11 fun things to do in Bangalore on a backpacker budget

Bangalore is one of South India’s most cosmopolitan cities, it’s easy to get around, has great restaurants and nightlife and has great links to other places, like Gokarna and Hampi. Here are 11 fun and cheap things to do during your visit to Bangalore in Karnataka.

Bangalore is now known as Bengaluru but I’ve called it Bangalore as many people still call it that and search under that name.

Bengaluru means ‘town of boiled beans’ but I can assure you that there is much more on offer here for travellers of every budget!

Bangalore is aimed more at business travellers than backpackers but it does have some funky cheap hotels in the city centre. We stayed at an OYO 1175 UNO Inn which was next to a foul-smelling polluted river but had a bar with free drinks for women and good WiFi. It was near the botanical gardens but not any other sights.

If you position yourself close to the metro, then you can get to most places in Bangalore that you want to visit. The metro is really good and a journey of a few stops costs about 20-25 rupees. It’s similar to the Delhi metro but with less harassment and fewer people.

I recommend starting your trip around the Krishna Rajendra market as it has a metro stop and it’s close to a cluster of sights. We started our trip at the Tipi Sultan Palace near the market.

1. Tipi Sultan Palace

This palace was the summer residence of the Tipi Sultan. To get here, go left out of Krishnarajendra Market metro and see the bull temple, fort and market while you’re here as they’re all close by. The palace is full of teenagers taking selfies and you can see it all in about 10 minutes, if you’re on a tight budget I would miss this and go to the bull temple instead to save money. The bull (Nandi) temple is about 1km further down the road, but if you’ve been to the one in Mysore then I wouldn’t bother and I’d head to the market instead.

Cost: 300 rupees for foreigners.

2. Bangalore Palace

Bangalore’s most famous tourist attraction is Bangalore Palace and it’s also the furthest away. You can get here by tuk-tuk or you can walk from the Cantt station. The palace is extremely popular with middle-class tourists and there was a very opulent wedding on when we visited. If it looks familiar to you as a Brit, then that may be because it was modelled on Windsor Castle. The royal family live here and if you don’t want to see the fancy interiors then you can still poke around outside for free.

Cost: 500 rupees for foreigners. Open 10-5.30pm.

3. Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath

The Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath is a display at an arts college that is much cheaper than the National Gallery and about a 20-minute walk away. It has a decent art collection over several floors which really demonstrates the breadth of traditional artwork that can be found all over India. Students also exhibit on the bottom floor for free, often on quite emotive subjects like female oppression, rape and homophobia. If you look out of the window you can see students carving stone sculptures in the outdoor workshop.

Cost: 100 rupees. Open Mon-Sat, 10-6pm. Metro: Sampige Road (1.1km).

4. National Gallery of Modern Art, Bangalore

You can walk to the National Gallery from the Bangalore Palace but it is about 30 minutes, or you can get a tuk-tuk from the palace, depending on how hot it is! The gallery is considered to be a world-class modern art collection but it is quite expensive for foreign tourists. Delhi and Mumbai also have art galleries of this ilk, so Bangalore is the smallest city to be bestowed with such an impressive collection.

Cost: 500 rupees for foreigners. Open 10-5pm. Closed Mondays.

5. Krishna Rajendra Market

Krishna Rajendra Market is a sprawling market based around a square building between the KR Market stop and Chikkapete. The outdoor section sells mainly fruit and veg whereas indoors is the flower market as well as household goods. It’s a nice place to experience the hustle and bustle as well as wonder how on earth they manage to sell so much food and so many flowers in one day.

Cost: Free (unless you buy something!)

6. Bangalore Fort

If you’re close to the market then you may as well have a wander into the fort for free, as it’s so close. There isn’t too much to see but it is a nice place to escape the crowds as well as to combine with the market, bull temple, and the Tipi Sultan Palace.

7. Sri Chamarajendra Park aka Cubbon Park

Cubbon Park is partially under construction next to the metro station, but it does have rose gardens, pavilions and some nice buildings and monuments including the library. Opposite the park is the huge Vidana Soudha government building and a Mahatma Gandhi statue, you can’t go inside but it is an iconic Bangalore building. You can find it opposite the Dr. B R Ambedkar metro station.

