“I could bring any woman into this room and they’d fall in love with me.”

If you guessed that line dropped from the smirking lips of Fifty Shades Darker ‘ s Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), you’re not far off. Set decorator Carolyn Louks, part of the design team that reinvigorated the billionaire businessman’s Seattle penthouse for the steamy sequel, out Feb. 10, uses this Grey-esque sentiment to describe her inspiration for the seductive space, in the exclusive behind-the-scenes video, above.

Want to get a closer look? We can’t blame you. You can now explore all the dark corners of Christian Grey ‘s Seattle penthouse in a 360-degree virtual experience. Wander the glossy halls, find special objects that reveal more details about the man that dwells within, and even enter the red room.

Dornan, 34, suggests that, much like his character, the home has become “a bit warmer and attainable,” but the many sparkling chandeliers, double-height ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows with stunning (albeit faux) views over the city, are no less breathtaking the second time around.

Virtual reality exclusive! Go Inside Fifty Shades Darker’s masquerade ball in the 360° video below. For a fully immersive experience using VR goggles , download the LIFE VR app for iOS and Android or visit time.com/lifevr .

“It was always important to make his space extremely beautiful, extremely luxurious,” says director James Foley of the sprawling, marble-lined residence, which was built on four separate soundstages. The grand living room and Grey’s private study, explored in the video, are connected by a spectacular glass-encased wine cellar, dreamed up by production designer Nelson Coates. Beyond lies Dornan’s favorite space: the library.

“If I had huge sums of money I would want that room in my house,” says Dornan. “It’s just like a proper room that you’d want to have a nice glass of single malt. It’s a pretty cool room.”

The Seattle locations of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

Seductively mapped

When Fifty Shades of Grey hit theaters in 2015, it joined the ranks of Sleepless in Seattle , Singles , 10 Things I Hate About You , Say Anything... , and others with its Seattle location. Typical for Hollywood portrays of the Pacific Northwest, most of it was actually filmed not in Seattle, but Vancouver, British Columbia. But Seattle certainly gets her close-up in this steamy story, for better or worse. If you haven't already seen Fifty Shades fans flocking to Escala , the site of Christian Grey's penthouse, or the Fairmont Olympic , where he and Anastasia Steele spend an evening together in the Cascade Suite, just give it time.

If you're one of those looking to explore Seattle through the eyes and experiences of Mr. and Mrs. Grey (spoiler?), we've mapped out all of the local locations mentioned in the books (some in the movie, too). As for exactly where in Escala the Red Room of Pain is located, you're on your own. Literally.

Christian Grey's condo at the Escala

Christian Grey lives in the penthouse, naturally, of this downtown Seattle tower. The 31-story luxury apartment building is a perfect choice for the mysterious businessman. It's among Seattle's most sought-after condo towers and home to the most expensive Seattle condo listings on the market at any given time. The specific condo that inspired the book went on the market in September 2018 for $11.5 million.

Ana's Apartment at Pike Place Market

When she's not all tied up with Christian, Ana shares an apartment with her best friend Kate near Pike Place Market. The industrially styled three-bedroom unit is paid for by Kate's parents, and certainly not by two twenty-somethings starting their career out in Seattle.

Columbia Tower Club

The tallest skyscraper in Seattle doesn't make an appearance until Fifty Shades Darker, when Christian takes Anastasia here to eat at the Columbia Tower Club. In the book, Anastasia describes the tower by saying "It's very now and has the most head spinning views over Seattle." How a building finished in 1985 is very now, well, we're still working that out. As for the view, she might be right on that one.

Downtown Seattle is full of private-public spaces

Ralph's Grocery & Deli

In Fifty Shades Freed, a local deli and market “two blocks from Escala” is mentioned. At a quick glance, that must mean Ralph's—which, sadly, closed in 2015 and is now a CVS. Maybe this is where Christian got all of his wines and gourmet snacks.

