HK star Jacky Cheung set for new world tour, Malaysia will be one of the stops

Hong Kong’s God Of Songs Jacky Cheung announced Thursday (March 30) that he will be embarking on a world tour.

Titled Jacky Cheung 60+ Concert Tour, the show will kickstart in Macau on June 9, 2023.

The 61-year-old singer said that he and his management came up with many ideas before deciding on naming it 60+.

“We came up with over 80 names for the tour but in the end, I settled with this simply because it reflects my age as well as the year that I was born,” said Cheung who turns 62 in July.

Cheung said this at a press conference at The Parisian in Macau on Thursday attended by The Star as well as media from the region.

Cheung last performed in Malaysia in 2018 during his A Classic Tour, where he staged three sold-out shows at Axiata Arena.

Cheung said that he is excited for the upcoming tour as it will be his 10th tour in a career that has spanned close to four decades.

During the press conference, he was shown a specially edited video of all nine of his previous concerts. When the video ended, Cheung became teary eyed.

“I’m old! I feel so touched (watching this video). I can see myself grow and improve through the years,” he said, wiping away tears.

“During the earlier concerts, I could see that my dance moves were not good, but years later, I see that I have become better. I could even do the splits,” he said.

“But now I don't think I can do the splits anymore. But I can go home and practise (before the new tour),” he said jokingly.

He promised that the upcoming concert will be different from his previous ones.

“I can’t keep performing the same songs in the same style,” he said as he broke into a few lines of his classic hit Goodbye Kiss to illustrate his point. “I must present something new,” he said adding that in every tour he strives to give something fresh to the fans.

At the press conference, the official visual for the tour was also unveiled, showing Cheung in a white double breasted jacket with a bow tie and sporting some grey on his stubble.

He commented on the photo: “I am not afraid to grow old. With this photo, I was hoping to capture a dapper side. I hope to be like George Clooney. If I am still performing at age 70, I want to look back at this photo and think to myself, ‘I did look stylish in my 60s’,” he laughed.

While A Classic Tour carried the "fire” theme, this time around, Cheung said 60+ will be “water”.

“I heard that the water element is good for me this year,” he said on why he picked water theme for the tour.

He added that it is also a tribute to his idol Bruce Lee who once said, “Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle”.

“This is a reminder for me to continue to improve in my singing and performance,” Cheung said.
