And of course, no travel outfit would be complete without a fashionable (and functional!) carry-on bag on your arm or atop your luggage . This bag should house all your essentials and still level up your airport outfit. Keep reading for some of the best travel and airport outfit ideas for your next trip.

Planning a vacation in 2024 and need to know what to wear while traveling? I’ve got you covered with 17+ comfy airport outfits and travel outfits that are the perfect blend of chic and comfy, in any season!

Creating Chic Travel Outfits

Who doesn’t love going on vacation and traveling to a new destination? I know I definitely do!

But while I love exploring new places, I also know that travel days can be pretty hectic! It’s important to be prepared with comfortable outfits you can easily spend the day in while navigating airports or sitting in rental cars.

If you’re in need of fashionable and functional travel outfits, you’ll love my looks below. I have airport outfits for every style and season, so whether you’re traveling to a tropical paradise or a winter wonderland, you’ll be set!

denim jacket + a puffer vest

A woman at the airport wearing black leggings, a white tee, a blue denim jacket, and a black puffer vest with adidas samba sneakers and a black crossbody bag

get the look:

Layers are a must if you’re traveling in the fall or winter! I love starting my travel ensemble with basics like my Lululemon Align leggings and oversized Jil Sander tee (more affordable option here ) , then layering as needed.

Above, I added my Madewell denim jacket and Quince puffer vest to keep me warm and cozy both on and off the plane!

leggings+ a bomber jacket

A woman at the airport wearing black leggings, a white graphic tee, a grey jacket, and black sneakers

An oversized tee and black leggings are the start of my airport outfit here as well, but this time, I’m staying warm with a sleek and modern bomber jacket .

I recommend choosing an outfit like this when it’s a little warmer out. The jacket is perfect for staying warm in a cold airport but can easily be removed as needed. And, these New Balance 574 sneakers are so comfortable!

linen pants + a denim jacket

A woman at the airport wearing black linen pants, a white tee, a denim jacket, white and grey sneakers, with a tan leather crossbody

Drawstring linen pants are an absolute essential in my spring and summer wardrobe! They are so comfortable and easy to wear during a travel day, and the denim jacket is stylish and adds a layer of warmth – airplane AC is always so intense!

I love this Quince phone crossbody  for convenience (it fits a passport too) . And I always recommend wearing sneakers or other comfy footwear when traveling – bonus points if your shoes can be easily slipped off and on when going through security!

wool coat + Ugg slippers

A woman at the airport wearing black leggings, a grey crewneck sweatshirt, a brown wool coat, and Ugg slippers

Looking for the ultimate cozy travel outfit?

Leggings and Ugg Tasman slippers are definitely my go-to for comfort in the cooler months (the Uggs have been selling out constantly, so here’s a perfect high-quality Tasman dupe ) . And a long wool camel coat is not only chic but also perfect for layering – it doubles as a blanket on the plane!

I also love this long knitted coatigan from Mango as a great travel piece.

travel in neutrals

A woman at the airport wearing black linen pants and a white tee with a black sweater draped over her shoulders, grey and white sneakers, and a black crossbody bag

I love simple, neutral outfits because they always look effortless and stylish. A plain white tee and black linen drawstring pants are ultra-comfy but still have a chic, put-together aesthetic.

This outfit is great for summer traveling, but I always bring a sweater with me so I don’t get too cold on the plane.

bomber jacket + joggers

A woman at the airport wearing black joggers, a grey crewneck sweatshirt, a great jacket, white and grey sneakers, with a baseball cap and a black crossbody bag

This is another cold-weather travel outfit that I love! Lululemon fleece joggers and a crewneck sweatshirt are great base layers and the bomber jacket adds an extra cozy feel.

And if you ask me, this ensemble has a laid-back, sporty feel, making adidas Samba sneakers and a baseball cap the perfect finishing touch!

More Comfy Airport Outfits

I’ve stalked my favorite fashion influencer and have found even more comfy travel airports that are modern and chic. I think you’ll love them too!

trench coat + trousers

A woman ready to go to the airport wearing black pants, a classic trench coat, and converse sneakers

You don’t have to be traveling to France to dress like a Parisian while on vacation!

A trench coat is a classic piece in French fashion, and with good reason. It’s lightweight, versatile, and oh-so chic – what more could you want for an airport outfit?

I recommend using a trench coat to layer over other pieces when traveling in cold weather or to stay dry while out and about on rainy days. A trench coat can also be used for a modern and refined look, making it perfect for any occasion!

matching sweat set

A woman ready for the airport wearing a grey matching sweat suit set, a trench coat, and trainers

I think a matching sweatsuit set makes a perfect travel outfit because it’s comfortable and versatile. You can wear a sweatsuit set to stay warm while traveling in the fall or winter, and you can wear it as is or add layers if needed.

And I love that you can double up on a matching set by using it to build other outfits during your trip.

try (comfortable) denim

A woman at the airport with ripped blue jeans, white sneakers, and a white sweater

Jeans are a must to bring along when traveling, and you can’t go wrong wearing it as part of your airport outfit, so long as your jeans are comfortable and not too snug !

One thing I love about jeans is how easy they are to care for. Jeans can be worn days in a row before needing to be washed (especially in cold weather) , so being a low-maintenance and versatile piece makes them great for traveling in my opinion.

cozy shearling coat

A woman holding luggage wearing black leggings and a white coat with black Chanel boots and a pink beanie

A warm coat will keep you ultra-comfy as you fly. And if you ask me, a shearling coat or shacket is a travel piece you can’t go wrong with! This piece will keep you warm even on the coldest days, and it’s also fashionable and versatile enough to wear with so many outfits.

Such a chic and neutral-toned coat is a must if you’re traveling to or from somewhere chilly. And this coat will look great while keeping you cozy everywhere from the airplane to local cafes to must-see landmarks!

leggings + a denim jacket

A woman with luggage wearing black leggings and a grey hoodie with an oversized denim jacket and white sneakers

If you want to know one of the best things to wear while traveling, look no further than a classic pair of leggings.

Comfortable and stretchy leggings are a perfect piece to wear, whether you’ll be walking through an airport or sitting on a plane. I suggest searching for a pair made of breathable material and one with pockets for easy access to your phone and other essentials.

a long, cozy coat

A woman at the airport with olive green leggings, sweater, and baseball cap with a long white coat and white trainers

If you plan on traveling in the fall or winter ( or maybe your destination will have chilly weather ), bringing a coat is a no-brainer. And I think a long coat like this is an easy way to add a stylish and modern aesthetic to your outfits.

A piece like this will keep you nice and cozy during a busy day of traveling, and you’re sure to use it when trying local cuisine or attending a wine tasting. I love that it adds an elegant touch to a simple outfit like this, so you know you can pair this with any look, both casual and refined.

What should I wear to an airport in the summertime?

If you’ll be spending time at the airport in the summer, you will want an outfit that is both comfortable and cool. Choose lightweight and breathable pieces such as:

  • Short-sleeved tee or tank top
  • Lightweight leggings
  • Flowy dress
  • Midi or  maxi skirt
  • Cotton button-up shirt
  • Linen blazer
  • Sandals  or sneakers

Comfy Airport Outfits for Summer

There are tons of cute airport outfits that are perfect for hot summer days. I’ve got my favorite comfy airport outfits for summer below, so you don’t have to sweat it when packing or traveling!

a maxi dress

A woman at the airport with a flowing black floral maxi dress and chunky white sneakers

What would the summer be without gorgeous flowy dresses to spend your days in? This breezy piece will keep you comfy and cool throughout your day, and it will definitely be comfortable to wear while sitting on a plane.

And in my opinion, a dress is a great piece to bring along on your vacation. You can style it casually as you travel or when checking out local spots at your destination, and it can easily be transformed into a chic date night look with a high-end handbag and some gold-toned jewelry.

linen trousers + a tank

A woman holding luggage wearing pleated white pants, a striped tank top, and a sweater tied over her shoulders

Next on the list of comfy airport outfits for summer are flowy, linen pants. These are another fantastic travel piece you can wear for any occasion, from laid-back to classy and refined. So whether you plan on exploring tourist hot spots or dining on gourmet cuisine, these pants will fit into your vacation looks effortlessly.

I also think that crisp light-colored pants are perfect for a summer outfit, and the relaxed fit also makes them comfy enough for long travel days. They’ll fit easily into your luggage, and these lightweight trousers will definitely be a staple in your vacation wardrobe.

oversized blazer + bike shorts

A woman with luggage wearing black running shorts, a white crop top, a camel blazer, and white trainers

I know I’m not the only one who loves layering an oversized blazer over any outfit!

Adding a blazer to an outfit is a great way to elevate your look when it comes to comfy airport outfits for summer. A blazer instantly adds a stylish and modern vibe to any ensemble, so it’s a perfect styling piece to bring while traveling.

oversized button-up

A woman holding luggage wearing black leggings and a black crop top with a white button-up and black sandals

Cotton button-up shirts are a great way to feel comfortable and look chic in the summer. I suggest wearing this versatile piece over a crop top and black leggings, like in the outfit above, or keep it buttoned and tied in the front for a cute and casual aesthetic.

A button-up shirt is also another perfectly versatile piece for an airport outfit. I love that you can wear it out for a fancy dinner, pair it with jeans for a casual look, or layer it over a bikini during a tropical vacation.

matching skirt + tank

A woman with a dark tan maxi skirt, matching top, a white blazer, and white sandals at the airport

Go for maximum comfort and style in a stretchy, ribbed midi skirt and a matching top! A skirt and top set like this are lightweight and breezy but still offer plenty of coverage while traveling.

You’ll also have a perfect piece to wear for anything from sightseeing to a night out. And, my favorite thing about a matching set is that it can be kept together or mixed and matched with other pieces in your travel wardrobe. So you’ll have plenty of outfit options to choose from while on vacation.

bike shorts + hoodie

A woman with pink running shorts, hoodie, and baseball cap with white sneakers and a luggage set

In my opinion, running shorts and a hoodie are great for casual and comfy airport outfits. The biking shorts are very travel-friendly since they’re easy to spend a whole day in and won’t take up much space in your bag. Plus, you can wear them as part of other laid-back outfits or if you plan to stay on top of your workout routine on your trip.

Best Overall: Ann Taylor The Pleated Wide-Leg Pant

  • Best Travel Top: PRETTYGARDEN Women’s 2-Piece Summer Tracksuit

Best Travel Dress: Chico’s Travelers Floral V-Back Maxi Dress

  • Best Travel Leggings : lululemon Wunder Train High-Rise Crop 23-Inch

A model in wide leg pants and a white top.

  • Made with anti-wrinkle material
  • A staple piece that can be worn year-round
  • Available in classic, and petite inseams
  • Some reviews mention that the cut of the pants is wider than what is photographed

Along with being stylish, these Ann Taylor linen pants are wrinkle-resistant, which means you won’t have to bother with an iron the entire time you’re away. The front pleats and high waist elongate the legs, too, making them a great option for those who like to look as statuesque as possible. Pair with a tank or slinky cami — whatever. The pants can go with so many things, including a blazer and blouse for when you return to the office.

Sizes: 0-18 | Color options : 3 | Inseams: Classic, and Petite

Best Travel Set: PRETTYGARDEN Women’s 2-Piece Summer Tracksuit

A woman in a sleeveless tracksuit

  • Pants with pockets
  • Soft material
  • Can be worn as a set or as separate
  • Some may find the fit too baggy

When you’re on the road or in the air, it’s important to select something breathable and comfy. This stylish tracksuit set is made with a blend of viscose and elastane, offering stretch and lots of ventilation for the arms and legs. We love the ribbed detail, as well as the V-neckline of the top. Most of all, we love the price and the fact each piece can be worn separately to create multiple looks on your trip.

Sizes: S-XL | Color options : 8

Best Travel Jacket: ANRABESS Womens Zip Up

A woman in a cream colored zip up hoodie, white shorts and a white tank.

  • Lined with fleece for extra warmth
  • Works as an alternative to a heavier jacket for the airport
  • Some customer reviews mention the zipper getting stuck

This won’t work for the beach and other hot locations, but you’ll be happy to have it at the chilly airport or during the air-conditioned car ride. Featuring a YK2 style and fleece lining, the zip-up jacket has an adjustable drawstring collar, deep front pockets, and a hood if you leave the hotel without an umbrella. Soft and warm, it’s also easy to stuff into a backpack or fold into a compartment of your suitcase.

Sizes: XS-XL | Color options : 23

A woman in a black and white printed travel dress.

  • Made with anti-wrinkle material, making it an ideal packing option
  • Front pockets
  • Dressy-casual style, so you can easily transition the look from day to night
  • May be too long for petite women

Finding a dress that can be worn for multiple occasions is best when traveling, and we like all the prints this maxi comes in. It has a classic V-neck cut, comes with pockets, and is stretchy in all the right places. Wear with sneakers or flats for sightseeing, and then put on heels when it’s time for dinner.

Sizes: 0-18 | Color options: Available in one print

Best Travel Leggings: lululemon Wunder Train High-Rise Crop 23 -Inch

A model in a pair of light green leggings and white sneakers.

  • Buttery soft fabric
  • Internal drawcord
  • Hidden pocket
  • Some customer reviews noted issues with sizing. We suggest reviewing the sizing chart before ordering

Whether you plan to work out on vacay or simply like the athleisure look, these lululemon leggings are a must-pack. They’re soft, stretchy and will keep you comfortable as you window shop and lounge around.