Christian Grey's Mansion (Blue Ridge/North Beach)

In Fifty Shades Darker , Christian takes Ana to a Mediterranean-style mansion overlooking Puget Sound in the vicinity of Blue Ridge/North Beach (it's never specifically said)—a posh enclave known for its views. In the movie, they filmed at historic Casa Mia in Vancouver , but it tracks that a similar property would exist in this neighborhood.

Zig Zag Cafe

"Can’t we sneak a quick cocktail at the Zig Zag Cafe? I’ve booked us a table,” says Kate in Fifty Shades Freed , urging Ana to join her for a quick chat while Christian is out of town. The beloved establishment is located below Pike Place Market, and is known for its craft cocktails.

Fairmont Olympic Hotel

“Christian pulls into the impressive, leafy driveway of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel and parks near the front door, beside a quaint stone fountain... As I stand beside him at the reception desk, I feel utterly ridiculous.” Christian and Ana escape to the hotel's Cascade Suite, which overlooks the financial district and includes a piano.

Stewart and Boren

After a car chase, Christian and Ana hide out in a parking garage on this corner. While parked there in his Audi RB, they end up—surprise!—having sex. While there used to actually be a parking lot there, the site is now the office building Hill7 , which houses HBO, Redfin, and a WeWork location.

The Heathman Hotel (Kind of)

Technically, the Heathman Hotel in the books is the one in Portland. That's where Ana and Christian get to know one another during a photo shoot. Short of driving all the way down to Portland, this sister hotel is the closest you'll get to recreating the full Fifty Shades experience. No word on whether or not this Heathman Hotel has an elevator No. 3.

Sea-Tac International Airport

There's quite a bit of air travel in the series and so there are quite a few stops at Sea-Tac. You'd think Christian Grey could work out a deal to keep his plane at Boeing Field, but, whatever...

Seattle Penthouse That Served as Inspiration for Christian Grey's Apartment in Fifty Shades of Grey Is Now up for Sale

christian grey house tour

A true fantasy come to life. The Seattle penthouse that served as the inspiration for Christian Grey’s residence in Fifty Shades of Grey is currently on the market for a cool $11.5 million, and the space is just as dreamy as the film pictured it to be. The unit spans a grand 5,170 square feet. The listing, which is being handled by Scott Wasner of Realogics Sotheby's International Realty, is located right in the heart of downtown Seattle, with impressive walls of floor-to-ceiling windows that provide stunning views of the entire city (and Elliott Bay beyond that). The apartment is comprised of three bedrooms and three full bathrooms and one half bathroom, with plenty of open living space throughout to accentuate the grandeur of the unit. The formal dining area is adjacent to a decadent bar area, which currently features two walls of built-in glass shelves. A smaller sitting area just off the bar area has exemplary views of downtown. Elsewhere on the floor, a larger lounging area with a totally unique fireplace hedged in on two sides by panes of glass overlooks the bay, with a set of double glass doors leading out onto an outdoor balcony area.

The apartment that was the inspiration for Christian Grey's apartment.

The chef’s kitchen is cordoned off with a large center island, featuring gas stove access and space for several chairs dotting the countertop; a high-gloss wooden finish to the drawers and cabinets in the kitchen adds a pop of color to the otherwise largely white, pristine unit. A more formal seating area just off to the side of the kitchen features a cozy alcove of sorts where a grand piano (not unlike the one Christian Grey plays in the films) currently stands. The bedrooms themselves are a beauty to behold: The master suite features a separate seating area, as well as a space for a desk and writing chair. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the city, and a glass door to one side opens out onto an outdoor balcony space. The master bath features a deep soaking tub, a glass-lined steam shower, and a generous walk-in closet. Other amenities in the building include a 24-hour concierge, spa, lap pool, gym, yoga studio, movie theater, catering kitchen, and even private dining.

Take a Virtual Tour of the ‘50 Shades’ Apartment, Including the Red Room

Take a look at the lavish space in this 360-degree virtual video experience.

Just twirling around.

