism activity, but it happens, and it’s popular so we must acknowledge it. Eagles are obviously not hurt in the process, but end up developing a cannibalistic appetite for chicken meat that makes them dependent upon unscrupulous boatmen. You’ll certainly get great shots, but be very aware of the implications of what you are doing.
12 Take a Tour of Wonder Farm Mushroom
This organic mushroom farm near Kuala Sepetang has been producing different types of fungi for the past 30 years and is a good place to learn about mushroom cultivation. Tours are extensive and interesting, and kids will especially enjoy learning about organic mushroom farming. Call ahead of time if possible (+60 16 531 8161) and organize your visit.
Opening Hours: Daily 9 am — 4.30 pm
13 Take a Dolphin spotting tour
The waters off Kuala Sepetang are a very good place to see Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins. The best time to see them is at sunrise, so don’t believe those tour operators who tell you otherwise. The best way to see the dolphins is to stay at one of the accommodation options we recommended above for the night, and take a tour in the early morning. Experienced local guide Khairul of Kuala Sepetang Ecotourism is recommended. His tour costs RM450 for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 10 people (RM150 per person, inclusive of the boat)
Where to Eat Kuala Sepetang’s Best Food and Seafood
Once in Kuala Sepetang, you can’t dismiss the food, in particular the fresh seafood that’s caught daily from the estuary. Prawns are particularly plentiful, and tasty, around these parts.
14 Have some of Kuala Sepetang fresh seafood
Kuala Sepetang has a few established seafood restaurants that line the shore right next to the main tourist jetty.
- Kuala Sepetang Fish Village Restaurant has been around long enough and is quite popular with locals and tourists. Call +6012–500 5325 for bookings.
- Restoran Di Tepi Sungai (+6010–549 6433) is another established place with a terrace offering beautiful views of the estuary. You can have fresh crabs, baby octopus, and delicious curry prawns here.
- Kang Kao Riverside Restaurant is yet another popular place set inside the Happy 8 building (look for the tall construction with an eagle’s head popping out of it). A specialty here is the curry prawns cooked inside a bread loaf — quite a unique concoction to try.
Try the famous Mee Udang Kuala Sepetang
Kuala Sepetang is famous all over Perak for its juicy and scrumptious Mee Udang — noodles served with giant river prawns. It’s a local staple and something you really shouldn’t miss once in town. These are the best places to try this dish.
15 Restoran Mee Udang Mak Jah
This may be by far the most famous Mee Udang place in Kuala Sepetang. The dish is served both in soup or fried mee version — the latter preferred by many customers. The prawns are scrumptious and as big as fingers, so don’t miss this place.
Opening Hours : 12 pm to 10 pm (Closed on Wednesdays) Phone Number : +605–858 1400
16 Salleh Stall Mee Udang
This place, a cluster of tables set under a metallic roof strewn with fluorescent lights, has been dishing up the heavenly mee udang since 1956 and, some say, it’s even better than Mak Jah. Go and try for yourself.
Opening Hours : 7 am to 7 pm (Closed on Fridays) Phone Number : +6012–571 9372
17 Kuala Sepetang Curry Mee
Prawns are also an important ingredient to make great curry mee, and you can certainly find some worthwhile bowls in Kuala Sepetang. Once in Penang, see our guide on where you can have the best Penang curry mee .
Ah Tai, a popular stall set close to the Port Weld railway sign on the way to Kuala Sepetang’s market, is popular and has scrumptious curry mee, some of the town’s most popular. Don’t miss their special sardine asam laksa — something quite different from the Penang laksa we are used to.
Last time we were in town, however, we tried another curry mee that we really want to recommend. I am referring to the simple stall operated at the entrance of Ah Huat fishery Curry Mee . You can’t miss it as it’s along the same main road that leads to the Port Weld sign.
