Fabulous 4,000 acre ranch in Ka’a’awa Valley with huge variety of super fun activities from beach to ocean to zip lines to horses, jeeps, buses and more. Breathtakingly beautiful mountains. One of the best places in Hawaii Nei.

Our family took the Jurassic Park tour yesterday. Our son was interested in this and we decided to go. Our tour guide, Sunshine, was wonderful. She knew so many facts about the movies and the ranch, made the tour enjoyable (even for those of us who knew little about the movies), and was an expert in making sure we took pictures. I would highly recommend visiting the ranch!

A wide variety of tours and experiences are available. We did the Jurassic Adventure Tour, which focused on sites from the Jurassic Park franchise. There are lots of cool props, locations, and trivia from the films. Our tour guide, Sunshine, was efficient, friendly, and had great jokes to make the tour memorable. It was a fantastic stop on our vacation in the islands. Highly recommend!

Unique and unforgettable experience . We went on the Jurassic 2.5 hour tour and saw panoramic views of the valley and film sets. Also passed by other Hollywood movie sets . Guide was knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor.

Kolomenskoe

Kolomenskoye Museum and Park

The chief attraction of the park is undoubtedly the stone Church of the Ascension of the Lord. It was constructed in 1532 by order of Tsar Vasily III to commemorate the birth of his son and heir, Ivan the Terrible. But there is a lot more to see in the park: the pretty Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan – with its bright azure domes and plenty of gold. Further into the park there is a charming Church of the Beheading of St John the Baptist, built by Ivan the Terrible to mark his coronation.

Kuskovo

Kuskovo Park

Kuskovo Park is one of the oldest country estates in Moscow. It was given to General Sheremetev by Peter the Great in 1715, but was left to fall into neglect before being plundered by Napoleon’s troops in 1812. Nowadays the estate has been restored to its former glory and is a good example of Russian 18th Century imperial architecture. The palace is a fine and rare example of wooden neoclassicism. It was completed in 1775, and the rich interiors remain unchanged since 1779. It includes a room hung with exclusive exquisite Flemish tapestries, an abundance of silk wallpaper and an impressive collection of 18th century European and Russian paintings. The palace looks onto the lake, which is surrounded by smaller pavilions: pretty Italian, Dutch and Swiss Cottages, Blank’s Hermitage and the old Orangery, where the State Ceramics Museum is located now, an extensive and absorbing collection of porcelain from the 18th century to the present day. On the other side of the lake is a large wood popular with local cyclists and joggers.

The best souvenirs in Moscow

With a unique culture and long history, you'll find plenty of interesting souvenirs to pick up during your travels to Moscow. By far one of the most popular inexpensive mementos you can pick up is a Matryoshka or Russian nested doll. Another great souvenir you can pick up is a fur hat to keep you warm during your vacation and when you return home.

If you're looking to splash out on something special, pick up an ornate samovar, a type of traditional kettle dating back to the 18th century. Moscow also has plenty of culinary treats that you might want to buy as gifts for folks back home. Muscovites are famous for their love of vodka, and you won't have trouble finding a unique bottle in the capital. Russia is also known for producing world-class caviar, in case you're looking to indulge in the finer things.

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

A mulled wine with a view

A mulled wine with a view

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Propaganda club in Moscow

Propaganda club in Moscow

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!

Moscow Highlights: Things to do in Moscow in 4 Days

Red Square is one of many Moscow highlights, Russia

Albom Adventures stands on the side of peace. We visited Russia years ago and have opted to keep this page of Moscow highlights as a historical reference rather than as a planning tool.

Moscow is one of those cities that I had always wanted to visit. I had great fantasies about intrigue and drama, Russian dancing and puppets, food and friendship.

Honestly, I am not sure what I was really expecting, but Moscow did not disappoint. At the time of our travels, Moscow was one of the most expensive cities in the world to visit, and we want to see as much as possible with just 4 days in Moscow.

In retrospect, this was not a good plan. The difficulty and cost of obtaining our visas and then getting to Russia warranted both a much longer stay and a visit to other parts of the country. To be honest, I can’t imagine ever doing it again.