8. Museums and architecture near Cubbon Park

The most important museum next to Cubbon Park is the red Government Museum which has an overview of the Karnataka area, including some relics from Hampi. Next to it is the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum and the Venkatappa Art Gallery. Cubbon park is definitely a spot to walk around as it is has a few attractions nearby and it is a great area for people-watching.

Cost: Government Museum – 20 rupees

9. Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens

Lal Bagh Botanical Gardens is a really lovely park, full of plants, artwork and even a small lake. It’s a good place to watch wildlife as you can see kingfishers, cormorants, egrets and swamphens in the lake as well as the alarmingly obese bonnet macaques. The macaques ‘mug’ people with fizzy drinks and people hand them over which is how the monkeys got so big. Bangalore has a large population of overweight dogs as well. If you’re a foreigner then you may well get asked for selfies in the park. It is easy to access from the Lal Bagh metro station.

Cost: Free or 20 rupees depending on which gate you go through!

10. Eat delicious food

There is a wealth of fantastic food on offer in Bangalore, for all tastes and budgets. Even for faddy vegetarians like me! My top recommendation is the Bangalore Cafe on the Richmond Circle Flyover which has great milkshakes and bao buns. Bangalore has some of the best international food of the whole of South India so get involved!

11. Drink delicious beer

If you like beer, then a trip to Bangalore wouldn’t be complete without a trip to 100 Feet Road where you can go on an actual bar crawl. Bangalore is one of the few cities in India with a big open drinking culture and its own craft beer. I would start at the famous Toit Pub and work your way from there, depending on what appeals to you. There are also some great fast food places on this road to soak up the beer.

Booze tours: The Bangalore whiskey tour is currently not running with no indication of whether it will start again.

I enjoyed being in such a cosmopolitan Indian city and its also quite walkable and organised compared to other cities we’d visited. It isn’t too busy and has lots of green spaces, although it rained while we were there which completely flooded the roads! So while it isn’t perfect, it is friendly, easy, has a great metro, fabulous food and drink and a lovely arts culture. I’d heard good things before I came and it certainly lived up to that. In Lal Bagh park I saw some men feeding a sick palm squirrel with water and that was one of the nicest things I witnessed in South India.

1. Cubbon Park

Cubbon park - Places to visit in Bangalore in 1 day

Start your one day in Bangalore by taking an early-morning stroll in Cubbon Park . Among the hustle and bustle of the city, you’ll find this expansive area to be relaxed and calming. Here you’ll find people running, doing yoga, walking their dogs and even cycling. It’s great to see a whole bunch of people with varied interests coming together with one common intent - to relax and maintain their fitness. Granted that my image of Cubbon park doesn't look that appealing but trust me, this Bangalore park is better than my shoddy image of it.

Here is a complete guide to Cubbon Park - one of the best places to visit in Bangalore in 1 day.

2. Vidhan Soudha

Vidhan Soudha - Things to do in Bangalore in 1 day - Bangalore itinerary

Vidhan Soudha, an iconic landmark of Bangalore is just a short walking distance from Cubbon Park and one of the best places to visit in Bangalore in 1 day. Not only is it the state legislature of Karnataka, it is also the largest one in India. Vidhan Soudha in Karnataka is the epitome of grandeur. As a matter of fact, it costs 20 million rupees to maintain it’s splendour annually. Just opposite to this marvel lies the High Court of Karnataka, another beautiful building.

3. Breakfast at Little Green Cafe

Where to eat in Bangalore in one day - Little green cafe

It’s no doubt that there’s no shortage of awesome cafes in Bangalore. Because I had limited time and I wanted to visit one of the top instagrammble cafes in Bangalore, I walked toward Little Green Cafe. Because this cafe is a 15 minute walk from the Vidhan Soudha , you will save time when you have just one day in Bangalore.

