35 Thousand

Despite all the (obvious) positives, traveling can wreak havoc on your skin. Among the culprits: new climates, indulgent food and drinks , fatigue, drying plane cabin air, and more. For this reason, you’ll want to pack a skincare regimen that counteracts these stressors as well as targets your unique everyday needs regardless of the location.

To help you choose the best travel kit for your next adventure , we researched and rounded up selections that address a variety of circumstances and skin concerns, and fall under the TSA 3-1-1 guidelines . Our overall favorite, Fenty Skin’s The Glow Around 4-piece Travel Skincare Essentials Set, stands out for its consolidated product lineup with multifunctional items, a reasonable price point, and the versatility to be used on nearly any type of skin. But, if you want to target specific concerns or environmental stressors, read on. We’ve culled the best items for a multitude of scenarios.

These are the best travel skincare sets to shop:

Best Overall

Fenty skin the glow around 4-piece travel skincare essentials set.

Multiple products in this vegan kit do double duty, and SPF is included.

If you prefer an even more minimalistic travel skin routine, shop the brand’s three-piece set instead.

We’ve long been traveling with Fenty Beauty products in tow, and this skincare assembly — featuring standouts from Rihanna’s Fenty Skin line — is our number one pick. The vegan set, suited for normal, dry, combination, and oily skin types, includes four miniature skincare products: an antioxidant-packed cleanser, a toner-serum hybrid, a moisturizer with sun protection, and an AHA exfoliator with a reusable applicator. It has just a little more than the bare necessities to help combat travel-induced skin stress, but it’s not excessive either; it’ll all easily fit inside a clear quart-sized bag, and won’t break the bank.

We especially love that multiple products in the kit do double duty. The 1.5-ounce Total Cleans’r face wash easily wipes away dirt, oil, and makeup, eliminating the need to pack a separate makeup-removing product. The lightweight 1-ounce Hydra Vizor moisturizer contains SPF 30 and also works well as a primer. Furthermore, the moisturizer’s pump-style container is extra sanitary for travel (so you’re not transferring any germs from your fingers into a product tub). For those who prefer a more minimal routine, the brand also offers a three-piece version of the travel kit (sans exfoliator), which comes with a trial-sized body cream.

Best Overall, Runner-up

35thousand all the radiance set.

Four full-sized products (1.7 ounces each) including an SPF 30 serum and bamboo washcloth come in a clear zip case.

It’s on the more expensive side for the size.

If you’ve never heard of 35thousand, it’s a skincare line that was made for travel — literally. All of the brand’s products are travel-friendly in terms of size, containers, and the skin concerns they address. The set is more of a splurge, but that’s because each product in this vegan kit was carefully designed to function in place of multiple other products. For example, the makeup-removing cleansing balm can double as a hydration mask when left on skin for 10-20 minutes. Or, try the refreshing and toning mist in place of water (along with the cleanser) if you don’t have access to a sink.

We love that the day serum includes SPF 30 and a subtle tint hint for added glow while on the move, and the hyaluronic acid-rich cream delivers much needed hydration. The best part? The items come housed in a clear zip case (with room for a few more products) and there’s a mini bamboo washcloth which comes in a smaller zip case to keep it separate from the rest of your stash.

Best for Sensitive Skin

Ren clean skincare evercalm skin zen trio.

Natural ingredients like plant oils can help soothe delicate skin.

You may want to consult your dermatologist first if your skin is highly sensitive.

If your skin tends to be fickle, you may want to follow a less-is-more approach to your routine. Enter this three-piece system, which includes only the essentials. The ultra-gentle cleansing milk is the perfect wash for delicate skin, and the kit follows that with a calming cream for daytime and a recovery balm with an intensely nourishing barrier for bedtime. Even if you don’t generally have sensitive skin, travel conditions (such as plane cabins, new climates, and bedsheet fabrics you’re not used to) can cause your skin to flare up on vacation, and these soothing products featuring sea buckthorn berry, jojoba, and sunflower seed oils can be a welcome relief.

Best for Combination Skin

Caudalie vinoperfect brightening solution set.

The oil-free gel moisturizer is great for warmer climates.

If you prefer a more matte finish, you might not love the pearlescent moisturizer.

Designed to target uneven skin texture, this three-piece set includes a gentle glycolic essence (which the brand recommends applying with a cotton round after cleansing), a dark spot serum (to be used on face, neck, and décolleté), and a brightening moisturizer (to be slathered on morning and night, after serum application). The oil-free moisturizer has a lightweight gel texture, which makes it a great companion for trips to warmer climates. It also has pearlescent minerals which deliver an immediate visible glow to skin.

Best for Oily Skin

Priori the clear skin now kit.

This no-fuss routine is aimed at clearing and soothing blemish-prone skin.

To avoid possible irritation, start slow with the gel perfector only.

If your skin tends to break out under stress, you’ll need targeted products to combat the effects of a change in daily routine. This small-but-mighty set includes a two-week supply of skincare essentials designed to offer blemish control and clear oily skin. The first step is a calming lactic acid cleanser, which is still tough enough to remove eye makeup. Next comes a salicylic acid gel perfector aimed at balancing oily skin that can lead to breakouts, and that doubles as a mattifying primer. (The brand recommends starting usage at a few times a week to see how your skin reacts and before bumping up to daily application.) Finally, there’s an oil-free, silky-smooth replenishing moisturizer, which can also be used post sunburn to soothe skin.

Best for Dry Skin

Biossance miracle moisture set.

Four squalene-packed products work in tandem to help target parched skin.

The set does not include a cleanser or a product with SPF.

Plane cabins are practically synonymous with dry skin. That’s because an aircraft’s filtration system — which takes in outside air and circulates it in the cabin — causes humidity to drop well below what is comfortable for most people. Each of the four steps in this routine (a soothing eye cream, a plumping serum, a rich moisturizer, and a finishing Vitamin C oil) contain squalane , an ingredient said to have powerful hydrating properties. Not only is the kit a good fit for anyone with naturally drier skin or who may be experiencing abnormal dryness due to time of year or destination climates, but it can be great to boost lost moisture due to the flight alone. We love that this set includes a really creamy eye product, since delicate eye-area skin might need a little extra love after an aptly monikered red-eye flight .

Best for Normal Skin

Olehenriksen find your glow brightening skincare set.

Packed with vitamin C, these products can help brighten dull, travel-stressed skin.

This set does not include SPF, and you’ll want to layer some of top of any areas where PHAs were applied.

If your skin isn’t fussy, you can focus your routine on products that target long-term skin concerns. Olehenriksen’s four-piece set is anchored by the hero ingredient Vitamin C , which can treat photoaging and hyperpigmentation. An orange fruit water-based daily cleanser, a Vitamin C serum, a nourishing gel cream, and a color-correcting eye cream are designed to help improve luminosity, which can certainly suffer when we put our skin through the stress of traveling. The weightless-feeling gel is cool to the touch, making this set ideal for warmer-weather locations — but don’t forget to pack SPF for vital sun protection, which is not included in this kit.

Best for Lips

Fresh sugar collection lip care set.

These tiny lip balms deliver moisture and a variety of subtle colors.

Depending on the length of your trip, you may not need five different options.

We’ve talked a lot about skin dryness due to travel, but don’t neglect your parched pout. Fresh’s cult-favorite Sugar lip products are famous for delivering moisture along with subtle, buildable color. They’ll do double duty on your next trip by replenishing chapped lips and potentially replacing any lipsticks you might have considered packing.

This five-piece set includes mini versions of the brand’s best-selling colorless Advanced Therapy lip treatment (a must-have to combat drying plane cabin air), refreshing and softening Mint Rush, and three buildable tinted balms. The color balms — in rosé (a rosy pink), honey (a warm terracotta), and petal (a nude blush) — deliver a subtle tint with one swipe and a deeper shade when layered. If you don’t feel like carrying five lip products, the brand also makes a three-piece set .

Best for Eyes

Charlotte tilbury recovery skin set.

A cult-favorite cream is coupled with two soothing, hydrating serums.

This set is best suited for normal and dry skin types and does not include any cleansing products or SPF.

Jet lag, lack of sleep on red-eye flights, and more can all add up to dryness and redness around the eye area while jet setting. Charlotte Tilbury’s Recovery Skin Set is designed to restore hydration and plumpness with its trio of soothing products. Included is a half-ounce container of the celebrity-loved brand ’s cult-favorite hyaluronic acid-based Magic Cream, a mini serving of a lightweight Vitamin C serum, and a depuffing eye serum containing caffeine. We especially love the eye serum because it has a metal applicator tip which delivers a cooling sensation to your eye area when applied.

Best for In-flight Use

Shielded beauty self defense system set.

We keep these moisturizing minis close while in the air to replenish skin mid-flight.

You’ll need to pack other skincare items for a full routine as this set only has a hydrating mist, facial moisturizer, and hand and body lotion.