For just RM4, I was served a huge bowl filled to the brim with richly textured gravy topped with very fresh prawns, short green beans, pieces of fried beancurd, and slices of fishcake. The cook even added more curry to my soup halfway through my meal to let me enjoy the taste more. If you come to eat here, you can walk to the back of the building where the family has its own private jetty and boats, and visit the fishery itself. Please support them as they opened only in August. They are closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

What made our afternoon though was our guide, Bala – he was professional, incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, but also self aware and very kind, going out of his way to make sure that we were comfortable. He helped us to order dinner in a local restaurant and we learned so much from him about Malaysia, it’s culture and it’s history. (Review) 2D1N Itinerary at Kuala Sepetang
Kuala Sepetang is a 💎 hidden gem that's perfect for a low-budget 👨👩👧👦 family outing. Though it may not be as 💏romantic as the city of Venice, Italy, it's still a unique destination where houses are separated by a river that flows underneath them. Recently, we took a trip to Kuala Sepetang and followed this itinerary. Check it out!
Check-in Homestay (12pm - 12:30pm)
We rented our accommodation with CK Homestay. 🏡 This house has 3 floors, and the family of the homestay owner is staying on the 1st floor. If you are worried about interrupting the family, you don't have to. Because there is a specially built 🚪door that leads to the staircase at the side of the house! It is reserved for guests like us to use! The host is a 😄 friendly guy, and he made our stay a comfortable one.
There were 4 of us, so we rented 2 rooms for our stay in Kuala Sepetang and we got rooms on the third floor with a great view of the village! (Insert excited screaming here😆). Keep in mind, there's no lift, so don't overpack! Checking in is a breeze, just contact the host to open the door and you're in. The third floor features a spacious living room with some comfy sofas, a 📺TV and a fridge. And the best part? Each room has its own bathroom, so you don't have to worry about manufacturing 💩 in it.
We rented a room with two single beds that were actually 🛌quite comfy . The owner told us that for a little extra sleeping space, we can add a mattress for just RM10 (damn worth it!). Each room comes equipped with towels and clothes hangers, and the bathroom even has a 2-in-1 shampoo that can be used for both hair and body (wow, talk about versatility!).
This homestay in Kuala Sepetang has all the amenities you need to make your stay comfortable and convenient. On the balcony, you'll find a clothes drying rack, a hot and cold water dispenser, and even a washing machine. There are also chairs and tables where you can sit, eat and hang out.
Matang Mangrove Forest Eco-Education Center (12:30 pm - 1:30 pm)
After checking in, we strolled over to the Matang Mangrove Forest Eco-Education Center (just a 3-minute walk away). Did you know that this forest has been hailed as the best-managed mangrove forest on the planet? And not just because it's pretty to look at, but because it plays a vital role in the mangrove swamp ecosystem, especially for our feathered friends during migration season🐦.
After a few minutes of walking, you'll stumble upon a quaint little gallery that showcases exhibits on mangrove trees and the various types of charcoal produced from them. The exhibits are presented in a fun and easy-to-understand way, with cartoon illustrations and graphics that make it perfect for kids to learn something new. Who knows, maybe this can help them get an "A" in science & geography🤷♀️?.
You can use the walkway to explore the beautiful mangrove forest at Kuala Sepetang. Just a heads up, the endpoint of the walkway isn't connected to the starting point, so if you're feeling a bit lazy, you might not want to make the trek all the way to the end. We were kinda lazy to walk back😩 so we didn't walk till the end.
Mee Udang Mak Jah (1:30pm-3pm)
TADAA!! This is the super famous Kuala Sepetang mee udang (🦐shrimp noodle)! This writer has been 🤤dying to try this viral dish for ages and finally had the chance to eat it! According to one of the employees, the weekend queue for this popular mee udang is usually pretty long (we were lucky leh~). So why is Mee Udang Mak Jah so beloved by locals and tourists alike? Here's the answer… 👇
The price for a bowl of Mee Udang at Kuala Sepetang RM15. With the amount of 🦐shrimps, this is considered pretty reasonable especially for those who hail from KL. And if you're allergic to seafood, don't worry, there are plenty of other options available, like fried rice, mihun , and kway teow.
Charcoal Factory (3pm - 3.30pm)
After satisfying our tummies😋, we headed over to a charcoal factory in Kuala Sepetang. Upon arriving, we were greeted by the manager, who kindly took us on a tour of the factory. He showed us around and patiently explained the various stages of charcoal production, which we learned can be quite complicated. According to the manager, the production process involves closely monitoring and adjusting the 🔥fire to ensure that the wood is not burned too severely. It was a fascinating experience that gave us a new appreciation for the process of making charcoal.