Moscow highlights

  • Bolshoi Theatre

Inside the Kremlin

church in the Kremlin

Home to the President of the Russian Federation, the Kremlin always seemed a bit of a mystery, a secret and forbidden destination. In reality, it was easy to get a tour of the Kremlin.

The historic fortified complex feels even bigger once inside than it does from the street. It is located in the heart of Moscow, overlooking the Moskva River (to the south), Saint Basil’s Cathedral and the rest of Red Square (to the east) and Alexander Garden (to the west).

Aside from the president, the Kremlin is home to four palaces, four cathedrals, several towers, and additional buildings. We also saw the Tsar cannon (the world’s largest cannon) and the world’s largest bell. The cannon was never fired, and the bell never rung as it cracked at some point during the 3 years to fully cast it.

St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Rusia

St. Basil’s Cathedral is possibly the most famous symbol of Moscow and is considered an irreplaceable national monument by the Soviets. And as beautiful as it is during the day, Moscow at night is even more impressive.

Built by Ivan the Terrible, the official name of this Orthodox structure is the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed.

Red Square in Moscow, Russia

Historic Red Square, the very heart of the city, is the largest square in Russia and a must-see among the Moscow highlights. It covers almost 800,000 square feet.

On the north end, we see the State Historical Museum, a commonly featured landmark of Red Square. On the southern end is St. Basil’s Cathedral.

Throughout history, the square has always been a marketplace as well as a political platform, at times used for parades, demonstrations, executions, and speeches. In fact, it is here that the May Day Parade (that we accidentally joined and were not permitted to leave) ended as participants acknowledged the officials who waved from a platform.

Two other significant landmarks in Red Square are the mausoleum of Vladimir Lenin and GUM, the largest department store in Russia.

Traditional Street performers on Arbat Street in Moscow Russia

Arbat Street, or “The Arbat,” as locals call it, is a kilometre-long pedestrian-only road lined with cafes and restaurants, artists, street performers, a few random museums, and several over-priced souvenir shops. However, most vendors seemed open to negotiation.

The Arbat refers to “old” Arbat Street, one of the oldest surviving streets in Moscow. (First recorded mentions of Arbat Street date back to 1493.) There is a “new” Arbat Street nearby. It’s home to many of Moscow’s rich and features some of Moscow’s most expensive restaurants and nightclubs.

Today, old Arbat Street is a perfect spot for people-watching.

Getting here is easy on the metro. Either the Smolenskaya (both blue lines) or Arbatskaya (both blue lines, from Dark Blue line, take the west exit) station will get you to Arbat Street.

Gate-Church of the Transfiguration in Novodevichy Convent in Moscow Russia

Novodevichy Convent and Cemetery is one of the more interesting places we visited in Moscow. Historically, it has close ties to the Kremlin.

Built during the 16th and 17th centuries, it is interwoven in Russia’s political, cultural, and religious history. Novodevichy is Russia’s only convent that served as both an ancient nunnery and a fortress. Today, it is a working religious institution and tourist destination.

Its new cemetery is considered one of the most prestigious in the city.

It was the women who came here to “take the veil” that fascinated us the most. From the 16th-18th centuries, women from the tsarist dynasty, as well as other wealthy and nobility families, were sent here to “retire” and for their protection, many against their will.

Novodevichy features eight cathedrals and six residential or service buildings. The Novodevichy ensemble is a UNESCO world heritage site since 2004.

Moscow metro

moscow metro statue

More than just an efficient way to get around the city, the Moscow Metro is a destination in itself. Many of the stations were built in the Soviet era. Each is unique, yet all are clean, loaded with artwork, and filled with history.

Moscow Metro tours seem quite popular, but we opted to do it ourselves and made it a game, allowing each of our girls to take us around to a series of stations.

It is more complicated than other subway systems we have used. Many of the stops are transfer points between two or sometimes three stations, with long tunnels and stairs/escalators between the stations and, as one would expect, all of the writing is in Cyrillic.