Sizes: 0-20 | Color options: 10 | Inseams: 23-31 inches

Béis The East to West Tote

  • Zippered outer pocket that’s ideal for a passport or phone
  • Travel I.D. tag
  • Laptop friendly
  • Place for water bottle
  • On the larger side

For the gal who has been searching for the perfect carry-on tote bag — we may have just changed your life! The Béis East to West Tote features two different handle straps, a shoulder strap, tons of pockets and a zipper, too.

Size: 14.17 H x W 17.13 W x 9.06 H | Color options: 5

Best Travel Suitcase: Monos Check-In Suitcase

A large black suitcase.

  • TSA-accepted lock
  • Polycarbonate shell
  • Telescopic handle
  • Free shipping, and limited lifetime warranty
  • Higher price point

Skip the multiple-bag packing — this Monos suitcase is all you need. One of our best luggage brand favorites, it’s a reliable travel buddy through and through. It has a sturdy shell, gorgeous vegan leather detailing, and multiple compartments to store your travel outfits in. It’s not cheap, but will last for years and is worth the investment.

Size: (Exterior): 30 × 21 × 11 | (Interior) 28 × 20.5 | Color options: 11

Best Travel Skirt: Real Essentials Women’s Ultra-Soft Flowy Maxi Skirt (3-Pack)

Three models in matching maxi skirts in different colors.

  • Made with soft, stretchy material
  • Comes in a budget-friendly 3-pack
  • Slightly compressive
  • Material is on the thinner side. While not see-through, we recommend adding tights for cooler climates

Some vacation items don’t easily transition back to regular life. Instead of opting for a sarong or something cliche, we suggest a maxi skirt in a classic cut that works no matter where you find yourself. This one from Real Essentials comes in a 3-pack, so you’ll have color options, plus it can practically go with anything.

Sizes: XS-2X | Color options: 8

Best for Plane: Cozy Earth Women’s Bamboo Viscose Jogger Pants

Cozy Earth Women's Bamboo Rib-Knit Jogger Pants

  • Cuffed ankles that won’t drag on the airport or public restroom floor
  • Causally relaxed fit
  • Breathable material
  • Free shipping
  • Not available in petite

Yes, Cozy Earth makes more than just sheets ! These comfy joggers pair well with the brand’s matching Women’s Bamboo Rib-Knit Hoodie and are chic for early morning flights or long car rides. The bestsellers feature a thicker waistband, and banded cuffs to keep legs warm.

Sizes: XS-XXXL | Color options: 4 | Inseams: Regular, Tall

Best Travel Top: Toumett Women’s Long Sleeve Travel Shirt

A woman wearing a white travel blouse and jeans

  • UPF 50 sun protection
  • Zippered front pockets and ventilated back
  • Lightweight
  • The shirt isn’t made with anti-wrinkle material

A lightweight top to wear with jeans, pants, or a maxi skirt is a non-negotiable for travel. This one from Toumett is our favorite for its style and thoughtful design. The breast pockets have hidden zippered pockets, while the back’s flap can be lifted to reveal tiny ventilation holes to prevent sweating. The cool/dry fabric offers protection from the sun, and Amazon customers rave about the durable material.

Sizes: XS-XXL | Color options: 9

Best Travel Bag: lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag 1L

An everywhere bag from lululemon in the color pink.

  • Interior pocket to hold essentials
  • Exterior zipped pocket
  • Can be worn around the waist as a fanny pack or as a crossbody bag
  • Not waterproof

The lululemon Everywhere belt bag is the item I could not live without during my last trip to Europe in 2021. It surprisingly fits a ton of items and keeps your essentials stored away safely but still accessible.

Size: One size fits all | Color options: 14

Best Travel Shorts: PRETTYGARDEN Women’s 2-Piece Suit

A woman in a matching vest and shorts, carrying a bag.

  • Lightweight and stretchy
  • Can be worn to the office when you’re not on vacation
  • The shorts have pockets!
  • Some of the colors don’t appear as vibrant in person as they do in the product photo

For a casual but put-together look, go for something like this. Made from a blend of viscose, elastane and polyester, it’s light, flexible, and easy to care for. Wear as a matching set one day, and then pair the shorts with a flouncy top or tank. The vest looks amazing with a skirt, jeans or another pair of shorts.

Sizes: XS-XXL | Color options: 13

Best Travel Shoe: AllBirds Women’s Tree Dasher 2

AllBirds Women's Tree Dasher 2

  • Flexible sole
  • Slip-on style
  • Breathable mesh upper
  • Based on some customer reviews, the shoes need to be broken in first. We suggest wearing them for a few days before travel

A pair of great walking shoes is a must for the airport, sightseeing and beyond. AllBirds’ Women’s Tree Dashers are great for comfort and style. They have extra traction on the bottom, as well as a thicker sole for more support and cushion. While they’ll need to be broken in, we think you’ll love their overall flexibility, especially while exploring.

Sizes: 5-11 | Color options: 14

Best Travel Shirt: Uniqlo AIRism Seamless V-Neck Long T-Shirt

A woman in a white tee-shirt.

  • Material has a sheer feel but isn’t see-through for maximum coverage
  • AIRism technology to keep you cool

An easy breezy tee is a travel must. It can be paired with a skirt, jeans or slacks, and even works as a coverup when walking to the pool. This one from Uniqlo is drapey and lightweight, plus comes with the brand’s AIRism technology design to keep the material cool even on the hottest day.

Sizes: XXS-XXL | Color options: 5

Best Travel Outfit for Women: Quince 100% European Linen Square Neck Jumpsuit

A woman in a navy blue jumpsuit.

  • Soft, hypoallergenic material
  • Adjustable straps
  • Two front pockets, and one back pocket
  • Prone to wrinkling

A jumpsuit is a wonderful travel outfit because it can be styled in multiple ways. On causal outings, wear with sneakers or flip-flops. For the evening, slip on a pair of strappy heels. This linen jumpsuit from Quince is an affordable favorite of ours. It has adjustable straps, pockets and is lightweight enough for warm climates. It also has a self-tie belt, so the jumpsuit can have a more tailored but effortless look.

Sizes: XS-XL | Color options: 8

Best Travel Hat: Free People Arizona Packable Wide Brim Hat

Left: A woman in a straw hat; Right: The straw hat photographed from above.

  • Adjustable rope detail
  • No UPF protection

This wide brim hat is a touch more stylish than a baseball cap, offers coverage from the sun, and can be adjusted as needed. Best of all, it can be folded to pack away in your bag! You’ll be happy to have it while lounging by the pool or touring sunny streets.

Size: One size fits all | Color options: 4

What is the best outfit to wear on a plane?

The best outfit to wear on a plane is one that is comfortable and non-restrictive.

Look for sets or pieces made from stretchy, non-irritating and breathable materials, such as cotton. Athleisure styles are generally a good option, as they’re stylish, flexible and warm enough to keep you cozy at high altitudes.

We love the lululemon Wunder Train High-Rise Crop 23-Inch Leggings for travel. They’re soft, look super cute with a hoodie and sneakers, plus have a hidden drawstring for an adjustable fit.

We also love shopping for drapey pants and joggers on Amazon. The site makes it easy to filter by color, price and size, and it’s easy to find comfortable options in whatever style we’re looking for.

What shoes to wear on a plane?

The best shoes to wear on a plane are ones that are comfortable and that can be easily taken off and back on when going through TSA.

We like Allbirds Tree Dasher’s 2 . It has a no-slip heel collar for a secure fit, as well as a cushy sole for hours of walking. Most importantly, it can be slipped on and off with ease when needed.

7 Stylish airplane outfits + inspo for comfy women’s travel outfits

For some people, picking out your airplane outfit is an afterthought. You’ve picked your outfits for your holiday and haven’t even thought about what to wear to get there!

But for others, this is a big deal!

I love picking out stylish airplane outfits. I love getting them ready and hanging them up so they’re waiting for me in the morning before an early flight! It’s all part of my holiday routine and it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t have my airport outfit ready and waiting!

I also love that activewear has been such a huge trend for so long because this makes it much easier to find stylish outfits for flying. Yes, activewear and stylish loungewear all the way!

This blog post is for those of you who want to look stylish while you fly….but would also really like to stay in your PJs and be cosy and comfy!

Here it is, stylish airplane outfits that are comfy, cosy and flattering…

The links to all the products mentioned in the post are listed at the end.

  • Wide leg joggers (super comfy, flattering and more stylish than regular sweatpants)
  • Sweater cardigan (also great for chilly evenings on holiday)
  • Cosy but thin long sleeve t-shirt
  • New Balance trainers
  • Carry on backpack
  • Delsey suitcase
  • Insulated water bottle

What NOT to wear on a plane

But before we go any further, let’s start with the basics. What shouldn’t you wear on a plane?

  • Anything that’s going to crease
  • Anything uncomfortable
  • Anything hot that you can’t quickly remove
  • Shoes you can’t slip on and off easily
  • Skirts or shorts that will ride up super high when you sit down
  • Tight jeans that will dig into your belly and crotch
  • Anything skimpy without having something to put on top
  • Light colours
  • A jumpsuit or playsuit – because you have to take the whole thing off which can be awkward in a tiny airplane toilet

Two things that instantly make you look more stylish on a plane

Have you ever noticed that celebrities always look super stylish when they fly, but they’re also usually wearing comfy activewear? It’s because they’re wearing sunglasses and a hat. Honestly, try it. You’ll instantly look more glam.

The classic travel outfit

Classic travel outfit

Comfortable all-black airplane outfit

My go-to outfit for flying is this combo:

  • Black leggings (these Butterluxe leggings from Amazon really are worth the hype!)
  • Comfy trainers (I used to be a Veja fan but I’m currently loving the New Balance 327′ s)
  • A basic t-shirt
  • An oversized hoodie
  • Crossbody bag or The Travel Hack Tote (out of stock but The Travel Hack Backpack is available)
  • Oversized scarf

This is instant comfort but still kind of stylish. The black colours won’t show any mucky stains and you’re going to be warm and cosy without being too hot.

If you’ll probably take your shoes off then don’t forget to add socks to your bag.

  • Elastic belt

Love these classic Veja trainers but I will warn that they take a few days to break them in. If you’re getting them brand new for your holiday then I’d also get some moleskin comfort skin plaster things to protect your heels from blisters.

Why wear all black on a plane?

All black on a plane

I usually wear all black on the plane for two reasons. Firstly, because I often end up getting grubby on a plane. I had a rare fight without my kids recently so I risked it and wore a creamy brown dress on the plane. I thought I’d be fine! Until some poor guy fainted in the aisle, knocking me and my drink all over myself. The guy was OK (he was hungover!) but I’m just sharing that little story to highlight that anything can happen. Even if you think you’re not the kind of person to get messy, you just don’t know on a plane!

The second reason I wear all black on a plane is because I’ll normally wear the same outfit to come home as what I wore on the way out there. So if it does get a bit grubby then at least it’s usually well hidden.

The slightly more stylish but comfy airplane outfit

What to wear on a plane if you’re going straight out when you arrive

If you’re taking a quick weekend break and you’ve got early flights to your destination then there’s a high chance you’ll be heading straight out into the city when you arrive. Maybe you’ll dump your bags at the hotel or maybe you’ll be straight out to explore.

If this is the case then you’re going to want to wear something on the plane that is super comfy but also stylish and appropriate for exploring a new destination.

My advice here is to wear something like a casual, long black dress and team it with tights and boots if the weather is cold.

What if it’s really hot when I’m flying?

If it’s really hot then I’d wear a loose, black dress like mentioned above or swap the leggings for cycling shorts. I’d still take a comfy hoody because airports and planes can be chilly and you can use it as a pillow if you don’t wear it.

What’s the temperature on a plane?

It’s worth remembering that the temperature on a plane doesn’t really change (once the plane doors are shut and the aircon is working), no matter what time of year it is. The temperature on a plane is between 22-24 degrees C. It can feel colder because you’re sitting still and rarely move so I always like to wear fairly warm clothes on a plane.

BUT – it can take ages to board a plane and the heaters or air conditioning don’t start working until everyone has boarded and the doors are shut. If it’s summer then the plane can be HOT HOT HOT when you’re boarding and it could be freezing cold if it’s cold out.

So it’s worth remembering that layers are important here!

What are the best shoes to wear on a plane?

Veja trainers with plane outfit

For most journeys I wear trainers on a plane.

My two favourites are the On Cloudnova trainers and Veja trainers . Both are comfy and stylish and I’ll wear them when I arrive. The Cloudnovas are also fine for running so if I know I’ll be taking a morning run while I’m on holiday then they’re my number one choice.

If I’m travelling long haul then I always take my shoes off because my feet swell and it’s comfier, so I like to wear shoes I can easily remove. Sliders, sandals or trainers are perfect and I’ll keep a pair of socks in my handbag.

If I’m travelling to a cold destination then I usually won’t have any choice but to wear my chunky winter boots on the plane. I usually travel wearing my Dr Martens Chelsea Boots. They’ve heavy and bulky and take up too much space in my luggage so I’ll need to wear them on the plane.

What jacket or coat should you wear with your airport outfit?

Oversized blazer on a plane

For most of us, the jacket we wear on the plane is going to be determined by the weather in our destination.

A lot of the time I don’t actually wear my coat on a plane, I just carry it onto the plane and place it straight in the overhead lockers to save space in my luggage or avoid it getting squished or crumpled.

  • Cold weather – mid-length down coat (I have this one from Arket and I LOVE it)
  • Hot weather – Just a chunky cardigan in case it’s cold on the plane or for chilly evenings
  • Warm weather – Blazer /trench coat/denim jacket

Never wear a jumpsuit on a plane

If I have one rule about what to wear on a plane, it’s this: Never wear a jumpsuit!

