Lamy Safari Fountain Pen Nib Size Comparison
So, you've decided to start your adventure in the wonderful world of fountain pens. Kudos to you and welcome aboard! The Lamy Safari is one of the top choices for starter fountain pens for their durability, writing quality, and affordable price. To help you select your ideal Lamy nib size, we compare the common LZ50 steel nib sizes in the video below.
Lamy Safari Nib Sizes
Here are some general comments regarding fountain pen nib sizing how Lamy Safari nib size comparison corresponds to other well-known brands. Much like clothes and shoes with arbitrary letter sizing (S, M, L, XL), nib sizes have a similar sizing designation (EF, F, M, and B). Since there isn't any international standard for what each of those sizes represent, we make relative comparisons. For example, pen enthusiasts know that Western (German and Italian) nib sizes are about a size thicker than Eastern (Japanese) nib sizes. Lamy Safari nib size comparison shows that Lamy does fall into the category as a Western nib, writing a size thicker than most Pilot, Sailor, or Platinum pens. The line weight of a Lamy nib is also thicker than many European brands. So, a Lamy EF will write more like a Jowo/Bock F nib.
Fun fact: most Europeans will refer to the nib sizes by their letter abbreviation. They would say, "I prefer writing with a B nib" instead of, "I prefer writing with a broad nib."
Extra Fine (EF)
The Lamy extra fine provides the thinnest line that works the best on various types of paper. Prefer writing small, slow, and neat? An extra fine is an ideal nib size for you. Lefties: if dry time is a concern, an extra-fine line will dry quickest, especially if paired with a fast-drying ink.
The next size up provides a slightly thicker line with an incrementally higher degree of smoothness and flow. Fine is a best seller for its general purpose writing ability.
At this point size, we begin to see more depth of the ink color and a greater feeling of smoothness. Keep in mind the type of paper you write on when choosing this nib size and up. If you don't have access to premium, fountain pen-friendly paper, then you either need to select a smaller nib size or upgrade your notebooks and stationery. For this comparison, we selected a Rhodia dot grid pad with 80gsm paper.
The Lamy broad nib is the smoothest round nib of this set, providing an ample flow and thick line. This nib size is best suited for large and fast handwriting styles.
Calligraphy (1.1mm, 1.5mm, and 1.9mm)
Lamy offers its stub calligraphy nib in a 1.1mm, 1.5mm, and 1.9mm size. Instead of a rounded ball tip, the calligraphy nib has a flat, broad edge for drawing thick downstrokes and thin horizontal strokes. This line variation adds instant flair to everyday handwriting.
While I wouldn't recommend the calligraphy stub nibs for fountain pen newbs, if you're going to learn calligraphy styles like italic, blackletter, roman and unical, then go for it.
Why pick one when you can have them all? Lamy LZ50 nibs are interchangeable on Safari , AL-Star , Studio , Logo , Joy , Scala , Nexx , and CP1 . All you have to do is get a little tape. Stick the tape on the base of the metal nib, then slide it out with your thumb. Slide the new nib straight in over the rails of the feed. You're good to go. Just make sure the fountain pen is cleaned out before swapping nibs to avoid inky messes.
Lamy LZ50 stainless steel nibs can be purchased separately in both the silver and black-plated styles. The difference is only in appearance. The black nibs match nicer with the black trim Safari pens.
This year, we're expecting several exciting and colorful Lamy pens, including a set of pastel Safari pens. Let us know in the comments which Lamy you're looking forward to this year and which nib size or sizes you'll be getting.

- Due to manufacturing variances, the replacement nib is not guaranteed to fit perfectly on your LAMY fountain pen. It is not uncommon for replacement nibs to fit more loosely than the original nib. As long as the nib stays on the feed and does not slide off on its own, in most cases it will work properly.
- The video features a 1.5 mm LAMY Calligraphy Pen Nib.