Despite plenty of police around, when we tried to ask for help, they looked straight through us as if we didn’t exist. We quickly gave up asking and figured it out on our own.

More Moscow highlights

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow tallest Orthodox church in the world

Still more Moscow highlights:

  • Christ the Savior Cathedral is the tallest Orthodox church in the world.
  • Kitay-Gorod is an old city area full of breathtaking churches.
  • The Bolshoi Theatre , Moscow’s largest theatre, is home to the ballet. We considered getting tickets until we saw the cost.
  • Kazan Cathedral houses the most important Orthodox icon in the world.
  • Manezhnaya Square and Moscow Hotel were made famous from the Stolichnaya Vodka label.
  • Peter the Great statue is considered the most controversial monument in Moscow. When originally cast, it had the head of Christopher Columbus. The plan was to sell it to America, but the USA didn’t want to purchase it, so Russia changed the head.
  • Changing of the Guard takes place dailyt at the eternal flame of the tomb of the unknown soldier.
  • The Seven Sisters are a group of seven skyscrapers in Moscow designed in the Stalinist style. According to our guide, they are complete cities built under one roof.
  • Gorky Park , which we passed by on a river cruise, is a recreation area from the Soviet era.

Moscow Travel Tips

  • Before heading out for the day, have a good look at the map and ask for help in your hotel. Don’t count on anyone helping you on the streets or in the metro station.
  • Stand on the right and walk on the left on the escalators. Note that locals have limited patience for those who get it wrong. (I learned quickly from my mistake).
  • Most importantly – learn the Cyrillic word for entrance, exit and transfer (if using the metro). If you get on an exit escalator when you meant to transfer, you will pay again to get back into the system.
  • Dress respectfully if you are planning to enter any of the Orthodox churches. Women should cover their heads and shoulders, while men should wear long pants.

Perhaps you already know, but there is a great difference between Moscow, St. Petersburg, and all other towns and cities in Russia. Visiting the countryside is a great opportunity to travel the real Russia and to see the common life of ordinary people. The best choice for a one-day Russian countryside experience is the Vladimir and Suzdal tour.

Vladimir and Suzdal are small towns that are famous worldwide because of their great history and picturesque architecture with numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the 12th century. Aside from golden cupolas of stunning churches and monasteries, you will experience a very rural real Russian outlook with bubbling streams and grassy meadows, chickens and livestock, and interesting and authentic local residents. All are a common sight on the streets, some of which remain unpaved. Be ready for a full-day trip and many unforgettable experiences during your Russian holidays!

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The Alexander Garden

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Moscow Itinerary: how to spend 4 days in Moscow

Due to the current situation, I advice against travel to Moscow and Russia at the moment. All affiliated links related to Russia have been removed. But I have decided to keep my posts about Russia as it remains a beautiful country. I hope that circumstances change and that travel is possible again in the near future.

Moscow is the second largest city in Europe with an enormous amount of things to do. Like Russia, it is an intriguing and highly diverse multicultural city with lots of history, arts, culture and architecture. Therefore it is no surprise that many are overwhelmed when trying to make their own Moscow itinerary.

This Moscow itinerary is all about how to spend 4 days in Moscow to help you get the most out of your time.

My Moscow itinerary

Moscow is not a city you can visit in a few days. Personally, I believe that even 4 days in Moscow is way too little. But, I realize that for a lot of travellers that is all they have. In the end, Russia has a lot to offer and is much more than Moscow alone.

After two visits I still have a love hate relationship with Moscow. It is not my favourite city and there are a lot of things I dislike about Moscow. The congested traffic, pollution, poor roads and poverty. The gap between the rich and poor is huge and it is obvious that there are a lot of social problems in the city.

On the other hand, it is impossible to be bored in Moscow. I was there for a week and every day was filled with lots of fun and interesting activities. This might sound strange, but even though I didn’t like Moscow, I had a really nice time there. So much so, that I won’t mind coming back, because I know it will be great again.

