Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor, plus singer Adam Lambert, spoke today of the “heartbreak” at having to once again postpone the highly anticipated UK and European dates of their Rhapsody World Tour.

Following a sensational run across Asia and Oceania last winter, Queen + Adam Lambert were originally set to rock the UK and Europe in summer 2020. During the band’s spring break, however, the coronavirus outbreak left them no choice but to prioritise the safety of fans, crew and venue staff by postponing the dates until 2021.

Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic still far from resolved, the band are forced for a second time to reschedule the tour dates, moving them to 2022. “Under continuing Europe-wide Covid restrictions there’s no possible way the tour can go ahead as planned for this year,” Queen + Adam Lambert said today. “The prospect of again not being able to look forward to performing and getting to experience those wonderful audiences is just heartbreaking.”

To ease their loyal fans’ disappointment, Brian, Roger and Adam have announced a new and expanded set of 2022 dates for the UK and Europe Rhapsody shows, when they hope it will finally be safe to perform for large audiences.

Promoters for the Rhapsody Tour confirmed today that all previously purchased tickets continue to be valid for the corresponding rescheduled shows. Ticket holders will be contacted by their point of purchase for information on ticket exchanges for the new dates. New dates can be found at QueenOnline.com. “We wish to make it clear. None of the shows from 2020 and 2021 have been cancelled, just re-arranged due to COVID-19. We really do hope that as many people as possible who were booked for those original dates in 2020 will still be able to join us for the shows.”

On getting back to performing live again Roger Taylor says: "When we do eventually get to play in front of live audiences it will be with a ferociously renewed attack and we shall revel in the wonderful experience of actually interacting with them again."

Frontman Adam Lambert said: “It’s so disappointing to have to postpone again, but safety comes first, and we look forward to spring 2022 when we will be back, better than ever.”

The postponement of this year’s tour dates is especially disappointing for the band, who were looking forward to playing the shows as part of a significant landmark for Queen. With 50 years now having passed since the 1971 recruiting of John Deacon, completing Queen’s classic line-up, 2021 marks a Queen Golden Jubilee that the band was hoping to celebrate with fans.

Nevertheless, The Show Must Go On – and it will in 2022 when Queen + Adam Lambert return to touring and embark on their next chapter together.

Queen London Walking Tour

Culture Vultures, Family Friendly, First Timers, History Buffs

Check In Time

Departure time, return time (approx).

This Queen London tour is ideal for fans of Freddie Mercury and the iconic rock band Queen.

Queen performed their first gig in 1970. 50 years later, they are still popular and still one of the bestselling bands of all time. Want to know why?

Join our fabulous Queen tour and let our friendly guide take you around Queen’s London, sharing some of the band’s most daring, fabulous and poignant moments with you. Our Queen tour covers everything from the bands’ student days, where they earned a pittance, worked on market stalls, and rented shabby bedsits, all the way through to finding fame and fortune, performing in West End venues and rubbing shoulders with Royalty.

Your Queen London tour starts in the Royal Borough of Kensington.

The first half of the tour takes you back to where it all started. From the early days of ‘Smile’ to Roger Taylor, Freddie Mercury, and John Deacon’s auditions for Queen. You can quickly stretch your legs and take a selfie under the plaque that commemorates Queen’s first gig.

It’s strange to think that anyone could be a struggling artist, living in a dingy bedsit in this elite neighbourhood. But before Queen found fame and fortune, they enjoyed a Bohemian life of market stalls, grubby flats, and cosy local pubs. But it was home. Kensington never stopped being home for Freddie Mercury. One of the stops on the Queen Tour of London will be outside his beloved Garden Lodge.

During this Queen London tour you’ll be entertained with anecdotes linking many of London’s theatres with Queen. Let’s face it, someone as flamboyant as Freddie Mercury just couldn’t resist performing and filming in theatrical settings.