Plane cabins are notoriously harsh on skin and just a couple of hours in the air can leave your epidermis feeling parched. Whenever we fly, we love to keep a teeny bottle of hydrating mist — such as the soothing and energizing spritz in this three-piece kit — handy for a little mid-flight refresh. You can even apply it over makeup. Equally essential: the hand and body lotion which can aid any exposed body skin pre-, mid-, and post-flight and the nourishing facial moisturizer. Designed to protect skin against environmental elements, this set is also ideal for packing for new climates that your skin isn’t accustomed to.

Best for Warmer Climates

Image skincare ready, set, discover set.

A minimalistic skincare routine means more time for soaking in your trip .

If you prefer a more radiant finish on your beauty products, the mattifying moisturizer might not be your favorite.

When outdoor activities are on the itinerary, sun protection should be at the top of your packing list (yes, even in colder locations). With ingredients designed to hydrate and brighten — plus SPF — Image Skincare’s three-item set is a great low-fuss find for beach or warm-weather vacations. It starts with a mild cleanser, which is followed by a hydrating and brightening hyaluronic acid- and Vitamin C-packed serum. The last step, a mattifying moisturizer, offers SPF 30 sun protection. A bonus: The products come in a reusable TSA-friendly clear zip case that gives you one less thing to think about while packing for your next adventure.

Best for Colder Climates

Glossier the skincare edit.

The kit comes with two of Glossier’s cult-favorite lip balm minis.

None of the included products have any SPF.

Cold, dry air can quickly lead to skin dryness and redness as well as chapped lips. If you’re traveling to a climate that’s chillier than you’re used to, Glossier’s Skincare Edit set could be a great companion. It includes mini versions of the brand’s makeup-removing Milky Jelly Cleanser, the hydrating Super Bounce Serum (which they recommend pressing 3-4 drops gently into skin after cleansing), a shea- and murumuru-butter-rich moisturizer (which doubles as a primer), and Futuredew (an oil-serum hybrid that should be applied as the last step in your skincare routine, after sunscreen). We love that this kit also gives you two Balm Dotcom lip balms (one non-tinted and one barely-there pink), which will certainly come in handy if your lips dry out when temperatures drop. A bonus: it includes a nylon-spandex headband that's ideal for washing your face, and everything comes in a molded, recyclable paper case.

Tips for Buying Travel-sized Skincare Kits

Prioritize portability.

When traveling, especially via plane, you’ll want your skincare regimen to follow certain guidelines. First, anything going in your carry-on should adhere to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule (all liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in containers of 3.4 ounces or less and should all fit into a single, clear quart-sized bag). You’ll also want to minimize the number of products you’re hauling as much as possible, per the quart-sized bag.

Consider your usual skin concerns and the climate at your destination

You’ll also want to think about the specific stressors your skin will be exposed to on your trip and stock up on products that can help combat those: Will you be spending ample time in the sun? Are you entering drying, cold weather? Will you be wearing more makeup than usual? These are all things to take into consideration when shopping for products to pack for your next vacation.

  • What I Like About Simple Hydrating Light Moisturiser.

What I Dislike About Simple Hydrating Light Moisturiser.

Possible questions & answers..

In every skincare routine , moisturizing is important, and this should come at the end of every skincare routine , to seal in moisture and keep the skin intensively hydrated.

The importance of hydration or moisturization to the skin can never be overemphasized. Hydration plays a major role in your skincare routine, i mean, your skin deserves its own drink to stay hydrated, supple and looking healthy.

I have used quite good numbers of  moisturizers  from different brand, they all have their ups and downs, but this time, I found another elegant moisturizer called “Simple Hydrating Light Moisturizer”, and you know what?, It’s a facial moisturizer in a 125ml size. I decided to put this skin-hydrator into the test to see how it goes after one-week of usage, I think it’s time to share my personal experience on this product, but before I plunge into that, lets know the importance of moisturizing the skin.

Just like  exfoliation is very important in a skincare routine, so is moisturization too. Investing in a good moisturizer is really essential as it keeps your skin optimally hydrated by quenching the skin’s thirst of hydration, reduces skin aging signs , helps potentiate your skin care topicals , helps balance the skin’s natural oil production and also helps your  makeup  apply better.

“Combination skin needs a good moisturizer,” stresses Heather D. Rogers , dermatologist and co-founder of Modern Dermatology in Seattle. “Skipping this step for fear of looking greasy is hard on your drier areas, like cheeks, under-eyes, and neck.” While you could apply moisturizer sparingly on areas where you’re dry, Rogers recommends an alternative strategy: Switch to a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer for summer.

Rachel Westbay , a board-certified dermatologist at Marmur Medical , agrees, explaining that the proper moisturizer will provide hydration to areas of dryness while mattifying areas where you might have excess oil. “Consider a mattifying moisturizer to regulate excessive oil production, yet ensure it contains hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, B5 (pantothenol), glycerin, and squalane to assist with the areas more in need of hydration,” she says.

After testing and reviewing dozens of top-rated options, what follows is our list of the best moisturizers for combination skin recommended by expert dermatologists and estheticians.

Pore size is a common complaint among those with combination skin, according to Westbay. This oil-free gel cream contains Japanese botanicals, like wild rose, green tea, and fermented rice, which help minimize pore growth. The derm likes this moisturizer because the texture is super light, while still adequately hydrating the areas of the face that tend to be drier.

One reviewer says: “I have been using [this mosturizer] for five years. My skin is combination type and acne-prone—no other cream can compare to this one. It doesn’t break out my skin and it provides hydration. It leaves my skin very balanced.” — Angela

According to Muneeb Shah , a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Remedy , one of the best moisturizers for combination skin is available at the drugstore. “This water-gel formula is perfect for combo skin,” says Shah. “It features hyaluronic acid to help the skin retain moisture, leaving you hydrated without [excess] oils.”

One reviewer says: “I have used this moisturizer for years. I like that it is light and very effective. Feels cool as you put it on and is not greasy.” — Pamela

For combination skin, Westbay likes Skinfix—specifically, the Barrier+ line, because the formulas are formulated to treat both oiliness and dryness. “This non-comedogenic lotion is a great option for combination skin that isn’t quite as lightweight as a gel cream, but not as thick as a cream,” she explains. “As is true of the entire Skinfix Barrier+ line, this lotion contains skin-similar good fats like squalene, jojoba, and macadamia oils that mimic the structure of the skin’s vital natural lipids, and a hydrating red seaweed blend boosted with sodium hyaluronate, to easily retain moisture for long-term hydration.”

One reviewer say s: “I’m pretty acne-prone. I use prescription retinol and exfoliate regularly, and this is the only [moisturizer] I’ll use. Winter or summer. I have combo skin for reference.” — Sofia

Youth to the People Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream

Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream

Youth to the People’s Superfood moisture cream helps mattify oily areas and hydrate dry areas, and contains antioxidants to brighten and improve skin texture and tone. As a bonus, many with acne-prone skin find the ingredient profile helps heal acne breakouts faster, says Westbay.

One reviewer say s: “Keeps my skin hydrated and moisturized all day, and perfect for the summertime! It’s more cream than gel, but still, I like it a lot!” — Sarah

Peach & Lily Matcha Pudding Antioxidant Cream

Don’t let the “pudding” texture fool you—this cream is weightless, but delivers deep hydration, making it ideal for combination skin. Westbay likes it because it contains antioxidants to protect the skin from pollution and free-radical damage. Plus, it’s one of the least expensive options on this list, at only $25.

One reviewer say s: “The pudding consistency absorbs into the skin quickly without a greasy residue. Its smooth texture instantly hydrates the skin. This moisturizer has alleviated the dry and inflamed patches on my skin.” — Carolyn

One reviewer say s: “I’ve been using this at night for several months now and have noticed great improvement in my skin. I’m in my late 40s with very dry, and acne-prone skin. This is one of the few moisturizers I’ve tried that hydrates well and doesn’t clog my pores—it seems to help clear out blemishes.” — Alice

Kinship Supermello Hydrating Gel Cream

It melts into the skin and works on a deeper level to minimize inflammation and regulate sebum production, which makes it a great moisturizer for those with a combination skin type looking for a matte glow.

RéVive Moisturizing Renewal Day Cream

Moisturizing Renewal Day Cream

Luzon often recommends the RéVive day cream to clients with combination skin. It’s non-comedogenic and safe for sensitive skin types, plus it contains a broad-spectrum SPF 30 to protect skin against UV damage and premature aging.