This Valentine’s Day, movie theaters are likely to be packed with many couples sitting through  50 Shades Darker  (also known as soft-core porn) . Their eyes will be glued to the painfully awkward interactions between Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.

Those who have already gone to see the film may have noticed a change in one aspect of the movie—no, we’re not referring to the facial hair Dornan is now sporting off screen—we’re talking about Christian Grey ’s Seattle penthouse.

Production designer Nelson Coates took over set design for this film (he wasn’t involved with the previous installment), and he told Elle Décor he “really wanted you to feel this movie…You’ll see a lot of Venetian plasters, different marbles, raw silk and hard angles that make you feel some of the danger of Christian’s background. You don’t have a lot of flat surfaces.” To see precisely what he meant by this, you can go to the aptly titled christiangreysapartment.com for the full 360-degree virtual video experience. It’s also ideal for the people who would prefer not to set foot in the theater and just want to see a cool apartment.

Still waiting to hear about Dakota Johnson's preferred room.

The marble-bedecked penthouse also contains lots of sparkly chandeliers, sleek floor-to-ceiling windows and a fireplace that is actually turned on. You might have noticed that in the first film, the fireplace was never used; this lack of illumination is supposed to symbolize the relationship between Ana and Christian. Via the 360-degree virtual video, you can roam about the living room and Christian Grey’s study, as well as a glass-encased wine cellar that is every vino connoisseur’s dream. In a video game-esque move, once you’ve managed to go through the entirety of the luxe apartment, you get the key to the red room, as some kind of prize.

Ana is sort of incorporated into the sleek space this time, and she gets more than just a drawer in Christian’s space—she gets a dressing room filled with many designer gowns, bags, shoes and so on.

But if anyone was wondering which room is favored by Christian Grey himself (well, the actor who plays him, anyway) it’s a more common space in the apartment: the library.

“If I had huge sums of money I would want that room in my house,” Jamie Dornan told People . “It’s just like a proper room that you’d want to have a nice glass of single malt. It’s a pretty cool room.”

Personally, we’d go for Ana’s closet, but we suppose the library is nice, too.

Peek inside the apartment that inspired Christian Grey's home in 'Fifty Shades'

For a tantalizing few moments earlier this week, the condo that inspired Christian Grey’s home in the Fifty Shades Trilogy was on the market for $8.8 million — and it’s every bit as dazzling as the Hollywood version.

Inside the sexy penthouse of Christian Grey

Production designer Nelson Coates has designed many film sets, but his most recent job was by far the sexiest. The designer was brought on to reimagine Christian Grey's Seattle penthouse for Fifty Shades Darker , the sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey .

christian grey house tour

Nelson Coates spoke to Elle Décor about how he set out to design a penthouse that would reflect Christians troubled past, and his developing relationship with Anastasia. "I really wanted you to feel this movie. You'll see a lot of Venetian plasters, different marbles, raw silk and hard angles that make you feel some of the danger of Christian's background. You don't have a lot of flat surfaces."

The set designer was not on the original film, but was also the designer for the final instalment, Fifty Shades Freed , as both films were shot simultaneously over 106 days on 160 sets. He told Elle Décor , "It's the first time I've done two movies at the same time. You have to keep all the details and the continuity right at the forefront of your thoughts, like, is this in the other movie? What do I need to do to change the sets to show the passage of time?"

christian grey house tour

The hero piece in the penthouse was the fireplace, Coates used it as a metaphor for Christian and Ana's relationship. "It sparks fire for the first time in this film, which represents how their steamy romance and is heating up. You see these flames, and its like the passion and the colours are taking it all to a different level," says Coates. "As the story evolves, it becomes more of a thriller, and they're also warming up to each other. So, the palettes going into a warmer direction."

House Tour: Fifty Shades of Grey – Christian Grey’s apartment

The movie Fifty Shades of Grey was one of the most anticipated flicks of 2015, and blazed into cinemas on Valentine’s Day sharp. In case you haven’t read Fifty Shades of Grey , the novel that was later adapted into a movie was rated R21 with a 20 minutes sex scene – and was completely uncut.

