What people love about namibia tours.

I loved it! Namibia is a beautiful country and it was such a great experience to see it with this tour. The places where we stayed were lovely and the people were very nice. The only maybe advice I can give is to have a better communication between company and tour guide. I and another girl had dietary requirements and he was not aware on the first day. Because of this, he had to go get a different lunch than he had prepared already. I also expected the company to communicate with the tour guide that I had a flight on the last day, since they asked me that. He was also not aware of this. I thought he would know, so this made it a little stressful on the last night to arrange this.
A wonderful tour. The tour description is precise, and we actually went through like that. Like the most tours, you'll probably need to ask something to them, but they were responsible almost all the time, which was helpful. Accommodations are very satisfiable. Of course, they're not like 5 star hotel, but are high quality given the places we visit. I liked especially 2nd to 5th nights. As others mentioned, we need to spend lots of time driving without music, but I feel that was inevitable to visit across the country. Still, what I was amazed the most was the guide. Gideon, our guide, prepared pretty meals every time, explained well about everything, spotted animals quickly in the safari, drove with safety, and clean the bus every day. Thank you for the experience
The group makes the trip good. The CEO was good with all the information he gave on daily basis whether it was on logistics or other tour related. The driver was very care and knew not only about driving but was able to fix problems given the long distance driving. All in all the tour pretty much covered the highlights of Namibia. We enjoyed the tour and the group and recommend it to others.

Reiseverlauf:

1. Tag: Windhoek

Standard-Variante: The Elegant Desert Lodge (Mittelklasse). (Frühstück)

Superior-Variante: Sossusvlei Lodge (gehobene Mittelklasse). (Frühstück, Abendessen)

2 Nächte in Swakopmund. Ca 350 km

Standard-Variante: Hansa Hotel (Mittelklasse). (Frühstück)

Superior-Variante: Strand Hotel (gehobene Mittelklasse). (Frühstück)

5. Tag: Swakopmund

Standard-Variante: Brandberg White Lady Lodge bzw. ab Dezember Ondjamba Hills (Mittelklasse). Ca. 480 km (Frühstück)

Superior-Variante: Twyfelfontein Adventure Camp (Mittelklasse). Ca. 330 km (Frühstück, Abendessen)

7. Tag: Damaraland

Erkunden Sie das Damaraland in Eigenregie oder genießen Sie die Annehmlichkeiten Ihrer Unterkunft. (Standard-Variante: Frühstück bzw. Superior-Variante: Frühstück, Abendessen)

8. Tag: Damaraland - Etosha Nationalpark

Standard-Variante: La Rochelle Lodge (Mittelklasse). (Frühstück, Abendessen)

Superior-Variante: Etosha Mokuti Lodge (gehobene Mittelklasse) nahe Namutoni Gate. (Frühstück, Abendessen)

11. Tag: Etosha Nationalpark - Windhoek

12. Tag: Windhoek

Namibia Desert Tours

Experience the magic of one of the oldest deserts in the world

Who should go

Where to experience it, accommodations, desert tours – the iconic namibian experience.

The silence is palpable as the warm morning sun rises behind a sea of dunes colouring its surroundings in an orange and golden light – like guardians of time, the high sand dunes of the Namib tower around you, making you feel so isolated and so immersed at the same time. A lone oryx appears out of nowhere, crossing the road in a gentle trot, whirling up dust that sparkles in the sun. Namibia desert tours will take you to a world where time seems to be standing still and nothing else seems to matter than being present right here and right now.

Anyone who wants to get active in Namibia’s stunning natural surroundings

Namibia desert tours are a classic activity and one of the main highlights to enjoy on your trip. Photographers and nature lovers will appreciate the stunning landscapes, colours, and contrasts. Those seeking a break from long-driving distances can get active on hikes up and down the dunes; and young explorers can learn about chameleons, spiders, and other desert inhabitants in the biggest sandbox they’ll ever play in.