This is because when you go to the toilet you’ll need to take the whole thing off. This is a pain and it’s awkward in a small toilet. It’s also a bit embarrassing and never wracking because you’re then completely naked – I always have the fear someone will walk in!

It becomes even more awkward if you put a jumper on top of your jumpsuit and then you also have to take your jumper off.

Trust me, I’ve done it before. Never wear a jumpsuit on a plane!

You look fabulous in your travel gear but please don’t encourage others take their shoes off on the plane.

Sunday 25th of June 2023

@Monica, I agree. You need to exercise your feet/ankles whilst flying and taking your shoes off allows the blood circulation to flow better and minimise swelling. Wearing slip on shoes is a must for flying for this reason. Thanks for a great article!

Wednesday 19th of October 2022

Thank you but I ALWAYS take my shoes off on a plane! I wouldn't walk around with no shoes on or wiggle my bare feet near anyone but my feet always swell and it's much more comfortable on long haul flights. I know in an emergency situation you'd need your shoes on but I don't think you can spend a long haul flight sitting on the edge of your seat prepped for an emergency.

If you’re on the lookout for new airport outfit ideas, you’ve come to the right place. Planning what to wear while travelling can take as much consideration as, say, a wedding guest look. While they may be different aisles, the walk through the airport to the plane can be just as important – yes, really.

The thing is though, much like planning an outfit for a special occasion, you may be faced with the dilemma of not knowing which vibe to go for. Do you go for the sporty look with leggings , a logo sweater and comfy fashion trainers ? Is it going to be a cool linen shirt , linen trousers and an oversized beach bag that doubles up as a carry-on to avoid being loaded up with luggage ? Or do you head to your terminal in a summer dress and sandals as though you’ve already landed at your chosen exotic location? No matter how you play it, we’re here to give you all the inspiration. And where better to start than the ‘90s?

You only have to look back to the likes of supermodels Naomi Campbell (notice the capri pants everyone is wearing this summer), Kate Moss and Cindy Crawford to see how the airport has always been an off-duty runway for celebrities. And while the rest of us are highly unlikely to be swarmed by paparazzi at arrivals, we can still go in with the same approach when it comes to planning a look.

Luckily, the actual runways have also given some guidance, with the Wales Bonner spring/summer 2024 show backing tracksuit jackets, Rokh showing vest tops and wide leg trousers (an effortless look to recreate) and Gucci offering up the shorts and top co-ord – an easy win when it comes to a plane-to-pool outfit.

It's not just the catwalks, either. Airport outfits and travel clothes are all we see on Instagram these days thanks to a new-found tradition that has all our fave influencers and celebrities sharing their pre-flight OOTDs. Yep, fashion bloggers and stylists seem to hit the nail on the head each time, achieving the right balance between looking comfortable and pulled-together, all while seeming as though they've not even tried.

The top ethical porn sites that are inclusive and empowering

Whether you choose to go for the loungewear look or prefer smart jeans and a blazer (in case it helps you get that upgrade), we've decoded the different styles. And it's all thanks to seven fashion insiders who have given their tips and tricks when it comes to airport outfit ideas , along with some easy formulas you can copy and paste from your own wardrobe.

1. The Cosy-Comfy Airport Outfit

It’s not often fashion meets function, but between jumping in an early morning cab and the plane temperature being unpredictable, a lot of people tend to dress for the journey rather than the destination. Cosy, comfy pieces – that still have that luxe look – are the base to all off-duty model looks.

Digital creator, Rachael Keegan shares her airport outfit ideas, “When travelling, I’m all about comfort as I get cold at the airport. I think tonal dressing always looks effortless, so I tend to copy my everyday summer outfits and go for timeless separates or matching sets. A knit co-ord or a midi dress with a hands-free crossbody bag never fails.”

2. The Dressier The Better Airport Outfit

If you believe your holiday starts the moment your out of office is on, and you're not afraid of showing it, you’re not alone. Celebrity stylist, Nana Acheampong , is the queen of standout travel outfits: “To me, there’s no such thing as being overdressed. With a wardrobe full of colourful, bold and fun pieces I see the airport as the perfect place to wear them, and from my recent experience of losing my luggage, wearing a holiday-ready outfit meant I was still ready for the beach and a night out, even without my suitcase !”

3. The Quiet Luxury Airport Outfit

When it comes to quiet luxury it’s all about sleek separates. Think cashmere knitwear and an understated designer tote bag, all elevated with timeless jewellery and the chicest of sunglasses . AKA, the sort of travel outfit that could get you sat nearer to the front of the plane…if you catch our drift.

Author and travel writer Gina Jackson says, “I’m often heading off to tropical locations, so my fail-safe outfit is a just-ironed linen two piece. They’re lightweight and comfy enough for plane journeys but still elevated and stylish – the perfect outfit to wear to the airport and then straight onto the beach or even to dinner.”

4. The Sporty Airport Outfit

Embracing athleisure is one of the best moves you can make when it comes to airport outfits. Whether you’ve got a long haul flight or a quick dash to Paris, a sporty look made up of great-quality joggers , a logo hoodie , and a cap so you don't need to worry about doing your hair will be your go-to.

Billie Bhatia – writer and co-host of ‘Spill’ podcast – is a fan of activewear on-board. “With sweatshirts and leggings making up a large percentage of my everyday uniforms when running errands or working from home, of course I’m also going to utilise these for travelling, too,” she says.

5. The Colourful, Ready-For-The-Heat Airport Outfit

If you’ve been counting down the days until your holiday, no doubt there’s a pile of summer outfits ready and waiting. So why keep them on pause any longer? Bring out the denim shorts , wear the crochet dress , and add the raffia accessories. While everyone has to go get changed after landing, you’ll be sitting there smug as punch already in your beach look.

Author and presenter, Zeena Shah is all for travelling in holiday looks, “I created #ColourMeUpMonday to inspire everyone to have fun with dopamine-endorsing outfits no matter the day of the week. So this of course goes for airport outfits, too. I’m all for wearing a new floaty dress with ballet pumps and switching to flip flops as soon as I can see the sea.”

6. The Influencer-Style Airport Outfit

There’s no doubt about it, Instagram can heavily influence your airport outfits. Whether it’s a Frankie Shop blazer layered over leggings, a vest with a sweater draped over the shoulders, or simply just the latest Dragon Diffusion bag with jorts, wearing hero items all at once is an easy way to ensure your trip is grid-approved from the moment you’re on that runway.

Content creator, Lois Sterling , owns items on everyone’s wish list: “I’m all about investing in key staples that will serve me well across all seasons. My capsule wardrobe consists of items I know will all work together, and this means getting ready for a trip is made easier. Instead of trackies, I often wear denim shorts to the airport as they’re super casual and comfy but can be easily dressed up once I land.”

7. The Night Flight Airport Outfit

If a flight further afield is on the cards (lucky you) then airport travel outfits need even more thought. Getting tucked up for a night in the sky is all about comfort, beating the air con – clever layers like long sleeve tops and super soft knitwear will help – and also having essential beauty products in your carry-on ready for when you’re about to land. Because we could never say no to a sheet mask, even at 30,000 feet in the air.

“Comfort is key for long-haul flights, I always opt for drawstring wide leg trousers which are easy and roomy for the flight but also lightweight for when you arrive in a warm destination. It’s also all about the layers, a pair of cashmere socks with Birkenstock Bostons is equal parts cosy and stylish. And they’re practically like wearing your slippers ! ” Says digital creator, Francesca Saffari .

Dressing appropriately for air travel means knowing what will keep you comfortable on the plane—and given the cramped seats and various temperature changes on flights, this isn’t always easy.

What to Wear While Flying: Always Wear These Things on the Plane

The following items provide plenty of comfort plus a touch of style, making them the best clothes for flying. Be the best dressed in the cabin with our guide to in-flight apparel.

Layers, Layers, Layers

HappyLuxe bamboo scarf

Air travel is often an assemblage of disparate micro-climates, from the sweat-inducing sunny tarmac to the arctic air-conditioned cabin during flight. Fight that discomfort with plenty of layers like a washable travel scarf/wrap/blanket hybrid that’s a large enough to snuggle underneath when it’s particularly chilly.

Pashminas, shawls, wraps, cardigans, sweatshirts, vests, and light jackets are perfect. You can even fold or roll soft items, like cotton jackets, and use them as makeshift pillows during flight. Plus, the more layers you pile on your body, the less you need to pack in your luggage. Roll items and stuff them in your carry-on bag or personal item if you’re too warm.

Layers that help you regulate temperature while flying also come in very handy when traveling through various (actual) climates. And for travelers hitting the road during shoulder season, when the weather is particularly unpredictable, layers are key for optimal comfort.

Breathable Fabrics

Long sleeve top from Unbound Merino (left) and Swiftland 7/8 Running Tights from REI Co-op (right)

Maintain in-flight comfort and cleanliness by wearing breathable fabrics—materials like cotton, silk, or linen. Fabrics that don’t allow air to circulate will hold in sweat, likely making you feel dirtier faster and probably necessitating a good spin in the washing machine upon landing. Natural fabrics are great, but moisture-wicking manmade fabrics are suitable options as well: Swiftland 7/8 Running Tights from REI Co-op are a nylon/spandex blend that’s incredibly quick-drying.

Merino wool is one of the best options for odor and moisture resistance; you can wear it straight off the plane without needing to wash it in between. Proof’s 72-Hour Merino Tee makes the perfect base layer, and can be worn for 72 hours without acquiring bad smells. For women, consider Unbound Merino’s Wool Long Sleeve T-Shirt , which is made from 100% merino wool that’s soft and cozy on cold planes while wicking any sweat away from the skin.

Support or Compression Legwear

Compression socks in a variety of colors and patterns

Many doctors recommend that pregnant women wear support or compression stockings in flight. But compression legwear is also a good choice for those with pre-existing medical conditions, any travelers taking long-haul flights, and anyone who flies often. Compression socks or stockings , which promote blood circulation, help prevent swelling of the legs, and help guard against deep vein thrombosis (DVT), work by putting pressure on leg muscles and increasing blood flow. These don’t have to look like medical wear either—there are plenty of stylish compression sock options available.

Comfortable, Simple Shoes

ECCO footwear men's slip ons in blue

It’s best to wear extremely comfortable, flat shoes on the plane—think of your poor feet after hours or even days of sitting, standing, and walking en route to your destination. You’ll also want to select shoes that are easy to slip on and off when passing through airport security. Cole Haan slip-ons offer sneaker-grade comfort in a stylish package, as do Toms (for men and women ) and ECCO Footwear .

Clothes with Lots of Pockets

Public Rec's Dealmaker Pants

With all kinds of airline baggage fees adding on to the price of a ticket these days, clothes that do double duty as a wearable carry-on bag are de rigueur . The SCOTTeVEST cotton hoodie is available for men and women, and one of our picks for great accessories and clothes with hidden pockets . And there are myriad other travel jackets out there that feature an explosion of pockets, like Lightweight Down Puffer Jacket from Quince, made from certified responsible down and featuring interior pockets for valuables like wallets and passports.

Leggings with pockets can be an essential part of a plane outfit for stashing a phone or passport while still keeping it easily accessible. Arc’teryx’s Essent High-Rise Leggings have pockets big enough to hold even the biggest smartphone, and the style is sleek enough to wear under dresses, or as pants during a hike at your destination.

For men, Public Rec’s Dealmaker Pants can pass as business casual while hiding plenty of pockets. The pants also have a touch of spandex woven into the fabric to keep you comfortable on long-haul flights.

Loose-Fitting Clothing

air travel outfits for ladies

As mentioned before, deep vein thrombosis is a danger on flights, where travelers stuck in cramped seats for long periods of time are at greater risk for developing blood clots. Leave your skinny jeans at home and opt for less restrictive garments like Duluth Trading’s NoGA Classic Slim Leg Pants , which have the flattering fit of leggings but aren’t skin-tight, falling loosely around the ankles for maximum comfort.

8 Most Packable Shoes for Travel

Something Stylish

Models wearing the Drapey Square Shirt and the logo-free tee from Everlane

Don’t throw fashion out the window. When it comes to dressing for a flight, a lot of advice focuses on function. But dressing with a bit of style—while keeping conscious of comfort of course—could help you get a free upgrade. An anonymous source once told Goop : “On a Virgin flight back to Heathrow, I spotted one of the staff’s monitors that read, ‘Look for well-dressed people to upgrade.’” This won’t happen every time, but if you are hoping to get upgraded , it helps to look smart. The Drapey Square Shirt from Everlane is flowy but still look good once you disembark. For men, their classic, logo-free tee is comfortable without being restrictive and will let you blend in anywhere.

The Perfect Plane Outfit for Women

Allbirds Wool Runners in grey

Look for a pair of breathable shoes that are easy to slip on and off. If you have TSA PreCheck , don’t worry about wearing socks. Wool Runners and the Wool Loungers from Allbirds are super comfortable and breathable so you can go sockless, and the neutral colors go with any outfit.

Blue bamboo scarf

A convertible shawl or scarf that can double as a blanket is a necessity for every female traveler. This bamboo shawl can be transformed into many things—a cardigan, shawl, infinity scarf, hood, plane blanket, and other customizable options. The fabric is breathable and sweat-wicking, so you won’t overheat on the plane with this layer.

Model showing off two angles of a purple bamboo top available on Amazon

Bamboo is a great material for travel, as it is thin and comfortable but still holds up to sweat and heat, making it a perfect layering piece for any climate (or airplane temperature). These bamboo tops from Amazon are inexpensive and come in a wide variety of colors to match the rest of your vacation wardrobe.

