Things To Do

Entertainment, entertainment | eight things i learned during my ‘chicago fire’ set visit.

Taylor Kinney in NBC's "Chicago Fire," one of the major TV productions that currently film in Chicago.

If both series last even half as long as fellow Dick Wolf-produced drama “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” (now in its 16th season), they really should consider making a similar tour open to the public. For now, I give you a “Chicago Fire”-focused glimpse of the tour: Here are the eight things I learned during my set visit:

1. Firehouse 51 has become a tourist attraction: Fans of “Chicago Fire” want to see the fictional Firehouse 51 from the show, which is actually real-life fire station Engine 18 on the Near West side. Chicago Fire Department Deputy District Chief Steve Chikerotis serves as a consultant on “Chicago Fire” and estimates the show films there 22 times a year. “We have people come from all over the world” on weekends, Chikerotis said. “We might have 200-300 people that are here. … I’ve seen a big increase in the number of tourists coming around.”

2. The most common complaint firefighters have about “Chicago Fire” is the smoke — or lack thereof: “Our world that we work in, we have 1,300-degree temperatures at the ceiling, every fire we go to,” Chikerotis said. “But we also have zero visibility, which would make for great radio, but not television. I think (firefighters) get it, that (‘Chicago Fire’) can’t show the blackness of reality on a television show.”

3. Star Taylor Kinney claimed he isn’t sure if girlfriend Lady Gaga will make a “Chicago Fire” cameo any time soon: “I wouldn’t know, you’d have to ask her,” said Kinney. Last year Wolf told a Los Angeles morning show that he’d like to see Gaga appear on the show. Would Kinney like to see it happen as well? “I wouldn’t mind, no.”

4. Kinney filmed a movie with Bill Murray over the summer: “It’s called ‘Rock the Kasbah,'” Kinney said. “We filmed it in Morocco. … The first day of work there, I had a scene where (Murray) is dressed in drag. My character walks in and sees him and we just started ad-libbing. I had a tough time keeping it together without laughing.”

5. A “Chicago Fire”/”Chicago PD”/”Law & Order: SVU” crossover stoyline will air Nov. 11 and 12: “It’ll be our seventh episode on all three shows,” said “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago PD” co-creator Michael Brandt. “Something happens on ‘Chicago Fire.’ The ‘Chicago PD’ unit is brought in to investigate. That happens on Tuesday night on ‘Fire.’ On Wednesday on ‘SVU,’ (Sergeant Hank) Voight and intelligence go to New York and work with (Detective Olivia) Benson and everybody on ‘SVU,’ which then leads them back to Chicago for the last hour on Wednesday night (on ‘PD’). Benson and SVU come to Chicago and she and Voight have some great scenes together (on ‘Chicago PD.’)”

6. The cast rides motorcycles around Chicago: “As often as I can, I put my helmet on so nobody knows it’s me, and I ride about the city,” said Eamonn Walker, who plays Chief Wallace Boden. “Taylor and I do it. Recently, Monica (Raymund) bought herself a bike. We’ve got our own little biker gang.”

7. The extras who play firefighters are actual firefighters: I know TV shows prefer to cast the real thing as extras, but I didn’t realize this went for every firefighter extra. “They bring their own gear,” Brandt said. “They do hoses. … We do everything we can to include them.”

8. The sliding pole is believed to have originated in Chicago: Chikerotis said it was a Chicago firefighter who invented the sliding pole (Captain David Kenyon in 1878, according to the City of Chicago’s website) to “get a faster push out from the bunkroom.” “Chicago Fire” producers wanted a sliding pole in the series, despite the fact Engine 18 is a one-story building. They made it seem like Firehouse 51 was two stories in the series premiere and showed cast member Charlie Barnett sliding into the scene. Producers decided to make Firehouse 51 one story after that. “Now the pole is there kind of as a novelty item,” Chikerotis said.

Are fans of the show allowed to attend filming locations ?

visit chicago fire set

Hi, I believe fans are allowed to be there. Some shows don't allow it but I think this show does. Go to On Location Vacations to see day by day filming locations and try to go out there.

Everytime I hear about filming of the series i miss out all the time

So happy I live in Chicago!!! I'm definetly going to a filming!

Any idea where they film scenes from Molly's? Great sight!!

http://lottiespub.com/

The interiors were originally filmed at Lotti's, but they recreated it at the West Side studio, because one scene was involved setting the bar on fire.

what police station do they film at when showing the police?

The old CPD 12th district station, Racine and Monroe.

What building was the old 12th at? Or i should say used

The Fire house is two blocks south of Roosevelt Rd. on Blue Island Ave. and very close to The University of Illinois at Chicago campus.

That's the the fire station where my brother is working for.

I like the show Chicago Fire. Is there any way that the music could be toned down so the script can be heard /understood? Without knowing the story what good is tuning in to the show?

Hello, I am not sure how to help you. I am not part of the production of the show. Maybe change your tv to mono instead of stereo that may help. I agree that a lot of movies and television shows don't have consistent audio because of surround sound.

Do they film at a running fire station? Like is this fire station up and running or is it shut down?

Hello, yes it is a working fire station. The real firemen that are there were very nice to me when I stopped by and took my pictures. I did that very early in the series so not sure how receptive they are these days since the popularity is taking off.

Place was completely empty yesterday.