Lamy nibs comparison: ef vs 1.1mm, 1.5mm, 1.9mm italics.
21 comments:
Thanks for the comparison! I would venture to say that the wide Lamys are geared to those of us who are fond of the Rotring Art Pens (especially the rare and coveted 2.7). The neat thing is that all those nibs work on both the long handled Joy and traditional size Safari/AlStar. My significant other really only uses italic nibs and swears by them. One thing I have noticed is that there are a couple of vendors who will sell the Lamy with whichever nib the customer desires. You don't have to buy a stock nib and the specialty one independently. I will happily give my dollars to the one stop shopping when possible :) Happy writing everyone!
I was looking for a comparison like this because I got a Calligraphy set from Sheaffer and really liked the italic nibs, however the pens are not very comfortable to use and the cap does not close hermetically, making the ink dry. So I was thinking about getting a Lamy Vista with an itallic nib. I think it will be a 1.1 nib and I will get it from gouletpens. Great review!!!
Thank you for sharing this. I have only tried the 1.1mm Lamy italic nib, and it was a customers that I was re-grinding to a smaller size. I thought it was a pretty decent italic nib. My only 3 critiques for it were: 1) It's not a straight up italic, it's a cursive italic. I personally would appreciate it if companies would finally catch on to the naming systems used by FP people. It is an italic, but what kind? Stub, crisp, cursive? It's nice to know. :) 2) They seem to write smaller than the tipping is. Maybe it was the one that I tested, but the nib said 1.1mm, when it actually wrote about .8mm or .9mm. Not a huge deal... 3)The lack of tipping. I do wish they had some tipping, for the sake of wear/tear and time. But then, they're only about $15.00 a piece, so who cares! These are really minor gripes any way. I need to get myself a Lamy al-star (I love the brown one) someday, and try out the 1.9mm.
thanks for the review! i have found that Lamy nibs are rather inconsistent, with no EF (my usual choice) same as the other. I wish they would fix this.
That may well be. My EF doesn't feel as fine as I would have expected.
I've got the 1.5mm nib and it is scratchy, it catches fibers in the tines and makes the ink looking like its feathering when its not. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
All my Lamy italic nibs are very smooth. It sounds like you got a bad one. I'm not nib expert but I've picked up a few things from here and there. I would suggest looking at the nib with a loupe. Try to determine if the tines are aligned properly, if the gap between them isn't too narrow or too wide and whether the tip is smooth or not. Also, try to drag a very thin film between the tines, just to make sure nothing is stuck between them. You might have paper fibers in there and not even know it. By "thin film" I mean something like 35mm film (which might still be a bit thick), or something even thinner. I use a feeler gauge http://www.amazon.com/25025-26-Blade-Master-Feeler-Gauge/dp/B000BYGIR4/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1323228553&sr=1-1 which is cheap and great for this sort of thing.
I am not an expert at pretty much anything, but I heard the increase In looking better is a mix of things. The line variation increases differences between similar letters, and the ending of letters are more visible.
The 1.1mm nib is a good every day writer. Just be sure to use a drier ink (or one with irongall-content) or it will look like a simple broad line. Nearly all of my Lamy pens are equipped with der italic nibs (that said, there cheap ... 2,50 Euro per nib).
Hmm, they must be cheaper in Europe then. Here in the US you can't find them for less than $10. I actually ordered mine from the UK because they were cheaper, even after adding shipping.
Thanks for the comparison and the video. It was the 1.1 italic nib that got me back into the Safaris (after a baaaaad experience years ago with an M nib and pen that never wrote smooth, no matter what!)
The nib makes a huge difference. I had issues with my EF initially but then it wrote very smoothly after I tweaked it a little. I use the 1.5mm now because it uses more ink and I can go quicker through my samples :)
Hello, please let me know if it is possible to remove the feed of a Lamy Joy? I pulled it but it didn't come out.
Hi sorry but I don't have experience with the Lamy Joy. However, since it has the same nib as the Safari/Vista/AL-Star I assume the nib is also the same, meaning that it can be pulled out if appropriate force is used. I suggest holding it with a piece of rubber, like an elastic band.
I recently caught a video of someone removing their nibs with the top of their caps. I believe Lamy designed the "X" groove on the top specifically to anchor the nibs (in particular the non-italic nibs with the rounded tips: EF, F, M, B). Cannot remember the link but I think it was probably on YouTube.
Hmm that's intriguing. Would be nice if you could find that link. I was wondering what the X is for.
I'm sorry for the late reply -- here is a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnyI_o0ly-o I stand corrected; the cap itself was used and not the X groove, as I took a closer look at the video once more and realized my mis-info above. The trick is to hold the cap down flush and firm. The X simply differentiates the fountain pen from their rollerballs, etc. Hope this helps.
Thanks for this. I remove my nibs with my fingers, they loosen up after changing them a couple of times.
One way to upgrade those Sheaffer calligraphy pens is to empty the cartridges of the lousy ink they come with and use a syringe to fill them with something better, or get a Sheaffer converter. I put Noodler's HOD into my 3 ancient Sheaffers (F, M & B) and got better flow, better starting and better lines. I still wonder if Lamy Calli nibs or Goulet Pens Calli nibs would be better, smoother than these Sheaffers. I just tried making some labels with the Broad Sheaffer and it was scratching, more like stumbling, on the downward right-curving strokes
I'm curious about Goulet nibs too.
Lamy pens are great, I love their designs but i've never really paid much attention to the nib size or how that affects the writing. I just get standard ones because I don't use them for calligraphy or any fancy writing, just general writing.