Betabrand's Cosmo Lite Yoga Dress Pants

A comfortable pair of pants completes a perfect plane outfit. The right pair allows you to step off the plane ready to go and looking professional. Find a pair with a touch of spandex for ultimate in-flight comfort. Betabrand’s Cosmo Lite Yoga Dress Pants come in a stretchy nylon-elastane blend that’s not too tight but still holds you in and gives you a smooth silhouette.

Personal Item

The Kanken by Fjallraven backpack

Don’t forget the perfect bag for all your carry-on essentials . Look for a slim backpack to free up your hands while traveling and optimize your legroom while flying. The Kanken by Fjallraven fits perfectly under the seat in front of you and has a laptop compartment, two side pockets for items you’ll need easy access to, plus as an inner sleeve and a front zippered pocket. It completes your perfect plane outfit.

Outer Layer

A draped open front cardigan in tan, available on Amazon

Depending on the time of year and your destination, you’ll want to travel with a versatile outer layer. Look for something in a neutral color and a lightweight fabric. This drapey open-front cardigan can transition from day to night, and goes with almost every outfit in a pinch.

The Perfect Plane Outfit for Men

air travel outfits for ladies

Look cool and comfortable with the Runner-up Mizzles from Allbirds. These shoes will keep you dry on your trek to and from the airport even in the worst of weather conditions, then keep you cozy in flight.

Shoes That Are Good for Your Feet, According to Doctors

air travel outfits for ladies

The Gramercy Blazer from Bluffworks doesn’t wrinkle, so it’s ideal for going straight from plane to boardroom. It also has 10 built-in pockets to hold your wallet, passport, headphones, and more on travel days.

The 72-Hour Merino Tee from Huckberry

A basic and comfortable T-shirt is perhaps the most important part of your perfect plane outfit. I love Huckberry’s incredibly soft 72-Hour Merino Tee . The odor-resistant wool fabric will keep you feeling fresh after a long travel day.

Model showing off two angles of the Bluffworks Airlines pants

A comfortable pair of pants is a key component for a great travel outfit, and Bluffworks’ Airline Pants are designed specifically with in-flight style in mind. These pants combine the look of a dress pant with the feel of a jogger, creating a stylish silhouette with extra stretch for sitting for long hours on the plane.

Red and black versions of the SwissGear 1900 Scansmart TSA laptop Backpack

The SwissGear 1900 Scansmart TSA laptop Backpack will make you a more organized traveler. The compartmentalized backpack is an ideal carry-on bag with separate pockets for travel essentials and your tech gear, making it easy to find your stuff quickly during your flight.

I'm a Fashion Editor: 8 Comfy Yet Chic Travel Outfits I Always Come Back To

The last time I flew long-haul, I wore jeans for the duration. Big mistake. In my opinion, no matter how worn-in and stretchy your favourite Levi's are, an airplane is no place for denim .

For a flight of any length, comfortable clothing is a good idea, but it's especially important for longer journeys on which you're hoping to catch some Z's—not least to help you get ahead of the jetlag. If you're boarding the plane in restrictive clothes, you can forget about it. So, do yourself a favour and plan your travel outfit carefully, keeping a few key things in mind.

Comfort doesn't just come down to wearing non-clingy fabrics. You should also consider any potential changes in temperature . Are you leaving the UK and headed somewhere balmy ? You'll need layers that you can peel off on landing. Think about your whole trip from start to finish, and imagine what you'll need to stay comfy at each step.

But fear not, all of these practical factors don't mean you have to abandon any semblance of style. In fact, you can look just as chic as you always do as you glide through security and onto your long-haul flight. Just keep scrolling to see eight looks that tick all the boxes, then shop the pieces you need in time for your next getaway .

See 8 Comfy Travel Outfits That Are Editor Approved:

1. co-ord + birkenstocks.

outfits-for-long-flights-296005-1684053542380-main

Style Notes: A relaxed co-ord is just the ticket to a comfortable plane journey. An interesting texture like plisse will keep you looking on-point as you get some shut-eye at 30 thousand feet.

Shop the look:

Linen Shirt - Light Beige - Arket Gb

You can also style these pieces separately to maximise your holiday wardrobe.

Linen Drawstring Trousers - Beige - Arket Gb

Sezane Gaspard Cardigan

A year-round essential.

Cotton Pull-On Shorts - White - Arket Gb

White cotton is key this summer.

Gathered-Sleeve Jumper

You can also chuck this over your outfit on cooler summer evenings.

Essential Leggings

These may be the softest leggings around.

Veja Venturi Suede Trainers - White - Arket Gb

Pack these if your trip will involve a lot of walking.

Style Notes: I know what you're thinking—a dress? For a long flight? If it sounds like a strange choice, that's because you're picturing the wrong kind of dress. You want one in a super-stretchy jersey fabric that you won't mind sitting in all day (or night) long, with a tee underneath in case there's a chill on-board.

Crew-Neck T-Shirt - White - Arket Gb

Out editors' favourite white tee. Period.

Pull & Bear Long strappy polyamide dress

Doesn't it look so comfy?

Kara Sand Suede and Black Leather Toe Cap Ballerina Pumps

Make sure you break these leather shoes in before take-off.

What to Wear on a Long Flight: Comfortable Essentials From Everlane, Lunya, and More

Image may contain Clothing Pants Adult Person TShirt Blouse Footwear Shoe Long Sleeve Sleeve and Knitwear

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Let's face it: When you’re about to embark on a six-plus-hour intercontinental flight and your body is buzzing with anxiety at the thought of potential delays, missed connections, and lost luggage, piecing together a stylish outfit is probably the least of your concerns. Factor in the near-impossible feat of sleeping upright on a plane and tolerating snoring seat mates, and it feels necessary to prioritize comfort on long-haul flights.

While matching sweatsuits are one (beloved) way to go, there are plenty of options in the way of loungewear these days. Pieces made of finely woven knits that feel as soft as a cloud, compression fabrics that prevent swelling, and buttery cashmere travel blankets that you can cocoon yourself in are among the ones we recommend for overnight or otherwise lengthy flights. Below, find 18 brands whose clothes and accessories will make deciding what to wear on a long flight as easy and comfortable as possible, broken down by categories:

  • Performance wear

Loungewear sets

Cashmere and wool basics, elevated basics, plane to office clothing.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Performance wear and athleisure

Lululemon is a perennial favorite for basic black leggings , snag-one-when-you-can belt bags , and comfortable joggers . But don't overlook the brand's tops: Pieces like this oversized cropped crew and the cotton half-zip shown below are made with soft, breathable fabrics that'll keep you feeling good from plane to car to hotel.

air travel outfits for ladies

Huckberry serves up menswear basics made for the active traveler, including soft yoga joggers and water-resistant workwear-inspired pants that will take you from the plane to a bike ride or beachside stretch session with ease. The brand's bestsellers section is full of pieces you can wear in the air and repeat on vacation, like the 72-Hour Merino T-shirt and The 365 Pant. You can find travel and outdoor gear from brands like Patagonia, Barbour, Marine Layer, and Saturdays NYC on Huckberry's site, too.

Image may contain: Clothing, Pants, and Jeans

You may have heard the Vuori pitch before (the brand is an active podcast sponsor for many popular shows like Smartless and Crime Junkie ): It offers premium performance apparel inspired by the active coastal California lifestyle, and wants to offer a new perspective on the athleisure category as a whole. I admit, the clothing is some of the softest I've ever worn, which certainly sets itself apart from more traditional activewear brands like Nike or Adidas. Try Vuori's joggers, shorts, and super-soft tees for an outfit that feels like pajamas, but looks respectable enough for the airport lounge .

Outdoor Voices

When warm weather is in the forecast, the exercise dress comes back out. Often designed with shorts underneath and a built-in bra, the practical, sweat-wicking one-pieces are a great multi-purpose vacation outfit: Wear one on the plane with a jean jacket layered on top, then break it out again for a pickleball game or afternoon walking around to see the sights. Outdoor Voices makes a comfortable one with adjustable straps and a built-in shorts liner. If a dress doesn't sound appealing, opt for the Zephyr pant—it's made of a lightweight performance fabric that will serve you well in warm destinations. Of course, the brand's classic leggings are a great in-flight option, too.

If the only thing that comes to mind when you hear the name Spanx is shapewear, you're missing out. The brand has extended its offerings over the years to include everything from work dresses to jeans and blazers. But for long-haul flights, we're partial to the AirEssentials collection, which has a super-soft, drapey, scuba-like fabric. Shop The Travel Edit for even more style options, including shorts and jumpsuits.

If it's good enough for Oprah, it's got our vote. Cozy Earth's bamboo joggers received the media mogul's official seal of approval in 2020, by way of her Favorite Things list, and after trying them on ourselves, we understand why. The mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and Spandex produces a super smooth, cool-to-the-touch fabric that'll make you feel like you're wrapped in your favorite set of sheets. The brand's Stretch-Knit Bamboo Lounge tee and Ultra-Soft Bamboo hoodie are among other bestsellers.

Any physician will tell you that sitting in the same position for long periods of time is bad for you: It limits blood circulation, causes swelling, and increases the risk for blood clots. Movement around the cabin helps keep your blood moving, as does wearing the right garments. Sleepwear brand Lunya has an all-in-one fix with its Restore Travel Kit, which comes with a basic tank, a long-sleeve tee, a pair of leggings, a sleep mask, and socks (former city guides director Corina Quinn is a big fan ). The bundle is neatly packaged in a very practical mesh laundry bag, and each item is crafted from a breathable Pima cotton-blend fabric that promises to help increase blood flow and oxygen levels, ultimately improving circulation.

Friend + Folk

Launched in 2022, Friend + Folk is a woman-owned , gender- and size-inclusive line made in downtown Los Angeles at Bomme Studio , a CFDA-approved, ethical and sustainable production house. The pieces are produced in small batches to reduce waste, and are supremely comfortable—the Joon joggers are a personal favorite of mine, but for a more classic sweatpant, try the Harbor style. Other in-flight staples include the long-sleeve Witter T-shirt and Crosby classic hoodie .

Spun from the finest goat hair, Naadam’s 100 percent Mongolian cashmere basics are so ridiculously soft, it feels like a luxurious blanket that you can wear out in public—and on transcontinental flights. The built-in perks of cashmere include high breathability, and anti-wrinkle and odor-blocking benefits. The brand's tailored sweaters and hoodies will keep you comfy without looking unkempt.

Former Traveler editor Noah Kaufman calls Ibex's clothing “some of the nicest, most comfortable stuff I've ever put on.” Made of Ibex's signature Merino wool fabric, the clothes are built to curb odor, and the fabric is naturally thermoregulating—meaning you can wear pieces year-round—and smooth against skin (no itchiness here). He's been wearing a pair of ultra-soft joggers around the house, and says they'll make a great addition to any long-haul flight uniform.

Athleta has plenty of great leggings, workout wear, and athleisure, but if you're looking for something a little more versatile to wear throughout your trip, check out the Brooklyn mid-rise ankle pant. Made with a stretchy, wrinkle-resistant, these pants are comfortable enough to wear on a plane, but have a tailored fit that can be dressed up or down. They're also super lightweight, in case you decide to pack them on the way back home.

Universal Standard

If there's a brand that can get us to wear "real clothes" on a plane, it's Universal Standard. With clothes from size 00 to 40, its mission is to create clothing that looks and feels good on every body, using fabrics like premium Peruvian cotton, soft Italian Merino wool, and French satin-back crepe to do so. The Promenade linen jumpsuit could easily be worn all day long, and the Sally Liquid Jersey shirt dress is a piece you'll wear again and again. As for the jeans, before you shake your head, know that the brand's styles are stretchy, with a truly relaxed, comfortable fit—look to the ComfortDenim collection for the most plane-friendly pieces. If jeans are a no-go (fair), try the Go-Stretch pant for a looser waistband.

With its penchant for solid colors (and the occasional stripe) and classic silhouettes, Everlane makes tons of mix-and-match travel essentials . The Cashmere Stroopwafel turtleneck and Dream Pant are some of our readers' favorites, but we'd also point to the Perform legging , Re-Track barrel sweatpant , and Felted Merino half-zip as great long-haul flight pieces.

Image may contain: Sonny Zhou, Blouse, Clothing, Shirt, Dress Shirt, and Pants

Free People

Free People is known for its breezy, bohemian-style clothes, so of course they'd make the kind of pants, coats, and utility suits that are comfortable enough to wear on a plane. The Studio to Street collection and FP Movement collections are filled with layering pieces and roomy pants you can throw on after a workout, though like leggings or yoga pants, they serve many purposes. For overnight flights, we like the Hailee Cardi set. If you're in need of a versatile jacket you can wear on cold planes and chilly fall evenings alike, the loose-fitting Dolman Quilted Knit remains popular and comes in tons of different colorways.

Image may contain: Clothing, Formal Wear, Suit, Pants, Person, Footwear, Shoe, Knitwear, Sweater, and Coat

Banana Republic

If you're not the type to wear loungewear on a plane, no matter the flight time, you've still got options that prioritize comfort. Banana Republic's linen resort pieces fit the mold, with slim-cut and wide-leg pants, button-up short-sleeve shirts , and more options that can take you from the airport to the office, or to the resort pool, depending on how you style them.