Also you’ll pass locations that helped catapult Queen to success in the early days, including venues where they performed and the radio station that once played Bohemian Rhapsody over and over again: “Wasn’t that a great song? Let’s hear it again!”

This tour is a Kind of Magic!

  • Visit the former BIBA shop where Freddie would visit Mary Austin
  • Snap a photo under the plaque that celebrates Queen’s first gig
  • See where Freddie wrote Bohemian Rhapsody
  • Hear about Freddie’s favourite and final London home, Garden Lodge
  • Stand in the spot where the band took promotional photos as Smile before the days of Queen
  • Discover what happened to Freddie Mercury’s statue
  • Knowledgeable, approachable and fun tourist guide
  • Health and safety accredited and a COVID-19 safe experience
  • Food and drink
  • Optional gratuities
  • British Sign Language is not provided on the tour

The Queen’s 10 most memorable royal trips abroad

By Hope Coke

While most of us associate travel abroad with holidays, things were rather different for the Queen, who spent much of her lengthy reign traversing the globe in her capacity as monarch. From State visits to Commonwealth tours, she was a master (or mistress) of diplomacy, meeting a slew of high-profile world leaders (from the esteemed to the controversial), and visiting historic destinations – often in the company of her late, beloved husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. Find out more about some of her most intriguing international visits below.

Commonwealth Tour: 1953-1954 When the Queen acceded the throne following the death of her father, King George VI, in 1952, she began her reign with a monumental tour of the Commonwealth of Nations – of which she had just become head. The longest Commonwealth tour to date, it lasted an impressive six months (from November 1953 to May 1954), and traversed 44,000 miles: taking in the West Indies, Australasia (encompassing Australia, New Zealand and some neighbouring islands), Asia and Africa. It marked a significant moment for the new Queen as she fully embraced her role and the duty that came with it, as her and her husband, Prince Philip, left the young Prince Charles and Princess Anne behind for much of the trip. The family were then reunited in Malta, before they all sailed home together via Gibraltar aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia.

USA: 1957 Although she had visited the USA prior to becoming Queen, October 1957 marked Elizabeth II’s first visit to the country in her capacity as monarch. She was hosted by the 34th US President, Dwight D Eisenhower, for a four-day State trip, during which she visited New York City, Washington DC and Williamsburg in Virginia. Eisenhower had first met Elizabeth when she was a young princess, so the reunion carried particular poignancy for them both.

India: 1961 India had been part of the British Empire within the Queen’s lifetime, with her own parents, King George VI and the Queen Mother (then Queen Consort) having been the last Emperor and Empress of India until the British Raj was dissolved in 1947. Coming in light of England’s problematic imperial history, it marked a new chapter in relations between the two countries when the Queen and Prince Philip made a State visit to India in 1961 – the first trip by a reigning British Monarch since the country gained its independence. The previous visit had taken place some 50 years before, in 1911, when King George V and Queen Mary of Teck were proclaimed Emperor and Empress of India at the Delhi Durbar.

Silver Jubilee Commonwealth Tour: 1977 To mark the significant milestone of 25 years on the throne, the Queen undertook a special Silver Jubilee tour in 1977. The monarch and Prince Philip travelled over 56,000 miles, visiting 14 Commonwealth countries, such as Western Samoa, Australia and New Zealand, as well as making their first ever trip to the island nations of Fiji and Tonga. The Queen is said to have personally wished to undertake such an ambitious tour, in order that she could share in her Jubilee celebrations with as many people as possible.

Germany: 1990 Although the Queen had paid numerous previous visits to West Germany during her reign, her trip in November 1990 marked her first journey to the country since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 – a significant historical moment as the Cold War de-escalated across Eastern Europe. The Queen was hosted by President Richard von Weizsäcker, and was greeted by some 600 children waving Union Jack flags as she visited the Laarbruch RAF base for an inspection. Making a rare trip alone, rather than in the company of the Duke of Edinburgh, the monarch then went to have tea with Von Weizsäcker at his Hammerschmidt Villa in the German city of Bonn.