I have to agree with everything in this post. Thanks for the useful information. fire

Girls wkd in Chicago for 4 Texas girls coming up in December. I think we will be stopping by! I hope they don't mind!

Is the house they film Chicago Fire a really house and if so were is it

I pass by there everyday when I come home from work. I live so close, I see them filming all the time. Their first show ever was filmed at my job. :D

They don't allow visitors during filming anymore.

Does anyone know if they are filming in Chicago this week and when and location?

Are they still filming the current season?

Yes. Probably until April

I heard that they didn't want to film in Chicago anymore because of our weather. Is there any truth to them moving out of Chicago?

Hi, I have not heard anything like that happening. If they really are not happy with the weather they can film earlier in the season and make up for lost time. The studio is getting more popular all the time so I doubt they are going to leave.

Nope not true as NBC has said this " the series will continue to be filmed there."

Actually, NBC said,"We will soon be moving to New York after this season is over, for our new show, New York Fire Department "

When they are not filming at the fire house they are at a stag do you know the address for that?

Do you know the time frame of when they film their season? so for example from April to October. I want to visit there and try and get there when they are actually filming the show.

Ive heard of people sending gifts to the set of shows, like Mark Harmon, ncis, gets a lot of usmc stuff from fans. Can we send to the CF set?

Movies have been the source of entertainment from time unmemorable. These days we consider watching movies as a family bonding time.

HI, I have a question. Are the trucks in serial the same as in real ? I ask because I see here http://chicagoareafire.com/Div_9_D1_B3_18.html that Fire Brigade/ Batalion 4th from Firehouse wherein series is filmed don't own either Engine 51 (but Engine 18) or Truck 81 (they have not it) or Ambulance 61 (but Ambulance 84) or Battalion car same as in TV series. So i would ask you where are the trucks ? Are they old trucks not being in use ? I can't understand how the episodes are filmed because in this firehouse 24/7 some live in the building, firefighters normally work so where are real trucks when the scenes are filming ? I know that some question are strange but it interests me. Thank you in advance for your answers Cheers Michal

Hi thanks for the question. I am really not sure on that answer. When I was there taking pictures early on in the series I noticed there were alternate trucks inside. The second time they had the tv fire trucks in the garage.

The city closes the station for filming so while the crew is filming they don't have to worry about that problem.

IS CHICAGO FIRE FILMING ANYWHERE THIS WEEK AROUND TOWN, WHERE CAN I FIND CHICAGO FIRE SOUVENIRS

No they are done until August.

We watched them film a driving scene in Waukegan. It was pretty cool. I'm not the type who sees actors as anything "special", but my Best Friend enjoys it, so we went. There was a very small group of us just hanging back, mostly talk nerd about all our different DSLR's. We were near their "snack tent" and David Eigenberg came over whilst eating a donut, shook everyone's hand, took photos with us and was down right the nicest guy I have ever met. When he asked how I was doing, I literally felt like he wanted to know how I was doing - "Oh, but he is an actor!", my realist side reminds me. I have met several celebs, and most a were exactly as I expected, this gentleman was not.

We are the active firehouse where Chicago Fire is filmed. Many of the questions asked here can be answered by going to our Facebook page Engine18ChicagoFire. We do allow visitors to tour the firehouse on days the show isn't filming. When filming we run the rigs out of a temp garage behind the firehouse. We also have great Chicago Fire show gear available.

We also have a website. Engine18ChicagoFire.com

That is awesome! I am so glad I found this site! I am planning a trip at the beginning of August and we were hoping to check it out! 3 of us are coming form Ontario, Canada & 1 friend is from Michigan!

Hi im coming to Chicago in Early Oct from Australia and im a massive fan of the show. If I come to your house could I see inside and get some pics for my 3 boys that absolutely love your show!! they beg me to stay up late just so they can watch it :) thanks Christy Jasperson [email protected]

We're planning on coming to Chicago July 29th thru Aug 8th....Does anyone know if there will be any filming these days and where it might be?

Hi, the answer is there should be filming as they start back tomorrow. The where part is a different story. Keep an eye on the On Location Vacations site for locations the day of each day.

They're filming on May Street off Taylor July 30 around 4pm. Source? I live there. There's fliers up everywhere

Where are the filming locations for the next 3 days. In Chicago

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I never know the locations in advance. Try checking out the On Locations Vacations site.

Any news on the locations for the this week or next? I am in Chicago, and I would love to see something of Chicago Fire :)

I will be in Chicago October 5-11 will they be filming at that time? If yes then where?

Hi, keep an eye on the website Onlocationvacations.com to see if they list something. I have no upfront knowledge on where something will be filmed. I just watch the episode and then go find the locations.

What junkyard was the 10/14 show filmed at?

Hi I will add that episode page later today but for now it was Again Auto Parts 1300 N. Kostner. I have not confirmed it yet but I think that is the place.

What was the most dangrous job you guys did

Where did they have the crah with truck 51 and truck 61

lived in the neighborhood when this was filming crazy to see it

one day i hope i can come down there and see the tv show filming. i never been on a set. what are the norm time of the year when they are shooting? does anyone know? im from new jersey and i would love too come down there for a bref time and see them film. i never been on a set i love this show and the pd show ima fire fighter out my ways in new jersey i hope you can give me info on that. if you would like email me and let me know thanks my email is [email protected] and in the subject put chicago fire if you dont mind so i know if not a skam or what ever thank you for your time. brian one of the biggest fans ever!!!!!!

is it possible to get a tour of the station at all and if so how do we get one?