Versatile and multidimensional, Aday ensures that every single one of its items has more than one feature—the result of working with engineers to source technologically advanced fabrics that can wick moisture, regulate heat, defy wrinkles, resist ultra-violet rays, and so much more. Simply put, Aday's pieces are exactly what you want to wear on a long flight. There’s the technical silk wrap top that not only does all of the above, but can be worn more than one way. The thin strap tank , also made from technical silk, is the perfect layering piece (plus, it has adjustable straps). And finally, to complete the ideal traveling outfit, there’s the super-stretchy elastic-banded pant, which is both quick-drying and wrinkle-resistant.

The maker of many a wardrobe staple, including some of our favorite basic tees , California-based brand Buck Mason offers plenty of thermal tees, sweaters, and button-ups that make great layering pieces on chilly flights. For a classic but slightly elevated sweats look, Traveler 's associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny loves traveling in the brand's cozy sweatpant and crew neck .

Jenni Kayne

Embody the laid-back, California-cool aesthetic with pieces from Jenni Kayne. Her designs are made to last, and often come in soothing neutral tones. You can find comfortable but structured essentials like the polished Rio trouser and the popular Cocoon sweater, as well as cozy accessories like cashmere socks and oversized blanket shawls .

8 Best Travel Dresses Of 2024, Tested By Travel Experts

Our top options include CSB's Racer Back Maxi dress and Lululemon's Align dress.

When you're busy stuffing clothes into your carry-on or luggage set , figuring out what to wear to the airport may be your last priority, but a good travel dress will give you an effortless, polished look you can use and reuse once you reach your destination.

Where a travel dress differs from any other standard dress is in its durability and ability to be easily styled up or down. Depending on accessories, a travel dress can look as fancy or casual as you want it to be, but its material will usually be made from wrinkle-resistant, quick-drying, or stretchy fabric. This kind of material makes it comfy to wear on long travel days or days where you'll be getting a lot of movement in.

When shopping for a travel dress, you should consider how the dress can be layered with other items to adapt to different weather conditions, says Addie Bell , CEO of Jetset and Travel, a travel consulting agency and affiliate of SmartFlyer. She also recommends checking that it's suitable for both day and night activities, which will maximize its utility—you can use it while traveling and during your actual trip.

Here are a few other things to consider.

What to consider

Since travel days often include a lot of walking, you'll want to make sure your dress' fabric is breathable. This will also come in handy if you're traveling to a warm weather destination. Breathable fabrics Bell recommends include cotton or linen. Other materials you can consider are jersey, spandex blends, and certain synthetics, like polyester. "[These] wrinkle-resistant materials...are best if you need to maintain a polished look after being packed," Bell says.

When traveling, Bell typically goes for longer dresses since they offer more coverage and comfort, Bell says. But, "a midi or knee-length dress strikes a perfect balance between style and practicality, and is typically suitable for a variety of activities and settings," she adds. When choosing the length of her dress, Bell also considers what the weather is like. "Longer dresses provide more coverage and protection from the sun, while shorter dresses can be more comfortable in hot climates," she says. Whatever the length you're comfortable with, she recommends making sure your dress allows for easy movement, especially when doing a lot of walking or activities.

The color of your dress is your preference, but Bell says that neutral tones like black, navy, white, and beige are versatile and easy to mix and match with other wardrobe pieces. "Subtle patterns can also help hide wrinkles and stains, making the dress more travel-friendly."

On the other side, bright colors can add a fun, vibrant touch to travel and can be used to complement the destination you're visiting, Bell says. "I always recommend sticking within a similar color palette to ensure they match other items you’re bringing," she adds.

How we chose

For the past few months, Women's Health editors, including lifestyle and commerce editor Jasmine Gomez, researched and tested the best travel dresses for jetsetting in style and comfort. In addition to testing dresses based on durability, material feel, and their ability to stand up to lots of movement and long hours, we also consulted travel expert Addie Bell, founder and CEO of Jetset and Travel, a travel consulting agency. She's also an avid traveler who also provides trip and packing advice.

Before you plan your next trip to one of the award winners in our 2024 Healthy Travel Awards , below find the eight best travel dresses, tested by travel experts.

Lululemon's Align dress boasts some of the many features Lulu's cult and editor-favorite Align leggings do. We found that it's super lightweight, breathable, and buttery-soft. What's even better is what's underneath the dress—a built-in bra and a shorts liner with drop-in pockets. The dress is on the shorter side, but the shorts provide reassurance when bending over to pick up luggage or during other travel-related tasks.

The dress is also designed from sweat-wicking material, so those who run hot will not only like this option because it leaves more skin exposed, but because it keeps that skin that is covered up cool and dry. When you're not traveling in it, it also makes a great option for low-impact activity, since the dress was actually designed for yoga.

After having our editors put over 10 travel dress options to the test, the Racer Back Maxi Dress from CSB came out on top for its stretchy feel that makes it easy to move around in, polished look, and easy to style nature.

"Running to the airport is stressful, which is why I love this dress for a comfortable, effortless look that seems like I actually spent time getting dressed," says lifestyle and commerce editor Jasmine Gomez. She likes that you can easily pair it with jewelry, a nice bag, or even a sun hat to make an outfit that's great for travel, but also ideal for immediately hitting the streets once you reach your destination.

To offer an ideal fit, the dress is made from a ribbed fabric blend that offers slight compression, giving this dress a shapewear-like feel that isn't overly constricting. Its maxi length, low scoop neckline, and racerback design also makes it perfect for those who want a full coverage option that's still ideal for warm weather, but even colder temps when it's layered with other clothing.

Though there's a limited number of color options available, the three it does come in–brown, gray, and black—are great basic tones that pair together nicely with almost anything.

Those traveling for work or looking for a more polished option will like Uniqlo's AIRism Sleeveless dress. Though you'll look ready for an interview, the dress is very functional for traveling, since its fabric is stretchy, features pockets on both sides, and is made of quick-drying material. The dress's fabric is made from a polyester blend, which is what lends to its more polished look—it's a way less sportier option than Lululemon's Align dress for sure.

Most people will also find that the dress has a flattering fit. It's designed with a fit-and-flare silohouette created by panel lines that are cut to create a contoured look. Our testers that value sustainability also gave the dress bonus points for being partly made using recycled materials.

Vuori Pose Sands Dress

Pose Sands Dress

Vuori's Pose Sands Dress is an excellent pick for those that plan on walking a ton of miles while sightseeing and taking photos for the 'gram. Though it's on the longer side, the side slit makes it really easy to move in and the rib knit fabric makes it resistant to wrinkles.

The dress is also designed to hug the body in all the right places. In fact, we found that it offers a bit of compression, though the slit alleviates some of that tension, making it a next-level comfy option. Editors particularly liked that it can be paired with either sneakers, heels, or boots depending on the look you're going for or the terrain or weather you're conquering. If you're not wearing it to the airport, you'll like that the dress is a space-saver. It packs light and compactly, making it a great option for those traveling only with carry-ons.

Beyond Yoga City Chic Dress

City Chic Dress

If you've looked around recently, you know cargo is in, and this dress from Beyond Yoga is both trendy and functional. It's designed to flatter all body types, thanks to its adjustable cinched waist. The waistband's stretchy drawcord lets you achieve a customized fit that feels uniquely comfortable to you.

Our testers particularly like the dress's spacey pockets, which lets you store important documents, like an ID or boarding pass while you're traveling. The dress is also made with a two-way zipper, which makes it super easy to go to the bathroom without having to scrunch your dress up in risk of wrinkling it. The collar gives it an elevated look, and its quick-drying polyester fabric, a soft feel worth wearing on long travel days.

Anrabess Summer Casual Tank Dress

Summer Casual Tank Dress

Those looking for a cozy, put-together option will like this Amazon dress. It's looser in nature, but pleated and tiered with a deep v-neckline, and those small details make all the difference. Plus, you can't beat its budget-friendly price of less than $40.

Depending on what you pair it with, the dress is appropriate for a variety of settings from a morning stroll to a more formal dinner, and its flowy nature makes it a breeze to travel in, too. We like that its pockets are very roomy, and that it has a lightweight, non-constricting feel, which is ideal for long days on your feet or longer flights or commutes. Plus, the dress is available in over 10 colors, so it isn't hard to find one you particularly love.

Grecerelle Short Sleeve Casual Summer Dress

Short Sleeve Casual Summer Dress

While the other dresses on this list are mostly available in neutral tones, this one offers a lot more color options. You can buy it in basic colors, like black, white, and navy blue, but it's also available in floral, paisley patterns, and more. Made from a blend of rayon and spandex, the dress is also breathable and stretchy.

We found that the fabric is very similar to a nice t-shirt, so its comfy feel makes it great for wearing for hours on end. Though it doesn't wrinkle easily, this dress is more prone to wrinkles than others on this list, which is something to keep in mind if you hate ironing or steaming. Some of our testers also pointed out that the waistband is one of the most forgiving on this list, making it a great option for those with wider hips who don't like drawstring or elastic waistbands.

Sweaty Betty Sweaty Betty Power Workout Dress

Sweaty Betty Power Workout Dress

Tenniscore is in, and it turns out that many tennis dresses actually make good travel dresses, too. That's because they're designed to withstand a ton of movement, sweaty activity, and come with built-in features like shorts and a bra to offer a little more coverage than a traditional dress.

Made with an elastane blend, our travel testers like that this dress is stretchy but contoured, creating a flattering, sculpted fit. The material is quick-drying and moisture-wicking, which means it can stand up against warm weather, wet travel days, and more. Since the fabric is on the thinner side, it's also rolls or packs nicely into any luggage, saving you more space for your bulkier items.

Here’s an ultimate guide for you, from packing tips to outfit ideas according to weather and based on your activities there.

So, please sit down, have a cup of coffee, and let’s start planning your outfits for your trip with me.

Packing Tips for Your Trip to Russia:

SEMI-FORMAL OUTFITS

  • SUMMER & SPRING OUTFITS
  • WINTER & FALL OUTFITS

OUTFITS FOR MATURE WOMEN

Celebrities inspired outfits, outfits for plus-size women, what should i bring with me when traveling to russia.

If you are a first-time traveler confused about what you should bring to Russia, here’s the simplest answer:

  • For winters – thermal, long coats, mufflers, earbuds, gloves, warm shoes, and socks.
  • For summ er – long skirts, light wear jackets, and maxi dresses.
  • For a formal trip – bring long skirts and suits to make an impression.

air travel outfits for ladies

  • Keep the necessities first , like your documents, laptop, extensions, phone charger, utilities, hand sanitizer, masks (just in case), insect repellent, and sunscreen.

What To Wear In Russia - Tips

  • If there is more than one city on your trip, try to keep your luggage minimum . Try to add statement pieces from your wardrobe. For example, don’t keep too many coats. It will take up more space. Take just one or a maximum of two coats which you can style with every outfit.

What To Wear In Russia - Tips

  • Pack shoes that are comfortable to wear the whole day. If you are traveling in winter, then you prefer boots over sneakers. It is because, with sneakers, there is always a chance your foot will get wet in the rain.

What To Wear In Russia - Tips

CASUAL & EASY OUTFITS

You can find hiking trails, parks, and much other adventurous stuff to do in Russia. So pack casual and easy outfits in which you can feel comfortable all day.

Instead of heels, I suggest you carry sneakers because you will walk a lot there. You can wear shorts, there’s no harm in that, but jeans are more prevalent among locals.

21 – Yellow Top With Black High-Waisted Pants And Green Silk Oversized Shirt For Airport

For the airport, always select comfy clothes. Whenever I choose my airport outfits , I remember that the fabric shouldn’t be too tight because it can be irritating if the flight is long. You can always choose oversized hoodies for the airport, but this outfit is perfect if you want to look chic.

Pick a yellow crop top with black high-waisted pants. You can pair it with any oversized button-down shirt. Roll the sleeves up for a chic look.

Lastly, choose your comfiest pair of sneakers to complete your look. Accessorize your look with black shades and carry a tote bag for all your belongings.

What To Wear In Russia

20 – Olive Spaghetti Strap Crop Camisole With White Collared Crop Top And Beige Shorts

Another casual outfit you can easily wear on a sunny day is an olive spaghetti strap camisole with beige shorts. You can wear an oversized shirt and tie it from the front to create a cover-up, or you can also wear a cropped jacket.

For footwear, sneakers are the best option if you plan to walk. Otherwise, white slides will also look fine.

This outfit is perfect for the day when you haven’t planned much for the trip and want to walk around the streets to appreciate the surroundings casually.

What To Wear In Russia

19 – Green Sweatshirt With Light Blue Flared Denim Jeans And Mint Sherpa Jacket

While in Russia, you had to travel from one city to another. Russia has one of the largest rails, so you should definitely experience it while you are there.

Don’t bother to wear anything too fancy for your train ride. Just wear a hoodie and light blue flared denim jeans. Pair your outfit with a mint green sherpa jacket.

Another tip if you are visiting Russia for the first time is don’t carry too much stuff. Instead of taking many handbags, go with a staple crossbody bag and a big tote bag that can fit your important stuff.

air travel outfits for ladies

Russia has a lot of monuments to visit. Cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg are famous for heritage and culture, so you can see museums, galleries, and architecture.

Although Russians are not the biggest fan of bold and bright patterns, but you can wear dark shades for the night outs, like a fancy dinner at a yacht.

I suggest wearing light colors for the churches and museums and going with dresses because they look more formal. If you are on a business trip, then choose skirts.

18 – Purple Crewneck Full-Sleeves Midi Dress With Pink Belt And Purple Hat

If you want to wear modern clothes in Russia, but for a formal gathering, then there’s nothing a better option than a crewneck midi dress.