One reviewer say s: “I [find] this day moisturizer with SPF 30 to absorb quickly. It is not heavy or greasy and protects my face from the bright sun of Florida in summer. I would highly recommend this to anyone who needs both moisturizing and sun protection.” — Ilene

Doctor Rogers Face Lotion

One reviewer say s: “I have sensitive skin and react to many face lotions, but not this one. It feels wonderful, nourishes my skin, and is just the right weight. Plus, my foundation goes on smoothly over it.” — Linda

  • Rachel Westbay , M.D., F.A.A.D., is a board-certified dermatologist at Marmur Medical in New York City.
  • Muneeb Shah , M.D., is a board-certified dermatologist and the founder of Remedy .
  • Mimi Luzon is a celebrity facialist and skincare expert.

Should combination skin types use moisturizer?

In short, yes. According to dermatologists and estheticians, combination skin types require moisturizer. “Don’t be fooled by the misconception that drying out oily areas will help,” says Luzon. “It stimulates oil production, worsening the problem.”

What are the best moisturizer ingredients for combination skin?

When it comes to finding a moisturizer for your combination skin, Shah recommends searching labels for the word non-comedogenic (which indicates the moisturizer doesn’t contain pore-clogging oils) and barrier-supporting ingredients, like ceramides and other lipids. Pore-minimizing ingredients, such as the fermented rice found in the Tatcha Water Cream, may also effectively address texture. Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and squalane are also key ingredients in many lightweight moisturizers suitable for combination skin.

What is the best way to apply moisturizer to my combination skin?

A great tip from Rogers is to almost spot-treat your skin when applying daily moisturizer. “When applying the moisturizer, use a thicker layer on dry areas and a thinner layer on oilier areas,” recommends Rogers. That way, you’re giving those thinner skin areas, like your under-eyes and forehead, a little bit of extra hydration while not overwhelming the areas of the skin that have adequate oil production. In the morning, always follow with sunscreen .

With tinted moisturizers, "the main goal is hydration with a sheer amount of color coverage," says GH Beauty, Health and Sustainability Lab Senior Chemist Danusia Wnek . "Color coverage tends to be sheer to light, and it may or may not include sunscreen actives." However, this doesn't mean that tinted moisturizers are only for those with dry skin: There are formulas out there for oily, acne-prone, sensitive, mature skin and more.

On top of evening skin tone and smoothing out imperfections, tinted moisturizers can also nourish and shield your skin from environmental stress and irritation, thanks to the inclusion of SPF for sun protection and powerful skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid , niacinamide or antioxidants. Note that you should be using a broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen or higher to best arm yourself against harmful rays.

Ahead, we've rounded up the best tinted moisturizers based on Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab testing and editor favorites, including drugstore buys.

BareMinerals' tinted moisturizer is not only a Beauty Lab expert favorite, but it's also a GH Beauty Award winner . Boosted with skincare ingredients like squalane and hyaluronic acid, it provides sheer coverage that feels more like moisturizer than makeup. "It gave skin a natural glow," Wnek said. In Lab evaluations, the formula rated highest for applying evenly and blending effortlessly . It also performed well at leaving skin smooth and evening its tone. Note that some online reviewers find it to be a bit drying on skin.

When we think of skin tints, we often think of super sheer, light coverage. However, this formula from Maybelline acts more like a foundation, with strong staying power and medium coverage . Loved by our Beauty Assistant, she notes that it "stays put all day and makes my skin look glowy, even and natural, all while covering up blemishes." She has replaced foundation with this product for more lightweight, non-cakey coverage. Some online reviewers say this makes their skin break out, so if you have super sensitive skin, it may not be the best pick.

Looking for light coverage and concealer in one ? This double-duty formula from Keys Soulcare impressed testers in Beauty Lab evaluations. The GH Beauty Award winner rated best for ease of application, leaving skin feeling silky, not irritating and not changing color during the day, all important aspects for a product for mature skin (and any skin type!). Testers lauded its "natural-looking," "glowy" finish. Some online reviewers, though, find the consistency difficult to use as a concealer.

For light, hydrating coverage, turn to Hourglass' skin tint. It feels extremely lightweight and delivers a dewy glow. Our Beauty Assistant loves wearing it in the winter when her skin is dry and needs a more hydrating base . "It never looks cakey and doesn't settle into lines, even in the dead of winter when my skin is dry and dehydrated," she says. However, it can make her skin look a little oily, so she sets it with powder; this may be too dewy of a formula for those with oily skin.

Applying tinted moisturizer has never been easier, thanks to this balm format from Anastasia Beverly Hills. Simply swipe the creamy formula all over your face and blend for a light, dewy finish. "It feels like butter on my skin ," our Beauty Assistant shares. "It blends like a dream and gives the perfect 'no makeup' look. I like to pair it with an undereye brightener for a light makeup day." It can make skin look greasy and settle into pores, though, so try setting it with powder to help.

If you're looking for high-level SPF in your tinted moisturizer, turn to this GH Beauty Award winner , which contains broad spectrum mineral SPF 50+ plus a plethora of skincare ingredients. Boosted with botanical oils and hyaluronic acid, the Beauty Lab test winner provides buildable sheer to medium coverage and received the only perfect score in the test for smooth-looking coverage . A tester loved that it "dispenses nicely and spreads easily." Some online reviewers are frustrated that the product sometimes transfers off of skin and onto clothing.

Beloved by professional makeup artists, this tinted moisturizer from Laura Mercier is also one of Wnek's favorites for her oily skin. "It is by far the best tinted moisturizer I have ever used in my life," she raves. " It doesn't feel like I have anything on . " The mattifying formula is armed with oil-absorbing powders to keep shine away as well. It contains SPF 20; however, the American Academy of Dermatology and the GH Beauty Lab recommend at least SPF 30, so make sure to apply an additional sunscreen with this one.

Because many tinted moisturizers are formulated to be super hydrating, some can be tricky when it comes to exacerbating acne and oiliness. But this Tarte formula contains skin-balancing clay and retinol to help keep blemishes at bay , plus the tint helps hide any existing ones. "It really helps blur blemishes in an effortless way," one tester said. "I find that it lasts a long time and can be relatively buildable." Two cons: It has a small shade range that doesn't cater well to darker skin tones, and it has only SPF 20 (the AAD and Beauty Lab both recommend at least SPF 30).

Made with hyaluronic acid to boost hydration and radiance, this affordable and lightweight tinted serum is ideal for dry skin types . It offers a sheer, skin-like finish, according to GH Institute Data Engineer Nikolas Greenwald . He likes to apply it with a slightly fluffy foundation brush . "I find that it doesn't pill or get cakey even when powdering on top," he says. Online reviewers wish the bottle came with a pump top rather than a dropper to make it easier to get product out.

A bit more pigmented than many other skin tints, Ilia's famed serum offers coverage without the heavy feel . Its creamy consistency is easy to apply thanks to the dropper application, and it is offered in a wide range of shades. "The formula's blend of niacinamide, squalane and hyaluronic acid is very much welcomed by my sensitive skin — turns out, you can find a good coverage tinted moisturizer that won't irritate skin," one tester said. Some do find the product to have an off-putting, chemical-like smell.

YSL Beauty Nu Bare Look Tint Foundation

Nu Bare Look Tint Foundation

To get a true "no makeup" look, try this lightweight YSL Beauty sheer tinted moisturizer. The GH Beauty Award -winning formula provides dewy light to medium coverage. Testers loved using the product, with one sharing, "I like how sheer it is — it gives a glowy, barely-there look yet evens skin tone." In GH Beauty Lab evaluations, the formula spread well, subtly covered imperfections and evened skin tone. The coverage lasted all day, even on a tester with oily skin , and didn’t irritate another user with very sensitive skin. However, a few found its flowery fragrance to be overpowering.

Rare Beauty Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

Though still lightweight and breathable, we love that Rare Beauty's tinted moisturizer offers a pigmented formula that covers blemishes, redness and more . One tester found it hydrating on her sensitive skin and easy to color match, thanks to multiple shade offerings. "It gives a surprising amount of coverage and leaves my skin looking brighter," she said. Some find that it oxidizes on skin by the end of the day.

Saie Slip Tint Tinted Moisturizer SPF 35

Slip Tint Tinted Moisturizer SPF 35

For a true "no makeup" makeup look, smooth on Saie's tinted moisturizer, made with mineral sunscreen. "I like the sheerness of this tint, its lightness and how glowy it made my skin look," one tester remarked. " It evens tone and blurs imperfections ." Ideal for drier skin, this formula uses grapeseed oil, hyaluronic acid and SPF to keep skin moisturized and protected, plus adds a dewy finish. It can look a bit too greasy on oilier skin types, though.

Pür 4-In-1 Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20

4-In-1 Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20

Greenberg highly recommends this tinted moisturizer. "It's made with soothing chamomile and shea butter, conditioning aloe and vitamin E, plus it claims to be vegan and cruelty-free," she says. It also contains retinol, which is great for treating fine lines and wrinkles . Good to know: It has a shimmery finish that some online reviewers say is overly glittery, and it has just SPF 20.