If you’ve read the book it’s based on, you’ve probably had the change to imagine for yourself how Mr Christian Grey’s penthouse, and his more laviciously-named Red Room of Pain might look like.

And if you have no idea what this book is, and have never heard from it, you’re too young. Stop scrolling and exit this article now.

Feed your imagination with these pictures of the original apartment, and furnishings used in the film sets.

Fifty Shades of Grey Movie – Christian Grey’s House

House Tour: Fifty Shades of Grey – Christian Grey’s apartment

Located along 1920 4th Ave, Seattle, the luxury condominium Escala Seattle was picked as Christian Grey’s home. The condominium apartment building has a befitting penthouse that soars above Seattle’s skyline.

Back in 2015 when the movie’s trailer was release, fans were seen lining up to take pictures with the Escala Seattle condominium’s front door.

The apartment also boasts super dreamy interiors.

House Tour: Fifty Shades of Grey – Christian Grey’s apartment

Unlike the movie’s set, the home’s original interior is less seductive, but equally plush.

The movie set’s home was up for rental on Airbnb for several few weeks – but not for long. The rental link was subsequently taken down nearing to the movie’s launch.

Fifty Shades of Grey Movie: A Seductive, Sensual Set

Before the movie opened in cinemas, fans and the public could have a peek of the movie set, feed their imagination and fantasies via the movie’s official website’s virtual house tour.

A virtual Christian Grey himself welcomed viewers into his home.

Mr Grey will see you now.

This was the “vanilla” master bedroom that eventually belonged to Anastasia Steele, the female protagonist of the book and movie.

Unfortunately, the Red Room of Pain was too R21 to show. If you’re an aspiring Mr Grey or Anastasia Steele, here are some real furniture pieces that were used in the movie’s Red Room of Pain that you can actually buy and adorn your own house with:

Fifty Shades of Grey Movie – Furniture from the movie set

Designed by Janet Morais, CEO of Koket, a New York City-based furniture brand inspired by the French Art de Vivre (translate: art of living). The movie Fifty Shades of Grey’s furniture came from one of Koket’s collections aptly named “Guilty Pleasures”.

These evocative furniture pieces truly embody the film’s aura of desire, passion and power.

House Tour: Fifty Shades of Grey Movie, Christian Grey’s Apartment. Koket Madamoiselle Armoire cabinet.

Koket Mademoiselle Armoire Cabinet

Koket’s Mademoiselle Armoire cabinet was heavily inspired by the French decorative arts – evident from the filigree metal butterflies centered on the doors. The door’s backing is upholstered in your choice of a decadent fabric, and the entire base, top, frame, and all handles are covered in high gloss gold leaves and polished brass.

All of these pieces were one-of-a-kind and handcrafted.

Koket Guilt Mirror A hint of hardness and edginess.

A decorative mirror framed with sculptured curves and spikes made from high-gloss hammered pique brass, this is a massive decor piece measuring 187cm wide x 10cm depth x 187cm height.

There is a slightly smaller iteration called Guilt II Mirror measuring 110cm x 10cm x 110cm instead.

This is a fully upholstered pleated sofa that comes with any fabric upholstery of your choice, flanked by a textured and hammered aged brass structure that runs around the sofa. The entire sofa measures 154cm wide x 73cm deep x 72cm height, and weighs a total of 56kg.

The design was meant to be provocative, and comes with a matching armchair called the Desire Chair.

Koket Hypnotic II Chandelier Graceful painted wood paired with intricate golden spirals.

The Hypnotic II chandelier is a sight to behold – dazzling intricate with coils, curves, spirals and bends that never seem to end, this chandelier commands your attention and ushers you into a trance. The chandelier is made of polished brass, and black lacquered wood – all in high gloss.

It measures 85cm wide x 85cm depth x 56cm height, and weighs a solid 18kg.

There is also an accompanying Hypnotic Chandelier, and a Hypnotic Sconce wall light.