You can add a pink belt and a purple hat for a voguish look. Go with transparent heels if you are attending a party or brown boots if you are just out to admire the beauty of the place.

Accessorize your outfit with a few bracelets and rings. A little tip for you is to avoid neck pieces with crewneck dresses. Keep your makeup minimal, and a bright shade of lipstick is all you need to

17 – Red Silk Front Knot Bishop Sleeves Top With Matching Red Skirt

A Red Silk outfit is the perfect option for clubbing when you are in Russia. You can wear lace-up heels with this dress for an evening glam look.

Keep your makeup dewy, and use minimal jewelry to complete the look. Lastly, do your hair in a beachy waves style, so you don’t have to tie them up.

SUMMER & SPRING OUTFITS

Summer is a perfect time to travel to Russia if you want to explore this country’s hidden gems. The temperature ranges from 20 to 30-degree celsius. Remember that Russians wear modest clothing, so don’t bring anything too short. Otherwise, you will feel uncomfortable around the locals.

Although you can enjoy good sunny days in Russia, you will soon find out that the temperature is unpredictable. So always carry light wear jackets and umbrellas with you.

16 – Black And White Stripe Sweatshirt With Beige Pleated Skirt And Fleece Stockings

An easy way to wear skirts in Russia is to pair them with stockings. You can wear any top from your wardrobe or a sweatshirt and wear a skirt. Choose chunky white sneakers to complete the look.

What To Wear In Russia

15 – Printed Elastic Top With Brown Oversized Button Down Shirt And Beige High-Waisted Pants

Printed shirts are pretty popular these days. You can easily pair them with cargo pants or high-waisted jeans. Add a beige oversized button-down shirt to bring that spring vibe. Lastly, a tote bag would match the look perfectly.

14 – White Sports Bra, White Pleated Skirt, And Pink Sheer Button-Down Shirt

What to pack for Russia in summer is the most asked question by first-time visitors. You don’t have to go over the board while packing. Keep your luggage minimum, so you don’t have to worry about that. Since we are talking about summer, an all-white outfit is a must. Pair a white sports bra with a white pleated skirt.

You can add a feminine touch by wearing a pink button-down shirt over it. Keep the buttons open, or tie them from the front as you like. Lastly, choose white pair of sneakers to finish the look. Keep your jewelry minimal, and that’s it.

What To Wear In Russia

13 – White Crop Top, Ripped Blue Jeans, And Denim Crop Jacket

Another important question I have mostly heard is what not to wear in Russia. When you search your query, you might get answers like don’t wear ripped jeans in Russia. However, the reality is that tourists in Russia have no dress code.

Pair a white tank top with blue jeans and wear a blue denim jacket. Choose white sneakers and match your belt with the color of your footwear. For the accessory, add silver hoops to keep your look elegant. Last but not least, don’t forget to carry a sling bag.

WINTER & FALL OUTFITS

Russain winters are extremely cold, and you can face heavy snowfall, so always come prepared for that. The temperature varies from -2°C/28°F to -28°C/-18°F. Therefore, it’s wise to pack a lot of layers.

Whether going to Moscow’s Red Square or Hermitage Museum at the Winter Palace, you need to wear a lot of warm clothes. I suggest wearing a thermal first, then a sweater, and lastly a long coat – basically you want to layer like a pro . Wear waterproof boots and don’t forget to pack gloves.

12 – Blue And White Turtle Neck Sweater With Black Jeans And Black Fur Coat

Winters are always extreme in Russia, especially from November to March. Try to pack according to the season, and I suggest checking the weather app for dates of your stay beforehand because Russia’s cold weather can freeze you to death. Another factor to consider here is which cities are on your list.

Wear a sweater with your warmest jeans. Now layer a black fur coat and white cap. You can also add wool gloves; trust me, you will need them. Use a crossbody bag; it will be easy to carry around.

What To Wear In Russia

11 – Black Crop Top And Pink Sweatpants With Black Denim Jacket

If you are visiting an area that is not so cold, pair your black sweatshirt with pink joggers. Add a black leather jacket to give you a comfy yet stylish vibe. Choose chunky sneakers for that extra height. Lastly, add black shades to complete your look.

10 – Light Blue Turtle Neck And Leather Blazer With White Sherpa Coat

If you like leather blazers and trousers, pair them with a light blue turtleneck and a white sherpa coat. You can accessorize minimal jewelry. Also, for snowy areas, wear boots instead of sneakers. Add colors with pink sunglasses, and that’s it.

09 – White Turtle Neck And Black Pants With Long White Coat And Checkered Print Muffler

A white turtle neck and white coat are a great combination with black jeans and black boots. But to elevate the look of your outfit, add prints with mufflers or caps. Checkered print in white and black is an excellent option for pairing.

08 – Off-White Co-Ord Set With Boots And Long Oversized Brown Coat

Co-ord sets are pretty common these days; almost everyone has a pair of them in their wardrobe. You can layer your white co-ord set with thermals and put on a brown wool coat for extreme weather. Wool coats are best for Russian winters, so don’t forget to pack them with you.

07 – Greyish Black Turtleneck Dress With Black Wool Coat And Checkered Bucket Hat

Turtleneck dresses look super cute and are easy to style. Thanks to the legging makers who came up with the idea that you can wear leggings in winter, and thanks to Tiktok for making it so popular. Also, add a black wool coat and a bucket hat to finish the look.

06 – Green V-Neck Pleated Midi Dress With White Strap Sandals

Midi dresses are the perfect option for desi moms on vacation. Not too fancy but not so casual, wear green midi dresses with white strap sandals. Either go with sandals or choose sneakers, depending on your comfort level.

What To Wear In Russia

05 – White Hoodie And White Straight Pants With Colorful Printed Coat And White Mary Jane Shoes

White hoodies, sweatpants, and a colorful cardigan are the best ways to spend your lazy days in Russia when you want to roam around the streets. Also, the colorful cardigan is a staple piece because you can style it with many outfits.

What To Wear In Russia

04 – Black Spaghetti Strap Mini Dress With White Detailing And Long Fur Coat

When it comes to styling statement pieces, no one can do it better than Hailey Bieber. Choose a black mini dress and pair it with a long fur coat. Add long boots to finish the look. It’s a perfect outfit for clubbing in Russia.

What To Wear In Russia

03 – Beige Turtle Neck And High Waisted Skirt With Brown Belt And Beige Coat

If sophistication and elegance could be defined with one picture, then this would be it. Pair the beige turtleneck with a high-waist skirt. You can add a beige or brown long beige coat. Style long brown boots with this outfit and match your belt with boots to add colors to the look.

What To Wear In Russia

02 – Grey Top With Black Elastic Waist Trousers And Black Blazer

A grey ribbed shirt with black elastic waist trousers is perfect for comfortable sightseeing in Russia. There is no specific dress code for tourists in Russia so you can style everything. Choose a black blazer if you want to keep your look subtle. Accessorize your outfit with golden hoops, and a chain necklace would be a nice addition.

Carry a vibrant or bright color bag to contrast the outfit. Lastly, sightseeing means a lot of walking, so pick your most comfortable sandals, and you are all set to go out for the day.

What To Wear In Russia

01 – Green Printed V-NeckFront-Knot Pleated Midi Dress With Black Sandals

Another excellent outfit if you want to dress apart from traditional clothes in Russia is a flowy midi pleated dress. You can choose a V-neck long sleeves dark green dress with embellishment of black detailing on it. Choose black sandals with laces so you can wrap them around your foot.

Roll up the sleeves if the weather is too hot. By the way, it is the best look to go with if you are searching for what to wear in Russia in summer. Wear a smartwatch as an accessory. Lastly, pick up your colored shades so you can enjoy the sightseeing without getting your eyes affected by sun rays.

What To Wear In Russia

Q: Can you wear jeans in Russia?

Ans: Russia never directly bans jeans. However, in the past, there were restrictions on clothing from the western world, but now jeans are pretty popular in style here and will serve as an adjustable base for your outfit when paired with lighter layers in the summer and heavier ones in the winter.

Q: Is there a dress code in Russia?

Ans: For Russians, there are some standard norms for dressing. However, for tourists there’s no dress code in Russia.

Q: How should I dress in Moscow?

Ans: Because of how conservative Russia is, bright colors will make you stick out, especially in the winter. Moreover, denim is very popular in Moscow in the summer and throughout the year.

What to Wear in Moscow in Winter

Written By: Julia K

Going to Moscow for the holidays? You’re in luck!

Why? Because there are no lines to the major tourist spots, there are fewer people in general, and you get the best prices. You can also get bragging rights that you have visited Moscow, Russia during its famous winter.

Winter in Russia lasts about five months. It gets snowy and cold going into negative Celsius at the end of October beginning November. Spring begins in mid-March and lasts till mid-May. Summers are hot and sometimes humid.

Always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating your winter  travel capsule wardrobe , which should fit in your suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

The first thing to know as you plan what to wear in Moscow in winter is how to pack for the weather.

Read these guides to get started, then read the specific details below for outfit ideas for various activities in Moscow:

  • How to Pack for Cold Weather
  • How to Stay Warm in Cold Weather (without the bulk)
  • Extreme Cold Weather Clothing Strategies
  • The Secret to Packing Light in Winter

Local women look their best anywhere and everywhere they go. Do pack nicer items and bring your makeup, too .  The following suggestions are based on a two week itinerary and contain three to four looks for the following activities:

  • museums, walking around,
  • going to a theater or ballet,
  • going out to a restaurant and club, or
  • getting invited to a random dinner at someone’s apartment, because it can happen!

Walking around the downtown area

Going to Moscow is a very unique experience. Walking around Red Square , New and Old Arbat, and visiting the ice skating rink in VDNH or Gorky Park will require warm attire.

Bring a long, warm winter coat that goes to your knees and has an attached hood. Choose a down jacket like these for optimal warmth.  Russian women love fur coats–not just as a fashion statement but due to their functionality in the cold.

Add warm winter accessories such as a big, warm blanket scarf that you can also use as a hood. Don’t forget a warm hat, thermal underwear , and mittens (not gloves).

Find out why thermal underwear for women is absolutely essential for cold weather travel!

As you plan what to wear in Moscow in winter be prepared for icy conditions; bring comfortable shoes with a thick sole that are appropriate for the snow and slush. Here are a few warm waterproof leather boots  suggested by our readers. Don’t forget to wear them with warm wool socks !

General tip: wearing layers will give you more freedom in the outside-inside situation. It gets very warm in the subway underground and inside some buildings, compared to the cold outdoors.

It’s important to note that during winter, the temperature varies from -2°C/28°F to -28°C/-18°F, which is exceptionally cold! The average is around -15°C / 5°F.

The one easy way to tell a tourist from a local is if they’re wearing heels and makeup. Generally speaking,  Moscow ladies take fashion, makeup, hair, and style very seriously. Bring your best attire and a splash of bling for a bit of glam.

A simple set of stud earrings can easily elevate an outfit from drab to chic. From outdoor adventures to city breaks, wear a set like  this for any trip!

Going to a museum

When planning what to wear In Moscow in winter (or anytime), keep in mind that sloppy attire is frowned upon. While looking your best when traveling is always a given, you might be refused service or be simply ignored in certain places. People may treat you differently depending on how you dress.

To a museum, wear dark denim, boots or booties, a  crossbody purse , jacket, and a shirt. Don’t forget to do your makeup and hair.

Many places may require you to check your coat so you should still have the appropriate layers to wear inside without feeling uncomfortably warm or cold. Checking your coat also allows you to stay warm when you’re outdoors but move freely indoors.

Places to visit are Diamond Fund , Red Square, the  Gum department store (pronounced like goom), and  Armoury Chamber , Tsentral’ny Dom Khudozhnika ,  Pushkin Museum and Tretyakov Gallery .

To a theater or ballet

Winter is the time to visit the world famous Bolshoi Theater. If you’re lucky enough to get tickets, then The Nutcracker is the one to see! I would advise getting there one hour early, order some champagne and sandwiches, and check out the crowd. There are plenty of other theaters that are not as famous but equally as good.

Floor length gowns aren’t necessary or practical, so bring a cocktail dress, shoes, evening clutch, jewelry, and do your makeup and hair. Tip: gorgeous jewelry can dress up a versatile LBD.

Do not wear denim to an opera or ballet!

If you are a guest in someone’s house

Russians do like to invite people into their homes. Dress modestly but with great attention to detail as a well dressed appearance is always appreciated. You can wear dark denim jeans, a sweater, jewelry, a nice bag, and boots.

Please remember to always take off your shoes when in someone’s house. It is considered rude to walk in street shoes at home. So pack your party socks or tights!

Moscow is a hub of amazing places to eat. One thing’s for sure–you’ll never be hungry. It caters to all budgets and styles. If you’re eating on a budget, then your daytime attire will suit you perfectly.

If you plan to dine at nice restaurants or visit clubs, wear a  cocktail dress, black tights, heels, and a clutch. Alternatively, wear leather pants with a flattering long sleeve blouse and jewelry.

General tip : If you plan on dining out, do make a reservation on Fridays and weekends. Otherwise there are plenty of places to choose from. Local favorites include Chaihana , Valenok , Ludi Kak Ludi and any cafe in Kitai Gorod.

Moscow is a non-stop hub of an always-moving machine. You should definitely go and enjoy yourself even during winter! A post on what to wear in Moscow during summer is coming up soon. Stay tuned!