Yes you can. Be polite and respectful toward the firehouse and it will allow for others to tour it. It would not be a formal tour but they will show you around.

I'm from Germany and I will be in Chicago from June 10th to 18th this year. Do anybody know if they still filming at this time? Or will CF end after season 3?

There will be a new season for the show but filming usually starts up again in July. So you will miss out I am sorry to say.

I will be in Chicago at the end of March this year - so I guess no filming as well? But it is allowed to visit Engine 18, right?

They should still be filming then.

Thanks for your reply. So I wíll keep my eyes open!

Hello - My boyfriend is a volunteer Firefighter in Wisconsin. I'd love to take a weekend trip and visit station 51. Can we just show up at the fire station and ask for a tour? Is there a number we can call or email address to contact? What do you suggest?

You can show up any time. Bring a gift if you want. If there is no filming you can get a nice tour.

Can we send a letter for the cast and they will read it? If yes which adress?

Did you know that the building used in the show as the firehouse is the real home of Chicago FD's Engine 18, located at 1360 S. Blue Island Avenue at Maxwell Street, between 13th & Racine. Housed here is ALS Engine 18, 2-2-1 (Deputy District Chief - 1st District), 4-5-7 (Paramedic Field Chief - EMS District 7), 6-4-16 (High-Rise Response Unit), and BLS Ambulance 84.

Did you know CFD firefighters featured as extras during scenes in the firehouse and real places in the city were often referenced in the characters' dialog. And did you know this Chicago artist and retired firefighter Lee J. Kowalski's oil paintings of fire scenes can be spotted in several episodes.

so apperently sometimes in the background you can see some real firefighters that work there.

Anything filing the first 2 weeks of April?

Also, is mollys really?

We noticed a lot of questions about tours at Engine 18 aka Station 51. We welcome visitors. Best times are between 9-11 am and 1-3 pm. We offer Station/show gear at firehouse or on our site http://shop.engine18chicagofire.com Please visit and like our Facebook page. /Engine18ChicagoFire. Any questions feel free to email us at [email protected]

Do all the cast live near the area?

Are they filming in Chicago at all this coming weekend?

We're from South Africa and will be visiting Chicago in May, will they be filming and how do we go about visiting the firehouse?

Hi, sorry to say the filming will be over for the season. Usually back in mid July. The firehouse is available for visits.

I'm a medic from Michigan and I will be coming to Chicago for the first time as a mother's day present from my husband, with my mom and sister! I went be able to contain myself from stopping and taking pictures!

Have a fun time and I hope you have nice weather. Enjoy

Going to Chicago in July for a family reunion. Seeing the firehouse is definitely on my list of things to do. Can't wait!

Looks like Engine 18's house.

Hi, love the show. We are coming up to Chicago July 24th,are they filming up there, or do you do are there any movies being fimed when we are up there?

My friends and I will be coming to Chicago in Sept or Oct 2015 will CF still be filming?

Hello, I work at a church in the city of Chicago. We have a property that we are no longer using and looking at tearing it down. Before we do that we were wondering if maybe you would like to use it in one of your filming shoots. Please let me know who I should contact to give details about the property and what not. Let me know as soon as you can please.

Hi, I have nothing to do with the production of the show. I just watch the episodes and find the filming locations and post where they are. Go to Twitter and follow "Filming In Chicago". See if the may get your message to a person from the location department. Good luck.

we are going to b there tomorrow. will they be filming?

Filming is going on, now and tomorrow( my Neighborhood) at 4049 W 21st Place & karlov , big street Are Cermak and Pulaski

Hi! Going to be visiting Chicago on Nov 20-21 and would love to stop in and see the station. My brother is a firefighter and collects tshirts from various stations, do you have any onsite to sell? Do you know of any filming going on those days? Thanks so much!!

i am a massive fan of cf and hope to live there one day, cf has inspired me to be a firefighter want to meet the cast one day

I'm a cop from England and over here there's a pretty big rivalry between police and firefighters! even so I've been hooked on Chicago fire it's an awesome show, would be pretty cool to take a look around the fire house someday and see how it's done across the water. Thanks

Last year we ran across a taping of Chicago fire by accident. Now I am bringing another group of foreign exchange students this year and I am wondering if there are any taping happening April 15th or 16th?

If we want to write to the cast how do we find an address to write to?

Will be in town March 10 and 11? Are they still filming at this time?

Yes they should be.

can a guy go to the made up set and watch filming? do they film at firehouse 51 on Saturdays?

When can we find out the filming schedule for the fall 2016 season?

will there be filming in November 2016 coming from Australia would love to see this ?

Any 2016 schedules yet?

I went to Chicago a few months ago saw the firehouse no one was there maybe they were fighting a fire i don't know my brother in law is a huge fan of the show was gonna grab him a tee shirt

THIS IS PAUL WEBBER 1 312 824 8971

If there is going to be filming in your neighborhood, the city will post signs banning parking. I don't remember if they state which show. I've seen them posted twice around the corner from my house, they were for two of the Fire and PD. I even had a notice posted on my front door to call some Illinois department if I was interested in them using it for one of these shows, but I never followed up,because my handicapped sister was living on the first floor.

