Valorant Champions 2022: Schedule, results, teams, prize pool, and where to watch

The tournament begins on August 31.

After a long and arduous journey through the VCT 2022 season, the top 16 teams in the world are finally set to compete in Valorant Champions 2022.

Like last year’s tournament, 10 teams qualified via VCT circuit points earned through Challengers and Masters events. The other six teams in the competition are the winners of their respective regional Last Chance Qualifiers.

With reigning world champions Acend failing to qualify, a new champion will also be crowned in Istanbul. All eyes will be on Masters Copenhagen winners FunPlus Phoenix and Masters Reykajvik 2022 champions OpTic Gaming , both heavy favorites to win it all.

Valorant Champions 2022 will also see the debut of Edward Gaming , the first Chinese team to compete on Valorant’s global stage. The team took the East Asia region by storm, punching their ticket to Istanbul off the back of an incredible 9-0 undefeated streak in the LCQ.

What is Valorant Champions 2022?

Valorant Champions Istanbul is the third and final event of the VCT 2022 season. It is the biggest event of the year and the culminating tournament of the season that all teams have been working toward.

The tournament features 16 of the best Valorant teams from North America, EMEA, Latin America, East Asia, and Asia Pacific.

Teams competing in Valorant Champions 2022

Unlike in previous Masters tournaments this year, every team in the competition will begin their Valorant Champions 2022 run in the group stage.

No teams will be seeded directly in the playoffs.

Format of Valorant Champions 2022

The tournament begins with a GSL-style group play, followed by an eight-team double elimination bracket. Teams were sectioned into four draw pools based on a combination of their respective final placements at Challengers and Masters events, and the strength of their respective region.

• Pool 1 — OpTic Gaming (North America rank 1), FunPlus Phoenix (EMEA rank 1), DRX (Korea), Paper Rex (APAC rank 1)
• Pool 2 — XSET (North America rank 2), Fnatic (EMEA rank 2), Leviatán (Latin America), Zeta Division (Japan)
• Pool 3 — 100 Thieves (North America LCQ winner), Team Liquid (EMEA LCQ winner), LOUD (Brazil), XERXIA Esports (APAC rank 2)
• Pool 4 — KRU Esports (South America LCQ winner 1), FURIA Esports (South America LCQ winner 2), BOOM Esports (APAC LCQ winner), Edward Gaming (East Asia LCQ winner)

Teams from each pool were randomly drawn into one of the four groups. Teams that were drawn into a group that had squads from the same region were placed into the next alphabetical sequential group.

If they were the final team to be drawn from their pool, and their group already had a squad from the same region, then they were moved back through the groups until they landed on a valid group.

After the group stage, a random draw will seed the Knockout Stage. The four teams that advance out of their group in first place will be randomly assigned a yet-to-be-determined second-place team from a different group.

All matches will play out in a best-of-three format, except for the lower bracket final and the grand final, which will be best-of-five games.

After a successful end to VCT 2021 circuit, Riot Games has announced a brand new series of events for the new year. The Valorant Champions Tour is back for 2022, and it’s better than ever. 

VCT 2021 was Valorant’s first official pro circuit, which brought some of the best teams in the world to the prestigious stage of Berlin. After a nail-biting final with Gambit, the championship series saw Acend lift the Champions 2021 trophy . The year-long competition has returned for 2022, and this time it’s better designed to bring younger talent to the fore. 

VCT 2022 format changes

Riot Games has changed the VCT format for 2022 to better facilitate independent tournament organizers and the female esports scene. The circuit will no longer have three Masters events and will culminate earlier to provide professional players a proper offseason break. 

VCT 2022 will have only two stages featuring Challengers and a Masters event. The two stages will help pick the participants of the Champions 2022 event, the calendar’s biggest LAN tournament. The Challengers stage will take place in one open qualifier, which will lead to multi-week league competition. Top teams will lock horns for a slot in the international Masters LAN tournament. Both Challengers events will have the same format for 2022 to find the ultimate champion for 2022. 

The year-long circuit will wrap up quicker this time around. The VCT Champions 2022 finals will take place sometime in September to set three months aside for the offseason. This will allow teams to swap rosters and pick new players. Third-party tournament organizers can also utilize this off-time to manage tournaments, including the best teams. 

Riot Games will be utilizing this offseason to focus more on marginalized players in Valorant. VCT Game Changers is set to kick off in March, but the third stage main event and first Game Changers LAN Championship will occur at the end of 2022. The format will be the same as 2021, with three series featuring an open qualifier and a double-elimination bracket. The developer has also teased a new tournament circuit for October, inspired by the Ignition series, but not much is known about it yet.