Russia: 1994 Another historic event was the Queen’s visit to Russia in October 1994, constituting her first trip to the country. Hosted by Boris Yeltsin, the first president of Russia following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, a spokesman for Yeltsin commented on the significance of the moment, stating, ‘We realise that the British queen would never have visited a Communist country’. The Queen was joined by her husband, Prince Philip, first visiting Moscow (where they stayed at the Kremlin as Yeltsin’s guests), before going on to St Petersburg.

South Africa: 1995 The Queen visited South Africa as a young princess with her parents and sister, King George VI, his Queen Consort (later the Queen Mother) and Princess Margaret, and turned 21 during the tour. In a speech broadcast from Cape Town on her birthday, the future Queen pledged her commitment to the Commonwealth, promising that her ‘whole life… shall be devoted to your service’. Yet the dawn of Apartheid in 1948 meant the Royal Family did not visit the country for a number of years (despite the Queen technically being its monarch until 1961). So it was an important moment when the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh travelled to South Africa aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia in March 1995, coming as a gesture of support to its new government after the end of Apartheid, when they were hosted by new President Nelson Mandela.

Golden Jubilee Commonwealth Tour: 2002 To mark the 50th anniversary of her accession to the throne, the Queen undertook a special Golden Jubilee Tour to visit four Commonwealth countries – Jamaica, New Zealand, Australia and Canada – kicking off in February 2002. Festivities were somewhat subdued, however, in light of the sad death of the Queen’s younger sister, Princess Margaret, earlier that month. Yet there were some memorable moments during the trip nonetheless, such as a power cut during a banquet on the final night of the Queen and Philip’s stay in Jamaica.

Canada: 2010 Elizabeth II was technically the Queen of Canada, albeit as a constitutional monarch with a largely symbolic function, represented by Governor Generals and Lieutenant Governors within the country. It’s perhaps unsurprising, therefore, that she has visited Canada more than any other country: an impressive 27 times during her reign. The most recent trip was in the sumer of 2010, when the monarch and the late Prince Philip were hosted by the 27th Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean. The couple’s visit coincided with Canada Day on 1 July, which they celebrated on Parliament Hill in Ontario. There, the monarch gave a speech to a crowd of some 100,000 revelers, wishing them ‘all the very happiest Canada Day.’

Malta: 2015 The Queen had not been abroad for some seven years prior to her death. Her most recent international trip, however, was to Malta, for the 24th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in November. Despite the official nature of the visit, during which she attended a summit with the theme of ‘The Commonwealth – Adding Global Value’, Malta also carries particular sentimental significance for both the Queen and her late husband, Prince Philip, who accompanied her on the trip. The royal couple lived in the country from 1949 to 1951, while Philip was stationed there as a naval officer before his wife became Queen. It is said to have been an extremely happy time for the young couple, adding particular poignancy to the fact that their 2015 visit was their last trip abroad together.

The most famous images of the royal family may show them waving from the balcony of Buckingham Palace or hosting garden parties in its spectacular grounds—settings we will be able to glimpse for ourselves when the Palace opens to the public this summer on July 11, with the Centre Room (which leads onto the world-renowned balcony) becoming part of the tour for the first time. But when they’re not holding receptions at their historic London address, King Charles and his family spend a surprising amount of time in more under-the-radar pockets of the U.K.   From the grand houses where the Windsors vacation to the village stores where they run errands, these are the spots to see—read on, then use our map to plot your own royal tour of Britain.