Lamy Safari With A 1.1Mm Italic Nib - Frustrated!
- lamy safari
By shortwizard August 24, 2013 in Lamy

This is my first Lamy italic nib and I must be doing something wrong. I received a letter from a pen pal with writing samples of different pens and this was the one of a Lamy Safari with the 1.1 italic nib.
So, I ordered a new Safari and a 1.1 italic nib, but this is what my attempts look like. I actually used the back of the letter (I apologize if you are the pen pal and are reading this :-) ) so it would be on the same paper - apples to apples, if you will. It's not even close! It doesn't matter which angle I hold the pen, I can't get the same result. The stroke is much wider than I expected and I am rather disappointed. Is it me or is it the nib, or a combination of both?

The ratio of thick to thin stroke widths in your green and turquoise samples is much more than you'd get from a 1.1. Have you checked the marking on the nib and made sure they haven't sent you a 1.5 or 1.9 by mistake?
I like the green ink, by the way. What is it?
The 'trick' is the angle of the nib to paper and then holding the angle throughout the writing process. An angle of about 45 degrees will give the 'thick and thin' variation.
Sorry I don't have access to a scanner today to post example...but you can find many examples and instructional videos online...try looking for "cursive italic' calligraphy as just one example!
Don't give up!
I can't really describe how I am holding the pen. I'm not rotating the nib, I don't think, so it's pretty much "straight on," but the angle between the paper and the nib probably is about 45º. Maybe in my next letter I'll include a sheet with alternating lines full of 1.1 Safari script, leaving you space to write in between. I'm by no means an italic expert or anything (far from it, in fact!); this is just the way I've found it comfortable to write.
I agree please check the nib marking to make sure it is a 1.1
Please do not press the nib to the paper to hard, let the nib do the work, let the weight of pen be yor pressure, let your hand/forearm move the pen.
Agree with the need fo maintain the appropriate angle nib to paper consistently during writing as noted above.
Don't write too slowly
Make sure you do not have a blob of ink in the feed from just filling the pen
If above does not work it may not be you. Consider talking to your vendor for an exchange
I have several Lamy Safara calligraphy nibs including the Lamy Joy Calligraphy set. It is what got me started with improving my handwriting
By the way John Neal Booksellers here in North Carolina is a nice resource vendor.
Hope this helps. Let us know how you do.

As one of the posters said, cant the nib 45 degrees and you get the script you are looking for.

I logged on and saw the title of this post in the right sidebar and thought, "Oh, I have one of those!" and so clicked on it and passed a baffled few seconds before I went, "Hey, that's my handwriting!" It's all your fault! :-) Just kidding. I have a letter going in the mail to you on Monday, with some samples of the 1.1 nib. It's really broad!