Traveling to Moscow end of March and first of April. Do women wear fur coats at this time of year? If yes, does the colorof the fur matter. Would it be lighter coats–snow leopard, silver saga fox or is a dark coat of fake cur acceptable? Or would a puffer coat be advisable with a beanie with fox fur pompom? Or would a wool full length cap be appropriate? Thanks

Hi Leslie, fur coats are a common fashion style, because they keep you toasty and warm, and look fantastic. It would depend on the temperatures, I would recommend that you check the weather forecast closer to your departure dates to ensue you have packed the most appropriate clothing for the weather. Our readers are the best at answering questions like yours, so to get you as much feedback as possible, I have gone ahead and scheduled your question to appear on TFG’s facebook page. Ninotchka

I’m a girl who has only lived in warm weather. I have never experienced winter like in moscow. I have dumb questions about shoes and attire. If going to the ballet with heels, do you bring your boots to walk outside and inside?

Also, can you wear winter snow boots inside a university for a long time? I bought the sorels Joan of arctic and winter carnivals. Will they be too hot for inside? Do I need to bring extra pair of shoes?

Hi Ninotchka, thank you for your question. Let me look into this for you! 🙂

Julie

Would love to see a packing list for a river cruise to Russia in the spring!!

Will keep it in mind for a future post!

Alanna Wargula

Thanks so much for this article! It is so hard to find advice for winter/snowy travel. It is still about layering! Leggings under my skinny jeans. I wear my winter boots (Sorel with fur trim) on the plane, and my marmot long “down defender” water resistant coat Squishes down in the packing cubes.

alex

Thanks for sharing Alanna! Glad you found this article helpful!

What to wear in Russia

What to Wear in Russia

Top style tips for russia.

  • Russia is fairly conservative, and if you choose to wear bright colors – particularly in the winter months – you will stand out.
  • Jeans are always popular here and, teamed with lighter layers for the summer and warmer ones for the winter, will serve as a versatile base to your wardrobe.
  • Add in a smarter outfit for more formal occasions , such as the ballet or opera. Whilst it's not compulsory, the locals do dress up for these events and you'll feel more comfortable if you do the same.
  • The attitude towards wearing fur is very different in Russia compared to Western Europe. Fur is very common and relatively cheap, and you will see a lot of people wearing it.
  • If you are looking for a highly versatile travel jacket to bring along we recommend the  SCOTTeVEST  range. Their range of jackets have been specifically designed with traveling in mind and include RFID security (to protect your passport information), 23 secure pockets and personal connectivity integration.

Shoes to pack for Russia

  • If you're intending to see as many sites as possible during your trip (and there are a lot to see) you'll be doing a good deal of walking – so be sure to pack some comfortable walking shoes . We love Hotter shoes , for total comfort along with style.

Pack for the weather

  • November, December, January, February and March are freezing so be ready to dress warmly. Our advice would be to pack warm layers.
  • For extra warmth pack some long thermal underwear – you'll be grateful you did.
  • light wool is a good choice to wear against your skin as it naturally helps to regulate your body temperature . It keeps you warm in the cold, wicks away moisture when it's hot, and doesn't retain odours – even after prolonged wear.
  • Muscovites wear a lot of fur in the winter – for a reason. Whether your preference is for fake or the real thing, you are well advised to have a very thick warm coat, gloves and scarf. A hat and/or ear muffs are also a very good idea. A furry lining or trim will keep you even cosier.
  • Wear really good boots with soft rubber soles . It's important that you get soft rubber soles because even medium soles get really hard in the freezing cold. Make sure too that they have large spaces between the tracks, or the snow will get stuck in them and make them very slippery.
  • Dressing in layers will help you with the temperature changes during the day, whatever time of year you visit.
  • Be sure to pack your swimwear if you want to join in the winter time ritual bathing in hot and cold pools, steam rooms and saunas.
  • We love the Weather+ app – it gives an accurate 6 day forecast for day and night, which when you're planning from home is really helpful. You can keep all the places you've been to too – a nice way to remember your trip 🙂

Clothing tips for women

  • Moscow and St Petersburg are very much like any other cosmopolitan city ; women love to dress up and are rarely seen without make-up and high heels.
  • But, with all the sightseeing to do, we suggest you save your high heels for the evenings.
  • A few well chosen pieces of costume jewelry will transform any outfit.
  • And a pashmina is a versatile piece too that will dress up any outfit – try it with a simple smart dress.
  • If you are planning to visit an Orthodox Church be sure to cover your head with a scarf, and cover up bare arms and legs – your pashmina or wrap can come in handy for this too.
  • If you are in Russia on business, pack a conservative skirt-suit with tights or stockings and smart shoes.

Clothing tips for men

  • If you are in Russia on business men are expected to wear a dark, well tailored suit and tie, with smart shoes.

Regions of Russia

  • No trip would be complete without sight of Moscow's palatial metro (underground) dripping with chandeliers.
  • For travel on the Trans-Siberian railway you'll need to dress in layers. The train itself is very warm inside, but for the frequent half-hour stops you'll need to put on boots, warm coat, hat and gloves as it can be freezing outside. There are power outlets for charging your phone etc, but don't leave it unattended and you'll need an adaptor. Take soft drinks with you – it will be much cheaper than buying them on board, and snacks will be useful especially in the winter when there are fewer sellers on the platforms.

Other things to pack

  • You'll need a visa for Russia, and arrange it well in advance to avoid paying a premium at the last minute. Remember too that you must carry your passport with you at all times.
  • If you don't buy Russian Rubles before you go, take US dollars or Euros as they are far easier to change once in the country.
  • To use electrical gadgets you may need a travel adapter plug , and also a step down voltage converter if your devices are not designed for Russian voltage (220V) .
  • A lightweight day sack or shoulder bag will come in handy to carry your sightseeing essentials.
  • If you tend to buy bottled water , consider carrying a LifeStraw Filtration Water Bottle – fill up from any source and get clean, safe drinking water without wasting plastic bottles.
  • Avoid paying unexpected baggage fees – use an accurate luggage scale to ensure you keep within the weight allowance. Don't forget to leave room for souvenirs on the way home! The ‘ Mastryoshka ‘ nesting dolls are famous of course, but look out too for amber jewelry and beautiful lacquer boxes . If you want to stock up on vodka , remember you will need to pack it in checked-in luggage unless you buy at the airport duty-free.
  • And a final tip – note that it's considered bad luck to whistle indoors !

What to Wear in Russia

What to wear in Russia 21

Last year I wrote a post called What to Wear in India , and since then it has become one of the most popular articles on this blog. I don’t talk about it much on here, but fashion is a huge part of my life. Not as much as travelling, of course, but it’s still pretty important. I love that clothing can be like art, and can make you feel confident, empowered, and, best of all, like a representation of who you really are. Both when travelling and in day-to-day life, I tend to dress in bright colours and/or interesting shapes. I’m also a huge fan of piling on accessories – whoever said to take off one accessory before you leave the house clearly never met me, because I usually add two or three at the last minute.

What to wear in Russia 12

But why am I ranting about fashion on a travel blog right now? Well, because I’d like to incorporate more fashion (specifically travel fashion) on the blog in general. I get a lot of emails about what to wear in certain places – plus I’m a huge fan of shopping locally and incorporating local style into your wardrobe. That being said, expect to see a few more “What to Wear In” posts here. And why not continue the series with Russia?

What to wear in Russia 10

I have been to Russia twice – once in 2007, when I spent a summer volunteering and teaching in Yaroslavl, and in 2010, when I took the Trans-Siberian across the country in late autumn. What’s important to note when you consider packing your suitcase for Russia is that summers can get quite hot, and winters… well, winters can get very, very cold. Not only that, the cold weather can last from September to May, so it’s best to always pack a few warm pieces in your suitcase, no matter when you visit the country.

With the exceptions of perhaps Moscow and St. Petersburg, most of Russia dresses quite casually throughout all seasons, so if you just want to bring jeans and a few sweatshirts, you’ll be fine. I’m not exactly a jeans and sweatshirt kind of girl, so here are a few outfits I wore during my time in Russia.

What to wear in Russia 8

Trying to look cool but just coming across as grumpy

Please note that, whatever I was wearing, every single person assumed I was Russian, even if I repeatedly said, “I don’t speak Russian” (in Russian, so I kind of get why it was confusing for some people). I blame my Russian heritage, but maybe it was because I also kind of dressed the part. Anyway… here’s what to wear in Russia, starting with the warmer months and then the colder months. This guide is for women, but men can easily adapt a lot of this advice.

What to wear in Russia in summer…

What to Wear in Russia 26

So I know that I just said that I’m not a jeans and sweatshirt kind of girl… but guess what, I lied. Okay, not really, this was when I was teaching and so we had to be able to run around with kids (also, this was eight years ago, and I am still shuddering about that haircut/colour). Jeans, and denim in general, are very popular in Russia – while the girls pictured with me are teenagers, they’re wearing very typical outfits seen across the country. Throw on a pair of jeans with a t-shirt and you’ll be good to go. I’m also a huge fan of denim jackets, and consider them to be an essential piece of a travel wardrobe. Not only can they keep you warm, they’re stylish practically everywhere in the world. I would also recommend bringing a light cardigan or two, as summer nights can get a bit chilly.

What to Wear in Russia 28

And just in case you didn’t believe me that denim is popular in Russia, here is  an entire family dressed almost entirely in denim . I have waited years to be able to post this on my blog and I am so happy that today is the day. The Canadian tuxedo is real, folks.

What to Wear in Russia 29

Sundresses and skirts of all lengths are acceptable in most parts of Russia, though if you plan on visiting any religious places, I’d recommend bringing something that fully covers your legs. Please note that some religious sites require women to wear skirts (don’t get me started), so I’d make sure you have at least one in your bag. Otherwise these places will require you to wear one of their own skirts over your trousers or wrap a huge swath of fabric around you, but if you’re cool with that, don’t worry about the skirt.

Many women in Russia do not shy away from showing off their bodies. Especially in the larger cities, you’ll see a lot of short skirts and tight clothing, so if that’s your bag, feel free to wear it, too. A lot of women wear very high heels in both summer and winter, but you can easily get away with flats and/or cute runners. Bare shoulders are also okay, though again, if you plan on visiting a religious site (including cathedrals) I would bring something to cover up.

What to Wear in Russia 27

Women are often required to cover their heads when visiting churches

Don’t forget a bathing suit for either season, as it’s common to attend public baths, saunas, etc. Also make sure to have a thin scarf or pashmina to cover your head if you go to a religious site.

Essentially, I’d say that summer dressing in Russia is very similar to what you see across North America and Europe.

And what to wear in Russia in winter…

What to wear in Russia 20

Pretty sure I should have had that coat done up, but I liked my dress, so, you know

A good, warm coat is necessary. This is absolutely vital if you’ll be in Russia in any of the colder months (i.e. most of the year). The coat that I took to Russia was a wool blend from Zara, and for the most part it was warm enough, even in Siberia in October. As I mentioned previously, most of Russia dresses quite casually for day-to-day life, and many stick to neutral colours, so if you really want to blend in I’d stick to beige, black, grey, navy… you get the idea. However, if you really want to rock a lime-green coat (that’s my current winter jacket colour in London), go for it. Wearing a lot of bright colours outside of a major city usually pegs you as a tourist, so you may get a few stares, but I’ve never really been bothered by that.

What to wear in Russia 19

I’d also recommend bringing some warm boots, as it can rain/snow a lot in the colder months. As I wasn’t too worried about snow when I was there, I got away with some vintage boots and some leather lace-up ankle boots. I also had a few pairs of flats and oxfords. When I visited in summer I wore cowboy boots and people openly pointed at my feet and laughed at me, so there’s that.

What to wear in Russia 7

If you’re going to be spending some time on a train, I’d recommend bringing some warm slippers or something you can easily slip on an off (like these slippers/shoes I bought in Mongolia. They were perfect as they had a hard sole which meant I could walk around the train).

What to wear in Russia 2

Okay, technically this photo was taken in Mongolia, but I went to Russia right after, so it counts

Again, I’d bring a pair of jeans (and/or trousers) if you visit Russia in winter. If it’s especially cold, layer a pair of tights or long thermal underwear underneath.

What to wear in Russia 4

Layering up

What to wear in Russia 18

Pretty typical outfit for me in Russia. I’m making that face because we were in this bizarre mock log cabin for lunch and they were pumping really loud techno music the entire time. Kind of sums up Russia, actually.

Layers will absolutely be your friend in Russia, and I recommend bringing shirts and jumpers that you are able to pile on when necessary. I often wore a long-sleeve t-shirt under a warm jumper, and then my coat. Keep in mind that this was only October/November, so you may need even more in January or February. I also sometimes wore a blazer or fake leather jacket  under  my winter jacket, because I thought it was fashionable (and still do).

What to wear in Russia 13

Warm socks are absolutely vital. If I was wearing a skirt (because I wear skirts and dresses no matter what the temperature), I’d layer pairs of tights and then wear this pair of long wool socks. Make sure you have sufficient layers on your feet, but that you’re still able to move your toes when you put on your shoes. This will help against the cold.

What to wear in Russia 9

Warm hats. Lots of them (or okay, one really good one). I was really into berets when I visited in 2010, so that’s what I wore every day, but a toque – or beanie, if you’re not Canadian – is perfect, too.

What to wear in Russia 22

Scarf bought in Russia. I’m pretty sure I was amazed by the thickness of this hot chocolate, hence the face.

Scarves. You are starting to get the picture here. It is freaking cold in Russia. When I visited Lake Baikal in October I needed both a neck warmer and a scarf to stay warm. You will also need to cover your head if you visit a religious site, so a scarf can help here, too.

What to wear in Russia 17

I wore a fake fur stole/scarf thing when I was there, but please be aware that real fur is still common to see in Russia.