From the minute I walked in, I fell in love with everything from the decor, the lights, the table tops, the cutlery to the extensive breakfast menu. I went for the Namaste Omelette , which was prepared in the Indian style using tomato, chillies and onions. It came with large toasts, a crunchy salad and grilled tomato. Everything on the plate was hearty and delicious. I honestly wish I could’ve come back here for lunch. In any case, there’s always a next time.

4. Bangalore Palace

Best places to visit in Bangalore in one day - Bangalore Palace

Next stop is another iconic sight in Bangalore which can't be skipped from the places to visit in Bangalore in one day - the Bangalore Palace . Now, I felt the camera fees for the palace were a little steep. I bought a ticket for myself and paid a fee for just my DSLR camera, not my phone camera, which brought my total upto almost 1000 rupees.

Coming to the palace itself, the Bangalore Palace grounds were well-kept and gave away a great view of the palace. The tickets purchased can be used to access the grounds, the inside of the palace as well as a Bangalore Palace audio guide . The guides were insightful and gave away details about the palace, it’s residents and guests. Be sure to keep your ticket safe until the end of the visit since the staff does random checks at various points in the palace.

5. Tipu Sultan's Palace

Things to do in Bangalore in 1 day - Tipu Sultan Palace

After lunch, head to Tipu Sultan Palace which used to be the summer residence of Tipu Sultan , the ruler of the Kingdom Mysore during the 1700s. The rooms in the ground floor of the palace contain relics and pictures depicting Tipu Sultan and his reign. While the palace isn’t much and can be covered within 10-15 minutes, it’s just one of those Bangalore attractions which can’t be skipped and so I have included it in my 1-day Bangalore itinerary.

Where to eat in Bangalore in 1 day - Truffles Cafe in Bangalore

No trip to Bangalore will be complete without paying a visit to what is one of the best cafes in Bangalore. Truffles, located in Indiranagar, as mentioned earlier, is famous for its burgers and cold coffees . I had the cheese burger and asked for a brownie points cold coffee to go with it. The coffee came with a whole brownie, pulled apart into pieces and a giant scoop of vanilla ice-cream, topped with some chocolate sauce. That one coffee was way too delicious and way too much for one person. The burger had fantastic flavour and the potato chips were yum. Without a doubt, it’s one of the must visit places in Bangalore.

10 Best Tourist Places to Visit in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, formerly Bangalore , is the capital city of Karnataka in south India. The city has earned several names such as Silicon Valley of India, Pub Capital of India, Air Conditioned City, and City of Gardens. However, prior to the IT revolution, Bengaluru was known as Pensioners' Paradise.

Now, it's a wonderful blend of past and present. Although Bengaluru may not have as many iconic attractions as other major cities in India, it does have a great mix of history, architecture, culture, spirituality, and nature.

Bangalore Palace

Built for Chamaraja Wadiyar X in 1887, the design of Bangalore Palace was inspired by England's Windsor Castle . As a result, this evocative palace has Tudor-style architecture with fortified towers, arches, green lawns, and elegant woodcarvings in its interiors.

The royal family still lives here today, and the palace is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays.

National Gallery of Modern Art

If you're an art lover, don't miss visiting the National Gallery of Modern Art on Palace Road. This gallery, which opened in 2009, is the third of its kind in India (the others are in Delhi and Mumbai).

It's housed in a Colonial mansion with a garden setting and has two interconnected wings, one of which features works from the early 18th century up until India's Independence while the other displays work from a large number of modern and contemporary artists.

The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m until 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. It's closed on Monday. There is a cafe on the premises as well, which is open fewer hours than the gallery itself.

Tipu Sultan's Palace and Fort

Situated inside the Bangalore Fort area, Tipu Sultan's Palace was originally built by Kempe Gowda using mud. Later, Hyder Ali started reconstruction in Indo-Islamic architecture. This was completed by his son, Tipu Sultan, in 1791.

The Hindu temple seen in the courtyard of the fort is the proof of Tipu Sultan's religious tolerance. The palace is open daily from 8.30 a.m. until 5.30 p.m. daily. Combine visiting it with nearby Krishna Rajendra Market.

