With in-person tours still canceled, prospective students visit BU’s campus on their own

prospective family tours boston university

In lieu of in-person, official campus tours, Boston University is offering prospective students and families other ways to get a feel for Commonwealth Avenue.

Campus is open to self-guided tours, and a mobile walking tour is provided through the VisiTOUR app. The walking tour also leads visitors to an online Back2BU guide on how to wear a mask in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

Along with the guided walking tour, the University is offering an interactive virtual tour, an option to register for a live virtual tour with student ambassadors and various virtual events for students to get to know BU and the campus.

“However, BU continues to maintain strict COVID protocols,” the website states, “which means that visitors are not permitted inside our buildings and, strict mask wearing and social distancing protocols are being followed.”

Sally Thoden, an admitted student in the College of Arts and Sciences from Austin, Texas, said she visited the campus in September to ensure that BU was the right choice for her.

“Although there were virtual tours and stuff like that,” Thoden said, “I just really wanted to make sure I was making the right decision, because it is a pretty big decision.”

Thoden was recruited by the BU Rowing Team and said she was given a map by her coach to explore campus and do a self-guided tour.

“I thought that was super helpful because I feel like BU’s campus is kind of tucked in,” she said. “I feel like without that map, I definitely would not have known what everything was and I think it’d be a lot more confusing.”

Thoden said she also took note of the COVID-19 safety displayed on campus while she was visiting.

“Everyone was wearing masks and everything,” she said, “so I definitely felt really safe.”

Cameron Howard, an admitted student in CAS from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, said he is traveling to Boston next week to visit campus and decide whether he will attend BU.

“I’ve been to Boston before but I’ve never been to BU,” Howard said. “I wanted to see the campus.”

Howard said he has completed the virtual tour and used the online resources, but they don’t provide the same experience as being on campus.

“I think seeing the campus is totally different,” Howard said. “You can really get a better feel versus just looking at it online.”

He added he was particularly reassured by BU’s recent announcement of compulsory COVID-19 vaccinations for students next year.

“I feel really safe I think, especially because we just got the email a few days ago that they’re requiring all students be vaccinated for Fall,” Howard said. “I think that makes it a lot easier to go and feel safer.”

CAS sophomore Ruby Price works at the green badge station in the George Sherman Union and said she has had to refuse touring families who have tried to come into the building.

“We’ve had to turn them away quite a few times,” Price said. “I feel bad because we want them to be able to tour the campus, but also we have to enforce the regulations.”

However, Price noted the families she’s seen have mostly been understanding and followed the guidelines.

“Most of them are pretty respectful about it,” Price said. “I don’t think it’s too big of a concern, personally.”

CAS freshman Jaedin Guldenstern said she understands why students feel the need to visit campus in-person.

“They just want some stability and knowing where they’re going next,” Guldenstern said, “so I can really empathize with that.”

As long as families are following COVID-19 guidelines, they should come to campus to make a more informed decision about where to attend college, Guldenstern added.

“I just would hope and ask and I have seen it so far,” she said, “that they’re being safe about it and respectful of us.”

The University could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.

How to Plan a Successful Campus Tour of Boston’s Top Colleges

Each year, we partner with schools and community organizations around Massachusetts to plan campus tours for their students. They receive quality transportation, professional drivers, and attentive customer service.

This year, we’ve gone one step further to make your trip run even smoother. We talked to five of Boston ’s top colleges to learn everything there is to know about group tours on their campuses.

Boston University

Overlooking the Charles River, Boston University’s campus is home to nearly 18,000 students. With a student to faculty ratio of 10-to-1, the school offers students a highly-personalized education.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person on-campus tours are suspended. For future reference, the university welcomes groups of 10 to 50 students to schedule a tour by filling out their request form or by calling admissions at 617-353-2300 . Group tours are conducted by a current BU student and are available for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors only. Schedule your visit at least three weeks in advance to ensure availability.