Camelthorn tree in Deadvlei

THE NAMIB – THE OLDEST DESERT IN THE WORLD

The Namib Desert is of course the best place to experience Namibia desert tours. But as you may have guessed: The Namib is not exactly small. One of the most popular areas is the Namib-Naukluft Park and specifically the Sossusvlei region with its iconic Deadvlei, Big Daddy dune and Dune 45 as well as the Sesriem Canyon. The desert around the coastal town of Swakopmund is known as Dorob National Park and famous for its adventure activities and entertaining educational tours.

You can go on a Namibia desert tour all year-round. The climate is generally warm and dry with some seasonal differences in temperatures especially at night. More than the time of the year, you should consider the time of the day when planning your desert safari: If there was ever a good day to wake up early during your holiday, this is it. Not only are the temperatures much cooler, but the sunrise and morning light in the middle of the Namib is a sight you’ll never forget. When visiting Sossusvlei, make sure to arrive at the park gate a little before sunrise as the gates open at the first light. If you want to see the actual sunrise while sitting on one of the tall dunes, you have to overnight within the boundaries of the park to get a head-start to travellers coming from outside the park.

Night sky Namibia

May to November Best for cooler temperatures and night sky photography

The dry season experiences warm temperatures throughout the day, but it is not as hot as during the rainy season. The crystal-clear skies with no cloud in sight and light pollution generally being at a minimum make it the perfect time of year for star gazing and night photography. It is also the most popular time to travel Namibia, so we advise our guests to book early, especially if you got your eyes set on a specific accommodation.

Green Season

December to April Best for a chance to experience a blooming desert

There is technically no rainy season in the desert and even using the term green season is stretching it. However, in some years Namibia experiences unusually abundant rains and even the Namib Desert gets its share. This doesn’t mean you’ll need to pack an umbrella. But it can mean that you will see patches of green grass on the dunes and pans filled with water. A very rare and exciting sight. As it can get very hot during these summer months, we recommend starting your desert tour as early as possible in the morning. Bring plenty of water to rehydrate throughout your tour.

If you’re doing a self-drive trip, you can book 4×4 desert tours with your lodge or camp and explore the Namib together with a guide. Highlights of namibia desert tours, activities: what to see and what to do on desert tours in sossusvlei.

It may not be as obvious, but desert safaris offer a variety of activities for different ages, fitness levels, and interests! There is of course the stunning morning light, and we would recommend getting up early and experience it as it is truly spectacular. If you’re somewhat fit and sure-footed you can walk up Big Daddy, the tallest dune in the Sossusvlei area at 325m – you will be rewarded for the demanding walk up with a stunning view of the Deadvlei at the foot of Big Daddy. Run, jump and tumble down the steep dune and feel like a kid again! Arriving down in the Deadvlei, you can see the famous clay pan with its ancient camel thorn trees. The dark trees, white clay pan, orange dunes and blue sky make for classic Namibia photos. If you’re looking for a true highlight as part of your desert tour, you can book a hot air balloon ride across the Namib and enjoy a champagne breakfast amongst the dunes afterwards.

Activities: what to see and what to do on desert tours in Swakopmund

Swakopmund desert tours are famous mostly for two types of activities: adventure activities and educational tours. Quad bike and fat bike tours, paragliding and sand boarding are fun and adventurous highlights and let you experience the desert in a more active way. The educational and entertaining living desert tours are a great activity as well and not exclusively for children. Together with a guide you will get to know the smallest inhabitants of the desert, among them geckos, chameleons, spiders, snakes, and lizards – also known as the “Little Five”.

Man walking across clay pan in Deadvlei

Deadvlei is one of the most famous sights on a desert tour in Namibia. One way to get here is to run down the tall Big Daddy dune.

Hot air balloon flying across desert

You can book a hot air balloon ride as part of your desert tour – a truly magical experience and highlight on your Namibia trip.

How to plan your Namibia desert tour

We recommend planning at least two nights for your Namibia desert tour.

Then enjoy an exclusive guided tour of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, named by National Geographic Travel as one of the world’s 10 most magnificent gardens. Later, stop by Boulders Beach to see the resident population of African penguins, and continue to the Cape Point lighthouse and the Cape of Good Hope, the southwesternmost point in Africa.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Meals included:, day 3 cape town.