The setting for a royal romance

queen tour england

The coastal Scottish town of St. Andrews will forever be synonymous with William and Kate’s love story. The couple met while studying at its medieval university in the early 2000s, and it was at 13A Hope Street that the young Prince attempted to impress his new girlfriend with his cookery skills. The couple would also be spotted on safer gastronomic territory at the local Pizza Express; although when they returned for an official visit in 2021, they opted for the upmarket Forgan’s , which specializes in local, sustainable dishes.   St. Andrews’ royal links have been renewed again recently with the arrival of Lady Louise Windsor at the university. Her parents, Edward and Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, have been hailed as the quiet new stars of the royal family thanks to the increased workload they have taken on of late, and their daughter has opted to study English literature here.  The town is an easy stop-off if you’re also planning to head two hours north to glimpse the late Elizabeth II’s beloved Balmoral Castle and Estate , a place where the royal family are said to be at their most relaxed—while researching my book on the late Queen’s style, it seemed clear to me that she was happiest wearing her Balmoral uniform of a kilt and twinset. Visit in August or September and you may even be lucky enough to glimpse the King out for one of his regular hikes.

A green-fingered king’s retreat

queen tour england

The King has access to palaces that have been the homes of monarchs for centuries, but it is at Highgrove that he has created a haven all of his own. Here, his passion for horticulture and sustainability shines through. Visitors can see the innovative practices he has implemented since he acquired the Georgian estate in 1980, from the beautiful Wildflower Meadow to the Cottage Garden, where you’ll find an urn that a toddler Prince Harry once used as a hiding place. Less than 10 minutes’ drive from Highgrove is The Rattlebone Inn , a favorite drinking spot for William and Harry as teenagers, and now famed for its modern-British pub menu.

Where a wedding transfixed the world

queen tour england

Romantic images of Windsor ’s Long Walk were beamed around the globe when Meghan and Harry married in the Berkshire town in 2018. Windsor Castle may dominate the landscape, but the royals love the area for its vast expanse of countryside—the late Queen loved to ride in Windsor Great Park, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, who live at nearby Bagshot Park, can often be seen doing the same now. The area has also become a haven for the Prince and Princess of Wales, who often pick up groceries at the Windsor Farm Shop , which was opened by the late Prince Philip in 2001. Get your fashion and interiors fix at Lavershot Barns , where Kate has been spotted browsing, or head for afternoon tea at Cliveden House , the historic country house hotel where Meghan stayed the night before her wedding.

A nelyweds’ island escape

queen tour england

When Prince William and Kate Middleton were first married, they lived a relatively normal newlywed life on the Isle of Anglesey , just off the northeast coast of Wales. It was a perfect setting for a couple who love a quiet, outdoorsy life. When he wasn’t working as an RAF Search and Rescue pilot, William would be spotted walking with Kate on Newborough beach (a place she later described as “very special” to them) or eating at their favorite pub, The White Eagle , in Rhoscolyn. The new Duchess of Cambridge was even spotted shopping at the local Waitrose a week after their wedding in 2011.

The royals’ rustic hideaway

queen tour england

An hour north of Highgrove is a more chichi corner of the Cotswolds , which Meghan and Harry made their own when they rented a cottage on the Great Tew estate in the months after their wedding. As well as being a country-chic base to host their famous friends, it also offered easy access to Soho House’s country outpost where Meghan held her hen party, and took Instagram-worthy bike rides. Enjoy brunch at Quince and Clover , dinner at The Boxing Hare , and marvel at Blenheim Palace , which traces its royal links back to the reign of Queen Anne in the 1700s.

Prince William, George and Charlotte attend Taylor Swift's concert in London: "A great evening"

By Lucia Suarez Sang

Updated on: June 22, 2024 / 7:58 PM EDT / CBS News

Prince William ended his birthday celebrations by taking his two oldest children to the Taylor Swift concert in London on Friday night.

The 42-year-old royal , Prince George and Princess Charlotte joined thousands of fans at Wembley Stadium during the first night of the Eras Tour stop in London.

Swift, 34, posed for a selfie with the three royals, as seen in a photograph shared on the Prince and Princess of Wales' official social media accounts.

"Thank you [Taylor Swift] for a great evening," the posts said.

Thank you @taylorswift13 for a great evening! #LondonTSTheErastour pic.twitter.com/NFSi8hAl1o — The Prince and Princess of Wales (@KensingtonRoyal) June 22, 2024

The singer also shared a separate selfie with the royals that also included her boyfriend Travis Kelce.