Krishna Rajendra (KR) Market

This vivid, traditional local market is an assault on the senses and a treat for photographers, and in the middle of it, you'll find Bengaluru's bustling flower market. The market also sells a variety of fresh produce, spices, and copper items.

Go there in the early morning to best experience the colors and crowds, when piles of fresh stock are being unloaded and sold.

Lalbagh Botanical Garden

This expansive garden started out as a private Mughal-style garden for the city's royal rulers. It was established in 1760 by Hyder Ali and later extended by his son Tipu Sultan.

It now covers 240 acres and derives its name from the red roses that bloom throughout the year there. The garden is said to have the most diverse species of plants in the world. Its focal point is a majestic glasshouse, built in 1889 to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales. It was designed along the lines of the Crystal Palace in London.

The garden is open daily from 6.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. throughout the year. It takes on a festive look during India's Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations, with a captivating show of over 200 varieties of flowers. The show also features an exhibition of hybrid vegetables.

Cubbon Park

Occupying a 300-acre area in Bangalore's business district, Cubbon Park is a popular place for walkers, joggers, nature lovers, and anyone who just wants to laze around. The park was named after the erstwhile Commissioner of Mysore, Sir Mark Cubbon. Many ornamental and flowering trees, both exotic and indigenous, can be found there. Kids will enjoy the special Bal Bhavan play area and aquarium inside the park.

Vidhana Soudha

First opened in 1956, Vidana Soudha is a landmark of Bengaluru and is located next to Cubbon Park. This enormous building is a massive example of neo-Dravidian architecture, complete with four domes on its four corners. It houses the Legislative Chamber of Karnataka Government and accommodates many other government departments. Unfortunately, it's not open to the public but is stunningly illuminated at night.

Attara Kacheri (High Court) and Surroundings

This eye-catching red, two-storied building, built in 1867 under the reign of Tipu Sultan, has magnificent neoclassical architecture. It houses the High Court and many lower courts, and sits opposite Vidana Soudha at the entrance to Cubbon Park.

Close to the Court is the red, Gothic-style State Central Library building, with imposing stone and fluted pillars. Nearby, the highlight at the Government Museum is a collection of artifacts and stone carvings dating back to the 12th century, and excavated from places including Hampi . Adjacent to the Museum is Venkatappa Art Gallery, devoted to displaying famous paintings, plaster of Paris works and wooden sculptures of renowned artist Venkatappa (who painted for the royal family). Tickets for the museum also provide entry to the art gallery.

Ulsoor Lake

CamBuff/Getty Images

Picturesque Ulsoor Lake is spread over an area of 125 acres in the heart of the city, north of M.G. Road. It was constructed by Kempe Gowda II. It's open daily, except Wednesdays, from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. Boating facilities are provided by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation. There's also a walking track around the lake.

Spiritual and Religious Places

Richard I'Anson/Getty Images

Bengaluru is the home of many of India's spiritual gurus, and the city has a rich religious culture. There are many diverse places of worship, including ashrams, mosques, and churches.

Consider seeing many of the city's attractions on a Bengaluru walking tour.   Alternatively, Viator in conjunction with Tripadvisor offers a comprehensive Private Full Day Bangalore (Bengaluru) City Tour and Experiential Culture Tour of Bangalore (Bengaluru) , bookable online.

It's also worth exploring the area around Bengaluru. There are many places of interest, whether you're after an escape from city life or are a visitor who wants to spend a day enjoying the abundant beauty of Mother Nature.