The green ink is Diamine Meadow, my very first - and only - bottle of ink. I really like the color and it isn't too wet.

Thanks for the tips, and I have tried all of them, but I get the same results. I have even tried different papers - no change. I may ask them if I can exchange it for another EF nib and save myself the frustration.
Where in NC is John Neal Booksellers? Do they have a storefront or are they only online?
Yes, the nib is marked 1.1, clear as day.

Just an example to make sure you get the 45 degrees angle idea.
It was not written with a 1.1 Lamy because I did not have my Lamy inked at the time. The Safari has got a bit thinner thick stroke and a bit heavier thin stroke, but it is not bad. Thick and thin is quite noticeable.
Going by that image, I was most likely holding the pen at 90º when I wrote the lines pictured above. That's usually how I write with that pen, though I do rotate it sometimes.
I'm wondering if this isn't another case of variability in Lamy nib sizes.
It hardly looks like a italic nib writing, my guess is you are writing way slow, try writing faster without worrying the angle, italic nib will correct your angle anyway after couple of lines in most cases. Smoothest angle is the correct angle, thats all. (Considering you have no tine aligment problems of course)
One boring blue , one boring black 1mm thickness at most. . ..
Then there are Fountain Pens with gorgeous permanent inks. .
All factors involved when writing with an italic nib can change the outcome.
Ink can make a big difference a very wet ink can cause everything to run together and eliminate the look of variation.
Angle, technique, speed all affect how a nib like this writes. Sometimes lots of practice is needed.
Also size of writing, you may have to write bigger to be able to get the effect you seek.
Bad paper / wet ink both affect how much variation you see in the line.
Since you are trying the same nib from the same company this would not necessarily apply but italic nibs can be Stubs, Cursive Italic and Crisp Italic. Each of these gives different levels of line variation for the same size nib. (ie 1.1mm)

Vanness Pens - Selling Online!
In answer to your question above.
John Neal Booksellers is in Greensboro North Carolina
They are a web online store but do allow visitors
They carry calligraphy pens, bookbinding equipment, paper, etc. Check out their website.
Franklin Christoph fountain pens is in Raleigh North Carolina. They carry a number of pens of their design with choice of stub, italic, etc. 1.1 stub in high performance steel is very nice. I have this in their Stabilis 66 model deskpen. Check out their website. They provide very good service.
Also before giving up on the really neat experience of italic writing consider a 1.1 stub nib, a little less line variation but easier to handle. Hisnibs.com online sells Monteverde and Conklins with stubs and checks out the pen to make sure it writes well out of the box. Have Conklin Crescent filler with stub, very smooth.
I am not affiliated with any of the above.
Hopes this helps. Let us know how you do.
Thanks for the help and suggestions, everyone. I think it may be a defective nib so I have written to the company to see if they will exchange it. I hope the replacement will be less frustrating.

I've contacted the company where it was purchased and they are graciously sending me a new nib, which should be here this weekend.
I don't understand, in your post you said the inkline is wider than you expected.
Is it that your 1.1 nib writes wider than the 1.1 nib of the letter that was sent to you?
I am still a newbie to italic nibs, but here are a few variables to think about.
- If your pen writes wetter than the person that wrote to you, the ink like will be wider. Wet can be due to the pen and/or the ink. A wet pen + a wet ink and you have a real WET writer.
- Writing speed. If you write slow, a wet ink line will get wider. I had that trouble when I first used a 1.0mm italic tip, and had to writer faster to see the difference between the vertical and horizontal lines.
- if your nib is slightly wider, the ink line will be wider. I have not measured italic nibs, but with standard nibs, I found a pretty wide variance in the width of the tips. I have measured a wide F tip that was wider than a narrow M tip. So the nib of the original writer could be closer to 0.9mm and yours could be 1.3mm (1.1 +/- 0.2mm). Without measuring the nibs with a caliper, you can't determine this.
- This could also be a case of a miss-marked nib. As was said, you could have a 1.9 nib but it is labeled 1.1.
Don't give up on the italic nib. I found that italics are fun to write with. I like how the ink line looks different without having to use a flex pen.