Anyone would have any guess where kellys jacket black looking like leather , with two zippers in front is from, what company? From season 9 episode 6, when he was talking to stella, in the house , when they got into a fight

Where is Chicago Fire season 10 filming location for the rest of the weeks?

Hello there fromm ny.My husband and I were volunteer firefighters in our town.We had to step down due to health issues.I like to take a bucket list trip this year and stop. What months do they film, love to see the firehouse and hopefully some filming.Thank you so much also would like to buy some shirts.

The firefighters of Chicago Fire run through burning buildings and perform daring rescues nearly every day, so they desperately need a place to unwind.

Thankfully, they have Molly's, the local bar owned by Herrmann, Dawson and Otis, which is based on the real-life longtime Chicago watering hole Lottie's.

Our favorite TV and movie bars

In this TVGuide.com video, star David Eigenberg gives viewers an all-access tour of Molly's and even stirs up some mischief in the process. So how does Molly's compare to the real Lottie's? Whose artwork is hanging on the wall of Molly's? And which member of the Chicago Fire team is Molly's fake beer named after? Pull up a chair, grab a cold one and check out Eigenberg's tour below:

Here Are All of the 'Chicago Fire' Shooting Locations That You Can Visit in Real Life

Pretty Honore - Author

Mar. 18 2021, Updated 4:09 p.m. ET

As we watch the men and women of Chicago Fire run in and out of buildings to save vulnerable people and pets, we can’t help but feel personally attached.

After a few weddings and a funeral, the cast pretty much feels like family, and some fans want to know exactly where our extended cousins live. So, where is Chicago Fire filmed?

Where is ‘Chicago Fire’ filmed?

Every series in NBC’s One Chicago Universe is filmed in Chicago at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios, where shows like Shameless , Empire , and The Chi are also shot. Firehouse 51, on the other hand, is an actual firehouse in Chicago that you can visit seasonally.

While most indoor scenes are shot on set, fans have been able to catch a glimpse of Chicago Fire cast members filming outside.

Since the full-time firehouse transitioned into a part-time set, it has racked up a number of positive reviews, even earning five stars on Google. One fan wrote, “The firemen of Firehouse 51 were amazing today. I only went there to get a few pictures from the outside, not hoping for more. They saw us there and invited us inside.”

“They were welcoming and showed us the truck, the garage, the common room. Amazing for me being a huge fan of the Chicago Fire show! Thank you again to the amazing fireman who spent most of our time there with us, showed us the props, etc. Really appreciate it,” the user concluded.

Guests, who are asked to watch filming from a distance, agree that the experience is well worth the trip. One tourist commented on TripAdvisor, “We were able to watch some filming being done with the show C hicago Fire. ”

The commenter added, “We are huge fans and we were so excited to see some of the actors. They do block off the streets while filming, but the guy directing was so nice. He told us where we could stand and watch.”

In Chicago Fire , we also see cast members visit the Chicago Fire Academy, which is really an empty building on West De Koven Street that serves as a national landmark. In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire started at this very location — a historical fact that we’re sure showrunners were totally aware of. The ground floor of this landmark is also open to visitors.

Last on our Chicago Fire tour is Molly’s Pub, which in actuality, is Lottie’s Pub. Showrunners shot a number of Season 1 episodes in the bar, which is nestled in Bucktown, but recreated the vibe with a replica in later seasons. While you may not see the cast of Chicago Fire hanging out here in real life, you can visit and pick up some exclusive Chicago Fire merch.

Reports state that Chicago Fire has also used the University of Illinois at Chicago as a filming location, much like Chicago Med and Chicago P.D.

You can watch new episodes of Chicago Fire Wednesdays on NBC at 9 p.m. ET.

The Big Picture

  • Jesse Spencer will be making a cameo return as Matt Casey in Chicago Fire 's twelfth season.
  • The cast members are seen dressed in their finest clothes, hinting at a celebration at Molly's bar.
  • Several cast members, including Joe Minoso and David Eigenberg, were captured in behind-the-scenes Instagram photos.

The gang’s getting together to kick back a few pints at Molly’s - Firehouse 51’s favorite place to blow off steam in Chicago Fire - and one face, in particular, is really catching our eye. Thanks to the Instagram account for Lottie’s Pub (the location that serves as the set for Molly’s), we’re getting a behind-the-scenes look at not only some cast members we’ve already seen so far on the show’s current twelfth season but also one who parted ways back in Season 10. That’s right, Jesse Spencer will officially be making his return as Matt Casey in - at the very least - a cameo capacity.

It’s hard to tell what exactly is taking place inside the stone walls of the neon-lit bar, but the crew is dressed in their finest clothes, signaling that they’re meeting there outside of work to celebrate a big occasion. This would give the creative team the perfect excuse to slip Spencer’s character back in around his ex-co-workers as he’s already returned a handful of times since taking his official exit two seasons back. Of course, we’re hoping that it’s an engagement party as the final episode of Season 11 saw Matt finally proposing to his on-again-off-again girlfriend, Sylvie Brett ( Kara Kilmer ). Since she accepted, a party is in order, and where better to have it than at Molly’s? On the other hand, we know that Kilmer will be stepping down from her role on the series following Season 12 , so could it be a congratulations AND goodbye party all rolled into one? Maybe!