Valorant eSports enters at an even higher level than last year. Even the Challengers tournaments in the current league system are even more exciting than we thought. Yeah, none of us want to miss out on the highlights of VCT 2022 , which is why we have prepared all the important dates for you so that you can take time off from work to enjoy the high-quality Valorant gameplay.

VCT 2022: Stage 1 Schedule

According to official sources, all VCT 2022 Last Chance Qualifiers will take place in August, one month before Valorant Champions . These tournaments are a little far away at the moment, so we don't have any information on dates or location , but as soon as we find out, we'll update it.

VCT 2022: Slot Distribution

The slot distribution for Masters and Champions tournaments looks different for each region , and it's actually a little complicated. Interestingly, Champions slot will no longer be in the Masters tournament prize pool.

Just like last year, VCT Masters tournaments will be open to the teams that did the best at Challengers .

Interestingly, the Champions slot will no longer be in the Masters tournament prize pool. The only ways to qualify for Champions this year will be through:

• Being one of the top teams in the Regional VCT Circuit Points rankings
• Winning the Last Chance Qualifier

VALORANT Champions Tour Game Changers: Everything You Need To Know

On February 23, we announced the launch of the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) Game Changers : a year-long program with the goal of creating new opportunities and exposure for marginalized genders within VALORANT, through a combination of community events and top-tier competition.

We believe our esport should reflect the diverse and global nature of the competitive VALORANT community. VCT Game Changers is our way of building a more representative VALORANT Champions Tour.

Here are all the details on key dates and upcoming events in North America:

VCT Game Changers Series

The VCT Game Changers Series is an array of top tier competitions that will take place around the world during the course of 2021.

The first tournament kicks off in North America and boasts a prize pool of $50,000 USD. The format consists of open qualifiers, from which the Top 8 teams will advance to the final tournament.

VALORANT NA is partnering with Nerd Street Gamers to operate the first Game Changers Series event this March, during the following dates:

• Open Qualifiers: March 19 - 21
• Top 8 Tournament: March 25 - 28

All participants must be a verified member of the GALORANTs Discord Community , in addition to registering for the competition through Nerd Street Gamers . Deadline to register is Wednesday, March 17.

Where to watch: The Top 8 tournament will be broadcast on twitch.tv/nerdstgamers and twitch.tv/valorant_esports_na . Additional details on the broadcast will be released closer to the event.

VCT Game Changers Academy

The VCT Game Changers Academy program will host six monthly tournaments, giving players even more opportunities to compete at the semi-pro and grassroots level. These Academy events will be organized in partnership with GALORANTs, one of the largest communities within VALORANT. In addition to a prize pool, each tournament will offer extra incentives such as merchandise, various in-game rewards, or a trip to an offline VALORANT event.

The VALORANT Champions Tour is back and the second run of the VCT scheduled for 2022 will look to build on the success created during its inaugural campaign.

Several new initiatives and changes have been announced for 2022 , including the creation of national leagues, the expansion of Game Changers, the alteration of the Challengers format, the inclusion of “offseason” events run by third-party organizers, and more.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to all things VCT 2022.

VALORANT Champions Tour 2022 format

There are going to be a lot of changes to the VCT format for 2022, but the overall premise is still the same. Each region will have a Challengers stage with the winning teams advancing to international LAN competition at Masters events before a final Champions tournament at the end of the year.

This year, however, instead of three stages of Challengers and Masters events before Champions in December, there will be two stages prior to a Champions event currently set for September. The final months of the year will be set aside for “offseason series and events” run by third-party organizers.

The main events for each Challengers stage are changing, too. Instead of three separate double-elimination brackets stemming from open qualifiers for each Challengers main event, each Challengers stage will feature one qualifier leading to a seven-week main event, with five weeks of round-robin play culminating in a double-elimination bracket to determine who will go to Masters. Masters Two will award an automatic berth to Champions for the first-place finisher.

Within EMEA, eight different regional leagues are being run alongside the Challengers events: Spain, France, Turkey, CIS, MENA, DACH (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), Northern Europe, and Eastern Europe. The winner of each league’s season advances to a promotion tournament with two spots in Challengers Two on the line.

Additionally, Game Changers is returning as a supplement to the VCT for 2022. The format will be the same as 2021, with three different series featuring an open qualifier and a double-elimination bracket. This year, however, Game Changers will culminate in the first international Game Changers Championship.