Moscow is like a babushka, a Russian old lady. With age she might have lost some of her beauty, but also has many interesting stories to tell. She might come across as cold, stern and indifferent at first, but once you get to know her she has a heartwarming and welcoming soul.

In this post I have made a 4 day Moscow itinerary with some of my favourite activities.

Moscow Kremlin skyline

How to spend 4 days in Moscow?

Moscow itinerary day 1: red square & kremlin.

Start your first day of this Moscow itinerary in the heart of Moscow. Of course, I am talking about the Red square and the Kremlin. The oldest and most beautiful parts of the city.

You can check my self guided free walking tour of moscow if you like to explore on your own.

The red square is probably the most iconic place in Moscow and is packed with the city’s top attractions. You will likely spend most of your morning here to see them.

St Basil cathedral

Let’s start with the St Basil cathedral. This church is as colourful inside as it is from the outside. It was built by Tsar Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century to celebrate the capture of the cities Kazan and Astrakhan.

The building has a unique shape that is supposed to look like a bonfire that rises up to the sky. Actually the whole complex represents ten different sanctuaries. It started with a simple building on the grave of Saint Basil, but it expanded over the years. For example, the onion domes with the vivid and bright colours and the interior mural paintings were a later addition in the 17th and 18th centuries.

In Soviet times the church was appropriated by the state. It became a museum, which it still is today. The entrance fee is well worth the price. Inside you will be able to visit all of the 9 different sanctuaries, each with beautiful mural paintings and ancient wooden iconostasis.

St Basil cathedral Moscow

Kazan cathedral

The 17th century Kazan cathedral was one of the most important churches in Moscow, but didn’t survive Stalin’s mission to clean the red square from religious buildings. It was destroyed, but not forgotten and after the fall of the Soviet Union it was the first church to be rebuilt.

It’s small chapel is once again an active place of worship. It’s interior might not be as spectacular as the Basil cathedral, but it feels much more like a real church and there is a peaceful quiet atmosphere.

Kazan Cathedral at the Red Square in Moscow

Resurrection gate

The resurrection gate is not just a gate that gives access to the red square, but is also home to another, very small, holy chapel. The keeper of the gate icon inside is believed to perform miracles for those that pray before it. Traditionally, everyone, including the tsars, did so before entering the square. Nowadays, religious persons also still do.

Resurrection Gate at the Red Square in Moscow

State history museum

The S tate history museum is the perfect place to learn more about Russian history. From the Mongol invasions and the very first Tsars that ruled this vast country to the Bolshevik revolution. The rooms have rich interior decorations and are part of the attraction.

Unfortunately if you want to see the Kremlin on the same day, as I describe in this 4 day Moscow itinerary, you might not have time to see this museum properly. If you want to see this museum it is better to spread this day out over two and focus on the red square on your first day and the Kremlin on the second day.

Gum department store

The historic 19th century trading arcade remains one of Moscow’s most important department stores. Nowadays GUM has mostly upmarket brand stores. Even if you are not planning to buy anything, the architecture makes it worth a visit inside

GUM department store at the Red Square in Moscow

Lunch tip : After much exploration you are probably getting hungry. Being in the heart of Moscow there aren’t a lot of budget options, except for Stolovaya no 57 . This restaurant on the top floor of the GUM department store has a good choice of Russian food for very reasonable prices.

Lenin mausoleum

Finish your time at the Red square by standing in line to say your goodbye to Lenin. The lines are long and security is tight, but it is moving pretty fast as the guards are urging you to move on. You will only get a glimpse of the embalmed body of Lenin.

It’s not sure for how long you can still see him. Keeping his body in the current state is a costly affair and in a poll in 2017 more than half of Russians believe he should be buried. Although in the past Russians still came to pay their respects, it is now more of a quirky tourist attraction.

Behind the Lenin Mausoleum you will find the Necropolis wall where other Soviet leaders, including Stalin, are buried.

Necropolis wall at the Red Square in Moscow

The Kremlin is for most foreigners synonymous with the seat of power in Russia. However, the word kremlin means nothing more than a fortified complex. Historically, almost every important city in Russia had a kremlin with the city’s most important buildings.