Another variable not mentioned is that paper surface is slightly different on each side of a sheet. One side is typically smoother than the other - sometimes that can mean one side is more absorbent.

History of Maykop
Foundation of maykop.
The history of Maykop goes back to antiquity. In the 7th-12th centuries AD, the Great Silk Road passed through the territory of Maykop and Adygea. Adyghe, as a separate ethnic group, were first mentioned in the 12th century. In 1557, after the conclusion of the marriage alliance between Ivan the Terrible and the daughter of the Kabardian prince, the Adyghe tribes officially became part of Russia.
The first mention of the Adyghe toponym “Maykop” and related “Maykop heights”,”Maykop gorge”, etc. in Russian documents dates back to 1810. In January - February 1810, a detachment under the command of General of Infantry S.A. Bulgakov made an expedition to these lands. The second time the toponym Maykop was mentioned in documents 15 years later, in the summer of 1825, during an expedition of troops under the command of General A.A. Velyaminov. In the fall of 1825, by his order, a fort was erected on the bank of the Belaya River.
On May 25, 1857, on the site of the present Maykop, a Russian fortress was laid, surrounded by a high rampart and a moat. Until 1864, the year of the end of the Caucasian War, the fortress was an important strategic point during the conquest of Circassia. After the end of the Caucasian War, it gradually lost its military significance and the active development of industry began: pottery, butter, soap, and brick production.
In 1870, Maykop was given the status of a county town. In 1888, the Assumption Cathedral was built on the territory of the town. For a long time it occupied a central place in the Orthodox life of the local residents. Then, one after another, cultural and educational institutions began to appear.
More Historical Facts…
Maykop in the late 19th - 20th centuries
In 1897, Maykop gained world fame with the discovery of the famous burial mound “Oshad”, which was the burial of a tribal leader belonging to the archaeological culture of the second half of the third millennium BC. The objects found in the mound are among the most ancient cultural monuments of the Bronze Age.
At the end of the 19th century, there were about 5,500 houses in Maykop, including 121 stone buildings, five Orthodox churches, a synagogue, two pharmacies, several schools. Industrial production was represented by 112 enterprises including 50 cooperage and 8 pottery workshops, 13 brick factories, an iron foundry, 6 water mills. Agriculture also developed, primarily animal husbandry and tobacco growing. In 1897, the population of Maykop was about 34,300 people.
In 1909, oil fields were discovered southwest of Maykop. On December 12, 1910, the first train arrived from Belorechensk to Maykop. In 1911, the construction of the water supply was completed.
On July 27, 1922, Circassian (Adyghe) Autonomous Oblast was formed. In 1936, the city of Maykop became its administrative center. In 1938, pumping of Maykop oil began through the Grozny-Tuapse pipeline to the Tuapse port and to the oil refinery. In 1939, the population of Maykop was 55,871 people.
During the Second World War, Maykop was occupied by German troops from August 9, 1942 to January 29, 1943. In 1952, the Maykop hydroelectric power station was put into operation on the Belaya River. Today, it is the most powerful hydroelectric power plant in Adygea. In 1960, the development of the Maykop gas condensate field, located 15 kilometers from the city, began. In the 1960s, the number of city residents exceeded 100 thousand.
In 1989, the population of Maykop was about 148,600 people. In 1990, the Adyghe Regional Council of People’s Deputies made a decision to transform Adyghe Autonomous Oblast into the Republic of Adygea.