Along with a solo shot of Spencer and the crew working hard putting up the temporary “Molly’s” awning, the Instagram images also capture several of the other cast members from NBC’s hit drama. Included in the shots are Joe Minoso ’s Joe Cruz and David Eigenberg ’s Christopher Herrmann. After more than a decade on the procedural series, both men are still bringing the heat week after week, and we can’t wait to see why they headed to Molly’s in their suit jackets.

A Season of Change

While Spencer may be popping in for a quick (or prolonged) hello, other members of Chicago Fire will be tapping out after this year. Along with Kilmer, Alberto Rosende has also clocked out for the last time , leaving his position as paramedic Blake Gallo after a four-season run during the Season 12 premiere episode. Giving fans a spurt of hope and joy, the silver lining to these departures was the news that Taylor Kinney, who plays Kelly Severide was not only returning after his Season 11 leave of absence but may even land his own spin-off if things go as well as expected.

You can check out the behind-the-scenes Chicago Fire Instagram post below and get caught up on the few Season 12 episodes that are already out - or read up on it all in our nifty guide here.

Did Lady Gaga Ever Visit The Chicago Fire Set?

Lady Gaga at an event

The first to kick off Dick Wolf's illustrious "Chicago One" universe, NBC's "Chicago Fire" is one of many successful procedurals. The series was followed shortly after by the spinoffs "Chicago P.D." and "Chicago Med," and "Chicago Fire" continues to grab fans well into Season 10 . Viewers gravitate towards fan-favorite characters, including firefighter Kelly Severide, played by Taylor Kinney. Severide has been a familiar face at Chicago Firehouse 51 since Season 1.

While Kinney's acting credits are extensive, with over 200 episodes of just "Chicago Fire," the actor also has another claim to fame. During the early years of filming the popular NBC show, Kinney was dating and eventually became engaged to world famous pop star Lady Gaga (via InStyle ). During their time together, Gaga frequently celebrated her connection to Kinney on social media, even posting her support in one tweet from 2012, promoting the airing of "Chicago Fire," which was a new show at the time.

Gaga has an immense fanbase and busy schedule herself, but did her support extend to visiting the "Chicago Fire" set in person?

Taylor Kinney said that Gaga supported him on set

By all accounts, Gaga's support was immeasurable. In an interview with Extra 's Renee Bargh from 2012, Kinney reported that Gaga has seen him work. "Yeah, she's been to set, it's been great," Kinney smiled. He went on to expand on what made her presence so important. He complimented her, saying that he appreciated "having someone in your corner and someone who believes in you." While the two seemed very happy together at the time, the public eventually learned that their relationship had ended, breaking off a marriage engagement, which Gaga revealed on her Instagram in 2016.

Touched on in Gaga's Netflix documentary "Gaga: Five Foot Two" in 2017, her relationship with Kinney didn't work out for unknown reasons (via Cosmopolitan ). Gaga explains many of her trials in the documentary. In addition to healing from the breakup, Gaga also deals with her chronic pain disorder, fibromyalgia. Despite the couple's obstacles, Kinney still attempts to show her support by sending her flowers before her half-time performance at the Super Bowl. Though he is not pictured in the documentary, the former relationship is still clearly a significant factor in Gaga's life, at least at the time of filming.

  • Chicago Fire Season 13: Further News & Info
  • Chicago Fire season 13 has been confirmed by NBC.
  • The cast for season 13 is expected to include familiar faces and fewer shakeups.
  • The story of season 13 will depend on unresolved threads from season 12 and will feature new city-wide emergencies.

Chicago Fire launched the wildly successful One Chicago franchise for NBC, and has now been renewed for a thirteenth season. Debuting in 2012, the series follows the firefighters and paramedics of the fictional Firehouse 51 in Chicago, responding to some of the most dangerous emergencies that rock the city. Like many of the best procedurals, Chicago Fire shines because it is as much about the harrowing adventure as it is about the complicated personal lives of the characters.

Naturally, Chicago Fire 's immediate success led NBC to launch a myriad of spinoffs set in the same universe, and TV maven Dick Wolf eventually came on board to helm the entire One Chicago franchise. Despite its rapid expansion, Chicago Fire has remained true to form and continues to deliver gripping drama season after season. While season 12 was delayed due to the Hollywood strikes of 2023, nothing has dulled the popularity of the series or franchise, and the flagship series shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Chicago Fire's Casey & Brett Replacement Can Be So Much Better Thanks To 1 Big Difference

Chicago Fire lost one of its best romantic pairings when Brett and Casey got married. Luckily, its replacement has the potential to be better.

A Main Cast Member Is Promoted

As the upcoming season begins to take shape, the latest news confirms that Chicago Fire season 13 has found its Sylvie Brett replacement . The departure of Kara Killmer's Sylvie Brett was a big blow during season 12, but a new paramedic was added as a temporary floater in the form of Jocelyn Hudon's Lyla Novak. In the wake of season 12's other major shifts, it has been revealed that Hudon will return to Chicago Fire season 13 on a permanent basis, and has been upgraded to recurring status.

Chicago Fire Will Return

Chicago Fire has been renewed, and a thirteenth season is on the way. While no further details have been released about the upcoming season of the show, it is likely that it will return to pre-pandemic length, with another 22-24 episodes . While season 12 was only 13 episodes long, and aired between January and May, most previous seasons are 20+, and run from Fall through to Spring. However, nothing official has been confirmed yet in terms of episode count or release window.

Chicago Fire season 12 concluded on May 22, 2024.