Enjoy a day of leisure in Cape Town, choosing from a variety of optional activities. Hop on a cable car to the summit, taking in extraordinary views of the city and the Atlantic seaboard. Or explore the Cape Winelands, visiting the historical city of Stellenbosch, touring wine estates with expert guides, and indulging in a variety of tastings and pairings.

Day 4 Cape Town/Johannesburg

Fly to Johannesburg, then take a guided tour of Soweto township. Soweto was an important center of South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement and home to its leader, Nelson Mandela. Visit the Mandela House Museum and learn about this painful chapter in the country’s history. In the evening, enjoy a traditional South African dinner with your fellow travellers.

Day 5 Johannesburg/Greater Kruger Area

Set out towards Kruger National Park via the magnificent Panorama Route, one of the world’s most picturesque drives. Make stops at the dramatic Blyde River Canyon and Bourke's Luck Potholes, and take in panoramic views of the forest-covered valley from the God's Window viewpoint. Continue to our lodge near Kruger National park, savour a delicious South African Dinner in this picturesque location.

Day 6 Kruger National Park

Rise early and climb aboard an open jeep for a full-day safari in Kruger National Park—home to an extraordinary array of large mammals. Spot elephants, lions, giraffes, and perhaps elusive leopards as we explore this breathtaking wilderness of savanna and scrubland. Return to our lodge in the evening, where you can take some time to relax and enjoy the nocturnal sounds of the bush.

Day 7 Greater Kruger Area/Karongwe Private Game Reserve

Travel to the Karongwe Private Game Reserve, a pristine wildlife sanctuary located in the Greater Kruger area. Meet with a researcher from the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Cheetah Metapopulation Project—a program funded in part by National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative—and learn about efforts to protect the region’s cheetahs and other carnivores. The researcher then joins us for a wildlife-viewing excursion through the reserve.

Day 8 Karongwe Private Game Reserve

Spend the day exploring Karongwe on morning and afternoon safaris with our local guides. Search for Africa's famed "big five" as we drive through the shrublands of the bushveld. Back at camp, relax on deck or take a walk around the grounds.

Day 9 Karongwe Private Game Reserve/Johannesburg

Embark on one last safari this morning, keeping a lookout for Karongwe’s iconic inhabitants. Then head back to the city, where you’ll enjoy dinner in our lodge.

Day 10 Johannesburg/Windhoek

Fly to Windhoek and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy free time to explore the Namibian capital this afternoon.

Day 11 Windhoek/Sesriem

Set off from the Namibian capital towards Sesriem, the gateway to jaw-dropping Namib-Naukluft National Park. Drive past red-hued desertscapes, stark camel thorn trees, and dramatic curved dunes while keeping an eye out for the astonishing creatures that call these arid lands home—the oryx, springbok, jackal, hyena, and more. Settle in to our lodge and relax poolside, watching a fiery crimson sunset over the desert.

Day 12 Sesriem

Embark on a thrilling excursion into one of Africa’s largest national parks. Explore the Namib desert, the oldest desert in the world; and venture to the massive dunes at Sossusvlei and the white clay pan of Deadvlei. Capture dramatic images of dead camel thorn trees against a backdrop of orange dunes and a crisp blue sky. Then visit the Sesriem Canyon, a natural gorge carved out by the Tsauchab River over millions of years.

Day 13 Sesriem/Swakopmund

Continue by road through changing desert landscapes towards the coastal city of Swakopmund. Look out for roaming zebra, kudu, springbok, and oryx on the way, and take a break in the quirky town of Solitaire before heading into the countryside. Here, we meet a local for a 4x4 drive through the desert, learning about the survival strategies of bushmen who lived in this inhospitable area thousands of years ago. We also search for the smaller wildlife that has managed to survive here, such as snakes, geckos, spiders, and an array of insects.

Day 14 Swakopmund

Enjoy a free morning in Swakopmund, getting a taste of the town’s unique Afro-German culture; or opt for sandboarding in the Namib desert. This afternoon, take a tour of Mondesa township with a local guide, learning about its people and history. Visit the local market for an introduction to traditional foods such as wild spinach, mopane worms, and dried sardines or kapenta. Stop by an arts and crafts shop; chat with the locals; and round off the day with dinner and a performance at a cozy family-run establishment.