Located in South Bengaluru, the Lalbagh Botanical Garden is not only one of the largest botanical gardens in India, but also the first of its kind, with planned routes, glasshouses and ornamental flowers growing throughout the property. The garden itself is spread over an area of 240 acres and its construction was commissioned by the famous ruler Hyder Ali. It was finally completed by his son- Tipu Sultan- who designed the gardens keeping in mind the beautiful gardens of Sira in Tumkur District in Karnataka.Lalbagh is home to exotic flowers that were imported by the Sultan from countries like France, Persia, Arabia, Afghanistan, etc. Therefore, flowers that were previously never seen in India were first witnessed in this historical garden. Trees that were imported by Tipu Sultan from all over the world can still be found growing here.Apart from the exotic trees, visitors can also catch sight of some rare birds such as the Myna, pond heron, purple moorhen, parakeets, Brahminy kites, the common egret and much more. Apart from the stunning flora and fauna of the Lalbagh Botanical Garden, it has another striking attraction, which is the Lalbagh rock. This rock, which is said to be over 3000 years old, is one of the oldest rocks in the world and can be found in the center of the garden.

Bangalore Palace

In the technology-driven, futuristic Silicon Valley of India, monuments of historical significance boasting of a glorious past are also abundant. The historical heritage of the city is so magnificent and eminent that it rises to prominence on its own. One such landmark is the Tudor style Bangalore Palace. The Palace is a perfect representation of the lavishness and splendour with which India's most resilient dynasties ruled. Famous for its opulent architecture and amusement activities, the Palace is visited by several visitors every day. The colossal Palace boasts of massive courtyards, bright interiors, kingly grounds, splendid spiral staircases, stately towers and a luscious garden in a proud display of posh regality.Anyone who admires classic architecture and artistry would be delighted to experience it first hand at this Palace. It also houses an amusement park in its enclave to the delight of many younger visitors. Having been a private residence to the Wodeyar family, Bangalore palace offers a linear perspective into the royal life of the forepassed era. It is plush with a vibrant and varied collection of ancient royal artefacts, paraphernalia, hunting trophies and family photos. The Palace houses some of the most famous paintings of the 19th Century, including the works of one of India's most celebrated artists Raja Ravi Verma. The Palace grounds very often become venues for concerts and festivals. World-renowned artists like Enrique and Guns N' Roses have graced the palace grounds with their talent and presence. The Palace hence combines the richness and luxury of royal history with the vivacious and exuberant demeanour of the youth. Bangalore Palace HistoryOriginally a property of Reverend J Garrett, the principal of a school in the cantonment town at that time, the area where the Palace is now located was purchased from him by the British Guardians of Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar for 40,000 rupees. The construction of the palace began in the year 1874. Mr John Cameron of Lalbagh was assigned the task of landscaping Palace along with its surroundings. The complete construction of the palace was completed in the year, 1878.The Palace saw many additions and modifications in its architecture in subsequent years. Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar added a few portions like the twin external staircase, the platform for musicians etc. outside the Durbar Hall. In 1970, HH Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar transferred ownership of the property to two companies, Chamundi Hotels and Shree Venkateshwara Real Estate Enterprises. However, this transaction was later shown to be fraudulent. A legal battle followed between this deal and Jayachamarajendra's son, Srikanta Datta. The five sisters of Srikanta Datta are now in possession of sections of the 28 acres of the Palace. In the year 1990 Srikant Datta finally compromised with the Chamaraju group and got back his part of the property including the main Palace except for 45 acres that the Chamaraju group still retains. Architecture:The Palace showcases exquisite wooden interiors surrounded by pristine walls. The Palace is enclosed within beautiful gardens. The architecture is a medley of Tudor style and Scottish style and has gothic undertones. A lot of physical artefacts inside are of British origin. It is said that the architecture of this building is inspired by that of the Windsor Castle and other architectural marvels of England and Normandy. The most prominent features of the Palace like the two-level granite structure of the fortified towers and turreted parapets take direct inspiration from the Tudor building styles. The entrance is decorated with grand Roman arches. The exterior of the building is covered in eccentric shapes and angles. The exterior walls are of a blushing cinnabar shade that gives the building a quaint Victorian vibe. The floor of the open courtyard of the Palace is adorned with granite seats covered with azure ceramic tiles. The ground floor also contains a beautifully decorated ballroom. The first floor of the Palace has a distinct chamber known as the Durbar Hall attached to an ornate staircase. This hall is famous for the enormous elephant head that is mounted in it and its gothic style tinted glass windows.