Smashbox Halo Healthy Glow All-in-One Tinted Moisturizer SPF 25

Halo Healthy Glow All-in-One Tinted Moisturizer SPF 25

A GH editor favorite, Smashbox's tinted moisturizer with SPF instantly gives skin "a noticeable dewy glow," GH Beauty Director April Franzino says. Plus, it subtly but efficiently evens skin tone with its well-pigmented medium coverage formula, yet still boasts a light texture. The tint is made to also work as a primer (and Smashbox is lauded for its top-performing primers), so you can wear it on its own or under makeup. It has SPF 25 so make sure to wear another sunscreen underneath.

How we choose the best tinted moisturizers

line break

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab has a long history of testing makeup and skincare products, including sunscreens, face moisturizers and foundations, both in our labs using state-of-the-art equipment as well as with at-home consumer testers, for factors like ease of application and skin enhancing effects. So, our scientists have experience evaluating formulas and know what makes a good tinted moisturizer. Our top picks are selected from previous GH Beauty Award winners, Lab test winners, editor favorites and more.

What to look for when shopping for a tinted moisturizer

two double lines

✔️ People with dry, sensitive or mature skin should look for a tinted moisturizer packed with emollients, moisturizers and humectants .

✔️ Those with combination, oily or acne-prone skin should look for lightweight formulas that offer non-greasy hydration. Thicker formulas can be cakey and feel heavy on skin, which isn't ideal.

✔️ Though some tinted moisturizers are sold in just one shade, many now offer multiple shade options . Make sure to choose one that matches your skin tone the best, as some can look too orange on some skin types.

Is tinted moisturizer good for everyday use?

Yes, you can use tinted moisturizer every day . Greenberg actually finds it perfect for daily use because it's light, offers skin-perfecting coverage and usually features SPF 30 or higher, helping to protect skin. But take note: Though tinted moisturizers often incorporate SPF, they should not be solely relied upon for adequate sun protection (because most of us don't apply enough of it!). The GH Beauty Lab encourages using face sunscreen daily, even when using tinted moisturizer.

What's the difference between tinted moisturizer and foundation?

Tinted moisturizers are not as pigment-packed as traditional foundations since their primary function is to provide adequate and lasting hydration to the skin, whereas foundations typically are designed for cosmetic purposes.

In comparison to foundation, tinted moisturizers generally incorporate more emollients and moisturizing ingredients and have smaller amounts of pigment. That means you shouldn't expect the same full coverage as you might with a foundation.

How to apply tinted moisturizer

line break

According to Greenberg, tinted moisturizer is pretty "goof proof" due to the light coverage in the formula, so you can just use your fingers and apply like a typical moisturizer , she says. "Or if you don’t like to get messy you can buff it on with a [makeup] brush — it’s hard to mess up!"

27 little travel luxuries to make any trip feel first class

Treat yourself to room service, fuzzy slippers and other simple pleasures that help relieve stress.

Key takeaways

Summary is AI-generated, newsroom-reviewed.

  • Before travel, pack strategically, including eye mask, magazine, salt, utensils.
  • At airport and on plane, take advantage of food, relaxation options, or brew your own caffeine.
  • At hotel, use your own slippers, order room service and make the space your own.

Flying is a grind. The long airport lines, the tight connections, the ever-shrinking legroom, the mystery of lost luggage — at its most chaotic, the experience can feel like being pummeled by a jackhammer.

Your coolest summer

simple travel moisturiser

When you’re facing the draining prospect of redeye flights or multiple layovers, even the smallest acts of self-care take on new importance. These little gifts don’t have to be elaborate or expensive to provide a dash of comfort. They might even fit into your carry-on bag or coat pocket.

In preparation for the hectic summer travel season, we assembled a list of 27 things you can do that promise to improve your mood while you’re away.

Pack better

1. keep a set of toiletries just for travel.

To avoid forgetting a toothbrush and having to brush with your index finger, keep your toiletry bag stocked with its own set of supplies. Replenish it between trips, throwing the products directly into your beauty case, or order the whole kit and caboodle, such as Aesop’ s seven-pack of essentials. Once home, store it away (but don’t unpack).

2. Refresh with essential oils

A drop or two of an essential oil does wonders to revive musty travel clothes or calm your nerves. Try eucalyptus for spa vibes or lavender for a more relaxing aroma, starting at about $5 a bottle .

3. Pack a DIY spa kit

Do you have an extra sheet mask or fancy samples of night cream or foot lotion lying around? Put them in your bag for your next trip, and treat yourself to a DIY spa experience. Bring cozy socks for the full pampering experience.

4. Block out lights with an eye mask

We’ve said it before , and we’ll say it again: Hell is tiny hotel lights you can’t shut off. Save your future self by packing a light-blocking eye mask. We’re partial to models from Manta Sleep . To double down on your fight for total darkness, pack light-blocking stickers for fire alarms, WiFi routers and other blinking pests.

5. Stash fancy salt, spices and hot sauce

It may look tiny, but a little flaky salt goes a long way. Jacobsen Salt Co. sells a perfect container for traveling gourmands for $6. You can add more flavor with Tajin to-go packets, a key chain bottle of Cholula hot sauce , Diaspora Co.'s versatile “Popcorn Masala” or Yellowbird’s handy travel-size hot sauce bottles .

6. Bring a magazine

You scroll on your phone every day, and you need a break. Books are great, but magazines (and, ahem, newspapers) are more mobile: lightweight, as breezy as you require and recyclable when you’re done. If you grab a magazine from a stack at home, you get the added benefit of decluttering.

7. Carry your own utensils

Unlike disposable plastic cutlery, utensils made of such sturdy materials as bamboo, stainless steel or recycled razor blades won’t snap under pressure. (Butter knives are okay with TSA ). In addition to providing a more civilized dining experience, the reusable utensils are eco-friendly. Some cities and countries, such as England, have banned single-use plastic items.

At the airport

8. save up podcasts and audiobooks.

The episode recaps of your favorite show have been piling up. That latest best-selling thriller is burning a hole in your AirPods. Don’t waste them on your daily commute. For road trips , it’s even better to stock up on pods or books that you and your traveling party all enjoy.

9. Buy a baller snack

If the Toblerone bar as long as your arm is calling, it’s your duty to answer. Even if the price of Chex Mix is high, grab a few bags of your favorites off the snack wall at Hudson News. Scout out local bakery outposts if an airport has one, such as Ladurée at Charles de Gaulle in Paris. Vending machines have evolved, with cupcakes and edible cookie dough in Las Vegas and hot ramen at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.

10. Or splurge on an airport meal

Yes, airport food is overpriced . Yes, you could meal prep instead. But it’s ultimately a gift to yourself to let someone else serve and prepare your supper — not a sad Starbucks wrap but an actual sit-down situation where you can relax near-ish your gate. Is it going to be the best Caesar salad of your life? Probably not. But you can increase your odds of making it worth your while if you pick a trusted local brand .

11. Shower in between flights

Found in almost every major international airport lounge, the airport shower offers a sudsy sanctuary from other people.

12. Moisturize at Duty Free

The best part of Duty Free isn’t shopping without tax — it’s the access to free samples of high-end products. Hydrate your skin with the latest moisturizer of the moment, or try on a new personality with a spritz of spicy cologne.

On the plane

13. carry your favorite pillow.

Sleeping on a plane can be a disaster for your neck, but a good pillow can help. Some turn to travel options that fit in your bag, like our beloved Trtl or the Cushion Lab Ergonomic Travel Neck Pillow. Others shun minimalism in favor of maximum comfort and bring a full-sized pillow (sorry, neighbor).

14. Brew your own tea

Stash a variety of fancy tea bags in your wallet or in a travel mug, which a flight attendant or food service employee can fill with hot water. Some airports (see: Istanbul) also provide hot water dispensers. Throw in a few honey sticks or straws for a touch of sweetness.

15. Ditto, for coffee

For various gross reasons , we have been warned against drinking coffee on planes. If you desire a good, clean and immediate cup of coffee, there are lots of caffeinators to choose from: frozen capsules by Commeter , gourmet instant coffee from Verve Coffee Roasters or the self-sufficient AeroPress Go , which comes with its own mug and menu of coffee drinks. Prep your coffee in the airport, to avoid the dubious hot water onboard.

16. Carry a cocktail kit

A commercial flight could never stand in for your favorite cocktail bar, but an in-flight cocktail kit can bring you a step closer. There are just-add-booze iterations for many tastes, whether you’re looking for a dirty martini or a Mai Tai .

17. Put on noise-canceling headphones

One of our staff got Sennheiser over-ear headphones for a birthday this year and he wore them on a flight to Florida. Afterward, they learned from their spouse that the 8-year-old sitting behind them had been loudly arguing with his brother the whole flight. They didn’t hear a thing.