Koket Exotica Desk

The Exotica desk was designed with curves, contrast, brass knobs, and tassels for a bold and seductive look. Its surface is covered in a python textile, complete with high gloss brass hardware, and jewel tassels. The interiors, where Mr Grey stored his objects of desire, were completely coated in high gloss gold powdered finish.

This desk measures 166cm wide x 73cm deep x 79cm height and weighs 72kg.

Thanks to the modern marvels of technology, " Fifty Shades of Grey " fans can explore the apartment of Christian Grey ahead of the film's release in two weeks.

Universal Pictures has created an online portal to his luxury Seattle penthouse that allows users to take a 360-degree tour.

Once inside, users can discover new objects, rooms, and arousing recipes. Though proceed with caution - you must sign a nondisclosure agreement first.

To some fans disappointment, the Red Room is locked. It seems the much anticipated room is a reveal left to the big screens come Valentine's Day.

That Time I Designed... Christian Grey's Penthouse For "Fifty Shades Darker"

Production designer Nelson Coates set out to recreate a set that would reflect Christian's troubled past, his warming relationship with Anastasia and the aesthetic of the Pacific Northwest.

Headshot of Kelsey Kloss

Passion. Danger. Sensuousness.

Still, the week of the film’s release, these are the words production designer Nelson Coates , who oversaw the set design of the film, uses to describe not Christian Grey, but rather his Seattle penthouse. A fireplace is used to spark flames for the first time, a staircase has a jagged mezzanine that hints at danger, and the entire space is filled with items swelling with texture.

fifty shades darker

“I really wanted you to feel this movie,” says Coates. “You’ll see a lot of Venetian plasters, different marbles, raw silk and hard angles that make you feel some of the danger of Christian's background. You don’t have a lot of flat surfaces.”

Coates, who has designed an expansive lineup of film sets, including those for “The Last Song” and “The Proposal,” was not involved in the first “Fifty Shades of Grey” film. He was brought on to reimagine the first film’s sets for both “Fifty Shades Darker” and “ Fifty Shades Freed ” (premiering in 2018), which were shot simultaneously over 106 days and on 160 sets.

“It’s the first time I’ve done two movies at the same time,” Coates says. “You have to keep all the details and the continuity right at the forefront of your thoughts, like, ‘Is this in the other movie? What do I need to do to change the sets to show the passage of time?”

fifty shades darker

Even between "Fifty Shades of Grey" and “Fifty Shades Darker,” the passage of time in the penthouse is apparent. Coates wanted to make the interior's aesthetic in this film warmer , sexier and more romantic as Christian and Anastasia’s own relationship warmed up.

For instance, in the first film, you may have noticed a fireplace that was never used. In “Fifty Shades Darker,” the fireplace is far larger and actually burns a fire — a metaphor for Christian and Anastasia’s changing relationship.

“You see these flames, and it’s like the passion and the colors are taking it all to a different level,” says Coates. “As the story evolves, it becomes more of a thriller, and they’re also warming up to each other. So, the palette’s going into a warmer direction.”

It's also the first time Anastasia has been incorporated into the apartment in a tangible way. In "Fifty Shades Darker," she gets her very own dressing room — and it's all of our dream closet goals come true.

fifty shades darker

"I thought it should rival Christian's closet, but with softer and more neutral tones to it, so that the clothes become the star," says Coates. "I also wanted to give her a dressing screen and sitting area so she could do her hair or makeup. Kind of like, 'This is my inner sanctum.'"

fifty shades darker

Still, passion and romance aside, the rest of the interiors needed to reflect what a 29-year-old billionaire would actually collect, prefer and use in his spaces. Take, for example, the gym on the second floor or the luxurious walls of wine storage.

“We wanted to offer something to the guys who go with the girls to watch this movie," says Coates. "So they could be like, ‘Wow! I really want that! I’d love a space just like this!’”