Ever wonder how charcoal is made? At this factory in Kuala Sepetang, the process involves stacking wood in a pyramid shape before burning it in a kiln. The charcoal that we often use for barbecues comes from the wood at the top of the pile. Any excess waste that doesn't become charcoal is converted into fertilizer. Pretty cool, huh?
Did you know that this factory in Kuala Sepetang doesn't just produce charcoal? They also have a variety of charcoal products that visitors can purchase as souvenirs to take home with them. Some examples include charcoal soaps (the white ones are good for treating skin conditions like tinea, while the black ones are great for exfoliating), multi-purpose charcoal steam water , and burned mangrove wood, (which is not suitable for BBQing by the way) that looks great as a decorative piece. So be sure to check out these unique offerings while you're here!
Boat Tour (3:30pm - 6pm)
The guide is fluent in Malay, English, and Mandarin, so no matter what language you speak, you'll be able to join in on the fun. As soon as we set sail, we made our way to the shell beach. And let me tell you, this isn't your typical sandy beach, it's actually made up of 🐚seashells! Trust us, you'll be surprised when you see it for yourself.
So how did this mysterious phenomenon come to be? Allow us to enlighten you. Cockles breeding is one of the main economic activities here in Kuala Sepetang. It turns out, the local shellfish farmers here toss the shells into the river after extracting the cockle flesh The river currents then carry the shells to this beach, where they pile up over time. And boom! You've got yourself a Shell Beach! Isn't Mother Nature just full of surprises?
As we made our way to the fish farm, we were treated to a special sight, 🦅 eagle feeding time! These majestic birds are even more impressive in person. Our tour guide also told us that if we're lucky, we might catch a glimpse of the elusive "Lucky Dolphins" . These are pink dolphins that are known to swim these waters. Keep your 👀eyes peeled, and fingers crossed!
Next up on our tour was a visit to a traditional Malay fishing village. 🦐 Shrimp fishing is the main industry here, and we got to see firsthand how the shrimps are graded and prepared for sale. We also had the opportunity to watch the fishermen in action, using traditional methods to catch their daily haul. And of course, our knowledgeable tour guide was on hand to provide all the details and explanations.
D'port @ Kuala Sepetang (6pm-8pm)
After a full day of adventures, we were ready for a delicious meal at D'port @ Kuala Sepetang. Just be warned: the wait can be quite long, especially on weekends (the wait is usually more than 1 hour during the weekends). So make sure to come early to avoid missing out on the firefly tour later. Trust us, it's worth the effort to plan ahead and beat the crowds.
We ordered a sambal grilled fish, salted egg crab, fried squid, tom yam shrimp and salted fish kailan. Starving + long waiting time = we gobbled up everything at lightning ⚡speed!
Firefly Tour (8pm)
Whew, we barely made it to the jetty on time! At first, we tried to snap a few pictures with our 📱smartphones, but all we ended up with were tiny white dots on the screen. It was unfortunate that we weren't able to properly capture the magic on camera but it was an unforgettable experience all the same.
It turns out that sometimes, the beauty of nature can only be truly appreciated with our own 👀eyes. That's why we recommend coming to Kuala Sepetang to witness the magic for yourself. Our tour guide told us that the fireflies here only inhabit certain species of mangrove trees (Wow! That's an interesting fact!). After enjoying the fireflies tour, we headed back to our homestay for the night. The next day, we checked out at noon and made our way back to KL. It was a trip to remember.
All in all, we learned so much on this tour, from the crucial role of 🌳mangrove trees to the process of making charcoal and catching 🦐shrimp. It was also a relatively relaxing tour, as there wasn't much walking involved. Plus, all the restaurants and attractions are just a short walk away, making Kuala Sepetang an eco-tourism destination that's perfect for visiting with 👵👴elderly parents and children.

HEW SIN WEI
The trip to Kuala Selangor was last minute when a public holiday was just a day on the weekday. This place caught my interest because it is not crowded and has good reviews from the public. I arrived at the place at about 8.30 PM and the place was quiet and no visitors at all. Luckily someone from the motorbike arrives and allowed us to proceed for the firefly tour as per my booking. The weather and the date were perfect timing because of the high tide, dark clouds,s, and no moon. The boat is spacious and the tour guide was friendly and willing to share everything about fireflies. The tour was fun and enjoyable. I recommend this is a great place for a firefly visit.