The Kremlin is the oldest part of Moscow and dates back to the beginning of the 14th century when its fortification walls were built. It soon became the playground of Russia’s leaders. In the 15th century the Muscovite grand duke’s built several churches and in the 16th century it became the residence of the Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to Saint Petersburg.

The Kremlin was still used for coronation ceremonies though. The Tsars continued to develop the Kremlin with the construction of the Kremlin palace, the Kremlin Arsenal and the Kremlin Armoury.

As soon as the Soviets took over they moved the capital back to Moscow. Lenin and Stalin all had personal rooms in the Kremlin. The eagles on the Kremlin towers were replaced by red stars and the churches were closed. Luckily they were preserved as a museum and most treasures were moved to the Kremlin Armoury, although some were also sold overseas. The State Kremlin palace was an addition from Khrushchev who used it for communist party meetings.

Nowadays the Kremlin is partly open to the public. Because the Kremlin has the oldest and most beautiful churches in Moscow, it’s well worth paying the higher entrance fee that includes them. The interior frescoes of the Assumption cathedral, the Annunciation cathedral and the cathedral of the archangel are stunning. Other important buildings open to the public are the Ivan the great bell tower and the Kremlin Armoury.

Kremlin Moscow

Kremlin Armoury

Unfortunately if you want to see the Kremlin Armoury on the same day, as I describe in this 4 day Moscow itinerary, you might not have time to see it properly. The Armoury is huge with lots of interesting treasures including some of Fabergé’s easter eggs. If you have the time and want to see this museum it is better to spread this day out over two and focus on the red square on your first day and the Kremlin on the second day.

Cathedral of christ the saviour

If you leave the Kremlin at the Armoury and the Borovitskaya tower, it is only a 15 minute walk to the cathedral of Christ the Saviour . The second largest orthodox cathedral in the world. The original 19th century church was destroyed by Stalin during his anti religious campaigns. Reconstruction of the church started in 1995 and it reopened in all its glory in 2000.

The size and its interior decorations are for sure impressive, but I personally also felt it was all a bit too much. It certainly lacks the charm and authenticity of the Kremlin churches that I liked much more.

Dinner tip : It is not cheap, but treat yourself to excellent Siberian cuisine in restaurant Chemodan , a further 15 minute walk from the cathedral of christ the saviour. The menu includes curiosities like grilled altay yak meat and wild boar, elk, roe or beer meat with cloudberry sauce or pine cone sauce.

Moscow Itinerary Day 2: The metro and Tretyakov Gallery

The second day of this 4 day Moscow itinerary is great when the weather is not in your favour. Most of today’s activities are indoors and therefore perfect when it rains.

Moscow metro tour

We start the day with a Moscow metro tour. The Moscow Metro has some of the most beautiful metro stations in the world. It was an ambitious project from Stalin that envisioned a system that not only transported labourers from A to B in an efficient way, but that also reminded them of the Soviet ideology.

The metro stations were to become the palaces of the people with lofty ceilings, lots of marble, grand statues, mosaics and of course lots of Soviet symbols. The Moscow Metro was the first to be built successfully. While others in St Petersburg and Tashkent followed, none were as extravagant as the one in Moscow.

There are lots of pricey tours out there, but it is very easy to explore the Moscow Metro on your own with this free self guided Moscow Metro tour that will take you all morning

Lunch tip : Get out at metro station Tretyakovskaya near the Tretyakov gallery. For lunch you can find some cheap eats here. My personal favourite is Grabli . A self service buffet style cafe with excellent quality Russian and European food. It’s nice for vegetarians as well, because the salad section is great. Nearby Mu Mu is another good budget option and has the same concept, but focuses mostly on Russian food.

Moscow Metro

Tretyakov gallery

If it comes to the Arts, Moscow has lots to offer. Many travellers, Like me, have a hard time deciding whether to visit the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts or the Tretyakov gallery .

Pushkin has all the well established names like Rembrandt, Renoir and Botticelli, but mostly focuses on European fine Arts.