18. Rest your feet in a sling

For less than $30, you can turn your ho-hum seat into something more akin to a hammock. The “ Airplane Footrest ” connects to your tray table to create a sling to rest your feet. It helps eliminate the rumbling of the plane floor vibrations, relieving back tension and soothing your entire body — a win-win-win for a long haul.

19. Wear compression socks

Compression socks are a lifesaver on a long-distance flight. One of Amazon’s top-sellers, a moisture-wicking pair from “Physix Gear Sport” ($16), helps reduce swelling and improve blood circulation during sedentary stretches at high altitude.

20. Spritz your face with mist

Face mists — like these travel-size tins from Evian , or this antibacterial one from Tower 28 — are a flight attendant favorite that deliver an instant dose of freshness. Just make sure not to dampen your neighbors.

At the hotel

21. step into your own slippers.

If you have space in your luggage, bring your plush house pair. For a more portable option, consider spa-style slip-ons or thick socks with antiskid soles, like the ones made by Bombas . Your feet will feel toasty and hermetically sealed.

22. Order room service

You could go out, but you’re exhausted. Maybe you’re feeling a little lazy — and a lot hungry. Now is the time to indulge in the convenient luxury of a cheeseburger clad in a cloche.

23. Pay for a hotel movie

Room service and a movie are a perfect duo. There’s an underappreciated comfort in watching a movie from a bed that isn’t your own. Perhaps best enjoyed on a premium channel, while wearing a robe and basking on a bed with extra-fluffy pillows.

24. Or stream your own shows

To keep up with your binge watches, bring your Roku, Fire TV Stick or other streaming device along. Then there’s no need to re-log into apps on another device in an Airbnb or hotel.

25. Give yourself a mini massage

If a full-on massage isn’t in your budget for every trip, you can still work out the knots with a portable massage gun like a Hyperice Hypersphere ($149), the Hypervolt Go 2 ($129) or a Theragun mini ($169).

26. Turn on a white noise machine

Annoying hotel noises are right up there with annoying little lights. The icemaker down the hall, the kids thwarting bedtime next-door and the industrial air conditioner can all keep good sleep at bay. Combat them all with a mini white noise machine. This one is small enough to fit in your pocket but powerful enough to tune out toddlers and traffic.

27. Aromatize your pillow

Signal to your body that it’s time to snooze by applying aromatherapy to your pillow. There are endless options out there, from the budget-friendly Dr. Teal’s lavender sleep spray ($8) to higher-end ones like Jo Malone’s Moonlit Camomile Pillow Mist ($50).

I'm Traveling a Ton This Summer—10 Items I'm Buying Now to Make Packing Easy

I t's that time of year again—summer travel season is upon us. Memorial Day kicks off the unofficial start to summer, and if you're anything like me, you already have your calendar planned. I have three trips booked for this summer, which I'm beyond grateful and excited for, but that means I have a ton of strategic packing in my near future. I'll be heading to Europe (specifically the UK), the Caribbean, and then back to Europe all before August. They're all amazing trips and all drastically different climates.

Trying to pack a suitcase that's both stylish and practical is always a process. Over the past few years, I've noticed that there are a handful of staple items that always end up in my suitcase, which act as the backbone of my vacation wardrobe , and then I add a few key items specifically tailored to that particular trip. To get a head start on prepping for my summer travels, I'm making sure I have those items covered. Below are the 10 items I'm buying now to guarantee an easy packing experience, from linen pants to easy dresses and crochet bags.

Linen is synonymous with summer—it's breathable, looks polished, and is ideal for travel. An oversize linen shirt can go everywhere from the beach to dinner, while linen pants make for an ideal airplane outfit. The versatile fabric has a guaranteed spot in my suitcase, regardless of the destination, so I'm stocking up now.

2. LIGHT KNITS

Lightweight knits (or beach sweaters as I call them) are a summer essential. For chilly nights by the water and overzealous air conditioning, I know I'll want one to throw on throughout my travels and wrap around my shoulders as a styling piece.

3. RAFFIA ACCESSORIES

Nothing says summer like raffia, and I like this texture adorning everything from hats to handbags to beach totes. There are so many chic raffia options out there right now, so you're sure to find what you're looking for no matter your price point.

4. EASY DRESSES

Summer style is all about looking effortless, especially when you're on vacation. The last thing I want to be doing is fidgeting with my outfit while I'm wandering the streets of a new city, so I opt for easy dresses only.

5. COMFORTABLE SHOES

This one is a no-brainer, but comfortable shoes are a vacation essential. Flat sandals and versatile sneakers are typically the only shoes I bring, so I'm making sure to order my favorite pairs before they sell out.

6. SWIMSUITS

Another vacation staple is a chic swimsuit. Whether you're heading on a proper beach vacation or just plan to stop by the hotel pool, a swimsuit you feel great in is essential. I personally love pops of color and prints on my swimwear, so that's what I have my eye on right now.

Shorts are to summer what jeans are to fall: a wardrobe basic. I'm partial to linen shorts for added texture and breathability, and I'll be packing multiple colors.

8. TRAVEL ACCESSORIES

This might sound obvious, but if you haven't pulled out your travel gear in a while, now is a good time to check that everything is in tact. I've made the mistake of waiting until the day before, only to realize that my suitcase is cracked from a previous trip. To avoid a repeat of that, I'm nailing down my luggage, cosmetic bags, and pouches for all my miscellaneous items now.

9. LIGHTWEIGHT OUTERWEAR

Depending on where you're headed, a sweater may suffice, but I tend to run cold (especially when a place is blasting their AC), so I like to travel with a lightweight jacket just in case. Whether it's the airplane, a chilly hotel, or a particularly breezy night, I'm always glad I brought one with me.

10. SUN PROTECTION

One non-fashion item I'm stocking up on now is sun protection. This is another thing I've mistakenly waited until the night before to think about and ended up dashing to Sephora at 8 p.m. in a frenzy. I know I'll want to protect my skin from the summer heat, so I'm adding SPF of all forms to my cart immediately.

Containers of Bag Balm on a conveyor belt.

TikTok Rediscovers an Old Rural Beauty Secret

Social media fans of Bag Balm, a moisturizer originally made for cows’ udders, say it’s just the thing for “slugging.”

It is the rare item that can be found on the shelves of Tractor Supply and in the pages of Vogue . And now Bag Balm , a moisturizer originally made to heal chapped cows’ udders, is a trending beauty product among the Gen Z “skinfluencers” of TikTok.

The social media personality Alix Earle swears by it as a cure for dry skin and dry lips. Others recommended Bag Balm as an alternative to Vaseline for the trend of “ slugging ,” or covering the entire face before going to bed to seal in moisture.

“I have turned so many friends on to it,” said Madison Bailey , 28, a social media strategist for the beauty industry who has posted about the wonders of Bag Balm.

Having learned about Bag Balm from her mother, Ms. Bailey keeps an 8-ounce tin in her bathroom and a 1-ounce mini tin in her purse. “You don’t need a lot when you slug it on your face,” she said, adding that the cost (around $11 for the 8-ounce size) makes it economical.

Bag Balm, a concoction comprising petroleum jelly and lanolin, has been made in a small town in Vermont for 125 years. Early on, the instructions on the square green tin made plain its intended use: “For sore teats and hard milkers, apply the Balm one hour before the night milking and immediately after the morning milking.” The label cautioned, “For veterinary use only.”

In time, farm families found other applications for the salve, using it to treat everything from cuts and burns to chapped lips, saddle sores and the needle pricks on quilters’ fingers. Little by little, its ability to soften skin made it into a rural beauty secret, one that was eventually adopted by people who had never seen the inside of a barn.

The actress Raquel Welch credited a regimen of Bag Balm before bedtime for her ageless skin. In 1999, the Canadian country music star Shania Twain, then at the height of her fame and a Revlon spokeswoman, mentioned Bag Balm in an interview with The London Telegraph, saying, “When I’ve been flying a lot and my skin is really dry, I’ll rub it over my face and on my hair and leave it there all day.” Sales spiked.

Now the Vermont-based company behind Bag Balm is figuring out how to market itself to the digital world while staying true to its folksy heritage.

Bedsprings and Dogs’ Paws

Bag Balm is made, as it has been for more than a century, in Lyndonville, Vt., population 1,136. In this part of the country, known as the Northeast Kingdom, winters are long, cold and snow-swept, and a cow’s skin takes abuse.

In 1899, John L. Norris, a dairy farmer, bought the rights to the formula from a druggist in a nearby town, Wells River, and began selling Bag Balm through his Dairy Association Company. Other products marketed by Mr. Norris included horse hoof softener, cow teat dilator and a leather cleaner and conditioner, Tackmaster.

By the 1960s — when Mr. Norris’s son, John L. Norris Jr. , was running the company — ads for Bag Balm promoted its “use also in the home for cuts, chaps and burns.”