"Happy Bday M8! London shows are off to a splendid start," she captioned the post.

According to Kensington Palace, the photos were taken ahead of her concert. Catherine, Princess of Wales, who is undergoing treatment for an unspecified cancer, stayed home with the couple's youngest, Prince Louis.

Princess Kate has remained largely out of the public eye since announcing her diagnosis earlier this year. She made her first public appearance in months on June 15 at the Trooping the Colour parade , the annual celebration that marks King Charles III's official birthday. The event did not signify a return to public duties, with future engagements depending on when she feels able and under the guidance of her medical team, according to the palace.

Kensington Palace released a new photo of William and his three children Friday to celebrate the future British monarch's 42nd birthday.

The image included the message: "Happy birthday Papa, we all love you so much!" It was signed "Cx," an abbreviation for the Princess of Wales, who's often referred to as Princess Kate.

The palace said the image was taken by Kate in southeast England in May.

Earlier Friday, Swift was welcomed to London by the royal guard when the band played "Shake It Off" in front of Buckingham Palace.

Prince William’s Taylor Swift Trip Shows He Is ‘Brilliant’ Dad, Friend Says

Plus, King Charles cancels part of his tour Down Under, and why Prince Harry and Queen Camilla’s feud is still blocking a Harry/Charles reunion.

Prince William’s visit to the Taylor Swift concert with Prince George and Princess Charlotte was “a fantastic illustration of just what a brilliant dad William is,” according to one friend of William and Kate speaking to The Daily Beast.

The friend said: “It’s been an unbelievably difficult year for the entire family. The children have been amazing, and it was a fantastic illustration of just what a brilliant dad William is to see him there .”

The friend added that t he adorable Father’s Day photograph of William and the children jumping off a dune in Norfolk taken by Kate was another sign of William’s devotion to his children. “It’s great to see this side of him publicly,” the friend said.

The visit to the Taylor Swift concert came after the soldiers guarding Buckingham Palace played the tune of “Shake it Off” when changing the guard on Friday.

Why the Harry/Camilla feud is still the issue

The New York Times bestselling royal writer Christopher Andersen has said that he believes there is still significant tension between Prince Harry and his father King Charles over Harry’s attitude to his stepmother Camilla .

Talking to Fox News Digital , Andersen said that Harry still “resents” Camilla and that by saying “some pretty devastating things about her” he had “made it clear that he felt she was the villain in the piece.”

He added, “I think that still bothers the king, and I don’t know that it will be easy for him to [forgive]. I don’t think they’ll ever forgive Harry for that.”

In his book Spare , Harry accused Camilla of ruthlessly scheming to be queen, and selling him out to the media in order to get better press coverage herself in pursuit of that goal.

In Spare , Harry said Camilla “sacrificed me on her personal PR altar,” and described her as “dangerous.”

In remarks to Anderson Cooper on the show 60 Minutes to promote the book, which is estimated to have made Harry some $27 million , Harry said: “With a family built on hierarchy, and with her on the way to being queen consort, there was going to be people or bodies left in the street.”

The comments by Andersen mesh with The Daily Beast’s understanding of Charles’ anger at his son for publicly attacking his wife.

“Harry has made things very difficult for himself by saying such cruel and hurtful things about Camilla,” one friend of Camilla’s previously told The Daily Beast . “Charles loves his sons, but he also loves his wife. The last few months have made it very clear how important she is; she has been the one propping up the whole edifice.

“Harry has made it very clear, very publicly, that he despises her. He has forced Charles to choose, which was a very silly thing to do because Camilla and he both chose each other a long time ago.

“William had his reservations but he accepted his father’s choice and got on with it. Harry made a different decision, and one of the inevitable consequences of publicly calling your stepmother cruel names is that it becomes difficult for you to see your father.”