A Lot Of Changes Before Season 13

While a full cast list is still elusive, it isn't difficult to speculate about who will reprise their roles in season 13. Shows like Chicago Fire have pretty consistent ensembles, but the tumultous changes that happened before season 12 are repeating for season 13 as well. Despite that, fans can expect to see a lot of familiar faces, including Taylor Kinney's Severide, who made his big return in season 12. Though he only joined the show at the beginning of season 12, Rome Flynn won't return as Derrick Gibson in season 13.

Two other major departures rocked season 12, though one was much more expected than the other. First, Kara Killmer departed the series after 10 seasons as Sylvie Brett, and the season concluded with the resignation of District Chief Wallace Boden played by Eamonn Walker. Though a replacement for Boden hasn't been found yet, it has been confirmed that Jocelyn Hudon's paramedic Lyla Novak will be upgraded as a recurring character to fill the void left by Brett's departure.

The presumptive cast of Chicago Fire season 13 will likely include:

Where Will Season 13 Take The Crew?

The story of Chicago Fire season 13 is probably going to be shaped by the conclusion of season 12 which saw Boden retire from his role as Chief and even tap a successor in the form of Christopher Hermann. However, it has been revealed that the Chief will be a new character tentatively named Dom Pascal, hinting that the changing of the guard could be tumultuous. While predicting the overarching storyline is impossible at this juncture, it is guaranteed that season 13 will see a whole new slate of city-wide emergencies that test the limits of the Firehouse 51 team .

Chicago Fire season 13 begins production soon (Plus, everything we know so far about the new season!)

W e’re now a month into the One Chicago shows’ annual summer hiatus, but with July’s arrival, we’re inching one step closer to the new season arriving on our screens this fall!

Although we won’t have Chicago Fire back with new episodes until likely September, NBC will soon be beginning work on the new season of the show. After last year’s strike-related delays, NBC is looking to return to a normal production timeline for the 2024-25 TV season which means the One Chicago shows will begin production mid-summer once again.

According to our friends over at Screen Magazine , Chicago Fire season 13 will begin filming in the Chicago area on July 19 as NBC begins prepping episodes for the fall season. July has typically been when the One Chicago shows begin production and with the shows finally able to settle back into their normal routines, fans can rest assured that they won’t have to wait as long between seasons this year.

Chicago Fire season 13 will premiere this fall on Wednesday nights

While we had to wait until January for season 12, Chicago Fire will finally be back to a normal premiere timeline in the fall following the strikes. Although NBC has not set an official premiere date just yet for season 13, we do know that the show will return in the fall with One Chicago Wednesdays remaining a staple on the network.

If we had to guess, it seems likely that Chicago Fire season 13 will premiere on either Wednesday, September 18, or Wednesday, September 25. Most seasons of the show have typically premiered within the last two weeks of September, so it seems highly likely NBC will look to kick off its Fall 2024 schedule within this same range of time as there is no reason for the network to delay the One Chicago shows’ returns and we simply don’t imagine them doing so.

Season 13 will be a longer season than season 12

An exact episode count for the next season of Chicago Fire has not yet been announced, but we know the season will be longer than season 12 which consisted of just 13 episodes. Season 12 was the shortest season of Chicago Fire in the history of the show due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes of 2023.

With production able to begin in July, the shows will be able to get back to a more standard-length season which means the next season of Chicago Fire should be 20-22 episodes. This also means that we’ll get to see the show dropping new episodes across the fall and into the spring of 2025 up until May when the finale is likely to air.

The Chicago Fire season 13 cast will look a bit different

When Chicago Fire does return for season 13, the cast will look a little different thanks to the many cast exits that came about in season 12.

Across the last season of the show, Chicago Fire said goodbye to both long-time members of the cast as well as new additions who left the show just as quickly as they arrived. Among the actors we said goodbye to in season 12 were Kara Killmer (Brett), Alberto Rosende (Gallo), Rome Flynn (Gibson), and Wesam Keesh (Lennox). It’s also not expected that we’ll see much of Laura Allen as Chief Robinson next season as her story on the show seems to have reached a natural end.

Season 13 will also be the first season in which Eamonn Walker will not be a series regular on the cast after 12 seasons. The good news is that, while we won’t see Boden in every episode, Walker is expected to return in a recurring role next season which means we should still get to see Boden in a few episodes across the season, the question will just be the exact number of episodes he’ll appear in.

Additional cast exits could be coming in season 13, but at the moment, we’re expecting the rest of the core cast will be coming back for season 13 with the following actors all expected back next season:

  • Taylor Kinney as Kelly Severide
  • David Eigenberg as Christopher Herrmann
  • Joe Minoso as Joe Cruz
  • Miranda Rae Mayo as Stella Kidd
  • Daniel Kyri as Darren Ritter
  • Christian Stolte as Mouch
  • Hanako Greensmith as Violet Mikami
  • Randy Flagler as Capp
  • Anthony Ferraris as Tony
  • Jake Lockett as Sam Carver

It was teased that Carver could be leaving the show; however, Jake Lockett has hinted he'll be back so we'd be shocked if Carver left the show unexpectedly. We also know that Jocelyn Hudon will be returning for season 13 as a series regular, meaning Lyla Novak will be sticking around at 51 and that the show might have found its permanent replacement for Brett!