A Wall Street Journal article from Oct. 23, 1969, reported that people were finding all kinds of uses for the salve: a Marine in Vietnam used Bag Balm to lubricate a 105-millimeter howitzer; a dentist in Texas claimed it healed his psoriasis; a woman in Maine said it silenced squeaky bedsprings.

Today, Bag Balm is used for bicycle chafe, sunburn, diaper rash, pimples, bed sores and nail and cuticle care, among other things. Dog owners put it on their pup’s paws. In a recent fan letter to the company, a woman wrote that her 84-year-old father has long used Bag Balm for car repairs. He calls it “the juice.”

“Our whole brand ethos is simplicity and versatility,” said Libby Parent, the 36-year-old president of Vermont’s Original Bag Balm, as the company is now called.

A woman stands before a large sign that includes a giant Bag Balm container.

As Ms. Parent explained while sitting inside a Mexican cafe in downtown Lyndonville that until a few years ago was the Bag Balm factory, the Norris family sold the business to private-equity investors in 2014. Under new management, the wording on the tin was changed to remove references to “sore teats” and to play up Bag Balm’s benefits to humans.

The company also introduced a lip moisturizer, soap and exfoliating body wash, and began offering its ointment in a travel-friendly plastic tube in addition to the classic green tin. In 2015, Walmart stores began selling Bag Balm.

“Bag Balm is not the most intuitive brand name,” Ms. Parent said. “We needed to define the product for people.”

Bag Balm’s agricultural associations still turn some off, however.

“Some people said, ‘I use that on my dogs, I’m not going put that on my face,’” said Faith Allison, 23, describing the mixed reviews she received after posting a video to TikTok in which she showed herself slugging with Bag Balm.

Other commenters have complained of the smell, which has been likened to turpentine. Ms. Allison, a law student in Michigan, made a response video in which she and her sister weighed in. “We thought it smelled like a doctor’s office,” she said.

Nevertheless, much about the ointment remains unchanged, including how it is made. Just up the street from the old factory site is the current plant — a squat, gray-vinyl-sided building, with a large replica of a green tin stuck to the facade.

Making the Paste

Though the healing powers of Bag Balm seem mysterious, the process of making it is quite simple.

Mark Perkins, the production manager, is one of seven employees who produce roughly 9,000 8-ounce tins a day. Mr. Perkins, 47, went to work for Bag Balm in 1997, he said, because his family’s small dairy farm couldn’t sustain his father and himself. Now his son, Logan, 19, recently joined him in the factory.

Mr. Perkins stood before a 55-gallon drum of lanolin, a wax secreted by the sebaceous gland of sheep. Lanolin is the soothing element that sets Bag Balm apart from plain petroleum jelly and helps give the product its distinctive smell. Inside the barrel, the substance had the consistency and color of caramel. Workers shovel it out.

Lanolin and four other ingredients — petrolatum, paraffin, water and hydroxyquinoline sulfate, an antiseptic — are heated into a liquid and mixed together in steel vats. Two filler nozzles squirt the hot liquid into tins that move down a conveyor belt. As the tins snake back and forth along the production line, the liquid cools and hardens into a thick, yellow, oleaginous paste.

Despite its growing popularity as a human facial cream, about 10 percent of sales still comes from farmers like Mindy McGrew and her husband, Kyle, who run a holistic dairy farm near Lincoln, Neb.

A first-generation farmer, Mrs. McGrew, 45, said she learned about Bag Balm from her mother-in-law, who grew up on a farm. She likes that it doesn’t contain artificial dyes or fragrances.

“It really is a household staple for many families,” said Mrs. McGrew, who puts Bag Balm on her cows’ udders in winter to protect from frostbite and on the tail area in summer to soothe fly bites. “Grandma had it at her house, then Mom had it at her house.”

That history of being passed down through the generations has made the brand cautious about changing its business strategy, said Ms. Parent, the company president. Bag Balm is unlikely to grow to the scale of, say, Burt’s Bees, which sells over 500 products. It was only two years ago, after the slugging videos began going viral, that the brand thought to create a TikTok account .

“Our longtime users were introduced to us on the farm,” Ms. Parent said. “So to be in Vogue, they can think, ‘This isn’t my Bag Balm.’”

She added, “We have something unique — why disrupt it?”

For many Gen-Zers without much disposable income, Facebook isn’t a place to socialize online — it’s where they can get deals on items  they wouldn’t normally be able to afford.

Dating apps are struggling to live up to investors’ expectations . Blame the members of Generation Z, who are often not willing to shell out for paid subscriptions.

Young people tend to lean more liberal on issues pertaining to relationship norms. But when it comes to dating, the idea that men should pay in heterosexual courtships  still prevails among Gen Z-ers .

How to Take an Everything Shower, Gen-Z’s Newest Shower Trend (P.S. It’s 4 Hours Long)

TikTok’s latest self-care craze is one we can actually get behind.

Post-Shower

While some TikTok beauty trends feel misguided at best —and blatantly unsafe at worst—others have proven to be fairly smart and just plain fun . On the latter side, you’ll find one of my favorites, the “everything shower.” The wellness trend is pretty straightforward: An everything shower is an extensive shower process consisting of, you guessed it, everything.

And I’m not the only fan. At the time of publish, # everythingshower has more than 200 million views on TikTok as people continue to share their lengthy routines in the name of self-care.

Rafael Elias/Getty Images

So what is an everything shower? Typically taking between one to four hours, an everything shower is a once-a-week deep clean meant to leave you refreshed and renewed.

Often reserved for at-home spa days, pre-date rituals, and self-care Sundays, the process (and it is quite a process) can be a little overwhelming. But fear not, I’m breaking down my weekly everything-shower routine step by step, from setting the mood pre-shower to cozying up in bed.

Keep in mind that an everything shower is all about you, so do what makes you feel best. Not big on body oils (spoiler alert: I am)? Feel free to skip it! There is no one way to everything shower.

1. First Cleanse

For me, an everything shower starts before I even turn the water on. First, I massage a cleansing oil onto dry skin to dissolve and remove any makeup, SPF, and other impurities from my face. After about a minute of cleansing, I rinse and remove it with water. I’ve been loving Peach & Lily’s Ginger Melt Oil Cleanser ($35) lately—the formula is super gentle and doesn’t leave behind any residue like some oil cleansers are wont to do.

2. Pre-Shower Hair Mask

Then I prep my hair and scalp with a hair oil treatment and pre-wash, deep-conditioning mask for my ends. Usually, I’ll massage a dropper-ful of the Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hair Treatment Oil ($36) into my roots and apply the Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Deep-Conditioning Treatment ($52) onto my dampened mid-lengths and ends. I let both sit for around 15 to 20 minutes while I continue to prep for my shower.

3. Dry Brush

Next, I dry brush my skin to boost circulation—I specifically prefer a dry brush with a handle, like the Goop G.Tox Ultimate Dry Brush ($25), to easily brush hard-to-reach places.

4. Set the Mood

Before warming up the shower and hopping in, I like to set the mood. This usually involves dimming the lights, lighting a candle— Nette’s Pearl Dust Candle ($82) is a woodsy warm, slightly spicy scent with an impressive throw—and, to be totally honest, setting up a true crime podcast on my water-proof speakers (probably not the best for relaxation, but you can play Taylor Swift or spa music or whatever does it for you).

1. Body Scrub

Four steps into the process, and we’re finally getting in the shower. An everything shower requires a deep full-body cleanse, so I start off with a body scrub. I like something gritty with both chemical and physical exfoliants for maximum results. I recently emptied a tube of the Naturium KP Body Scrub & Mask ($18) and would highly suggest.

2. Cleansing Shampoo

After roughly rinsing out the scalp oil and hair treatment, I go in with a cleansing shampoo to get rid of any leftover product, grime, and buildup. Personally, I prefer a cleansing shampoo over a scalp scrub, but the world is your oyster here. I rotate between the Virtue Purifying Shampoo ($32) and Ouai Detox Shampoo ($32)—both feature lightweight formulas that cleanse the scalp without stripping it.

3. Conditioner or Hair Mask

An everything shower is a true choose-your-own-adventure situation, and next up is picking between a conditioner or a hair mask. For me, this is usually an in-the-moment decision, though I usually end up using a conditioner since I have finer hair with an oily scalp. If I’m conditioning, I opt for a hydrating, lightweight option like the Pureology Hydrate Sheer Conditioner ($36). If my hair’s feeling fairly lackluster, I’ll reach for a luxe mask like the Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Hair Mask ($69).

4. Second Cleanse

While your hair mask (or conditioner) marinates, it’s time for your second face cleanse. I have an oddly specific list of requirements for in-shower facial cleansers: I want a plastic pump-top container filled with a simple gel formula that’s decently hydrating and leaves my skin feeling balanced. I have about one more pump left of The Outset’s Gentle Micellar Antioxidant Cleanser ($32) in my shower currently and already have a backup on the way.