Day 15 Swakopmund/Damaraland

Make your way to Twyfelfontein—Namibia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site—to see some of Africa’s largest concentrations of petroglyphs. Marvel at these remarkable engravings, carved by prehistoric hunter-gatherers and depicting rhinos, elephants, and ostriches, as well as human and animal footprints. Then continue to our lodge on the heart of the Damaraland area. Enjoy some free time to swim in the pool or admire a colourful sunset from the deck.

Day 16 Damaraland/Etosha National Park Area

Enjoy a relaxed morning at our lodge and explore the rich sandstone treasure of Damaraland. In the afternoon, travel towards Etosha National Park, arguably Namibia’s most spectacular wildlife sanctuary. Settle into our lodge, located outside of the park.

Day 17 Etosha National Park Area

Spend a full day on safari in Etosha National Park, where open grasslands converge on a massive salt pan. Etosha harbours some of the largest populations of lions, elephants, and other endangered species, so keep your camera on the ready as you explore in your open vehicle. Enjoy lunch at one of the park’s rest areas, where you can also take a swim; and sit back and watch all manner of creatures—including hundreds of species of birds—flock to the nearby watering hole.

Day 18 Etosha National Park Area/Windhoek

After breakfast, visit the Cheetah Conservation Fund, a global research and education center founded by National Geographic Grantee Dr Laurie Marker. Tour the facility to learn about the important conservation and community outreach work they do to protect the world’s fastest land animal, and enjoy a talk by one of the researchers. Then head out on a drive through the grounds to meet some of the center’s rescued and rehabilitated cheetahs. Continue to Windhoek for our final evening.

Day 19 Windhoek/Victoria Falls

Catch a flight to the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, named after one of the most powerful waterfalls on Earth. Visit a nearby village and go grocery shopping in the bustling market. Then sit down with a local family for dinner, helping your hosts prepare a traditional Zimbabwean meal using the ingredients you picked out, and hear stories about local life and culture.

Day 20 Victoria Falls

Set out for a tour of magnificent Victoria Falls. Scottish explorer David Livingstone named them after Britain’s Queen Victoria, while their older, indigenous name is Mosi-oa-Tunya—“the smoke that thunders.” Opt for a scenic sunset cruise on the Zambezi River; or take a day trip to wildlife-rich Chobe National Park.

“IT MAKES US SPECIAL THAT WE MAKE YOU SPECIAL”

WHO ARE NADINE & BERND? Nadine and Bernd founded Kalidona Passion Tours in 2017. Before that, Bernd has worked as a freelance tour guide with guests for over 20 years; the demand to be able to personally design a trip with him increased steadily and we felt the need to wrap up our passion and knowledge ourselves and make it available to travelers. The creative design of each trip is a process that we go through together with you in regular contact. The planning is already a journey in itself, of a different kind! And your anticipation increases with each passing day until the time of arrival!

ANTICIPATION IS THE GREATEST JOY What to expect after contacting us?

In a very personal and absolutely customer-oriented e-mail correspondence, we find out what interests you have for a trip to Namibia – we also read your wishes between the lines!

On the basis of this individually prepared wish list, we create a travel itinerary – in further e-mail correspondence we tinker with it – until you are completely satisfied with the trip tailored to your needs.

We take into account:

– Type of accommodation – lodges, guest farms, camping – Your merits in animals, landscape and/or culture – Travel with a guide or on your own – Special occasions such as honeymoons, anniversaries – Go on safari by car and/or light aircraft – Traveling alone, as a couple, as a group – Family – the children especially in view – … and everything that is important to you!

Once the travel plan is in place, we make the bookings – your deposit secures it.

Then your anticipation remains!

„It makes us special that we make you special!”

VORFREUDE IST DIE SCHöNSTE FREUDE Was erwartet Sie, nachdem Sie uns kontaktiert haben?

Nadine and Bernd Gaerdes put their heart and soul into their work: a very personal and individually tailored trip awaits you. With precision and attention to detail, we work out your trip according to your wishes, in regular contact with you, so that you arrive in Namibia with great anticipation and end your trip with a laughing and a crying eye: laughing because the impressions were immense; crying because the farewell hurts and the heart doesn't want to let go.