The Tretyakov gallery on the other hand is all about Russian art from ancient icons to medieval paintings and more recent works. I chose the Tretyakov gallery and I was very glad I did so. Not only does it offer a good overview of the history of Russian Art, but the exhibitions are excellent as well.

Dinner tip : For delicious Pelmeni dishes and other Russian food head to Varenichnaya no.1 that is close to the Tretyakov gallery (next to Mu Mu). This Soviet Retro style cafe is slightly more expensive than Moo moo and Grabli, but prices are still very reasonable for Moscow and the food is excellent. I went there several times and everything tasted great.

Russian art in the Tretyakov gallery

Night out : Bolshoi Theatre

For a perfect night out watch one of the excellent ballet or opera performances in the historic 18th century Bolshoi theatre. The architecture is as impressive as its performances.

Bolshoi theatre

Moscow Itinerary Day 3: Parks and monasteries

As we spent most of our times indoors on the second day of our Moscow itinerary, we will go outside on our third day in Moscow

Gorki park & park of forgotten statues

The Gorki Park opened in 1928 as the Central Park of Culture and Leisure and is one of the top attractions in Moscow. It has a scenic location next to the Moskva river and there are lots of trees and ponds. Locals still come here to exercise, walk, or use the free wi-fi. In winter, the ice skating rink is hugely popular.

Personally I thought it was just another park and I was more intrigued by the park of forgotten statues ( Muzeon park ) opposite of the main entrance to Gorky Park. Huge statues of Lenin, Stalin and Brezhnev, that Moscow wasn’t sure what to do with after the collapse of the Soviet Union, were all gathered here. It then opened as Muzeon, an open air museum of sculpture.

Lunch tip : Gorki park has lots of eateries. Although you will pay a bit more for its location, especially if you want to overlook a pond or the Moskva river. However, there are some budget street food options as well.

Novodevichy convent and cemetery

The 16th century Novodevichy Convent was an important monastery with strong links to Moscow’s Kremlin. Among its visitors were the Tsars and their families. It’s a peaceful spot located next to a lake that was the inspiration for Tchaikovski’s Swan lake.

This might sound strange, but the nearby Novodevichy cemetery is a popular tourist attraction that is part of many tour groups itineraries, because of the amount of famous Russians that are buried there including Kruschev, Yeltsin and Stalin’s wife. It’s a fascinating place and some of the graves are pretty impressive with their statues.

Moscow State University and Sparrow hills

The sparrow hills, or Vorobyovy Gory, was one of my favourite places in Moscow. It is also one of the highest and therefore offers great views over the city. Equally impressive is the huge Stalinist building of the Moscow State University behind you. It’s a great place for an afternoon stroll as it has a huge forest park with ponds and bike paths popular among students.

You can’t visit the Moscow State University inside, but it is definitely worth walking around it to see its architecture. It is one of Stalin’s seven sisters, part of a plan to build seven skyscrapers in Stalinist style in Moscow. The other sisters are throughout Moscow and look rather similar, but the Moscow State University is the tallest and largest. There is also a cable car that goes over the Moskva river offering more nice views.

Moscow Itinerary Day 4: Quirky Moscow

On our fourth day of our Moscow itinerary it is time to see some of the city’s quirky attractions.

Novospassky klooster

The Novospassky monastery sees few foreign visitors, but it is one of the oldest monasteries in Moscow and is just as beautiful as the more popular Novodevichy convent. The main cathedral has some really beautiful frescoes from the 17th century. It is also the monastery where the very first Romanovs were buried.

Novospassky monastery in Moscow

Izmailovo Kremlin and Vernisazh

I already mentioned that the word kremlin means nothing more than citadel or fortress. Russia’s kremlins are often full of history with ancient churches and government buildings, but not the Izmailovo Kremlin . This Kremlin has nothing to do with history and is a very new addition to Moscow’s tourist attractions.

The Izmailovo Krenlin is some kind of Russian Disneyland or as they call it themselves, a center of culture and entertainment. It was built in 2007 and is supposed to represent old Russian architecture. The result is an eclectic mix with wooden churches, white walls, bell towers and colourful spires.