Republika Adygea: fotografije, potpune informacije, zanimljiva mjesta za turiste
Republika Adygea nalazi se u podnožju Sjevernog Kavkaza. Ova mala regija zauzima dio teritorija Krasnodarskog teritorija.
Glavna stvar u regiji
Enklava je koncept primjenjiv na Republiku Adygeu. Regija Krasnodar okružuje Maikop sa svih strana i susjednih područja. Područje republike dio je južnog saveznog okruga i dio je sjevernog Kavkaza.
Republika Adygea osnovana je 1922. godine. Tada je dobila status autonomne regije na području odjela Jekaterinodar i Maykop. Godine 1928. regija je dobila status autonomne regije, a 1991. godine postaje republika.
10 područja Republike Adygea uključuju gradove, gradove i aule. U regiji postoje dvije prijestolnice: Maykop i Adygeysk. U isto vrijeme, Maykop se smatra glavnim gradom republike.
Također u Adygei ima osam okruga:
- selo Maykop;
- Koshekhablsky;
- Shovgenovsky;
- Takhtamukaysky;
- Teuchezhsky;
- Crvena garda
U republici postoje dva službena jezika: ruski i adigijski. Armenski, Ukrajinski i Kurdski jezici. Stanovništvo u regiji ne doseže čak ni pola milijuna ljudi. 63% Rusa ovdje, 25% Adygei, 4% i 2% Armenaca i Ukrajinaca.
Glavni grad Adygea
Uprava Republike Adygea
Šef regije je Kumpilov Murat Karalbievich. Guverner Maykopa - Andrei Getmanov. Republika ima svoj parlament, izvršnu upravu i pravosudni sustav. Postoje statutarni i okružni sudovi Republike Adygea.
Čelnik Adygee se zove predsjednik. Svi visoki dužnosnici ruskih republika imaju taj status.
Znamenitosti Adygee: rijeke i slapovi
Vodopad, smješten među visokim liticama i planinskim lancima, čini prekrasan kanjon. Mještani nazivaju Meshoko "komad Sjeverne Amerike" u Adygei.
Dolinu Dahu zamjenjuju blagi šumski obronci i strme obale.
Svakako posjetite ušće rijeka Belaya i Dakha.
Planine i spilje
Do njega možete doći preko Dakhovsky Bridgea.
Prirodni rezervati
Dva znamenita objekta svakako treba posjetiti svaki turista u Adygei.
Postoji oko 3 tisuće različitih vrsta cvijeća, drveća i grmlja. Svaka peta biljka je relikt, to jest živo svjedočanstvo prošlih stoljeća. Pronalaženje nečeg sličnog na drugim mjestima nije moguće. Gljive u rezervatu su također dosta - oko 2 tisuće vrsta.
Fauna Zapadnog Kavkaza je izuzetno opsežna. Postoji oko 248 vrsta ptica, mnogi sisavci, ribe, mekušci i insekti.
Povijesni spomenici
No, oko njega ima mnogo legendi!
Među zanimljivim mjestima možete istaknuti planinu Bogatyrka, kapelu Aleksandra II i dolmene - najstarije grobove, izvorne kamene spomenike.
Samostani i hramovi
Manastir Sv.
Ovdje su prikupljene sve glavne atrakcije Adygea: slapovi, dolmeni, špilje i stijene. Datiranje grobnih humaka i dolmena u selu varira od 3 do 4 tisuće godina prije Krista.
Kampovi i turistički sadržaji

The 1.1mm stub nib is a mild form of an italic nib. So strokes where you are pulling the pen in the same line as the pen is pointing will be wide (1.1 mm wide) and strokes at right angles to that will be much thinner. I got my first fountain pen today (I'm new), I chose the 1.1 nib because its the thickest on the shop I bought on.
The Lamy Safari 1.1mm italic nib is rather smooth as compared to some of the other calligraphy nibs, like Parker and Sheaffer. In a way it is more suited to regular writing. I got mine customised last weekend for free by Yukio Nagahara into a cursive italic/stub. Now it's SOMETHING!

In summary, while I enjoy the 1.5mm the most for its mid-range variation, the 1.1mm is the easiest to write with, while the 1.9mm is more situational and is best used for calligraphy. Ink can make a big difference a very wet ink can cause everything to run together and eliminate the look of variation. Angle, technique, speed all affect how a nib like this writes. Sometimes lots of practice is needed.