5. Face Mask

Despite knowing better, I like my showers nearly scalding. So I allow myself a couple of minutes to really indulge and turn up the temperature—I should note that hot showers can leave the skin irritated and dry, so I spend this time away from the water but still in the shower itself. I’ll apply Tatcha’s Clarifying Clay Mask ($70) to my face (any clay mask will work), and let the steamy shower open up my pores so the mask can penetrate deep into the skin. I leave on the mask for just a few minutes before turning down the water to rinse off both my face and hair.

6. Shave (If You Want)

Whatever you choose to do, or not do, with your body hair is up to you, but I like to shave mine. Once I’ve given my hair and pores (yes, you have pores on your body!) a solid amount of time to soak and steam, I’ll shave my legs, bikini line, and pits using the Billie Razor ($10) and Whipped Shave Cream ($8). I’ve tried my fair share of shaving products and find myself constantly returning to Billie’s products—trust me, they’re the absolute best.

7. Body Wash

Last but not least, I’ll do a final body cleanse to be sure I don’t have any leftover shaving cream or grime on me. I’ll either use the Necessaire Body Wash in Eucalyptus ($25), which makes the entire shower smell like a spa, or opt for one of Saltair’s Body Washes ($12). They have a bunch of beautiful scents as well as a fragrance-free version I love.

1. Body Serum or Moisturizer, Body Oil

The everything shower tends to leave me a bit fatigued—after all, we’re 12 steps in here—but I’m always determined to end on a high note. I slip on a fluffy robe and hair towel, and immediately grab some sort of hydrating body product. These days, I find myself reaching for one of two optional: the Sidia Body Serum ($52), which is a lazy girl’s dream with its spray bottle top; or Josie Maran’s Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter ($38), which features a decadent formula that leaves skin feeling moisturized and soft for 24-plus hours. I lock in all that moisturizing goodness with a silky body oil. These days, it’s OSEA’s Undaria Algae Body Oil ($52).

2. Hair Serum and Leave-In Conditioner

Once I put on my favorites PJs, it’s time to deal with my hair. I’ll apply a serum to my scalp, like the Vegamour GRO Hair Serum ($64), and rake a leave-in conditioner through my ends. I love the Crown Affair Leave-In Conditioner ($48)—it leaves my hair hydrated and soft without weighing it down or leaving it too greasy.

3. Hydrating Serum

I’ll be honest: By the time I’m ready to tackle my face, I’m usually in a half-catatonic, sleepy state so I keep things simple with an old-faithful hydrating serum. I’ve gone through more bottles of the Krave Beauty Great Barrier Relief Serum ($28) than I can count and have gotten countless friends hooked on it. Whatever skin woe you’re dealing with, GBR will probably help.

4. Moisturizer

Last but certainly not least, apply a barrier-boosting facial moisturizer like the Dieux Instant Angel ($45). I like to take my time here and indulge in a bit of facial massage, using my moisturizer or a face oil to give me some slip.

Be sure to keep the self-care sentiment strong even after you finish up your routine. Brew a hot cup of tea, hop in bed a little early, and take some time to read or journal. Your body (and mind) will thank you.

Predators aren't waiting to eat you in Tasmania: 7 things travelers should know

simple travel moisturiser

  • Tasmania is an island off the southern coast of Australia.
  • The island is known for its pristine wilderness, rugged coastlines and captivating wildlife.
  • American travelers will find themselves instantly at ease in Tasmania, but don't be fooled – the island's allure lies in its ability to surprise and inspire with breathtaking sights.

The U.S. is teeming with beautiful landscapes, but there's something to be said about experiencing the power of nature halfway across the world.

Embarking on a journey to Tasmania, Australia, is like stepping into a realm where the familiar meets the extraordinary. For first-time visitors looking to start ticking bucket list destinations, Tasmania offers a unique blend of comfort and adventure – with a welcoming g'day. Nestled off the southern coast of the mainland, Tasmania boasts pristine wilderness, rugged coastlines and captivating wildlife.

Move over Hawaii, The Azores Islands also bring vibrant beauty (with fewer crowds)

With English as the primary language and a culture of warmth and hospitality, American travelers will find themselves instantly at ease. But don't be fooled, the island's allure lies in its breathtaking sights.

From exploring ancient rainforests to indulging in culinary surprises, Tasmania promises an unforgettable escape. I visited the island for the first time in May, the start of Australia's winter, and my jaw was on the floor most of the time there. Here's what you need to know before planning your own trip to Tassie.

1. The flights are exactly what you'd expect

There are no direct flights from the U.S. to Tasmania. You'll have to connect through Sydney or Melbourne to Launceston or Hobart. I went from Washington, D.C., to San Francisco to Melbourne to Launceston. It was terrible, I'm not going to lie. Next time I go, I'll spend a day on the West Coast before taking the U.S.-Australia 14-hour flight.

My recommendation is to take a red-eye flight to Australia and use it to sleep and switch over time zones.

Flight availability from the U.S. to Melbourne and Sydney (to transfer to Tasmania) is plentiful, with several major airlines offering regular routes. Travelers can choose from direct flights departing from major U.S. cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas and even New York (with direct service to Auckland). Airlines such as United, American, Delta, Hawaiian, Qantas and Air New Zealand provide nonstop services.

(New direct service from Dallas to Brisbane via American Airlines is expected to launch in October, and from Los Angeles to Brisbane via Delta in December.)

How to visit Australia without flying: Holland America launches new Grand Voyage

2. Americans need a visa to enter the country

American travelers should be aware of the visa requirements before heading down under.

U.S. citizens need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or an eVisitor visa, which can be easily obtained online before departure.

The process is straightforward, typically requiring basic personal information and a valid passport. Once approved, the visa allows for multiple entries into Australia for up to 90 days at a time over a 12-month period. I downloaded the Australian ETA app ( iOS and Android ), filled out a quick application, and my visa was granted in less than an hour.

3. Don't fret about the time zone difference

There's a 14-hour time difference from the U.S. East Coast. It sounds complicated but just embrace it.

The unique advantage of Tasmania’s 14-hour time difference is that you can truly disconnect and savor your vacation. The time zones down under can offer the perfect balance of relaxation and connectivity. Travelers can immerse themselves in the serene landscapes and vibrant culture during the day while still having a few hours in the morning and evening to connect with loved ones back home. It’s the ideal scenario for those seeking to unwind without completely losing touch.

4. Connection with nature

Travelers can immerse themselves in Tasmania's breathtaking nature through a variety of experiences.

At Cradle Mountain in Lake St. Clair National Park, visitors can hike rugged trails and take in stunning alpine views. If you visit at night, you can enjoy a view of cute wildlife with McDermotts Coaches .

But it's OK if you don't enjoy hiking. For a unique adventure, truffle hunting with The Truffle Farm in Deloraine offers another way to explore the island's culinary practices. Wine enthusiasts can savor the flavors of Tasmania at the Clover Hill winery in Lebrina, known for its exquisite sparkling wines and picturesque vineyards.

Whether it's trekking through pristine landscapes, foraging for gourmet treats, or indulging in fine wines, Tasmania offers something for every nature lover.

5. Nothing is likely to kill you

We've all seen social media videos of Australians battling snakes or large spiders, but you can relax.

Fear of wildlife often looms large for travelers, but Tasmania is free of large predators, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Here, you can explore lush forests and pristine coastlines without the fear of being eaten.

Tasmania’s unique ecosystem is home to creatures like Tasmanian devils (which are incredibly rare to spot – I also didn't), puggles, platypuses, pademelons, wombats and wallabies, ensuring a safe and enriching experience for all visitors.

There are three kinds of snakes in Tasmania and while two of them can be dangerous to humans, it is extremely rare to encounter them, according to Tourism Australia.

6. The food scene has something for everyone

You will not go hungry in Tasmania. Far from it.

Tasmania's food scene is a vibrant tapestry of flavors, reflecting the island's culinary influences. From fresh seafood caught in pristine waters to farm-to-table produce, there's something for every palate. Influences from British, Mediterranean, and Asian cuisines converge, creating a unique gastronomic experience. Visitors can savor everything from gourmet dining in Hobart’s top restaurants to artisanal cheese and local wine in countryside eateries.

The coffee scene deserves a special mention. The great people of Melbourne will claim they have the best coffee in the world, but Tasmania is right there with them.

7. Easy access to a different side of the world

Once in Australia, travelers can take advantage of affordable flights to explore the continent and beyond.

Budget airlines offer frequent, low-cost flights to other Australian cities. This opens up opportunities for reasonably priced trips to exciting neighboring destinations such as Bali, Japan, Fiji or New Zealand. These nearby countries are just a few hours away by plane, so you can expand your adventure without breaking the bank.

Embrace the chance to explore more of the Asia-Pacific region with convenient and cost-effective travel options.

How to Fake a Summer Glow

Skip the rays and still get a gorgeous sun-kissed look.