The amusement park is home to a wedding palace and several forgettable museums such as the vodka history museum, the museum of russian dresses, the museum of Russian fairy tales and the museum of Russian toys.

Nearby you will also find the Izmailovo market or Vernisazh. This market includes handicrafts, antiquities and lots of souvenirs. It’s the best place to buy them, but bargaining is a must. There is a flea market as well where you might find some interesting Soviet memorabilia.

VDNKH is another Disneyland- like attraction in Moscow, but then a Soviet Version. This huge open air complex was built in 1935 and its name translates as the exhibition centre of the Achievements of the National Economy.

It has a huge park with lots of fountains and a number of pavilions representing the different Soviet Socialist republics such as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan as well as different fields of industry such as engineering, space and Atomic energy.

Nowadays it is more like an open air amusement park popular with families with kids. It is also still the place for many exhibitions and events. You can check the VDNKH website to see if there is anything that you might fancy.

Night out: Sanduny baths

For a true Russian experience you should visit a Russian banya at least once. In Russia going to a bathhouse to steam it out in a sauna is not only to get clean, but is also a social event. Most have female and male departments as well as private rooms.

The oldest and most beautiful bathhouse is Sanduny . With its 19th century historic and lavish interiors it is a visual stunner. The architecture alone makes this one of the top attractions in Moscow. Unfortunately it doesn’t come cheap. Just so you know, there are lots of banya in Moscow in a variety of price classes.

More than 4 days in Moscow

Do you have more than 4 days in Moscow? Lucky you, and there is no need to be worried that you might get bored. Besides the things to do in this 4 day Moscow itinerary there are lots of other activities.

Arbat is one of the oldest and most famous streets in Russia. This one kilometer pedestrian street is lined with historic buildings with beautiful architecture. It’s near the Kremlin and a great place to go for a stroll.

Pushkin museum

The Pushkin State museum of fine Arts has some of the largest collections of European Arts. It is an excellent museum and a must for those who love art.

Park pobedy

Park Pobedi was constructed in honour of the victory of the Soviet Union in the Great Patriotic War. It’s a vast green space in Moscow with several monuments. You can’t miss the high obelisk with an eternal flame in front, but throughout the park are old Soviet tanks and warplanes. It’s metro station is the deepest metro station in Moscow.

Park Pobedy Moscow

Gulag history museum

There are very few places in Moscow that shed a light on Stalin’s repression. It’s a controversial subject that most Russians rather not talk about. This makes the Gulag history museum a must visit in Moscow.

It was established by a historian who himself was once a prisoner in Stalin’s gulag camps. The exhibitions are excellent and very moving.

Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoye was once the royal estate of the grand princes of Muscovy as early as the 14th century. With its scenic location overlooking the Moskva river it is no surprise that they chose this place.

Nowadays it is only a few kilometers south of Moscow and a great escape from the city. The churches and buildings that have survived are mostly from the 16th and 17th century and some are on the UNESCO World Heritage list

Sergiev posad

A bit further from Moscow lies Sergiev Posad. It is often called the Russian Vatican, because it is one of the most important religious centers in the Russian orthodox church.

The monastery was established in the 14th century by Saint Sergius of Radonezh and it remains one of the biggest monasteries in Russia. The complex has a number of ancient churches and cathedrals with beautiful frescoes and icons.

It makes a perfect day trip from Moscow by train. You can read my day trip guide on how to get from Moscow to Sergiev Posad .

Sergiev Posad monastery

Russia’s golden ring

Sergiev Posad is part of the so-called Golden Ring of Russia. A number of picturesque historic cities around Moscow that played a big role in the development of the Russian orthodox church. Most of them are on the UNESCO world heritage list because of their ancient churches, cathedrals and kremlins.

Moscow is a great base to explore the Golden Ring by making several day trips into the countryside, but some of these cities like Yaroslavl, Vladimir and Suzdal are a destination in itself. Read everything about this area in my post about backpacking the Golden ring of Russia .