Another source, a friend of William and Kate’s, told The Daily Beast recently: “It is hardly surprising that Charles didn’t invite Harry round for tea and a scone. He did, after all, portray his wife as an evil, calculating, bitch in the biggest selling book since the Bible.” [ Spare actually broke records for being the fastest-selling non-fiction book.]

Andersen added: “There is really no foreseeable way in which they’ll ever be welcomed back. Even if Harry was to throw himself at the king’s feet and beg for forgiveness—which Harry is not about to do—the best he could hope for would be crumbs from the royal table, and the sort of grudging acceptance that is currently being afforded to Prince Andrew.”

Charles trip to New Zealand ‘cancelled’

Courtiers at Buckingham Palace have reportedly canceled the New Zealand leg of King Charles’ trip to the southern hemisphere later this year as the monarch continues to battle cancer.

They are, however, remaining hopeful that the king can undertake a modified tour of Australia , and attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government conference in Samoa despite his ongoing fight with the disease.

A source told the Mirror : “Naturally, it will be a bitter disappointment on both sides to not have the opportunity for the king and queen to visit New Zealand, but of course all are aware of the king’s ongoing health and the need for him to pace himself. It’s very much hoped there will be further opportunities in the future.”

The report should be taken seriously as it is typically a few months before these trips that the enormous circle of people involved in the logistics and security for such visits start to get their orders.

The Mirror also reported that the Australian tour is being reduced to six days—including a two day break—followed by the visit to Samoa, which will last three days.

Camilla has been said to have been concerned that Charles’ work rate is endangering his chances of success in his battle against cancer. “She has been trying to encourage him to slow down,” one friend of the queen previously told The Daily Beast. “Of course, he wants to keep cracking on, but she is afraid that doing too much could set him back.”

Windrush tribute

Prince William and Kate Middleton have paid tribute to the “Windrush generation” of Black Britons, whose collective name is taken from those who arrived from the Caribbean in 1948 on board HMT Empire Windrush.

“Celebrating the remarkable contributions of the Windrush Generation today, and every day. Your legacy is a cornerstone of our diverse and vibrant society. Thank you for your resilience, strength and for enriching the nation’s culture and community,” the couple posted on X.

The couple posted their message to mark Windrush Day, which has been celebrated on June 22 since 2018—the same year it emerged that the government had not properly recorded the details of that generation who had been granted permission to stay in the U.K. The Guardian newspaper revealed how brutally and unfairly many had been treated—with deportations and threats of deportation, some being denied medical care, and others having their passports confiscated—all despite living in Britain for so long.

Ascot revels

Well, simply everyone was at the Royal Ascot horse racing-palooza this week, with Prince William having fun with Zara Tindall . King Charles and Queen Camilla waved to the crowds, Charles continuing to fulfill his mission to be seen out in public as much as possible this summer. Princess Anne was there. Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie attended, as did royal power couple Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie . The sight of William with Kate Middleton’s mom, Carole —helping her out when her shoes got stuck in the grass—reminded royal fans how close William had become with Kate’s family over the years.

Election latest: Starmer's children 'worried' about possible move into No 10 - as Tories drop candidates over betting scandal

The Conservatives have dropped support for two candidates embroiled in the betting scandal engulfing their party. Meanwhile, Keir Starmer had admitted his children are "worried" about potentially moving to Downing Street. The Labour leader has also rubbed shoulders with a Hollywood star.

It's lunchtime, and we have a new bulletin to get you up to speed.

Whether you're mid-bite of your sandwich or just polishing it off, here's a rapid rundown of what you need to know:

  • The Conservatives have announced they will no longer be supporting the two candidates being investigated over placing bets on the election date;
  • Laura Saunders and Craig Williams will still appear in on the ballots - but won't be supported by the party;
  • The action came following pressure from both within and outside the Conservative Party, and  Sir Keir Starmer said the move should have come last week when the allegations emerged.
  • Labour, meanwhile, has announced plans to tackle knife crime ;
  • Sir Keir appeared at an event with actor Idris Elba as they discussed introducing a long-term strategy to tackle the issue;
  • Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper has taken part in an hour-long debate with Conservative Home Secretary James Cleverly , taking in both legal and illegal migration;
  • The minister said he does not "envisage" a Tory government leaving the European Court of Human Rights, despite the PM's threats to do so;
  • And Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has opened up about looking after his disabled son in an interview with Beth Rigby .