The last key member of the cast we're expecting back for season 13 is Michael Bradway who joined the cast in season 12 as Jack Damon. While we don't yet know whether Bradway will return as a series regular or remain in a recurring status, we expect Damon to play a major role in the season given the bombshell he dropped on Severide in the finale.

51 is getting a new Chief

At the end of Chicago Fire season 12, it was hinted that Herrmann was going to become the next Chief at 51; however, it seems that will not be the case after all.

According to Deadline , NBC is currently in the process of casting the role of Chief Dom Pascal for season 13. Pascal will take over the role of Chief at 51 following Boden’s promotion and it’s going to be interesting to see who they cast in the role.

While little is known about the character at this time, it has been revealed that Pascal, “began his career with the CFD but spent the last decade as a chief in Sunny Miami. Dom is described as a cheerful person who works well under pressure, and whose leadership style differs from Boden’s. He and his wife are estranged.” We also know that this role will be a series regular role which suggests that he’ll be sticking around for the long haul and won’t just come in for a few episodes before bouncing.

Given how the finale set up Herrmann to succeed Boden as Chief, it’s going to be interesting to see what happens that leads to Herrmann being looked over for the role and how exactly Herrmann will react to working under a new Chief after being promised the job. Could there be some friction between the two? We’re not sure, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Herrmann butts heads with Pascal!

We’re going to get to learn more about Kidd’s family

While the burning question heading into season 13 is how Damon’s reveal is going to shake things up for both Severide and Kidd, it seems Severide’s side of the family tree isn’t the only one that might be expanding next season.

In an interview with TVLine , Andrea Newman teased that there is still more to be revealed regarding Kidd’s family and to stay tuned for a look into Kidd’s past.

“We established in Season 5 that her parents died when she was young, and she was raised by her aunt and uncle, but there is definitely more in her family story to be revealed. Stay tuned….” Newman teased.

‘Total loss:’ Massive fire destroys pallet warehouse in Chicago’s West Town

CHICAGO — Nearly 300 firefighters responded Tuesday evening to a fire at a pallet warehouse in the West Town neighborhood that quickly grew to four alarms and a hazardous materials response.

The commercial building near West Hubbard Street and North Damen Avenue was deemed a total loss, Chief Jim McDonough of the Chicago Fire Department’s 1st District said after firefighters gained control of the blaze.

“These guys worked their butts off,” he said.

The fire at Commercial Pallets, Inc. began shortly before 6 p.m., nearly three hours after the family-owned company’s 18 employees had left for the day. It remained unclear late Tuesday as to how the roughly 20,000 pallets inside ignited, but their fuel and the day’s high heat and strong winds made for challenging conditions and prompted the need for the massive response.

“It was very warm out tonight so we had to switch guys up here, rotate them to get them checked out in our rehab area with refreshments,” McDonough said. “We take their blood pressure to make sure they’re all OK.”

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries but would fully recover, he said.

7-year-old boy shot on Near West Side, later dies at hospital

McDonough said there was minor damage to adjacent buildings, adding that the hazardous materials response was called mostly because of the materials at a nearby company.

“They have propane. They do a lot of welding. There’s fuel in there. It was singeing on there. There’s some impingement on the building, but thank God we were able to stop it there,” he said.

The fire impacted service on Metra’s Union Pacific West, Milwaukee District West, Milwaukee District North and North Central Service trains. Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management & Communications said the fire damaged one of the train tracks. Service was restored late Tuesday.

WGN was told that the smoke from the fire could be seen from northwest suburban Schaumburg.

McDonough said firefighters would stay at the location through the night to take care of spots that continued to smolder.

Where to Watch the Chicago Fourth of July Fireworks 2024

By Nicole Schnitzler

Skyline of Chicago with fireworks.

Chicago's 4th of July fireworks 2024 promise to be one of the best ways to experience the Windy City's summertime magic. As always, Navy Pier spotlights the season, hosting dazzling fireworks displays every Wednesday and Saturday—including Wednesday, July 3 and Saturday, July 6. Arrive to the shoreline early for a spot, or explore a number of other vantage points across the city. Below, see the best places to watch the 4th of July fireworks in Chicago this year—from skyscrapers to river cruises (and plenty in between).

The skyline of Chicago

Navy Pier's fireworks are a can't-miss summer tradition.

You can enjoy fireworks at Navy Pier every Wednesday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 10 p.m. throughout the summer. Note that their special Independence Day display, presented by Choose Chicago and NASCAR, will be on July 3.

The pier juts into Lake Michigan for the length of six city blocks and it offers amazing views over the water, but the nearby lakeshore is also a perfect place to catch the action. Arrive early for free musical performances at the Navy Pier Beer Garden on Wednesday, July 3 (1 p.m. to 9 p.m.) or any Saturday (2 p.m. to 11 p.m.). For the ultimate summer night, try to time a ride on the pier’s 200-foot Centennial Ferris Wheel to the start of the fireworks show.

For dinner with your show, head to nearby Reunion , where chef Art Smith serves some of his signature Southern-inspired plates. Settle in at the 200-seat patio for orders of shrimp and grits and jambalaya, and save room for dessert—on Wednesdays, their Sip and Slice promo ($17) features a glass of Champagne or Aperol Spritz with a slice of Smith’s famous Hummingbird Cake. Enjoy it all alongside live music multiple times a week, including on fireworks days (Wednesdays 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.).