Your bus driver can drop students off outside the visitor’s center at 233 Bay State Road. Though the university doesn’t have guest bus parking on campus, your driver can park off-campus and meet you back at the visitor center at the end of the tour.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge to learn about its prestigious academic programs, admissions process, and campus life. Students who are interested in science, engineering, and research will especially benefit from visiting their campus.

On-campus tours are suspended due to the global pandemic, but you can plan and schedule a self-guided tour for your group. For future reference, when you book a visit, your students will receive a 75-minute tour which includes the Stratton Student Center, Zesiger Athletic Center, and Kresge Auditorium.

MIT will waive the tour fees it’s booked by a teacher or school counselor. There are specific times of the year when campus visits can not be accommodated, so read their guidelines carefully before requesting a date.

At 84 Massachusetts Avenue, your driver can safely let students off the bus. When you partner with a company like GOGO Charters , you won’t have to worry about finding parking. We’ll ensure that your driver knows where to park so that you can focus on your upcoming trip.

Harvard University

historic building on harvard university campus

Harvard is one of the top Ivy League schools in the country and typically has tours available for groups from 15 to 100 participants. However, due to the global pandemic, all public and private campus tours are suspended.

For future reference, you can schedule a tour in advance through the Harvard University Visitor Center. Once you arrive in Cambridge, ask your driver to drop students off at Mt. Auburn Street between Holyoke Street and Plympton Street. Tours begin at the Harvard Information Center and are led by current students.

Your guide will use their personal experience at Harvard to teach students what to expect. They’ll also be available to answer questions about housing, admissions, financial aid, extracurricular activities, and more.

Northeastern University

panoramic view of buildings on northeastern university in boston

Students who attend Northeastern University have a unique opportunity to learn from real-world experiences. Over 90% of undergraduates complete co-op programs during their four years at the university.

High school and college transfer students can book group tours through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Request a tour at least two weeks in advance, and contact the school if your group has over 40 participants.

The tour begins at the Visitor’s Center at 40 Leon Street, and your driver can drop students off on Forsyth Street near Ruggles Station.

Boston College

Groups of 10 or more participants can tour Boston College’s campus to see its beautiful Gothic architecture and learn more about the school. Schedule your tour two weeks ahead of time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

The Eagle Eye Campus Visit, which lasts two hours, includes an information session and campus tour. A current student will show participants around the school and answer any questions they may have.

The school’s staff suggests that buses unload on their lower campus, which is a short walk from their office at 140 Commonwealth Avenue. Your driver may park at Boston College’s Newton campus a mile away and return for pickup after the tour.

No matter the size of your student group , we can easily accommodate you with a modern, reliable coach. Schedule your bus transportation today by calling our reservation specialists at 1-855-826-6770 .

Padres at Red Sox picks and predictions

Red Sox 6, Padres 4

BET RED SOX (-158) .

The Red Sox have been on fire as of late and have won 4 straight starts by Pivetta and have won 6 of his last 8 starts. Boston is 5-3 in its last 8 home games and won 2 of 3 in Fenway against the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies among its last 3 home series.

While the Padres have won 7 of their last 8 games, they are just 1-9 in their last 10 road games. San Diego is 3-7 in Vasquez’s starts this season as well. Considering those trends, despite the juice, take RED SOX (-158) .

Run line/Against the spread

The Padres have strung together wins as of late, so they should be able to keep this game close. Despite consistently winning when Pivetta starts, Boston has won by a single run in 3 of the team’s 7 victories with him on the mound.

Avoid the moneyline and back the suggested moneyline play.

BET OVER 9.5 (-108) .

The Padres have gone Over in 7 straight games and have scored at least 7 runs in 3 straight games. They are 45-38-1 O/U on the season and have gone Over in Vasquez’s last 2 starts.

The Red Sox have gone Over in 3 straight and are 7-3 O/U in their last 10. Boston has scored at least 4 in 9 of its last 10 and at least 7 in 6 of those. Considering those trends, back OVER 9.5 (-108) .