We've also got a fresh episode of Politics At Jack And Sam's , including chat about an unlikely dinner date...

Away from the campaign, we've brought you pictures today of the Japanese emperor and empress enjoying a state visit to the UK.

It's day one of a three-day trip - and its timing is indeed unusual.

During the entire 70-year reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II, the country never hosted state visits during election campaigns.

As recently as 2017, a planned trip by Spain's King Felipe VI was quickly rescheduled after then prime minister Theresa May called a snap poll.

This one has still gone ahead, with Rishi Sunak and some of his top ministers taking part in the pomp and ceremony.

But Buckingham Palace did say the trip had been "slightly adapted".

Missing elements appear to be the usual Downing Street talks with the prime minister, the visitor's speech to the Palace of Westminster, and meetings with opposition leaders.

However, Labour's Sir Keir Starmer is expected to join Mr Sunak at a state banquet this evening.

A Japanese foreign ministry official said the emperor and empress's visit would not be a political one, and it was hoped it would forge "friendly relations across generations" between Japan's imperial family and the British royal family.

Pat McFadden, Labour's national campaign coordinator, has been speaking to broadcasters about Conservative candidates having their support from the party pulled while they are investigated in connection with the betting scandal.

He said: "It's taken Rishi Sunak the best part of two weeks to act on this.

"That is just weak leadership - and what the whole thing shows is that if the Conservative Party won again on 4 July, they would think they could get away with anything."

Asked if he was worried about Labour candidates placing bets on the date of the election, Mr McFadden pointed out his party did not have advanced knowledge of the date.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has been on This Morning on ITV.

At one point, the discussion turned to the Labour leader's children.

Sir Keir has a daughter aged 13 and a son aged 15.

Asked if the pair are worried about a potential move into Downing Street, Sir Keir said "they are".

As children, they "don't want things to change" and have "things set up at home exactly as you would want them".

This includes their friends and "first little bits of independence".

Sir Keir says he and his wife Victoria will "fiercely protect" the privacy of the children should they end up in 10 Downing Street.

This means things like photoshoots are off the cards - with the Labour leader admitting this means the public does "lose" the chance to see him with his family, which "gives you a sense of what person you are".

The names of the Starmer children are not publicly known, with Sir Keir saying he wants them to be able to walk to school "as their own people".

He says the situation would be different if they were older.

"We're trying to make sure that they can have the lives of an ordinary teenage boy and girl," he added.

He confirmed the whole family would move in if he becomes PM.

Rishi Sunak and two of his cabinet are taking a break from the campaign for today's state visit of the emperor and empress of Japan.

The prime minister has been seen all dressed up with Lord Cameron, the foreign secretary, and James Cleverly, the home secretary, at a ceremonial welcome at Horse Guards Parade.

The King and Queen are also present.

While the monarch is not expected to visit Downing Street or give a speech in parliament due to the election, he will be heading to a state banquet this evening at Buckingham Palace.

Both Mr Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer are expected to be in attendance at the dinner - a nice break from all the TV debates, we're sure…

Reacting to the news the Tory candidates involved in the betting scandal were having their support withdrawn, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: "Why didn't it happen a week ago?"

Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper said the suspensions should have happened "immediately" - and said Mr Sunak needed to confirm the two candidates would not sit with the Conservative Party if they won their seats.

Sky News understands the candidates will not have the Tory whip if they win their respective seats, meaning they will sit as independents (see previous post).

The Conservative Party has today announced it will no longer support its candidates Laura Sanders and Craig Williams.

But they will still appear on the ballot papers.