However, this presented the challenge of creating high-end looks on a budget. To create the large marble floor in Christian’s apartment, for instance, the team used a Formica product that had finishing on the sides and resembles marble on film.

fifty shades darker

Coates and his team made several architectural changes in the space in this film, some of which allude to Christian’s troubled childhood. The staircase in the penthouse is brand new and meant to emit an air of complexity, resembling a piece of a Jenga game or even a sculptural piece of DNA. It’s also a bit dangerous: The minimal railing is intentional. Complexity and danger — two things the staircase shares with the film’s main character.

Throughout the home, you’ll notice imagery alluding to women through artwork and sculptures, including works from bronze sculptor Richard MacDonald . It was also important for the art to truly reflect the Pacific Northwest, although the actual set was located in Vancouver. Coates approached this by filling Christian’s apartment with art exclusively from artists who work either in Seattle or elsewhere along the Pacific coast.

“I love for a movie to have a sense of place, where we can’t be anywhere else than where it’s supposed to be,” says Coates. “Things that are so specific to a locale give strength to a story, and make it more believable.”

As for the red room? You’ll have to watch the film to get a glimpse of that. We can guess, however, it’ll also exude passion, danger and sensuousness — times fifty.

The virtual tour of Christian Grey’s penthouse is the best version of Fifty Shades of Grey

Christian Grey has 47 fewer facets than the title of the insanely-popular-book-cum-insanely-popular-movie Fifty Shades of Grey suggests. He’s a billionaire. He spends that money on all sorts of fancy objects. He claims to only enjoy kinky sex. That’s it. Move along, folks, there’s nothing to see here.

Sam Taylor-Johnson’s film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey cannot overcome Grey’s unrelenting beigeness; it is a dull movie about dull people having dull sex. In the early going, Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan: bored, possibly constipated) informs Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson: constantly biting her lip) that he “exercise[s] control in all thing.” He wants her to submit to his dominant ways. She wants a more traditional—and less abusive—romance. You can probably see where this is going. Insofar as Fifty Shades of Grey is a movie about reconciling sexual incompatibilities, it is more Freudian than it is kinky: Grey is anal retentive; Steele is orally fixated.

Supporting characters tend to steal the show in horrible movies. So it is with Fifty Shades of Grey , where Christian Grey’s penthouse is the most interesting part of the film. Freed from the obligation of reciting E.L. James’ turgid prose, the penthouse can effectively convey the story’s imbalances of power and wealth. Indeed, the best version of Fifty Shades of Grey is the virtual tour of chez Grey that Focus Features produced as a tie-in with the movie.

christian grey house tour

You enter Grey’s apartment by a private elevator. It feels more like an airlock. In order to leave the elevator, you have to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which feels rather coercive. I sign it and enter the home. (Christian, if you’re reading this, sue me.)

The Grey apartment is an intimidating space. You exit the elevator and step down into sunken living room. The ceilings are double-height. You can imagine your footsteps on his polished marble floors echoing through the cavernous open-plan living area. There’s a stairway–it looks like a cheap, domestic rip-off of Zaha Hadid’s Maxxi–leading to the upper level. From the lower floor, you can’t see what lies upstairs. The message here is clear: You are very small part of Christian Grey’s very big world.

You navigate this walkthrough by clicking arrows on the floor. They lead to strategically-chosen locations: rooms that show off the penthouse’s best angles. In any of these rooms you can click buttons that look not entirely unlike Viagra pills to learn about the objects in the Grey house. This navigation system gives the illusion of freedom but really you can only go where Mr. Grey wants you to go and see what he wants to see. The apartment initially appeals to you with its riches but comes to feel like a jail cell. You have a 360-degree view but your feet are chained to the ground.

christian grey house tour

Here are some details that are revealed by clicking the Viagra-buttons dotting the virtual tour: Christian Grey owns many Audis, Michael Joo’s “Improved Rack Moose #3” hangs in his living room, he owns a sculpture by Gerda Lattey and Farik Aldin entitled “Bronze Sculpture,” he keeps Vintage Brut Rosé and Sancerre in his wine fridge, he gets fresh flowers delivered every three days, and Gary Aylward’s “Inside the Reef” hangs over his bed. What does this accretion of luxury goods mean? Not much. Christian Grey is a rich man who owns many expensive things because he is rich. All of the objects in Christian Grey’s world are in their proper place and so are you, his little visitor.