A REMOTE SLICE OF DESERT WILDERNESS

Namibia is all about wild and rugged safaris, bursting with contrasting landscapes and mind-boggling scenery. But there’s one area of the country that’s worth every superlative in the dictionary and that’s the north, in particular the Kaokoland and the Skeleton Coast – and that’s exactly where this Namibia desert safari will be taking you.

You’ll begin in the Hoanib Valley region of Kaokoland, with game drives through dust-blown landscapes in search of desert giraffe and elephant and interactions with the fascinating Himba people. Then, you’ll drive from the inland valleys of the Hoanib, past the cracked pans and sandy rivers, to the ochre dunes of the Skeleton Coast. The sheer beauty of the area is striking and it’s all yours to explore for the next three nights…

**Please note that no road or air transfers are included to any of the camps. Please contact reservations for flying and/or driving quotations.

Day 1: Hoanib Valley Camp, Kaokoland

der tours namibia

Today, you’ll arrive at the stylish Hoanib Valley Camp and get settled into the safari way of life with a G&T at the campfire and a hearty dinner under the stars.

Accommodations

Hoanib Valley Camp is tucked deep into the mountainous landscapes of the Kaokoland in a sheltered cocoon overlooking the Hoanib riverbed. A joint venture including the local communities and the Giraffe Conservation Fund (GCF) , the camp is a stylish and peaceful retreat, perfect for returning to at the end of the day to wash off the dust and relax with a G&T.

Days 2 & 3: Hoanib Valley Camp, Kaokoland

der tours namibia

Spend the next two days in your vehicle, searching for desert-adapted elephant and giraffe, enjoying morning coffee in the shadow of the mountains, and visiting the traditional villages of the nomadic Himba peoples.

In Namibia, the breath-taking scenery is just as much of an attraction as the wildlife. The stark, dry landscapes of the north are an inhospitable place for animals to survive – but dig a little deeper and you’ll find an astonishing and varied assortment of wildlife hidden in these desert plains.

In the Hoanib Valley, you’ll spot desert elephant digging deep holes in the river bed and stately giraffe trimming the leaves from the trees. There’s also the chance to track black rhino and we highly recommend bringing your binos along for the ride so you don’t miss any of the smaller creatures that call the desert home.

Day 4: Drive to Shipwreck Lodge, Skeleton Coast

der tours namibia

Just when you thought you couldn’t get any more remote, you’ll drive west to the Skeleton Coast, a strange yet utterly beautiful slice of Namibian wilderness.

The ‘shipwrecked’ cabins of the aptly-named Shipwreck Lodge are scattered amongst the wind-rippled dunes of the Skeleton Coast with magnificent views over the surrounding sands. Each cabin is cozy and comfortable and the main area is equally so, with plenty of plush armchairs and squashy cushions to relax in. You might be in one of the harshest landscapes on earth, but there is no comfort to be sacrificed.

Days 5 & 6: Shipwreck Lodge, Skeleton Coast

der tours namibia

Some might say this is when the adventure really begins! Visit the seals at Mowe Colony, walk across the lunar landscapes and discover the secrets of the desert, and clamber over the whale-bones and shipwrecks on the coast.

At the Skeleton Coast, spot rare brown hyena, lion (if you’re very lucky), jackals, desert elephant and the ever-present seals of the Mowe Bay colony.

Day 7: Continue your adventure…

Additional Information

When to go & what to pack:.

This trip that can be taken at any time of year. November to January is the hot, summer season in Namibia and temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees! By April, the temperature cools down a little and by June, it can be very cold at night and in the morning, especially in the northern, desert areas. Generally speaking, the temperatures in the winter dry season (from June to September) are pleasant and you can expect lovely, sunny days and blue skies.

The weather in the desert can change at the drop of a hat and we highly recommend bringing clothes to suit all eventualities on this trip. As well as your usual safari attire, pack a light jacket, fleece and hat for the cold mornings, and some flip flops and t-shirts for the hotter days. Suncream and a hat are a must, as always!