We are too far through the election cycle for the Conservatives to select new candidates.

Instead, they will just no longer enjoy the support of the Conservative Party.

This means they will not get any help with campaigning or visits from famous faces to back them.

It is similar to what happened to Labour in Rochdale ahead of the by-election there earlier this year.

Despite the fact that they will be listed as Conservative candidates on ballot papers as it is too late to change them, they cannot call themselves Conservative candidates.

It is understood that they will not have the Conservative whip if they win their respective seats, meaning they will sit as Independents.

However, if the Gambling Commission clears them of wrongdoing, the Conservative whip could be given back at a later date.

Laura Saunders is a candidate in Bristol North West, and Craig Williams is a candidate in Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr.

The other candidates in Bristol North West are:

  • Caroline Gooch, Lib Dems
  • Darren Jones, Labour
  • Scarlett O'Connor, Reform UK
  • Mary Page, Green Party
  • Ben Smith, SDP

The other candidates in Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr are:

  • Jeremy Brignell-Thorp, Green Party
  • Oliver Lewis, Reform UK
  • Glyn Preston, Lib Dems
  • Elwyn Vaughan, Plaid Cymru
  • Steve Witherden, Labour

Sky political correspondent Darren McCaffrey  is explaining the latest developments in the Conservative betting scandal.

He says it is interesting it has taken "this long" to make the decision.

Craig Williams, one of the candidates, admitted having a "flutter" almost a fortnight ago.

Darren notes Rishi Sunak has been under "a hell of a lot of pressure" from political opponents to make suspensions.

He adds that the Tory position - saying they could not take action due to the Gambling Commission investigation - "didn't seem like a credible line" given Mr Williams said he placed a wager.

"So it was kind of unclear why the Conservative Party had not already suspended him," Darren notes.

Laura Saunders, Darren points out, has not been willing to comment on developments.

"But clearly, the Conservative Party - carrying out those internal inquiries, which the prime minister talked about being launched over the weekend - have found enough evidence that they feel that as of this morning, they should no longer be parliamentary candidates that are supported," he says.

These cases are separate to the two Tory officials who have taken leaves of absence while they are investigated.

What is the scandal?

In short, there are allegations people who had inside knowledge of the election date may have placed bets before Rishi Sunak announced it.

So far, four people have been identified as potentially being involved, with a fifth unnamed person also allegedly implicated.

What is happening now?

The Conservative Party has announced it is no longer supporting Laura Saunders and Craig Williams as candidates.

Mr Williams has admitted to having a "flutter" on the date of the election.

Ms Saunders most recent statement says she is co-operating with the Gambling Commission and did not say anything further.

The political hopeful also indicated she wanted to take legal action against the BBC for their reporting.

Are more people involved?

It is unclear if there may be more people involved with the scandal - with the Gambling Commission remaining tight-lipped about its investigation.

Sky News understands there are considerations over whether more police officers will be investigated, after one of the prime minister's protection officers was suspended due to the matter.

In the latest twist in the Conservative betting scandal, the party has withdrawn support from the two candidates who have been implicated.

A Conservative Party spokesperson said: "As a result of ongoing internal enquiries, we have concluded that we can no longer support Craig Williams or Laura Saunders as parliamentary candidates at the forthcoming general election.

"We have checked with the Gambling Commission that this decision does not compromise the investigation that they are conducting, which is rightly independent and ongoing."

Sky News has contacted Mr Williams and Ms Saunders for comment.

The prime minister had come under pressure to take action following the revelations over the past couple of weeks.

He had previously stated he could not do so without interfering with the Gambling Commission's probe.

This position now appears to have changed.

Among those calling for Mr Sunak to take action were other Conservatives Sir Robert Buckland, a former justice secretary; Tobias Ellwood, a former defence minister; Steve Baker, a current Northern Ireland minister; and Baroness Ruth Davidson, a former leader of the Scottish Conservatives.

The party has also launched its own investigation.