Miru at The St. Regis Chicago

The St. Regis Chicago opened its doors last year, bringing with it sweeping views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. Stay overnight to turn it into a holiday weekend, or book in at its rooftop restaurant Miru , where chef Hisanobu Osaka (Morimoto, Daniel) serves a pristine array of nigiri and signature maki. Do explore the rest of the menu’s punchy, refined options—right down to vegetable courses like grilled avocado or Japanese cucumber (even edamame shines, served charred with Japanese seven spice). Desserts from pastry chef Juan Gutierrez (winner of Netflix's School of Chocolate )—coconut-mango cake; black sesame mochi with charcoal-vanilla ice cream—are equal parts focused and whimsical. Ask for a table outside for the best fireworks views, or just meander out there for the show—here, it’s a biweekly celebration.

River cruises

A summertime cruise on the Chicago River or Lake Michigan is always a good idea, but particularly so beneath a dazzling lights display. Don't have a friend with a boat? City Cruises has you covered, with hour-long excursions aboard their Seadog Lakefront Fireworks Speedboat Cruise every Wednesday and Saturday during summer months. Those looking to slow things down a bit can book one of their dinner cruises, be it their signature Lake Michigan outing (with a dinner buffet and live DJ) or their premier dinner cruise (featuring a plated dinner).

You’ll feel extra patriotic when booking with Chicago Fireboat Tours , a veteran-owned and -operated business featuring cruises on the Fred A. Busse, a retired fireboat that served the Chicago Fire Department for more than 40 years. They offer a fireworks cruise every Wednesday and Saturday in the summer, including on July 3 at 8:30 p.m. (ensuring ample time before the 9 p.m. show). There's also a fireworks cruise on July 6 at 9:30 p.m. (with the fireworks show at 10 p.m.).

Chicago Electric Boat Company has self-guided Duffy, retro, donut, and pontoon boats for rent, with the option to hire a captain or tour guide. Reserve one of their party barges, cycleboats, or yachts—they come with a professional captain and deck hand—both by-the-seat and for private groups if you’re looking to kick back (and look up). And just in time for summer, they launched a lakefront location at Monroe Harbor, offering private cruises with perfect fireworks views.

For a memorable stay, book a weekend at the Four Seasons and some time aboard their 55-foot yacht, where you can enjoy a curated fireworks experience, including a bespoke menu from chef Richie Farina.

NASCAR Chicago Street Race

The NASCAR Chicago Street Race is back on July 6 and 7, gathering fans for its 12-turn, 2.2-mile course that will take drivers by some of the city’s most iconic sites and landmarks. Stick around post-race on July 6, when The Black Keys will perform at Grant Park, followed by The Chainsmokers—natural accompaniments to that night’s fireworks, accessible exclusively through NASCAR Chicago Experiences by QuintEvents (packages ranging to include prime seating and hotel stays).

The Up Room has sweeping views of the city skyline—and any 4th of July fireworks Chicago has to offer.

The Up Room has sweeping views of the city skyline—and any 4th of July fireworks Chicago has to offer.

If you don’t do crowds and are content with neighborhood fireworks, opt for The Robey hotel in Wicker Park. You’ll be far from the lake, but you’ll be able to spot fireworks in every direction, especially from the hotel’s 13th-floor lounge, The Up Room . Afterwards, head to the 6th-floor Cabana Club , where you can dip your toes in the outdoor pool and order ice-cold drinks and Mediterranean bites by chef Michael Elliott. Try one of their frozen treats (Aperol pops or the piña colada, available with or without alcohol), and raise a glass as the sun sets and the light show kicks off.

Promontory Point offers all-encompassing views over the distant, illuminated skyline—but for slightly closer views, settle in somewhere on Museum Campus (namely, the coveted stretch between the Adler Planetarium and the Shedd Aquarium ). Keep the celebrations going on July 3, when the Shedd Aquarium hosts “ Jazzin’ at the Shedd ,” a weekly chance to enjoy drinks and music from one of Chicago’s top jazz ensembles, plus excellent lakefront and skyline views. Navy Pier’s regularly programmed Wednesday fireworks kick off at 9 p.m., ensuring a special way to wind down the evening.

Cindy’s at the Chicago Athletic Association

For an exciting viewing experience, gather with friends at any number of hotels with balconies, rooftops, or lake views—and if you’re near Millennium Park, make it the Chicago Athletic Association and its rooftop restaurant Cindy’s , where guests can enjoy bites by chef Kaleena Bliss while taking in exceptional city views. While there, try the Tierra Roja, a crowd favorite cocktail featuring mezcal, passionfruit, and green tea-infused rum.

360 CHICAGO

For some of the best vantage points of the Chicago 4th of July fireworks 2024, get advance tickets to the 360 CHICAGO observation deck at 875 N. Michigan Ave. (formerly the John Hancock Center). All admission passes include access from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and you can spring for an all-access ticket to experience TILT, a thrilling ride that leans you forward for a staggering 1000-foot-high view of the Mag Mile.

Afterwards, check out the recently opened CloudBar, a cocktail space featuring local breweries, Chicago-inspired cocktails, and stunning views for the fireworks.

Most anything hugging the lakeshore to the north and south of Navy Pier will afford prime fireworks views—and fewer crowds. For a lively option, try Shore Club , a summertime-only hotspot at North Avenue Beach , where the Margarita “Tree” (a cascading selection of mini Patron margs) is just one colorful way to ring in the long weekend.