Lois Joy Johnson,

a woman at a tanning salon getting a spray tan

Skin cancer, wrinkles , brown spots, biopsy, Mohs surgery. These eight words continue to freak out an entire generation of former sun worshipers who loved to “lie out” and bake their way to a tan. However, many people ages 50-plus — including those who have committed to applying SPF 30+ daily — still believe they look healthier and more attractive, and feel better, when their skin has a sun-warmed hue. Thanks to updated self-tanners, bronze boosters and multitasking makeup , we can all go sunny side up with safe sun-free glow-getting options. Here’s how:

Tanologist Face + Body Self Tan Drops

1. Mix tanning drops with skin care for a mini tan.

Instead of jumping into a full self-tan routine, try giving sallow, ashy, blotchy, pale or tired complexions what I call “tan lite.” Tanning drops give mature skin a mistake-proof gradual sunny glow, and the best part is you mix them right into your existing skin-care routine. Just a couple of drops turns everyday moisturizer , serum, face oil or even a non-retinol night cream into a perfect facial self-tanner. Simply blend the drops with any of the above in the palm of your hand before applying. For a subtle glow, use two to four drops; for a more golden or bronze look, dial up the number of drops. By controlling the number of drops and frequency — from daily to every other day or once a week — you can easily achieve a customized level of golden warmth. Try Sol by Jergens Deeper by the Drop Face + Body Serum ($20, walmart.com ), Tanologist Face + Body Self Tan Drops in Light, Medium, Dark ($22, cvs.com ) and Tan-Luxe The Face Illuminating Self-Tan Drops in Light/Medium or Medium Dark ($50, ulta.com ) for a believable look. But don’t stop there. Keep the effect seamless by applying any leftover mix (or a little extra mix) on your hands, neck and chest, or blend a few drops with your body lotion and give arms and/or legs the same hint of color. And then wash your hands! Just a reminder: You still need to apply an SPF 30+ broad spectrum sunscreen daily.

2. Go to a pro to kick-start a stress-free summer.

Jumping into a summer wardrobe of bare legs , swimsuits and sundresses, or wearing a skin-revealing dress for a beach-side wedding , is challenging. You can’t beat a salon spray tan for first-day confidence — especially if you’re concerned about extra pounds, jiggly skin or discolorations. The flawless finish can help blur discolorations and warm up skin that’s been under wraps. A spray tan also eliminates tan lines and makes wardrobe changes — going from a V-neck swimsuit to a strapless one or pivoting from a tee and jeans to a breezy sundress — easy. To be honest, there is a difference between a self-tan and a salon spray tan. Only a pro can get every tiny nook and cranny and control the exact level of allover tan they prefer. You’ll want to note what DHA percentage the technician used for a possible repeat process later and be sure to discuss skin concerns like psoriasis , eczema, vitiligo and sensitivity when you book the appointment. It’s fine to get sprayed in underwear for modesty’s sake (or in a bathing suit) but choose your briefest pair and exfoliate your skin before “tanning” for a smooth, even finish. Make sure to wear loose black clothing to the salon, and wait to shower for six to eight hours afterward to prevent uneven color development and tan stains on car seats, clothing and furniture. While color begins to develop within two or three hours, give it the full eight to 10 hours for final results. Costs vary, but expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $75.

Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Moisturizing Mousse in Light Bronze; Bondi Sands Light/Medium Self Tanning Foam

3. Fake it with DIY self-tanner at home.

Whether you’re an experienced self-tanner who has the routine down pat or a newbie, be sure to choose a “tan” shade that’s compatible with your current 50-plus skin tone. The good news: Self-tanners have evolved from the once orange-y shade and now come in a variety of liquids, creams and gels. Some formulas claim to correct skin undertones, but the best and most goof-proof formulas now are moisturizing foams like L’Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Water Mousse in Medium ($12, target.com ) with hydrating coconut water and St. Tropez Self-Tan Purity Bronzing Water Mousse ($32, walmart.com ) with skin-plumping hyaluronic acid and Bondi Sands Light/Medium Self Tanning Foam ($27, riteaid.com ), which is vegan with aloe vera. The light texture is fast absorbing, and easier to apply and blend, and those that are scented have a mild tropical smell, not chemical-y. You can use hands or a tanning mitt, but follow the golden rule on “tan” day and shower, blot and apply moisturizer lightly to dry spots like elbows, knees, ankles and feet where color grabs and intensifies. Then, start applying tanner in circular movements using hands (wash immediately after) or a “tanning” mitt for pristine palms. Wait 20 minutes to dry before dressing, and if you have light brows or hair, avoid tanners on those areas. Two words of caution: There is a difference in formula between self-tanners for the face and those for the body. Buy separates unless the formula specifies face and body. And unless you’re really in a jam, avoid express self-tanners, which have a higher concentration of active ingredients to speed color development, but are less predictable and choose a tinted mousse like Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun Moisturizing Mousse in Light Bronze or Deep Bronze ($16,  cvs.com ) or see tip No. 4!

Sol de Janeiro Rio Radiance SPF50 Body Oil

4. Get a temporary tan that washes off at night.

Sometimes you just want a short-term bronze-y look … and fast. Let’s say you need to revive a self-tan that’s fading without having a total redo, get paler legs in sync with a sun-warmed face, chest and arms (a common issue for pants and midi-skirt wearers) or just enhance your natural skin tone for a bare “situation” dress for a party or outdoor wedding. A temporary transfer-resistant body bronzer like Hi Beautiful You Be You Body Body Perfecting Bronzer ($58, amazon.com ), This Works Perfect Legs Skin Miracle ($30, dermstore.com ) or Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Leg Makeup in Tan Glow ($17, walgreens.com ) solves all and washes off with soap and water at the end of the day or evening. And yes, so-called leg bronzers can be used on arms too (but not your face). Use your hands, a makeup sponge or a dense kabuki makeup brush to apply and blend. For more casual moments, say when you’re wearing shorts or a swimsuit, pick a shimmery nongreasy dry body oil spray like Sol de Janeiro Rio Radiance SPF50 Body Oil ($38, amazon.com ) or Coppertone Glow Shimmer Sunscreen Lotion ($30, walgreens.com ) for a subtle golden glow … fuss-free.

Physicians Formula Butter Glow Bronzing Serum; Pixi On-The-Glow Bronze Tinted Moisture Stick

5. Add bronzer to your everyday makeup.

Whether your complexion is pale, olive, dark or rosy, bronzer can add a sunny warmth to the face. But here’s where you need to be picky about product texture. Instead of powder bronzers, which tend to emphasize dry skin, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation , and look unnatural or cakey on textured skin, try the new category of liquid bronzers like Physicians Formula Butter Glow Bronzing Serum ($17, cvs.com ) and Isle of Paradise Sunny Serum Instant Face Bronzer ($24, sephora.com ). Designed to be blended in the palm of your hand with foundation, moisturizer, tinted moisturizer or sunscreen before applying to the face, they provide an instant allover sun-kissed glow. Go slow and build your degree of bronzing by varying the proportions in the mix. Or get a more targeted effect by choosing a cream-gel bronzer like Pixi On-The-Glow Bronze Tinted Moisture Stick ($18, target.com ), which comes in four realistic shades of glow — Beach, Rich, Soft and Warm — or Burt’s Bees 100 & Natural All Aglow Bronzer & Highlight Stick ($13, burtsbees.com ) in Golden Shimmer or Bronze Splash. These are applied after your moisturizer, foundation, tinted moisturizer or sunscreen and blended on exactly where the sun would naturally hit to create a sunny look  —  the tops of cheekbones, across the bridge of nose and forehead.

e.l.f. Monochromatic Multi-Stick; Milk Makeup Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick

6. Summer-ize your makeup with color and gleam.

Some women have given up the idea of any kind of tan. Others have never been beachgoers in the first place. Both can achieve a radiant summery look without taking the “bronzing” route. One way is to swap foundation for a tinted moisturizer and bump up the shade one notch in a warmer, more golden hue. Though there are plenty of dewy-radiance boosting primers and highlighters around, your best bet is to keep it simple and minimize the layering. You want to create a more luminous look, not a sweaty one. The best way to energize your face and look fresher in hot steamy weather , rain or shine — even with a tinted moisturizer or sunscreen base — is to swap your usual neutrals for a dash of pink, coral, peach, berry or red on lips and cheeks (depending on your skin tone). Try a multitasking formula like e.l.f. Monochromatic Multi-Stick ($5, target.com ), CoverGirl Clean Fresh All Over Dewy Tint in 3-in-1 ($8, walmart.com ), Rimmel Kind & Free Tinted Multi-Stick ($8, walgreens.com ) or Milk Makeup Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick ($24, sephora.com ) for an effective solution. Note that while these may look super-concentrated in the package, the high-pigment formulas go on sheer and in just the right degree of color to wakeup features and skin fast.