What to wear in Russia 11

Mittens purchased in Russia

Mittens and/or gloves. Yep. Freaking freezing. Mittens are always better as you get more warmth by being able to move your fingers around together, but gloves are fine on warmer days. The good news is that there are always stores and markets selling warm clothing, so if you forget something on this list, you can buy it there.

What to wear in Russia 24

Outfit worn to the ballet in St. Petersburg

I’d also recommend bringing at least one nice outfit to go out in. Especially in the bigger cities, Russians like to get dressed up to go out on the town. While casual clothing is fine for most activities and situations, going to a show or out for dinner at a nice restaurant requires a bit of sprucing up. I wore a simple H&M dress and blazer and felt totally comfortable and stylish, even at the ballet. Moscow and St. Petersburg are quite cosmopolitan and you’ll see many people in fashionable clothes at all hours of the day, so keep that in mind if you plan on visiting either city – you may stand out a bit more as a tourist in that jean and sweatshirt combination in those places. Also, if you are visiting for business, definitely have a suit or other appropriate formal office wear on hand, as Russians dress professionally for work.

What to wear in Russia 16

For women, make-up is quite common at all times of the day. I wore red lipstick a lot, because, you know, Russia .

I’ve admired your fashion sense ever since I stumbled here years ago — this is a great feature for you! I’d also be curious to know how much room you leave in your suitcase for the items you purchase in-country, or if you tend to get rid of or ship things home. (And do you change out your wardrobe frequently? I still have things I wore in high school, and considering I’m now in my early 30’s, that’s fairly embarrassing. But I’m SO cheap when it comes to clothes!)

Aw, thank you so much, Katie! That’s so nice of you. I do leave a bit of room in my suitcase when I travel, unless I’m travelling carry-on only. Then I just pray that I don’t find something I absolutely love, ha ha. When I’ve travelled long term I often start ditching/donating clothing that I’m not wearing as much in order to swap it for the local stuff, or, yes, I do ship things home occasionally (only if it’s something super cool). I usually plan for all of this within my travel budget.

And yes, I am a total shopaholic… I update my wardrobe a lot. I am cheap, too, though – I almost always buy my stuff from high street shops (no designer or brand names for me) or from ASOS. However, I still have stuff I worn in high school, too!

I loved all of your outfits and the berets! Great choices. Now I’m going to go watch your video. 🙂

Thank you so much! Hope you liked the video.

' src=

I laughed out loud at the denim family and the caption on the log cabin meal picture! I LOVE your personal style and cannot wait to read more fashion/travel posts. I’ve long dreamed of travel in Russia, thanks to a somewhat strange teenage obsession with the ’60s film version of Doctor Zhivago…

Ha ha, I’m glad I could make you laugh! Russia is a very interesting country, taking the Trans-Siberian was one of my favourite journeys. I hope you get there soon!

Canadian Tuxedos and Toques 🙂

Someday I will get back to Russia and be able to spend some time there. 24 hours on a travel delay just wasn’t enough. But I have spent a fair bit of time in Ukraine, which is very similar.

I found that people either dressed casual – jeans and nice t-shirt – or completely dressed up, there was no in-between. Going to church (was there on missions) was a dress-up occasion, going shopping at a big mall was too, or going out to dinner in the evening. Our translators had two pairs of jeans with them. They hand washed and line dried them, and then ironed them. I had never seen someone iron jeans before. Most middle class folks only have a couple of everyday outfits, so wearing the same outfit repeatedly is completely normal.

I was only there in the summer, and was doing hands-on work, so I typically wore shorts, a t-shirt or tank, and running shoes. And I wore a backpack everywhere. I sure got a lot of stares and looks. I totally did not blend in. But being a red-head, there’s no way I would blend in even when I was dressed up.

Someday I will be in Siberia in winter.

Thank you very much for your input, Melody! It’s really good to hear another person’s opinion on the matter. As for the ironing jeans – yes – I saw that, too! Just goes to show how each culture has its own customs…

' src=

Nice one! Glad to see you wrote about my birth country. The most important thing about women’s fashion is that women like to look like women and be feminine.

Loved seeing the train floor picture. Have spend a lot of time in those trains across Russia.

Thank you for your comment, Elena! I loved being on the train through Russia.

' src=

I love travel bloggers who also care about their style, it sometimes feels like some people think you can’t be a good traveller unless you look scruffy af. Right now I’m trying to combine my love for nice clothes and carry-on only, yikes! Your style is great and I always enjoy seeing these posts. Never been to Russia yet but I live right next door (Finland) and it’s definitely not a shame to wear both gloves AND mittens!

Thank you very much, Elina! I am going to post an article about packing with carry-on only, although I have only ever packed for a week’s travel that way. And yes, I’ve definitely done the double-layer of gloves/mittens! I’m from one of the coldest cities in Canada so I feel like I was fairly prepared for Russia, ha ha…

' src=

I’ve always thought you had fantastic style! So naturally I think this series is a great idea. You’ve given me a lot of ideas for how to stay warm in skirts and dresses, not just when I’m in Russia! haha

Thank you so much, Camille! I almost always wear skirts or dresses, even in freezing weather. There’s definitely a way to keep warm even while wearing them. 🙂

' src=

This post is awesome! And it takes me right back to my trip along the trans-Siberian! I was totally struck by the amount of denim in Russia!

I totally agree about the scarfs and layering – I was there in late August/early September and the weather was very changeable so it was nice to be able to shed layers when the weather was warm but have them on hand for the inevitable colder days (or afternoon/evenings!)

Looking forward to your next post in this series! 🙂

Thank you so much, Ruth! I’m glad you liked it. How amazing was the Trans-Siberian? I’d love to do it again one day.

Thanks again for your comment! 🙂

' src=

I love what you are wearing in all of these pictures! You always so amazing, travelling or not 🙂 p.s. that picture of the family all dressed in denim is too much!!!

Aw, thank you Zalie!! And yes, that family just kills me. I wish I could join their all-denim crusade!

I’m supposed to be packing for a trip to Russia as I write this, but I’m so glad I found your post. Mostly because your outfits are awesome! Just “liked” your page on Facebook so I look forward to reading more about your trips!

I love that I came across this! I’m traveling to Moscow and St Petersburg in mid Sept and have been debating a packing list. I, too, am a fan of layering and denim jackets! I love your style and that you make travel look effortless! Any thoughts on leggings (in this era of lularoe)?

' src=

Loved your article and your style. Want to ask: are denim jeans, indeed any kind of pants OK for older women? What about capris? I’m 63 (not quite a babushka yet) and will be in St. Petersburg and Moscow this summer and would prefer not to have to wear skirts. Too bad I gave away my denim jacket. What do you suggest for my generation?

I think that jeans and capris are totally fine, Wanda! I personally do not wear them often but they are very common in Russia. If you’re going to the big cities in summer, I think that you can dress the same as you would at home. Just make sure to have comfortable walking shoes! 🙂

So flats are OK? I don’t wear heels any more.

Flats are absolutely OK. Many Russian women wear heels but that doesn’t mean you have to.

' src=

This is maybe a weird comment, haha, but you’re giving me long-lost Romanov relative (/ time-traveling Romanov sister) vibes in (the second, blonde half of) these pictures. I dig it!

' src=

Wow, what a great blog series! I loved seeing all your cute outfits during your Russian travels, I will definitely be checking out your ‘what to wear’ recommendations for other locations as well!

Thank you very much!

' src=

Great article, thank you. While I’m a man in my early 50s, I found this very informative. I’ll be traveling to Saint Petersburg alone in mid April for two weeks. This helped a lot. I’ve already bought my tickets to see a ballet in the Mariinsky as well. I feel more confident in the clothes I should bring. Thanks.

Thanks a lot, Kim! Glad the article helped.

I will be going to Moscow (Viking Cruise) to St. Petersburg on August 8th. I am no clothes horse, live in Atlanta where it’s broiling hot. I wear skorts/sleeveless tops most of the time, or jeans, some colored. All I have are Summer sleeveless dresses, because we usually go to tropical destinations, or wider leg pants for evening with those sleeveless longer tops. Now I’m in a panic because I am not a good shopper. I’m 75, but small, I do not dress my age at all. I wear sandals all year long because of a foot problem. All I wore in Europe were my skorts, sleeveless tops, and sandals for sightseeing ye gads, what am I going to do now, ready to just stay home, too mind boggling. Evenings on this boat, what do I wear and not look insane, and what do I wear for sightseeing, instead of skorts or shorts? I don’t even own a sweater! I just grab a hoodie. In Europe and Asia I brought a wrap that served as a skirt for the churches and temples. The climate is really messing with me. Please help! Thank you!

Great! During last fifa world cup it helps me lot . I like it & recommend all to read it.

The 12 Best Date Night Outfits From Amazon, Nordstrom, and Madewell Just in Time for Fall — Starting at $24

They’re flirty, fun, and, most importantly, comfy.

air travel outfits for ladies

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

Fall is here, and that means it's time to break out those cozy, cute, and flirty date night looks — perfect for both casual nights out and your next romantic getaway . Whether you're getting ready for a first date or packing for a weekend trip with your partner, dressing up is always part of the fun. I’ve got a few trips lined up with my boyfriend, so I’ve curated some must-have, stylish pieces that you and I should both add to our carts ASAP. Finding the perfect date night outfit can be tricky — you want to look chic but still comfortable enough to explore a new city or dine out. The key? A mix of romantic, timeless, and comfy pieces that are easy to pack and even easier to wear. From a satin slip skirt to black leather pants and suede booties , these fall style staples cover every date night idea from walking through a new city to a romantic dinner while on a fall trip. From now on, no more stressing over what to pack; I’ve rounded up the 12 best fashion items from Amazon, Madewell, and Nordstrom to make your next date night a stylish success.

Btfbm Women’s Satin Slip Skirt

A slip maxi skirt is a fall date night essential as it keeps your legs covered when the temperature drops but still feels feminine and flirty. Specifically, the Btfbm Satin Skirt is incredibly versatile, pairing beautifully with a fitted bodysuit and strappy heels or a flowy blouse and smart loafers.

PrettyGarden Women's Fall 2-piece Sweater Set

This two-piece set is one you'll want to reach for again and again; the sweater-like material fits the fall date night dress code by keeping you cozy while maintaining a chic, polished look. Plus, with 18 different colors to choose from, it ensures you'll have plenty of options.

Tankaneo Women’s Long-sleeve Shirt

The Tankaneo Women’s Long-sleeve Top is endlessly versatile; it works for a casual date night by simply pairing it with jeans and boots, or you can dress it up with leather pants and heels for a more sophisticated look. One shopper raved that it's “an incredibly flattering shirt" that will serve you well this autumn.

Free People Level Up Faux Leather Jeans

A pair of black leather pants is a timeless date night staple that effortlessly elevates any outfit without sacrificing comfort (you'd be surprised by how much stretch they offer). This Free People pair is currently 25 percent off at Nordstrom, which means you just found an affordable, high-quality addition to your capsule wardrobe for just $74.

Halife Women's Long-sleeve Off-the-shoulder Top

The Halife Long-sleeve Top combines simplicity, elegance, and flirtiness thanks to its off-the-shoulder design. Pair it with jeans and black kitten heels for a relaxed vibe, or a mini skirt and high boots for something more daring. With close to 12,000 five-star ratings, it's a clear winner in Amazon shoppers' books.

Chigant Women’s Satin Blouse

The Chigant Women’s Blouse comes in handy when date night falls on a busy work day. Instead of running home to change, wear it to the office so your corporate look can seamlessly transition to what you've got planned for the rest of the night. Its understated, chic design pairs well with nearly anything, offering an effortless, put-together look.

Cctoo Women’s Cold-shoulder Blouse

If you’re ready to move away from neutrals, the Cctoo top is a great place to start. Its fun, fashionable design features open, cold-shoulder sleeves and elegant ruffled detailing, creating a flattering and playful silhouette that’s easy to style.

Madewell Melody Bubble-hem Midi Dress

We love a neutral fall dress, especially one that's versatile enough to wear on casual nights or elevated with heels and jewelry for something more formal. Here, the bubble-hem design adds a fashionable and unique flair, and the dress is incredibly comfortable with pockets so you can enjoy your evening without worry.

Madewell Denim Western Maxi Skirt

A denim maxi skirt pairs seamlessly with high boots and a blouse or bodysuit for a date night or any occasion, especially if you have any fall trips on the horizon. The subtle Western-inspired detailing gives it an edge over other jean skirts, and the medium wash makes it a no-brainer for autumn.

Sam Edelman Michaela Mary Jane Flats

The Sam Edelman Mary Jane flats have quickly become my new favorite; I’ve been recommending them to friends and family because they’re not only chic and on-trend but they're also incredibly comfortable. I can walk all over New York City without a blister in sight. The golden buckle adds a touch of sophistication, and if you’re skipping heels, these are the perfect alternative.

Anne Klein Rene Suede Boots

Every wardrobe needs a pair of black knee-high boots because they instantly elevate any outfit. The suede finish on these Anne Klein boots is a smart choice as it makes the pair ideal for fall and winter. Whether worn with a sweater dress, a midi skirt, or a blouse, these boots encourage a truly endless amount of styling options.

Sam Edelman Willette Kitten Heels

Kitten heels are making a comeback this season, and this Sam Edelman pair is a standout. The bow details and slingback design keep them feminine, while the sturdy block heel and supportive slingbacks ensure comfort. They’d look especially fetching with wide-leg jeans or looser trousers for a relaxed yet polished look.