It is unlikely that Focus Features intended to create a virtual tour that doubled-down on all the things that make Fifty Shades of Grey creepy. But the conventions and mechanics of the real estate tour make the oppressive qualities of the film’s spaces more apparent. In Taylor-Johnson’s film, the camera attempts to find some sort of intimacy in these spaces. In the virtual tour, they are empty and the camera you operate can take in the vast expanse you come up against.

There is only one room that you cannot access in this virtual tour: the Red (bondage) Room. The Red Room appears on the blueprint but, if you want to see it, you have to go see the film. But you shouldn’t see Fifty Shades of Grey and, once you’ve completed the virtual tour of Christian Grey’s apartment, you don’t need to. Having been dominated and put in your place by these bland spaces, you already know what would happen in the Red Room.

It's the thought that counts

Over a hundred years ago, on a corner in a small town at the edge of The Empire, a large Arts and Crafts home was built. After it had aged for seventy years to an architectural ripeness it became The Big Haus, and as such, a small part of the Kingdom of God and His Christ. From the beginning this Haus has been devoted to the pursuit of Peace in the ultimate virtues that Christianity provides to life and mind. In that Peace it is a fine place to rest, and while at rest, to think about resting. There you can lay your hands on this Peace, understand it, and smile back at it when it smiles at you. Heck, you can see it from the front porch, taste it at dinner, and pursue it, with a more mental hunger, across the landscape of some conversation.

So, if you want insight, and if you can get here (that isn’t so easy), come by for a visit. You can join us for a weekend, a week, or a semester or two. We’ll talk about stuff. Stuff we’ve thought long and hard about. Because, as you know from the headline, and you’ll know after you leave, at The Big Haus, it’s the thought that counts.

Evan, Leslie, & Family

Evan Wilson was born in 1954 and is the second son of Jim and Bessie Wilson. His childhood in Annapolis, Maryland was spent in a home devoted to the Kingdom of Heaven—a home where the Scriptures were the authority for attitudes and actions. He never had reason to doubt the truth of the Gospel, though he fought it off until he was eight years old when the pressure of his sins drove him to his knees in his bedroom.

Those early years were churched but never churchy. The Wilson home was regularly filled with Naval Academy midshipmen or the beatniks of St. John's College. This provided Evan a strong example of the benefits of Christian hospitality centered on the Word of God and wise Christian counsel.

In 1968 the Wilson family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan to open an evangelistic bookstore for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. The pattern of their home was still open, this time to the students of the University of Michigan, both believers and unbelievers. Evan had an opportunity to witness his parents patiently extending themselves to those in need. After three years Evan's parents moved to Moscow, Idaho to open evangelistic bookstores at the University of Idaho and the neighboring Washington State University. Evan enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at a base in southern California. It was there that he met Leslie Rye.

Leslie Rye was born in 1957 and was raised in the desert of the Imperial Valley in southern California. Her home was a clean, orderly place, which, like that of Evan's family, was given to much hospitality. She was well loved by her parents. The family was very stable, but had no religious affiliation.

Early in high school Leslie claimed to be an atheist, like her father. She didn't think she needed to be religious in order to be good, and she truly valued being good. In her junior year she expressed some concern about a family member's behavior to a friend. The friend invited her to church. Leslie attended the church for a few weeks, and after one evening service she went forward during the altar call, but knew nothing about the gospel. In the weeks that followed she attended the church's New Members Class, where the gospel was laid out and fully explained. During that time Leslie came to understand that she was a sinner in need of forgiveness, and gave her life to the Lord one night - on her own in her room.

About a year and a half later she started attending Bible studies at the Navy Base, led by Evan Wilson.

In 1977 Evan was honorably discharged and moved back to Moscow to attend the University of Idaho as a Fine Arts major. He encouraged Leslie to consider changing schools (which she did) and they were engaged in November of '77. During the summer after his first year of college Evan and Leslie got married and moved into a small two bedroom house. Almost immediately they began extending hospitality, featuring Leslie's talents as a hostess and cook, and Evan's desire to minister to others in conversation.

After that first year of marriage Leslie graduated from the University with a degree in Education. Another year found Evan and Leslie thinking aggressively about building on their desire to minister out of their home. The Lord provided one of the biggest houses in town, which was far beyond their economic resources, and they moved into the Big Haus in 1980 with their first nine residents. In 1981, after a year in the Haus, Evan, now a History major, graduated.

Since that day they have raised four children—Davis, Michal, Graeme, and Gunn—all walking with the Lord, with over 300 college and career Haus residents passing through and looking on.

THE LORD YAHWEH, the "I Am", the Almighty God, maker of Heaven and Earth, the Most High and the Most Holy, He exists and He rewards those who seek Him.

Every man has [You have] sinned against this Holy God.

This God will judge every man [you] justly for what he has [you have] done.

What every man has [you have] done deserves destruction.

Man [You] can do nothing to save himself [yourself] from the wrath of the Almighty.

God, out of His love and mercy in accordance with what He had spoken through His prophets in the Scriptures, sent (as Father) Himself (as Son) to be born in the likeness of man, Jesus the Christ, who, after leading a sinless and holy life, was put to death on a cross as a sacrifice for man's [your] sin.

But Death, also in accordance with the Scriptures, could not hold the Christ, and after three days Jesus rose from the dead. After appearing to many, He ascended into Heaven.

Any who [If you] believe these things, and turning from their [your] sins, call on the Name of the Lord Jesus for forgiveness, God will not destroy and will give, in this World, a new nature by His Holy Spirit, and in the next, by the resurrection of the dead, Eternal Life.

AMEN & AMEN

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

We are thankful for your consideration of the Big Haus for a Christian living environment. Since 1980, we have tried to be a spiritual and practical service to the saints who both work and go to school in Moscow, Idaho. As the decades have gone by, we have referred to a broad base of standards we hold to as “our understandings”. We inform every resident of them as they move in, but everyone’s memory is not what it should be. Sometimes we forget to bring up a topic during an interview, and sometimes a resident fails to listen. We needed to have it all summed up and written down so that everyone—from parents or potential residents to forgetful long termers—could refer to an objective standard.

Hence this handbook.

We have guest rooms available when we do not have a seminar scheduled. Please feel free to contact us regarding availability. While we don't charge for guests we do accept donations. Guest visits have allowed us to enjoy getting to know a broader array of people. We cannot promise that we would be entirely available for interacting during your stay, but we can let you know our schedule at a time closer to the date of your planned visit. We inform our guests what meals will be available during their stay, and for planning purposes, we ask that our guests let us know which of those meals they will attend. Given our lack of charging for Guests, we are presuming this is a "weekend" visit. If you wish to stay longer you must make arrangements with us that will include certain costs.

Church of St. Nicholas “Podkopai” (“Dig Under”)

Church of St. Nicholas “Podkopai” (“Dig Under”)

First mentioned in the late 15th century, the name of this church has gone down in history as the Church of St. Nicholas “Dig Under”. It is not certain how it got this name, but a legend exists of a merchant who had a strong veneration for St. Nicholas but then lost all his wealth. After the merchant prayed fervently, the saint appeared to him in a dream and told him to dig under the church wall, take the covering inlaid with precious stones from his revered icon, sell it, and use the money to start trading again. When his wealth returned, he was to have a covering made like the old one for the icon. The merchant did as he was told, and replaced the covering to the amazement of the parishioners, who passed down the story. In the 1930s the church was closed and turned into a plastic factory. It was returned to the Church in 1991, and recently added to the list of national monuments for preservation. Restoration work, as you can see by the photograph, has not yet been completed.
